I realised I don't think I've ever posted any of my realism portrait work, I'll do a small dump!
DESCRIPTION FOR PIECE:
was tossing up very strongly if I wanted to share this one, but I think I may as well to show a teaching moment!
I wanted to excitement a bit of doing full bodies rather than my usual busks; it's definetly not great, but I can work with this to improve.
I think my end goal would be to try to morph together everything I've learned from doing both illustration and portraiture, to create this type of uncanny body horror which is always so fun to do!

Right: Édouard Manet (French, 1832-1883) • The Tragic Actor (Rouvière as Hamlet) • 1866 •
Left: Diego Velázquez (Spanish, 1599-1650) • Portrait of a famous actor at the time of Philip IV (Pablillos Valladolid) • c. 1635
The French painter Édouard Manet, on a trip to Spain in 1865, wrote about the portrait to Henri Fantin-Latour: Perhaps the most astonishing piece of painting that has ever been made is the picture entitled Portrait of a famous actor at the time of Philip IV (Pablillos Valladolid). The background disappears. It is air that surrounds the man, dressed entirely in black and full of life.
Clearly, Manet's painting is a sort of omage to Velázquez. Both are portraits of actors, though Manet's actor looks remarkably like Manet! The interesting twist in the Manet lies in the letter M that is formed by both the shadow and the sword. In the Velázquez portrait, the letter is a V that could represent either the artist's or the subject's initial. Manet's treatment of the letter detail shows not only creative prowess but also a sharp wit. No pun intended.

This is Bisan Owda (@wizard_bisan1 on IG), she's a young journalist who's been documenting the daily life in Gaza, Palestine since before October of last year and continues to do so now, as her and her family have been displaced by Israel, her home and workplace destroyed in the bombings. If you don't already follow her, I highly suggest to do so, as she takes interviews from the local people in the refugee camps and provides a fantastic insight into Palestinians as a nation, their culture and the horrors they face under the Israeli apartheid regime in their own land.🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸
