Tim’s on the desk when the call comes in, he hears it over the radio he leaves turned on during the nightshift because he likes to know what’s going on in the streets. It’s your address but it can’t be you, because you, you’re careful, you wouldn’t go back to that house, you know better than that.

He doesn’t remember the drive, only the sensation of his heart pounding against his chest as he flicks on the blues and twos, the siren wailing. It drowns out the rush of blood in his ears as he hurtles towards your home, the one you’d abandoned almost three months ago.

It’s when he sees the look on Angela’s face that he realises it’s true. The tears, the quiet devastation, it’s written all over her features. His breath catches in his chest and each step he takes grows heavier, the dread clawing at his insides.

The front door has been kicked in, a black boot print is embedded on the blue paint, the lock is shattered. His mouth goes dry, and it feels like he’s bleeding out into his chest because he knows what he’s going to find when he steps into the living room, it’s on the face of every single person he'd passed in the hallway.

There's blood smeared across the wall, the spatter of droplets stark against the cream paint. He can taste the copper on his tongue, the air is thick with it.

Nolan tries to stop him, putting himself between Tim and the body but by then it’s too late because he knows it’s you. He recognises the tattoo of the constellation on your inner forearm, he’s traced over it a thousand times before.

The agony hits him in a rush, and he swears it feels like a blade twisting between his ribs before it plunges into his heart. His knees buckle and he finds himself beside you, his fingertips brushing the hair away from your features. You’ve been beaten, it’s one of the worst that Tim has ever seen. Your skin is still warm to the touch, and it gives Tim a shred of hope because he’s not ready to lose you just yet. His fingers trail down from your temple, along your cheek to the space just underneath your jaw. It’s faint, but it’s there, the tiny thread of a pulse underneath the pads of his fingers.

“Cara,” He whispers your name into the ether, it rolls off his lips like a prayer. “Cara stay with me ok?”

There’s no indication that you’ve heard him. Tim doesn’t need it. Right now, you’re alive and that’s all that matters.
