The Hooked Generation (1968)
"Man, you cats are hot! You're hot, baby!"
"What are you talking about, we're hot?"
"You knocked off the Coast Guard men, right? Right? Right? Am I putting you on so far?"

November Book Roundup
Tumblr media
Nona the Ninth (”The Locked Tomb”, book 3) by Tamsyn Muir, 2022 ★★★★★
Where do you even start when trying to talk about a “Locked Tomb” book. I could summarize the plot accurately and sound like the avenging ghost of a planet speaking through a dying soldier’s mouth, but that seems like a waste of time. The characters are charming, the themes of the enduring nature of love and trauma are beautifully heartbreaking, and you’ll learn a number of jolly interesting facts about cows. This is a great book in a great series. I can’t wait to see how Muir wraps this whole thing up.
Tumblr media
Moira’s Pen - A Queen’s Thief Collection by Megan Whalen Turner, 2022 ★★★★★
It took my wife an embarrassingly long time to convince me to read The Thief, but since then the Little Peninsula has become one of my favorite settings. I’ve seen some marketing materials say Moira’s Pen is a good way into this lightly sprawling series, but that’s a con I doubt even Turner could pull off. The book itself is a collection of short stories, metatextual prose pieces that give context, gorgeous illustrations, and some poetry. Like everything else in the series, it was all clearly written by someone much smarter than me who has decided to never acknowledge the gulf that exists between our intellects. If you haven’t read any “Queen’s Thief” you should go read the whole thing, then pick up Moira’s Pen. If you’re already a “Queen’s Thief” fan, you’ve already read Moira’s Pen and don’t need me to tell you it is good.
Tumblr media
Thud! (”Discworld”, book 34) by Terry Pratchett, 2005 ★★★★★
This was my third, fifth, or possibly eighth time through Thud! I love “Discworld” deeply, as all right thinking people do; but the Watch subseries and its long suffering protagonist -- His Grace, the Duke of Ankh, Commander Sir Samuel Vimes -- hold an extra special place in my heart. This book sees Vimes embroiled in the growing tensions surrounding the anniversary of the Battle of Koom Valley, a dwarf supremist agitator, a stolen painting with a Dan Brown-esque secret, and a quasi-demonic being of pure vengeance. The whole thing is funny, thoughtful, and charming. Certainly not a good place to start with “Discworld”, but a wonderful place to get to.

The Woods Are Always Watching by Stephanie Perkins, 2021 ★★★★☆
This book took me three attempts to get through, but that isn’t a slight on Perkins or her work. The plotting is impeccable, the writing starkly gorgeous, the characters rich, and the whole thing just drips with tone and atmosphere. Woods involves two high school best friends who are about to separate for college on opposite sides of the country. As a last hurrah for their friendship that set out on an ill fated backpacking trip that swiftly plunges into a nightmarish struggle for survival. This is going to sound profoundly silly, but the hardest part of the book for me to get through was the beginning where it is just a backpacking trip with two people who are having a bad time because they don’t know what they’re doing. Once the book does enter tense crisis survival mode I started to have a much better time. I know how to react to fictional characters being in life or death peril, but I have less experience with shouting at them about how serious blisters while in the back country is a legitimate medical emergency. This book definitely gets a recommendation, though in the interest of doing my due diligence I do need to throw up a trigger warning for sexual violence.
By the Numbers:
Total Books: 4
Genre: Science Fiction (1), Fantasy (2), Thriller
Decades: 2020s (3), 2000s (1)
Author Stats: Women (3, 75%), POC: 0 (0%), Queer Authors: 1 (25%), Living Authors (3, 75%)
Pretty light month for reading, this November, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Have you read any of these? I’d love to hear your throughs and experiences.
But please don’t tell me what to read next. I have so many books to read, gang. Please don’t stack that tower any higher, I’m begging you.

Happy end of January! here are all the books I read this month
Black AF History: The Un-Whitewashed Story of America by Michael Harriot.
Exactly what it says on the tin! Very good pop history book, tremendously well researched; actually very funny. I HIGHKEY recommend the audiobook if you can get it. Favourite book of 2024 so far.
Benjamin January mysteries by Barbara Hambly. I've read three of them this month because they're excellent. (A Free Man of Color, Fever Season, Graveyard Dust.)
Historical fiction + murder mystery set in 1830s New Orleans, and I love the atmosphere as much as I do the characters. You know those books where the city is its own character? THAT. Excellent vibes, very thoughtfully researched, and the character dynamics are excellent. (CW for period typical racism all over the place as the main character is a dark-skinned Black man in 1830s New Orleans; no gratuitous edginess)
Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky
THIS BOOK HAS SPIDERS IN IT. Just putting it out there because I very much missed it, and the spiders are a big deal. Scific, space opera. 10/10 would rec unless you're violently arachnophobic, then proceed with caution.
Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones
Second book of the Indian Lake Witch trilogy. Unfortunately not as cool as the first but I'm hype for the third book coming out! If you like poetically described gore, and badass horror ladies, read the first book first. This one isn't quite on that level but there IS death and destruction <3
Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Burkeman
I can't believe I 1) finished a self-help book and 2) I'm really out here recommending it to people, but I really found it useful. Will wonders ever cease?
Nineteen Claws and a Black Bird by Agustina Bazterrica
Horror short stories collection. A couple were bangers, a few were absolute duds.
Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez
Do yourself a favour and don't read this. Allegedly historical fiction; in practice, the "fiction" part is extremely dull and the book doesn't have anything going for it except the ripped-from-the-headline case of the Relf sister. The cover is pretty, I guess.
Unwell Women: Misdiagnosis and Myth in a Man-Made World by Elinor Cleghorn
Tremendous read. Medical misogyny through the ages, with an eye to intersectionality; I have some nitpicks about the tone of the writing but I'm still going to recommend it to everyone. (link goes to my GR & we should be friends)
Vendetta ai Mondiali by Paolo Foschi
This is a prize for a few elects (Italian speakers). Italian sports-themed detective novel except the grizzly detective is gay... I feel like this was written for ME personally.
The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett
Unfortunately, I'm running out of new-to-me Discworld novels! This made me very happy but also very emo.

