Park Mae-Yi from Run On is asexual!
#RUNONWEEK Day Two: Harold...
Our pragmatic Park Mae-yi, who covers a wide range on the LGBTQIA spectrum.
As a queer person, I don't really have the words to say how much I appreciate seeing someone like myself reflected on the kdrama screen. What could have been a single blink-and-you'll-miss-it throwaway line was expanded upon in a small and thoughtful way, taking on so much more personal meaning. Isn't it amazing how impactful a few lines of dialogue can be?
long post incoming...
Okay, so I've been watching a lot of kdramas (or by extent Asian dramas) since March 2020, and there were a lot of characters who were so queer coded (or just had a fruityness to them)?? Anyway, so here's a list
But let's start with some canonically queer characters in mainstream dramas, shall we?
Park Mae Yi (Run On) - is ace and talks about her asexuality early on in the show
Go Ye Joon (Run On) - is gay and outs himself in the end, has a talk with another character about the discrimination and struggles of being gay
Ma Hyun Yi (Itaewon Class) - is mtf transgender, and while her being a cook is her main story arc, her confidence and pride of being trans is important too
Hikari Kuina (Alice in Borderland) - is mtf transgender and an absolute badass fighter as she grew up learning martial arts
Jung Seo Hyun (Mine) - is lesbian and (like every woman in this drama) an incredible independant badass
Now that we have that out of the way, let's move on to the actual queer-coding:
Seo Moon Jo (Strangers from Hell) - okay, he may be a psychopath and a serial killer BUT he calls Jongwoo 'babe' every chance he gets, and immediately threw his strategies out the window for him, so I declare him gay
Seo In Woo (Psychopath Diary) - again, similar to Moon Jo, the homoerotic tension of obsessive love is STRONG, and in his case, In Woo and Dong Sik are even mistaken as a couple at some point, he's definitely gay
Oh Mi Joo (Run On) - she just gives me bisexual wife energy, especially when you consider her chemistry with Dan Ah
Jang Bong Hwan / Queen So Young (Mr. Queen) - considering their souls are trapped in the same body, and Bong Hwan actually falls in love with the king at some point, they definitely fall into the genderfluid and queer spectrum
Han Se Ju (Chicago Typewriter) - like with Mi Joo, I have no actual reasoning other than vibes, and Se Ju just gives me incredible chaotic bisexual vibes, also his character is basically in a polyamorous relationship that's disguised with some bromance
Jang Man Weol (Hotel Del Luna) - okay, you cannot tell me that somebody who has been alive for 1300 years and is as flirty and cheeky as Man Weol is straight, she definitely falls on the mspec spectrum as well
So Mun (The Uncanny Counter) - again, this is based off vibes, but So Mun feels like a closeted bisexual kid (and boy am I speaking from experience here lmao)
Lee Yeon (Tale of the Nine Tailed) - this man is not only an ancient god, but a fruity god at that. One, he has that bromance chemistry with his best friend, second his true love is kind of split into a male and a female soul if I remember correctly?? that's kinda queer
Wen Kexing and Zhou Zishou (Word of Honor) - I'm putting them together because they're technically canon in the source material, but their chemistry in the drama is still off the charts
Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji (The Untamed) - again, they're gay in the novel but are demoted to "platonic soulmates" in the drama
Wen Qing (The Untamed) - my queen and her (not subtle) hatred for men flirting with her~ she gives me lesbian vibes and you cannot change my mind
Lu Yao and Qiao Chusheng (My Roommate is a Detective) - I don't know if this has a novel, but considering their immense chemistry, an incident of Yao introducing himself as Chusheng's boyfriend, and their overall vibes, they both give me bisexual vibes
Shang Xirui and Cheng Fengtai (Winter Begonia) - aside from the cinematography of this masterpiece, both Xirui and Fengtai are very queer, and canon in the novel
Rizuna Ann (Alice in Borderland) - she's giving me girlboss-lesbian-who-will-outsmart-you vibes, especially after her and Kuina became ~closer friends~ and solved the last murder case
#RUNONWEEK | day two: harold...
