Nine-year-old Ebony Simpson from Bargo, New South Wales, Australia, always dreamed of becoming a police officer. She loved cooking and singing along to Daryl Braithwaite. She lived at home with her parents and her 15-year-old brother, Zachary.
On the 19th of August, 1992, Ebony got off her school bus and started to walk home. Typically, Ebony's mother, Christine, would meet her at the bust stop but on this day, she was too busy. Instead, Christine asked Zachary to meet her after he got off his own bus from school. That day, however, his bus was late and when Ebony hopped off the bus, there was nobody there waiting for her. She decided to walk home alone.
As Ebony was approaching her home, she noticed a car at the side of the road that appeared to be broken down. She walked towards the car and was grabbed by the driver, Andrew Peter Garforth, and thrown into the trunk. Ebony was literally feet from her front door. Garforth drove Ebony to a remote dam. Once there, he bound the terrified girl with wire and sexually assaulted her. Afterwards, he filled her pink backpack with rocks and threw her into the dam.
After reporting Ebony missing, it took police 48 hours to find her body. Police soon zoned in on Garforth who had participated in the search for Ebony, knowing all too well where she was. After his arrest, he readily confessed and showed not one shred of remorse. He told police that after throwing her into the dam, he heard her calling for help. He turned around and saw that she was on her back, struggling to get to the bank. When asked what he did, he replied: “I walked away.”
During his trial, Justice Newman noted that drowning “is a terrifying and slow manner of death,” adding that Ebony’s “last moments must have been spent in abject fear.” Garforth was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison.

Two Takes on a Hardy Novel
Tumblr media
Julie Christie and Alan Bates in Far From the Madding Crowd (John Schlesinger, 1967)
Cast: Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Terence Stamp, Peter Finch. Screenplay: Frederic Raphael. Cinematography: Nicolas Roeg. Production design: Richard Macdonald. Film editing: Malcolm Cooke, Jim Clark. Music: Richard Rodney Bennett.
Tumblr media
Matthias Schoenaerts and Carey Mulligan in Far From the Madding Crowd (Thomas Vinterberg, 2015)
Cast: Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Tom Sturridge, Michael Sheen. Screenplay: David Nicholls. Cinematography: Charlotte Bruus Christensen. Production design: Cave Quinn. Film editing: Claire Simpson. Music: Craig Armstrong.
Almost 50 years separate these two adaptations of Thomas Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd, and the differences between the two owe as much to film technology as to changing tastes. As always, translating page to film involves compromises. Screenwriter Frederic Raphael remains faithful to the plot, with the paradoxical result that characters become far more enigmatic than Hardy intended them to be. We need more of the backstories of Bathsheba Everdeen (Julie Christie), Gabriel Oak (Alan Bates), William Boldwood (Peter Finch), and Frank Troy (Terence Stamp) than the highly capable actors who play them can give us, even in a movie that runs for three hours -- including an overture, an intermission, and an "entr'acte." These trimmings are signs that the producers wanted a prestige blockbuster like Doctor Zhivago (David Lean, 1965), which had also starred Christie. But Hardy's works, with their characters dogged by fate and chance, don't much lend themselves to epic treatment. David Nicholls's screenplay for the 2015 film is much tighter than Raphael's, and about an hour shorter. Nicholls makes most of his cuts toward the end of the film, omitting for example the episode in which Troy (Tom Sturridge) becomes a circus performer, one of the more entertaining sections of the Schlesinger-Raphael version. I think Nicholls's screenplay sets up the early part of the stories of Bathsheba (Carey Mulligan) and Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts) much better, though he has to resort to a brief voiceover by Mulligan at the beginning to make things clear. His account of the affair of Troy and the ill-fated Fanny Robbin (Juno Temple) is less dramatically detailed than Raphael's, but in neither film is their relationship dealt with clearly enough to make us understand Troy's character. John Schlesinger, a director very much at home in the cynical milieus of London in Darling (1965) and Sunday Bloody Sunday (1971) and New York in Midnight Cowboy (1969), doesn't show much feeling for Hardy's rural, isolated Wessex, where the weight of tradition and the indifference of nature play substantial roles. What atmosphere the film has comes from cinematographer Nicolas Roeg's images of the Dorset and Wiltshire countryside and from Richard Rodney Bennett's score, which received the film's only Oscar nomination. And where atmosphere is concerned, Thomas Vinterberg has an edge thanks to technological advances: In Schlesinger's film, despite the fine cinematography of Roeg, the interiors seem impossibly overlighted for a period that resorted to candles and oil lamps for illumination. The change in film technology now makes it possible for us to see the way people once lived -- in a realm of darkness and shadows. (We can almost precisely date when this change in cinematography took place: in 1975, when director Stanley Kubrick and cinematographer John Alcott worked with lenses specially designed for NASA to create accurately lighted interiors for Barry Lyndon. Since then, the digital revolution has only added to the arsenal of lighting effects available to filmmakers.) So cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen's adds an element of texture and mystery to Vinterberg's version that was technologically unavailable to Roeg, and not only in interiors but also in night scenes, such as the first encounter of Bathsheba (Carey Mulligan) and Sgt. Troy (Tom Sturridge), when he gets his spur caught in the hem of her dress. The scene is meant to take place by the light of the lamp she is carrying, which Christensen accomplishes more successfully than Roeg was able to. On the whole, I think I prefer the newer version, which is less star-driven than Schlesinger's, but in the end the best version of the story is Hardy's novel.

