For Christmas in 2015-2016 my aunt gave me the R.E.X Lego Ninjago set. Being the kid that I was, I built it, then took it apart and made other stuff with it. So I have this big box of Legos from various sets I’d built and then dismantled. Somewhere in that box is the Kai minifigure, lost to the sands of time

i can't remember if you've ever said anything about it before but as the resident Ronin Enjoyer do you have any thoughts on some of the more irredeemable or straight up bad parts of his writing (i.e. what he did to zane in skybound and possibly ToE? but mainly the one thing with nya. like i'm not gonna fault anyone for not liking him but i personally feel like that never should've been written in in the first place and it sucks seeing people act like liking him is a sin. you know :/)

Ronin my guy my scrungle he is not the best man but also he suffers from bad writing lol. The Nya thing.... As much as I personally prefer to pretend it didn't happen because it feels like in the early days of Ninjago the writers consistently kept forgetting that she's supposed to be a minor (SKYBOUND) as well as making her face the occasional casual sexual harassment/assault (evil Jay forcefully kissing her), this is actually consistent with Ronin's character because:

Granted, the reason I prefer to ignore this aspect of him is because it's just plain stupid and he gets no real backlash from it in canon. And with Misako it's very much out of nowhere and Ronin doesn't even seem like he's interested. He erased her memories to pit her against the ninja and nothing else, but for some reason it was decided she should be putting her hands all over him like that 💀 However, I don't blame people for looking at this and deciding he's unlikable for it.

With the Zane stuff, I look at him taking Zane and Pixal to Chen's as something he had no other choice to do. It's kinda confirmed in the book Way of the Departed that it's the case (though my own reasoning is a bit different compared to the book), but at the same time, this was during a time he was a bit more eviler lol. So if he did this with evil intent then well he's grown since then at least.

As for what he did to Zane in Skybound, tbh fucked up and I'm glad it was technically undone. But Zane and Pixal were also kinda treated like objects that season in general too. The way Zane treated Pixal, the general existence and then complete dismissal of Echo, and whole thing with the Mechanic.... not great.

For me, personally I see Ronin as a tech lover who loves R.E.X so much he considers it a person, and by extension would respect Zane and Pixal in that regard, especially after befriending them but that's just me 🤷

But tbh there is something Ronin has done that is far more heinous than being robophobic and a creep, and that's what he did to the Islanders. I do not like season and what it did to him. Of all the people he goes and robs, it's the isolated people no one knows exists lmao. He doesn't just take their money, he takes their food, and takes so much they resort to human sacrifice. Like what the fuck. This felt more like something maybe SoR Ronin would do. And he was treated more like a common villain with no real history with the ninja at the end, too.

I don't wanna fully say it's out of character for Ronin to rob an entire island of people though, because I do feel like if desperate enough, he would go back to how he was before. I don't think he's above betraying the ninja, or hurting innocents because we've been shown he's afraid of dying (or at least going to super hell lmao) and is overall untrustworthy. But the thing is, he was fine! He had a deal with the Commissioner and was doing fine! Why make him do this, and then arrest him with the very people he used and put back in prison himself and then have him be just.... totally fine and friends with everyone again, prisoners and ninja alike lmao. It's bad writing to me. And after his development and and his relationship with the ninja, it seems very ill fitting to have him be the one lead the prisoners on the island when the Mechanic and/or Ultra Violet are right there.

