Premier League opinion: Predicting the top-4 for the 2019/20 season
One of the major draws for the Premier League is the fact that it is the most competitive league in Europe but there’s always room for a few surprises as we saw with Leicester City a couple of seasons ago, and Chelsea making just as impressive a run after finishing 10th the season before.
Nothing is ever set in stone in the Premier League. Last season, Manchester City became the first team since Manchester United in 2007/08 to defend their Premier League title and we had one of the best title races since the 2011/12 season as it went to the last day.
Liverpool and Manchester City were two of the most dominant teams in Europe and only a point separated them last season. Not to mention, both hit a gargantuan amount of points with 97 and 98 respectively. Let’s now predict what the top four might look like. Potential transfers are not indulged.
1) Liverpool
This might be a controversial take but the current European Champions have various factors in their favour. They haven’t made too many signings but they have the likes of Rhian Brewster and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain to look forward to this season.
Their motivation to win that elusive Premier League is also far greater than any other club. They have kept hold of their best players and have the easier fixtures to begin the season as well.

2) Manchester City
It cannot be emphasized enough as to how much City are going to miss Vincent Kompany. Titles are won by small margins and for years, their captain has been at the helm when it has mattered the most.
City look invincible at times but the likes of David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho are in their last legs. Their priorities will also be the elusive Champions League title and for this reason, City might not make it three on the trot.
They also have a tougher fixture list to begin with, and one tiny wrong step could prove to be costly.

3) Tottenham Hotspur
Mauricio Pochettino’s Spurs have consistently been in the top-4 for the last couple of seasons. With a very important addition in Tanguy Ndombele, Spurs should have just enough to do more than their competitors.
All of their top-4 rivals in a period of transition and aren’t as stable as Spurs. The new stadium will also be a massive burden off their shoulder, which could boost the club overall.

4) Manchester United
Manchester United are under high pressure to make it into the top-4 because of their history. Another season like the last one is not going to be acceptable.

Son Heung-Min is set to return to action for Tottenham Hotspur after playing for South Korea at the Asian Cup.
The winger, playing in his second international tournament this season, could not avert a shock defeat for his country in the quarter-finals as they were beaten 1-0 by Qatar on Friday, and Son needs to be back in Mauricio Pochettino’s XI as soon as possible.

Spurs have struggled without Son.
Of course, Harry Kane and Dele Alli both sustained injuries at the worst possible time with Son already away, leaving Pochettino without his three most potent attacking weapons.
He had been on an electric run of form before his departure to the United Arab Emirates, scoring eight goals and providing five assists in just 10 games, as per Transfermarkt.
Spurs lost 1-0 to Manchester United in his final game, and have since been knocked out of two cup competitions without the winger.

A 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday saw them eliminated from the FA Cup, while they were beaten by Chelsea in the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Thursday, losing on penalties at Stamford Bridge.
Son, during his time at the Asian Cup, drew a blank for South Korea, but he did provide two assists in the final game of the group stages against China as they won 2-0. Perhaps unfortunately for Spurs, Son played 89 minutes against China, 120 against Bahrain – in which his nation won in extra time – and 90 in the defeat to Qatar.
Pochettino, per the London Evening Standard, expects to have Son available for the midweek clash with Watford but unsurprisingly revealed that the winger is exhausted: “He’s so tired, played three games. Very tough games. Not too much energy today, but we hope he’ll be available on Wednesday.”
Fatigue be damned
Son simply has to start against Watford.
He may be tired, but an exhausted Son is better than a fully-fit Georges-Kevin N’Koudou.
The 23-year-old turned in an atrocious display against Palace, despite earning his chance in a cameo against Fulham after Son’s departure; he came off the bench to provide the assist for Harry Winks’ dramatic late winner.
Son was sorely missed against both Chelsea and Palace, however, with no player able to offer his pacey, driving runs on the counter.
Fernando Llorente has played reasonably well without him, but it is very clear that he does not have the required ability to lead the line for Spurs for a considerable period of time.
Now Son is back, he should be restored to the striking position against the Hornets and give Spurs the cutting edge they have brutally lacked.
It is, of course, a tough ask to expect him to hit the ground running but with the lack of alternatives in the squad, Pochettino simply does not have another option.

