Podcasting "How To Make a Child-Safe TikTok"
Tumblr media
This week on my podcast, I read my recent Medium column, “How To Make a Child-Safe TikTok: Have you tried not spying on kids?” The column was inspired by one of the most bizarre exchanges during the Congressional grilling of TokTok CEO Shou Chew:
https://doctorow.medium.com/how-to-make-a-child-safe-tiktok-be08fbf94b0d
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/17/have-you-tried-not-spying/#coppa
If you heard anything about that hearing, it was likely this. Rep Buddy Carter, Republican of Georgia, demanded to know whether Tiktok used “the phone’s camera to determine whether the content that elicits a pupil dilation should be amplified by the algorithm?”
https://www.c-span.org/video/?526609-1/tiktok-ceo-testifies-house-energy-commerce-committee-hearing
Chew replied, “We do not collect body, face or voice data to identify our users. We do not.” Carter pressed him, asking “How do you determine what age they are then?”
Chew said, “We rely on age-gating as our key age assurance.” Carter assumed tuckercarlsonian expression of perplexity and asked for more information. Chew explained: “It’s when you ask the user what age they are.” Carter was clearly baffled by this.
Chew added, “this is a real challenge for our industry because privacy versus age assurance is a really big problem.” Carter interrupted him: “you keep talking about the industry, we’re talking about TikTok here.”
This was a remarkable exchange, even by the standards of Congressional hearings on technology, a genre that includes “a series of tubes,” “Senator, we run ads,” and “Will you commit to ending finsta?”
Chew was completely and terribly correct, of course. The way that the entire industry complies with COPPA — the law that prohibits data-gathering on under-13s without parental consent — is by asking every used to tick a box that says “I am over 13.” This is such an inadequate and laughable figleaf that the Congressdunderhead from Georgia can (possibly) be forgiven for assuming that “age verification” involved some kind of digital phrenology by way of facial scanning.
But beyond being yet another entry in the annals Congressional Pig-Ignorance On Tech, the exchange reveals a massive blind-spot about the entire business of kids’ privacy, and the legislative intention of COPPA, a law passed in 1998, before the age of ubiquitous commercial internet surveillance — but not before people understood that this would be an important subject.
One thing to note here is how rare COPPA is. The US has very near to zero federal privacy laws. There’s the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, which is about as up-to-date as you might imagine given that it was passed in 1986. Then there’s the Video Privacy Protection Act of 1988, which bans video-store clerks from revealing which porn you (or more to the point, Members of Congress) have rented.
And then there’s COPPA, which requires parental consent for data-gathering on pre-teens. And that’s basically…it.
COPPA’s got a checkered legislative history; a lot of the “parental consent” language is about ensuring that kids can’t get access reproductive health information and services, but as with any contentious piece of lawmaking, COPPA passed due to a coalition with different priorities, and part of that coalition just wanted to make sure that companies weren’t spying on kids.
Because — as both Buddy Carter and Shou Chew — can attest, it’s really hard to get parental consent at scale. Like, how do you even know if you’re talking to a kid’s parent or guardian if you’re not allowed to gather information on that kid? And how do you know if you’re talking to a kid or an adult when you gather any information, on any user?
Even if facial recognition technology had been widespread in 1986, I think we can all agree that Congress’s intent wasn’t to “protect kids’ privacy” by subjecting every child who used a computer to an invasive biometric scan. How could you comply with COPPA, then?
Well, one possibility is to never spy on users.
OK, not never. But only in very special circumstances — situations in which users would be willing to go through a reasonably thorough identification procedure. There are some situations in which it would be relatively straightforward to do this for parental consent, too: schools, pediatricians and libraries typically encounter children at the same time as their parents or guardians.
And for the rest of it, companies could just not spy.
The truly bizarre thing is how bizarre this suggestion comes across. It is essentially beyond the imagination of both Buddy Carter and Shou Chew that Tiktok could comply with COPPA by not gathering any user-data. After all COPPA, doesn’t prohibit providing web access to under-13s without parental consent — it prohibits spying on under-13s.
It’s not just Congressdunderheads and Tiktok CEOs who treat “don’t spy on under-13s” as a synonym for “don’t let under-13s use this service.” Every tech product designer and every general counsel at every tech company treats these two propositions as equivalent, because they are literally incapable of imagining a surveillance-free online service.
Which is funny, given another part of the Congressional interview. Chew says, “The only face data that you’ll get, that we collect is when you use the filters that put, say, sunglasses on your face, we need to know where your eyes are.” Carter interrupts him to say, “Why do you need to know where the eyes are if you’re not seeing if they’re dilated?” (my god this guy is horny for pupils).
Chew finishes, “and the data is stored locally on your local device and deleted after the use, if you use it for facial” (emphasis mine).
The Tiktok app could store the list of accounts you follow on your device, and send requests to the Tiktok servers for their updates, and the servers could fulfill those requests without logging them. Your device could analyze the videos you interact with and ask the Tiktok servers for suggestions based on those criteria — again, without Tiktok logging your info.
