Sketches of Rue's "hottest outfit."
OSCAR MONTOYA, STILL NO DESCRIPTION, HOW COULD YOUUUUUUUUU?? Just that it's a gown, and possibly green and gold??
A lot of it was figuring out the proportions of an owlbear body, which is loosely based on a polar bear or penguin silhouette. Long torso, short legs, and short arms. Or like the Zora from Legend of Zelda-Breath of the Wild. I didn't want to make it too similar to a human, because the challenge was fun. Especially since the bust, waist, and hip lines were in different places.
Luna moth, to emulate Binx, since they were there to support her. Also Luna Moth colors were very similar to their fur color and they also seem to like pink! Just make a little darker so they don't stand out COMPLETELY in the darkness on the way to this secret meeting.
Stretch velvet, because their glamoured form tended to favor very tight and constricting clothes, so something a little more relaxed this time. Also OPULENCE.
A little less elaborate detailing, increased comfort. But don't sacrifice high quality.
Swooping neckline to SHOW OFF THOSE SHOULDERS AND NECK. ThIS IS REGENCY.
ALSO - Rue showed up to their meeting with the Seafoam Court IN THEIR HOTTEST OUTFIT. I'd have been "OMG Mistrex did you come from a hot date - what is this?? DEETS."
I realllllllly wanna draw Rue and Wuvvy at the ball. But I'll also be doing a colored version of the back of this dress too.

At first, you contemplated not answering the door. Images from last night flashed in front of you. the bars tour, someone flirting with you, grinding against each other on the dancefloor, him screwing you in the parking lot in the backseat of his car, and the walk back home under the rain. You rolled to your side and pulled the cover over your head.
In addition to being sore, you woke up this morning with a nasty flu you caught from last night’s walk. Not having any plans for the day, you spent most of it in bed.
You were about to doze off when the ring bell went on again. Unable to ignore it further, you gathered your remaining force, wrapped your shuddering body in your blanket, and left your bedroom. The effort made the room spin around you. “Whoever is there better have a valid reason to disturb me”. you groaned dragging your feet across your apartment.
Your jaw dropped when you saw who was at your door. “Eren?” You mumbled; voice hoarse.
Dressed in a dark blue three-piece suit, with his hair neatly pushed back, revealing his emerald green eyes, he looked like he was going to a formal dinner. You took your time admiring him.
If you were surprised to see him at your door, Eren on the other hand was frowning. “Are you alright?” He inquired visibly worried.
If you didn’t have a fever and your head wasn’t throbbing, you would’ve felt ashamed of the way you look. Your hair was going in different directions, your face was pale, bloodshot eyes with bags under them, and dry lips and to complete the look you were wrapped in a blanket twice your size. “Just a little sick”. You responded, wondering why he was standing in front of your door dressed like he was going to the Oscars. But mostly, you were wondering how did he get your address.
“Here, I brought you these”. He handed you a beautiful bouquet of pink tulips watching the weak smile that spread across your lips.
“Oh, hm, Thank you”. Still smiling, you reached to take the flowers from him. “Wanna come in?” you hazarded stepping out of the way to let him in. “Want something to drink?” You followed leading him to the living room.
“No, please, don’t bother yourself, I’m alright”. He urged. “I should’ve called before coming over. I’m sorry, I didn’t know you were feeling unwell”. He apologized. You waved his excuse walking into the kitchen when you started coughing.
Worried he followed you and made you lay on your couch. “Damn, your skin is burning”. He gasped when he touched your forehead.
“Don’t worry, it’s alright”. You attempted to get back on your feet.
“Please, relax. Let me handle it”. he smiled at you and made you sit back. Confused, you squinted your eyes trying to read his expression before he left the room. “Where do you keep your medics?” he asked minutes after coming back with a bowl filled with cold water and ice.
“There, second drawer”. You pointed at the corner cabinet. He nodded running the wet cloth across your face before leaving it on your forehead.
“Did you eat today?” He asked going through the content of the drawer.
“A piece of cake and some salad”. You responded.
“That won’t do”. he mused unlocking his phone and typing something. “You need to eat something warm”. Eyes still fixed on his phone, he handed you a glass of water and Ibuprofen. “Here, drink this”.
“There’s a soup left in the fridge. I’ll heat it and eat it when I start feeling the effect of the meds”. You downed the glass of water. “Please, you will be late for your appointment”.
“I’m already there”. He put back the cold fabric on top of your face.
It took you a while to understand what he meant. “Oh, fuck, I’m sorry, I completely forgot it’s today”. panicked, you sat straight looking at him. three days ago, Eren sent you a message asking you to accompany him to a concert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and you accepted. “I’m really sorry, Eren. I didn’t mean to”.
“Don’t worry, it’s alright”. He spoke gently cupping your face. “Now, lay down and leave this on. We need to get your fever down”. His thumb caressed your reddish cheeks. “I’ll go heat the said soup and make you some tea so that you can take coughing meds”. He followed, helping you settle.
You laid there, listening to him moving around your kitchen questioning if this was real or if your fever made you imagine things.
You woke up to the feeling of being tucked in bed. you don’t recall when you drifted off, your last memory was of Eren disappearing into the kitchen. Though you were not quite sure if he was even here, you called out his name.
“I’m right here”. he spoke in a hushed tone. “You need to get some rest. Don’t worry I’ll remain by your side”. A feeble smile broke through your face. This must be a pleasant dream, I better not wake up, you told yourself. You felt his hand against your burning skin. “The medicines should start working any minute now”. He added caressing your hair.
“Why?” you mumbled but he didn’t hear you. “Jean never did this to me”. your words caught him by surprise.
You covered your face with your forearm trying to hide from the ghosts from your past.
you took off your glasses and massaged your temple. After two weeks of hard labor, you finally finished your project. You checked one last time if you correctly saved the files on both your drive and laptop before closing it. in order to avoid upsetting your boyfriend, you always work on projects and assignments alone, which makes it even harder to finish in time. “Finally,” you whispered laying on your bed.
an hour later, you stepped into your bedroom, face flushed and wrapped in a fluffy towel. You grabbed a pair of fresh panties and fished for a t-shirt and cotton shorts from a second drawer. It was 9 am, Jean should be home any minute now, you finished getting dressed.
You were drying your hair when you heard the door. “I’m home”. You heard his footsteps approaching.
“I’m in the bedroom, honey”. You called. “Welcome home”. You greeted your boyfriend with a warm smile and arms wide open when you caught a glimpse of him. “Guess who has just finished her project”. You sing sang looping your arms around him.
“My sweet girl”. He responded smiling before pressing a couple of chaste kisses on your lips. “Good job”. He whispered against your lips.
“I can’t believe I’m finally done”. You hummed, sinking into your lover’s embrace. “I’m exhausted”.
“Me neither”. His hand sneaked under your shirt molding your skin and buried his face in the crook of your neck. “I missed you”. he breathed against your skin. Your heart fluttered at the feeling of his teeth grazing your pulse point, biting softly. “It’s been a long week, baby”. He rambled sucking on your skin. “I need you”. he growled rotating his hips against your body.
You needed him too you were drained. Between school, your homework, and the shores, you didn’t have time to rest. Plus, you didn’t get enough sleep last night. Jean’s hands were slowly caressing your asscheeks when you gently pressed your palms against his chest. “Jean, dear, I’m a little tired tonight”. You mumbled. “Can…”. You released a sultry moan when he pressed two fingers to your clothed core. “Jean… Ah, Jean, please, baby, I need to…”. Knowing he was not listening; you stepped back getting away from his grasp.
“What’s wrong, baby?” He inquired frowning.
“Can we… Can we please leave this till tomorrow, I’m knocked out, honey”. You stared back at him with pleading and half-lidded eyes.
“But it’s been a week”. He remarked caging you in place. He tilted his face to kiss you again.
“I know, baby, and I’m sorry, but I only slept three hours last night”. You explained looking down. “I can barely stand on my feet”. You muttered still staring at your feet. “I promise, tomorrow,” you brought your eyes back to his face. “I’ll make it up for you”. you pleaded, noticing his facial expression.
“Get your filthy hands off me”. he slapped you when you reached to cup his face.
This is bad, you told yourself. “I’m sorry, honey, I’m truly sorry”. You breathed. “Tomorrow is Saturday, we can do whatever you want”. You let out trying to hold him back.
“I said get your fucking hands off me, whore”. He nudged you.
Your eyes widened in horror. “But Jean…” you hugged him from behind trying to calm him down. “Let’s get to bed, dear”. you spoke trying to sound as calm and soothing as possible. “I promise tomorrow we’ll…” you yelped when he reached for your hair and pulled you away from him ruffly.
“Are you deaf?” He screamed. “I fucking told you not to touch me”. he threw you against the wall. “A selfish bitch such as yourself has no right to touch me”. he gritted stepping closer. “You think that anyone would want someone as pathetic as you if I ever dump you?” he yanked you from your hair once again and made you get on your feet. “Where would you go if broke up with you? Back to your father’s house? You would stray if I leave you”. he hissed. It hurts, both the impact against the wall seconds earlier and him pulling your hair. But you know better than to make any noise. Just like with your father, it only gets him angrier and more violent if he hears you cry or utter the slightest sound. “No one wants you; you get it?” he waited for a response. “Do you understand?” He shouted, and you nodded frantically. “Didn’t you say you're tired?” He grabbed your jaw forcefully, staring down at you with hard eyes. “Or was it just a lie?” you desperately shook your head. “Then, fucking go to sleep”. He pressed his fingers further against your skin. “I’m going out”. he brought your face closer to his. “And don’t you dare ruin my night with your texts and calls”. He menaced. “I’ll do the world a favor and kill you if you do”. and he pushed you once again before slamming the door behind him.
“Jean would’ve snapped at me”. You whispered burying your face in your pillow. “He would’ve even hit me for forgetting about tonight”. Your voice was muffled by your pillow, so Eren didn’t hear the last part.
You winced at the contact of the ice bag with the bump on your forehead. You were facing the bathroom mirror inspecting your face and body. Jean didn’t come back home last night. He recently picked up the habit of spending the night out whenever you fought. The next morning, he comes home smelling like someone else or marked with either lipstick or hickeys, sometimes both. You left the bathroom wondering what is it going to be this time.
A tired sigh left your chest at the thought of seeing the man you love carrying the marks of another woman. At least, I don’t have any bruises on my face, you congratulated yourself, pressing the bag of frozen chickpeas against your forehead.
Minutes later, you were making coffee when you heard him entering the house. You tried to busy your mind with making breakfast, you did your best to ignore the way your body tensed when you heard his footsteps approaching and to pretend like you didn’t shiver when he cleared his throat.