So yeah I mean, if people don't like him I get it. At face value he is not a great guy lol. But for me there's a lot to like about him just because I really like his type of character when done well. He was a great influence for Nya and I love their relationship. He just suffers from poor writing just like.... every other character in this show 💀

And people better not be harassing or hating on others for liking a goddamn LEGO of all things. Please there are real problems to have. I'll continue loving Ronin regardless if others consider it a crime to lol I'm a grown bitch and can do whatever I want ❤️

I like to think that nobody saw Ronin go to the tea shop in R.E.X., but rather, he just appeared out of nowhere

Ivy Crest

1: Gonna go off the specifier thing here and gonna also say it depends on where she is in her life. When she's still living with her mom? She's saving her mother's ring because she knows the value her mom places on it. Once she's living with Ronin... I would say she goes for R.E.X. or her lockpicking kit. Ivy doesn't have a lot of possessions that are hers per se, she doesn't form material attachments because she's used to exchanging things, so her stuff rotates out frequently. Although, post her and Luna meeting, she would absolutely save any gifts Luna has given her. Those are the first and only things she locks away and doesn't allow anyone else access to. Ronin understands that if he so much as glances at them wrong Ivy will blow him into the sea (he wouldn't dream of it. well maybe a little. but he wouldn't actually do it.)

33: Worst injury... hmm... honestly, I need to go back and do her fight scenes bc I wanna give her a few in S5 but the one I know for sure (and thus her worst injuries) are when Morro steals the Scroll of Airjitzu and she goes after him. She:

Singlehandedly tries to fight a bunch of ghosts and gets tossed about for her troubles

Singlehandedly is trying to get the ninja to back off too

Does parkour across Stiix, gets to the dock and jumps into the freezing cold water

is almost drowned by strangleweed

Needs a lot of warm tea and blankets after Ronin and R.E.X. rescue her, so it's convenient that she helps Ronin get Kai to give up all of the Ninja's Steep Wisdom shares :D

Nothing terrible, but that will definitely change :) (threat)

59: Building a better life, whatever that looks like.

Before her mother died, Ivy wanted them to be stable. She learned to cook and clean and anything else to make her mom smile. Her mom smiling meant everything was okay, because she so rarely smiled when Ivy was a child.

Once her mother passed and she was living on her own, it was just survival. A better life was one where she wasn't hungry or cold. Then Ronin found her, and a better life became prestige and the promise of a house on a hill, bought with their ill-gotten funds. Once Luna is in her life, that plan becomes a bit more honest and includes Luna too.

Ivy's biggest dream and motivator is the idea of a better life than the one she had before. She wants peace and love and a home she can relax in, with her family. And she'll never admit it to anyone, but it's that dream that keeps her going on the cold, hard days. On the days when she just wants to give up like her mother did. She just thinks of a warm house, a luxury that felt impossible to her as a child.

Clears throat. I love you, Ivy. Time to go insane over some moms.

Ruth Whispernight

7: How do I put this... so Ruth has committed murder and kidnapping, but it was an act of self-defense.

See, Ruth is what is called the Wisp. The mythology surrounding her bloodline is that they are the scale-balancers of Ninjago. They keep light and dark in balance when the natural order fails, basically subtly influencing others to do things to create balance. They manage this from a sequestered forest in Hiroshi's Labyrinth which mortals should not traverse into (and may or may not be why so many people go missing in there.) Unfortunately, people still try and accidentally stumble into the Wisp's Forest.

Which is what some foolish explorers did one day while trying to map that forsaken place. Willow knew her duty and carried it out. So yeah. Oopsies. She has confessed this to only 1 person though and that was an explorer she met while looking outside her forest for other trespassers, but Ruth couldn't murder her because they became best friends and she never actually saw the forest, so it was okay!

39: Hear me out: she really wishes she was better at manipulation.

Her duty is very dependent on the ability to influence both good and evil people to do things and she doesn't have an elemental ability to make this easier. She has the ability to sense things and monitor the world, but otherwise it's up to her to figure out what she has to do. Ruth was born and lived in the Forest her entire life, like most other Wisps. Her social skills are actually 0 and it's a blessing that Naomi just thought she had mad neurodivergent swag like the rest of her friends. Ruth has communicated only with animals, and they tend to be very direct, so she is also very direct, which then makes it hard to persuade them.

