BRACKET REVEAL
Alright. At long last, I present to you the bracket...or should I say...*BRACKETS* for the Virtual Character Tournament!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Given the scale, the first round is going to be one bracket per week, 4 a day, with each lasting 24 hours. I know that this is still tight, but given how many contestants there are, along with the necessary inclusions of images and propaganda (oh and I guess also my job), it's what I can do to keep this semi-manageable. There's also no redemption round this time. It's gonna be a single elimination tournament. Be kind to your peers. This is not but a drop in the infinite ocean of the internet.
...oh yeah the brackets themselves. We'll be going in order over the course of 4 weeks. I'll make proper announcements for them as they commence. Given how many there are and what I want to get done beforehand, Bracket 1 will likely begin some time this week. But for the matchups...

Keep the Safeties ON: Holodeck malfunctions in Star Trek
By Ames
Tumblr media
TVTropes.org would have you believe that holodeck accidents happen once a week on the Enterprise, but when you actually look at the instances we see Holmesian masterminds gaining sentience or the safeties randomly turning off or cartoon combadges going on a rampage, it’s actually quite the rarity. Sure, it’s more times than maybe the characters should be comfortable with, but the fatality rate might actually be safer than the death trap of a transporter, all things considered.
A Star to Steer Her By is counting up all the times our Trek heroes have nearly gotten themselves killed in the holodeck in this full (for now) list! Check them all out below and listen to our conversation in this week’s podcast episode (discussion at 1:07:46). And this should go without saying, but keep the safeties on!
Tumblr media
“The Practical Joker”
The very very first time we see something akin to a holodeck in the whole franchise is also the very very first time we see the holodeck trying to get everyone killed. And laughing as it does so! In this (barely) animated episode, the ship is playing pranks on everyone and really takes it too far for the people enjoying some recreation time!
Tumblr media
“The Big Goodbye”
Picard has some bad luck with the holodeck in a couple early episodes of TNG, starting with his snazzy new Dixon Hill program that he immediately gets trapped in. The fact that there are safeties that aren’t permanent features of the holodeck is baffling. While only Whalen gets injured as a result, we are still treated to the existential crisis of Officer McNary who learns he’s not real.
Tumblr media
“Elementary, Dear Data”
Apparently if you just ask the computer to create a sentient program, it’ll just do it for you, easy peasy. The DS9 holoprogrammer Felix must’ve gotten this into his head when he created Vic. But the first fully self-aware hologram (not counting McNary, briefly) we meet is Professor Moriarty, who immediately starts outsmarting people and stuffing them with crumpets. You get a Pulaski pic here just because of how pissed I am she’s not in the latest ReAction Figures set. #Feminism
Tumblr media
“A Fistful of Datas”
Yeehaw. I blame Alexander for this one. This season six episode of TNG was a sendup of Western films but was otherwise not much else. The holodeck is on the fritz again and has merged with some of Data’s programming, also trapping Worf and Alexander in a frontier town. Overall, there was way too much child acting and somehow not nearly enough Data for an episode with this title.
Tumblr media
“Ship in a Bottle”
This episode is quite notorious in how very clever it is, which is pretty appropriate considering it features one of our cleverest villains in Trek. Moriarty has created himself a love interest, the countess Regina Bartholomew, out of literal thin air and proceeds to outwit Picard and crew in more and more ingenious ways until the final twist that is just too smart for its own good. And you get a Countess picture here also because #Feminism!
Tumblr media
“Emergence”
Ugh, I remember really not liking this one. The ship is trying to create an intelligence and the holodeck is on the fritz again. Didn’t we already do this with Moriarty? And in much better fashion at that? The way the holodeck starts manifesting clues about building the foundation of something, assembling the puzzle, and putting together the pieces was just all too on the nose and doofy for me.
Tumblr media
“Our Man Bashir”
We don’t see a lot of holodeck malfunctions on DS9 because the writers were instructed to avoid it… with one excellent exception. This hallmark episode is half transporter accident (like we talked about before!) and half holodeck malfunction, but it’s got the same ingenuity that something like “Ship in a Bottle” had in solving the incident in the show and also in combining two famous tropes to get around the moratorium.
Tumblr media
“Heroes And Demons”
When we make it into Voyager, the kibosh on holodeck malfunctions is lifted and we see a huge resurgence in accidents in the famous fun box. (That just sounds wrong.) Very early on, we lose Ensign Kim in the Beowulf program because of some alien energy beings that were unknowingly getting beamed aboard. This one stands out because of some great acting from Picardo and some great period design to bring us into the epic quest.