If Marinette was a guy, let me tell you what would've happened. People would go WILD for a sensitive, artistic and cute boy who's lovesick and a big romantic. Him having Adrien's photos would never be a big deal bc from a long time, fandom is apologetic and too forgiving of a male characters action. He wouldn't be called a stalker, he would be called protective and so possessive and cute. I've seen ppl defend a guy who drugs the mc and sexually assaulted her. Trust me, this won't be a problem.
Tumblr media
I know! Literally the only male main characters who get crap for their behaviour are Danny Zuko from Grease, Noah from Notebook, Howard Volovitz from Bug Bang Theory (who btw had character development unlike Raj who ACTUALLY deserves hate but doesn't get it) and Ross Geller from Friends. Everyone else is totally fine.
I know the praise for being "good fathers" Homer Simpson from Simpsons and Richard Waterson from The Amazing World Of Gumball get when they are both sh*tty fathers and sh*tty husbands.
Homer always whines about how much he hates his life and his own family and his job and literally all his friends tell him they would die for a life like that but he doesn't appreciate it. Every time Marge told him to do something useful for their household he doesn't want to do it and she has to. For a while I loved him because he's hands down the funniest character in the show until he found out Marge is going to see a therapist every week from how unhappy she is with her life, instead of talking about that to her and trying to make their marriage better, he chose not to tell her anything because he thinks the therapy is enough, he didn't even feel sorry for her because after therapy she's always cooking good meals and is in mood for s*x so it works for him. Every time he ruined something she made he gets rewarded in the end of the episode, and she and their kids always forgive him. He literally doesn't even care about Maggie, always makes Lisa's life harder, and HE LITERALLY CHOKES BART AND PEOPLE SEE THAT AS FUNNY AND NO ONE EVER CALLED IT OUT! Bart literally has trauma from that, it was established in the show and the movie. You know who is hated in that show? Lisa. Lisa, who is one of the sweetest characters and one of my favourite characters I relate so much to, is hated because of her religion, Homer is loved for being a jerk.
Richard Waterson is so bad my own grandma hated him! He does literally nothing around the house and kids, Nicole has to work and take care of three freakin children AND the household but he can get away with everything and people even see him as a good guy who "tries his best" because he spends all day in bed eating junk food.
Peter Griffin and Quagmire from Family Guy are also horrible characters. Peter is a bad father who hates his daughter and Quagmire is a LITERAL r*pist and people not only love Peter but also laugh at Quagmire's r*pe jokes and scenes where they hinted that he r*ped someone.
Patrick Star from Spongebob Squarepants is so bad that I was a kid and I already hated him. He's treating Spongebob like cr*p and uses him and Spongebob always has to apologise cuz HOW DARE HE BE MAD AT HIS BEST FRIEND WHO'S ALSO THE WORST FRIEND YOU COULD EVER HAVE and Patrick is so popular he even got a spin-off show.
Aaron Samuels from Mean Girls was the biggest hypocrite ever and no one hates him, everyone hates the main female character who was also a hypocrite but you know how it goes - she learned her lesson, she became a better person, and he got rewarded even though he's still a jerk and he doesn't even realize he's a jerk.
I already wrote about My Best Friend's Wedding and Made of Honor being two movies with the same plot but MBFW has a female lead and MoH has male lead and the female lead also suffered the consequences and learned her lesson and she lost and EVERYONE EVERYWHERE hates her, you won't see anyone on the Internet who loves her, but no one hates him who won by doing something terrible, never learned his lesson and never faced the consequences. She can't be with a guy she loves but he can be with a girl he loves and she is terrible he's not, he's a hero.
