Ok here's my official review of season: a letter to the future.
Play it
Play this fucking game. It's beautiful. The art is mind blowing, the voice acting is fantastic, the sound design is incredible, the themes and the writing are of award winning quality.
Also I am crying. It's up there with Gris as a short game about dealing with loss and growth with a contemplative style that I will replay on the regular I think.
playing a came called "season: a letter to the future" and i completely enjoy going around and finding things to take pictures of and record but unfortunately, the conceit of the game is that i am writing and recording things for posterity (hence "letter to the future") but there's only so much room in the book i'm writing in BUT i am a filthy completionist and i want EVERYTHING in that goddamn book so unfortunately to the people who find it in the future, all the pages look like this
are you a fan of cozy games? Games that have low stakes but promote creativity and philosophical thinking? Are you maybe a fan of Unpacking or similar chill games with a great message?
Then do I have the best game for you. Season: A Letter To The Future.
First up, this game is beautiful
The art style is so whimsical and calming but it's the sound design and narrative that really get ya
You're a photographer exploring a world different from our own, cataloguing the people you meet and experience you live through into a scrapbook that eventually ends up in a museum
You get to design each page based on what YOU as the player deem important enough to be your world's legacy - audio you record, photos you take, quotes you gather, it's all up to you!
You can take sides, make opinions and change the way the future views your present.
But mostly you just explore the world, meet people from all walks of life and catalogue the parts that resonate with you.
The voice acting is spectacular and this part I will carry with me forever:
how to leave home for my daughter:
find a sacred square of earth
lay down, so you have the dirt at your back
close your eyes
close everything
do you see for yourself?
you see for the dead, for the unborn
do you listen for yourself?
you listen for the dead, for the unborn
your ancestors are in that dirt
all the living and all the dead are holding you up.
now stand.
they're still there aren't they?
it's time to move, to entangle yourself everywhere with everyone
so the next time you lay down in the dirt
you will have so much more to tell them .
An amazing experience playing this game, playthrough is only a few hours - took me a week or so - but you will come out of it changed, with a new appreciation for life and the stories you carry.
