Marbled Monday
This Marbled Monday we are sharing London: or, the Progress of Commerce. A Poem by Mr. Glover, printed by Thomas Cooper at the Globe in Paternoster Row, 1739. “Mr. Glover” is Richard Glover (1712-1785), an English merchant, poet, and member of Parliament. Thomas Arnold (the Younger) described Glover in a critical introduction:
“Glover was a man of considerable powers, but he was stronger on the side of politics and practical life than in the field of literature. In his poems the rhetoric of party warfare is more conspicuous than the inspiration of genius.”
I’m not sure what one could expect to find in this book of poems, but Arnold doesn’t seem to have thought too favorably of it: “A chief object of his in writing London is said to have been to exasperate the public mind against Spain.” I guess if you want to be exasperated against Spain come visit us to read the book!
The binding, as you may have guessed, is not contemporary to the text inside it, but is more likely from the 20th century. The marbling pattern is either fantasy or french curl, which looks somewhat like a snail. To me it seems like a cross between the two!

10 Favourite Movies
I was tagged by @iamstartraveller776 😊 thank you!
I am completely rabid about movies I love, and some I rewatch multiple times, because just try and stop me!
1. Persona, by Ingmar Bergman, 1960. I love everything about this film. Poignant, creepy, unresolved tension-y, confusing.
Tumblr media
2. Ex Machina, 2015. I love great sci-fi, I love amazing female characters. Ava broke my heart.
Tumblr media
3. Total Recall, 1990. Speaking of sci-fi. As a massive fan of strange creations of Philip K Dick and his little story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”, I can’t not love this no matter how hilariously this film has aged. Also my undying love of Arnold is strong with this one.
Tumblr media
4. Eastern Promises, 2007. I love everything by David Cronenberg (oops, is my Canadian accidentally showing?), and this is also my favourite Viggo Mortensen work.
Tumblr media
5. Children of Men, oooh look, more sci-fi. Fucking love this post-apocalyptic story. Wow.
Tumblr media
6. Druk, 2020, by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Mads Mikkelsen
Tumblr media
7. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. OK I’m a raging Martin McDonagh fan, and I equally adore In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and Banshees of Inishirin, but I think Three Billboards (at least today) is coming out a bit on top with its utter perfection of a mix of deep sadness, humour, and insanity. Also Frances McDormand is ARGH IM SPEECHLESS I LOVE HER.
Tumblr media
8. The Princess Bride. You want a perfect movie? That’s a perfect movie.
Tumblr media
9. Stalker, 1979, a Tarkovsky masterpiece, and my heartbreaker 💔 I can’t talk about it. I love It too much.
Tumblr media
10. Eyes Wide Shut. Kubrick’s best. I didn’t enjoy it as much on the first watch because I was much younger, but recently it’s been blowing me away.
Tumblr media
HONOURABLE MENTION DOESNT NEED NO LIST. So in my very mathematical PhD thesis I added a whole epilogue dedicated to this little, indie, completely unknown film…. THE MATRIX
Not inundating anyone with a tag, come play!

Arnold Raymond Cream (January 31, 1914 – February 25, 1994) known as Jersey Joe Walcott, was a professional boxer who competed from 1930-1953. He held the NYSAC, NBA, and The Ring heavyweight titles from 1951-1952, and broke the record for the oldest man to win the title, at the age of 37. That record would eventually be broken in 1994. Despite holding the world heavyweight title for a short period, he was regarded as among the best heavyweights in the world during the 1940s and 1950s. After retiring from boxing, he did some acting, playing small parts in a few movies and television shows. He refereed several boxing matches, but after the controversial ending to the second fight between Muhammad Ali and Sonny Liston, he was not asked to referee again. From 1971-1974, he held the elected position of Sheriff of Camden County, New Jersey, the first African American to do so. From 1975-1984, he was the chairman of the New Jersey State Athletic Commission. He was born in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey. His father was an immigrant from St. Thomas, Danish West Indies. His mother was from Jordantown, New Jersey. He was only 15 years old when his father died. He quit school and worked in a soup factory to support his mother and 11 younger brothers and sisters. He began training as a boxer. He took the name of his boxing idol, Joe Walcott, a welterweight champion from Barbados. He added "Jersey" to distinguish himself and show where he was from. He debuted as a professional boxer on September 9, 1930, fighting Cowboy Wallace and winning by a knockout in round one. After five straight knockout wins, in 1933, he lost for the first time, beaten on points by Henry Wilson. On March 7, 1951, he and Charles fought for a second time, and again Charles won a 15-round decision to retain his world title. But on July 18, he joined a handful of boxers who claimed the world title in their fifth try, when he knocked out Charles in seven rounds to become the world heavyweight champion. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. In 2013, he was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CoE7t8dO-eq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Fifa World Cup 2022 - Australia announces team - Wreaderpedia
Australia announces team With Mathew Leckie being the other squad member chosen to represent Australia at a FIFA World Cup for the third time, goalkeeper Mathew Ryan will lead the team in Qatar in what will be his third FIFA World Cup.