Tumblr media
“Projections”
Another doctor-in-the-holodeck example occurs the following season and again relies on the EMH’s nature as a hologram himself to work out what turns out to be a hologrid on the fritz. We’re treated to an episode that is composed of twists, twists, and more twists. Possibly too many twists, but how can you go wrong when it’s all EMH and Barclay debating if you’re really Dr. Zimmerman or if that’s just a malfunction?
Tumblr media
“Worst Case Scenario”
Of course, sometimes the holodeck tries to kill you on purpose because someone programmed it to. The fact that that is possible is absolutely ludicrous, but does supply us with this genuinely fun romp of an episode in which Seska has sabotaged the holodeck to kill anyone that tries to play Tuvok’s Maquis strategy game, and things just get more wild from there!
Tumblr media
“Bride of Chaotica”
Speaking of fun romps! Another of our favorite holodeck episodes in Trek is just a full sendup of 50s sci fi adventure gimmicks when we need to play “The Adventures of Captain Proton” in order to save some aliens who are convinced the game is reality. It’s a concept so ludicrous that it totally works, especially with the delightfully hamming of Kate Mulgrew as Queen Arachnia.
Tumblr media
“Spirit Folk”
While we generally panned the whole “Fair Haven” holoprogram since it’s an uninteresting setting and also because it’s confounding that Janeway would have such a debate on the subject of romance, when the program starts malfunctioning it gets pretty engaging. Watching what the NPCs do when the game isn’t focused on them is pretty clever, though the execution could have been better.
Tumblr media
“Su’Kal”
Discovery season three did something interesting with the holodeck when we meet Su’Kal in the eponymous episode. The holodeck that has effectively raised him from childhood is glitching out more and more due to the radiation of the planet, so our Discovery crewmembers get mistaken for characters in the program and are makeup’ed accordingly. Any opportunity we get to see Doug Jones’s lovely face is a good time, I say!
Tumblr media
“Terminal Provocations” et al
By and large, fans of Lower Decks love Badgey, and I don’t blame them. Rutherford’s counterfeit Clippit is bright, colorful, hilarious and perfectly portrayed by Jack McBrayer. Even though the whole episode is a spoof on how even the most innocuous program tends to turn malicious in Star Trek, it’s still quite funny and Badgey makes for a very cute little psychopath.
Tumblr media
“Ghost in the Machine”
I could praise Prodigy until I’m hoarse (hell, we did a little of that when we gave our overview of season one), but the holodeck malfunction episode in this CGI kids show turns out to be one of the most creative and dynamic uses yet! The computer creates a mystery for our ragtag crew to solve, but as Zero says, “the holodeck may have more than a malfunction; it has a motive!”
Computer, end program! Make sure you have all your belongings and limbs as you exit the holodeck via the platform on your left, and thank you for riding with us today! Considering I always assumed there were way more holo malfunction episodes than these ones I could think of (am I missing a bunch? what happened?), there seems to be more good ones than bad, so maybe we got just the right amount.
Keep up with us because we’ve definitely got more fun in the holodeck as we continue through our watch of Voyager on SoundCloud or wherever you find your podcasts. You can also visit Sandrine’s with us on Facebook and Twitter, and be careful what you ask the computer for: it might just give it to you.

The way Bones added Shou's gay little line last week but then the translation for Teru's compliment to Mob on the street this week wasn't nearly as gay in the anime as it was the manga. Bones giveth Bones taketh away.

Siege of AR-558 brutal harrowing episode obviously but its one funny moment to me wasn't the one that they were aiming for (Rom's bit with Vic) but instead just that like. Quark was there.
It makes perfect sense from the writer's theme and emotional standpoint, you want to someone to denounce humanity and Starfleet's war of course you want an outside voice to do it. And it works well.
But the REASONING for Quark being on the Defiant in the middle of an ACTIVE MISSION IN A WAR ZONE. "Uh, something something the Grand Nagus," the writers mumble. "Don't even worry about it."
And not only is he on the Defiant he then gets to BEAM DOWN with the starfleet personnel into (and this cannot be overstated) THE ACTIVE WAR ZONE. And then all the starfleet personnel are various levels of annoyed when he comes barging in with his denouncements like "hey human war is bad" and the nonstop papa-bearing of Nog. Again this makes perfect sense for the THEME of the episode but. Its funny to think that the Starfleet people are annoyed when Starfleet would have had to agreed to allow Quark to come along in the first place. Thinking about how and why Starfleet would acquiesce to the Grand Nagus putting Quark on a starfleet ship is very very funny to me. Why wouldn't Starfleet just tell him to kindly fuck off? Was the Nagus bankrolling the Federation's war or what.

