U.S. Charges Poaching Ring Allegedly Involved in Massive Utah Dinosaur Bone Heist
After Being Excavated and Fashioned into Dinosaur Dig Kits, Carved Figurines, Jewelry, and More for Sale, "Tens of Thousands of Pounds of Dinosaur Bones have Lost Virtually all Scientific Value.”
— By Dina Fine Maron | October 19, 2023
Federal prosecutors today announced charges against four people allegedly involved in a massive dinosaur bone smuggling scheme. Thousands of pounds of dinosaurs and other fossils were secretly excavated from government lands in Utah, according to court documents. Some were sold at gem shows, and others were shipped to China after being mislabeled as construction materials or gems. The poaching and subterfuge, court documents allege, lasted at least from March 2018 to earlier this year.
“By removing and processing these dinosaur bones to make consumer products for profit, tens of thousands of pounds of dinosaur bones have lost virtually all scientific value, leaving future generations unable to experience the science and wonder of these bones,” United States Attorney Trina Higgins said in a press statement.
"It’s certainly a significant volume of dinosaur bones," says David Evans, a paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum who’s not involved in the case. He adds that it’s unusual for so much material to be removed from government lands, and that many people likely aren’t aware of the scale of the black market on U.S. dinosaur specimens.

Some of the dinosaur bones were fashioned into commercial products, including dinosaur dig kits, carved figurines, knives, jewelry, and polished bowling ball-like spheres, according to court documents.
Federal agents seized one shipment of dinosaur bones bound for China in December 2022 in Long Beach, California. The 17,000 pounds of fossil material had been mislabeled as industrial stone.

Before now, one of the biggest known dinosaur fossil busts occurred in 2006, when 8,000 pounds of fossils—including thousands of dinosaur eggs, petrified pine cones, and prehistoric crabs—were seized by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents at a gem and mineral show in Tucson, Arizona. Those items had been illegally taken from Argentina.
In Utah, dinosaur bones found on private lands may be legally excavated and sold, but it is a crime to dig up and sell fossils discovered on federal or state lands. Charges against the four Utah defendants, who are scheduled to have their initial court appearance later today in Salt Lake City, include conspiracy against the U.S., false labeling, theft of U.S. property, money laundering, and attempted smuggling of goods, among others.
A Dino 🦕 Trafficking Scheme
Beneath Utah’s surface, there’s a rich cache of dinosaur fossils, revealing details about prehistoric animals such as carnivorous allosauruses and spine-backed stegosauruses. Almost three-quarters of the state consists of public lands managed by federal or state agencies, and recent fossil finds there include a huge collection of Utahraptors and an entirely new species, a big-nosed distant relative of Triceratops.
Court documents describing the years-long Utah poaching operation allege that Vint and Donna Wade purchased illegally obtained bones and other fossils to sell at U.S. gem and mineral shows and also to ship to China, and that Jordan Willing and his father Steve Willing trafficked dinosaur bones to China using their company JMW Sales. The documents also allege that two unnamed and unindicted coconspirators illegally excavated fossils from federal lands and sold them off to the Wades.
In total, the Wades sold over $1 million in paleontological material to the Willings, according to the court documents, which were filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of Utah.
The fossil heist also led to $3 million in damages, the federal government claims, including large restoration and repair expenses and the costs of losses to science.
During the years of the alleged smuggling activity, the fossil shipments did sometimes run into problems. One shipment of dinosaur bones that was sent from Scottsdale, Arizona, to China in March 2019 was falsely labeled as items including jasper and wood, but the cargo was ultimately held up in China “due to high radiation levels,” court documents state. The fossilized materials had apparently picked up natural radioactive material over time. (Investigators can sometimes discover the origin of fossils based on radioactive signatures in the specimens that provide clues about where they were buried.)

Paleontologists typically remove dinosaur bones using a methodological process designed to limit damage and preserve evidence found in the fossils and their surroundings—information about when dinosaurs lived, what species they were, and sometimes even how they behaved.
Amateur diggers hunting for recognizable body parts to sell, however, generally do not take such care. Federal prosecutors claim that the loss to science from this poaching ring is largely incalculable.