Aziz Behich, Milos Degenek, Jackson Irvine, Jamie MacLaren, Aaron Mooy, and Bailey Wright will compete in their second FIFA World Cup this year. Seventeen other players will play for the first time in a FIFA World Cup squad.
After a difficult four years, head coach Graham Arnold stated the Socceroos head to Qatar full of pride and confidence. Arnold said, “It’s been a unique and challenging qualification process. We now arrive in Qatar with an excited squad that will do everything possible to make Australia proud on the international stage.
Thirty-two players have made their national team debuts in the last four years. Every player who has supported the team along this journey deserves my gratitude. Every one of the 68 players we called upon during the qualification campaign contributed to bringing us here.
“Our team’s composition reflects Australia’s multicultural society. We are all connected by the same jersey, even if our boys originate from different parts of the globe and have experienced different journeys, said Arnold.
The Socceroos will aim to advance past the group stages for the first time since 2006 after qualifying for their sixth appearance overall and fifth successive FIFA World Cup.
Nine Tokyo 2020 Olyroos athletes are on the team: Mitchell Duke, who is overage, Nathaniel Atkinson, Keanu Baccus, Thomas Deng, Cameron Devlin, Joel King, Riley McGree, Kye Rowles, and Harry Souttar.
Arnold said, “I’m happy with the progress and maturity of this squad, who now get a chance on the biggest stage conceivable.” “We have worked hard to give younger players an opportunity over the campaign, to expose them to international football, to test them against the best,” Arnold said.
At Al Janoub Stadium, the Socceroos face off against the reigning champions France on Tuesday, November 22, at 10 p.m. local / Wednesday, November 23, at 6:00 a.m. AEDT.

Birthmark
A short horror story by B.E.
The women in my family have port-wine birthmarks, but none ever had any as strange as mine.
Not even my mother, who had one that stretched across her forehead like a bloodshot eye, the pale sclera-white of her skin visible under the glaze of reddish violet. She told me, when I was very young, that my grandmother had one, too, along the back of her head--she, unlike us, had been lucky enough to have one that could be hidden under a bonnet, though her blonde hair still revealed it in the summertime.
“Can I see the ones on the legs?” Thomas asks, chewing the inside of his cheek like a cow chewing its cud. I allow it, even though I am a girl, because Thomas and I are friends, alone in the center of a field of tall summer alfalfa. I can feel his eyes boring into the marks on me in fascination, as he moves around me to see my arms, at the marks on those.
“I like the winter best,” I say, pulling my skirt up. “Pa hates it. But I like it, because I can cover all of ‘em up with my clothes, even the ones on my arms.”
“They’re not so bad,” he says. “They’re not on your face, at least.
“Guess so.”
He sits in front of me in the clear space between the eden-green strands of the grass, looking down at the marks on my legs. They are strange, wobbling lines, not blotches or patches--the lowest two are at my knees, lines that wrap around the joint like the borders of a county.
There are two more on my upper thighs, though I don’t show Thomas those--he’s still a boy, and even though he looks at my markings with nothing but fascination, I still feel a little kernel of shame rubbing at the walls of my chest. The arms are easier to show to him--there are only two marks, just too low to be covered by my short sleeves, broad and awkward unevenly-stamped lines.