“I’m sorry for last night, darling”. He patted your shoulder apologizing. “I admit it, I kind of lost it”. he pecked your temple. Unable to look up at him and note the hints of the night he spent in the arms of another one, you continued setting the table. “I brought you some fresh pretzels from your favorite bakery”. He added in a joyful tone. He wrapped his arms around your waist and brought you against him. “I also bought you chocolate and the book you wanted”. He kissed your hair.
“Thank you”. you replied in a hushed tone.
“You know that I love you, right”. at this rate, his voice was desperate.
“I know”. You voiced trying to swallow the lump in your throat. “I love you too”. You took the paper bags from him and set them on the kitchen table.
Helpless, he followed you like a lost puppy. “I spent the night at Connie’s, I swear”. You only hummed in response putting the pretzels in the bread basket. “You don’t believe me, do you?”
“I do”. you faked a smile looking at him. your eyes inspected the bite marks behind his right ear and above his collarbone. You swallowed hard trying to block your tears. “Of course, I believe you”. you put all your efforts into trying to sound natural. “Do you want some coffee?” you inquired still smiling.
“Stay with me, please, don’t leave me”. You tucked at his shirt.
“I won’t”. Eren promised, caressing your hair. Your fever was persisting.
“You’re so nice”. You purred nuzzling his hand. “Why are you being nice to me?” you wrapped your arms around his body. “I wish he was as nice as you”. You closed your eyes letting Eren’s comforting warmth envelop you.
Eren dipped the clothe in the cold water and whipped your face and neck. “It’s alright, go to sleep now. I’m here”. he voiced, still overthinking your words. Who was this Jean, he wondered. And mostly, what did he do to you? but what was worrying him the most was your fever. He grabbed his phone and sent another message. A reply came seconds later.
Eren spent most of the night trying to take you down your fever. He didn’t get to sleep until dawn. Feeling his presence next to you, you scooted closer nuzzling his neck. “I’m sorry”. You mumbled half asleep. He pressed his lips to your temple.
Before falling into a deep slumber, he made the decision to not ask you about the guy you mentioned earlier and to not question you about your past. He decided to let you choose whether you want him to know or not.

Sicktember #30
Prompt: Patient 0
Fandom/OCs: The Office (Sick Andy)
Words: 1550
Sicknario inspo: Character faking sick and character actually sick quarantined together from this post.
Author’s comments/background: A fandom I only write by request generally, but one that is always fun to revisit and good in a pinch for a writing challenge, since there’s so many characters. I have a love/hate relationship with Andy, and I’m not sure how great his characterization and dialogue is, but I suppose you all can be the judge of that.
~~~***~~~
It was the semi-annual HR training day, and the employees of Dunder Mifflin, Scranton branch all shuffled in looking as if it was their execution day. They showed up, though, every single one. Truancy on training day had been a huge issue for a long time, so the corporate HR bigwigs had implemented this policy years ago: Mandatory attendance on training day, no doctor's notes accepted. A no-show meant automatic enrollment in twenty-four hours (the equivalent of three working days) of makeup online training. It was a brutal policy, but an effective one. No one missed training day anymore.
All was normal until Andy Bernard showed up with a head cold from hell. Dressed to the nines as always, his clothes seemed to be the only thing holding him together. He was a sneezing, coughing, achy, miserable mess. The only thing that kept the rest of them from sending him home was the fact that he didn't have a fever. He would have insisted on staying, though, even if he was feverish. He had gone through all the trouble of getting here and he wasn't about to go home and do online training now.
The rest of the employees vehemently opposed him joining them in the training room, though, visibly shedding contagion as he was. They came to a compromise after much discussion: Andy would be quarantined in the break room with a laptop for the training and still get credit for attending without infecting everyone else, an arrangement everyone felt was satisfactory, even though Kelly, Angela, and Oscar kept giving Andy dirty looks and muttering about having to decontaminate the break room that evening.
Michael was fashionably late that day and missed all the hullabaloo. He arrived just as Andy was getting settled in the break room and, after much pestering, the boss learned what was going on. Everyone saw the gears turning in Michael’s mind as they prepared to go into training, and they wondered what new foolishness was in store.
Sure enough, about five minutes before the start time, Michael announced that he had an announcement, visibly shaking around a handful of tissues, which he'd been using to scrub at his nose for several minutes beforehand, making it a passable red.
"I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm sick too," he said, with a fake, congested tone. "I didn't want to worry you all. But if you all are really so worried about getting sick, I'd better go in with Bernard too, just to be safe."
The staff exchanged looks, wondering if they'd heard correctly. This seemed too good to be true.
"Well if you're sick, Michael, then you should definitely go in with Andy. We don't want to be breathing in your germs all day," Phyllis said.
"I'm definitely sick. I tried to hide it when I first got here, but I guess the cat's out of the bag. I'm really not feeling so good. Guess I'll have to go relax in the break room for a few hours," Michael said, trying to sound convincingly pathetic. "I'm not sure how much of the training I'll hear. I might have to take a nap at some point."
"Whatever you need to do. As long as you feel better and stay away from us," Pam agreed.
"Okay, then I guess I'll head on in there… you guys will bring us lunch at noon, right? Since I'm sure you don't want us going through the buffet line, being so sick and all." He rubbed at his nose with a loud sniffle for emphasis.
"Oh we'll make sure you're taken care of," Stanley said.
"I'll be standing guard by the door, Michael," Dwight said. "We can't have you escaping to shed your germs to the rest of us. The office would be in chaos."
One glance at Dwight showed that he believed Michael was truly sick, and Jim and Pam shared a secret smile at this realization. But he was playing right into what the rest of them wanted.
"Dwight is right, Michael. You'll have to stay in there all day. Can't be too careful," Jim said.
This made Michael pause, but they all knew he was in too deep now to backtrack. "...Okay," Michael said at last. "For the good of the team. I'll sacrifice my freedom for your health. I hope you're all thankful." He scrubbed at his nose again to make sure it stayed pink and itchy, giving them all a martyred look.
"You better get in there. You're breathing your germs all over us every second," Kelly said.
"Okay, okay, I'm going. I'll see you all on the other side," Michael said, with an attitude of going off to war.
Once the door was closed behind him, the staff shared a triumphant smile. A whole day free of Michael, and no chance of him making the training any worse than it had to be. It felt like Christmas had come early, at least as far as work could go.
~~~
Michael steeled himself as the door shut behind him to turn and face the visibly sick Andy. A whole day alone with Bernard would have been bad enough, but a sick Bernard would be a special sort of torture. Michael had a fleeting thought that getting out of training might not have been worth it for this, but there was no turning back now.
Andy was clearly surprised to have company, but Michael erupted into a fake coughing fit before he could speak, then carried forward into a loud, fake sneezing fit. When he emerged from his handful of tissues (with plenty of scrubbing at his nose for good measure), Andy's gaze was sympathetic.
"So you've got the crud too, huh? That's tough luck." Andy sniffled now, and it was far too wet-sounding to be fake, not to mention his glistening upper lip. "I wonder which one of us was patient 0."
"Huh?" Michael made his way to the sink, feeling the need to wash his hands already.
"You know, which of us got the other sick. Patient 0. The source of an infection."
"Oh! Oh it was definitely me. Yeah, I've been feeling sick since last Thursday or Friday."
"Wow, that's a long time. Yeah, then I guess it was you. I knew I shouldn't have let you sit at my desk for so long the other day." He clearly wasn't upset though and reclined in his chair, coughing and blowing his nose intermittently, never once washing his hands and leaving his tissues heaped up beside him.
 Fifteen minutes passed, then thirty, and still the laptop screen remained blank, saying they were waiting for the presenter in the lobby. It seemed they were having technical difficulties down the hall. Clearly bored, Andy stood and began to dig through the drawers idly.
"Hey, a deck of cards! We should play something," he said, sitting back down at the table and pushing the laptop aside, beginning to shuffle.
"I don't know… are you sure that's a full deck?" Michael asked, unable to pull his eyes from Andy's germy hands touching every card.
"Eh, who cares. We'll figure it out," Andy said. "C'mon, what are you, chicken? You think you can beat me even though I'm sick? No one ever beats Andy Bernard at cards. Just name the game."
Michael started to smile. "You know what, you're on, Bernard. Prepare to eat your words."
~~~
Andy's cold had a fast incubation period apparently, because the next morning it was Michael who arrived a sick, contagious mess. (Andy himself called in now that the threat of HR training had passed; apparently it was a long lasting cold too.) Michael announced his entrance with a violent sneeze that made everyone turn to look, wondering if he was continuing the charade. No such luck, though. There was no fake scrubbing needed to make his nose red and drippy, and there was no faking the wet, chesty coughing. There was also no mistaking the mischievous look in Michael's eyes as everyone was forced to witness the inevitability of this cold.
"Michael, why are you here when you're still clearly sick?" Dwight asked in alarm.
"Oh it's not that bad. I can still work. Besides, if I had to get sick from Bernard after being trapped with him for eight hours, then the rest of you should be sick too. I am patient 0!"
"No, you're not…." Jim said in irritation. "Andy still is. You just said you caught this from him. That makes him patient 0."
Michael glared at Jim and was trying to think of a good response when Dwight stepped between them.
"Oh no. I will not allow this, Michael." Pulling out gloves from somewhere on his person, Dwight began to shove Michael toward his office, with Michael protesting the whole way. Once Michael was inside, pounding against the door, Dwight posted himself as a guard outside just as he had the previous day.
A sullen-looking Michael shuffled to the window of his office to gaze forlornly out at them, wiping the back of his hand under his nose. The staff turned away one by one to return to their work, leaving their sick boss to stew in the consequences of his choices.
“Corn Syrup, Like in Carrie” | The Mikaelson Boys
Hey my lovelies this is my fic for @hellotvshowtrash ‘s March Prompt Challenge— I hope you all enjoy and especially you, Ash! I literally wrote this in a few hours so I hope it isn’t terrible; I wanted to make sure I actually submitted this month though because you put a lot of hard work into making fun things for us. I haven’t written for these boys in a while so this was nice :)
Description: Y/n drags Kol into a plan that is more dumb luck than actual planning— is it even a question that he would be willing to help?
Pairing: The Mikaelson Boys x Female!Reader
Warnings: Mentions of blood and death but in a casual, funny way (sadistic but funny), this might be the grungiest thing I’ve written to date
Word count: 1.99k (it’s literally 1999k, I pushed this as far as possible)
Tags: Fluff, a lil angst if you squint (squint is used loosely here)
Prompt: “This plan of yours is going to get us killed. Of course I’m in.”
Kudos if you get the picture easter egg!
Tumblr media
“You want to do what now?”
She huffs but the wicked smile on her face carves through the annoyance— of course she isn’t actually exasperated with him.
“You heard me Kol— I want to scare him!”
The brown eyed vamp rolls his eyes but his own grin is just as cunning. She can see the spark in his eyes, that little glint that lets her know everything she needs to know— lets her know that he’s in.
All in.
“You know that’s impossible darling,” he toys, his smirk too coy for a man over a thousand years old. “Klaus doesn’t get scared.”
She laughs— that’s what he thinks.
Kol’s brows push together, the glint growing alongside his smile, his sharp teeth poking into his lip. “I know that look— that look is never good.”
She meets him where he leans against the countertop, hopping up beside him and wrapping her arms around his cool shoulders. “Oh it’s good alright, Kol-y. I think you’ll like it very much.”
He turns towards her, running his nose across her jaw, peppering a few kisses against her skin before tilting his face up. “Well out with it then, darling— what’s the plan?”
She giggles, pressing her lips against his quickly before pulling back, pecking the vampire’s nose when he scrunches it. She shakes her head at his puppy dog eyes— easily distracted, that one is.
She leans down, whispering her idea into his ear, her chest blossoming with warmth when he shivers against her lips. She can’t tell if it’s because of how close she is or because he likes her plan— both, most likely. When she finishes speaking she nips his ear, tugging gently before releasing him. He groans when his ear meets the cool kitchen air, twisting to push between her legs.
He leans down, pressing his lips against her again. She can taste the mischief on his lips, tangy and sharp— someone has been eating blackberries again.
“You’re a menace darling.”
“Hmm—” she hums her agreement against his berry lips— “I learned from the best.”
He chuckles and this time she shivers, his lips trailing down her neck. “Is that so?”
She pushes against his chest, trying to regain some of his attention. This is important. She slips her fingers into his soft hair, knitting them between the strands and tugging until his baby browns meet her gaze. He sighs, his smile less menacing and more longing than moments ago. He raises his brow, his eyes flitting to her neck before going back to her eyes— are you going to speak or can I go back to what I was doing?
She huffs.
“Are you in or not, Mikaelson?” She grinds out as he tugs against her hand, just barely nipping at her sensitive skin.
He groans when she pulls her throat away from his ministrations, finally standing straight again. His hands slide up the sides of her neck, smoothing against her jaw, fingers hooking behind her ears.
“This plan of yours is going to get us killed, darling.” His soft grin sharpens as he speaks, the glint resurfacing in his eyes. To her it makes him look beautiful. It makes him look dangerous. “Of course I’m in.”
** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **
“Alright,” Kol announces, his cheerful voice drifting from the entrance to the compound to where she lays in a heap next to the couch. “He’s coming down the street now— I can hear him on the phone. I think he’s talking to Elijah.”
She can’t see the vamp but she knows that the mirth in his voice is much too extensive considering what they are about to do. Oh well. She raises a hand— she can’t speak with the blonde who’s now on their street hearing— signalling for him to get into place—
—and for him to dump the bucket of corn syrup, red dye number five, and just enough of her blood to make it smell real all over her body.
It goes on warm and sticky, scarily similar to actual blood, drenching the t-shirt she has decided to sacrifice. It’s for a good cause, she has to remind herself. Her skin itches where the mixture clings to her and she has to keep from giggling, her shoulders shaking. This had better work.
Kol’s boot nudges against her butt, tsking as she swallows another giggle. “Get with it darling— he’s almost here.”
She nods, splaying her limbs out in a way she imagines a dead— or almost dead— body would look. She doesn’t have to imagine too hard.
“Good job,” Kol whispers. “Billy Loomis would be proud.”
She smiles quickly at the reference— part of her plan was making him watch Scream with her.
“He’s here— let’s do this—“
The end of his sentence is cut off by a yell— his yell. They have to cover the sound of her heartbeat somehow. She can only keep her heart so steady and she’s not trying to give herself away before the fun has really begun. Thank heaven Kol has a good pair of lungs— and that he doesn’t need to breathe.
“Yeah I just go ba— Kol?” Like with Kol, she can’t see Klaus but she can hear him and the way his voice falters in confusion.
“Brother—” the way Kol’s voice hitches at the end of the word makes her almost break character. Someone sign this man up for an Oscar immediately— “I don’t know what happened. I left to get some of that ice cream she’s always talking about and— and—”
Klaus doesn’t speak but over Kol’s scarily astute acting she can hear commotion on the other end of his cellphone. Elijah— jackpot.
A double prank.
“Elijah give me a minute— Kol, what happened?”
Klaus’ heavy boots thunk against the concrete, the vibrations radiating through her cheek where it presses against the ground. His steps are almost as thundering as his voice, both echoing through the open space.
Kol plays along with his brother’s anger, matching it with his own. “I just said I don’t know!”
“What do you mean you don’t know! Look at her and tell me what you see—” his words stop, the air punctuated by a loud crack, no doubt the sound of his Iphone shattering into a hundred pieces.
Oops.
Suddenly there are hands on her back, nudging her softly, pulling at the sticky fabric of her t-shirt. You’re going to have to do better than that to wake the dead, babe. His hands get steadily more frantic— and more slimy— dragging the blood concoction into her hair as he checks her scalp and neck for injury. She holds her breath as his hand wraps around her jaw, lifting her face gently.
“Fuck, Kol, why is she bleeding so much?”
Kol only screeches in answer— again, she almost loses it. Klaus must not like that answer very much because he curses under his breath. Well, under his breath is a relative term. She is sure the entirety of Bourbon street hears the F-bomb he drops. The word is accompanied by the sound of her shirt being ripped in two. Here we go.
She feels a whoosh of air against her now revealed skin, steeling against the shiver that creeps up her spine at the cold air. Soon there is another pair of hands on her, sliding down her slick arms. She can picture the dyed corn syrup staining Elijah's dress shirt and the glare in his dark eyes when he realizes she has teamed up with his brother to wreak mayhem.
“What’s going on? What happened?” His sultry voice is worse than the cold air— and much harder to stave off.
“I don’t know—” both Klaus and Kol speak in unison, Klaus taking over for the both of them— “but there isn’t time to find out right now.”
Before she has time to process his words her body is being flipped over, her back pressing into the icy, sticky concrete. It takes all of her strength not to squeal at the contact. She hears a noise much too juicy for her liking before a warm artery is pressed against the seam of her lips. Perfect!
“C’mon love, please—”
When her mouth fills with a thick, metallic substance she breaks, springing forward and coughing wildly, making sure to swallow a good amount before hacking the rest up. She runs an arm across her eyelids, trying to unstick them but only managing to coat her eyelashes even more.
When she finally manages to peel her eyes open, spitting the last of Klaus’ blood out of her mouth, she is met with the faces of two shocked vampires and one vampire who is laughing his ass off. Kol’s laughter is infectious— especially because she’s been holding back giggles since the start of their ruse— and soon she is joining him, laughing so hard she falls backwards again into the goo.
For a moment there is silence— only the sound of her and Kol’s laughter— before it gives way to Klaus’ deathly calm voice. “What the hell is going on here?”
She pushes herself up on an elbow, flashing him a scarlet drenched smile— she would give anything to see her crimson teeth right now. She runs her tongue over them to enhance the point.
“Did I scare you?”
His eyes flash with black. “Did you scare me—”
“Yes, you scared us!” Elijah’s red hands wrap around her forearms, hauling her into his chest without a care for his white shirt. “May I ask why?”
Elijah’s chest shudders, his arms curling around her waist. He wasn’t lying— he’s terrified. He smells like cooking oil and metal but she doesn’t care— he’s too warm for her to mind. His lips press against her forehead and she almost feels bad.
Almost.
A hand wraps around her hair from behind, yanking her back from his brother’s chest. “What Elijah means to say is can we demand why? Why you would try something like that?”
She dips her head further back, squinting up at the furious blonde. “Oh you already know why, love.”
He rolls his eyes, his jaw clenched but leaning down to brush his cheek against hers regardless. “Indulge me anyway.”
She tilts her head, skimming her tacky lips against his stubble. “To make a point.”
“Oh yeah? And what point might that be?”
“That I am fragile—” she pulls upright, turning in Elijah’s arms and dropping the cheshire grin— “that you can’t protect me all the time—” she pushes forward, crawling onto Klaus’ drenched lap— “that I need to be like you.”
He sighs, his forehead dropping against hers, his hands curling around her jaw. “This again?”
Her arms hook around his neck, fingers tangling in his blonde hair. “You know I’m right.”
Klaus’ shoulders slump, his golden eyebrows knitting together. “Does it have to be right now?”
“Your blood is already in my system.”
“You’re going to be the death of me, you know that?”
She smiles back at him, leaning in for what she hopes is one last human kiss. “Shouldn’t I be the one saying that?”
He only sighs, shaking his head as Kol laces his fingers with hers. She turns to the brown eyed vamp just in time to see him pass her a mischievous wink.
It is the last thing she sees before the world around her goes dark.
** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** ** **
She wakes feeling significantly less sticky than she had when she blacked out— and significantly more hungry. She can’t remember the last time her throat was dry like this. Is she catching a cold? She shifts slightly, her elbow piling into a pillow underneath her. The pillow grunts.
Not a pillow.
Kol rises beside her, pressing a hand to her chest until she falls back against the mattress and then rolling on top of her, sinking his face against her neck. The words he mumbles into her skin make her dead heart stop in the best way.
“I told you that plan would get you killed.”
Valentine's Day.
A day of love.
A day of romance.
A day for couples to declare their undying love, while single people sat at home with a box of chocolate sulking.
For the last few years, Henry was the latter. He was no stranger to sitting home on “the most romantic day of the year”, feasting on some chocolate from a heart shaped box. Although he didn't recall much sulking.
You on the other hand, were never one to celebrate or sit in on Valentine's Day. Even single, you found an excuse to go out for the evening. Oh the looks you would get, while taking yourself out for a fancy dinner.
This year was different.
It was going to be low key, but no doubt still fun. The best part, Kal and Moose weren't home alone waiting.
“I'm going to need you to do me a big favour, okay pig.” Henry glanced down at Kal who was sitting by his side, watching every move Henry made in the kitchen. “You and Moose need to be the best boys that you can. No mayhem this evening.”
Licking his lips and yawning, Kal huffed as his tail thumped heavily on the floor. He was slightly insulted, when had he and Moose ever caused mayhem? They were the most perfect best boys, ever! What did Henry think he was doing, talking as if they were a couple of uncultured stray dogs.
