Dark Water will be released on 4K Ultra HD on March 19 via Arrow Video. Peter Strain designed the cover art for the 2002 Japanese horror film; the original poster artwork is on the reverse side.

Hideo Nakata (Ringu) directs from a script by Yoshihiro Nakamura and Kenichi Suzuki, based on Kôji Suzuki's 1996 short story. Hitomi Kuroki, Rio Kanno, Mirei Oguchi, Asami Mizukawa, Fumiyo Kohinata, and Yu Tokui, star.

soooo. i finished blue summer. and cried. yay.

rambling here (contains spoilers for the manga and ofc the movie):

OK. i watched the movie first and i will say the movie condensed a lot of the manga and changed a few things here and there. i actually dont mind the changes they made in the movie bc it made it more impactful for me as a movie. if those changes and such were how they were in the manga's i think i would enjoy it, but not as much compared to how i did.

both versions of blue summer did a good job of telling the story in its own way, i wont deny that. i understand the things they cut like the ones with sota telling ginzo his dream, the tunnel/ test of courage part, sacchan and namio's side romance and the beach part. i will not condemn the movie for condensing this much from eight volume manga bc it would feel stretched out. i still love the movie because it gave color and life to the manga.

there are two big changes they did in the movie is first instead of everyone making a movie of namio's manga and changed to them making a promotional video of ueko. at first, it makes you think "why?" but it's still impactful to me. both still do their job of reminding rio of the memories she made in summer with everyone else in ueko and with ginzo especially. the second one is actually the ending and is what makes me think the manga is (A LITTLE BIT BTW) better than the movie.

for the movie, they bring up the fact ginzo saw a mural of sunflowers in tokyo and caused him and rio to meet by chance. this goes into the fate thing, yeah. but the whole point of ao to natsu (the song for the ending credits for the movie) and actually blue summer in general is people taking fate by their own hands and making their own path, not letting other people decide want they should do. rio DECIDES to seek out ginzo. in fact, this is shown well at the part leading up to it.

kinzo is obviously named after ginzo in the sense that kinzo is and i shall quote, "the silver (kinzo) that ginzo brought home". kinzo is the only physical thing shown that is still with her from her time in ueko so kinzo is supposed to be a metaphor for her memory of ginzo and ueko. she feeds him a lot, nurtures and takes care of him so it's supposed to be like how she is still recalling her time in ueko and her feelings for ginzo even tho it's been a while since summer ended. after some things kanno asks her if she wants to go home and she says she doesnt want to. this is supposed to be her trying to forget ginzo and the feelings she has for him by trying to force herself to like kanno via hanging out with him in the meat festival like how everyone wants them to, but no matter what she does everything reminds her of ginzo. the final nail in the coffin is the sounds of cicadas, the thing that brought her closer to ginzo and where she first confessed to him. hearing the sound and remembering ueko and ginzo, she tells kanno she wants to go home because she needs to feed kinzo. meaning she needs to accept the fact that she will never lose her feelings for ginzo.

after she comes home she decides that instead of just letting nothing decide things for her, she should do it and make it her own way. if she believes it was fate she and ginzo fell in love, she'll make a way for it to work. and. just. wahhh??!?!?!?!?!

ALSO. that part when kanno had that swimming test against ginzo??? ginzo stepping on broken glass from a juice bottle from his own liquor store being a metaphor for how he may love it he knows it's hindering his chances of obtaining his dream??? idkkkkkkkk....

idk. idk idk. i lost my words and how to explain it now. just. take this!!!!! wah. WATCH THE MOVIE AND READ THE MANGA!!!

if you love a character relationship focused one, i'd say read the manga. it focuses more on the characters and a few more relationships compared to the movie. (makes sense, they need to focus on rio and ginzo's relationship)

if you love visuals and a nice, fluffy thing to watch after a terrible day, watch the movie. the cinematography of the movie is so good i love how some scenes are played out and just. aough.

What it is.

A divorced mother moves to an apartment building with her daughter where the roof is constantly leaking water. The origins of the leak are supernatural, and lead the mother and daughter to a disturbing discovery.

What rates it.

I love that J-Horror moves slowly, building up suspense without the climax that we’ve been conditioned to expect from American horror movies. It keeps the audience engaged and constantly curious.