In that movie Emma the main character who's wonderful ended up with a guy who was is always criticising her and yelling at her and I don't see people complaining about that.
Gumball in The Amazing World Of Gumball is a really bad kid. He's selfish and mean for no reason and no one hates him and he doesn't get character development but you know what? I'm glad no one hates him cuz he's just a kid - and so is Marinette. Gumball is actually the most accurate representation of a kid his age. But he doesn't receive criticism for stuff Marinette receives criticism all the time, even when doing something bad wasn't in her intentions. I would rather want them to criticise his father Richard if they have to criticise someone but no way they'll get criticism cuz they are male characters.
Maxim Lavrov from The Kitchen is literally THE WORST main character I've ever seen in my life and I watched so much stuff. He is constantly stalking Victoria, his on-off girlfriend, literally 70% of times they had s*x that was because he literally forced her to do it even when she told him to let her go and that is seen as hot but actually that's r*pe, he stole her documents so she can't travel with other guy when they broke up, he poked holes on her tires to prevent her from leaving with someone else, he stole her medical records in hospital when she was pregnant to see if the baby was his, he spread rumours that she is dating their boss who's married and that she would date anyone who can buy her stuff, he fought his rival out of jealousy, he cheated on her twice with the same woman, he didn't want to do anything around their apartment and she had to everything herself when they got married, he didn't like her for being "too perfect", he dated the girl he cheated with the first time he broke up with Victoria and when karma did it's work and he got cheated on he pursued Victoria immediately as if he would actually date her again if he didn't break up with this girl and when Victoria didn't want to date him he blamed her for their relationship failing and he called her a gold digger, he always grabbed her by her hand forcefully and he was really rough with her when she didn't want to talk even when she was pregnant, he followed her everywhere ALL THE TIME and spied on her. I think only my mom and I can't stand him. Everyone else loves him on the fan page and everyone who's seen the show. They love him. The only consequence he suffered was when she broke up with him both times when he cheated but even in the end of the show they didn't get together but they were in good terms and they worked at the same place and he was allowed to take care of their daughter with her and he got a promotion too. Without even trying.
Shrek literally signed a contract to get rid of his family and I feel like I'm the only one who hated him in that movie, no one complains about that character downgrade cuz like how tf do you disown everyone you love and still get a reward in the end?!
Raymond, Robert and Frank from Everybody Loves Raymond are treating their wives horribly, no one said anything about them. They are all horrible, you don't know which one is worse. In fact, ELR makes abuse Debra, Raymond's wife, has to suffer from his family funny.
Fallon and Adam from Dynasty - Fallon always works on being a better person even when she breaks a vase while Adam kills people and all is forgiven
I'm sure there are a lot more other examples and these are just a few, but female characters ALWAYS suffer the consequences in stuff I watched. I don't remember ever seeing a female character cheating her partner and getting away with it, a male character is always forgiven for cheating after the female character is really hurt, she always forgives him and they are a happy couple. And don't tell me about rom com jerks who get the girl every time for treating her terribly. Also women in rom coms are shallow if they choose a hot tall bf but male characters can choose women who look like literal supermodels and that's totally not shallow. I just hate these stereotypes. "If male character did it they would get cancelled" I literally grew up watching male characters who never changed and those toxic ones ended up as a pop culture icons. It's a rare case when a male character's behaviour is called out.
Bish I literally had to watch people draw Chat Noir punching Ladybug and people saying he should do it in the comments and him getting praised when he yelled at her and that's totally fair from our fandom? That's not gender equality, that's misogyny.

*sigh* Too much talk about Lily's fav show.
Adult comedy enjoyer here and I'd say picking Family Guy over any other adult cartoon is a bad taste.
Ever since Shakespeare, adult comedy provide lessons or commentary for adults. Simpsons offer family lessons, South Park points to money vs morals dillema, Rick&Morty explains that hightech/magic won't cure whateven problems you've got until you try to fix your traumatised human brain, Moral Orel calls out on hypocrisity in general, giving hope that at least next generations might be better than their parents.
In all adult comedy there is a theme "we a society might be better". I don't see that in Family Guy.
For example: Peter gets stuck in middle of an ocean begging God to save him in exchange for his eternal faith - only to immediately ditch God and learn nothing. Or Peter ignoring his wife while she tries to elevate their marriage, cooking homedate dinner only to realise Peter doesn't give a damn and she'd still be with him. Or that both of them to entertain their fantasies k*dn*p and r*pe some random woman from the streets facing no consequences at all.