55: Naomi, hands down. Naomi is Ruth's best friend and confidante. Naomi is the only one Ruth trusts enough to tell that she's the Wisp. Ruth admires Naomi. She's brave, headstrong, unafraid, and crafty. Naomi is a warrior. Whereas Ruth is encouraged to meddle in the shadows, Naomi faces things head-on. Ruth admires that she is more active than other mortals she's seen.

On top of that, Naomi teaches Ruth to be human. Naomi is the reason Ruth leaves the Forest and breaks the precedent set by her ancestors. Naomi fascinates and inspires Ruth so much with her simple human traits that Ruth literally upends her entire life for her and only goes back when it's apparent their relationship is over.

Other than that? less look up to and more is fascinated by Garmadon. His vacillation between light and dark grabs her attention. Doesn't so much look up to him as wants to study him. They aren't really friends, but she definitely asks Naomi about him so much that Naomi suspected something else was going on.

Phew, Wisp lore my beloved. Sorry if this one was a bit messier as I just reworked it, but I was happy to talk more about it and Ruth!

Elizabeth Chumsworth

15: Adventurous and curious! First and foremost, Elizabeth considers herself a researcher. That has always been her passion. However, when she's a bit older and gets the chance to reconnect with Nataly, she would also describe herself as a mother who loves her daughter deeply. She's simple, she enjoys her studies and loves her little girl (said little girl was in her 20s when they met again, still little).

16: A bright-minded girl with a lot of ideas and very little self-preservation. Her time with the previous EMs was defined a lot by her going up to them and dumping random insane lore she knows, specifically about the serpentine. She was known for doing dangerous or potentially risky things in search of information. Before the Serpentine War she asked permission to do an ethnographic study of serpentine culture in their villages and got approval from some Anacondrai. Then the war broke out and they were like "we might keep you here" and she went "oh this is fascinating! if i promise not to tell can i sit in on war meetings?" and everyone stared at her like she was covered in fur. She got to sit in on those meetings supervised btw, being the master of love does give you a certain amount of irresistibility. Very posh advisor who dreamed of doing more kept an eye on her to make sure she wasn't doing anything suspicious. His name was Pythor and they got along swimmingly :D

35: She wasn't sure if she wanted children at first. There was always the question of if she could do her work with a child, but she always figured that was a question for later. Then, she got pregnant, a huge shock that she had to come to terms with while her husband was being sealed away in a tomb and she was being tried for treason, but the answer soon became an unequivocable "yes." she loves Nataly with all her heart and soul and one of her biggest regrets is that she wasn't able to raise her herself.

44: Elizabeth is not above lying, but most of the time she doesn't have to. Her powers as the master of love include the ability to persuade people to do what she says, though this does not guarantee they will do it. Still, she relies on that as opposed to out and out lying.

One thing she won't do though is break a promise. If she promises you something, she means it. She promised the serpentine the information she gathered in her research would be strictly used for educational and historical purposes under her supervision, and she kept that promise. Her writings from the war were only published years later when she got out of Kryptarium and donated them to the Ninjago Museum of History, kept safe and hidden until then by her friend, Twyla.

ABANDONED AU OPENING!

(I'm sorry in advance for all the angst. This is probably the worst part in terms of blood. But other than that, the entire story is dark... SO........ bear with me) 🥲