There’s no millennial prophet who came down off a mountain with two stone tablets circa 2002 and intoned, “Nerds of the world, thou shalt stop rotating thine logfiles, and lo! Thou shalt mine them for actionable market intelligence.” There is nothing intrinsic to the idea of letting people talk to each other, or search the web, or look at videos, that requires surveillance. The surveillance is a choice, which necessitated hundreds of billions of dollars in capital expenditures, and which should have been understood as illegal under COPPA.
But COPPA hasn’t been meaningfully enforced for a quarter of a century. That’s because the ad-tech industry mobilizes some of the hundreds of billions of dollars it gains through spying to block privacy law enforcement and the passage of any new privacy laws. David Cohen, CEO of the surveillance lobby group IEA, told his members, “Extremists are winning the battle for hearts and minds in Washington, D.C., and beyond. We cannot let that happen.”
His co-conspirators at the anti-privacy lobbying group Privacy For America (yes, really) told Congress that commercial surveillance saves every American $30,000/year — in other words, they value the data they steal from you every year at $30,000:
https://www.privacyforamerica.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Privacy-for-America-Letter-in-Support-of-Preemptive-Comprehensive-Privacy-Legislation.pdf
But as Julia Angwin points out, this figure is as absurd as the name “Privacy for America.” The number is pure fiction:
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1815663116#abstract
It doesn’t matter how much the data caught in the ad-tech industry’s nonconsensual harvest is worth — all that matters is that it produces the surplus needed to keep privacy law enforcement and expansion at bay.
Tiktok shouldn’t spy on our kids. Neither should anyone else. America doesn’t need a law banning Tiktok, it’s needs a law banning Tiktok’s surveillance — as well as the surveillance of all its rivals:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/03/30/tik-tok-tow/#good-politics-for-electoral-victories
Because the Chinese state doesn’t need Tiktok to spy on Americans. In the freewheeling, unregulated privacy “marketplace,” all that data is for sale — Chinese spies can just plunk down their credit-cards next to everyone else who buys our data and mobilizes it to compromise us, market to us, and stalk us.

Jumin Week
Day Six: Philautia
With you being away for the weekend, Jumin had the penthouse to himself. Naturally, he kept himself busy with work and Elizabeth the Third, but there was a glaring you-shaped hole missing… and it was getting harder to ignore.
Moving to the small, peach-colored Bose speaker, Jumin smiled fondly. Memories of you dancing wildly or delicately filled his mind — he chuckled as he recalled a spin you had been trying to master, only to land on the bed, couch, or his arms as you toppled over.
Running his fingers through the indented play button, he tilted his head. Surely, you wouldn’t mind him using your stereo…? Or listening to your Spotify playlist?
Jumin opened the account, album covers of Disney, true crime podcasts, and unfamiliar Japanese and Korean artists littering the screen. Eyes softening, he opened the playlist you created — the image you chose being of a wide-eyed Elizabeth the Third looking cluelessly and cutely towards the camera.
Jumin coughed back a laugh; 100 hours and 8 minutes worth of music you enjoyed.
Hm.
Looking back down at your speaker, he pressed the on button, familiar green and blue lights illuminating it. Immediately connecting through Bluetooth, a song boomed throughout the penthouse —
Scaring the absolute shit out of him. Scrambling to turn it down, Jumin closed his eyes and let out a huff.
If you were here, he wouldn’t hear the end of it. He could already imagine your endless laughing.
“Why she insists on turning this thing all the way up is beyond me.” With a sharp click of his tongue, he glanced at the song playing on his phone. “TiK… ToK. Tick tock. I wonder if this Kesha knows the title of her song is spelt wrong.”
With great caution, Jumin turned the volume up on your speaker. A catchy pop-bop filled his ears, but he was still… apprehensive with this kind of music. While your personality shined through catchy diddy’s and endless repetition, Jumin preferred a calmer tone. Light jazz, even scat if he was feeling adventurous.
Turning the music up a little more, he began to understand the appeal. Bobbing his head and patting his thigh with his hand to the beat, he felt himself begin to relax. It felt like you were home, just around the corner, shouting the lyrics you dedicated to memory.
Swaying his hips loosely and relaxing his arms, allowing them to sway naturally to the beat of the music, Jumin smiled. He was only taught formal forms of dance, never something as spontaneous as this. Spreading his legs wider, Jumin grabbed and threw his jacket to the couch. Feet tapping against the floor, he took a chance and started to move around the way you would — toes barely touching the floor, arms up and out to the side, hair madly swooshing in different directions.
He felt ridiculous, but free. Gaining more momentum, Jumin started hopping to the intoxicating rhythm, his long legs skipping from the kitchen to the living room. The small smile on his lips was so much bigger now; he made giddy sounds he had never made before, squeaking in his adrenaline and laughing loudly.
Body glistening with sweat, Jumin slid his tie from around his neck and shot his arm into the air, waving the tie while moving his hips from side to side. Spotting his reflection in the window, his laughter only grew, filling the penthouse with a noise it hadn’t known from him.
Now he understood why you did this everyday!
Pushing the door open with your knee, you set your luggage down and twisted your backpack off your shoulders. The blaring music instantly alerted you. “Jumin? Sweetheart?”
“Tick tock, on the clock, but the party don’t stop, no. OH, WHOA, WHOA OH.”
