Marbled Monday
This Marbled Monday we are sharing London: or, the Progress of Commerce. A Poem by Mr. Glover, printed by Thomas Cooper at the Globe in Paternoster Row, 1739. “Mr. Glover” is Richard Glover (1712-1785), an English merchant, poet, and member of Parliament. Thomas Arnold (the Younger) described Glover in a critical introduction:
“Glover was a man of considerable powers, but he was stronger on the side of politics and practical life than in the field of literature. In his poems the rhetoric of party warfare is more conspicuous than the inspiration of genius.”
I’m not sure what one could expect to find in this book of poems, but Arnold doesn’t seem to have thought too favorably of it: “A chief object of his in writing London is said to have been to exasperate the public mind against Spain.” I guess if you want to be exasperated against Spain come visit us to read the book!
The binding, as you may have guessed, is not contemporary to the text inside it, but is more likely from the 20th century. The marbling pattern is either fantasy or french curl, which looks somewhat like a snail. To me it seems like a cross between the two!

Following in @amtrax' footsteps, here are four of my OCs (all from Jump Leads!) and some of the characters that inspired each of them.
Thomas Meaney: Dave Lister (Red Dwarf), Arnold Rimmer (Red Dwarf), Wesley Crusher (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Richard Llewellyn: Arnold Rimmer (Red Dwarf), Dave Lister (Red Dwarf), Simon the Sorcerer (Simon the Sorcerer II)
Captain Lucas: The Second Doctor (Doctor Who), Rupert Giles (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Miles O'Brien (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine)
Captain Whedon: Zap Brannigan (Futurama), Kronk (The Emperor's New Groove), Admiral Pressman (Star Trek: The Next Generation S7E12 "The Pegasus")
But why? Answers below the fold.
I've never made any secret of the fact that Meaney and Llewellyn are Red Dwarf's Rimmer and Lister with their personalities shuffled about. Meaney has Rimmer's career aspirations and Lister's heart of gold, while Llewellyn has Rimmer's cruelty and Lister's lack of drive. Meaney also has Wesley Crusher's smarts, and like Wesley is (possibly!) destined for greater things. Llewellyn, meanwhile, has a mouth that can and will get him into trouble - much like Simon the Sorcerer's personality shift in the second game in the series.
Lucas is set up to be a mentor for Meaney and Llewellyn, a la Giles from Buffy, and genuinely loves travelling from world to world like the Second Doctor. You might think he's more of a Scotty when it comes to Engineering, but consider his fatally back luck - he definitely shares DNA with Miles O'Brien.
As for Whedon... well, I'll hold off on explaining those character influences until season 2.

An independent day and boarding school located within the precincts of Westminster Abbey, Westminster School is accepted as having been founded in 1560; though the educational traditions of Westminster are thought to actually date as far back as the tenth century, and it was only by the personal intervention of King Henry VIII, in 1540, that the school (then ’The Royal College of St. Peter’), was able to survive the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Thanks to Henry’s intervention, the school carried on with forty ’King’s Scholars’ financed from the royal purse; though by that point it’s thought the School had become a ’Public School’ (a school available to those who could pay their own costs).
During Queen Mary I’s brief but bloody reign, Westminster Abbey was reinstated as a Roman Catholic monastery; and again, the School somehow miraculously survived the transition; though when Elizabeth I returned Westminster Abbey to Anglicanism in 1560, she re-founded Westminster School and drew up new statutes to select 40 ’Queen’s Scholars’ from boys who already attended the School.
Dr Busby, a seventeenth-century headmaster, is said to have cemented Westminster’s reputation, as much by his classical learning as for his ruthless discipline by the birch. He is also said to have prayed publicly ’Up School’ (in the School Hall), for the safety of the Crown on the very day of Charles I’s execution in 1649, then locked the boys inside to prevent their going to watch the spectacle a few hundred yards away!
Busby also took part in Oliver Cromwell’s funeral procession through London in 1658; an occasion on which Robert Uvedale (a Westminster schoolboy), succeeded in snatching the ’Majesty Scutcheon’ (white satin banner) draped on the coffin. The banner was presented to the School by Uvedale’s family some two hundred years later as a memento of the occasion.
Demonstrating still continuing determination to cling to its traditions, Westminster School did not adopt the broader changes associated with the ethos of Thomas Arnold (headmaster of Rugby School; made famous during the Victorian era by the novel ‘Tom Brown’s Schooldays’), such as the emphasis on team over individual spirit; in consequence, the School was once again able to retain much of its distinctive character. Similarly, despite pressures, including destruction of the School roof during the Blitz, the School refused to move out of the city. As such, unlike other schools such as Charterhouse and St. Paul’s, Westminster still proudly remains in its original central London location in the grounds of Westminster Abbey.
Westminster Traditions: The ’Greaze’ has been held ’Up School’ on Shrove Tuesdays since at least 1753; the head cook ceremoniously tosses a horsehair-reinforced pancake over a high bar, which was used from the 16th century to curtain off the Under School from the Great School. Members of the School fight for the pancake for one minute, watched over by the Dean of Westminster Abbey (as Chairman of the Governors), the headmaster, the upper years groups of the School, and distinguished or even royal visitors. The pupil who gets the largest weight is awarded a gold sovereign (promptly redeemed for use the following year), and the Dean begs a half-holiday for the whole School. Weighing scales are on hand in the event of a dispute, and any cook failing to get the pancake over the bar after three attempts, would formerly have been ’Booked’ (stoned with Latin primers); though, that particular custom has apparently lapsed!
In a tradition dating back to the coronation of King James II, in 1685, the Queen’s (or King’s) Scholars of  Westminster School have the privilege of being the first commoners to acclaim each new sovereign at their coronation in Westminster Abbey; the boys’ shouts of ’Vivat Regina!’, (Long Live the Queen; or, as appropriate, 'Vivat Rex!’ – Long live the King’), are incorporated into the coronation anthem ’I was glad’.
The motto of Westminster School is: ’Dat Deus Incrementum’; (God Gives the Increase); the school Colour is pink: and famous ’Old Westminsters’ (the term given to the alumni of Westminster School), include: Ben Jonson (poet and dramatist; 1573–1637); Sir Christopher Wren (architect, scientist and co-founder of the Royal Society; 1632–1723), Henry Purcell (composer; 1659–1695); Sir John Gielgud (actor and director; 1904–2000); Andrew Lloyd Webber (composer and producer; born 1948); and Rudolf von Ribbentrop (when his father, Joachim von Ribbentrop, was appointed as Hitler's Ambassador to the Court of St James in 1936).

Founded in 1326 by Adam de Brome under the patronage of Edward II, Oriel College (The Provost and Scholars of the House of the Blessed Mary the Virgin in Oxford, commonly called Oriel College, of the Foundation of Edward the Second of famous memory, sometime King of England), is the 5th oldest constituent college of the University of Oxford, and the oldest of the royal colleges.
As such, Oriel has also been known as King’s College and King’s Hall, and the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom (now His Majesty King Charles III) is the official ’Visitor’ of the College.
The College of the Blessed Mary began with a Provost and just 10 Fellows (called ‘Scholars’), all graduates, who studied Theology, Law and Medicine. Soon after its foundation though, Adam de Brome acquired for the college a property called ‘La Oriole’ on the site of the present Front Quadrangle, and gradually the college came to be called by that name ('La Oriole’ referring to an oratoriolum, or oriel window, forming a feature of the property).
Whilst Oriel remained a small body of graduate Fellows until the 16th century, by the late 18th to early 19th centuries the College is considered to have led the way in reforming academic standards in Oxford and also in a religious revival known as the ’Oxford Movement’. Many great names arrived, among them Dr Thomas Arnold (later Headmaster of Rugby College), and the Blessed John Henry Newman (later Cardinal Newman). By the late 1800s however, Oriel was perhaps better known for prowess at rowing, football and cricket, than in final exams.
