I am becoming a firm believer that Astarion was raised/lived in Waterdeep before ever becoming a Magistrate in Baldur's Gate and being turned.
The fact that his tombstone uses Waterdeep's calendar feels like a hint towards it. Could have been an oversight from the team (it is kind of needlessly complicated) but it would be neat if it was on purpose.
Also, his first answer to the magic mirror below the blighted village hints that he misses his "real home, the one he hasn't seen in centuries." This could be a literal house, but alternatively if we interpret it as a "hometown" instead, it would mean he's not from Baldur's Gate at all.
He certainly fits the bill for a high elf who hails from Waterdeep, imo (snobby lmao) but Waterdhavians are also known to be, uh, not quite as shitty. He might have moved to Baldur's Gate because he knew he could be more successful (and corrupt) there.
Mostly I love the idea that he's from Waterdeep because it adds so much depth to his petty dislike of Gale. Of COURSE he hates Gale at first!! He is the poster boy of Waterdeep and everything a Waterdhavian should be! It's something Astarion would never be able to return to being, forever changed by centuries of slavery and torture. And it makes him bitter, because Gale reminds him of the place he used to call home.

Okay, so, real talk, I did not actually like everything in this book, but I still fucked with it SO HARD. Like, honestly, I picked up what this was putting down (a little heavy-handedly, but done so well imho???) and the WAY IT WAS WRITTEN????
Like, I did a course on the Aeneid. And obviously it was a Roman mythos, not Greek, but DAMN, CLAIRE NORTH. I could see my translations!!! Written in the vernacular of english!!! RiGHT THERE IN THE TEXXT!!!! I GOT SO FREAKING EXCITED!!! It's just, such little things. The phrasing of a certain line. The odd usage of certain similes or metaphors that go off about people or places. The strange diversions to explain events or people right in the middle of the text before jumping straight back into the story. IT WAS SO VERGIL GUYS I SWEAR.
(i haven't had to translate the greek myths sorry guys and I read the odyssey so many years ago in english many apologies am working off what I got)
And, like, as I said, it was very heavy-handed as it backhanded the greek poets for ignoring the women but, like, she was right??? It was insane guys. It was absolutely insane. And everyone was so nuanced and had personalities and hopes and dreams and backstories and at points I was worried she was going to sacrifice the guys to further the women??? Which, like, I understand the irony, and obv couldn't super fault her for it, but she ended up balancing everyone out so well??? Like the guys were in the background instead but they were still all unique and had different priorities and shit.
Just, this whole book was such a breath of fresh air. Damn.
#as a believer in odypen tho I am a little concerned with how the trilogy is gonna go#but i dont think i can blame her#and honestly i'm not a hundred percent sure if its bc it was thru hera's eyes and if there was a biased narrator#WHICH IS SUPER COOL IN AND OF ITSELF#and obv as a major pjo reader I was eyeing hera with hella suspicion#but obviously this is someone else's interpretation of hera and i honestly kinda fucked with her#like i didn't super like her all the time but she was a damn good narrator#like i didn't like clytemnestra a whoooole bunch like hera but also yeah i could absolutely respect her#like shit this book SLAPPED#I still get so fucking excited about the actual writing itself#it was such a cool blend of classical-writing and just straight up british slang it was so much fun to read fr fr#would recommend if you like feminist books and/or classic greek retellings#i'd have to research to see if any of the things happened in the background of the odyssey or some shit#but overall its a really neat read i think#just yelling into the void#ithaca#ithaca by claire north#meme time#hera#the odyssey

reading other short stories and novels and essays and interviews from sapkowski is so satisfying because not only are these fun to read in of themselves but when my mind returns to the witcher i am like

NOT just the love as illness BUT#iseult of the white hands telling tristan that iseult of the golden hair was indeed on the ship in this retelling by sapkowski when#in the general way it goes (as what i gleaned from wikipedia) she lied in jealousy and told him the sails were black#maladie joins the group of 'i thought this would be really difficult to understand without the background knowledge...'#'... but it only took two to three wikipedia pages to make sure i understood what's going on'#and again no i probably didn't catch every reference or even understand perfectly. it's a first read after all#but did i have fun? was i emotionally moved? YES!#after reading tandaradei! i am like 90% more understanding of what he meant by the whole 'eyes of ugly girls' thing from the last wish#me beginning the story and it's going on about how she's not pretty: 'jeez i dont see how that's really relevant man'#me ending the story and it ends like *that*: 'I SEE.... anybody else ever think about how some signs of early childhood neglect and some signs of autism look very similar. mainly the trouble with speech and trouble with eye contact, trouble with social conventions, extreme distress to certain noises, emotional regulation things. But for different reasons depending on whether its from trauma or being autistic, idk. its confusing. had a long post in drafts abt this but im not gnna dig for it.. (too many posts in there.. maybe another day )
#spent a good deal of my childhood with speech counselors trying to help me catch up on spoken language. & teaching me to make eye contact#im glad that they focused on the symptom rather than a dx. altho i had 2 speech counselors tell me to consider asking my parents to get me#screened for autism#nowadays i really do not think i have it. and i dont see any benefit in being screened for it really#because 2 psychiatrists could have totally different interpretations and opinions of me#and if they knew my childhood background maybe itd skew their view somehow even more#every now and then will get someone telling me they believe i have it though. even actual autistic ppl#i think those ppl have kind intentions and want to help. but i think they r wrong#i relate to autistic ppls struggles a lot and find advice meant to help them helpful 4 me. but it doesn't mean im necessarily autistic.#life feels like a cluster fuck of symptoms and trying your best to find help for those symptoms regardless of what label is slapped on u by#a psych. lol#txt