“So you’ve got more? On your back?” Thomas asks, sitting on his haunches, looking at me with intent, dust-brown eyes too large for his face.
“Yes. Almost like a corset,” I say, “like a nice corset, the kind rich ladies wear with their jewels. One on my waist, like a belt. One below my shoulders. Oh, and a line down my back, a kinda wobbly one.”
“Like the laced-up part of the corset,” he says, and I nod, happy that he understands. Most boys who live in these parts wouldn’t. He moves around me, and I sit straight, lifting my long frigid-blonde braid so that he can see the very top of the line that travels down my spine, the source of the splotchy red-and-purple river.
“You ever wish that you could have them wiped off?” He asks. “I heard that God sometimes grants big miracles if you pray for ‘em enough.”
“Maybe,” I say, doubtful. “I’ve tried it. Pa makes me pray each night, but nothing seems to work.”
“Shame about that. Real shame. Maybe God’s busy with somethin’ else--” he says, and suddenly a gunshot rings out in the distance.
He freezes, pupils dilating like a rabbit that hears a hawk, and I scramble for my boots, forcing them on over the crumbles of mud on my feet. We can both hear Pa, coming through the brush, forcing his way through it with snaps and tears and nearly inarticulate grumbling. Thomas is off like a shot, running almost on all fours as he crouches, and by the time my father reaches me, panting and huddled in the grass, my friend is nothing but a mole-trail disturbing distant strands.
Pa is a tall man--though I inherited his height, I’m only 13, and he towers over me, so broad and heavy that I am thin as grass and summer wind below him. I stand, looking up at him with a look that must look shameful, and he lowers the rifle to point at the earth, face still and steely with malice.
“I told you I didn’t want no boys ‘round,” he says, voice thick, like smoke from a bonfire. “Told you I didn’t want you foolin’ round like a little whore.”
“He didn’t do nothin’,” I say, arms wrapped around my chest. “Honest.”
“Who was it, then? And why didn’t he come see me, an’ ask if he could talk to you?” He takes my arm--not tightly, but with such strength that I couldn’t run if I tried.
“He and I met while I was out with the chickens. He was on the road going up to town.”
“Sure he was.” Pa shoves my arm away and laughs, the sound like metal clattering to a dirt floor. “Sure, the devil ‘e was. I heard him talkin’ bout your legs, girl. Didn’t hear much, but I heard that. You think you’re the pick of the meat at the market, don’t you?”
“Pa--”
“Don’t talk, pretty girl. Don’t talk, and don’t you ever try and do this again. You’re gonna pray as long as you can tonight. I want your damn tongue to fall out before you stop praying,” and he begins to move, and now the pain comes as I stumble half-backward with him, held in a vise by my arm.
“Pa, I’m sorry--”
“You ain’t sorry yet, Lu,” he says. He looks back at me, from under the shadow cast beneath his brows by the white sun overhead. “You ain’t sorry, yet.”
---
He makes me pray, that night, for hours and hours, for forgiveness, for something I never did. But the praying he makes me do that night is only meager practice for the praying I do during the winter.
Our chickens die when a coyote pack rolls through in the late days of fall, snarling and barking with a sound like mocking laughter. We salvage what corpses we can, and for a while, we eat well, but not well, because while we dine on fresh meat, the knowledge that something terrible to come hangs over us like the fog of their blood. The cattle start to go soon after, the first to a weak cover over a well (it falls in, it screams for hours), the second to a river, the third to disease, the rest tumbling like the articles like a rotting shelf soon after them.
When winter comes, we have little, so little, and my father tears into his meager dollars to buy us what we can. I am grateful to him, even as the food dries up, even as he becomes silent, frighteningly silent, staring at me above the candle that lights our dinner-table with a face like a haunting.
I am not allowed to leave the house anymore.