Walking along the familiar street, you glance down at Moose, sniffing along Kal's street he huffed and picked up his speed. Almost there! A few more minutes and he would be with his best friend, romping and stalking that damn green ball that made that atrocious noise every time it moved. Tonight, maybe, just maybe, they would finally give that thing what it had coming.
“Are you and Kal going to be good?” You ask the unconcerned dog. “Hmm? Play with Kal's toys nicely and not tear Henry's house apart?”
Moose snuffled, whatever that meant. Of course they would be good, they were always good. Ugh, humans.
Stepping onto the front stoop of Henry's home, you asked Moose to sit while you checked to see if the front was unlocked. It wasn't surprising that you would simply walk in, if the door was unlocked. Henry rarely knocked at your place, most times he would be in the house and standing beside you before you took notice.
“Knock, Knock.” You call pushing open the door. Moose whimpers and yips, tugging on his leash. Unhooking his leash, you laugh when he jumps forward nearly knocking into Henry as he tries to get to Kal. “Remember boys, make good choices.”
“Good evening,” Henry smiles taking your coat and hanging it. “I uh, I'm glad you could make it over.”
“Of course, thanks for inviting us over.”
Wow, this was awkward. As much time as the two of you spent together, it shouldn't be this weird or awkward. Biting your bottom lip, you follow Henry into the house, stopping on the way to the kitchen to give Kal a nice scratch behind the ear. He and Moose were already at home on the couch, a few toys between them, as they happily sprawled out.
“Be good, Moose.” You wag a finger playfully at the red aussie, giving him a kiss on the nose. “Wow it smells good in here.” Inhaling deeply, you take a moment to appreciate the smell wafting from the kitchen.
Henry smiled proudly, quickly kissing your cheek. “Spiced fish and coriander rice, with peas.”
“Oh my god, this smells like heaven. Did you make this?”
“Of course.” Henry laughs slightly. “I can't promise it will be the best, but I think it has flavour.”
“Is there anything I can do to help?” You tug at the sleeves of your sweater.
“Have a seat? Sorry to rush you, but I wanted to get this on the table, while it's still hot.”
“Are you kidding? I will never feel rushed when there is food.” Laughing you grab the bottle of wine from the cupboard, along with two glasses and tote them to the table. The usually cluttered table is clear of all debris, a soft grey linen cloth draped on top, along with an arrangement of rather lovely scented candles. “I like the look. Going formal are we? Shit, I should have dressed up.”
“Non sense, you look lovely.” Henry chuckled, he had put more effort into the meal and table than he had planned. All last minute of course.
“And you look...” You glance at his casual jeans and tshirt. “I like that red.”
“Flattery?” Cocking his brow, Henry held back a laugh. Teasing you. “You feeling okay?”
“I feel fine, now let's eat.” You gesture to the plates in his hand. The fragrant smell is torture, it should be illegal to make you wait to taste food that looks and smells that good.
Seated, you can't help but sit inhaling the aroma wafting from the plate in front of you. Evidently Kal and Moose have picked up that it is dinner time, their respective paw steps coming from the living room. Attempting to look innocent, Kal slides in under the table his large body bumping against Henry's legs. If he is trying to be stealthy it is not working out. Moose takes a bold approach, sitting a few inches from the table he lifts his head and sniffs.
A low growling noise, he licks his lips and bounces to his hind feet before sinking back down into a sit.
“Moose, go.” You wave him away.
“Kal, stop licking my ankle.” Henry shakes his leg, Kal's cold wet nose hiking up the cuff of his jeans. “Kal, go on.”
“Moose, you know better.” Eyeing the dog you can't help but smile. “Worse than kids.”
“I would hope my children didn't hide under tables licking my feet.” Bursting into a laugh, Henry shakes his leg away from Kal. “Kal, go on. Go on boys, I will feed you after.”
Dejected and clearly starving, the two dogs slink back to the couch. At least they had tried for a scrap or even a scratch. Ending their plans, they sulk the entire ten feet that they walk. Poor dears. How ever will they survive? Knowing that dinner is waiting for them, you feel no guilt or sympathy. Spoiled is the only word to describe the pair of them. Worse than children, getting everything they want and acting like they are ignored when they don't.
“If you ever want to quit acting, I think you have a career in culinary.” You compliment reaching for the riesling that Henry had nearly expertly paired with dinner.
“There is more, I have a raspberries and cream or...”
“Wait, there is more? Oof, I may need a moment to let this digest.” You laugh lightly. Henry had gone all out this time. “You have really spoiled me.”
“I may be bias, but I think you deserve it.”
“Oh really? And why is that?”
“I have my reasons, all which are very good but escaping me in this moment. Trust me, when I say, I thoroughly enjoy getting to make you dinner. It's nice having someone to spend time with, especially today. It's been a while since I've had someone to spoil on Valentine's.” Henry picked up his glass, taking a drink of his wine. Licking his lips, he coughed lightly. “The last few years I have been making today all about Kal. Kalentine's Day, if you will. A nice bath, a good grooming, extra time at the park.”
“Sounds like a great way to spend the day.”
“It may be a bit late for the park, but I could offer a nice bath. Perhaps a foot rub?”
“All would be acceptable, as long as you don't take Kal's approach. I'm not much into having my feet licked.” You can't help yourself, it sort of slipped out. Nearly choking Henry in the process. Wine sputtered from his mouth, avoiding spitting it on you, he manages a napkin. His face red and his chest heaving with a silent laugh.
“Noted.” He gasps, caught between surprise and laughter. “Well, dessert then?”
Henry had tried to clear the table without your help, as if. Little good did it do, the second he stood you were on his heels carrying your plate into the kitchen. He rolled his eyes, but didn't say anything about it. He had learned not to argue with you, it would be futile. Keeping his protests silent, Henry watched as you loaded the dishwasher, humming quietly.
Dessert plated, Henry motioned for you to lead the way to the table. As nice as the table looked, you were more than happy to relax on the couch - even if it meant kicking Kal and Moose, the poor souls, to the floor. Diverting course, Henry followed, the two of you chatting about the latest family gossips. He was telling you about his nephew Oscar, when you gasped and stopped short.
Nearly bumping into you, Henry caught himself and both of the desserts that he had in his hand. On the floor of his living room there laid the evidence. All around were pieces of red and brown material. White cotton stuffing littered the room and the look on Moose's face told you nearly everything.
“Moose,” You groan looking at the stuffing flung around the room. The Aussie looking innocent, yet the clump of red material in his mouth is giving him away. “You tore up Kal's stuffy.”
“Stuffy?” Henry's eyes widened. “Oh shit. Shit.”
“What? What's wrong?” You watched as he placed dessert on the coffee table, rushing the to tall shelf that sat behind his couch.
At least he still had the flowers, well shit. His face fell when he found them smashed to the floor and trampled.
“Well,” He rubbed the back of his neck, gesturing to the mess in his living room. “Happy Valentine's Day. I had planned on giving you a present, but...”
“Oh, Henry.” You squeeze your eyes shut. “I'm so sorry. I... Moose!”
“No, no. It's fine. It's not entirely his fault.” He glanced at Kal, holding the head of the teddy bear in his mouth, “There is only one of them who could have reached it. Eh, bear?”
“Boys,” You sigh and shake your head.  “Wait,” You glance curiously at Henry, giving him a sly smirk, “did you say you got me a gift? It's not my birthday. Nor it is Christmas.”
“No, but it's Valentine's Day.” Henry shrugged debating to salvage the gift or move on. “I wanted to do something nice, since....well.”
“Oh! Right.” You can't contain the smile that overtook your face in seconds. “I um, I honestly thought this was just us having dinner as...well friends?”
“And it can still be that, absolutely.” Henry nodded. “I don't want to impose or push anything.”
Stooping to pick up a few pieces of what used to be a teddy bear, you scratch Kal behind the ears and take a seat on the couch. "You're not imposing anything. I just didn't know what we were. Or if we were anything. I thought that I'd come over as a friend and...you know what, let's not bother with this now. We can talk later, sit let's have dessert. I am dying to try this raspberry cream.”
Henry sits beside you, reaching for the dessert bowls, to find one empty. “Moose,” he looked at the dog with red cream on his snout. “I swear to god,”  laughing, he hands you a spoon. “Care to share?”
“Well, well, well.” You take the spoon shaking your head, playfully. “Henry Cavill is sharing dessert?”
“They destroyed your present and this is the only dessert, the least that I can do.”
“I wouldn't be against that bath,” You scoop some of the cream from the bowl, “but no feet.”
“No feet.” Henry laughed, his chest rumbling and his eyes crinkling. “Got it.”
Rosegarden Week- Day 1: Cuddles
Hello friends!! First day of Rosegarden Week, let’s keep this sweet week going!
______________________
“Don’t worry lil sis, you’ll be able to come when you grow up big and strong like me!” Yang yelled from the door, one arm wrapped around Blake’s shoulder and the other wrapped around Weiss.
“Yeah, Ruby. Don’t worry, you’ll get there soon.” Enthused Weiss, continuing to tease Ruby.
The girl in question only shot daggers at her friends and burrowed deeper in her cocoon of blankets.
Blake regarded her leader with a look of sympathy but decided against saying anything. She herself had been at that age that she wanted to be more independent, do grown up things, but then landed herself in Adam’s clutches. Rookie mistake of burning stages when time is your best ally.
Checking her scroll, Blake announced the time, and tugged on the blonde’s arm lightly. Burn as she might have been, Blake decided that being in Yang’s clutches was way better.
“Kay, Rubes! We´re leaving!” Weiss nudged Yang’s side and pulled, rolling her eyes.
No answer.
Ruby wrapped herself in a blanket, grumbling at her sister’s farewell from the door, too engrossed in her musings to truly care for a goodbye. The door closed mutedly, a gust of wind shuddered the windowpanes, and still Ruby fumed silently.
It had finally happened. Ruby’s most embarrassing moment of her life, one that no one would let her live down.
Even after all this time of fighting Grimm and being promoted to Huntress status, Ruby still got thrown out of a nightclub, planting her butt on a bank of snow, because she was 17 and thus, still considered a minor.
Twice.
‘It’s just so unfair!’, Ruby thought after brooding a bit more in furious quiet. ‘I risk my butt out there every day, and I can’t have fun!’. While very true, it was the middle of winter, and her coming of age birthday would not come for another year.
A few minutes passed before her mood lifted a bit. She had been putting off exploring the Atlas Academy kitchens, as well as their rec room. She was free to do as she pleased. Sighing softly, she shook the remaining grumpiness from her shoulders and rolled out of bed. She still had on the clubbing clothes Weiss had chosen for her: red shimmery top and black leather coupled with soggy tights after being pushed down a snowbank twice.
