I honestly don't understand how some people think Alexander Colbourne is "boring." The man is raising the child his wife had by cheating on him. He could have dropped her off at an orphanage and gone on with his life. But no. He kept her, gave her his name, and cares for her as if she were his own.
He also took in his cheating wife's neice when her parents died. He's not blood to either of those girls, but he's still trying to do the best for them because to him they are family.
He's also willing to learn and listen. He actually learned from Charlotte and admitted she was right. He was willing to let her go and let her marry another man because it was her choice. He supports her dreams and goals. He doesn't insist that she be a stay at home wife and mother as was generally expected of women back then. In fact, in the one year leap, Charlotte is getting off work and Alexander is the one initially holding the baby, implying that Alexander is the one caring for their child while his wife is working. This was highly unusual back then.
What about this is "boring"?

Let me just say from the outset that I was totally hooked and will miss Sanditon dearly - These last two seasons were so good and really captured everything that makes a regency-era romance so much fun.
Season 3 begins with Charlotte on her way back to Sanditon to celebrate Georgiana's birthday with her new fiancé Farmer Ralph in tow. She's put Sanditon behind her and is determined to return just for the party - spoilers, that is not what happens. After a few ups and downs and inexplicable misunderstandings, Charlotte, at long last, finds her happy ending in Sanditon.
Things we loved:
Georgiana's mom, and Otis! My greatest fear going into this season was that Georgiana wouldn't get the happy ending she deserved, and there were some moments where I was genuinely worried, but, in the end, she came out on top, just as she should.
Sam Colbourne! Although the relationship between the Colbourne brothers was underwritten and their prior falling-out made no sense, it was a delight to watch these two personalities play off each other.
The return of Lady Susan, and her more complicated back story.
Arthur Parker, king of our hearts, finally gets a love interest. It was so much fun to see Arthur excited and in love.
In a show with some truly unhinged buffoons (looking at you Charles Lockhart), I respected that Ralph was just ok. He was a nice guy, but he just wasn't right for Charlotte.
The beach opera--can we bring this trend back please?
Sanditon started out as show that seemed sympathetic to its more morally ambiguous, red-flag-waving characters. By this season, it's a show that expects us to relish Edward Denham getting repeatedly sprayed with a fire hose.
Things that were ridiculous:
The fact that Edward and Augusta run off alone to a hotel - scandalous! And to the rescue comes...Alexander and Charlotte, who are also...two young single people running off alone to a hotel? I'm not a stickler for enforcing regency-era chaperone rules, but it felt like a wildly and unnecessarily compromising situation for everyone involved.
The idea that Lady Denham would EVER consider giving up her home and her title and her fortune for some banker guy who once left her at the altar.
Arthur's fury at Georgiana when she decided to marry Harry. Arthur knew he couldn't marry Harry, and Georgiana and Harry both planned for Arthur to be in their lives. After everything Georgiana had been through with Charles Lockhart, I thought Arthur would be more understanding of how an eyes-wide-open alliance with a good guy might appeal to her.
Alexander is, as ever, a loveable doofus. He makes a series of bizarre and self-sabotaging choices with great intensity. Really the best thing about him - aside from the big smile we finally see at the end - is that he seems to be open to feedback.
That anyone could be so ill that they're literally at death's door one day, but then perfectly healthy out and about calling on neighbors the next.
Charlotte's crippling fear that she would be letting down her family by breaking off her engagement to Farmer Ralph and marrying....an independently wealthy landowner with an enormous estate.
