Be Educated, Empowered & Excited To Birth: An Interview with Erin Phibbs
Erin is a midwife, childbirth educator and mum of 4! She teaches online and face-to-face and if you’re not already following her on the gram, her posts are there to educate and empower you. I really love Erin’s in-depth knowledge on all things pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
Enjoy this interview with Erin on her own birth experiences, tips on creating your own birth space, morning sickness and so much more!
I love your bio which states: Be EDUCATED, EMPOWERED & EXCITED to birth. I personally feel the same about birth and want other women to feel the same. Why do you think there’s such a disconnect with some women around empowerment and giving birth?
I think that the media and modern culture has adversely influenced the way people engage with pregnancy and childbirth. The portrayal of normal, physiological birth is missing in the media. Movies and television more often than not, portray childbirth dramatically and perpetuate the medicalisation of what is actually a very normal life event. We are raised to believe that childbirth is a risky and painful experience, rather than understanding our body’s innate ability and power to grow and birth babies. When we understand the process of labour and birth, we can regain our trust in our body’s ability and feel empowered to birth, rather than fearing it.
You’ve given birth four times. How did they vary in experience and in terms of feeling empowered?
All four of my birthing experiences have been very different to one another. The only spontaneous labour I experienced was with my firstborn, then subsequently my second, third and fourth labours were induced.
I wouldn’t say that I went into my first labour and birth experience feeling empowered. I was definitely excited and didn’t fear the process, but hindsight proved that I hadn’t explored my options and I wasn’t clear about where I stood on different scenarios, should they play out. In turn, my labour and birth didn’t go at all how I had hoped. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and the beauty of a second pregnancy and birth is that you get a second chance. I did a lot of self-reflection and debriefing during my second pregnancy and decided, firmly and with great amounts of self-belief, that I was going to have a vaginal birth. My first son had been born with forceps and I wanted to avoid another ‘assisted birth’.
My second labour was induced by way of ‘breaking of my waters’ and a hormone drip. Despite inductions often getting a bad rap, I headed into the experience positive, empowered by my decisions and firmly believing that this birth was going to be different. And it was different. I had a very positive and enjoyable induction that led to a healing unassisted vaginal birth.
While each induction thereafter was different, the birthing experience remained the same. My second, third and fourth labours were incredibly empowering and each birth went exactly how I hoped.
The recipe for an empowered labour and birth is: Knowing your options, a positive mindset, movement, privacy and TRUST.
How do you manage being a mum of four and running a successful business as a Childbirth Educator?
I won’t sugar coat it, it’s tough. I always feel like I’m spinning too many plates and sometimes some of them slow or stop spinning altogether. I have learned some hard lessons about business and what it takes to be your own boss. I do most of my work at ungodly hours, after all of my babies are asleep and I carve out time on weeknight evenings and weekends, for private classes. Childbirth education isn’t something I never saw myself doing but now that I’m here I can’t imagine ever not making time to do it.
Tips on making your own birth space. How did you make your birth space special?
Regardless of where you intend to birth, the elements that make up a positive and productive birth space remain the same. Think dim lighting, LED candles, fairy lights etc. Music or meditation tracks playing and aromatherapy. Try to limit the people within your space and choose those that are welcome, wisely. You should feel safe and unobserved.
Is a CTG always necessary?
Not always. Like with any other test, procedure or intervention, CTG monitoring is a recommendation and it will be up to you to accept or decline the monitoring. A CTG may be recommended at different times throughout your pregnancy and depending where you birth and under what circumstances, CTG monitoring may be recommended during labour.
Does perineal massage prevent tearing? When should you start?
Perineal massage can reduce the risk and severity of perineal tearing during childbirth. It may not prevent tears from occurring but it has been proven to reduce the severity of perineal trauma. I recommend that women commence perineal massage from around 34-35 weeks gestation, after discussing it with their chosen care provider.
Did you suffer from morning sickness when pregnant?
Each of my pregnancies have been different in terms of ‘sickness’. I have never suffered from vomiting during pregnancy but I did have about 16 weeks of all-day nausea during my ‘girl’ pregnancies. When pregnant with my sons, I felt nauseated in waves throughout the first trimester but it wasn’t as severe and I had a lot more energy.
Did you drink red raspberry leaf tea or enjoy any other natural ways to prepare for labour such as eating medjool dates?
I have used red raspberry leaf tea during each of my pregnancies. I’m not much of a ‘hot drink’ kind of gal so I’ve tried it hot, iced and even used the raspberry leaf capsules that you can buy. I encourage clients to incorporate tea as part of a slow evening wind-down, especially in the third trimester.