Peeling off her street wear, Ruby clad herself in her favorite long-sleeved pajama set, and wrapped a gray fleece blanket around her shoulders as she walked out the door.
She was gonna have some fun tonight, even if it were by her lonesome.
__________________________________________
Oscar hummed as he worked on incorporating the eggs into the sugary butter mixture in his bowl. He was in such a good mood, even after all his friends had gone out to party like hooligans. He was sure that the coming tales from the partying teens would make his breakfast much more interesting.
The academy kitchens were at his full disposition and Oscar was too much of a homebody to care that he was alone. He had dressed in his Nora-Issued Pumpkin Pete patterned pajama set (all members of team JNPR just had to match!) and a fluffy brown robe loosely tied to his waist. His shoulders were relaxed and with ease he found himself whisking away in his own world of warmth and coziness. He had forgone the bandages for the night, as his teammates would be long before they come back to their dorm and had applied some scarring salve to his neck.
He felt at ease, with his neck scars uncovered and airing out. They itched like they normally did after so long under bandages, but he avoided touching his itchy neck while he was cooking.
He threw in a handful of chocolate chips to the mixture as he fell back to his thoughts.
Nora and Yang would for sure bring the funniest anecdotes of the night, seconded only with Jaune’s string of guys and girls that would surely go after his “earnest and boyish allure”, as one of the Mantle moms had put it. Oscar chuckled at the thought of Jaune not understanding how he got a fanclub in the first place as he measured the cup of flour.
Slowly, so as to not overwhelm the cookie dough with the Atlesian flour (he preferred the one that his neighbors manufactured at their mill), he spooned a bit of the flour as he felt relaxing again. He imagined that each spoonful was one individual problem or obstacle of his day, and as he released it into the bowl, he felt letting go of his daily troubles. He inhaled deeply through his nostrils like Maria had taught him and was about to release slowly through his mouth.
Except.
“Whatcha doing, Oscar?”, an inquisitive voice startled him into a surprised gasp as a cloud of flour filled his field of vision. Both teens spluttered and coughed as flour got into their airways.
“M-milk!” groaned Oscar, his eyes stinging as his throat constricted painfully. Through the massive hacking, Ruby found the milk and uncapped it fast, and delivered it with a slap to Oscar’s chest.
Oscar took one gulp of milk and slammed the carton on the counter, his coughing fit reduced but not contained. Ruby took the carton then and had a swig herself before slamming it back on the counter, Oscar taking it then, and so on and so forth.
After the milk had been drank, the two teens slumped on the counter as evil (in the form of non glutinous Atlesian flour) had tried to take them to an early grave.
Winded out and cheeks planted on the cold countertop, they looked at each other and gave a giggly sigh.
“So…what were you doing before almost dying at age fourteen?”, Ruby asked as she booped him on the cheek.
He blushed lightly and sat back up as he slid the bowl of cookie dough to Ruby.
“Chocolate chip cookies.” He answered simply as he watched the black-haired girl taste a spoonful of dough. She wiggled in her seat.
“Man, this is good!” She said enthusiastically before a deadpan Oscar plopped a whole cup of flour into the bowl Ruby was digging her spoon back in. She pouted as he resumed his whisking around.
Oscar worked in silence, as Ruby watched his every move. He made baking look like a meditative process and looked so in the zone that she dared not to speak.
It was only as he planted the last of the dough using an ice cream scoop that he spoke up again.
“And I’m fifteen, by the way.”
The way that Ruby screeched her surprise made him stumble a bit, as he looked bewildered at her.
__________________________________________
Ruby paced back and forth in front of Oscar as he held a jar of freshly baked cookies in his lap. This particular rec room they were in had been loaned specifically for their group, seeing as General Ironwood in true Atlesian fashion, liked to play favourites and offered a ‘special housing arrangement for such a special group’.
The girl finished the last bite of her cookie, and as she gulped down, she turned to look at Oscar.
“March. The. Twentieth.” He shrank slightly as he passed another cookie to the fuming teen in front of him.
“Yep.”
“We are in APRIL! THE! TWENTIETH!”
“Mhm.”
“A whole month passed!” He just looked at her as she inhaled the cookie in her hand. She turned back to him and shook his shoulders slightly, “Why didn’t you tell us!?”, he just shrugged.
“I lost track of time; I swear! We were all just so busy training, and going to missions, and stuff…”
“But you didn’t go to any missions you just trained with the General!”
Oscar just rubbed his arm, looking at a cookie as he seemingly inspected it for imperfections. He sat silently as he willed his face to not heat up under such strong scrutiny.
Ruby bit her lip as she realized that he had not gone to any missions, but she and the rest did.
“Ah.” She said, suddenly feeling quite lame as she wrapped herself tighter in her blanket. Ruby watched as Oscar nibbled on a cookie, collecting his thoughts. She sat down on the couch with him shoulder to shoulder, her bravado gone.
They sat in silence munching on cookies for a bit, before Ruby jumped up and dashed away in a flurry of red petals, leaving Oscar mulling the past minutes over and over again.
Sitting there alone he thought about how silly it became to him that he halfheartedly hoped for Ruby to come back. Just as he was dusting himself off, Ruby reappeared in front of him carrying bulks of blankets under both arms.
“Meet me in my dorm in like ten, kay?” she said hurriedly as she tucked the sofa cushion under her chin and bolted back to her dorm.
Oscar felt a flurry of nervousness, and giddiness at the pit of his stomach, which he tried to stomp with yet another cookie.
Deciding to get the rest of the cookies, he walked back to the kitchen and prepared a basket with whatever he could find.
__________________________________________
“Woah.” Oscar had been caught unaware and surprised many times over since he joined the ragtag group of hunstmen rookies, he had seen horrors beyond his imagination, and his fate revealed cruelly in front of his very eyes. He had also seen bouts of astounding magic and impossible things. He had done impossible things.
But he had never been surprised silly by the simplest of things. Like this. Oscar felt a special type of warmth in his heart as he watched as Ruby applied the last touches to the most spectacular pillow fort he had seen in his life.
Somehow, she had found fairy lights and attached them to a canopy of blankets over the nest of pillows and sofa cushions that lay arranged in a very cozy manner on the floor. It looked comfy as hell and knowing Atlas’ penchant for luxurious materials for the tiniest of things, he had no doubt that the pillows were heavenly soft and plush.
He swept his gaze to Ruby as she set her scroll on top of some books, the camera facing a wall and in projector mode as it displayed a frozen still from a movie (or something). He sniffled a bit, touched by the barest of details, and his eyes pricked ever so lightly.
Hearing the quiet sniffle, Ruby whirled around and caught him misty eyed. In a panic, she rushed to him and squished his cheeks as she shushed him.
“Not! No crying today, Oscar. We´re gonna watch comedies and gorge ourselves in food till we enter a food coma.” Oscar nodded, his cheeks and ears heating up as Ruby continued to press her palms to his face.
Oscar had felt the rush of blood to his veins before, but it was always under perilious circumstances. Never before had a friend (definitely not a crush!) done something so touching and…homey. Like this.
“Mm mwot gwon cwa, boh plis rewt me gwo.” Ruby blinked at the unintelligible string of sounds that left Oscar’s pinched lips. Realizing she had squeezed his cheeks for too long, she let go immediately.
“Oh! He-hee. Oops, my bad.” She stammered, suddenly embarrassed.
“It’s ok. I got some of the fancy stuff that Winter keeps sending Weiss but that she doesn’t actually like.” He said, lifting the basket up for Ruby to inspect.
After accepting his offer of cold meat cuts and fancy-difficult- to-pronounce cheeses, Oscar and Ruby settled on the nest of soft blankets and plush pillows on the floor.
“Kay,” Ruby began as she went over tonight’s movie selection, “I got The Yuletide, about a girl living in a cottage in Mistral and another lady in a mansion in Atlas who swap homes for the holiday. I also got Huntsman Trap, about two estranged huntress trainees who get into the same Academy, discover they are twins and set up their big-name Huntsmen parents who got divorced. Or! The Pink Manticore, a crazy detective from Vacuo joins forces with experts to find the fabled Pink Manticore, a huge pink diamond that is rumoured to be possessed.”
Oscar scratched his chin deep in thought as he hugged a pillow to his chest.
“Mhm… How about the twin movie?”
Ruby grinned. She had already selected the movie.
_________________________________________
After watching two of Ruby’s movie selections and eating sweet and savory foods until they could no longer accept one more crumb, both teens plopped down the pillows and burrowed in the fluffy blankets contentedly.
Ruby had turned off the fairy lights, and her scroll was projecting on their canopy of blankets overhead the pinpricks of the night sky.
Oscar was looking at the soft flecks of lights, flickering like they would under the winter night. His hands rested lazily on his full stomach, his left hand every so often pointing at the makeshift heavens.
“What’s that… smoky section of the sky?” Ruby asked, her right hand pointing at the general direction of the splattering of spots above.
Oscar narrowed his eyes a bit, pulling a memory not his own, but soon to become, out of the recesses of his soul.
“That’s the Seafoam River, we can’t really see it because of pollution, but many years ago it was brighter than the Moon.” He explained.
Ruby ‘aah-ed’ and looked at the stripe of stars and nebulae. She turned her body slightly to look at him, her palm under her chin.
“I have a question.” She said simply, her stare was hot platinum, intense and burning into his very soul.
Oscar turned his body to mirror hers and noticed her steadfast gaze. Feeling blood rush to his neck, he realized with a jolt that his scars were visible and had been for the entirety of the night. His hand flew fast to the side of his neck, shielding as much as he could the reminder of his childhood trauma.
“I… This is from the day my parents died.” He confessed. Ruby made a sound at the back of her throat, confused. “Can’t remember well, but a Grimm-“
“That wasn’t it!” Ruby interrupted as she grabbed his hand in hers, shaking Oscar out of his memories. “Just wanted to ask what type of farm you had, that’s all!” Oscar let a soft ‘oh?’, surprised. “But if you feel ready to tell me about it, I am here.”
Oscar shook his head.
“Sorry! I just thought… I didn’t want to scare you off with this.” He pointed at the cris-crossed scarred pattern in his neck.
Ruby giggled softly as she squeezed his hand.
“Oscar, my sister lost her arm and Weiss and Blake all have scars. We all do. We just gotta… accept them for the gift of a second chance that they are.”
Slowly, Oscar laid back down on his back. His long mile stare bore holes on the piece of fabric over their heads as he just laid there pensive.
“You don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to… I can put on another movie from our selection, its fine!” Ruby sat up quickly to select the Pink Manticore, the funny Vacuoan noir comedy, when she felt Oscar tug at their still joined hands. She squeezed his hand softly.