The race for third in the Premier League just opened up
The real cost of not strengthening your squad could become evident if Spurs slide down the table in the two months while Harry Kane is injured. Of course the cost of building a new stadium is prohibitive but then you never win anything when you don’t buy a lottery ticket.
Arsenal and Chelsea play each other this weekend at the Emirates, a big test for both team’s hopes of Champions League football. A draw would suit United and Spurs best.
On the superbru front Tyron drops 3 to 34th, while Dirk is in 60th (+7) spot. I sit in 43rd (-6). Jedimaster is the winner for last round with a score of 15.5.

Southampton 2-1 Tottenham: Spurs without a win in four PL games
Mauricio Pochettino returned to his first English club, Southampton to implement his mission ban and sat next to his chairman Daniel Levy. Still, he wished he was already in Madrid. Pochettino had alluded to returning to Spain this week, and in the Premier League his team at least pretended to let him go.
From the fact that they were on the edge of a challenge, this was their third defeat in four games, the strange match was the draw to Arsenal last week. From the goal of becoming a champion, they fight to stay in the top four. Manchester United can earn points on Sunday.
All this will astonish Pochettino. They are fortunate enough to end with ten men after Moussa Sissoko with the neck against Nathan Redmond and got a yellow card. He was angry with his players after the defeat in Burnley. But this was much worse. Because the team of Sean Dyche made life terrible, Spurs played well and lost a fascinating match. This came closer to the stereotypical impulse implosion. After having fully controlled the game, they were seemingly completely undone by a tactical switch in halftime by Ralph Hassenhuttl, who brought Shane Long and Josh Sims up to 3-4-3.

It was all so unexpected, since the first half had all been Tottenham. He enjoyed his return and looked great in the first game for six weeks and played just behind the front two. While Spurs took the time to settle, it was Dele and Harry Kane who forced themselves on and made an opening target. Tottenham defended their own box when the pair tried to cross half of the field within seconds and put Spurs first.
A release to Dele was conducted to Kane, who advanced to the Southampton back three. But it was the beautiful run to create space through Him that attracted attention. Kane found him and he returned the compliment, with a delightful lofty return passage to Kane.
Soon after he would force Gunn to stretch and tip the ball with a strike from just outside the ball. Tottenham, with a succession of angles, had the strings firmly in hand without defeating their superiority. They would pay the price for that.

Pochettino's ability to adapt crucial following Tottenham star's comments on Kane
Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris insists the club will cope without the injured Harry Kane.
The England striker limped off at full-time after Spurs’ 1-0 loss to Manchester United on Sunday, and the BBC have confirmed he will be out until early March with ligament damage.
What’s the word?
Spurs are set to be without Kane for a significant period of time, with the striker due to miss the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Chelsea, potentially both legs of the Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund and a minimum of six Premier League games, including another encounter with Maurizio Sarri’s Blues.
Lloris, though, is confident that Spurs will be able to cope; the club currently find themselves third in the Premier League, seven points ahead of fifth-placed Arsenal.
“We all know how important Harry is in our team, but he is not all of our team,” said Lloris. “Football is about the team and every player is ready to help the team.”
Quoted by FourFourTwo, Lloris said: “In football, during the season, you have ups and downs and you have to always adapt to those and we will see about ‘H’.
“But I think everybody is ready and the most important thing is the mind: being ready to fight, being ready to help, being ready to compete. It is better when you have all your best players on the field, but that can happen here or it can happen at other clubs.
“Every season is different. Every player is different. With or without him, we will see how we do. The most important thing is to prepare for the games as well as we can.”
Mauricio Pochettino finds himself in something of a quandary regarding the striking situation, as Fernando Llorente is the club’s only fully-fit forward.

Son Heung-Min is on international duty with South Korea, while Vincent Janssen is not in Pochettino’s plans, and it remains to be seen how Spurs will line up when they face Fulham this weekend.
Lloris added: “We will see for Fulham in the next game with or without Harry, with or without Son [Heung-min]. Throughout the whole team you have important players but the main thing is the collective.
“It is the only way to get trophies. It is not about one or two players, but, as you know, we all know the importance of ‘H’. We are still involved in all competitions, the main thing is to finish in the top four. We said this from the beginning and we don’t change our mind.”