I consumed medjool dates (LOTS of them) towards the end of my most recent pregnancy. I was booked in to have an induction and while I was more than happy to have another induction a tiny part of me hoped that I would get to experience spontaneous labour again. I think that incorporating safe and evidence-based recommendations that are shown to positively affect labour and birth is a no-brainer. If it’s safe for mum and safe for baby, it’s worth trying.

I used to hate herbal tea. I drank it for medicinal purposes, but it was a chore. But then I learned The Secret, the one that makes herbal tea not only palatable, but enjoyable. Tasty. Delightful, even. I will tell it to you now:
Herbal tea is not tea.
Duh, you say, but let me explain further.
Herbal tea is not tea, and it will suck if you treat it like tea.
Actual tea, as in the tea plant Camellia sinensis, has very specific steep times and temperatures. This varies by variety (green vs black vs white), but it all comes down to a common factor:
Tea is high in tannins.
Tannins make stuff bitter. Tannins are released from the tea if you heat it too high or too long (again, specifics depend on variety but the point stands). If you steep it too long, BOOM, tannins. You put it in water that is still boiling or hasn’t cooled down enough from boiling? TANNINS. You get nasty, bitter, burnt-grass-tasting tea.
Herbal tea almost universally doesn’t have tannins. This means you almost universally can’t over-steep herbal tea. And in fact, and listen up because this is the practical part of the secret, you need to steep it way longer than actual tea if you want to get the flavors into the water!
Those recommended steep times on your herbal tea box are based off actual tea (black tea to be specific). It’s usually somewhere around 5-7 minutes, but what you actually need is something like 10-15 minutes.
And most conventional tea-making wisdom will tell you to not put the water in too soon after boiling, but again, that’s for tannin-rich Camellia sinensis. You could literally boil* your herbal tea if you wanted. It might make it slightly less sweet depending on variety, and you will probably bust your tea bag doing so, but my point is that you should put as hot of water as you can get into your steeping vessel. As in kettle starts whistling, pour it in immediately over the tea bag. Then let it sit for 10-15 minutes as discussed above.
The only exceptions that I know of personally are meadowsweet, red raspberry leaf, and yarrow, and only one of those is a very common herbal tea ingredient. And honestly, it’s not even high enough in tannins to affect your whole cup if it’s just part of a blend.
So please stop drinking weak plant-adjacent water and start getting the actual flavors you paid for.
*I have actually just dumped herbs in a pot and boiled them and it made a delicious tea. I used lavender, chamomile, lemon balm, and mint, all of which I’d grown myself, and literally just tossed the fresh-picked sprigs into a pot and boiled the crap out of it for close to 10 minutes because I forgot about it while I was rearranging the freezer. It was delicious and not bitter at all despite being a color I can only describe as “positively murky,” and I could taste every single one of the herbs I put in there. It also made my whole apartment smell like a sunny meadow. Do with this information what you will. Am I recommending you boil the devil out of your herbal tea bags? Not necessarily. But I’m also not not recommending it.

Hi there, I sent a request a while back, but I probably did it wrong, because I’m not good with technology haha. If you want, would you please do a daddy!Loki imagine where female reader is having a rough period, and she wakes up after she leaked on the bed and she slips further into littlespace because she’s hurting and stressed and scared, and daddy!Loki is just super kind and he helps her clean up and it’s just general fluff🥺 I have pretty bad periods and I slip into littlespace a lot of the times when I’m on them, and I just really want Daddy Loki to help take care of me. If you don’t want to do this because it makes you uncomfortable, I totally understand! I really love your work, and you are so talented! xx
Too Small To Talk
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pairing: daddy!Loki x little!reader
Warnings: Age Regression, period, mentions of blood, fluff
                                   ⭒𖥸⭒
Your period had just started and it was already bad you had started to feel little but put that aside. You were just ready to sleep.
"Loki can you grab me some more tampons from the supply closet please?" You ask.
"Yes of course darling."
You only used a light tampon since your period was just spotting. You and loki got ready to bed. You decide to only sleep in your shirt. You also decided to be little as you drifted off to sleep with loki reading poems to you.
~~~
You woke up in the middle of the night feeling wet. You didn't know what had happened. At first you thought you had wet yourself. You turned on your bedside table light to discover you were bloody.
"Daddy! DADDY!" You try and wake your daddy up by shaking him eventually he wakes up. He also has some blood on him.
"Darling what is it?" He grumbles.
"I bwed frough ma tampon," you were starting to feel really small and nonverbal.
