The kid looked up. There was a girl watching them. People were passing up and down the street, and some of them walked between the kid and the girl, but she stood stock still and just stared at him. And at Maurice. She had the same nail-you-to-the-wall look that he associated with Peaches. She looked like the kind of person who asked questions. And her hair was too red and her nose was too long. And she wore a long black dress with black lace fringing. No good comes of that sort of thing.

Discworld inktober day 12 - Dangerous Beans
This is one of my favorite little characters from The Amazing Maurice book. Dangerous Beans is the rat Clan’s much-needed philosopher, finding and “disarming” dangerous ideas for the group.
As always, Tips appreciated ♥️

I love the way Terry Pratchett values people with all kinds of body shapes and of all ages, and even of all levels of intellect.
Sam Vimes (my beloved) is often acknowledged as "not the sharpest tool in the shed" but BY GODS does he get shit done and is the RIGHT shit.
Juliet Stollop is dumb as a box of rocks but it's her straightforward mind that says to (smart and clever) Trev Likely and Glenda Sugarbean "are you stupid? You're talking about Mr Nutt! Of course he isn't evil!"
Sybil Vimes is radically kind BECAUSE OF and NOT inspite of her size.
Junior Postman Groat is old and creaky and INVALUABLE to the post office!
Stanley Howler is young and a bit crazy but ALSO has his value recognised by Moist and given an important job, and he does it really well!
Sergeant Jackrum is massively fat and appears stupid but is so sharp that he saves the day and (redacted because I'd hate to spoil, even if the book isn't at all new).
I don't know it just makes me happy and wish more people read Discworld
PS I'd love it if others added their thoughts

I love when selfish protagonists have had an arc of growing a conscience and regretting past mistakes over the course of a book, and purposefully make a big sacrifice for someone else like this.

The eagerly anticipated animated feature film The Amazing Maurice premieres in cinemas and on Sky Cinema in the UK today.
The movie is based on the Carnegie medal-winning novel The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents by Sir Terry Pratchett, originally published in 2001.
In The Amazing Maurice, a Sky Original, Maurice is a streetwise ginger cat who comes up with a money-making scam by befriending a group of self-taught talking rats. When Maurice and the rodents reach the stricken town of Bad Blintz, they meet a bookworm called Malicia and their little con soon goes down the drain.
This animated family film is based on the wildly popular Discworld ® novels and will star Hugh Laurie (Avenue 5) as Maurice, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) as Malicia, David Thewlis (Wonder Woman) as Boss Man, Himesh Patel (Yesterday) as Keith, Gemma Arterton (The King’s Man) as Peaches, Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) as The Mayor, David Tennant (Doctor Who) as Dangerous Beans, Ariyon Bakare (His Dark Materials) as Darktan, Rob Brydon (Roald & Beatrix: The Tale of the Curious Mouse) as The Pied Piper, Julie Atherton (Avenue Q) as Nourishing and YouTuber Joe Sugg as Sardines.
The film is co-produced by Sky, Ulysses Filmproduktion and Cantilever Media in partnership with Global Screen, with animation studios Studio Rakete (Hamburg) and Red Star Animation (Sheffield). The film has the full support of the Terry Pratchett estate and is produced in association with Narrativia. Producers are Julia Stuart (Sky), Emely Christians (Ulysses), Andrew Baker and Robert Chandler (Cantilever Media) and Rob Wilkins (Narrativia). The Film is directed by Toby Genkel, co-director is Florian Westermann, from a screenplay by Terry Rossio.
The Amazing Maurice is currently scheduled to release in the USA, Australia and New Zealand in January 2023.

'No, I will not join you, liar in the dark. I prefer our way. We are silly and weak, sometimes. But together we are strong. You have plans for rats? Well, I have dreams for them.'