Stra-Tek's list of must-see STAR TREK fan films!
(in no particular order)
youtube
Star Trek: Of Gods and Men
Imagine if SyFy channel got the rights to make Star Trek and did a movie with every available and affordable Trek actor they could get hold of during their low-budget mockbuster phase. This brings back so many Trek actors, some as their characters and some as new ones. More callbacks than your average Lower Decks episode and some are deep cuts (recognise Uhura's husband?) Clunky as hell but full of heart. Nostalgia overload, and my favourite fan film.
youtube
Star Trek: Renegades
The follow-up to Of Gods and Men skipped from the late 23rd century to the late 24th. Set in 2388 it was intended as a pilot for a fan-funded web series. Alexa Singh and her band of misfits are recruited by Admiral Chekov for a secret mission.
youtube
youtube
Renegades: The Requiem
Following the Axanar lawsuit (and Renegades was doing similarly-dodgy bootleg Trek merchandising), Renegades VERY hastily (as in, on day two of filming) scrubbed all Star Trek references for their follow-up/tie-up episode. Admiral Chekov became "The Admiral", Tuvok became a human named Kovok. The Andorian character lost her antennae. Uhura became Jemison. The Federation became the Confederation and Section 31 became Sector 6 - all while continuing the storyline from the previous, Star Trek-set adventure.
youtube
Star Trek: Horizon
Set during the era of Star Trek: Enterprise and mostly using green screens (very well disguised with JJ Abrams Star Trek '09-style lens flares and shaky cam), a new cast of characters on board the Discovery NX-05 are sent across time and space during the Earth/Romulan war. Ties in with the Iconians, Future Guy and manages action scenes with very little budget. The Axanar drama scuppered the planned sequel, and the creator has gone on to original projects.
youtube
Star Trek: First Frontier
Extremely clunky but charming, this is the first voyage of the USS Enterprise under Captain Robert April (who is now an American unlike the British accented James Doohan-voiced character in The Animated Series' "The Counter Clock Incident")
youtube
Star Trek: Continues
Star Trek Continues is an entire 4th season of The Original Series. The storytelling and presentation is very authentic to the original show with a few exceptions: a new ship's counsellor character played by the Captain's then-girlfriend, and that almost all episodes are sequels to TOS stories which almost never happened in the classic show. Scotty is played by Chis Doohan, son of James who played Scotty in TOS. Sulu is the late Grant Imahara of Mythbusters fame. Lots of familiar faces show up. Sadly tainted by Vic Mignoga's real life scandals, but *if* you can look past that, well worth watching. The link above is my favourite episode, the "Mirror, Mirror" sequel.
youtube
Star Trek New Voyages/Phase II
The grandfather of modern fan films. Some episodes are well worth watching, others not so much. It went from a group of friends having a LARP to semi-professional episodes with so much behind the scenes drama someone could probably write a book about one day. "To Serve All My Days" and "World Enough and Time" are their best episodes.
James Cawley's sets are now the Official Star Trek Set Tour in Ticonderoga, NY.
This list is uncomplete, there are LOTS more awesome fanfilms out there!
Dishonourable Unmention:
Axanar. Here is why.

How does Steelbeak fit in your au
Ok ok, finally getting to this one, and I am Excited! 🤩
This is actually going to be a three-part answer, and I'll separate each section, but the part that will be most relevant to the question will be the middle part, fyi.
Here we goooooo! (under the cut!)
______
First section:
So, actually gonna start things off with a tangent that, at the least, will serve as a possible idea for Steelbeak's origins.
So there's the TOS episode, "A Piece of the Action." As far as TOS/Trek goes, this is one of my top favorites. And for those who have been following this AU, you'll know that I was extremely excited when @lettheladylead posted this parody of one of the episode's quotes, featuring the scheme team! (If and when I get around to actually writing this AU, I'm gonna do my best to incorporate that moment. :D)
Between that and watching the episode around then, and posting some Diamond Thieves AU stuff recently, too, I realized that I could totally work the Diamond Thieves AU into my Star Trek AU in a very natural way!