"OK baby let's get us cleaned up."
Loki carried you to the bathroom taking off his clothes and your shirt. He sat you on the toilet and gently helped you take out your tampon. He ran you both a bath and sat in it with you. He slowly massaged your tummy and back to help with the pain. He washed your body with such gentleness you started to fall asleep.
"Baby you can't fall asleep just yet we have to get you changed."
"Mmm," you were to small to talk.
"Is my darling to small to talk," Loki asked but all you could do was nod and hum an answer.
Loki sat you on the toilet once again after helping you into one of his shirts and a pair on panties. He helped you insert a stronger tampon and a pad to just be sure you won't bleed out again. He thought you bled out because your period got strong during the night and the light tampon was to weak to help you.
Loki carried you back to bed and tucked you in. He left you to make you some red raspberry leaf tea to help your cramps. After he came back he cuddled up to you while you drank your tea. You were so happy just to have a daddy like Loki.
"Dadadadadadada!"
"I love you to darling dear."
Loki gave you your paci and sat you on top of him. You were fast asleep within ten minutes.
Further to my Pedro Boys & Cocktails Ramble, here are some signature Javier Peña cocktails, inspired by our favourite surly DEA agent.
Again, there are no measurements, so you can make them as strong or as weak as you'd like. 🍹
If you make any, tag me in the pics as I'd love to see your creations. Cocktail images are a guideline reference as to what I would imagine they would look like based on the ingredients, but are not vebatim. Go nuts.
Drink responsibly, folks 🥴
Check out my previous Pedro Boys Rambles.
I'll mention this might be slightly NSFW due to my filthy, potty mouth cussing.
We'll just ignore the fact I've been spelling Laredo as Loredo... 🙃
Tumblr media
The drink that started it all. 'The Loredo Legspreader.'
Clear gin, lemongrass, lemongrass syrup, fresh lime juice, red Thai chilli to garnish. Serve with a cigarette and a sour resting bitch face. Sweaty pink shirt optional.
Tumblr media
'The Loredo Legspreader - Pink Shirt Version.'
Clear gin, raspberry syrup, pomegranate grenadine, fresh lemon juice, egg white froth to top and a lemon peel twist. Replace egg froth with Javi's own froth, if desired. Sweaty pink shirt mandatory.
Tumblr media
'The Resting Bitch Face.'
Vodka, splash of dry vermouth, sugar syrup, pureed strawberries, cracked black pepper, strawberry and mint sprigs to garnish. Pout to your hearts content. Give everyone the finger. Especially Steve. 🖕🏻
Tumblr media
'This Cat Pussy Is DEA.'
Tequila Blanco, agave nectar, thyme simple syrup, freshly squeezed orange juice, low cal soda. Garnish with fresh thyme sprigs and an orange slice. Salty rim optional. Don't worry, your pussy will be tangy enough on Javier's tongue, cariño. Miaow.
Tumblr media
'Colombian Cunt Licker.'
Red layer: Alizé red passion liqueur, or substitute for any dark red liqueur.
Blue layer: Blue curaçao and lemonade/Sprite.
Yellow layer: Vodka and pineapple juice.
Pour slowly over the back of a spoon for each layer in order of the Colombian flag colours. Top with a pineapple chunk. Cuss wildly when it doesn't fucking work. Say screw it and mix it all up and spread your legs ready for Javier's tongue instead.
Tumblr media
'The Papi Chulo.'
Vodka, peach schnapps, raspberry liqueur, pureed raspberries, sugar syrup, fresh lemon juice, raspberries to top. Then go visit your favourite hooker in Bogotá. Take plenty of cash. Get better the more you practice. Aye Papi.
Tumblr media
'The Sweaty Javi.'
Gin, splash of tequila, sage bitters, grapefruit juice, freshly squeezed lemon juice, rosemary simple syrup, pinch of salt. Screw up your face with how tart this will taste. Then proceed to lick some sweaty collarbone for a refreshing alkaline relief.
Tumblr media
'The Hillbilly Duck Hunter.'
Bourbon Whiskey, stewed and cooled black tea (loose leaf or bagged), citrus oil or lime juice, lime to garnish. Serve over ice. Get your shotgun and go quackers. Fuckin' hillbilly...
Tumblr media
'Smoky Leather Jacket.'
Bourbon Whiskey, agave syrup, splash of cherry brandy, black cherry juice, seltzer water, black cherries to garnish. Serve over ice. Smoky and rich, just like that leather jacket. Lapel nuzzling optional, but encouraged. As is thigh riding on Javier whilst you drink it.