The Spurs boss has had to deal with a number of injury worries this season and Spurs only truly dropped out of the title race on Sunday, with their loss to Manchester United leaving them nine points behind leaders Liverpool.
The game against Fulham comes at an opportune time; Spurs are expected to win regardless of Kane’s fitness, and it offers the Argentine the chance to experiment with his forward options.
The manager does not have long to get it right, however, as their next game after the Cottagers is Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
Tottenham hold a 1-0 aggregate lead going into that game, and we may well see Pochettino revert to a more defensive gameplan.
Whatever happens, Spurs fans do not appear to be hitting the panic button just yet, and are instead placing their faith in their manager finding a solution, as he has done so many times before.

"Absolute shambles", "Amazed" - Many Chelsea react to killer moment vs Tottenham
Chelsea fans have branded VAR a “shambles” after Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane scored a technology-assisted winner in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash.
The England international seemed to spring the offside trap in the first half, before being brought down in the penalty area by goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga in the area.
Referee Michael Oliver consulted VAR to check if Kane was offside and when it was ruled that he was not, he awarded the spot-kick, despite protests from Chelsea players.
An angle used during the live television broadcast of the game appeared to show that Kane was level with defender Cesar Azpilicueta, but manager Maurizio Sarri provided evidence after the game which contradicted that view.
Brandishing a laptop in his press conference, Sarri offered footage that showed Kane was the furthest man forward.
Add to that the fact that several supporters believe Kane hit the deck too easily, and it is perhaps understandable that Blues fans were not pleased…

Amazed @SkyFootball and pundits continually missed the point with last nights VAR decision. Regardless of which camera angle you look at, the linesman flagged for offside. Neither angle proved he made an error! Both show Kane slightly ahead yet they wrongly overruled the decision

In regards to VAR – how can you have so called experts sat in a room looking at a particular moment that’s under dispute in a match from multiple angles and still get it wrong? Kane was offside last night and our own footage proved it 😅 VAR needs more experimentation urgently

VAR clear and obvious error, for me Kane is offside others will say the opposite so not clear and obvious, don’t care how many times you look at it he is leaning forward in a offside position and to change that decision is ridiculous.

Who has missed the most chances in the Premier League this season? Here are the top 5!
For any team that has its eyes on the coveted Premier League trophy, it is important to have a proven goalscorer in the squad. No team can win trophies without having a strong attack and while scoring goals is easier said than done, most of these players often miss out on several chances than make a lot of us cry out in frustration. As per a report from the Daily Star, here are 5 players who have missed out on a lot of chances so far this season.
Christian Benteke and Mohamed Salah – missed 18 chances
The two players top the list when it comes to the number of chances missed. It is interesting that one player belongs to a club that has struggled while the other is being regarded as one of the best players in the league this season. A lot has been said about how Salah’s finishing needs work and this more than proves the same. However, unlike Benteke, Salah has actually managed to go out and net 22 goals in the league until now, which is the second-highest in the tally of league goals so far.
Alvaro Morata and Harry Kane – missed 14 chances
Once again, Morata has blown hot and cold throughout the season whereas Kane is the top scorer in the league at present. Yet, it is noteworthy that they have missed the same amount of chances. Kane clearly averages a lot more shots per game when compared to Morata and the Chelsea man has just failed to hit the ground running ever since he completed a sensational summer move to join them last year. Kane, on the other hand, continues to go from strength-to-strength for Spurs.
Sergio Aguero and Alexandre Lacazette – missed 12 chances
Lacazette was a pivotal figure for the Gunners when he joined them last summer but his influence has deteriorated over the last few months or so. His goals have dried up and the fact that he is third on this list is certainly no consolation either.
Aguero, on the other hand, has made quite an impact everytime he’s started and can pull the strings effectively even when he comes off the bench. He may have missed all these chances but he is third in the top-scorers list with 21 goals so far in the league this season.
Gabriel Jesus – missed 11 chances
Jesus has made quite a splash for Manchester City and is easily regarded as one of their most promising young stars. But he seems to have missed quite a few changes this term. However, the player is set to return from a recent injury soon and with the season set to enter the last quarter, Jesus will be looking to make up for lost time and get his name on the scoresheet more often.
Richarlison – missed 10 chances
Richarlison has played an instrumental role for the Hornets this season and has been one of their best players by a mile. Although he is essentially a midfielder by trade, the young Brazilian has taken charge of most of Watford’s goalscoring attempts and he is even deservedly regarded as one of the best young players in the Premier League at present. Missing 10 chances is not too big a deal and if he continues to play this way, Richarlison has a bright future ahead of him.