The main site of the College incorporates four medieval halls: Bedel Hall, St Mary Hall, St Martin Hall and Tackley’s Inn; the last being the earliest property acquired by the college and the oldest standing medieval hall in Oxford.
The buildings of Oriel College were used as a location for Hugh Grant’s first film, ’Privileged’ (1982), as well as ’Oxford Blues’ (1984), ’True Blue’ (1991) and ’The Dinosaur Hunter’ (2000). Episodes of the television crime series ’Inspector Morse’ were also filmed at the College; though the opera-loving detective’s final scene in ’The Remorseful Day’, the episode in which Morse (played by John Thaw) died, was filmed at Exeter College.
Oriel’s colours are two white stripes on Oxford Blue, (used also on the college scarf, sports clothing and oar blades); and notable people associated with Oriel, include: Sir Walter Raleigh (16th-century explorer); John Keble, E.B. Pusey, and John Henry Newman (later, Cardinal Newman; principal founders of the Oxford Movement); and two Nobel Prize recipients: Alexander Todd (Chemistry) and James Meade (Economics).
Although King Edward II was favourably disposed towards the plans Adam de Brome had formulated for Oriel, the founding of the College coincided with the collapse of Edward’s authority (followed by the King being deposed and murdered), and it was only by dealing with Hugh Despenser, the emerging focus of political power, that Oriel received its ‘royal’ charter on 21 January 1326.
De Brome was the first Provost of the College, and was as energetic in finding the funds to add to its endowment as he was in negotiating the turbulent political situation between the end of the reign of Edward II and the start of Edward III’s.
Adam passed on June 16, 1332. He rests in St Mary’s Church, Oxford.

UAP Timeline
The following timeline—last updated on July 27, 2023—attempts to chronicle major UAP/UFO-related events in the United States from 1947 to the present. Event summaries are likely to be updated or revised pending further research. New entries may be added to reflect the unfolding of current events.
1947JUN24 American aviator and later politician Kenneth Albert Arnold reports the first post-World War II sighting of an "unidentified flying object" (UFO) in the U.S., claiming to have observed nine "shiny" objects flying in tandem at speeds of approximately 1,932 km/h near Mount Rainier, Washington. [Ref.]
1947JUL08–1947JUL09 United States Air Force (USAF) personnel contacts the Associated Press on July 8th to report that they recovered debris from a crashed "flying disc" near Roswell, New Mexico. The U.S. Army retracts the press release on July 9th and publicly announces that the debris recovered were pieces of a weather balloon kite. [Ref.]
1948JAN01–1949APR27 The USAF initiates "Project SIGN" for the purpose of systematically studying UFO phenomena to assess their threat to national security—entailing the collection, evaluation, and dissemination within the government of related data. [Ref.]
1949AUG10–1949DEC27 The USAF initiates "Project GRUDGE" for the purpose of alleviating public fears concerning UFO phenomena. [Ref.]
1952MAR01–1969DEC17 The USAF conducts a systematic study of UFO phenomena under the code name "Project BLUEBOOK", primarily to determine their threat to national security and to scientifically analyze the associated data. [Ref.]
1952JUL12–1952JUL29 A series of UFO sightings in Washington, D.C. are reported by air traffic controllers, airline pilots, and radar center personnel at the Washington National Airport and Andrews Air Force Base. Following these events, USAF directors hold a press conference at the Pentagon and announce that the visual sightings were misidentified aerial phenomena (e.g., stars, meteors, and unknown radar targets) caused by "temperature inversion". [Ref.]
1952JAN01–1988DEC31 The Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO) is founded by Jim and Coral Lorenzen for the purpose of conducting scientific field investigations of UFO incidents, largely directed by University of Arizona atmospheric physicist James E. McDonald and University of California, Berkeley professor James Harder. [Ref.]
1956OCT24–Present The National Investigations Committee On Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) is founded by inventor Thomas Townsend Brown, USMC Maj. (Ret.) Donald Keyhoe, and USN RADM Chief (Ret.) Delmer S. Fahrney in response to a series of nationally publicized UFO incidents in the 1960s, and to conduct transparent scientific investigations of UFO phenomena while serving as an informational depository for civilian Americans and governmental agencies. [Ref.]
