When they meet by chance at an event Carter's boss is organising, Carter's sure he imagined all that sizzling chemistry...or was it mutual? This unlikely but meant-to-be romance sets off media fireworks on both sides of the Atlantic. In the current Alumni Notes section I read that Katelynn Streedmore has just been named the head dietician at the Jamesburg Assisted Care Facility, that Carl Mastrup and his wife Chelsea Marie have just welcomed their fifth bundle of joy, whom they’ve christened Blake-Jorlinda Mastrup, and that Becky Randale is still the Queen of England.

Stevenson (Right and background); Cover for "Imre" (Left)
1858 – Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson (d.1942) was an American author. He used the pseudonym Xavier Mayne.
Edward Prime-Stevenson was born in Madison, New Jersey. His father was a Presbyterian minister and a school principal; his mother was the offspring of a family of men of letters.
After studying law, Stevenson decided to become a writer and a journalist. In 1901 he moved to Europe, living in Florence and Lausanne, where he died of a heart attack in 1942.
In 1896 Stevenson published The Square of Sevens, and the Parallelogram: An Authoritative Method of Cartomancy with a Prefatory Note by Robert Antrobus that was supposedly written in 1735. However, it is believed that he was the author.
In 1906, under the pseudonym Xavier Mayne, Stevenson published the homosexually themed novel Imre: A Memorandum, but fifteen years earlier, Stevenson had published another milestone work, Left to Themselves (1891), a young adult novel described by its author as "homosexual in essence," the first such book ever published; and in 1908 a sexology study, The Intersexes, a defense of homosexuality from a scientific, legal, historical, and personal perspective.

1954 – The New Mexico Supreme Court rules that emission is not necessary to prove sodomy.

1960 – Olympic gold-medal winning diver and gay rights activist Greg Louganis was born in El Cajon, California on this date. Of Samoan/Swedish descent, Louganis first won a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. He was considered a favorite for two gold medals in the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow but was denied the chance with the American boycott of the games that year. Louganis won gold medals in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, two gold medals in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. He is widely regarded as the greatest Olympic diver of all time.
In the 1988 Seoul Olympics, he suffered a concussion after hitting his head on the springboard during the preliminary rounds while performing a reverse 2½ pike. He completed the preliminaries despite his injury, and went on to repeat a similar dive during the finals, earning the gold medal.
In 1994, after much speculation, Louganis announced he was gay and went on to perform in the Gay Games. In 1995, Louganis's autobiography co-written with Eric Marcus, entitled Breaking the Surface,it which he revealed he is HIV positive, was published. A 1997 made-for-television movie, "Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story," was aired on national television in the United States.
He also produced a video diary called Looking To the Light, which picked up where Breaking the Surface left off. In the years since his diagnosis was made public, Louganis has been an outspoken HIV awareness advocate.
In the October/November 2010 issue of ABILITY Magazine, Louganis stated that the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy is "absurd," "unconstitutional," and a "witch-hunt." He added that "gay men and women have been serving this country for years. . . [it's] basically encouraging people who are serving our country to lie to each other."
Since retiring from competitive diving, Louganis has done some acting, most notably appearing in an off-Broadway production of the Paul Rudnick play "Jeffrey." As a hobby, he competes at the top level of dog agility with his Jack Russell Terriers.
In 2013, Louganis announced his engagement to marry his boyfriend Johnny Chaillot, a paralegal. They married in October 2013.

1983 – Brian Michael Smith is an American actor known for his recurring role OWN's Queen Sugar as well as appearances on NBC's Chicago P.D., HBO's Girls and Showtime thriller Homeland.
Brian Michael Smith was born and raised in Ann Arbor, MI. He was raised by his mother, Ingrid Smith, an event planner and Ford Motor Company employee, with the support of his close-knit family. He and his mother spent his early years living with aunts, cousins and adopted brother.
Although assigned-female at birth, he self-identified and was perceived as male throughout his childhood. He challenged pressures to conform to his assigned role through performance and athletics.
While attending Ann Arbor Pioneer High School he played Defensive End and Fullback on the Boys Football team during the Fall and set records in throws and pole vaulting on the Girls Track & Field team in the Spring.
On September 17, 1999 during a game at Traverse City, became the First Female* Athlete to score a Varsity touchdown in the State of Michigan.
He studied acting and video production at Kent State University. Upon graduation he began teaching drama and media literacy to teens until moving to New York City to pursue his career in acting.
In 2017, Michael booked the role of Officer Antoine "Toine" Wilkins, on OWN's Queen Sugar. Toine also happens to be a Transgender man.

