Metallic Bluish-Green Cuckoo Wasp (Chrysis angolensis)

Cool Facts- The metallic bluish-green cuckoo wasps have brilliant coloring that comes from tiny pits covering their exoskeleton, resulting in light bouncing off them to make them glittery. Named after the cuckoo bird, the cuckoo wasp is parasitic in their egg laying. Finding solitary bee or wasp nests, the metallic bluish-green cuckoo wasp lays her own eggs alongside the brood. The parasitic larva eats its host’s offspring and monopolizes food brought by its foster parent. When a cuckoo wasp is caught by a bee trying to lay its eggs, the bee goes on attack. The cuckoo wasp then curls into a ball to prevent it from being stung.

Description de toilettes (Bibliothèque Forney):

Robe en foulard blanc uni, ornée de trois rangées de passementerie jaune maïs, disposées en ondulations, retenues ou plutôt rapprochées de distance en distance par des médaillons également en passementerie. La dernière de ces rangées, celle qui se rapproche du bord inférieur, se termine par une frange de même teinte. Le corsage de la robe est décolleté, avec un revers formant berthe; il est à basque par derrière, et sur les côtés le revers se prolonge de façon à former une longue et large ceinture rejetée en arrière. Corsage montant, à manches longues, en mousseline bouillonnée; manches longues, ouvertes, pareilles à la robe.

Robe de dessous en tarlatane bleu vif, relevée de distance en distance sur son bord inférieur par de grosses roses, à feuillage brun. Robe de dessus en tarlatane blanche, à lés séparés, lisérés en taffetas blanc, et rapprochés de distance en distance par une grosse rose. Corselet bleu décolleté sur un corsage blanc décolleté; manches bleues courtes, manches blanches larges et ouvertes, ornées d'une grosse rose à leur extrémité.

Dress in plain white foulard, adorned with three rows of maize yellow trimmings, arranged in undulations, held back or rather brought together at intervals by medallions also in trimmings. The last of these rows, the one that comes closer to the bottom edge, ends in bangs of the same shade. The bodice of the dress is low-cut, with a lapel forming a berthe; it is basqued behind, and on the sides the lapel is prolonged so as to form a long and wide belt thrown back. High bodice, with long sleeves, in bubbled chiffon; long, open, dress-like sleeves.

Under dress in bright blue tarlatan, relieved from time to time on its lower edge by large roses, with brown foliage. Top dress in white tarlatan, with separate strips, trimmed in white taffeta, and brought together at intervals by a large rose. Low-cut blue corsage on a low-cut white bodice; short blue sleeves, wide and open white sleeves, adorned with a large rose at their end.