I only cook--clean--mend--read the scraps of old newspaper used to patch the walls of the house as best I can. I make what food he finds for dinner, if he finds any, and I give more to his portion, and he says almost nothing to me except to remind me to stay in the home, to keep house and to keep out of the snowstorms and the paths of wild things. He fixes the roof and sharpens the knives--those are the only tasks he does around the house, besides force me onto my knees beside him to beg God for something for our stomachs.
And it is in cleaning that I find the box.
It is a small box, barely as long as my forearm and as shallow as the length of my hand, and it is under his bed, dislodged from a long stay deep in the shadows beneath his cot by a storm that shook the house.
I pull it slowly from beneath--it is unpainted, made of thin wood that leaves little splinters in the flesh of my thumb-joint. I remove its lid and look inside.
My mother is there, first, as I remember her--thin, short, with a look in her eyes like the hollow of a tree, unexplainably empty. The mark is clearly visible in the photograph, as she stands next to my father, mottled and dim. Neither of them are smiling. They are younger in this photograph--it is blurry, hard to make out.
Beneath that is a scrap of newspaper that I have a hard time understanding for a moment.
Mrs. Mary J. Letts, 68; Wife and Mother
We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Letts, wife of Mr. Roger Letts and mother to Mabelle Letts, which took place last Thursday due to a tragic accident involving an injury sustained to her head while riding. She is survived by her husband and daughter.
The paper cuts off there. I don’t recognize the name of Letts, and the paper is old; I continue reading as I find another scrap.
Mrs. Mabelle Dawson, 36; Wife and Mother
We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Dawson, who is survived by her husband, Mr. Arnold Dawson, and her young daughter, Lucy Dawson. Their family has our greatest sympathies. She was killed accidentally as she was cleaning a weapon owned by Mr. Arnold Dawson, who claims deepest regret that
I feel my mouth run dry and my pulse hammer against my skin like stone against a drum. That is my mother’s name--that is my name, too, faint against the paper. I don’t understand why these things are in the box, among other pictures and portraits of my mother, and, unmistakably, my mother’s mother, whose mark is just visible in one small portrait of her, clearly done by an amateur hand. I can imagine how it stretched across the back of her head, branching along her skull--I can see my own mother’s mark, clearly, in the center of her forehead.
I feel cold as the wooden floor under my feet as my eyes trace the border of the mark on her forehead for the first time.
“Lu?” my father calls, from downstairs. “Lucy? Lu-cy?”
The starburst on her forehead is strangely jagged. Unsteady. The shape that a bullet hole would make, if someone were shot close in the head. An accident while cleaning a gun. A trauma to the back of the skull. I hear a footstep on the stairs, almost hesitant, its weight barely masked by the slowness with which my father places it down.
“Lucy?” he says. “I prayed to God for a miracle, and he told me what we ought to do. I need to see you, now.”
I can’t breathe. My throat is choked by a snare as I throw myself back, scrambling across the floor and away from the box. My skirt flies up--my legs are exposed, the lines on them obvious in their purpose.
Summers ago, I went to the village with Pa, and we went to a stall hung with pig carcasses. There, there was a picture of a sow, her legs and sides and ribs marked with uneven lines where the different cuts of meat came from. Here was the thigh--here was the shank--here was the cut you made along the spine and the stomach.
I hear a slow, low rumble of creaking wood as he stops outside the door.
“Lucy?” he says, his voice more paternal than I have ever heard it, and I begin to cry--begin to pray to anything, anyone that will listen, pray that something else kills me before he enters, and nothing does.
And the door opens--slowly, too slowly, as though I’ve had a nightmare and he’s coming to check on me like a good father should--and he sees me with the box, with the tears flowing down my face, with my chest heaving in great stops and starts.
He takes a step forward. In his hands, he holds a sharpened butcher’s knife.

Hello again tumblr back on my bullshit
Made a new boy! Tommy my boring man 🥰 I made him a normal-ass guy since my HPHL ocs tend to be freaks of nature that are hard to interact with so I'm gonna tag a few mutuals who might want to have a safe option for once sdklhdsklgs @gcldensnitch @beloved-bucky @catohphm
Tommy's open for friendships!! Comment or dm or whatever!