Has anybody seen the Red and Black ballet? It's based more on Coppola's Dracula film more than the book, but it's still gay as hell and has an amazing sense of horror.
#dracula ballet#tw flashing lights#there are some flashing lights#the lighting and backgrounds really help set the atmosphere#the costumes are immaculate!#the violins and woodwinds really shriek and lend to a creepy eerie unsettling-ness that permeates the entire show#the choreography is really more akin to interpretive dance for the vampires (and their victims when they get them under their spell)#my only complaint is that there is no quincey; but they make up for it with 3 scenes of shirtless dudes in the first act alone!#also it's like 2 hours long so it might be hard for some ppl to sit down and watch it all in one go#Youtube

lore drops!!!! there's a lot of possibilities to make stuffs work with nia with the new information i have
the first idea is to say that nia's original backstory did happen separate from ari. meaning that she technically did have a childhood and the past was just altered to make it possible, along with becoming an interceptor, but got super unlucky with bio parents. basically the time person added a new character to the timeline with a backstory and had the other main characters rest in her subconscious while nia lived her life.
the second idea is that the backstories are one in the same, so it happened to ari (and axel) and nia suffered the same effects and such under the illusion it was her memory and hers only. fun fact, i originally imagined nia having two other siblings, one specifically being a brother she was close to. that's ironic lmao
the third, ari was simply reborn much earlier into nia and is revived as a newborn instead of a 17 year old, and ari is just a past life, which also is closest to canon while also not changing as much. here the only thing that was altered in the past was the interceptor stuff, plus getting nearby people in the area to discover baby nia, and it was just by chance that nia got terrible parents. (they weren't terrible in the beginning. things just went on a downward spiral as she got older.)

#super interesting to see how Tony’s employees interpret the overlap between Tony Stark and Iron Man#because obviously they’re the same person#but Tony as Iron Man strangely inhabits a different standing as purportedly his own employee#albeit an employee that has a lot more physical power than all of the other employees because of the Iron Man suit#and a much more famous and well-regarded figure than all of the other employees because Iron Man is a famous superhero#and an employee that is able to call on the power of the man running the company by claiming his authority whenever Tony isn’t there#which is inherently whenever Iron Man is there#because even though Iron Man is able to call upon that authority he doesn’t in the eyes of all of other employees inhabit that same space#here they balk at following Iron Man’s orders because in their mind they don’t work for him#and they interpret Iron Man’s feelings as so much like Tony Stark’s expected ones#because they think Iron Man is just that invested in the company#and their takeaway from that is that they should all be as invested#following what they believe is another employee’s example#I’m curious about what people assume Iron Man’s background to be#obviously Tony is wealthy and was raised wealthy#and Jarvis was shocked a few issues ago when he saw what he thought was Tony picking up after Iron Man#because it was so unexpected for someone who has so many people working under him doing things for him#that Tony would ever do something like that himself#and obviously Tony is really well-respected by his employees as a businessman and as an inventor#but I wonder if because Iron Man’s job is so physical that that helps people not believe that he could be Tony Stark#like right before this Iron Man was overseeing a Stark Industries rocket launch and got hit hard by the shockwave and almost crashed#maybe not something people would expect Tony Stark to subject himself to#marvel#tony stark#my posts#comic panels

i'm so glad we're going to the castle after all lol. i picked to let the cat choose because 1. the cat is a competent and respectable leader and 2. i hoped it would mean essentially just letting you choose your favourite
The weird animal researcher's abandoned castle ruins aren't the same location as the creepy snowy castle mentioned in the first poll, but I am glad we get to go to some sort of old castle regardless >:3 (assuming he can actually make it there). This one is actually cooler, since old ruins are always more fun than upkept structures anyway. Navigating the decaying property might be an issue though lol

But I'm also not sure whether I want to follow the canon#rules of my setting OR just have this be a one-off vaguely fantasy inspired adventure world just for this poll thing#ANYWAY - if it were in my setting - then talking animals are not really a thing there (though pseudo-talking animals that are#actually just manufactured puppet creatures enchanted by magic or with someone else's soul inside or etc. could exist#but not like LITERALLY.. ''this is just a cat who can magically talk'' lol)#However if it's not my setting and doesn't have to follow the rules of the magic system there - then theoretically the cat could actually#be like.. one of those Magically Intelligent Companion Animals from fantasy stories and could possibly be given the tools#to speak or communicate better. Though I think thats also not as much fun lol. I like the limitation that even if it WERE some sort#of very intelligent magical animal - it's still confined by the boundaries of not being able to communicate well and thus#just has to follow around Kind Of Heart Silly Of Mind adventurers rolling their eyes as obvious answers to problems#are looked over or bad decisions are made lol#ANYWAY. I don't have any background decided about The Adventurer (like how he met the cat. etc.) since the story should be kept vague#for people doing the polls to fill in the blanks. So really it could be up to interpretation. The general public can decide in their minds#whether it's just a normal very loyal cute cat. a magically intelligent cat. some mix of the two. etc.#ANYWAY