1990 – In 2012, Alex Morse was elected at 22 years old as mayor as Mayor of Holyoke, Massachussets.
A Holyoke native who became active in the community early on, he joined the city's Youth Commission at age 12. "I've always been very proactive and mature, and incredibly focused. Because I can talk intelligently and passionately about Holyoke...my age was never an obstacle. It never really mattered."
Morse is also gay. He started Holyoke High School's chapter of the Gay-Straight Alliance and founded the city's first GLBTQ non-profit organization, Holyoke For All, which hosts an annual "pride prom" and offers support groups, advocacy training, and scholarship assistance for GLBTQ youth.
When he took office on Jan. 3, 2013, he became the country's youngest openly gay mayor -- a label that, Morse said, is even less significant than his age. "I've been open and honest about [my sexuality]," he said. "I haven't found it to be problematic. Whenever you claim something as your own, no one can use it against you."

270 - Sister Act (Patreon Selects)
Tumblr media
All January we'll be doing a series we call Patreon Selects with episodes chosen by members of our sponsor-level tier on Patreon (and they'll be sharing their Oscar origin stories too)! First up is 1992's megasmash musical comedy Sister Act! Originally designed as a showcase for Bette Midler, the film became a starring vehicle for Whoopi Goldberg hot off of her Oscar win for Ghost. With Whoopi as an on-the-run lounge singer who hides out in a convent and turns the church's choir into a sensation, the film won the affection of audiences but not an Academy with a tricky relationship with comedy.
This episode, we talk about Whoopi's career from theatre breakthrough to movie star to Oscar host. We also talk about Dame Maggie Smith's two Oscar wins, the career of writer Paul Rudnick (who took his name off the film), and the divine Mary Wickes.
Topics also include Hook, Nuns Having Fun, and the MTV Movie Awards.

I was tagged by @metamatar to share the top 10 books I read in 2023. Unfortunately, I have to confess that I didn't actually read a lot of new books in 2023 because I fell very deeply into a Tolkien pit, so most of these are rereads that I fell into either because I was doing "fic research" or because I was suddenly struck by the need to revisit them. Adding a few lines on each of these books because I feel like it --
The English Understand Wool by Helen DeWitt - wry little book that you think is a novel about the difficult expectations of the publishing industry, but is a novel about growing up in a posh family, but is a novel about being brought up in a lie, but is a novel about being brought up in a truth which is a lie. It's great.
Farrell Covington and the Limits Of Style by Paul Rudnick - described this to a friend as "what if Psmith and Mike were gay and also American and also lived during the 70s" and I stand by this description.
Idlewild by James Frankie Thomas - maybe the only valid and accurate fandom (and internet) novel which is tbh not about fandom (or the internet) at all, but being queer and trans in the early 2000s. Kind of wild that we were all having these exact same experiences everywhere though!
Dr. No by Percival Everrett - I think this one topped both The Sympathiser and The Committed in being takes on espionage but with a satirical (racial) bent, albeit this being in conversation with Bond rather than in conversation with le Carre. Percival Everrett is wonderfully sharp and funny like the gloriously driest of wines.
Starve Acre by Andrew Michael Hurley - went on an English folk horror binge earlier this year as fic research/inspiration and this was arguably the best one of the crop. Atmospheric, beautifully written, a novel about grief, creepy trees and creepier hares. And, of course, the ghosts of the murdered.
The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien - I know the vast majority of you have been following me for more than a year so I feel like this one is self-explanatory at this point.
The Gold Bat & Other School Stories by P. G. Wodehouse - mildly cheating bc this is 3 novels in one, but they're so so iddishly satisfying as far as school stories go. The Gold Bat is defs a fave ft. (non-exhaustively) illicit ferrets, smoking, mafia-like school clubs, school rugby politics, town versus gown politics and irish revolutionary sentiment.
The Little Drummer Girl by John le Carre - best explained here.
Frederica by Georgette Heyer - this too was "research" (read: trying to construct what intelligent and scientific-minded children of the Enlightenment-ish era might have been like).
An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde - also "research" because I'm in my play within a fic authorial era. I forgot how clever Wilde is, just so pithy and beautiful and sharp. O to write like him etc.
I no stress tag @chamerionwrites, @cosmonauthill, @caracalliope, @indexcard, @zielenna, @nimmieamee (please don't feel obliged to do this or to make it as exhaustive, I'm just nosy) & anyone else who wants to do this!

I'm so happy to have finally found the shot of Paul Rudnick's script notes in the original Addams Family script.
(WRITER'S NOTE): We should get the sense, as much as humanly possible, that all this couple does is fuck each other. Their only want on this earth is to fuck each other, and they do. I understand this intended to be a kids' movie, but I cannot stress enough the importance of these two consistently teeming with frankly demonic horniness for each other. If we cannot agree on this, I walk. But you should know I already spent the money.