Thomas Henry Arnolds, aka: Tommy (friends), Bee Boy (neighbors), Honey (people who think they're clever). He's a dumb little halfblood bisexual man who sucks at feelings but is also the sweetest boyfriend ever. His birthday is February 9th just so he can have amethyst as his birthstone. I feel like it fits him. Somebody tell me what an Aquarius is
Love Interest: Maggie Grant @beloved-bucky
Current Friends List:
- Auggie and Charly Grant
- Evie Devitt
- Will Berkeley
- Abbi Bennet
(all above are @beloved-bucky who like me has too many ocs)
- Selina Fawley
- Cassie Bell
(the above belong to @gcldensnitch)
Mini profile under cut!
- Tommy is an ambivert I think? He's very social and good at social situations but he's also very good at being alone and just chilling. He loves to spend time with just him and his honey bees out on the balcony of his apartment where he has a little fountain and a whole planter thing going on so he can have a little paradise in the city (magically protected of course, we can't let anything happen to the bees). Oh also he has a LOT of anxiety sorry to any friends of his
- He's Scottish, idk from where exactly but city, not country. His face claim is a young Jonathan Taylor Thomas:
Tumblr media
- It was originally someone else but the dude had like NO good pictures so. Here we are. We're gonna assume the random "short celebrities" article had his correct height of 5'6" - which isn't even short? Idk short king territory is like 5'4" and under I think but he's good enough
- Tommy's a Gryffindor just because I didn't have an HPHL Gryffindor yet. He's the reserve Beater, gets to play in matches a few times, but he didn't really want to be a full team member anyway; too much of a time commitment. He ends up an animagus in seventh year and my man is a fat little bumble bee! Funnily enough he loves bees but wasps scare the shit out of him
- If someone was to smell him in their Amortentia he'd smell like honey, wildflowers, and a fresh breeze. Maybe a hint of rainy summer nights in there too. His ideal date is either a quiet evening in with a home cooked dinner and some nice soft tunes while he and his partner just enjoy each other's company, OR a trip to a fair with loud music and rides and games and fireworks
- He has an older sister named Janet and a younger brother named Carter. Carter is a muggle like their father and Tommy loves him all the more for it. Janet's a little meaner but she has oldest daughter syndrome so it's kinda fair, because she's the oldest by a full five years. Tommy is only around a year older than Carter so they're very close
- Tommy's a morning person. Ew.
- He becomes a Prefect, but he didn't really want to. They picked him because he's a "good influence" which means he's just never gotten detention
- His favorite class is Herbology
- Favorite color is red. Nerd
- In the future he takes a stable office job at the Ministry doing paperwork and filing and boring stuff no one wants to do. It's not fun, but it pays well and leaves him time to be a dad and go out with his friends/partner and of course take care of his bees

We Just Won A Victory, Then This Hanging Happened (Benlivia)
‘Twas was a heavy rainy day later that evening when Colonel Bradford and Sargent Hickey were sent to the gallows to be hanged. They had won the Battle of Monmouth hours earlier against the British.
“Now we know that you’ve received upwards of 100 pounds from Mr. Mathews, the so-called mayor of New York.” they were inside a wood house in camp with Ben interrogating the two assassins, Caleb off to the side; ready to jump in at any given moment, Olivia keeping one eye on her two childhood friends and the other eye at the traitors, and General Washington’s hiding in the shadows; watching it all go down.
“And Governor Tryon. Your pulse beats high in the Torie’s game, gentlemen.” Caleb chimes in. “Now, tell me, who else in this camp is under British pay?” the Major asked, getting the task back at hand.
Bradford indirectly answers the question, “So there are others.” Ben concludes.
The drums keep bringing Ben back from the flashbacks from the moments before.
Caleb is the executioner, he wears a full black uniform, complete with a black mask that covers his face. He quickly adjusts the rope and moves on to Bradford, who was talking to Worthington.
