Pokemon protag sillies at last aaaaa! College had me dying but I could finally sketch something lighthearted
My rambling under cut:
So like I said I think of Calem as a very organized and listmaker-type person. He also has many self-esteem issues since he could never best Serena in pokemon battles. BUT He does pride himself in being called by the people as "the champion's advisor". Serena has always asked for his help in organizing events or trips, since that wasn't her forte. He feels like he is useful and, in a way, he is worthy of standing next to Serena.
Big problem: Serena decided to ask for help from Victor instead of him this time, someone who is also very organized and technical knowledge focused. So while Calem might feel a bit of romantic jealousy (something he will never admit) it's also about feeling replaced in his position.
Also Hilda enjoys seeing him this annoyed and is only there to make things worse until she finds it too pathetic to continue on-

I was hit with a bolt of inspiration and wrote a scene from right before Calem and Serena start their journey.
“Caaaaaallll!”
“Cal!”
“Cal wake up!”
“Okay, okay.” Calem groaned.
Slowly, he opened his eyes. He blinked a few times to clear the crud out of his eyes and make everything less blurry. Once he could see clearly, he saw the source of the voice that had woken him up: a very impatient looking Serena who, for some reason, was wearing his jacket, unzipped to reveal the black t-shirt beneath.
The two of them had been friends since they were very little. Their moms were rival Rhyhorn racers back in the day and lived in the same town so as a result they ended up hanging out a lot and growing a close bond. They treated each other like siblings, right down to Serena calling Calem her brother and Calem calling Serena his sister.
“Finally, you’re awake.” Serena said as if she had been waiting an eternity.
“Unfortunately.” Calem groaned. He glanced at his alarm clock. 5:30 AM. “You know, most people sleep in on the weekend.”
“Yeah, I know, but today’s important!” Serena explained, tapping her heel rapidly. “We’re going to get our first Pokemon!”
Calem’s eyes widened. “That’s today!?”
Serena sighed. “Don’t tell me you forgot!”
Calem threw off his sheets, revealing he was wearing blue pajamas, and practically leaped out of bed. He dashed over to his closet, opened it, and then paused.
“Well, what are you waiting for?” Serena asked. Calem gave her a deadpan look. “Oh! Right!” She covered her eyes and turned around to face the wall.
Now that he had something resembling privacy, Calem stripped down, tossed his pajamas in his laundry basket, grabbed a pair of jeans, and pulled them on.
“Why are you wearing my jacket, anyways?” He asked Serena as he fastened his belt.
“You left it at my house, yesterday.” She explained.
“You’re not gonna give it back, are you.” Calem replied.
“Nope.” Serena said cheerily. “Mine now.”
“Yeah, well, you left your top here when you slept over last week.” He replied, grabbing a collared black tank top out of his closet. “I was gonna give it back but I never got the chance and now I guess I never will cause it’s mine forever now.” He slid the top on. He and Serena had pretty similar body types so it fit perfectly. “Alright, you can look now.”
Serena removed her hand from her eyes and turned around. Caem pulled on his boots and grabbed his hat, placing it snugly on his head. He spread his arms like he was presenting something.
“Well, how do I look?”
“Like a dork.” Serena answered.
“I walked right into that one.” Calem said.
“Yep.” Serena agreed, crossing her arms smugly. “Now come on, lets go get a Pokemon!”

Replaying pokemon Y and picking apart dialogues to add to the fan version in my head is very fun, Especially now that I have a vision for Calem as the canon rival:
(This is written almost like a fanfic so yeah there's Kalosshipping inserted in this little thing)
He would be an Obsessed Are the Listmakers type person, he follows the rules by the book and has an scheduled itinerary as to when and how things will be done. While he did considered Shauna, Tierno and Trevor as friends, he mostly organized his free time into studying and learning about pokemon battles, and that made him into the most proficient soon-to-be trainer of their tiny town.
Serena's addition to the team wasn't something unexpected for him, he was actually asked by his parents to help Grace's daughter. And so he did!
He was prepared to explain about the type chart to Serena... only for her to already know the type chart by association. He was ready to teach her about how to catch a pokemon!.. only for her to already have new fletchling in her team. And he was ready to win against her every time!... only for her to be stronger than everyone else.
He couldn't even keep up with his schedule cause the rest would suggest trying to do something else. He would usually reject it and keep on his journey, but Serena had a different pull to him that made him say yes everytime and have fun together as a friendgroup.
Serena is a natural lider, an example and a fantastic trainer. She's in control of herself and of the world around her, and not as a tyranical ruler, but as a light of guidance as bright as the Lumiose tower that could never go out. What is Calem compared to her?
He was the son of two very strong trainers, being the very best was his plan, he had it all written down and ready as to when and how he would receive the champion title from Diantha. It was part of his order, but Serena came and took it all away in one elegant swift.
The worst part? He admired her, her ways of viewing the world and was happily goofing around with his friends. The order of his world was being shifted in a good but unfamiliar way.
And that was the one thing he hated: feeling out of control. And it was all because of that new girl in town.
Maybe that's what made him almost understand and simpathize with Lysandre. He understood the feeling of having all your expectations of the world broken and destroyed, only to want to redo the whole world and start from scratch. And Lysandre was indeed offering that to him.. he could help him in the mission of reactivating the ultimate weapon and start all over..
Thank Arceus, Serena was there to ground him back into reality. To show him that the solution cannot be control or erasure. It is the balance of life and death, of order and chaos, and believing that the future can be done right with a better path.
For a girl that talks so much about balance and letting go of control, she sure has the heart of the boy under her belt. And he would swear to protect her even in the face of a flower of death.