You clapped your hand over your mouth, muffling a laugh. That was definitely the voice of your husband.
Peeking your head around the corner, your mouth fell in amused bewilderment. Jumin’s elegant figure was no more as he stood thrusting his hips, shaking his butt, and waving his arms to music only you listened to in this relationship. You couldn’t help it; raising your phone, you snapped a quick picture of him…
The click alerting him instantaneously.
Spinning around, hair wet from his sweat, his body tensed. “Darling…!”
Wiggling your fingers, you shined your largest smile his way. “Hi ~!”
While he slammed his hand repeatedly onto the speaker to turn it off to no avail, you ran to him and wrapped your arms around his waist. Jumin hesitantly wrapped an arm around you, very aware of how sweaty he was. “Welcome… home, what is wrong with this speaker.”
You lowered the volume and buried your chin in his chest. “I see you enjoyed yourself while I was away!”
Jumin blushed deeply, his ears ringing. “Darling, it’s not what it looks like.”
“Oh, I think it’s exactly what it looks like.” Pushing his matted bangs back, you gripped his hand. “Don’t be embarrassed! Come on, Mister Fancy Pants! Show me what you can do!”
Jumin beamed, pressing his warm and wet lips against yours. And as you led him to a wider space, the drowning music filling his ears and you before his eyes, there was no better place to be.

May 22: Glasses Shopping
The fatigue has come on very suddenly. I was feeling mostly okay but now I’m just… very tired. But I guess that’s good. Maybe I’ll get to sleep earlier or something.
I started out today very grumpy, just really not into it—not into being at work or anything I was doing. I started feeling better over the course of the day. Got less productive, and more distracted by conversations, but felt better. So it evens out. I’m very excited for the podcast two of my coworkers are going to be on tomorrow. That alone is worth showing up, feed off that energy.
I found it very difficult to get a good reading spot at lunch. I’ve been going out to the reading room, which is mostly deserted post finals, but today there were students in it, for some dumb reason. I know that they are allowed to talk and especially in this particular room but ugggghhhh just let me live. I hate people talking where I’m reading. So I went back to the kitchen, but I could hear talking in TS too. Tried the work room—clock ticks so loud I wanted to tear it from the wall. Finally, I went outside, which was really nice. Except for it being kind of dark where I was sitting, it was perfect. So maybe I’ll read outside instead of on the nasty plastic furniture…. At least until it gets too hot for that.
After work, I went to get new glasses, which didn’t take as long as I thought it would, and which wasn’t really hard but… I don’t know, it felt awkward somehow. But a sort of awkwardness that didn’t set in until after, when I started second-guessing every bit of interaction and every choice and just every moment of my existence generally. Did I pick the right ones? Was I weird about it? Are they going to fit properly? Plus no one seems to take my stupid vision insurance so this was uh kinda expensive. But I also haven’t gotten new glasses in a darn long time and I really should have gotten them last year. So I’m excited to actually use my new prescription, and also to try out having prescription sunglasses which, sadly, I have never had before, and really need with the sun situation out here.
Well, it would be nice if the rest of the week could be kinda chill. I stay on top of my sleep schedule and just slowly get things done.

top 5 movie films! top 5 activities to do that make you feel better and alive and in love with life! top 5 sitcoms! top 5 eps of inside no 9 if you have them :D
hiiiiiiiiiiiiii thank you for asking :-)
top 5 movie films:
these are in no specific order because i struggle to pick favourites + they are liable to change often depending on how i am feeling. BUT these are 5 of my favourites
paddington 2 !!! he is a little bear he is your friend and neighbour he is part of your community and making your life better. he is escaping the criminal justice system. simon farnaby has the hots for hugh grant dressed as a nun
stoker - have been meaning to rewatch this but just generally it ticks an awful lot of boxes for me. i like the themes i do like rage and control and blood it is very nice for me
fight club - i think its good i think men SHOULD express their anger and hopelessness at capitalism via interpersonal touching and showing skin and blowing things up . barbara kruger you construct intricate rituals etc etc
god's own country - very important to me personally that there is content about gay people in the rural countryside getting covered in mud and having sex and wearing jumpers and skinning dead lambs to give lonely lambs jackets which will endear them to the sheep
the private life of sherlock holmes :-) there was a gap in the market for gay holmes solving a mystery involving the loch ness monster and by god did billy bridge that gap. my glass of tea :>
top 5 activities to love life:
find a GOOD podcast episode or audiobook (i'd recommend here something comedic but introspective. you'll have tears in your eyes are they from laughter or emotion who knows) and then go on a walk with it . doesn't matter where you walk. anywhere and everywhere. don't need to walk very long or far find a bench or a wall sit on and watch creatures or people around you
PUZZLES . you have gathered that i am into sudoku well i am also ATTEMPTING to get into crosswords. crosswords have complex codes and indicators which you need to learn along with having a baseline of knowledge of lots of topics. i think finding a topic (such as a type of puzzle) and then endeavouring to learn its secrets is a wonderful thing. approach it with kindness and eagerness . i always find it amazing when i begin to comprehend the care and passion that people have for whatever topic they love. i used to think sudokus were relatively straightforward but there's a whole world of puzzles built upon sudoku logic and there are different techniques to learn and try and there are COMMUNITIES of people who love to talk about it and share puzzles and tips
analysing something you really love will not only enrich your love of that thing and entertain and inform you, it will also allow you to appreciate everything else you encounter in life more deeply and fully. i say this all the time but texts that i have read and ideas i have explored in the name of fun with friends have made me a better and more knowledgable person and i love to notice the little things around me