Why "Just Writing About Yourself" Isn't That Easy
Tumblr media
Writing about yourself seems like an easy task. After all, you have been yourself for as long as you know. However, in terms of the college application essay, this can be one of the most challenging and confusing tasks a high school senior does. The paper allows college admissions officers to get to know their applicants personally, beyond academics and extracurriculars. Because of this assumption, many students write essays summarizing an event that happened to them or their interests. Although these reports may seem to respond to prompts on the common app, they don't necessarily provide what colleges are looking for.
Warren's "The Rhetoric of College Application Essays: Removing Obstacles for Low Income and Minority Students" explains that the essay is argumentative rather than just a personal statement. It should be written to persuade your audience that you would fit their school well. This is one of the factors that makes it much more challenging to write. This is mainly due to how this type of essay, at least in my experience, is rarely practiced in school. In English class, written assignments are usually about summarizing a book or doing a research paper and never as personal as college essays are. Most students aren't used to writing solely about themselves in an academic setting. This process causes students to reflect on every characteristic about themselves to find something they think will make them appealing to colleges. While some students can immediately think of an event or trait that defines their entire character, others, like me, have been thinking about this essay for months and have yet to come up with an idea that feels good enough.
Many students do not know what colleges seek in their personal statements. G.P.A. requirements or S.A.T. scores are just numbers; you take them as they are. This is not the case with individual traits. Characteristics such as motivation, ambition, and social skills are unquantifiable. There is no way to measure or assign a grade based on how charismatic or passionate someone is. But these traits are just as valued as a high G.P.A. and S.A.T. by colleges. "Getting In," an article by Malcolm Gladwell, describes elite Ivy League colleges as "luxury brands." They are looking for students who fit into their ideal image of what a graduate from their school looks and acts like, and different schools value different traits. Writing becomes difficult when you have to think argumentatively and try to present characteristics that you're not even sure a college is looking for while still keeping it deeply personal.
The more I became aware of what colleges were looking for, the more impossible it became for me to write my essay. While I was sure I had at least some of the traits colleges search for, I couldn't think of any time when I displayed them interestingly enough to write about. I started by writing a list of everything interesting that happened in my life, hoping that I would write the idea and suddenly everything would click and I'd have my perfect essay.
I thought that to write a good essay, I would need to have experienced something so exceptional that the admissions officer would have never read anything like it. However, reading Paul Rudnick's "College-Application Essay" made me realize that even if someone has an unbelievable story or an incredibly traumatic experience they went through, it does not guarantee their essay will be good. Having a unique experience certainly could make the essay writing process more manageable. Still, if the writer comes across arrogantly or writes with irrelevant details and over-explaining, it can ruin the entire work. Rudnik's essay is a satirical piece, but it still captures the thought process of many applicants. Everyone is looking for the thing that will make them stand out among "all the other kids with perfect S.A.T. scores and Arizona rock-climbing epiphanies, or siblings who'd died in their arms."
The college application process can be terrifying when you first begin, mainly because you need clarification on everything. I didn't know what colleges were looking for, how to write the essay, or what topics would catch the reader's attention. When I began reading the articles I referenced, I felt my feelings of stress towards the paper grow. The task of writing my essay was incredibly daunting for me, and I would avoid doing any work towards it as I felt so unconfident about all my ideas. However, pushing off the essay for as long as possible would not get it written for me. I needed to start seeing the positives of the situation, and although the college essay was much different than expected, I'm now much more aware of what colleges look for.
While my essay is not yet completed, I feel a sense of confidence and motivation that was not there before. With the information I have learned from these articles, I have the resources and knowledge needed to write an essay that not just impresses colleges but impresses me and makes me confident that I will be seen beyond my grades.

Get to know you tag game!
Thanks to @siriuslythatbitch @r33sespieces and @mean-whale-writes for tagging me in this!
Favorite color: dark jewel tones, particularly ruby red and royal blue.
Current reading: I’ve got Playing the Palace by Paul Rudnick currently queued up, and a bunch of fics that I’m subscribed to updates on, but I don’t really have a current fic I’m obsessed with.
Last Song: Oh god, I can feel the judgment. Keep Holding On by Avril Lavigne. It came up on my Spotify.
Last Series: I’m probably the last person to watch it, but Mr. Snitch and I have one episode left of Stranger things. Also watched the first episode of the Great British Bake Off.
Last movie: Uhhhhh..... Oh! Mr. Snitch and I went to see The Invitation in theaters a few weeks ago. Otherwise, it’s almost certainly some kid’s show. I think it might be part of Up? Or... we were watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but I wasn’t *particularly* watching those.
Currently working on: The last (!!!) chapter of one last time (never enough), finishing a Jilytoberfest fic, finishing my Rare Pair fest fic (omg why did I turn this into a multichapter), and first wizarding war fest fic! Behind that is Ignite, One More to Love, What We Do To Get By, and Summer Boys.
Tagging: @fuckboyregulus @mppmaraudergirl @mabeltothknows @blitheringmcgonagall @therealrjlupin @elder-millennial-trash @greyeyedmonster-18 @quietlemonhush @second-sister @krethes (Is there a number I’m supposed to reach or am I just tagging???) and anyone who feels like doing it!