A blast of energy shot out of an inky black cloud, and exploded as it made contact with the nearest object. And then… darkness again. And pain. And rushing wind. It was almost like falling… Because it was falling. Jay opened his eyes to see him falling off of the top of Borg Tower, but it was blurry, and it felt like it was happening in slow motion. He could almost make out his friends’ voices calling out his name, but they weren’t clear either. Jay couldn’t feel or hear anything except for the wind. But then it stopped. Every thing stopped. It was dark, and quiet. Empty. He thought he felt a burst of pain for a second, but he didn’t feel it any more. He didn’t feel, hear or see… anything anymore. Just dark. Ninjago City was under major threat, an attack of galactical evil proportions. The ninja had ordered an evacuation of not just the city, but a good chunk of area around it. And through the chaos, a certain thief was trying to nab all the valuable things the residents had left behind. Ronin. He didn’t care if it was someone’s dropped wedding ring, or a cash register that a restaurant just so happened to leave unattended. He’d take it. And he did. At this point, he had an entire sack full of stolen treasures, and was about to make a break for R.E.X. (his airship) But right as he was about to call for it, something caught his attention. An explosion atop Borg Tower, and something that went flying off. It looked pretty big; possibly one of the ninja’s weapons? That could be worth a pretty penny if that was the case. And Ronin DOES NOT pass up on anything even remotely rare, so he ran to the direction of the objects landing spot. It didn’t take him long to get there, and it took even less time to realize that it wasn’t a sword that fell off the tower- it was Jay. The master thief stood in shock at what he had just found. “It’s… It’s that kid. But how did?-” Ronan trailed off as he stared down at the child. He hesitated at first, but he slowly inched closer to take a better look. “Oh, please don’t tell me that’s all blood…” he got closer. *sigh* “Ya. It is.” Jay was covered in blood, and his clothes were all torn. That implied that he partly tumbled down the pile of ruble. Not just fell straight down and hit the sidewalk. Either way, Jay was dead. There was no possible way for him to survive a fall and tumble like that. Ronin was practically hovering over the ninja, probably thinking about checking his pockets for change or something. What? A dead man doesn’t need that $1.50 anymore. What’s he gonna do? Buy a soda? Just as he reached down to check, something out of a miracle happened. Jay gasped and opened his eyes. Only a sliver, but noticeable enough to terrify Ronin into falling back onto his butt. “You- y- you’re alive?!?” he said in a panic. Jay just lied there completely out of it. He didn’t know why, but Ronin felt terrible for him. He liked to act all big and tough, like he only cared about himself, but this time… it was so weird. So difficult to keep up the act. It was strange, something it Ronin’s head was screaming at him to help him. A voice. One that just kept getting louder. Ronin tried to ignore it, looking away from Jay. But he broke and looked down at the wounded ninja. Jay looked like he was dying. Then Ronin’s gaze met with Jay’s. And there was something he couldn’t ignore further… a small spark in his eyes. It was the look of begging for help. He could tell Jay was in a lot of pain, and the look in his eyes- Ronin didn’t know what in the world he was about to do, but he knew he had to do it. The thief whistled for R.E.X as he picked up Jay. The air ship came rocketing over from a distant rooftop. Jay gave one final look up at Ronin, and then everything went black.

Skybound | Podniebni Piraci (Sky Pirates)

55. Infamous | Niechęć (Reluctance)

● This is the only season so far where the 'Episode [number]' part is read in polish dub.

Also, Jay's got a new Voice Actor, exclusively for this season. No clue why.

● Lil'Nelson is first untranslated, but later Lloyd says 'Nelsonku' (Diminutive of Nelson).

● In this episode Stiix is pronounced like 'Styx' in polish (as in the river from greek mythology).

● Clouse: "I've freed a genie!" → "Uwolniłem ducha!" (I've freed a ghost!) Probably because 'genie' and 'djinn' are the same word in polish. Whenever 'genie' is used it's translated to 'ghost'.

● The mention of being unable to wish for more wishes is absent. It's not until near the finale that this rule is mentioned for the first time.

● Some reappearing phrases and names of important objects:

The Teapot of Tyrahn is changed to the Lamp of Tyrahn.

"Your wish is yours to keep." → "Twe życzenie mym rozkazem" (Your wish is my command.)

"I wish it all away." → "Życzę sobie by to wszystko się skończyło." (I wish for it all to end.)

Misfortune's Keep is translated to the 'Fortress os Misforune' (Twierdza Nieszczęścia).

● Man: "No one cares here for them fruit-colored Ninija."