um idk if this is so much an activity as an ethos but nature makes me love life. i am make an effort to get fresh air, to listen to birdsong, to pay attention to trees and mushrooms and squirrels. i love the weather no matter what the weather is outside because i love the sky i love the rain i love the sun i love the shapes clouds make and i love when its cold and when its warm. i like flowers and i like bodies of water. no matter what happens these things will be there for you and me
a lot of these points overlap but i think that is part of the joy of life. how good things link together and overlap. anyway this one is about poetry. i think it is lovely to read a poem. it will highlight to you what the poet found noteworthy and that thing will become noteworthy to you too and resonate with you at random times. an onion makes me think of love and drinking coke makes me think of love. geese make me think of being unapologetic for existing. and poetry is as detailed as you want it to be depending on how much you care to analyse it but the more you analyse the more there is to appreciate. read the same poems over and over. look up what other people have written about their interpretations. get friends to read poems and ask them what they thought of them. this point equally applies to music with poetic lyrics for example i do this with florence’s lyrics because they are poems and can be treated and appreciated as such
top 5 sitcoms is an incredibly difficult list for me to make because i love sitcoms a lot. one thing about me is i will be watching sitcoms. because i really love so many sitcoms i think i will treat this list as “which 5 do i probably rewatch the most” as opposed to “which 5 are necessarily my favourites”:
vicar of dibley - i have been watching this from a very young age, i know it very well and i still watch it often. i quote it all the time and i think of it all the time. its entirely possible that geraldine deeply informed my personality
outnumbered - i don’t watch it that much these days but the sheer amount and frequency of times that i rewatched this when i was growing up earns it a place on the list. and i DO still love it it is very dear to me. in a lot of ways it reminds me of the best parts of my own family
community - there’s not much to explain here i just love it and i rewatch it a lot it is special and comforting
gavin and stacey - another one i can quote pretty much in its entirety. it’s just fun and quotable and its so familiar to me that its comforting
friday night dinner - its very repetitive i can’t even explain why i like it so much but i DO and i rewatch it a lot. i think i find the characters very likeable and again reminds me a bit of my own family . jim is very very funny as a character, as is martin. rip paul ritter truly a legend </3 i believe we were just witnessing the beginning of his potential as both a comedian and an actor when we lost him
now. to my absolute SHAME it is time to admit i have not seen much of inside no 9. it is completely up my alley and i know i’d gain a lot from watching more. i have seen a few episodes of it and did love them but i have many many left to watch and i DO plan on watching them i just. haven’t yet for some reason. although. a week or so ago i saw you post about a new episode of it and despite having no context whatsoever for what that episode was about i had a vaguely unsettling dream that i was trapped in whatever was going on in that episode. so now i have a question for YOU. what are your top 5 episodes of inside no 9?

530: How To Manage Your Construction Company Payroll Effectively
This Podcast Is Episode Number 530, And It's About How To Manage Your Construction Company Payroll Effectively
Payroll is one of those things that starts simply enough. You start your construction business and hire a few employees, and things tick along. It's straightforward enough to keep everything in line at first, but what happens to most companies is… they grow! This is a great thing, but it also means that payroll becomes more complicated. As such an essential aspect of your business, payroll must run smoothly. Getting paid is, after all, the primary reason that most people come to work.
One of the biggest challenges contractors face is keeping track of overtime hours. With so many employees working on different job sites and projects, it isn't easy to calculate their overtime pay accurately. Complying with all federal and state labor laws is another essential aspect of a construction payroll system. This includes appropriately classifying employees as exempt or non-exempt, withholding the correct amount of taxes from their paychecks, and providing accurate wage statements.
Here are some tips for managing payroll effectively:
1. Simplify
Payroll is one of those things that can be overly complex, and the importance of simplifying it can't be overstated. Many small and medium-sized companies have quirks in managing their payroll. This can make it difficult for somebody else to step in or for someone new to be trained.
Keep things as simple as possible wherever you can. One way to do this is by switching to direct deposit. This will drastically reduce the work put into issuing and tracking payments.
2. Schedule
At least once per year, and preferably more, it's essential that your payroll professional take some time to create a payroll calendar. This will allow them to highlight any dates that may cause a lag in your employees' pay.
It will also allow you to plan for any potential shortcomings or other issues arising from holiday closures or oddities in the calendar. Making a payroll mistake is a surefire way to lower employee morale, so it's important to be aware of these dates ahead of time.
Once compiled, distribute the calendar to your managers so that they can communicate the information to their employees. This will keep everyone apprised of any potential delays in getting paid that may come up.
3. Automate
The computer can be your best friend. Finding the right software to help with payroll can automatically take care of simplifying and scheduling, freeing up valuable time for your payroll specialist.
It also eliminates the potential for human error in payroll processing and creates a crystal-clear picture of your finances. Many options are available these days that are easy to learn and straightforward to maintain.