Park Mae Yi
Seongyeom probably thought Mae Yi being asexual meant that she wouldn’t want to be in a romantic relationship. She identifies as asexual but she’s not aromantic. She is comfortable with romance and dating someone. She represents a wide range of the spectrum. Asexuality doesn’t mean just one thing. Sexuality is complex and personal and is different for everyone.
It stuck out to me that when they first met Ji Hyun asked Mae Yi if she was okay with dating men. Even though he fell in love with her at first sight he didn’t automatically assume that she would be straight or that she’d date him. He was considerate of her feelings and made her feel safe before he even knew her.

Places to Visit:
1.) Chiang Mai: Beautiful temples and stunning scenery
Chiang Mai, known as the ‘Rose of the North’, is the hub for visitors traveling to northern Thailand. It is popular for misty, jungly mountains, lush rainforest, elephants, and a relaxed vibe...
There are more interesting activities that can be added to your itinerary, such as an experience at Elephant Nature Park, Thai cooking classes, zip-lining in a virgin forest, or a Thai massage. If you visit in November, don’t miss Chiang Mai's Yi Peng Lantern Festival. If your schedule allows, extend your tour to nearby cities, Chiang Rai and Pai.
5.) Phuket - An island paradise...
Phuket Province is located in Southern Thailand. It is the biggest island of Thailand and sits on the Andaman Sea. The nearest province to the north is Phang-nga and the nearest provinces to the east are Phang-nga and Krabi.
Phuket has a large Chinese influence, so you will see many Chinese shrines and Chinese restaurants around the city. A Chinese Vegetarian Festival is held there every year. While the Chinese community is quite big, there are many other ethnicities bringing all their traditions and festivals from all over the world to Phuket.
Being a big island, Phuket is surrounded by many magnificent beaches such as Rawai, Patong, Karon, Kamala, Kata Yai, Kata Noi, and Mai Khao. Laem Phromthep Viewpoint is said to feature the most beautiful sunsets in Thailand.
4.) Bangkok — Thailand’s Dynamic Capital...
Thailand’s capital and the top gateway city. It boasts plenty of attractions to keep you busy.
For those interested in learning more about Thailand's splendid architecture and temples, the Grand Palace, Wat Arun, and Wat Pho are must-see attractions.
Those who want to enjoy colorful nightlife should not miss Khao San Road. You can also take a boat trip along the Chao Phraya River to experience local life.
No matter whether you like shopping or not, you should pay a visit to explore a local market, such as Chatuchak Market, Amphawa Floating Market, or Mae Klong Railway Market.

“Emotional Support Character”
Park Mae Yi from Run On
While I certainly have head-canons about some characters in kdramas to be asexual I don't think we have actually had a canon character who says they are ace (or if it has been it's not been that positive... like most minority roles in kdramas unfortunately). Park Mae Yi talks openly about being asexual and it's done really well. I had actually dropped the drama after the first two episodes as the pace and the story if Run On doesn't really appeal to me... but once the ace community started to buzz about this character I had to pick it up again.
And she actually dates and talks about how some ace people actually are romantically attracted to people and it's just said like it's no big deal and you know... it feels refreshing. I am very used to ace rep being young people who feel broken or are figuring things out and it's always so focused on how we don't experience sexual attraction and we don't want sex and the feeling that no one can love you because of it is great and important and all of that.
But to see character who are just open and proud being ace, it's just a normal part of their life and they are just dating and shit... yeah, I like that a lot. We need more ace characters that are like that for people who figured who they were a long time ago and don't feel broken anymore. Because I don't only want to experience being sad and broken through ace characters and their stories. I want them to be happy with who they are and fall in love if they want to and just live their lives.
And Park Mae Yi is giving me that. She is just herself and she takes no shit for it, while also not making that much deal about it.

#RUNONWEEK Day Six: Aaron Sorkin Horror Movie
Who do you think will end up living with me forever?
It’s me. Myself.
I really want to get along with myself.