Cole: "What fruit is black?"

Jay: "Blackberries?"

→

Man: "Nikogo tu nie interesują dzieciaki w tęczowych ubrankach." (Nobody's here interested about kids in rainbow clothes.)

Cole: "A gdzie tu w tęczy czarny?" (And where is black in the rainbow?)

Jay: "W nocy na przykład?" (In the night for example?)

● When Jay lists the bad thigs that happened after the team splitted, Morro's Possession is translated to Morro's Madness.

56. Public Enemy Number One | Wróg Publiczny Numer Jeden

● Misako: "I wish I hadn't said anything in the first place." → "Gdybym miała trzy życzenia, mogłabym to wszystko cofnąć." (If I had three wishes, I could undo it all.)

● Instead of Jay saying that he's the last one to figure out Monastery being the meeting place, Kai says it.

● Jamanakai is pronounced 'Jumankai' in this episode.

● Ronin talks to R.E.X. as if it's a dog.

● Cole calls Jay brother.

57. Enkrypted | W Niewoli (In Captivity)

● Dogshank is translated to Psia Kostka (Dog's Ankle). 'Psia Kostka' is also a mild swear in polish, so Dogshank's name is a pun here!

Monkey Wrench is translated literally (Małpi Klucz). The rest of the Crew's names aren't translated.

● Kai [to Dareth]: "You're our manager! What are you doing to manage this?" → "Ponoć jesteś artystą! Może byś wymyślił jakąś sztuczkę?" (You're supposed to be an artist! How about you come up with some kind of trick?)

● When Dareth and the Kryptarium Warden talk about the Brown Ninja they talk about him in third person, as if the Warden's unaware/pretending to be unaware about Dareth being the Brown Ninja, but in polish Dareth uses first person, and acts as if he doesn't know who the Brown Ninja is.

● Soto: "[Jay] says everything obvious!" → "Właśnie odkrył Amerykę!" (He just discovered America!) 'To discover America is a polish idiom, used when someone says something obvious/ well known. It's the second time it appears in Ninjago, the first being in Tournament of Elements.

● After the prison break out, Soto calls the Ninja Comrades of Misery, when in english he calls them Pajama People.

58. Misfortune Rising | Powrót Twierdzy Nieszczęścia (Return of the Fortress of Misfortune)

● Ed: "And we gladly raised you as our own." → "I postanowiliśmy, że cię nie oddamy." (And we decided to not give you away.)

● Jay: "Is this where my birth father lived?" → "Tu mieszkał mój prawdziwy ojciec?" (Is this where my real father lived?).

Whenever Jay uses phrase 'birth parents' it's translated like that. I'm...undecided whether I like this decision or not. On one hand, it undermines Ed and Edna as parents. On the other hand, when Jay later says that Ed and Edna are his real parents, the realisation has more weight added to it and hits harder.

There's also the fact that I don't know how else it could be translated? Birth parents in polish would literally be 'rodzeni rodzice', which sounds odd since both words have the same core. Like, imagine saying 'my birth birthers' or 'my parental parents'. Weird, right? When talking about birth parents, 'biological' is generally used, but i can see why it's not utilised, as 'prawdziwy' already has three syllables, and 'biologiczny' would have four. So I'm not sure if there's a right anwser here.

● Sky Pirates is translated to 'Latający Piraci' (Flying Pirates).

59. On a Wish and a Prayer | Na Własne Życzenie (On Your Own wish)

● Gayle Gossip is translated to Gayle Plotkara ( Plotkara → Gossip Girl)

● Clancee: "I now pronounce you all-powerfull." → "Ogłaszam cię Panem Wszystkich Życzeń." (I pronounce you the Lord of All Wishes).

Season 6 took over four pages. Next week I'll be posting DotD along with Season 7. Originally I planned to post Skybound with Day of the Departed, but decided that Hands of Time thematically fits better.