4. Brush up
Payroll rules and regulations can change frequently and for any number of reasons. It's important to stay informed on any changes in your region and proactively plan for them.
A lot of time can go into correcting a payroll error, so know what's happening to avoid this. With more and more employees being hired remotely, it's also important to be aware of any regulations about those geographically located in a different area from your business.
5. Get help
There comes the point for all growing trade businesses where they have to outsource their payroll processing; if this is you, congratulations! It is truly a milestone.
There are many options out there regarding hiring a payroll specialist, and many of them are available online. Choose the one best suited for you and your business needs without leaving your desk. This takes the pressure off you to know all the nitty gritty details about payroll processing. By hiring an outside professional, preferably a construction payroll specialist, you can ensure your employees will be paid correctly and on time.
Payroll Options
While every contractor recognizes the flaws of using ineffective tools, they may still be losing money due to inefficient payroll tools and processes. When contractors ask us which payroll option we recommend the most, we often say Direct Deposit. As usual, the reasons are simple and related to our primary role as "Profit and Growth Specialists for Contractors."
Option 1 - Paper check looks like the least expensive. Calculate payroll, handwrite or print a paycheck, hand it to your employee, and done.
What is the first thing an employee does after getting a paper paycheck? They go to the bank or the check-cashing store and get cash! Nowadays, you can deposit a check using your bank's mobile app, but let's say your employee wants to cash it immediately:
If they are paid for travel time to and from the job site, they will typically cash their paycheck to the job site or take a break as soon as the bank opens. Having this scenario in mind, there are three costs to consider:
#1 Travel Time - See how much ten minutes can cost your company and Multiply By Three! Because it will take ten minutes each way to detour to and from the bank or payday advance company, plus ten minutes inside the building.
For example, you pay your employee $25.00 per hour, which means every ten minutes of doing personal business on company time costs you $5.94, multiplied by three equals $17.82. If Your Company Earns 10% Net Profit, you need to sell another $178.20 worth of work to compensate for your loss.
If there is more than one worker in the company vehicle, multiply everything by that number.
#2 Cost Per Mile - To operate the company vehicle, which varies depending on the type of vehicles your company uses. Generally, the numbers range from $1.25 to $1.75 per mile. This considers Fuel + Insurance + Repairs + Maintenance + Registration + License divided by the number of miles driven. In this example, we estimate a three-mile detour at the middle range of $1.50 per mile = $4.50. This is towards the lower-end cost and may not reflect the current prices.
#3 Delays On The Job - In construction, you are dealing with project-based systems, not operations or manufacturing-based operations. Every additional day you have to mobilize and de-mobilize costs you money. For example, if it takes (15) minutes for (4) workers to get set up in the morning and the same amount of time at night, your total costs could be $121.92
The total cost for paper checks is between $15.00 and $50.00 per employee. To get the actual results for your company, some analysis would need to be run, or you would look in your Business Process Management System (BPM) for the answers.
Option 2 - Direct deposit could cost an additional $5.00 per payroll and $0.99 per deposit. Direct deposit drops into your employee's bank account one minute after midnight on the day payroll is due. Having a Professional Bookkeeper prepare the payroll is less with direct deposit because of the time saved in making and printing the paper checks, setting them aside for you to sign them, stuffing them in the envelopes, and taking time to pass them out.
Option 3 - A debit Card is similar to a direct deposit. The difference is that the employee does not need a checking account.
Final thoughts
Everything runs smoothly during your regular pay schedule when timecards arrive on time. When employees do not turn in their timecards on schedule and expect you to have their checks ready, no worries; we have you covered. When Payroll Processing gets too complicated, it's time to outsource it.
Payroll is most effectively managed when it's simple, straightforward, and coordinated. By ensuring that our employees are paid fairly and on time, we can help to create a positive and productive work environment. When it starts getting tough to keep it that way, it's likely a sign that your company has grown and you're ready for more robust support.

Taboo Science Podcast: Where No Science Has Gone Before
Tumblr media
Have you ever noticed that when TV goes large, podcasting goes small? TV wants to do a nature show? It's a wide-angle view of all animals, usually narrated by David Attenborough. Need a space show? How about something with Neil DeGrasse Tyson about the entire cosmos?
By contrast, podcasting goes small. It burrows into a topic small in stature but not insignificant. Podcasting has shows about specific dolphin species, an entire podcast about the planet Jupiter, and, instead of a sports show about all sports, how about a podcast about one owner of one basketball team -- James Dolan of the NBA's New York Knicks? Check out Reign Of Error.
Here is the marketing pitch from Taboo Science: "Taboo Science is a podcast that answers the questions you’re not allowed to ask. It’s hosted by Ashley Hamer, a science writer and podcaster. Every episode dives into a different societal taboo to understand the science that makes it tick, the reasons we don’t talk about it, and the impact that has on society at large. Why don’t we eat people? Why are my swear words different than my parents’? And what makes porn, porn? It’s science class if science class had one of those anonymous question boxes. It’s Taboo Science."
Ashley Hamer is a writer, podcaster, and science communicator in Chicago. She is the creator of Taboo Science and the former host and content lead of the science podcast Curiosity Daily.