“The offer is that you hang for counterfeiting, not for treason,” Ben says to Bradford. Hickey intervenes saying that he wants to be hanged for the latter, “To mutiny against you traitors in an act of honor,” was his explanation. The head of intelligence slaps him and explains that his family would be safe if he would be hanged as a forger, if it was for the attempt on Washington’s life, then he can’t-” We aren’t going to hang. You’re going to trade us-”
Olivia speaks of the first time, interrupting him, “And why is that?” she scoffed at Bradford, “If you think that we are bluffing, then you are wrong.” The man looked at the Madame General in the eye, “-For Culper,” finishing his sentence.
The last name alias of Abraham Woodhull hung in the air. Dread filled Ben’s stomach. “Where did you hear that name?” Caleb asked. When Bradford didn’t answer, he settled for violence, harshly pulling the former Colonel by the braid, “Where did you hear that name?!” Olivia didn’t intervene, despite the fact that it was technically her job to keep the two in line.
Washington stepped out of the shadows, suggesting that Hickey must have overheard it when he was standing guard outside his tent. “The first man to tell me the real name of our Agent Culper will be traded to safety on Saturday. The other man will hang tomorrow,” was the million-dollar question.
But neither man answered, “They don’t know.” Washington concluded. “A hanging then, I’ll inform everyone,” Olivia told the room, “Since the two of you didn’t answer, tomorrow turned into today.” She pointed at the traitors.
“The accused...Colonel William Bradford and Sergeant Thomas Hickey having being found guilty on the charge of attempting to pass counterfeit bills-
“-My aim was to kill Washington, Putman, and other-” Hickey didn’t get to finish his sentence because he was pushed off by Caleb, along with Bradford. His head was quickly decapitated. Bradford’s head was, thankfully not severed, but he struggled against the rope around his neck.
Gasps rang everywhere, but a heart-wrenching scream caused Ben to look at his left. Olivia Hamilton. He quickly hugged her and held the Madam General tightly. The Head of Intelligence heard Worthington yell at Caleb and could hear them fighting, but he paid no mind. He then looked at Washington, who signaled an officer to shoot Bradford, ending his life.
The Major could feel the younger Hamilton and the Marquis’ gaze at him like they wanted to burn a hole in his skull with their eyes. The former wanted to protect his twin sister at all costs, even though it’s supposed to be the other way around. Olivia had expressed this one too many times, about Alexander fighting with the new recruits when they looked at her the wrong way. Ben knew that Lafayette harbored a romantic love for Olivia, he too had one, but it was not one-sided. He knew that the two had to make their relationship a secret because the young aristocrat had a wife in France, it would cause a huge scandal that could cause the American-French alliance to dissipate. Because of this, Ben was determined to make his love for Olivia, a platonic one.
The Major put the elder Hamilton down on his cot and quickly stripped her down to her smallclothes. He looked at the knife wound Olivia had gotten when someone tried to assassinate their Commander in Chief during the discussion of the Battle of Monmouth. Olivia had quickly pulled Washington out of the assassin’s way and took the knife meant for him. General Arnold knocked him out and Henry Key was hanged the next day.
“You are not sleeping on the floor, Benji.” Olivia said, loud and clear, “That is a direct order from your General.” With burning cheeks, Ben laid down next to the woman he had first loved.

Can you write about the forgotten general of the revolutionary war, David Wooster, because he was actually my ancestor
Tumblr media
David Wooster was an American general who served in the French and Indian War and in the American Revolutionary War [x]. Following his death during the revolution he has had multiple places named after him including schools, city and trails [x]. He has been coined as a “forgotten hero” of the American Revolution due to his immense efforts.
Born in Statford, Connecticut on March 2nd of 1711 [x], David Wooster came from somewhat distinguished parenthood as his father was a mason [x]. There is unfortunately little known about his early life due to the British burning New Haven in 1779 where his family papers were kept [x]. He was drilled in Puritan principles which has allowed some to speculate the “severe and somber[ness]” of his primary years [x].