“Actually, I always dreamed about getting sheep so I could collect their wool and make dyed yarn and maybe sell it down by the town square.”
Smiling softly, Ruby settled back down and tuned to Oscar as he explained the process of shearing and dying wool.
Over time, the conversation petered out in between yawns and strenuous effort to keep awake. The last thing Ruby saw was Oscar’s eyelashes brushing his cheeks as he finally fell asleep, his face relaxed and content.
Looking at their held hands between their bodies, she felt happier than she had been in a very long time. She had finally gotten to learn more about her friend, and feeling particularly close and placid, she let sleep wash over her.
_________________________________________
“Aw man, look at this!” Whisper-yelled Yang from the doorway to their dorm before she got loudly shushed by a barely sober Weiss.
The white-haired huntress was standing impossibly slanted, forty-five degrees to her right as she tried (in vain) to regain her composure, while Yang looked on the scene before her from the door.
“They. Are. Sleeping!” Weiss complained to her blonde teammate, who shushed her back sarcastically.
Irritated, Weiss began shushing Yang as she mimicked the white-haired girl back, initiating an argument expressed in overly dramatic shushing.
Blake and Ren shared a long-time suffering look, peeking out close enough to the door but not too much, avoiding Nora who fell asleep in the middle of the hallway, standing straight up, holding on to a stop-sign she had nicked from Mantle.
Jaune looked at Ruby and Oscar, both looking impossibly cozy as they cuddled in their pillow nest. They hugged lightly in their sleep, snoring softly and unaware of their friends looking at their snuggle.
“Look at them!” Jaune exclaimed softly, blue eyes soft and fond as he regarded his younger teammates. “They are headbutting their foreheads together!”
Blake poked her head into the room to see better and hummed.
“I get what they are trying to say. Headbutting is a whole declaration.” She said sagely, her ears twitching over her head. Blinking, she turned to the hallway as she heard someone approaching. She cocked her head when she saw who it was.
“Hey, Penny.”
“Salutations my friends!” The red-haired android girl exclaimed happily.
Weiss stopped her shushing match with Yang and slowly turned to Penny.
“Penny! Hush! Look at them they are sleeping!” she slurred.
Penny engaged her lock-on optics to scan Weiss quickly.
“Oh! It seems that you have been inebriated!”
Weiss spluttered indignantly.
Deciding to leave the dorm for the time being, Jaune pushed his way out of the dorm and closed the door.
“Hey guys, maybe we should simmer down a little bit.” Jaune said, pointing at the closed door as he tried to her the group further down the corridor.
Yang chuckled.
“Yeah! Looks like Ruby and Oscar need to catch up on their sleep to grow big and strong.” A chorus of giggles echoed as the group tried to stifle their laughter while Penny looked on confused.
“Sleep? But if I came here to wait exactly forty-five minutes until your usual waking time?”
Weiss snapped out of it suddenly.
“Are you telling me its already five a.m.?!”
Later that day Marrow noticed that the kids from Beacon all seemed lethargic and whiny, compared to their usual selves. Their reaction times were off and seemed confused. Frankly, it was like herding cats that day.
Marrow decided to take Ruby and Oscar, who were spry and looking fresh, on a stake out with him by the Solitas’ mines instead. During the entire mission, Oscar and Ruby seemed to have a new spring on their steps, and in Marrow’s opinion, he had once again stuck babysitting more lovesick fools.
Come As You Are
Blake: [To Sun] I still don’t think this is necessary.
Sun: C’mon, babe-a-licious, it’s perfect! You’re the life of the party!
Blake: *Raises eyebrow*
Sun: Okay, well you were the life of the party but that’s not your fault.
Yang: Yeah partner, it’s pretty hard to compete with [gestures at her body] all this!
Blake sighed, choosing to ignore that comment and glanced down at herself. They were at a “come as you are” party celebrating something (though it seemed like with the death of the Grimm Queen and the rapid downspike in Grimm activity, plus a collective loss of intelligence in the Grimm, that people didn’t need a an actual reason to party) and the theme was obvious.
So Blake had eventually caved to Sun’s pleas and was busy wearing what was effectively lingerie. A black bandeau top with a cartoonish hole shaped like a cat head (basically a circle with two triangles about where the ears would be) that left little to the imagination as to the size and shape of her boobs and a short black skirt, a studded belt and hanging from the studded belt was a black cat tail. Her ears were on display, she’d drawn whiskers on her cheeks and blackened the tip of her nose but she’d drawn the line at wearing cat paw gloves and slippers and had opted for a sensible pair of heels.
Sun had basically stripped down to a furry yellow speedo and a pair of flip flops and was carrying a bunch of bananas, his own tail swishing back and forth happily.
Yang on the other hand was technically wearing more but it hardly mattered. She’d somehow managed to fit her excessive curves into a skintight bodysuit that was somewhere between a leotard and a corset, her rump barely fitting in the back while Yang’s breasts were all but spilling out of the top. It was sleeveless, she wore no stockings as she was happy to show off her legs and she wore a pair of four inch black pumps and atop a head filled with lightly curled blonde hair was a pair of bunny ears. And as if to prove her statement right, Yang had had eyes on her all night, not that it mattered to the very taken brawler.
Three guesses what she’s was supposed to be and the first two don’t count, Blake thought.
Blake: Such modesty, Yang.
Yang: Pfft, modesty schmodesty. If you got it--
Blake: Let it all hang out?
Yang: *Snorts* You see anything hanging?
Sun: [Uncomfy] Hey, uh, isn’t Jaune supposed to be here? I mean you two did say you were gonna match outfits.
Yang: Yeah, well, lover boy changed his mind last second and refused to share with his loving girlfriend what he was doing.
Blake: You put him in a headlock and demanded he tell you again?
Yang: *Blushes* No! I haven’t done that in years!
Blake: *Waits*
Yang: [Sighs in defeat] I may have tried to smother him.
Blake:*Crosses arms*
Sun: With your--
Yang: With my tits. [Grumbles] I think I’m using them too much if he’s actually developing an immunity.
Blake: [Pleased] There we go.
Still, Blake couldn’t help but smile at the grumpy and still slightly red faced form of her partner even as Sun coughed and tried to pretend that he suddenly found something interesting about Oscar’s exaggerated farmer costume of heavy brown boots, heavy duty dark blue jeans and the black-and-red plaid shirt he had tucked into his jeans with the sleeves rolled up, one hand carrying an actual hay fork.
Blake looked around and saw Ruby in track shoes, track pants and a sports bra with goggles resting at her hairline. She was busy talking to a group of admirers alongside Weiss, who was in a smart pure white pantsuit with a pale blue blouse beneath that really was no different from her everyday wear as the CEO of the Schnee Dust Company. The only additions being a clipboard and a pair of fake eyeglasses to sell the look, her hair dun up in a bun.
Nora was wearing a horned helm of some sort, sleeveless chainmail that left her biceps open to admire and brown leather bracers on her forearms. She wore studded black leather pants that showed off an equally powerful lower body and furred boots. A red cape was tied around her neck and the young woman had Magnhild over her shoulder and was darting about excitedly, other partygoers ducking to avoid getting smashed over the head by the low hanging hammer.
Blake wasn’t sure what she was supposed to be, but the same went for Ren who wore poofy white pants, black flats (slippers? She didn’t know) and a green jacket that was similar to his first outfit, but he could hide his hands in his sleeves and rather than buttons, there was a length of white rope that tied it together. He was busily following Nora, trying to ensure she didn’t cause any brain damage in her hyperactive state.
Otherwise Neptune was wearing a toga and a golden circlet of equally golden leaves native to Mistral with strappy brown leather sandals. Sage was across the room wearing a ceremonial robe that was unfamiliar to the Menagerie born faunus with a wooden staff and Scarlet was both dressed as a stereotypical pirate and was clearly flirting with Yang’s uncle, who’d been lazy and added a small top hat and wraparound shades and was drinking liberally from a flask.
There were others they knew but the only others she could see at the moment were Fiona Thyme in what looked like wool footie pajamas and Maria Calavera in a hooded cloak, upside down and...doing a kegstand with two men near her age holding her feet, wearing what looked like a gimp suit, the other in slacks, suspenders, a bow tie and nothing else!?
Blake’s head snapped back to Yang who was staring, disturbed, at the same scene. Blake shuddered. Sun shrugged.
Sun: At least the old lady’s having fun.
Yang: Yeah. Kinda wished her fun didn’t make me wanna bleach my eyeballs though. [Grouchily and quiet] Where is he? I swear, if he’s skipping out on me...
Blake: I’m sure he’s just--
A ripple of laughter cut her off and Blake blinked, looked and--
Blake: [Disappointed] Late. *Big sigh* Oh boy.
Sun: [Breaks down into snorting laughter, turns away to avoid potential Yanger]
Yang: [Spins] What’s--
Jaune had arrived, but instead of whatever he’d agreed to wear with Yang he was wearing a large, stereotypical trash can around his torso with his bare arms moving awkwardly at his sides, his bare legs waddling slightly in the clanging and clunking costume. On his brightly grinning head was the top to the trash can, held in place by a strap that went under his chin.
Yang: [Sputtering incoherently]
Ruby: [Distantly] Yang, that’s so mean!
Yang: [Distressed] I didn’t--
Weiss: [Distantly] For shame, Yang Xiao Long.
Yang: [Upset] Nooo, it’s not--
Partygoer: Wow. Poor guy. [To his girlfriend] Please don’t ever do that to me. [Girlfriend hugs his arm]
Yang: [More upset] I swear--
Scarlet: [Finally looks over] *Squawking laughter*
Yang: [Even more upset] Stop, it’s seriously not--
Qrow: [Disappointedly] Firecracker. We raised you better.
Yang: [Can’t decide whether to cry or explode; pouts at Jaune while trying to glare] Baby, we talked about this!
Jaune: [Happily smiling] You talked. I ignored. Besides, everybody’s perfectly in character! Who am I to deny my nature!?
Yang: *Unhappy teakettle noises*
You scrubbed alongside Oscar, water splashing against you as the boat hit massive waves, the men around you talking of crude and awful things, and you never felt more at home. This was your element, not stuffy dresses and raised pinkies. Oscar nudged you roughly, smiling crookedly as he watched you slip onto your elbows, shirt drifting-
“Lad, here now!” the boatswain Otto bellowed, pointing at you as you looked up in fear. He had never spoken to you, why now? You nodded and stood, slipping again, hearing Oscar and the men’s chuckles behind your mortified form as you ran to the man. He stalked away, into a tucked corner away from seeing eyes, looking down at you, squinting, as if-
“Lass, you should be more careful.” He muttered softly, hands raising to hold the fabric of your white shirt closed, your mouth gaping wide at his words, at his gentle tone.