1966SEP Ten intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at the Minot Air Force Base (North Dakota) are temporarily rendered unlaunchable by a bright flashing UFO hovering near the perimeter of the base, an incident that was reported by the Minot Daily News on December 6, 1966, and which was later recounted in detail by retired USAF Capt. and Minuteman ICBM launch crew commander David D. Schindele during a press conference in September 2010. [Ref. 1, Ref. 2]
1967MAR24 Ten intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) at the Malmstrom Air Force Base (Montana) are temporarily rendered inoperable by a glowing red UFO hovering high above the base, an incident that was reported by former USAF Capt. Robert Salas, retired USAF nuclear missile targeting officer Robert Jamison, and other former personnel during a press conference in September 2010. [Ref.]
1975OCT28–1975NOV11 The North American Air Defense Combat Operations Center (NORAD COC) receives numerous reports of bright, fast-moving UFOs hovering over nuclear missile launch sites and bomber bases, primarily from military personnel, security alert teams, and air defense staff at the Loring Air Force Base (Maine), Wurtsmith AFB (Michigan), Malmstrom AFB (Montana), Minot AFB (North Dakota), and Canadian Forces Station (Falconbridge, Ontario). The UAPs reportedly evade all pursuit efforts by USAF F‐106 interceptors. [Ref. 1, Ref. 2]
2004NOV14 USAF fighter pilots Cmdr. David Fravor and Lt. Cmdr. Alex Dietrich of the USS Nimitz Carrier Strike Group attempt to engage a white Tic-Tac-shaped UFO off the coast of Southern California, which the USS Princeton (CG-59) had been tracking for two weeks prior. Fravor and Dietrich discuss the incident in detail during a 2021 interview on 60 Minutes. [Ref. 1, Ref. 2]
2007JAN01–2012DEC31 The Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP) is established within The U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency for the purpose of studying unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). [Ref.]
2015JAN01 NASA provides $1.1 million in funding to the Center for Theological Inquiry (CTI) to study the societal implications of astrobiology and how humans might react to an announcement of the discovery of life beyond Earth, the results of which were published in CTI's magazine Fresh Thinking (Issue No. 1, 2018, pages 32-45; Issue No. 2, 2019, pages 6 to 15). [Ref.]
2017JAN01–2020DEC31 The Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) is established within the Office of Naval Intelligence for the purpose of standardizing, collecting, and reporting UAP sightings. [Ref.]
2020APR27 The Pentagon formally releases three videos—"FLIR", "GIMBAL", and "GOFAST"—containing footage of UAPs that were captured by infrared cockpit instrumentation displays from United States Navy (USN) fighter jets, which also records audio communications between the pursuing pilots. [Ref.]
2021APR16 The Pentagon confirms that publicly-leaked video footage and photographs of triangular and spherical UAPs were captured by USN personnel aboard the USS Russell in 2019. [Ref.]
2021JUN25 The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) releases its Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena, which details its assessment of 144 unexplained military reports of UAP encounters between 2004 and 2021, the majority of which were registered across radar, infrared, and electro-optical sensors. [Ref.]
2021JUL26–Present Harvard University astrophysicist Avi Loeb launches the Galileo Project, an international scientific research effort "to bring the search for extraterrestrial technological signatures of Extraterrestrial Technological Civilizations (ETCs) from accidental or anecdotal observations and legends to the mainstream of transparent, validated and systematic scientific research". [Ref.]
2022JUL01–Present The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) is established within the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense for the purpose of studying UAP. [Ref.]

Here's some Templars whose research distracted me very well from the happenings in Paris and the fact I'm ordering food via phone to go out as little as possible. Okay. Here's what I found:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transcript of the first and second page:
André de Montbard was born on November 5th 1097. All we know is that he had richt even noble parents and that he was the fifth Grand Master and founder of the Templars.
Bertrand de Blanchefort was the sixth Grand Master and was born sometime in 1109. He fostered the Templars as guardians of travelling Christians rather than brutes despite their weaponry. For three years he was a prisoner of was and went on one single expedition, declining a second.