I have just one explaination why Lily might like Family Guy. She is Peter Griffin. And Mikayla is(?) her Lois Griffin. Both are forever assholes, never learning from their mistakes.
the thing about FG that is different about those shows, with the exception of the Simpson, is that they tell an overarching story and a clear defined purpose. the simpsons and FG are all about gag episodes with no real connection between each other, which LO has said many times is the kind of shows she prefers and shows with a narrative are just as bad as drugs (yes really). but FG has always been the edgier version of the simpsons so of course that LO would prefer that overall. it's not about quality, characters, narrative or even the humour. it's about the episodic gags, just a series of jokes without any major consequences for anyone. that's the one true model that she has followed religiously and can see it on everything she writes. that's why she doesn't care about continuity and pokemadhouse is entirely based on scenes that LO wants to see with no real connection to anything else, just like FG.

I like Mortasheen, one day I thought - imagine if Mortasheen got popular enough that people drew furry comics about Bioconstructs going to college and also they’re more human shaped. Then I thought about the Devil Birds, the Fact that a lot of Adult Swim shows involve Hell, and went “Mortasheen version of Family Guy involving the Seven Deadly Sin Devil Birds”. This is the result.
Wrath is a crochety old man, always going on about his warcrimes in a very “back in my day” tone.
Envy is one of those “kid characters” voiced by an adult man popularized by Stewie Griffin, speaks in an awful cockney accent and despite dressing like Oliver Twist is always on that damn phone.
Greed is rich. He would also be voiced by Seth McFarlane.
Lust, IDK why but I know for a fact her VA would be Kristen Schaal. She’d be like that one shipping episode of TAWOG but instead of mocking children and exposing them to inc/st shipping, we now remind grown adults to the fact that grown women can be obsessed with the sex lives of cartoon teens.
Pride is the Head Honcho, Big Boss, y’know, gets everything done and is kinda like the Father Figure to the group alongside a Sopranos type mob boss. Self Absorbed but I think he’d be nicer than other Peter Griffin types - if only because he fully believes everyone would die without him. Sounds like Gilbert Godfried and Has the most active sex life out of the entire cast.
Gluttony is the only other woman in the main cast, would probably get all the jokes these shows give to older woman who aren’t conventionally attractive. Despite her chef outfit, she never cooks and acts as the fixer - ie she eats most of the problems of the week. Probably has the most backstory and hidden depth out of the whole cast.
Sloth does nothing on screen, all their exploits are just discussed, so they’re like  Plank from EEnE+Maggie from the Simpsons. Everyone loves them, and hates them, but they never speak and every time they “move” it’s offscreen with stock footstep sounds.

Bob Belcher [3] / CV: H. John Benjamin [4] The owner of Bob's Burgers and the patriarch of the Belcher family. He is barely avoiding a deficit due to an unending series of misfortunes and poor managerial skills [5].모범택시2 다시보기 9회 9화_10회 10화 시즌2 누누
He is a sensible, determined, and diligent family man, but has the downside of caring more than necessary when his family leaves the restaurant during business hours to do other things. As the head of the family, he always tries to lead the children on the right path, but he often shows himself to be unreliable. He always tries to maintain a positive attitude and takes on the challenges of life with passion and sincerity. He stands in stark contrast to the 모범택시2 다시보기 9회 9화_10회 10화 시즌2 누누stereotypical American sitcom fathers, who are portrayed as unconceived and stupid, such as Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin.