Otto continued to stare down at you, taking in your features for the first time upclose, feeling a stir inside his loins at your expression, soft hands reaching for his own. The gesture surprised him, your soft gaze turning playful as he quickly buttoned your shirt closed, higher than before, pulling your vest out of your pants to help hide your form better.
“Thank you, Mr Otto, I appreciate it...” you smiled, not hiding your real voice from him anymore. He delighted at the sound, taking in the way your lips quirked up, soft, beckoning-
“You are most welcome...” he tried before pausing, leaning forward, wanting to know your true name, to see if it fit you just as well as your hands did against his own.
“Y/N.” You offered finally, smiling wider as he mirrored you, looking as if someone had gifted him with the greatest gift ever.
He must have known, as he coughed, hand rising to hide his mouth while his sparkling eyes looked away, the sway of the ship making you step momentarily closer.
“Right, back to work you go Y/N- lad.” Otto coughed once more, clearing his throat. He chanced it and looked down at you once more and knew it, you were surely going to ruin them all if anyone else saw your gentle and amazing smile. Men would most likely kill for a glimpse down your blouse, just like he had moments ago.
You looked around and stood on your toes, kissing the side of his mouth quickly before stepping away, leaving the poor Deck Leader to lean against the ships wood behind him, eyes wide in shock and amazement.
Beautiful, you were simply beautiful. He could still feel the burning sensation of your lips against his skin, a harsh shiver crawling its way up his spine.
He couldn't wait to catch you alone once more, maybe even push you up against an abandoned cell and swallow each of your delicate sounds as he fuc-
“Otto, what are you doing-“ His Captain’s voice came from beside him, his brother’s eyes watching him with confusion before he smirked.
“You knew.” Otto muttered at him, eyes boring into his brother’s smug face.
Axel simply shrugged, facing away from his sibling before looking over his shoulder.
“Aye, she forgot to bind her breasts one morning and well.. the morning air was quite chilly... Told her to go do her binds in my chambers before anyone else saw her. Cute little thing, isn't she?” Axel said, chuckling as Otto pushed him, his brother's jealousy all too obvious.
“I kid. But brother, be sure to check on her, I fear others will catch on as well.”
Otto watched from afar as you continued to scrub the deck, proud to see your shirt was still tightly closed and loose around your alluring form. Your eyes met, visage passive but your gorgeous eyes, oh, your painfully expressive eyes luring him in, winking at him before getting back to work.
Never had he been so immensely attracted to a woman, and here had been one, hiding in plain sight among the grossest and roughest men.
The thought alone made his insides squirm, wanting to watch you at all times, make sure you were safe, protect you if the need arose.
Oscar had watched the exchange, smirking to himself as he looked back at you beside him, scrubbing away.
It was painfully obvious that you were a woman, obvious to potentially anyone who would look a moment too long at you. His poor brother Otto hadn’t until just now, but Oscar could see it in his brother’s stance alone, he was smitten, undoubtably so.
Otto’s eyes met his own, his gaze fiery and questioning.
Oscar loved playing with fire, leaning towards you slowly as he kept eye contact with his brother, smirking at how agitated Otto seemed to be getting at the simple movement near you.
“Lad, what did Mr Otto want with you?” Oscar asked you, making you turn towards him, only to see him looking away, closer to you than he had been before. You leaned away slightly, fearing that he would discover you.
“Uh, to work harder.” You said lowly, vocal cords straining as you tried to speak as deeply as possible. He only hummed and returned to work, but not before reaching out and patting you on the back, the gesture simple but unnerving you either way.
For the next couple of days, you tried to avoid the shorter Viking pirate, his incessant casual touches making you uncomfortable, enough so for you to approach Otto about it one night.
He leaned against the ship’s railing, looking out at the dark sky, his large black coat opened to reveal his dark green vest underneath. He hadn’t noticed you yet, lost in his mind to whatever he was thinking about.
“Mr Otto.” You whispered loud enough, voice unhidden as you were both alone on deck. He startled, turning around quickly before exhaling, looking at you wryly with a smirk.
“Otto will suffice, älskling. Where is my dimwitted brother, are you not needing his attentions tonight?” He smoothly said, leaning back in his elbows against the ship, looking down at you with a hint of jealousy.
You had seen it before, and heard it in the voice of suitors fighting eachother for your hand, though the jealousy in Otto’s movements and voice surprised you. Why did he think you wanted his brother’s attention? Was he jealous of your ‘relationship’ with his sibling?
“His attentions? No, certainly not. Nor have I ever wanted them, he won't stop following me around and I...” you said with determination, words dying as a crew member passed you, heading down ship to go to bed.
“I don't want anyone to find out I am a woman.. it scares me that they won't be as kind as you Otto.” You whispered softly once alone with him, looking away from his serious gaze.
Self disgust washed over Otto in waves, realizing what he had just said outloud to you. Every scene he had witnessed between you and Oscar came back to the forefront of his mind, only now recognizing the signs of your discomfort as his jealousy died inside of him.
You hadn’t been willingly looking for Oscar’s attention, you hadn’t been delighting in his company. He would have a talk with his younger brother in the morning he decided, pushing himself off the ship’s railing, moving closer towards you.
“I apologize, I thought... What was it that you needed, Y/N?” Otto said with a frown before smiling down at you, taking in the way you looked in the moonlight. As the sound of footsteps of another crew member sounded out, making their way towards the both of you, Otto realized just how painfully beautiful you were right now, not wanting ANYONE to see you like this.
You took the hint though, his face most likely portraying his emotions as you smiled up at him, making your way towards Axel at the front of the ship. While the crew member voiced unimportant news to him, Otto felt it once more, a familiar lick of possessiveness as he watched Axel out an arm around your shoulder, looking out at the sea together.
Oscar knew it was time as he heard Otto bark order after order, crew members whispered, wondering what had caused the usually calm Bosun to be so uptight today.
He called to Otto in Swedish, demanding his help in the cells below ship, the secluded area quiet. They held no prisoners, but not for long...
Axel watched his brothers disappear down ship, wondering what Oscar was up to now, hand rising to sick his hair back once more.
His youngest brother had been right though, Otto’s jealous attitude towards any man who approached you was getting out of hand, jealous of his brothers for Pete’s sake.
You stood beside him today, your idle chat enjoyable, speaking of the life you had escaped, of your father, of the men who chased after your hand in marriage. No wonder you had boarded their ship, albeit a stupid idea for a young woman, he could see why you had done it.
Oscar appeared once more on deck, his smile too wide for Axel’s comfort. He knew his brother had done something, Otto never appearing behind him.
Finally, his brother met his gaze, head nodding towards the lower deck where- Ah.
“Y/N, go see Oscar, I think he means to ask you something.” Axel gently asked, leaning towards you more as for you to be the only one to hear him. You smiled and nodded, walking away.
You did as Oscar had asked, making your way below deck, down to the hooding cells, the area quiet-
Loud curses and grunts resonated in the chamber, words you couldn’t understand, but the voice all too familiar-
“Otto?” You called, rounding the corner to be met with the most decadent sight you had ever seen.
Here he was, chained to the wall by his wrists, coat and vest gone, chest bare and heavy in his anger. His skin was flushed, sitting on the hard wood floor, eyes wide as he took you in.
“Y/N- what-“ He started, voice cutting off as he noticed you lacking your coat, the item you so carefully used to hide your form.
“Where is your coat? Do you know the meaning of this?” He asked, lifting his wrists, relaxing his voice as he spoke to you out of fear of scaring you.
“O-Oscar took it, and no, he only asked me to come down here and uh, check on you.” You said softly, lying through your teeth. Oscar had taken it alright, but he had told you what to do. It was far from an order of course, he had simply asked you if you fancied his jealous brother. And here you were, making your way into his cell, determined as you shut it behind you.
Your words had gotten the expected rise out of him, though his eyes roamed your form either way, taking it in for the first time without your coat.
“Has anyone else seen you?” Otto asked, voice sounding more gruff as he strained against the chained handcuffs. He was quiet as he watched you come closer, nearly gasping as you sat directing beside his clothed thigh.
“No, only you and ever only you.” You said, deciding not to hide the want in your voice, the need that he made you feel, your eyes lowering to look at his exposed chest, loving each area you looked at before climbing once more to his eyes, thousands of emotions hidden behind them.
“Y/N, you don’t mean that.” He whispered, eyes darting to your lips as your tongue peaked out to lick them. Oh, he was breathing louder, squirming in his spot as he tried to cross his legs, lacking the room to. Otto looked away, stubborn, cheeks heating and chains moving loudly as he tried to hide his erection from you.
“But I do, you’ve been too busy being jealous to notice my stares and gestures. But now, I won't take it anymore.” You whispered back, deciding it was enough and rising, only to sit firmly in his lap, his erection hard against your pants. He groaned out, hands trying to reach your body, chains rattling loudly once more.
Otto was determined though as he leaned forward instead, kissing crashing onto yours in a searing kiss, your hands making their way into his hair, tugging softly. Noises escaped you as he lifted his legs, bringing you closer by default, hands finally meeting your thighs.
“I want you Otto, only you, do you hear me? I don't want any other man.” You gasped out, loving the way he was desperately grinding up against you, hands gripping the side of your thighs like his life depended on it.
“Then have me, claim me as yours and let everyone know who you belong to älskling.” He bit out, cursing as you started to grind down on his erection with equal fervour, hands on his shoulders for support.
“Must I beg, siren of the sea? Is that what you want from me?” He asked softly in jest, leaning forward to kiss your throat. You smiled and shook your head, giving him one last dizzying kiss before standing off of him, pulling your blouse out of your pants-
“Keep it, Y/N, please, keep it, I do not want anyone else seeing you.” Otto groaned out, eyes taking in every part of you as you smiled, accepting. You threw your binds and vest on the bench, proceeding with your bottoms and bloomers, chains rattling as he was greeted with a view of your lovely backside.
You sat on his thighs, looking into his gaze whilst your fingers untied his belt and sash, his hips rising up enough for you to pull them down, erection standing proud, begging for your attention. His discarded coat that Oscar had left under him would serve perfectly you thought, saving poor Otto from wood chipped on his behind.
“Y/N, please, come closer, let me kiss you.” He begged, trying to lean closer, desperation oozing off of him now as you came closer, moaning at the way you lifted in the air and held his erection.
You were soaked wet, your core aching for him, leaning down forward as you took his length, biting your lip hard at the slight pain.
He froze, feeling it, watching your face morph before it hit him like a tidal wave: you were a virgin.