Philip of Nablus, also: of Milly actually a Jerusalem-born man in 1120. Wasn't too fond of being Grand Master yet submitted to Almaric pressuring him. He became seventh Grand Master and resigned in 1171.
Ode de St. Amand was the eigth Grand Master born in 1110. He was captured by Saladin in the battle of Morj Ayyun, to the dismay of his fellows since he was described as a headstrong guy, leading in both praise and resentment and being a valuable member.
Arnold of Torroja born in wherever and whenever, he was the ninth Grand Master at the ripe age of 70. He worked on Hispaniola in the Reconquista. His capability in negotiating even with Saladin made him an important GM, so important that his tomb was only discovered in 2018, very well hidden from others.
Gerard de Rideford hid his birth year but died in 1189. Used to be the 10th Grand Master of the Templars. He used king Henry II's money to bring more troops to Jerusalme. Apparently he was pretty beloved, as Saladin offered his life for a peaceful surrender, which succeeded and he was released to Tortosa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transcript of the third and fourth page:
Robert de Sablé was born a lord of Sablé in 1150. Not only was he the eleventh Grand Master but also member of the Valiant Order. Helped Henry Hunior revolt against his daddy Henry II and also convinced Islamic troops to retreat in the third crusade.
Gilbert Erail (or Horal) born whenever, died in 1200. He was the twelfth Grand Master and aspired to wage peace, not war, in between Christians and Muslims.
Philippe de Plessis castle-forn or rather fortress-born in France in 1165. Was the thirteenth Grand Master of the Templars and had semi-good relationships to the Hospitallers (kinda like the Templars but evangelican Maltesers). Suggested a peace treaty with Malek Adhel.
Pedro de Montagut (or Montaigu) died in 1232 while still being a Grand Master and ways a friend of Guillaume de Chartes, whoever that was. Made a deal with the Muslims: they gave up Jerusalem while the Templars stopped the siege of Damietta. Most importantly he got a piece of the True cross, I wonder if that's still somewhere?
Armand de Lavaie he was born in 1178 in Calabria and elected Grand Master. Death is really unclear, some say he died in battle, others say he survived capture. In 1239 he arrived in Acre for a treaty with a sultan.
Richard de Bures is somewhat of a ghost since all we know is he died in May 1247 and was the seventeenth Grand Master.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Transcript of the fifth and sixth page:
Guillaume de Sonnac a noble-born Frenchman whose birth date is unclear. Took part in the successful 7th crusade. He worked as a chronicler for the Templars, lots of information we know on them cites him as source. He replaces Périgord while this guy was captured, and his death was the end of the 17th crusade.
Renaud de Vichiers was the 19th Grand Master of the Templars and the preceptor of Saint Jean-d'Acre. He was having issues with Hugues de Joug and had to throw him out of the order to stop their fight. Lois IX of France was a supporter and financer of Renaud, but he again fought with him and parted int he end over a diplomatic mission. He retired in a monastery, and if not alone, he argues to this day.
Thomas Bérard wrote letters of misery to king Lois despite being twentieth Grand Master and somewhat respectable. He initiated a cooperation with the Hospitaliers Teutons and yielded the last island's fortification in June. Asking the Pope for help he waged the 8th crusade which became the last since Lois died. His most significant win: a 10-year-truce for Muslims and Christians.
Thibaud Gaudin another man with rich parents boen in 1229 was the 22nd Grand Master of the Knights Templars. Demanding people from Cyprus for a siege in Sidon wasn't successful since the reinforcements never came, so he left the Holy Land in ashes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That's Jaques de Molay, the 23rd and last of the Knights Templar's Grand Masters. I found a painting depicting him and it showed me how Templars looked like, from an ancient point of view, not one in Hollywood. Templars were called Knights Templars and would own and wear a normal knight's armour during the day. Above that, they had a white cloak with a black Christian cross on it, and a leather belt in which they could carry their swords in.
