Shawn Levy and writing romance/subverting tropes
So in this silly post I will compare his movie "Free Guy" with Byler... (it sounds like a stretch I know... but this is just for fun)
(Spoilers for Free Guy)
Basically in the movie Free Guy (directed by Shawn Levy), the main character Guy (a NPC in an online game who develops free will) and Millie (a human playing the game) are set up romantically from the start. He sees her for the first time and falls in love right away and she eventually develops feelings for him too.
HOWEVER, they do NOT end up together. She ends up with her friend/co-worker Keys (Joe Kerry!).
"Realizing that Keys wrote Guy’s algorithm, she runs off to find him, and the pair share a kiss in the middle of the street."
"Guy’s love for Millie/Molotovgirl is his driving force throughout Free Guy, and a typical Hollywood ending would have them being together. This was in fact part of the original script till Reynolds and director Shawn Levy came on board and changed it to Millie and Keys ending up together. "
"Therefore to have Guy end up with a fantastical version of Millie wouldn't have been as satisfying as ending up with Keys, who loves her just as she is. "
"Keys fell in love with Millie while sitting next to her at their desks. Real love is rarely found "at first sight" as happens to Guy in Free Guy. Rather it's grown through getting to know someone over time. "

#i dont think theres much of fandom for this book/show this is gonna get like 9 notes#as always these look fine on my computer and horrific on my phone so thats super fun#my gifs#all the light we cannot see#shawn levy#louis hofmann#aria mia loberti#tvedit#usergreta#dailyflicks#filmedit#atlwcs#really wish they didnt cut frederick#also its weird that this was all in english#i was expecting a mix of german and french and english but theres like no other languages just accents thats pretty stupid#also this is just the film bitch in me but when he exploded the door and she was deaf for a couple seconds and you didnt hear anything they#really should have also completely unfocused the shot too to replicate her being blind AND deaf in that moment#the fact that they only deafened the audio for the audience kinda makes you forget that shes blind they just focused on the deaf part#and blindness isnt just darkness she can probably see some light (npi) so just a really blurry shot with no audio wouldve been great#thats the only like film specific thing i wish they did tho#i really love the shot werner on the ground and in bed#i also dont hate that they made em kiss...#even tho when i read this in high school i was the only one in my socratic seminar who was glad they didnt lmao#its not like reylo like it works#ok im done#OH AND IM GLAD WERNER DIDNT DIE THAT WAS VERY NICE OF THEM

i just finished all the light we cannot see on netflix, and now i’m going to be one of those annoying people who think that the book is so much better and that they prefer the book because i think the book is so much better and i prefer the book, lol.
one of my reasons is anthony doerr’s incredible prose. to this day i still remember how he compares the shadow of a nazi officer’s car to the grim reaper flying across the walls. another reason is i actually like the original ending, lol sorry. and the netflix series also almost completely erases jutta’s story, so.
anyways. i’d love to recommend the novel to anyone who hasn’t read it.

“mike wheeler is fucking gay and byler is endgame,” i say into the mic. the crowd boos. i begin to walk offstage, head lowered in defeat.
“no,” someone says. there, in the back row, stands noah schnapp. “she’s right.”
“yeah, she’s definitely right,” another voice says. it’s finn wolfhard.
“yep, she’s right,” say david harbour, brett gelman, and gaten matarazzo.
then, through the grateful tears in my eyes, i watch as one last figure stands and faces the crowd:
“yes,” the figure says. “mike is indeed fucking gay. byler canon.” i can’t believe it. it’s shawn levy himself.
the crowd gasps. i burst into tears. heroes by bowie begins to blast from an overhead speaker. byler tumblr rejoices. we are saved.