He has terrible management skills as described above, but his cooking skills alone are outstanding.[6] The evaluation that the burger is delicious often comes out in the work, and when he made it with his intention, in most cases, the burger he made received rave reviews.[7] He has a severe blood phobia, such as getting dizzy just thinking about blood and fainting at the sight of it. His son, Gene, has an inherited allergy to crayfish.[8] 모범택시2 다시보기 9회 9화_10회 10화 시즌2 누누
He often practices ventriloquism by talking to and conversing with dolls or objects.[9] He has a fanatical obsession with Thanksgiving itself, so he talks a lot with the turkey or turkey cooker in every Thanksgiving episode (lots of laugh-guaranteed episodes). She likes romantic events and spontaneous singing. She seems to be the most common-sense member of the family, but her mental cords are cut off and she runs out of control and is stubborn at times, tiring her entire family. She previously had her band, The Ta Tas, during her high school years with her sister Gail. She loves horses and is a fan of the anime The Equestranauts [16], and has an imaginary horse friend, Jericho [17]. She is the most fan-popular of the Bob's Burgers characters. He has such poor concentration that his ADHD is strongly suspected, such as saying something that doesn't fit the flow of conversation at all every time, or completely forgetting even the simplest errands.[18] He always carries an electronic keyboard and records conversations at any time, or makes laser sound effects or fart sound effects (…), but sometimes cases are solved thanks to this recording function. He also appeared as a maritime rescue worker in a movie, but he said that he became what he is now after consuming ice cream, etc. [27] Mort / CV: Andy Kindler Along with Teddy, he runs a funeral home next to Bob, a regular customer of a hamburger restaurant. He lives quite wealthy to dispose of and use furniture [28] that came out at a low price after the funeral, but he is a lonely person due to the nature of his job as a mortician. The bountiful top is actually a wig. Jimmy Pesto / CV: Jay Johnston[29] The owner of Jimmy Pesto's Pizzaria across from Bob's hamburger shop. October Halloween Movie Fest Day Six:
Today’s movie was The Frighteners, an old favorite of mine. It’s a little too goofy for the dark tone and a little too dark for the goofy tone, but I love it anyway. Michael J Fox is always fantastic, love the music, and I am an absolute sucker for stories involving characters seeing things nobody else can, and out-of-body experiences. A good fun time with enough depth and feelings to sink my teeth into, and the whole abandoned hospital sequence reminding me of Silent Hill doesn’t hurt. Although it came out in 1996 so any possible influence was the other way around. And thusly I have completed the trifecta of 90s horror-ish movies with a show resembling Unsolved Mysteries (I looked it up) explaining the backstory. Achievement unlocked!
I think I am due to spend a night or two trying movies I haven’t seen, though. We’ll see how I feel tomorrow, but definitely over the weekend.
Treehouse of Horror 6 (Attack of the 50-Foot Eyesores/Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace/Homer3) clocks in at rank 4 for me; my list now goes 1, 5, 4, 6, 3, 2. Nightmare has some genuine creeps, but mostly this one is more funny/conceptually interesting than Spooky. So I ranked it below the ones that are just as nostalgic but more spooky. It’s also the first one to drop the full framing device and just do a quick opener; I bet the commercial breaks got longer that year.
And it’s the first episode of The Simpsons I was aware of being new. I don’t remember how old I was when I started watching, but my family was into Myst, and I have a distinct memory of my then-college-aged brother describing the episode before it aired as “Homer and the boy go to Myst.” It was not as big a reference as he seemed to think it would be, but I always like seeing the Myst library complete with music cue.

I started trying to do some stats on who stars in THOHs, because I noticed Lisa doesn’t get nearly as much screen time as Bart and Homer. So far, Homer’s the clear star most of the time, with Bart in close second, and Lisa distant third. Marge and Maggie are lucky to be included so far. I think the writers found it easier to inflict horror and bad decisions on Homer and Bart, while Lisa tends to just come in trying to solve the problem, and more often than not shares the spotlight with Bart. She did get a fair amount of screen time in this one, though—co-starring in the first and second segments. I think we’ll get a Marge story and one or two Maggie stories within a week, though.
(And I have only been using gifs I already had, but might have to start making new ones just to properly illustrate the episodes. At least through THOH 16.)
And as for Teen Wolf, Abomination is so good. Stiles is the best and I love this turning point in Derek’s willingness to trust him, I love how much they are clearly laying out exactly what is wrong with Jackson, I… don’t love that everyone collectively decided not to tell Lydia everything making her so isolated that an illusion Peter cooked up in her head is the only person she can talk to, but it’s a good story anyway. My theory is that with Lydia being his only connection and how she brings him back, Peter not only sympathized enough to try using a carrot instead of a stick, but he also felt obliged to repay her afterwards by helping fix Jackson.
Anyway, I do not have the time or energy to ramble further Teen Wolf thoughts; if I have more I will make a shiny new post. Onward to day seven!

STUDIO CITY, CA – May 12, 2022 – Lily D. Moore (“Never Have I Ever”), Erica Durance (“North to Home,” “Open by Christmas”), Benjamin Ayres (“You, Me & the Christmas Trees,” “Detention Adventure”) and David DeSanctis (“Where Hope Grows”) star in “Color My World with Love,” a new original premiering Sunday, June 12 (9 p.m. ET/PT) on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries.