Wooster entered Yale College in 1735 (which was quite old for the time) and graduated in 1738. The following year after his graduation when war broke out between the British and Spanish, he joined the colonial militia as a lieutenant (later appointed captain) [x] on the ship Defense [x], however, he saw no action. Primarily, he worked as a coast guard or a “guard-a-coast” [x] from 1740-1743. He was described as “young”, “handsome” and “ambitious” according to some [x]. In 1745 Wooster was in the Connecticut regiment on the Louisburg expedition and on July 4th he sailed for France with French prisoners for exchange [x]. After France, he was sent to England where he was given audience with King George, became a favorite within the society for his good humor and landed a position as captain in the regiment of William Pepperrell in the British Army. He retired in 1748 when the fortress he labored at was returned to the French at the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle [x].
Regarding his more intimate, personal life, on March 6th, 1745, Wooster married Marie Clapp, the daughter of Yale's president, Thomas Clapp [x]. They went on to have four children but only one girl and boy lived to adulthood as the other two died in infancy. Their surviving son Thomas served in the American Revolutionary War [x]. Mary was intelligent and had incredible strength of mind according to those who described her [x]. Wooster settled briefly into domestic life and became a merchant in New Haven where modern day the street he resided bares his name. In 1750, he aided in the establishment of one of the first lodges of Free Masons in Connecticut [x]. Shortly after his marriage, he was captain of a company in the provincial regiment of Andrew Burr and saw service in the Siege of Louisbourg. What occurred afterwards is spoken of previously.
When the French and Indian War broke out, he served from 1755 to the war’s conclusion in 1761 [x]. During the war, he was promoted to colonel and given command of the 3rd Connecticut regiment [x] while being described as having “zeal” and being “unselfish in nature” [x]. He took part in the attack on Ticonderoga in 1758 and in later operations against the fort to recapture it with his men [x] while also being present in the failed Battle of Carillon in 1759. he had a reputation for going against those who attempted to use their higher ranking as a method of abuse. In one instance, a  British soldier attempted to discipline one of Wooster’s men. Wooster went as far as to draw his sword to chastise the adviser on the spot in front of many eyes and disarmed him. He pressed his own sword to his adversary’s chest, he told him that he needed to apologize and never commit his actions again. There was cheering and Wooster won the additional reputation of being a protector and friend to his men [x]. After the war, he returned to his family life.
When the American Revolution broke out with the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Wooster was in charge of the militia at New Haven [x]. In April 1775 the General Assembly appointed Wooster (who was sixty-four at the time) a major general of six regiments to be raised for "the safety and defense of the colony” [x]. In New York City during the summer of 1775 he commanded Connecticut troops on Long Island and at Harlem [x]. On June 22nd of 1775, Wooster was named as the fourth brigadier general of the Continental army [x]. What disappointed him was the continuous appointment of younger men with less military experience (including Israel Putnam) [x]. He was ordered to report to Major General Philip Schuyler in the Northern Department and left New York City on September 28th [x] but his relationship with Schuyler was poor as they constantly disagreed [x]. After taking part in the invasion of Canada, he took part in another siege and remained commandant in Montreal [x]. He was charged with incompetence during his time in Montreal but a court martial eventually cleared him. On January 1st of 1776, Wooster assumed command of all of Canada. The quarreling, however, did not stop there. on April 2nd, in Quebec he fought with Benedict Arnold which only proved his “incapacity for high command” [x]. He was described by Justin H. Smith as "dull and uninspired, garrulous about his thirty years of service … tactless, hearty rather than firm with his undisciplined troops who adored him, at times brutal towards the civilian population of Montreal" [x].
Congress, informed on the subject of his incompetence, recalled him from Canada. Another inquiry also exonerated him of misconduct and he was a brigadier general without employment [x]. Finally given a position after a lengthy duration, he was reappointed major general of a provincial Connecticut militia on October 23rd, 1776. He commanded only small forces in New York before managing part of Fort Independence in May 2nd 1777 [x]. Unfortunately, following a long and arduous military career, on May 27th while opposing the Danbury raid, he was mortally wounded [x]. Wooster's finals words were, "I am dying, but with a strong hope and persuasion that my country will gain her independence” and he died at the age of sixty-seven [x]. While Congress initially intended to erect a monument, they never did and the Masons did themselves in Danbury in 1854 [x]. His bones lay without even a grave mark to declare the spot of his body until 1854 when the Wooster Monument was dedicated [x].