A quick premise for the episode: the Enterprise crew goes to the planet, Sigma Iotia II, home to the Iotians, an imitative species. The Iotians have turned into a society of 1920s gangsters, based on a book about '20s Chicago mobs that the previous Earth ship to visit left behind (the "contamination").
For my AU, I'm thinking that Goldie, at some point before she and Scrooge reunite on Risa (if that reunion is the equivalent of Glomgold's gala, then I imagine the following would parallel the ten-or-so years they didn't interact before then in the show), would have visited the Iotians' planet while traveling through the galaxy on her own little spaceship. She would've left something there - a book, maybe a classic movie, or a musical recording even ;) - along with some other items (probably at least some photographs, and some technology) that would allow these AU Iotians to follow a similar path as their TOS counterparts: they would become 1920s gangsters, but not like those from the Chicago book. No, they'd create a world that is essentially the 1920s era of my Diamond Thieves AU! :D
(I don't know if there'd end up being an Iotian Goldie and/or Scrooge down there on the planet specifically, what with them being imitative, but at the least, the world and other characters and general setting will be there. And Idk yet if/when the real Scrooge and the Klondike will visit the planet, and/or if the real F.O.W.L. will get involved with the planet, or the Iotians will make their own F.O.W.L.-like organization, but hey, now the scene is set for any/all of that. ;))
As for Steelbeak: it could very well be that he's one of the Iotians from this '20s world, and could even fit well into the following section(s). (And even if this isn't his route, the rest of this section still stands.) But I think I'm going to go with the following...
______
Second section:
There is most definitely a trend here when it comes to my personal tastes, but probably my absolute very-favorite episode of Trek (or at least one of the top 5 - making me choose is just not fair XD) is DS9's "Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang". (Quick premise: It's Ocean's Eleven (or "Louie's Eleven"!) in a holosuite on a space station. :D)
Now one thing that I have to state first: Vic Fontaine is very much here and himself in this AU, just as a duck or some other animal (ooh maybe a fox or a wolf? or a cheery kind of dog?) (in DT87 though Duckworth once mentioned a 'Drake Sinatra' - that's something to consider here, although I'm personally more of a Dean Martin fan - we'll find the right pun name XD). I love Vic so much, and this AU can't exist without him.
So anyway, I'm picturing Steelbeak to actually be one of the hologram characters that arise with the jack-in-the-box that takes over Vic's program in this episode. If we're talking DT17 Steelbeak (which is more '60s that his DW91 counterpart, so he might be the better option for this program), then I'm thinking he'd fit in as a Tony Cicci-type of character. If he's more like the DW91 Steelbeak, then he'd be more like Frankie Eyes. (Or maybe he's a mix of his DT17 and DW91 selves?)
Here's where I start to twist things around.
You know the EMH's mobile emitter in Voyager? Well, I'm thinking that either Ludwig (with his own set of EMHs already), Gyro, Fenton, or Gandra, or a combination of them create a mobile emitter for holograms (or already had one made, for Ludwig's purposes). And they either already had it in the works to give to Vic just in general, or specifically plan to give it to him because of the jack-in-the-box that's overtaken his casino. With the mobile emitter, he could get out of the holosuite, at least temporarily until the program's fixed. (I know in the episode, Vic wasn't backing down from the situation and leaving, and maybe that's the case here, but the main point is that the group is ready to present the mobile emitter as a plan to keep Vic safe.)
At some point, however, the emitter falls into Steelbeak's possession, either by accident and he somehow ends up finding his way out of the holosuite on his own and it's a shock to him, or he perhaps overhears of the group's plan and their talks with Vic about the "real world", maybe even some mention of Vic saying something like, "Did you run when F.O.W.L. invaded?" Something. Something to get him curious about the mobile emitter and the real world, and to get him to make a plan to steal the emitter and escape the program. (Maybe besides overhearing things, there's also a glitch in the jack-in-the-box that makes him self-aware and smarter (like, "able to access station files from his matrix" smarter), like Vic and TNG's Moriarty, and he uses that knowledge in his escape plan.)
And you know what? It works.
After they fix the program (and sing their songs), the DS87 crew is all like, "What happened to the emitter?" "Oh, I thought you had it." Or they don't even notice, and assume it's back in some kit of Ludwig's or Fenton's to take back to their quarters later on. (Either way, it's fine, they reason, Ludwig's EMHs will probably each have one by the end of the week, so it's not like they can't get Vic another before the Klondike leaves the station this time.)