When Hamer and Corey Gough co-host Curiosity Daily in the pre-COVID days, I thought they had solid hosting chemistry and brought a certain spontaneous wit to the show. The show has gone through several iterations of hosts, in search, I believe, of that special Hamer-Gough sauce.
Hamer flying solo on Taboo Science is in complete control of the hosting cockpit. She's funny, smart, and a strong interviewer with a flair for the dramatic.
Hamer has interviewed the likes of Sean Carroll, Carl Zimmer, and Alan Alda, written and hosted a number of widely viewed science videos, appeared on several leading science podcasts, and spoken on stages everywhere from C2E2 and New York Comic Con to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and meetings of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in Washington, D.C. and Seattle, Washington.
Ashley Hamer is also a professional saxophonist, a Boston-qualified marathon runner, a new mom, and a cat person. Talk about your diversity of skills. I have questions. Can she play the saxophone while running a marathon? Is the cat jealous of the new baby? How does she have time to do a podcast?
The podcast began in September 2020, and it didn't pull any punches in its first several episodes. Topics included pornography, profanity, cannibalism, penises, and vaginas. I can just sense the uptight people who are organizing bans.
Some of my favorite episodes include the March 25, 2021, one on Marriage with Stephanie Coontz. For those who crow about traditional marriage, you should listen to Coontz talk about the history of marriage as a business transaction instead of a bond created from love.
A recent episode about Asexuality was a learning experience and fascinating and, of course, I can never pass up an episode on poop with Bryon Nelson. Here, Hamer breaks out internet-sourced euphemisms for poop while Nelson explains how for centuries people used "night soil" (poop) for fertilizer.
If you, as a listener, are into your science being serious stuff with people with PhDs speaking in solemn tones, Taboo Science is not for you.
But if enjoy a beaker full of fun with your science lesson, and don't mind your poop being referred to you as "butt nuggets," then Taboo Science is for you.

Drudgery is a great poison
Monday, March 6th, 2023 [Day 9]
Procrastination...it’s sneaking in. I think it’s because I’m allowing myself to get stuck in the “deer in the headlights” mindset.
I already talked with my sibling about realistically what I can do as the very next step moving forward. The number one thing right now is what is the most practical thing to get me “out from under other people’s feet”, and able to take care of myself. So, what does that mean?
Yes, I would like to do more with creating videos and content in general, but will that really get me where I want to be in 3 to 6 months? Odds are, no. Again, number one reason being that I have a mental and physical “redline” on me until I get significantly better.
So, does that mean trading? I have been watching more training videos, and it is really starting to make more sense.
And I keep hearing (from entrepreneurs, etc) “Don’t try to focus on multiple things, or they will all suffer from not doing as well.”
Here’s the thing, let’s say that somebody approached me and said, “If money wasn’t a problem, what would you be doing?”, I STILL am not sure what I would tell them.
It’s not so simple as, “Go play piano, compose music, record music, and so on, whenever I wanted to, stream music whenever, and build cool stuff.” Because somewhere in there nutrition and healthy living comes in. I’m kinda obsessed with those things at those point, and admittedly I’ve found myself reading articles and listening to podcasts about those things instead of studying trading.
And of course there’s good reason for my obsession, since I’ve seen the effects of not having a decent diet and not having enough movement.
Another thing I’ve heard from successful people (including two different 9-figure earners who came from nothing, namely Alex Hormozi and Tom Bilyieu), is “don’t chase the money. Find what you’re passionate about, so that you can put your heart and soul into it, and then the money will come.”
There’s just been this tick, so to speak, in the back of my mind, that “I need to make as much money as possible, so that I can do whatever I want with it to create the world I want to live in.” So, not just for myself, but for the things I find important.
So, is my place to simply do I what love, and use whatever influence I have to bring attention to what matters to me, or is it to learn sales, so that I can help bring attention to health and wellness in that way?
But I NEED to then circle back to the question I must be asking myself (and what you should be asking yourself), “Is this something I would be excited to do when waking up in the morning? Would it be something that would get me out of bed day after day?”
Again, I don’t exactly have the answers to these, but at least I know the right answers to ask.
Always asking, “What is the best and fastest [whatever that means] way to make an income” won’t steer you right, if what you’re doing makes you dread getting out of bed. And very importantly in my case, “Even if I’m alone doing this part of the time, will I still be able to enjoy life?” Because there’s honestly nothing worse than doing something just with the expectation to make money, but then feeling empty at the end of the day because you weren’t able to pursue things, or just spend that time doing things that you know are more meaningful and won’t make you feel regret further into the future.
Now, I’ve just realized that when I started journaling (again), it was partly with the intent to also take time for gratitude. Well, playing off what I was just talking about, I’m glad that I’m realizing that there is a thought process to “figuring life out”. Typical societal norms and such brainwashed me into chasing after money, and elusive “feelings”.
But if I’m totally, 100 percent honest with myself, the things (and times in my life) that have meant the most to me have been times about giving of myself, and investing in the things I care about.
If I look at what I’m most grateful for, it’s often directly connected to others giving gifts to me. Not just physical gifts (although those can have a lot of meaning to me, like some books I have), but gifts of time, encouragement, opportunities to work with them on different projects and jobs, etc.
