Editor’s Note: We recently heard from Dennis Kazmerowski, who has decided to resurrect a never-finished fiberglass body based on Strother MacMinn’s concept for an American coupe to compete at Le Mans. He’s making headway and wanted to share with us exactly how he got started with the project in the first place.] It started in August 2021, still in COVID-19 lockdown with much time to think about…

The restoration of the 1958 LeMans Coupe, originally designed by Strother MacMinn, is making great progress. Owner and friend Dennis Kazmerowski sent along these photos of the car in a beautiful black cherry metallic paint. It looks incredible and hasn’t even been buffed out yet! The paint work has been done at Billy Bob’s Corvettes in Jackson, NJ. Dennis took this project on with the car as a basic shell and has done an outstanding job reviving it from the brink. The completed LeMans Coupe will likely debut at a major Concours in the near future. Stay tuned! . . . . #undiscoveredclassics #forgottenfiberglass #fiberglasscar #fiberglass #handbuilt #sportscar #sportscars #americansportscar #restoration #restorationproject #restorationcars #carrestoration #classiccar #classiccars #cars #carsofinstagram #carswithoutlimits #vintagecars #customcars #carchaeology #lemans #lemanscoupe #strothermacminn #victress #johnbond #roadandtrack #macminn (at Jackson, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp0HZ3frGnD/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It took Renault more than a decade to come up with an answer to Citroën’s 2CV, and today’s sketches, drawn by design legend Strother MacMinn, show part of that process. These previews, drawn in the late summer of 1958, show a lower, squatter, and more ornate version of what ultimately became the #Renault4. The 4 was as simple and tough as the 2CV, but more practical, and it went on to become one of the best selling cars of all time. More than eight million of them were made from the summer of 1961 to the autumn of 1994, when the last one rolled off a distant assembly line in Slovenia. First, let’s introduce MacMinn. “Mac” may not have designed many cars himself, but he was instrumental in teaching dozens, perhaps hundreds, of influential designers. He was born in California in 1919 and met designer Frank Hershey quite by chance when Hershey worked for Murphy, the famous LA Coachbuilder. After graduating from High School, Hershey introduced him to Harley Earl, who hired him on the spot and sent the pair to Germany to redesign the Opel line. His first complete design was the 1938 Opel Kapitän. He returned only briefly to GM after the war, instead working briefly at Hudson and then teaching at the @artcenteredu from 1948 and working as a general industrial designer. MacMinn was in a position to drop in on design centers and talk with lots of designers, which is how he got access to Renault’s team about two years after CEO Pierre Dreyfus commissioned his staff to design a 2CV fighter. The Renault borrowed many ideas from the Citroën, like its front-drive setup (a first for Renault) but used a beefier water cooled engine (derived from the 4CV) for more useful power and a more utilitarian hatchback body, though both would be produced as truckettes. When MacMinn saw the project, it was still called the Renault 3CV, slotting below the existing 4CV. When the R4 arrived in 1961, it was simpler than these sketches, but not fundamentally different, and accompanied by the original vision, the humbler 603-cc R3 with blanked out quarter windows and a simpler interior. Most buyers preferred the slightly nicer 747-cc R4, and the 3 lasted just two seasons.  https://www.instagram.com/p/CLuf2GGFSr7/?igshid=1wc1qgc4qg61t

1937 Alfa Romeo 4C Wins Best of Show at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
An exquisite 1937 Alfa Romeo 4C 2900B Touring Berlinetta took home the Best of Show prize at the 2018 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The deep blue Alfa Romeo won its class before competing for Best of Show and also picked up this year’s Charles A. Chayne Trophy—plus, it was named the J. B. & Dorothy Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car.
“As a Zagato collector, I broke the rules and bought a Touring-bodied car because this Alfa Romeo is very special,” said owner David Sydorick of Beverly Hills, California, in a statement. “It is a piece of automotive architecture mounted on a Grand Prix chassis that has technology that was top of the line for prewar cars. It’s a wonderful combination. It’s beautiful from top to bottom.”
The polished prizewinner competed against over 200 cars from 17 countries and 31 states on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The concours is not a contest of speed, but instead one of elegance, just as it has been since its inception in 1950.
“This Alfa Romeo 8C 2.9 has all that one would wish for in a car—speed, style, and, frankly, sex appeal,” said  Sandra Button, Concours chairman, in a release. “The Touring styling is simply magical, and to top it off it makes all the right noises!”
Honorable mentions include a 1929 Duesenberg J Murphy Town Limousine owned by the Lehrman Collection of Palm Beach, Florida, and a 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Figoni Fastback Coupé owned by Robert Kudela of Chropyně, Czech Republic.
This year’s Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance also raised $1.8 million for charity that will benefit over 80 local Monterey county charities.
The 69th Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance returns to the third Sunday of August next year—so be sure to mark your calendars for August 18, 2019.

Here’s the next American Special we’re highlighting that will be at the 2023 Amelia Island Concours in our own class of 9 cars, the 1955 Bosley GT Mark I. Recognized as one of the finest hand-crafted specials built in the 1950s, the Bosley GT Mark I has wowed crowds around the world since it was first introduced via @roadandtrack magazine to the public in 1955.   Richard Bosley, a horticulturist from Mentor, Ohio had never built a hot rod or car of any sort. In 1952 when he was 21 years old, he decided he wanted to build his dream car that would surpass anything on the market at the time. Len Frank, writing in Road & Track magazine, said that when he first saw the article in 1955, that the Bosley was the most exciting, gorgeously proportioned shape he had ever seen.   Strother Macminn who was director of the Transportation Department of Pasadena Art Center of Design, stated that the Bosley changed the thinking of his students at that time. They had previously been influenced by European designers of the day. Bosley went sailing past their self-imposed limitations. Powered by the revered Chrysler Hemi engine, the low slung, fiberglass Bosley had an advertised top speed of more than 160 miles per hour.  Intended as a dual purpose sports and racing car, the Bosley had a 55 gallon gas tank which made it ideal for long distance races.   Ohio based creator Richard Bosley found it difficult to secure funding to produce his car in quantity. Built at a cost of over $9000, this prototype remains the only Bosley GT Mark I ever produced. . . . . #undiscoveredclassics #forgottenfiberglass #fiberglasscar #fiberglass #handbuilt #sportscar #sportscars #americansportscar #restoration #restorationproject #restorationcars #carrestoration #classiccar #classiccars #cars #carsofinstagram #carswithoutlimits #vintagecars #customcars #carcheology #theamelia #bosleygt #bosley #richardbosley #strothermacminn (at Tampa, Florida) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmtnjEGrY_i/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