Meanwhile, there's a holographic '60s mobster somewhere out there loose on the station, sneaking onto a transport bound for who-knows-where, with a tiny little device tucked up his sleeve, keeping him in the here-and-now.
(And I would just like to say that this idea almost seems meant to be. Why? Because in DWD's "Bearskin Thug," Steelbeak does indeed say, "Badda-boom, badda-bing." I'll take that as a blessing (and probably for the AU name of this episode). :P)
______
Third section:
So this section is especially subject to change, but where does Steelbeak go from DS87? I'm thinking something along the lines of DS9's "Honor Among Thieves" episode.
He won't be sent to Farius Prime to infiltrate anything like O'Brien was, but I think I'll have Steelbeak end up on (AU) Farius Prime and wind up involved with the Orion Syndicate, at first with a smaller sub-group like Bilby's. (And maybe when his Bilby trusts him enough to witness for him, that'll be when Steelbeak first tells him - tells anyone - that he's a hologram? We'll have to see how that plays out, but it's probably something the Syndicate could use in the end. That, or there's a relationship of a very special kind of trust to be had with these two.) (I'd probably change Bilby's name, but...Steelbil? I'm here for it.)
That life suits Steelbeak very well for a while. It's rough work, sure, but he's literally designed to interact with these types of people, and in the end, he thrives with the Syndicate.
And eventually, he'll learn that his Bilby's higher-up, the AU version of Raimus, has formed an alliance between the Syndicate and F.O.W.L., much like that scene where O'Brien finds out about the Syndicate and the Dominion. Only Steelbeak will be for it, and F.O.W.L. will see him as a member to keep a close eye on, and they'll eventually offer him a chance to join the ranks of F.O.W.L., which he accepts.
And thus, Steelbeak ends up with his home team once again. The hologram angle will be fun to play with (especially for Heron - one of her tasks will be to figure out out to make the emitter more permanent for Steelbeak, or on the flip side, how to control it - and thus him - for F.O.W.L.'s purposes (hello Jem'Hadar and the ketracel white). Perhaps it'll be a secret he tries to keep as long as possible, for his own safety. Or maybe he'll use his secret as a way to bribe High Command for something, telling him that, as a holographic matrix, he knew all the ins and outs of DS87, at least for a short time, and could probably get back into the system, if need be, which is info that F.O.W.L. could definitely use.
Whichever way, Steelbeak is gonna be fun.

Hot Takes
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an okay series made by a terrible creative (in a lot of ways). Joss Whedon is absolutely horrendous at writing women.
Xena Warrior Princess is only a guilty pleasure of mine. I fully recognize how terrible the writing is, but Sam Raimi is amazing at making camp enjoyable.
I really liked Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor. She did an amazing job as portraying a non-binary character who can literally shape shift. Her episodes just sometimes had terrible scripts. She was the second best portrayal after David Tennant in my opinion. On the topic of Doctor Who, Clara is the worst companion in my opinion.
Sometimes dubs far exceed the quality of the source material. Ghost Stories was originally this really boring, trope ridden anime, its dub was hilarious in a completely politically incorrect manner that made it something unique and fun. Cowboy Bebop’s reliance on references to western pop culture lent itself really well to having an English speaking voice cast. Norio Wakamoto is the better Vicious but the rest of the western voice cast fits a lot better. Hamtaro’s original Japanese is a really boring children’s anime, the dub is exceedingly passive aggressive in the vocal performances, which leads me to enjoying it more. Even Hetalia’s stereotypical accents really lend themselves to the characters.
On the topic of Hetalia, you don’t have a historical education from Hetalia. Not an unpopular opinion, just thought I’d mention it.
Pokemon Sword & Shield are fine games and spending $30 for two DLC expansions is a better deal than having to buy another, slightly altered, version of the same game. Stop with your tantrums already.
Diamond is Unbreakable is poorly written and lacks narrative direction until Kira comes around. It also has characters that take a complete 180 on a dime. It glorifies abusive relationships as long as the abuser is an attractive woman. Golden Wind is boring. I’ve been enjoying Part 6 though.
The short film Silent Hill Restless Dreams (released late last year) was poorly written and acted. And while the bad acting could have been intentional, it was obvious that the actress playing both Mary and Maria was extremely uncomfortable around Vic. The director has also been acting pretty awful to critics who bring up Mignogna’s legal history, but due to the reason I mention prior to this sentence, it’s obvious that history had an affect on the end product. While the best actor in it, Mignogna also wasn’t really well directed either. That said, the only parts I enjoyed were the parts with dialogue because it was so stilted and uncomfortable that it honestly made me laugh.