The Musical Instruments Museum (MIM) – European Section. Scottsdale – AZ
After getting the annual membership in June 2022, we decided to visit the Musical Instruments Museum (MIM) again in early January. As shared in my previous blog post about this museum and presented in its website, the MIM began with a vision to create a musical instrument museum that would be truly global, which I think they have really accomplished. As it happened during our previous visit, we…

Thinking of.. Vvr2.. avatar ideas :-)
most of the avatars in bush labs are artistic, lots of parallel stuff if that makes sense? sculptures!! intended to be bright and make a show of things, which is kinda interesting why bush labs, with its own more interesting things and whatever, is placed next to nft museum thing whatever grr (hard to word, I would've made another rpost if i could)
Tucson has a buncha the avatars from the main Scottsdale areas. However, the avatars we know are there just chilling in the plaza are the merge hotel staff, so we've got handbell thing I think her name is florentine (I love her and her story so much but I can't remember her name to save my life!!! Merge hotel was the best part of vvr2 I spread this) and we've got the lil starfish(?( buddy and I guess eye and popcorn. The reason why they're all mostly objects or parts of something is prolly because they're close to people of power, aka, madame! Usually people in power have somewhat detailed avatars. If you're human, you probably have a detailed avatar!!! If you're an employee((??? I hope that is right word?) of someone in power I Am So Fucking Sorry.
Most of the board have detailed, but robotic avatars. They don't represent or have anything alike to a human. Gavin, while having a robotic body, manages to represent a human. Marty also represents a human, however, they're not robotic. Or atleast I wouldn't say they are. Bush isn't robotic, however, she does make robots with Marty.
Anyways, neither are robotic. Compared to the rest of the board. Idk. Bush is a PIC (Plant-Identifying Citizen) and now I'm thinking of hydrangea s
I should post Dewey rant sometime ... also. Don't listen to ANYTHIJG I say it is two am

Not the best photos in the world (apologies) but here are some of Belkis Ayón’s Collagraphs from the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. Notice the scale of several pieces and how they are joined with smaller sections. Each work is mounted on cardboard because it was what was available to her.

Day 141: Sunday May 21, 2023 - “Workin on the railroad”
William, like a lot of little boys, really enjoys a good train. Something about the romance of that one-way Southbound, I guess - that rambler in his blood.
I took a shot one weekend, as I imagine I stressed about some level of task loading (that would seem like cake now,) and turned on Thomas the Train and Friends and responded, quietly in awe, just like the little boy look in that “ussie” on the right.  Wide eyes, mouth open, drool.  And with that, our little guy loved choo-choos.  A switch had been flipped.  I think it was last December.   His second pair of sandals, that he has managed to keep for several months now, are the “choo-choo” shoes, his favorite, and he gladly put those on today when I told him we’d be riding a choo-choo train.  A BIG choo-choo train. A real choo-choo. (I imagined he might be thinking, “yea not like that battery powered one at the zoo!” - and was that really a whole month ago?  We’ve both been doing some levelling up.). YES, buddy, today is a big day.
We busted out from the girls and their lugar-loco to get some fresh air and sunshine together in Scottsdale at the McCormick-Stillman Railway Park after starting the day, at 5:45am, with a couple episodes of Thomas & friends.  Once at the park we “climbed aboard!” a real size old antique dining car train, through the old replica station and museum.  He didn’t make much sense of the inside, at all - but the outside, he just wanted to point and look.  To him, it must seem like its made for a giant.  I might have spiced the imagination a little bit, in telling him that this train used to talk and be on the show before they retired him to be in the park for little boys like him, and let him chew on that for a few minutes while I took him inside to buy a bundle of tickets for us to ride some rides together.  I like to picture that imagination in him like a steam engine, burning up any and all bits of information I throw at him throughout a day, loosely considering what might be real vs fantasy....and I consider that when I narrate with him all day every day, giving his little mind as many fun nuggets as I can in hopes that he grows up to believe the world to be a beautiful positive fun place...to love history, and information, and the grandness of the scheme, easier than most.
The real steam engine that was running laps at the park today, was waiting for us as we climbed in up front, right behind the engineer.  William got very quiet, and focused and smiled a lot. This is what he understood us to be here for - time to ride the choo-choo. When the train started at a nice pace along the mile long track, he started to hum a little version of chugga-chugga.  He waved at the people, called back to the train whistle and as soon as we pulled into the station he was ready with several tracks of “ride it again.” I happily obliged. The second time around, we moved to the caboose to be with the conductor.   Breeze in his hair, sitting on my lap and I was thinking that It was such a neat park, complete with old stops and a long wood shaft tunnel.  Very neat to find such an authentic park to have some time with just me and him before we get back into a busy week. I remember thinking “this was a really nice idea, Dad - way to pull it through.”  But as it would turn out, the train today wouldn’t even be the main attraction!  Before I could get another round of “ride it again” (yes, I may have learned something important from Toddle Waddle) I scooped him up and out of the station to our next big thing - the carousel.
As many times as we’ve been to the Zoo and walked past the carousel, William was never one time shown any interest and so Ive never tried.  But armed with a few extra ride tickets, we found ourselves choose a chariot worthy of King William The Lion’s first ride.   Whats also very interesting is this independent “don’t touch me phase” and suddenly I found myself in my own boundary checking of wanting to not have him fall on his face on his first carousel ride, with also understanding the affinity of saying “Im a big boy, I got this” in such an iconic moment. And so we both eased into it, until I stepped out of the frame and let him ride on his own.  Even with him just holding on with one hand (new toy train in the other).
“No problem, Dad - just like riding a bike, right?  Its not a real horse!”  - the music would stop and the horse would slow and Id have to help him down, as I waited for the formal response ....would we be riding it again? Ayes Ayes.  The second time around we were a bit more choosy and picky about the horse we picked, and a little impatient with the music to start, but once we got going, we got that same awe-full look on his face.   Ah, the world in motion, brings him joy...he must surely have been conceived with Love As A Verb.  Its simply the best, to be with him in these simple moments.
We climbed back into Silver for the ride back to Tucson, and I pulled a little something out of my pocket.   William wasn’t the only one that got a new toy in the gift shop.  I’d picked up a train whistle too and attached it to my keys.  Once I got him strapped in and ready to roll, I blew it loud and proud and then gave an enthusiastic “All Aboard for Tucson!” and looked up to see his toothy smile in the mirror looking back at me.  Nice one, Dad.