At this moment in time, I am most definitely grateful that I have “a way forward”. Even if there is some amount of uncertainty on my part, I’m also grateful that I’m aware of the ways I can cope with change, and be less afraid of it.
One other thing I’m also grateful for: that I’m slowly making more steps towards healing and feeling better, instead of stumbling crazily (no pun intended lol) around.
Today, I got a spikey therapy ball to roll underneath my feet and along my peroneal nerve (the one next to my left tibia), to help stimulate, and hopefully encourage nerves to grow back some in my bad foot. That nerve is responsible for stabilizing your ankle, and enabling you to have normal “foot liftoff” each time you take a step. And it also happens to be the one that was majorly damaged when I was rear-ended on my bicycle, and my left tibia was broken.
Then of course, we have the Magnesium Glycinate I’ve been taken. Yo, there’s the “normal weird dreams”, and then there’s the “Magnesium-level” weird dreams. There’s no way to really explain it until you start taking a good Magnesium supplement yourself.
I’m especially sensitive to...basically everything, so even this 400mg dosage seems to be doing quite a bit, to say the least. But...my middle of the night leg cramps have gone away, which is awesome. Have had those for a flippin long time. And I'm definitely staying asleep way easier than before.
Lastly, I’m superbly thankful for the music, and the musicians I know through Twitch. In particular, I’m thinking of Kara Comparetto. I’m listening to her play live right now, and each time I pop into one of her streams, it’s like a healing salve to my mind.
Until next time. Todaloo…
youtube
^One of my favorite arrangements by her. She's also just finished releasing her own arrangements of the entirety of the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, and she's slowly releasing all of them with it's own music video on her channel. She has some super talented people doing camera work and editing for her for sure!

Curated Content: How to Hand-pick Content Your Audience Will Love
Tutorials & tips about Content & Video Marketing.
If you often feel like there’s nothing new under the moon, you might be right. And it might actually be a good thing.
Instead of struggling to come up with new ideas, you can share existing content assets from other sources. Use someone else’s expertise and creative potential to draw attention to your brand — that’s what curated content is for.
Yes, you can curate content without running the risk of making a competing brand the star of the show. Let’s find out how to do that and what kinds of tools you’ll need.
What Is the Difference Between Created and Curated Content?
Firstly, let’s compare these two types of content side by side to spot the main differences.
Original content is tough to produce, while curation-worthy content is difficult to discover. However, you can minimize your efforts without sacrificing the quality of the content that you share — you just need to use content research tools (more on them in the following sections).
As you may have noticed, curated content also requires some fact-checking. But here’s a good rule of thumb: high-quality articles and reports usually already contain all the necessary links and citations, so going through them won’t take much of your time.
If the content piece that you’ve discovered doesn’t have any links, think twice before reposting it because it might contain outdated or inaccurate information.
7 Reasons Why You Should Be Using Curated Content
Successful marketers allocate at least 30% of their marketing budget to content creation. More companies are embracing long-form video content. 86% of consumers say that they prefer authentic, authoritative content, but 57% point out that brands aren’t doing enough in that direction.
Chances are, you’re bombarded with similar stats. Of course, they ring true, but not every company has a huge in-house content creation team to tick all the boxes.
What if you’re a small-business owner or a solo entrepreneur? What if you don’t have that kind of money or energy to spend on video content production, eBook editing, and podcast recording?
Having to create unique, fresh, and valuable content weekly can be exhausting, especially if you have another full-time job. It’s also costly — you’ll need to invest in gear and professional editing software, work with a presentation coach, and so on.
With content curation, you don’t need to worry about any of that. And sharing someone else’s content has many other advantages, too.
By linking to other experts in your industry, you show that you recognize their authority, pay attention to what they have to say, and don’t shy away from healthy competition. Also, that demonstrates that you care about your audience and want to provide them with the latest facts and insights.
Content curation allows you to try out new content formats and see what your subscribers react to. It’s also great to use for the times when you don’t have anything exciting to post about but want to keep your audience engaged.
Now that you have enough reasons to make room for carefully selected content in your content map, let’s talk practice.
How To Curate Content Without Drawing Attention Away From Your Brand
A typical content curation strategy includes five steps.
Look for high-quality publications on social media platforms and expert blogs
Sift through them to find the most relevant content pieces
Share them on your resource
Add your own commentary
Link to the source to help your subscribers find the full version
Reposting someone else’s publications does sound risky, especially when you’re just starting to build your own social media presence. To retain your readership while sharing content, you need to follow these ground rules.
Do thorough research and find reliable content sources on a scale (avoid your direct competitors). Create your own collection of thought leaders and companies who succeed at social media content creation and blogging, and go back to that list whenever you need new pieces of content.
Use curated articles, reports, studies, podcasts, or interviews from different sources. It’ll help you make your content strategy more diverse and avoid focusing too much on a single indirect competitor.
Avoid boring reposting. Create lists, collections, and in-depth stories out of already existing content pieces and turn them into your own assets as well.
Use small chunks of curated content to strengthen your own brand voice. Add expert quotes, stats, takeaways, or even Twitter threads to illustrate your point.