I don’t want to love myself too much, but I don’t want to be too hard on myself either.
I think it’s important to work hard on keeping a good balance.
These lines from Mi-joo effectively encompasses one of the main themes of Run On, and are a major part of why I wanted to put together this set of Working Women. These women (and all of the other women!) strive to find the balance between themselves and the world around them.

What is Loy Krathong, Thailand's Festival of Lights?
What is Loy Krathong, Thailand's Festival of Lights?
Loy Krathong is one of Thailand's most enchanting and the second best-known festival after its New Year's festival Songkran.
The Festival is held annually all over the country, as well as parts of Laos and Myanmar (Shan State) where it is called Tazaungdaing.
Read on and find inspirations for how you can experience Loy Krathong as fully as possible.
What is Loy Krathong?
Krathong is a Thai term which refers to a piece of banana trunk decorated with flowers, banana leaves, candle and incense sticks.
The word Loy means to float in the Thai language. When put together, those two terms simply mean floating banana trunk festival. Modern krathongs are mostly made out of bread or Styrofoam.
But Styrofoam krathongs are sometimes not allowed as they pollute the water and they are difficult to decompose.
Bread Krathongs are more environmentally friendly as they are biodegradable and in most cases eaten by fish.
Why do Thai people want to float a krathong?
There are many stories regarding how the festival originated. One of the versions is that Thai people have long been closely involved with rivers for ages as Thailand is an agriculture based country.
This means rivers are like their own blood veins. And to show respect to the river, basically the goddess of the river called Pra Mae Khongkha, Thai people decided to make a Krathong to worship and ask for forgiveness.
The Thais now also see it as a time to wave goodbye to misfortune, wash away sins of the past year, and make wishes for the coming year.
When is Loy Krathong celebrated?
Loi Krathong takes place on the evening of the full moon of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar.
In the western calendar, this usually falls in November. The exact date is announced a month before the festival.
Hence the following dates are not confirmed dates. They are the full moon days on which the festival is based.
Loy Krathong Dates:
19 November 2021 to 21 November 2021
Where to celebrate Loy Krathong?
Loy Krathong is celebrated all over Thailand. You can go and enjoy the festival almost everywhere in the country where it has water.
However, there are certain places which hold the festival in a much bigger scale. And our recommendations are Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, and Bangkok.
Located in the central of Thailand, Sukhothai is believed to be the birthplace of Loy Krathong, and is still one of the best places to experience the joyous festival.
Loy Krathong in Sukhothai is celebrated for five days. In addition to magical floating lights, there are beauty contest, parades, folk music performances and light and sound shows.
Nearly all the festivities take place in Sukhothai Historical Park (the old city).
If you want to see Loy Krathong in Sukhothai, remember to book hotels well ahead of time as it is a popular tourist destination with a limited number of hotels.
Sukhothai Historical Park
Chiang Mai is where Loy Krathong meets Yi Peng, a lantern festival celebrated alongside Loy Krathong. A
s the largest city in northern Thailand, Chai Mai is known for its flying lanterns rather than its floating offerings.
People who visit Chiang Mai during the few days of the festival can also enjoy some of the city's most incredible parades, firework display and traditional art performances in public places.
Sky lanterns in the street of Chiang Mai
Tips For Yi Peng in Chiang Mai:
1. Book your accommodation in Chiang Mai with as early as possible. Prices soar as the festival draws near.
2. Arrive at the Lanna Duthanka Buddhist Center in Mae Jo University early to get a good spot. Although the praying ceremony and lantern release will only take place in the evening, the place gets incredibly crowded. 4 pm onwards would be a good time.
3. If you indeed arrive early, there will be a lot of waiting time under the sun. Bring some sun block, food and drinks. You wouldn't want to move from the spot you came so early to guarantee.
4. If you're going to Wat Phan Tao or other temples before the lantern release, do not bring your lantern with you! They are not allowed inside the temples.
5. Bear in mind that this is a religious event. Keep quiet during the prayers prior to the lantern release (around 1 hour).