Tumblr media
'The Peña Tenderloin.'
Bourbon whiskey, dash of orange bitters, peach syrup, peach schnapps, maraschino cherries and a grilled peach slice to top. Drink, then take a bite out of that tight, pert DEA agent ass like a piece of rare meat.
Tumblr media
'Downright Un-American.'
Cooled green mint tea, maple syrup, clear gin, splash of apple schnapps, cucumber slices, soda or tonic water, freshly squeezed lime juice, mint leaves to top. Sleep with all the communists you can find and then act appalled about it when questioned.
Tumblr media
'Nicotine Kiss.'
Dark rum, simple syrup, fresh lemon juice. Garnish with lemon wedge or peel. Proceed to chain smoke at least forty cigarettes before enjoying.
Since we are in week 36 we have started doing some things to prepare for birth.
The first one is drinking red raspberry leaf tea. There's not a lot of evidence for this one, but I found it helps with constipation, so if it doesn't help with labor, at least it helps with something else xD
Second one is eating dates. There's serveral research articles proving dates can help soften the cervix and shorten labor time!
Last one is perinneal massage. My husband is helping with this ;) and, yes, it evolves into sexy time. xD This is to prevent tearing.
I'm also impatiently waiting for the weekend to clean the stroller, wash baby clothes, and start putting everything in place for baby's arrival.
I am excited about labor and birth. But I'm a bit sad I won't be pregnant anymore.
note!... reader is implied to have an androgynous appearance! sanji hcs when reader is on their period!!! (could be for @ringdabel cuz they're on their period rn but it could be for anyone who's fighting demons rn <3).
Tumblr media
━━ .  JUST RELAX。sanji bulleted hcs!!
Tumblr media
you're not too sure what had just happened but you aren't complaining in the slightest.
one moment, you're fighting demons (the pain from your period) inside your room on the thousand sunny—the next sanji, who was walking by after serving the girls, enters to check up on you as he looks at you for a moment and then asks with hint of concern in his tone: “[name]-san, do you have a uterus?”
for a second—you were baffled, to say the least. who just comes up to someone and asks that question so randomly? but to consider how your appearance is rather androgynous and your voice can't be heard as either male or female (making anyone not guess your gender), without asking things any further, you nod and say that—yes, you do. but why?
the last thing you knew is that sanji walks away for a few minutes and comes back with a delicious chocolate desert, a heating pad (you assume he must've asked nami or robin), some water, and other stuff that would help you during your period.
you were surprised, but also not, that the cook would do something so generously to assist in your pain but you had to accept it nonetheless. you've only known him a few months since you've joined the crew.
he even offered to massage any parts of your body to help soothe the pain, which really did help and make you relax more easily without feeling pain in every position you take.
for the past few days, sanji has been the greatest help throughout the week of your period.
assisting in things you should've done yourself, running any errands for you when the crew has docked at a new island when you can't (even if you can, he'll still do it for you like a gentleman <3), serving you like he always does with chocolate-themed food, fruits, tea (ginger, peppermint, chamomile, cinnamon, red raspberry leaf tea), and etc. that could make you feel better.
you couldn't thank him any more for his assistance, though while you did wonder how he knew all this—you assumed he asked the girls for help or even had experience of this happening, probably with any female relatives or so.
after the week of your period ends, you decide to thank him for all his help by making him his favorite food on an early morning.
when he entered the kitchen to check on what was going on (he thought it was luffy again, trying to get food from the fridge again + with ussop's help), he was incredibly thankful even when he tells you that you shouldn't have.
(just tell him to take it and accept it- he just can't believe that you would do all this to thank him for helping you through your pain <3).
for the anon with heavy periods, here are some changes you can make to manage it
increase your intake of these nutrients:
iron: obviously necessary to replenish blood loss, but if you’re anemic before your period, your flow will be heavier as well. sources: red meats, chicken, oysters, beans, dark leafy greens, tofu, pumpkin seeds, an iron fish.
vitamin C: for absorption of iron and to strengthen capillaries, reducing bleeding. sources: rosehips (you can buy a bag of organic dried rosehips to put in tea, it’s florally and kinda fruity,) yellow bell peppers, cantaloupe, citrus, strawberries, and dark leafy greens
vitamin K: when it comes to blood clotting, vitamin k is essential. supplementing it has been shown to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding in women who otherwise have no known blood clotting disorders sources: spinach, kale, collard/mustard greens, broccoli
omega 3s: anti-inflammatory and helps produce prostaglandins that regulate the menstrual cycle and flow. sources: mackerel, salmon, sardines, oysters, brussel sprouts, tofu, navy beans, and fish oil supplements
vitamin B6: b6 helps regulate production of serotonin and dopamine and regulates production of PgE1, a prostaglandin that’s been proven to affect menstrual cycle regularity and flow. sources: avocado, spinach, banana, sunflower seeds. this is one i recommend supplementing (along with b12) if your general health is poor.