Schedule your curated content in advance. Doing that allows you to fill potential gaps in your strategy and spread curated posts more evenly across your feed or blog.
Share projects and initiatives that you support. Help your partners get more exposure by showcasing their content on your channels.
Add a personal touch to the content pieces you’re curating. Express your own opinion and add it as a comment to make curated content pieces align with your tone of voice and brand personality.
Tag the author, thank them for their work, and encourage them to link to your resources as well. This gesture of appreciation will help you get more backlinks in the future because the authors of the content that you’re reposting might find value in your publications as well.
10 Curated Content Examples
Twitter is a fantastic platform for understanding how curated content works and what you should be sharing with your audience. You can see what industry moguls are sharing with their subscribers and how their audience is reacting.
Here are some ideas that you can also apply to your website, blog, or any other platform that you use.
#1. Surprise your audience
Share mind-blowing facts, shocking stats, or bold ideas with your audience to spark their curiosity and make them stop scrolling. You don’t have to be too formal about it, either. In fact, a brief but catchy comment would be way more useful here.
Don’t forget to link to the original source and express your appreciation of their work. In this example, using URL shorteners makes it easier to tag a few sources in a single tweet.
#2. Inspire your subscribers
It’s not enough to just find an interesting piece of content and repost it, saying, “here’s the link.” You need to motivate your audience to click on that link and pay genuine attention to the content that you’ve picked.
Visuals can be extremely helpful — you can even add custom images to the content that you’re sharing to make it a bit more on-brand without stealing the spotlight completely.
#3. Give your followers some food for thought
Use curated content to share your opinion on emerging trends or global events and spark discussions with your audience. Just make sure that you’re expressing your company’s true beliefs and not just jumping on the bandwagon — 56% of consumers say that too many brands are using societal issues just to attract conscious customers and boost sales.
If you do want to comment on some hot-button topics, double-check your sources to make sure that you aren’t spreading misinformation or presenting a one-sided view. Even though it’s someone else’s content, posting it on behalf of your brand may hurt your reputation.
#4. Make it personal
When curating content, always explain why you’ve decided to share this exact piece and how it can be useful to your audience. Reference your own previous or upcoming publications to build a more coherent conversation with your followers.
Although curated content isn’t about your brand, you can draw connections between it and your own blog posts or email newsletters. It’ll also help your new subscribers discover your social media accounts or other resources related to your business.
#5. Tie curated content to your own product
Use content curation to show how your customers can make the most of your offer. Reading about someone else’s experience with your product or service will help your potential buyers make the right choice.
This type of content also works as social proof since your audience can see how other experts or opinion leaders successfully interact with you or your company and achieve their goals.
#6. Collaborate
You can also curate content created by the brands or opinion leaders you’re partnering with. It will give your reputation a boost because your audience will see that your business has real influence and can be trusted.
This is a great way to feature someone else’s content without drawing attention away from your brand. Collaborations can positively influence the image of your brand and attract a new audience.
#7. Share customer success stories
Curated content can also include user-generated content (UGC) featuring your products or services or mentioning your brand in any other positive way. Customer success stories can inspire other users and increase their loyalty to and interest in your brand.
If you’re sharing a long-form article, make sure to add a brief summary to explain what it’s about and why your followers should read it.
#8. Share content from like-minded creators
Use content curation to show that your brand encourages creativity and is on the lookout for new collaborations and partnerships with creators who share the same values. This type of curated content can also help your audience discover new faces and names in the industry.
If you already have a sizable audience on social media, encourage your subscribers to share their work and get featured on your channels. In that case, you won’t even have to curate content yourself — it’s a win-win situation.
#9. Share expert advice
In some areas, you may not be fully equipped to give your followers expert tips, but it doesn’t mean that you have to stick to generic publications. Share helpful articles written by accomplished professionals, doctors, and practitioners to boost your brand trust.
This is a clever way to showcase your expertise without poaching on someone else’s territory. This type of curated content is especially relevant to skincare, supplement, and beauty brands that aren’t always authorized to speak from a scientific standpoint.
#10. Be playful
Take a break from being serious and share content that has something to do with your brand that you personally find amusing. In this example, we see how a fruit snack brand jokingly points out that one of Harry Styles’ songs is about their grape juice.
Funny curated content allows you to inject some novelty into your feed and makes your brand more humane, authentic, and approachable. In other words, that’s your key to “keeping it real.”
How To Curate Content Using Social Listening and Content Research Tools
Content creation doesn’t happen in a vacuum — first, you need to run a competitor analysis, see what’s currently trending, and which channels your target audience is using. Content curation also requires you to do similar research, although to a lesser extent.
The good news is that you can easily automate your content discovery process and focus on the most interesting part — selecting pure gems and adding them to your content plan.
Here’s how you can achieve that:
Set up Google Alerts to monitor keywords, brand names, industry events, competitors, and so on.
Use social listening tools like Mention, Awario, or Brand24 to get notified whenever someone publishes a new piece of content you would like to link to.
Monitor Twitter trends to see what’s on everyone’s mind and what type of content you should be curating to cater to the needs of your audience.
Use Google Trends to see trending searches at local and global levels.