6. Make sure to cover shoulders, knees and chests if you want to explore the temples. Don't wear tank tops, shorts, or anything revealing.
Apart from Sukhothai and Chiang Mai, Bankok is also a great Loy Krathong destination.
The city boasts many ponds and waterways in public parks where families, friends and lovers gather and set off their krathongs.
Watching the route that a krathong takes is a popular way for couples to predict what the future holds for their relationship.
Wat Arun and Wat Yannawa are also good options for launching krathongs down the Chao Phraya River.
Advice: Buy krathongs made of natural materials, including banana leaves, banana tree bark, spider lily plants and bread, instead of Styrofoam, glossy paper and brightly hued petals.
A young couple making a wish & ready to let the lantern go
1. The four components of a krathong are symbols of Buddhism. The candle is a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. The joss stick is a symbol of purity and sympathy.
The flower represents worship of monks who are disciples of Buddha. The worshipping item is used to make merit for deceased ancestors.
2. Strands of hair, nail clippings or even bits of clothes that one doesn't use anymore are often put into a krathong to get rid of the bad stuff of the past.
3. Coins are added to krathong to bring wealth and as a way of making merit.
4. For the romantic at heart or young couples, Loi Krathong is the time to make a wish for happiness together.
5. According to a survey done by a certain condom company, Loy Krathong is the festival, second to Valentine's Day, when teenagers lose their virginity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How to enjoy Loy Krathong Festival in Bankok?
A: There are lots of things you can do to enjoy the festival in the capital of Thailand. Below are four ways to maximize your Loy Krathong experience in Bankok:
1. Roam a public park
Most public parks in Bangkok are close in late night. However, during Loy Krathong , many parks are open for the festival. So this is a good chance to enjoy the park at night and there are no entrance fees for each park and for floating your krathong as well.
2. Book a riverside hotel
This is possibly the most exclusive and luxurious way to enjoy Loy Krathong Festival. There are many riverside hotels in Bangkok, ranging from five-star hotels with spectacular river views to the affordable ones that might not be located next to the river bank but close enough to see the view.
3. Book a cruise tour
A river cruise tour is one of the best ways to really get into the heart of the festival by literally floating in the river! There are plenty of river cruises in Bangkok. Most of them will offer you a buffet on board, drinks (sometimes exclude), Thai traditional performances and live music performance.
4. Visit riverside malls
This can be the cheapest and most entertaining way to enjoy Loy Krathong. Because it's most likely that you don’t have to pay any fees like an entrance or activities fees. Without those barriers, you will feel the spirit of the festival more as well as the crowd!
Q: What's the difference between Loy Krathong and Yi Peng?
A: Loy Krathong and Yi Peng are two similar but actually different festivals. First, their most important difference is perhaps where they're celebrated. Yi Peng is only celebrated in the north of Thailand, and its most elaborate celebrations take place in Chiang Mai.
Loy Krathong, however, is observed all over the country. The second difference is the lanterns that are used and how they’re floated.
For Loy Krathong, floats made out of banana trees, bread or Styrofoam are set off in water. But for Yi Peng, lanterns are made of bamboo, and fuel cells.
They are launched to the sky rather than the water.
Q: How can I get a krathong?
A: It’s easy. You can buy one. You can find them at the street vendors, or if you are a guest of a hotel, it surely can offer you one. Another way to get a krathong is make one yourself. During the festival, most hotels in Thailand offer their guests chances to make krathong themselves.
Q: How do I float a krathong?
A: After you have your own Krathong, head to the water source – most likely rivers, ponds, lakes or even pools! Then light up the candle and incenses, make a wish and let it go!
Q: Do I need tickets for the Yi Peng festival?
A: The festival takes places in various parts of Chiang Mai and is free for all. Traditionally, there are two major lantern releases each year: a paid event in English and the free public event for locals.
The paid event is not run by the government like the rest of the festival and is usually held before or after the actual festival.
Tickets cost $100 per person, and it takes place outside the city center.
The benefit is that there are no crowds and there are explanations of the event in English. - IndoChinaOdysseytours.com