Welcome to Letters2fiction!
The concept here is to send in a question or a letter request, and you’ll get a response from your fictional character of choice, from the list below. Please stick to the list I’ve made, but of course, you can ask if there’s some other characters I write for, I don’t always remember all the shows, movies or books I’ve consumed over the years and I’m sure I’m missing a lot 😅

The Guardian Interview 2022 (Simplified Bullet List Version Because Its 1 am)
Major Spoilers ahead so read at your own discretion
(They mention the 2019 pilot so I’ll go over that first)
Alright so someone has given me a link to the pdf of this interview, I’m not gonna say who did because I don’t want anyone going after them but they have given me permission to talk about this.
I’m also not going to be linking to this pdf, because tbh I don’t know if that is legal and I’m not taking that chance… but I believe you can find it if you look for it. (For legal reasons this is a joke)
Here are some things that I feel are important takes from this interview
The 2019 Pilot:
Becky Sloan states that Clayhill was “a bit South Park”
Baker Terry adds that they made an attempt to get an element of current affairs, but he whispers it “because it almost sounds like a dirty phrase”
They felt the timelessness and claustrophobia of the originals were missing
So, I guess this means that nearly everything in “The Key to The City” is not going to be present in the tv show, which is a bit sad but I guess is understandable.
They also did not mention if they were ever going to officially release the pilot so we are still on that can of duck organs 🙃
Alright, this next bit is gonna get into the tv show so you have been warned, it does get a little… interesting to say the least.
The TV Show
They wrote this during the pandemic (obviously), over zoom and they felt that is may have helped recapture the oppressive vibe they felt was missing from the Pilot, Joseph states that it was strange writing a show about characters stuck inside while they were also stuck inside, “so maybe there are points where we did actually go insane”
This interview states that Baker does “About 80%” of the voices, and yeah that adds up
Jamie Demetriou, Lolly Adefope and Phil Wang have come on board to voice new characters
Sam Campbell and Natasha Hodgson have joined as writers
Megan Ganz is the story editor
Lolly Adefope is playing an intercom (An intercom character or a character that just so happens to be using the intercom???) and singing a “vocoder-packed pop number about workplace stress management”
Terry says that they have spent their whole adult lives doing this (also adds up)
Just the sentence, “On TV, the homemade ethos remains - which will please fans who have been patiently waiting six years for it to appear.”
Hugo Donkin makes a brief cameo appearance in this interview along with Charlie Perkins
Apparently they went ham on the props, there’s a background prop of a travel pamphlet and inside are felt pictures of holiday locations and that’s actually kinda cute
The trio share a comically large wallet that’s only shown for a second, Joe says there’s gonna be a number and date on the credit card “that no one will notice”
“Everyone’s gone insane of set” -Joseph Pelling
There is a stop-motion area on set where they are working with clay (LETS GOOOO)
… the urinals… are gonna have eyes… and limbs… the urinals are alive and I don’t know how to feel about that tbh…
The prop making area has also been dubbed “The Puppet Hospital”
There’s gonna be a vending machine full of cigarettes and bottles of “Mysterious dark liquid”
Also a robot dog! Hopefully it is wholesome and not bad at all
there is a quiet dark stage dubbed “The Void”
Red and Duck are going to be confused and try to make out felt objects “Through the encroaching gloom”
Josh Elwell is Duck’s Puppeteer and contorted themselves on the floor behind a felt fridge to get out of shot!
Perkins says that bringing in professional puppeteers has added, “so much personality and emotion”
Becky says there’s gonna be scenes with Yellow Guy where the people might cry (what is this a call out post??)
They actually had to stop using real meat for this show and had to use silicon replicas because there was an incident where they used actual beef to fill a “horrible vending machine” and it apparently smelled so bad that crew decided to switch to fakes
Terry’s favorite dhmis theory involves Bosnian Serb war criminal Radovan Karadžić
Becky’s is a huge fan of the “conspiracy-level scrutiny they have attracted”
There is a mention of the Ed Tucker Duck Tree anagram
“They refuse the debunk any of the theories”
The trio says they put a ton of Easter eggs in this show because they know the audience has the appetite for “dissecting things” (yet another callout post)
There is a life-size felt car sitting on stilts, Becky said that the crew dumped the car “in hope that the show’s supersleuths might one day discover its location” (CIPHER HUNT 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO)
You’ll apparently have to swim through a swamp to get to the car, but Becky says that people can find it
Joe says that they had to give the characters little desires to fit with the runtime of a tv show, even it the desire was “I don’t want to be in this room anymore”
All the props and puppets are in storage, but the trio hope to exhibit them one day
“At some point, we’ll have built everything in the world out of felt,” says Pelling. Sloan pipes up: “No one can stop us!”
And that’s all I can think of right now, I took me an hour to write this and it’s now 2 am I’m going to bed