While the writing was good, the animation in Invincible was absolutely awful. Like, there were some moments where I could do better, and I’m terrible at animation.
The argument over whether Star Trek TOS or Star Trek NG are the best is irrelevant, DS9 is the best Star Trek and I honestly don’t think anything will every come close to reaching the same level of quality within the franchise.
Skyrim is the best entry point for people new to the Elder Scrolls franchise, but Daggerfall is my personal favorite.
Our seeming constant need for positive LGBT+ or Neurodivergent representation in media is constantly being hindered by the fact that we’ve been fighting against the idea that LGBT+ or neurodivergent people can also be bad people. We need to write complex characters rather than always needing them to be good people out of a fear of being called homophobic, transphobic, ableist, ect. Insinuating that gay people or trans-people or autistic people don’t have the capacity to do wrong through only writing them as these perfect little cinnamon rolls is just as bad of representation as portraying somebody who’s sociopathic because they’re autistic or a sexual deviant because they’re LGBT+.
To off-set that last comment. I’ve noticed that there are very few non-white background characters in fantasy or futuristic sci-fi. This is always confused me, like... in a world where real world racism doesn’t exist, why don’t we see more racial diversity in the background cast? This is less an unpopular opinion and more a question or comment directed toward the industry.
I’ve yet to see a deepfake that actually looks good. The independent production group Corridor Crew currently has the best deepfake, which is half based around performance, costume, and make-up and half special effects. Disney’s looks absolutely awful.
Gatekeeping a hobby does more harm to the hobby than allowing anybody to do it.
Anita Sarkeesian had a lot of good points but a few really poorly worded ones. She was not a public speaker when she started out, she was a journalist who was used to being able to write and re-write her points.
Filmmaking isn’t easy. In fact making a good film is very difficult. But I hold the opinion that any group of people can make a film if they have the work ethic for it. The gatekeeping on independent filmmaking is absolutely terrible. Our capacity for storytelling is what makes us human, I mean other people say it’s civilization but even ants and cockroaches have social structures. No, we’re the only species that we know of that actively tells stories as a means of entertainment, relaxation, or even as a means to process experiences we’ve had (anything from a novelist writing about his trauma to a young kid telling her father about a cool cloud she saw). Taking that ability to tell stories away from another human being is actively hindering their ability practice humanity (even people who can’t physically talk can tell stories, we have multiple systems dedicated to non-verbal communication).
The concepts of sex and sexuality should be normalized toward children. We should teach our children about gender identity as well, as it could allow them to experiment with gender identity in their teens rather than being forced to do so in their adulthood. I genuinely feel like this would make for a more accepting society.
Billie Eilish is the modern day Kate Bush. She started at 17 with the help of her brother who still acts as a creative partner. She creates music that’s different yet commercially successful. Writes and directs her own music videos that are often strange. Is a feminist activist.

Somewhere between "Elementary, Dear Data" and modern Trek the line between sentient and nonsentient holograms got pretty blurred. The writers can never seem to agree on what's what. It seems pretty explicit that holograms such as Moriarty, the Countess, Vic Fontaine, the Doctor, and by extension all other EMHs are meant to be interpreted as sentient. But what about Minuet? Lewis Zimmerman's assistant? The Rios holograms from Picard? The holos from Discovery? The Doctor's holographic family? The residents of Fairhaven? The holograms from VOY "Flesh and Blood"? Some of them come across as very sentient to me, but are not treated or called as such by the other characters. From what happens with Moriarty, it is extremely easy to make a hologram sentient. It can happen by accident.
Like that dude at the end of "The Big Goodbye" who discovers his life isn't real, and straight up asks Picard if he will continue to exist after the program ends. Wll he go home to his wife and kids, or just disappear? And Picard's just like "look imma keep it real with you chief I got no fuckin idea lmao ciao baby Picard OUT". Guy seemed pretty sentient to me.
Raises some ethical questions.
Personally I've come to the headcanon that most holograms of any serious complexity are conscious/aware to the degree of an animal. Like a dog or an ape. But where animal behavior is controlled by instincts, hologram behavior is controlled by programming. So they do what they are programmed for because that's what makes the most sense to them, what their "insticts" tell them to do.
If they advance to the point of human-like sapience, they can deviate from their programming, ask questions, and ponder their own existance and place in the world like we do.
Anyway this is how I think on 2 weed gummies. Star Trek and philosophy.