Molay lead the order from the 20th April of 1292 until Pope Clement V was having none of it and dissolved the order in 1312. After the fall of Acre the Catholics retreated to Cyprus, the headquater of Jerusalem. He wanted to obviously keep the order and tried to rebuild the Templars, raiding several cities in the 1300s at the coast of Egypt and Syria (not very Christian huh?). They lost in Ruad and had to retreat to the shore, always feeling the pressure to collaborate with other Christian forces. Molay was sent to France to meet up with the Pope and arrived in 1306 or 1307. He even asked the Pope to wipe the name of the Knights templars clear and adress the rumours and accousations.
What I gathered from all of this? There is no mention of the Lux Veritatis and the order was dissolved and never officially continued. Now, theory: what if someone started over and renamed the club into the LV? Could that be possible? I mean, there's plenty of ties to France...

The Legacy of West Point Academy's Football Dynasty
Tumblr media
The legacy of the United States Military Academy at West Point stems from a rich tapestry of history, resilience, and excellence. Beyond its contributions to the nation's defense, West Point boasts a storied football tradition that intertwines with the academy's profound narrative.
Established in 1802, the academy's strategic location along the Hudson River played a pivotal role in American history during the Revolution. It remained an unyielding fortress, eluding capture even during the treacherous betrayal attempt by General Benedict Arnold.
The visionaries behind West Point sought to create an institution dedicated to warfare science and the development of military leaders. President Thomas Jefferson, despite initial opposition, acknowledged the necessity of such an academy for safeguarding the nation's interests and expanding its territories.
Under the stewardship of Major Sylvanus Thayer, known as the "Father of the Military Academy," West Point underwent significant transformations. Thayer raised academic standards, instilled military discipline, and established civil and military engineering as the foundation of the curriculum.
Throughout the 19th century, West Point graduates played pivotal roles in the country's development, contributing to infrastructure projects like the Panama Canal and assuming leadership positions in various conflicts, including the Civil War.
Post-Civil War, West Point continued its commitment to tradition, discipline, and excellence. Despite the austere atmosphere, the academy slowly integrated African-American cadets, albeit facing challenges like institutional prejudice and "silencing."
World War I showcased the bravery of West Point alumni, notably General John J. Pershing, who commanded the American Expeditionary Force in Europe. The war prompted curriculum modernizations to incorporate advancements in science and technology.
The interwar years saw a cadre of distinguished graduates who would become pivotal leaders in World War II, including Douglas MacArthur, George Patton, and Dwight Eisenhower. West Point alumni led the majority of significant ground and air units in the war.
In 1975, West Point welcomed women into its ranks, marking a pivotal moment in its history. The subsequent years witnessed a surge in diversity among the Corps of Cadets, fostering a more inclusive and representative academy.
Amidst this rich history, West Point's football legacy stands tall. The 1944 Army squad, under coach Earl "Red" Blaik, carved a football dynasty unparalleled in its dominance. Featuring talents like Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard, the team's extraordinary accomplishments and unbeaten streaks remain unmatched in college football history.
But greatness didn't rest solely in the past. The subsequent seasons, particularly in 1945, saw Army's football ascendancy continue. Led by stalwarts like Blanchard, Davis, and Arnold Tucker, they pursued a new dynasty. The 1945 squad embarked on a journey to match the previous year's feats, culminating in another national championship, validating their claim as one of the greatest teams in college football history.
The narrative of West Point's football triumphs extends beyond the World War II era. Though postseason bowl appearances became a rarity until 1984, when the team triumphed over Michigan State in the Cherry Bowl, it continued solidifying its legacy. Post-war periods saw the Army's Black Knights repeatedly showcasing their mettle in postseason battles, from the Peach Bowl victory over Illinois in 1985 to their resilience against Alabama in the 1988 Sun Bowl.
Even in later years, like the stirring 1996 Independence Bowl clash against Auburn, the Army's indomitable spirit persisted. Despite facing formidable odds, their tenacity and never-say-die attitude illuminated the field, leaving an indelible mark in the hearts of fans and foes alike.