other stuff:
blood clotting medications: tranexamic acid is the most common one, also called Lysteda, and it isn’t as scary as it sounds. it’s a blood clotting medication for adults only, used after childbirth frequently, and they even give it to people with chronic nosebleeds. there’s also Desmopressin nasal spray which has a different mechanism but the same effect. talk with your dr about side effects, but please do your own research! physicians unfortunately rarely have our best interest at heart and will often fail to inform you of side effects or drug interactions.
ginger: an anti-inflammatory, can ease pain. inhibits the enzymes prostaglandin synthetase and cyclooxygenase, both of which can create a prostaglandin imbalance that causes heavy menstrual bleeding and irregularity
raspberry leaf tea: contains fragarine, an alkaloid thought to help pelvic floor muscle cramps, reduce pain, and shorten period length. don’t drink more than 2 servings if you’re extremely sensitive to estrogen. some women swear this is their holy grail for PMS
cruciferous veggies like broccoli and brussel sprouts help your body eliminate extra estrogen which can reduce bleeding and shorten period length.
i’ll include more about all of the above stuff and other helpful nutrients for PMS like potassium, magnesium, etc in my next post about diet based on your cycle, this was just a quick post for supplements specifically to reduce a heavy flow.
lastly, stay hydrated and rest as much as possible during your period, easier said than done
menorrhagia is defined as abnormal blood loss during menstruation. this means heavy flow lasting for over a week and/or totaling greater than 80 ml (~1/4 cup) per month. if your symptoms are having an impact on your quality of life, consider seeing your gyno to find an underlying cause.
(disclaimer: i’m a dropout whose only medical training is as a lab tech and phlebotomist. i am in no way a health professional. none of this should be taken as expert medical advice)
One of the interesting things I've noticed (been frustrated by) is that while some herbs have a whole bunch of studies done of them, and have multiple systematic reviews and are generally well studied (*cough* St. John's Wort *cough*) others have very little research done on them.
One example of this is red Raspberry leaf and its use for treating menstrual cramps, or dysmenorrhea in the literature. Red raspberry leaf is pretty well known by people in general where I am, to the point that people who don't know anything about herbalism at all know about raspberry leaf tea for menstrual cramps. It is in many herbal books, and if you look at online forums, loads of people are saying it's effective for them, some even going so far as to say it is the only thing that works for their cramps.
Seems like something worth looking into the science of, right?
But when I go to look at the research that I can access (as a non-student, non-researcher), there's very little on raspberry for this use. I found:
One article* in the Lancet from 1941 that looked at the effects of raspberry leaf on animal uteruses, which I would recommend not reading if you're squeamish about descriptions of animal experimentation.
A paper** that referenced the above and the traditional medicinal use of raspberry, and then treated human patients with dysmenorrhea with a combination of five different herbs in one pill. It did find a positive effect, but also one of the other herbs themselves are well studied in this and has a good amount of evidence to back it up.
A review*** that says they found both mild and effective herbal treatments in the literature, but doesn't let you actually read what they are without purchasing the article, which is a massive barrier. And it doesn't reference any clinical studies on raspberry leaf. Any. Which makes me suspect there aren't any studies to reference.
Another article that just references the 1941 article and traditional knowledge.
Finally, a paper in 2002****, this time on guinea-pig ileum. They did find that it had an antispasmodic effect on the guinea pig's small intestine in test tubes.
And that is it. That's all I can find through Science Direct or Google Scholar. No large scale, double-blind, placebo controlled studies in humans. No single-herb studies in humans. No in vivo studies in humans. No review articles, because there is nothing to review. To be clear, these things all exist for other herbs, and I'm super stoked to read them.
And I'm kinda really frustrated, because menstrual cramps are really common, monthly occurrence for about half the population. They suck. If you listen to people who drink raspberry leaf tea, they say it is very effective, going so far as to prevent menstrual cramps from ever happening. You would think that this would be something that scientists have studied, because that's a huge amount of possibly preventable pain.
And yeah, we have over the counter pain medication now, but it still seems like someone would have looked into it. Because I don't think I'm the only one who would prefer having a cup of tea over the other options.
