First lines of the Dao De Jing in the ancient Chinese Seal Script:
The Dao that can be trodden is not the enduring and unchanging Dao. The name that can be named is not the enduring and unchanging name. Having no name, it is the Originator of heaven and earth; having a name, it is the Mother of all things.

Ughh it's a little bit evil of me to spring seal script on you if we haven't covered any of the characters, buuuuut all three characters are pretty common jōyō kanji, so I think I'm just gonna do it anyway? At least I'll queue it; maybe by the time we get here, we'll have covered some of them!
Hint: While the sign in the background says it's an allergy research institutes, it also happens to be a natural foods store! Can you read it?
It says 自然食!
自然 (shizen) means nature or natural, and 食 (-shoku) means food or eat.
Let's start with 自, the only character I recognized at first sight. It means oneself, and it's commonly read ji or shi, and also mizuka.ra, ono.zukara, or ono.zuto.
Next is 然, which I did not recognize at all! Both 火 and 灬 are fire radicals, but it never occurred to me to interchange them!
Anyway, 然 is usually read zen and can also be nen, shika, shika.ri, shika.shi, or sa. It has a kind of nebulous meaning: in the manner of, sort of thing, so, etc.
食 was tough too. I could not see 良; I kept seeing 百 on top and 亡 on the bottom, and that is nothing. Knowing stroke order can often help you to decode older writing styles or difficult handwriting, but givthat was not the case for me here.
Anyway, 食 means food, and it can be read ku.u, ku.rau, ta.beru, ha.mu, shoku, or jiki.
Finally, a fun tip for those who made it this far: say you encounter an unusual calligraphy style and you think you recognize a kanji but aren't sure. Do an image search for "[kanji] + 書体" (shotai), meaning typeface or calligraphic style, and you'll find whole lists of the character written every way you can imagine! Compare and contrast til you figure it out. It's beautiful. Niche but beautiful.

Finally got around to carving a new 도장 for calligraphy and general art use. Had a piece of machine brass to use up and the set of push gravers I made a few weeks ago has been begging for a new project.

a piece i did for school recently, a transcription of a classic hokkien song into seal script (an archaic form of chinese script)
main text:
獨夜無伴守燈下 春風對面吹
十七八歲未出嫁 見著少年家
果然標致面肉白 誰家人子弟
想欲問伊驚歹勢 心內彈琵琶
transliteration (tâi-lô)
to̍k-iā bô phuānn siú-ting-ē; tshun-hong tuì-bīn tshue
tsa̍p-tshit-poeh huè buē tshut-kè; kìnn-tio̍h siàu-liân-ke
kó-jiân piau-tì bīn-bah-pe̍h; siâng ka-lâng tsú-tē
siūnn boeh mn̄g i kiann pháinn-sè; sim-lāi tuânn pî-pê
translation (by me):
a lonely night, companionless, under a dim lamp; a spring breeze blows the other way.
seventeen going on eighteen, and still unmarried; catching a glimpse of a suitor.
truly what a beauty, with a soft white face; from which family do they come from?
thinking of approaching, feeling shy; the strings of the heart are strumming.

Anyone on here happen to understand Chinese seal script? I’m designing some Power Rangers for a tabletop campaign and am having a hard time trying to decode it on my own.

@petricorah got an ask about betrothal swords and i just HAD to do a quick mock-up
betrothal necklaces and arm bands are OVER, this is the best idea ever!!
Zuko's swords:
The blades are also made of meteor now
"Never give up without a fight" which we see on Zuko's knife in the "Zuko Alone" episode translates to four characters. The first two are inscribed near the base of one of the swords in seal script, and the last two are likewise inscribed on the other sword
The lanyards on the handles are beaded braids of Sokka's hair because I'm still obsessed with hair and all the meanings it has in the Fire Nation
The scabbard is decorated with a combination of gold-carved meteor and dragon scales gifted to Aang by Ran and Shaw, which Aang gifted to Sokka to add to the sword.
The meteor has four detailed sections. The first section shows symbols of the Fire Nation, the second section shows symbols of the Water Tribe, the third section shows a new symbol that is a combination of Water and Fire. The fourth section is basically a stylized heart.
The details on the handles are carved so that one sword is Fire/sun themed and the other is Water/moon themed
Sokka's sword:
This is a simpler design, still made of meteor
A haiku Zuko wrote for Sokka is etched into the blade in gold seal script characters
The grip, as well as the majority of the scabbard are carved from a hybrid tree I've just invented called sakaki cedar because I love the symbolism
Other details are carved from bone, like the sun-themed guard and the moon-themed pommel.
Similar to Zuko's scabbard, Sokka's has four bone-carved sections. The top is a combination of sun and moon representing the union between Sokka and Zuko and their nations. The second is a Fire symbol, the third Water, and the fourth is a sort of yin-yang heart thing reminiscent of the fish in the Spirit Oasis in the North Pole.
The tassel/lanyard of the sword is also. Zuko's hair.

Doodles after learning the different meanings of different wax seals; according to this infographic using blue wax indicates romance or passion, the darker the blue, the stronger the feelings. Abram only has red wax (the default option) if any at all, but luckily he knows exactly who to ask when he finally learns there’s a separate proper way to seal certain sweet letters to his prince

The Four Encompassing Vows Masses of creatures, without bounds, I vow to save. Anxiety and hate, delusive desires inexhaustible, I vow to break. Dharma gates beyond measure, I vow to learn. Buddha’s Way, unsurpassable, I vow to accomplish.

Some deeply exciting seal script! And this is a full first and last name, which I would normally never post, but in this case, it's the sign outside a restaurant. I don't think I've ever seen a Japanese restaurant with a human first and last name before, but anyway, I LOVE the energy and maximalism of all this design. I only recognized one out of the four kanji though. How about you?

It was 阿部寿也! Read Abe Toshiya. The surname 阿部 (not to be confused with the former PM, whose name was written 安倍) can also be Abei, Abu, or Okabe, while 寿也 can also be Kazuya.
阿 is usually read ア but can also be おもね.る, くま, or オ. It can mean nook or recess, and the verb 阿る means to flatter, cater to, curry favor with, or fawn on. You might also see as an abbreviation referring to Africa (full ateji: 阿弗利加).
部 is read べ or ブ. It means part/portion, section (bureau, class, department), or copy, and it’s the counter for copies of printed material.
寿 is an auspicious character. It means congratulations, longevity, or one's natural life. It's read ことぶき, ことぶ.く, ことほ.ぐ, ジュ, ス (as in 寿司 sushi), or シュウ.
也 is the classical verb 'to be,' read なり. It can also be read か, また, ヤ, or エ. It's the source for the kana や and ヤ (and in Mandarin, it's read yě and it means too/also).