“Everyone has a dream to fall in love and get married one day, even people with disabilities,” said Lily D. Moore. “I hope viewers take away that ‘Color My World with Love’ is about painting your own story through your emotions and that we all have endless possibilities.”
Kendall (Moore) is a talented artist with Down Syndrome who creates beautiful paintings in the Impressionist style that reflect the reality of her subjects as she sees them. Thanks to the support of her mother, Emma (Durance), and grandmother, Bev (Karen Kruper, “The Wedding Veil”), Kendall is happy and thriving. Her life takes an exciting turn when she meets Brad (DeSanctis) in a cooking class at the local center for diverse learners and romance blooms. Emma has spent the last 22 years trying to protect her daughter and has reservations about Kendall and Brad’s new relationship, especially when it quickly moves in a serious direction. Not wanting Kendall to experience heartbreak, Emma tries to slow things down. With the help of Nic (Ayres), a longtime family friend of Brad’s, Emma slowly accepts that Kendall is ready to – and should – live her own life. In the process, Emma learns a lesson from Kendall about how to look beyond what’s in front of you and see the beauty that exists. And, just maybe, she finds herself ready to find love once again.
“Color My World with Love” is from Spell Love Road Productions Ltd. Jonathan Eskenas, Kimberley Bradley, Denielle Jackson and Orly Adelson are executive producers. The movie was produced by Charles Cooper. Peter Benson directed from a script by Pamela Wallace and Charlie Shahnaian & Shari Simpson.

Alec Guinness in The Bridge on the River Kwai (David Lean, 1957)
Cast: William Holden, Alec Guinness, Jack Hawkins, Sessue Hayakawa, James Donald, Geoffrey Horne, André Morell. Screenplay: Carl Foreman, Michael Wilson, based on a novel by Pierre Boulle. Cinematography: Jack Hildyard. Art direction: Donald M. Ashton. Film editing: Peter Taylor. Music: Malcolm Arnold.
Alec Guinness and David Lean made six features together, starting with Guinness's film debut in Great Expectations (1946). The Bridge on the River Kwai won him his only Oscar, but he seems to have been as much a good-luck charm for Lean as vice versa, since Lean miscast him rather badly in two otherwise successful films: Lawrence of Arabia (1962), in which he is rather embarrassingly non-Arab as King Feisal, and A Passage to India (1984), in which he plays Prof. Godbole with an accent that sounds more like Apu on The Simpsons than any actual Brahmin scholar. The part of Col. Nicholson in Bridge is a bit underwritten: We never really learn what the character's motives are for his eventual collaboration with the Japanese in building the bridge, and his moment of self-awareness as he says, "What have I done?" when he realizes the bridge is about to be blown up, is not adequately prepared for. But Guinness was a consummate trouper, even though he often clashed with Lean about the character, whom he wanted to be less of a stiff-upper-lip type than the director did. The movie won seven Oscars, including one for screenplay that was presented to Pierre Boulle, the author of the novel on which it was based. In fact, Boulle spoke and wrote no English; the screenplay was by Carl Foreman and Michael Wilson, who were blacklisted for supposed communist ties and were judged ineligible under Academy rules. Their Oscars and their screen credit were restored posthumously in 1984. Today, Bridge looks like a well-made entertainment with some major flaws: The moral dilemma that centers on Col. Nicholson, who wants to demonstrate the superiority of the British at the expense of actually serving the Japanese cause, feels artificially created -- surely some of the officers and enlisted men under Nicholson's command had something to say about the colonel's plans. Sessue Hayakawa deserved his supporting actor nomination as Col. Saito, though the part verges on stereotype. The role of the American, Shears (William Holden), who opposes Nicholson, seems to be cooked up to provide something for a major movie star to play: Note that Holden receives top billing, and that Guinness, even though he was nominated for and won a leading actor Oscar, is billed third. The trek through the jungle by Shears, Maj. Warden (Jack Hawkins), Lt. Joyce (Geoffrey Horne), and their attractively nubile team of female bearers takes up a lot of not very involving screen time. And the demolition of the bridge and the train crossing it seems oddly anticlimactic, owing to some complications in blowing up and filming an actual full-size bridge and train. Today, of course, miniatures and special effects would be used to make the scene more exciting, but even for an actual blowing up of a bridge and a train, a sequence that had to be got right the first time, the one in Bridge is actually less successful than the one done 30 years earlier by Buster Keaton in The General (1926).

I can’t say I was ever into acid house music, but I always loved this track. I heard it on the car radio the other day and it took me right back to my halcyon nights at the Hacienda in Manchester.
