My 'Little Devil' is finally on the loose.
I've created a side Tumblr on which to post that thing I wrote during pandemic about Salaì, Leonardo da Vinci's lifelong mate and student. Most recently, erroneously, and egregiously misrepresented by RAI in their miniseries Leonardo, Salaì is one of my lifelong queer heroes. Basically this is me duelling in his honor.

I thought that you would enjoy this lol
Yes!!! In fact!!! Salaì did his own version of the Mona Lisa called Monna Vanna, which is also in the Louvre
Tumblr media
This painting has been restored unlike Leonardos Mona Lisa in fear of ruining it.
If Leonardos Mona Lisa would actually be restored it would be more vibrant like Salaì's Monna Vanna.
Looking at the Monna Vanna is it CLEAR that it's based on Salaì. When you look at the paintings Leonardo did of Salaì which, yes John the Baptist
Tumblr media
St. John was actually originally naked!!! And Leonardo took it EVERYWHERE with him. It was like a prized possession of his. Now I don't know anything about religious texts and how biblical figures are depicted, but from what I read, St. John has NEVER been depicted this way. So Leonardo quite obviously painted Salaì and then was like "uhhh yeah we're going to call this St. John"
We also have this painting of Salaì
Tumblr media
We don't actually 100% sure who painted it, but we are fairly certain it was Salaì himself with Leonardos help. But I would not doubt Leonardo painted it. He was obsessed with Salaì.
But when you take this "self portrait" and do the whole merging thing with Mona Lisa, it's hard to argue that it isn't Salaì.
Leonardo knows what he's doing when it comes to painting, it's not like he painted everyone with the same facial features bc that's all he knew how to do.
Also a fun fact that I think is cute!!! Salaì was obsessed with minor details when painting SPECIFICALLY HAIR!! which is the one huge thing Leonardo obsessed over with Salaì.
When Leonardo talks about Salaì he's like "yeah he's a thief and a glutton but his curly hair is beautiful" HE WAS OBSESSED WITH SALAÌS HAIR. Which is why I think that if we actually restored the Mona Lisa we would be able to see the details in the hair more, and if she does have those right bouncy curls then that's basically telling us that it's Salaì, I don't think we'd need any more evidence
HOWEVER I do think it's a possibility that the Mona Lisa in the end wasn't supposed to reflect Salaì, but he simply used Salaì as a model. Bc Mona Lisa is obvs a woman. Salaì is obviously not. So the painting itself may not be Salaì, but Salaì was used as a model.
The Monna Vanna tho? I feel like Salaì just said "gender bend au time"

1. The Accused
Tumblr media
In the Louvre, there’s a red-pencil portrait of a young boy with unruly hair. Everything about this child crackles with electricity. The gaze of his large, heavy-lidded eyes radiates resentment. His lips are obstinately pressed tight, as if defying his captor to make him speak.
And yet he sits still and lets himself be drawn.
He’s not the one. We know he’s not, even if we’re not sure of his name. He’s been misidentified a million times, maybe due to our own wishful thinking. We say to ourselves: But he could be Salaì, couldn’t he?
Look at that face.
Sure he could.
Let's read the charges against him:
He’s a gutter rat, an urchin, an orphan. He’s a thief, a liar, stubborn, greedy. Even so young, he lures and seduces. He’s a mercenary, hands stretched out to grab what he can. He's a lousy painter, an imitator, a fraud. He's a diva; petty, jealous, vain. He has two dozen shoes and clothing encrusted with jewels. He's a sore loser. He’s dead weight. Deserving nothing, he steals everything. He keeps the best for himself. He betrays and abandons. He dies a pointless death. He had it coming.
This is everything they say about him. But let's begin again, at the beginning.

I have not seen Leonardo yet, but I am already anxious. What will they do with Salaì? Dismissed by critics as a mere lackey unworthy of his place at the great artist’s side… and now replaced as his muse by a purely fictional substitute. Dear Little Devil, YOU were in Leonardo’s heart, YOU were in Leonardo’s art. I will not forget you.

I really am gonna need a series or film dealing with the relationship between Leonardo, Salaì, and Francesco because…because…I think that would be neat 👀 👀 👀

He was ten years old when he became an apprentice, going straight from his parents’ house to Leonardo’s workshop. To be accepted there was highly prestigious and would not have happened if Salaì had lacked artistic talent.
A kid sent away from everything familiar to live among strangers would probably act out– steal, pick fights, break things, have tantrums. But his maestro related deeply with him and helped him channel his confusion into art, learning, and love.
Portraying Salaì as a thieving street urchin, sketchy swindler, gigolo, gold-digger, forger, freeloader, and above all, an artistic poseur has practically become a cottage industry for historians and fiction writers. For RAI to turn him into an opportunistic sex worker to explain his presence in Leo’s life (and gloss over the age difference between them) is false and lousy writing, though not exactly a deviation from past practices.
But surely, surely it cannot be better to portray Salaì as a rentboy met by chance than as what he was– an innocent (if undisciplined) child from a poor but respectable working class family, given to Leonardo for fosterage. Robbing Salaì of his virtue to preserve Leonardo’s is a shit move that creates a damaging narrative. Why does one have to be a whore so that the other can be the hero? Why can’t Leonardo and Salaì both be the heroes of their shared story?
Salaì was a real person who deserves a better legacy than this.

There should be a fun animated movie about Francesco Melzi's life as Leonardo da Vinci's assistant-turned-adopted son. Like when he first entered the maestro's workshop, meeting other Leonardeschi such as Boltraffio and d'Oggiono, how he wasn't really allowed to paint much since he was supposed to be a secretary and copywriter, etc. Plus, exploring Melzi's relationship with Salaì (his sort-of evil older brother lol) and how he dealt with the awkwardness and jealousy from both Leo and Salaì respectively. I think it'll work, something along the lines of Disney or Pixar. It'll be so fun to see 15th-16th century Renaissance aesthetics fully brought to life via 3D animation and song. Actually, if it was in 2D it would be even better!
You know what, I'll write the perfect plot myself and show it to Disney. They WILL make a movie about Melzi someday and I'm gonna make sure of it! 😤