Traders Are Dumping Stocks And Buying Gold And Silver
Tumblr media
China, already the most important bullion miner, imported more than 209 tonnes of gold throughout the primary 10 months of the year, a five-fold improve from an estimated 45 tonnes last 12 months. 2. Photos are value a thousand phrases, however make sure not to be decieved, typically footage are magnified to ensure a very good view is on the market for the merchandise, nevertheless this may increasingly not relfect the precise dimension so you could test this prior to buy. So best place to buy gold bars online can see, trying to check yesterday's gold value to at this time's - on an excellent basis - is like trying to match apples and armadillos! In at the moment's dollars, 1975 gold at $196 is extra like $750 in the current market. We offer a variety of ways to spend money on precious metals. He'd made his personal fortune inside the basic bear marketplace of all time, and that he certainly not discovered this can be a once-in-a-career chance. Simply to put the value of gold into perspective, with the present monetary base of the United States, gold value has to go up to between $8,000 to $10,000 per ounce to match gold value excessive in 1980. But there is an estimated amount of about $12 trillion of US Treasury bond exterior the US. The purple arrow point out the time interval associated to the RBA annual report where the 0.15% figure was reported. Beautifully accommodated by the broad, crown-sized 40mm diameter flan, this iconic Australian motif seems simply sensational struck to the very best Proof quality from the world’s favorite treasured steel. Credit Suisse, for instance, one of many world's most reputable minters, might cost extra for a similar quality metal than a smaller, lesser-identified outfit.
PAUL SOLMAN: And all as a result of, says historian Richard Sylla, who chairs the board of Wall Street’s Museum American of Finance, there’s a lot skepticism about government and its cash in and around the high-tech group as of late. The primary objective of the upcoming assembly is the institution of the brand new World Reserve Forex to substitute the US dollar, and that may be very very bullish for gold, as the new reverse forex may need to be partially again by gold. Things solely turn interesting with a break AND hold above $22.00, but that appears troublesome for the remainder of this year, with the m/t bearish equity market, and the broadly sturdy greenback. Though you more than likely will get a return on the collectors silver bar, equal to the spot worth of silver that day, you would possibly still see your invested premium within the “collectors item” fly out the window as you liquidate you silver. Silver products which was sold to prices far above spot was earlier reserved for collators artefacts, silver jewellery, and household silver gadgets. This pattern is ready to hold on all by way of this particular decade as intelligent traders recognize by which gold is de facto a proper protection in opposition to rising value of residing and likewise the devastation from the shopping for energy of money. So I went to my coin seller and purchased about 20 Silver Eagles.

I hate when someone calls something “a hidden gem” just because it’s slightly less popular than something else. The Guggenheim is not a “hidden gem” just because most people think of and know The Met for “museums of New York City” or whatever. Calling Scottsdale, the home of Barrett Jackson, the WM Open, 1/3 of the country’s western themed bachelorette parties, and the majority of the rich people in the Phoenix Metro a “hidden gem” is so ridiculous.
