Hi! First off, thank you for the illuminating post on representation and responsible worldbuilding! You can absolutely shut me down if you've answered this before or feel like you shouldn't have to educate people (which is well within your right), but do you have any tips for where to start researching/what to avoid when writing Tibetan characters? Thank you for your time, regardless!
Hi I’m late getting to this ask but when it comes down to representation of a race or culture you are not from, dedication to research and uplifting the voices of the people you are attempting to portray. I usually start research by looking at University syllabi for a course on the subject I am interested in, since professors will know best what key texts will be essential for understanding a culture. Here is Amherst and Columbia’s for Tibetan Studies (There’s both modern and historical references). But, for example if you are just creating one character of Tibetan descent (this applies to any poc tbh) who lives in your country and their culture is not related to your main story, it is probably best for you not to delve too much into things like culture and religion if you are unfamiliar with it.
I got a lot of similar asks about an example of accurate and respectful depictions of Tibet in fiction and I just read one so I’m going to share it with you guys here: Tenju No Kuni or Blissful Land by Izumi Ichimon
It’s a historical slice of life romance that takes place in 18th century Tibet. Its almost scarily accurate in terms of lifestyle of the time period, language, culture, food, and the smallest of details. There are even sidenotes where the author goes into even further detail about our various customs when it's not related to the story.
I can guarantee Blissful Land’s accuracy and I really respect and appreciate the time and effort it must have taken for Ichimon Izumi to gather this information for the enjoyment and education of his readers. I think its a good example to look to if you are interested in Tibet in fiction!