“Y/N, hey, slowly- ugh, you should have told me.” Otto said against your collarbone, kissing your skin, trying to help appease any pain you felt. Breasts rubbed against his bare chest, your arms wrapping around his neck as you continued to take him, face nuzzling his neck.
“I'm sorry I didn’t tell you, I needed you now, I couldn’t wait. Now please Otto, shut up and let me fuck you.” You grinned, lifting your hips before taking him all in again, setting a steady pace as his large hands followed your thighs, his mouth too occupied in biting and sucking your chest and neck to protest any further.
Oscar grinned as he heard grunts and moans escape the closed door towards the cells, guarding it closely for anyone who dared to try and enter. It didn’t matter though, everyone could hear the both of you, Axel’s cold gaze making anyone who tried to speak up die inside.
Only when you felt yourself get close to ecstasy did you grin, stopping for but a moment to pull out a key from your blouse pocket, metal glinting in the light.
Otto looked at it for a moment, surprised in his eyes.
“You had it all along? Kärlek, my love, untie me please.” He asked, holding his wrists up with an adorable pout on his lips.
You did as asked, handcuffs barely falling off his last wrist before he held you and stood, fucking you against the metal bars of the cell, kissing your neck with passion. Your lithe hands held onto him, his name on your tongue like a prayer while he brought you over the edge, delightfully forcing him to follow you soon after.
You panted together, holding onto one another, his hold of you never slipping. Otto nuzzled into your neck once more, smiling softly as you did the same, running your fingers through his hair. He was gentle as he let you down onto the ground, loving the way his seed ran down your thighs.
“You look divine.” He uttered, eyes sparkling as he reached for his enormous coat and pulled it over your shoulders. His hands reached for your blouse before pausing, wondering if this was what you truly wanted, to stay hidden forever.
Otto let out a shout in a language you now understood was his mother tongue, a similar yell from Oscar up top sounding out moments after.
“Y/N, do you.. If you wanted, to not have to hide, I would protect you, as would my brothers.” He offered softly, gazing into your eyes with unashamed want and adoration. You smiled wide, nodding.
“I would like that.” You answered, standing on your tippy toes to lay a kiss on his lips. He smiled against you, lips opening to speak-
“You won't get much of a reaction from Axel though, he’s used to seeing my hard nipples each morning.” You teased, giggling loudly as Otto grabbed you, kissing your skin and growling.
The Brother’s and movies
Lucifer
v  Lucifer tells anyone who asks that he enjoys serious, dramatic movies set during the wartimes the type that get Oscar nominations but are quite intense and a little dull.
v  Lucifer however holds a dirty little secret that his prideful nature will not allow him to outwardly share.
v  He LOVES Christmas movies.
v  The end of year holiday movie’s just alleviate all the stress in him. He is so happy while watching that he can barely keep the grin off his face.
v  DO NOT watch Home Alone with him and Mammon. Lucifer every 2 minutes is mouthing off against Mammon stating that HE is the Kevin of the family.
v  His favourite holiday movie is the Santa Clause.
v  The holidays are so special to him and the movies just capture the atmosphere and joy he feels.
v  He loves Christmas because he finally gets a break from his duties, he can have a fun little party with his beloved brothers and friends, he receives and gives meaningful gifts and even Satan is nice to him on Christmas.
v  When you come to the Devildom you bet Lucifer is watching Love Actually with you and every single romantic Christmas movie so he can feel enjoy the warm fuzzy feelings assiociated with his favourite holiday with his beloved Y/n.
Mammon
v  Before you came the Devildom Mammon solely watched hardcore triple X action movies. Unless on movie night with his brothers, then he’s forced to watch some boring artsy flick or some anime junk movie .*cough cough Levi*
v  He was a total dudebro and loved PointBreak.He owns the full collection of the Fast and the Furious. What’s not to love with the live fast, die hard law breaker lifestyle?
v  The man also lives for heist movies, Oceans 11? He has it memorised! He thinks about how HE would be a huge asset to the team and dreams about pulling off some high action super cool heist with you.
v  When Y/n comes to the Devildom it is like a flip of a switch for Mammon.
v  He says he can handle horror movies but you both know that’s a big fat lie so only insist on watching them if you wish to torture him.
v  He will complain and insult your choices of chick flicks and romantic comedies but he is enraptured.
v  HE LOVES it, he watches a couple of them in secret and daydreams about you and him as the main couple.
v  This man wants to pull a Heath Ledger and serenade you to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” in front of his brothers, Diavolo, RAD, heck even the whole Devildom.
v  He is living for these romantic comedies and constantly tries to recreate his favourite cutesy moments with you. (Did he get you “special wishing sparkles” and told you to close your eyes and make a wish? Did he then give you a shy blushy kiss when you opened your eyes and say wish granted? Who knows that’s between you and him.)
v  Oh and you bet he’s crying when the couple’s fight and cheering so hard when they finally get together. He can’t help it he’s a secret romantic. Don’t be so loud about it Y/n! He has a tough guy attitude to maintain.
Leviathan
v  Anime movies. Need I go on?
v  He has the Blu-ray special editions of Studio Ghibli movies and he loves watching them on rainy cold days snuggled under a blanket with you.
v  He loves Ponyo for obvious water and fish related reasons. You guys have defiantly done cosplay photo shoots, he was Ponyo, you were Sosuke and Henry was the fishy sisters.
v  Other than anime movie’s Levi is a 80’s movie aficionado. He has seen every 80’s movie. He particularly relates to the high school movies for the theme of the awkward nerdy guy getting the super cool, popular girl of their dreams.
v  He does enjoy the nerdier comic book, big budget action movies, like Kick-Ass. He and Satan have faced off against each other regarding whether DC or Marvel movies are better. (He prefers the funny antics associated with Marvel plus he’s a Peter Parker fanboy)
v  He also is a huge fan of any Edgar Wright movie since seeing Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. (He let out a Woaahhhh when he saw the comics)
v  May Lord Diavolo have mercy upon you if the movie is a book or tv show adaption because Levi will not shut up during the movie. (He will pause the movie he’s not THAT inconsiderate.) You will not have a moment of peace after the movie has ended. He simply must share every single thought he had on what the movie did right and what the movie did wrong. Then he has to show you his fan casting list of who would better fit the roles and then just when you think it’s over he pushes you to re-watch the movie with him to listen to the director commentary.
v  Levi will generally save his commentary for after the movie if you got to the movie theatre with him. Something about the change of atmosphere and the excitement that comes from the movie watching experience just puts him in a calmer less frantic mood and you can enjoy a simple quiet movie date for an hour or 2 before your ear will be talked off.
 Satan
v  DO NOT WATCH BOOK TO MOVIE ADAPTATIONS WITH HIM! HE IS WORSE THAN LEVI AND TWICE AS BRUTAL IN HIS CRITICS.
v  Now that that fact is out of the way Satan is a mystery fan. He enjoys the cheesy who dunnit type movie’s especially if the detective solving the mystery is very cool and charismatic with a fun catch phrase.
v  One that caught him of guard and quickly became his favourite was Knives Out. A clear mystery with a wacky bunch of characters all with misleading facts and motivations. Additionally he was thrown for a loop on the ending so he really enjoyed it for its unpredictability.
v  Of course Satan enjoys DC movies I mean he and Levithan read the comics and he is a clear believer that the serious tone and consequence from DC makes them the far superior super hero franchise.
v  Contrary to popular belief Satan does not like documentaries, he gets restless and bored watching them, but you keep putting on those boring long documentaries because it leads to a very steamy make out session with a slightly huffy Satan who had been complaining that his movie choice would have been much more enjoyable. Hush hush Satan we are not watching the Blue Planet to sate our curiosity of the inner workings of the environment but rather to quiet your adorable little tuts and huffs with soft sweet kisses and gentle touches.
v  The double edged sword that comes from picking a documentary is that Satan will indeed make you suffer by making his pick a terrifying horror movie since he thinks you are oh so adorable when you’re frightened. He thinks it’s really cute when you ask him to walk you to the bathroom because you’re afraid of the big scary monsters and it’s even cuter to him when you throw your face into his chest and refuse to look until the scary scene is over. Haaa he cannot resist and must pat your head and give you a small peck.
Asmo
v  When one watches a movie with Asmo, one does not simply see it, one lives it.
v  Asmo loves 90s and early 2000s movies about the pretty popular girls because he lives to see their fabulous closets, outfits and their dewy supple skin. He’s a huge fan of Clueless, Legally Blonde and Bring It on.
v  He also simply dies for those cult classic like, Mommie Dearest, Troop Beverly Hills, Drop Dead Gorgeous, Marie Antoinette, Death Becomes Her and many more. You guys put on face masks grab a couple of tasty cupcakes and start reciting the movies line for line bursting into giggles every time, that’s how many times you’ve seen them.
v  Asmo gets the appeal of campy movie’s that have not been appreciated for their odd charm so when you come along you bet he’s going to be shouting out his favourite one liners and you fire the responses right back. He’s in love.
v  What he loves most about the campy movies is the fabulosity and authenticity that comes from the movie’s just wanting to tell a great story and celebrate the oddities and dramatics of the characters. His favourites are the ones with drag queens particularly Priscilla Queen of the Desert, To Wong Foo and The Birdcage. How is he not meant to simply adore the beautiful wigs, costumes, the attitudes of the queens and the sharp, dry, witty humour.
v  Big blockbuster wise Asmo is inclined to see any musical, and yes for 3 weeks straight he will sing the songs of the musical, much  to the displeasure of his brothers but to the delight of you and Solomon who cheer him on and request encores. (Yes you all went to see Cats together, yes you dragged Satan along. Yes everyone but especially Satan was traumatised and yes Asmo did drape himself across every available surface in the House of Lamentation and belted out Memory for practically the whole Devildom to enjoy. Enough with the questions!)
v  Asmo’s favourite musical is Rocky Horror Picture show, you have monthly viewings where Asmo dresses up as Frank en Furter and performs…well not for you more on top of you.
v  Movies with Asmo are always fun treats, you both have a great time with each other and walk away from the movie’s feeling more emotional and closer with one another.
Beel
v  Beel’s taste in movies is similar to his taste in food he is not picky and enjoys a wide variety.
v  He enjoys mafia movies of any variety He likes the familial bond and the trust between members but does not enjoy the double crossing, it makes him feel sad.
v  Other than that he lives for the lively mood, the Italian food, the dramatic situations and the action sequences.
v  He has seen a few animated movies and his favourite is Brother Bear, it reminds him of him and Belphie and makes him soft.
v  He does actually does like twin movies because the plots are always outlandish and funny to him at least.
v  When it comes to movies where food is central to the plot, do not get him started. The amount of times you had to pause Ratatouille so he could get his 20th snack in the last 10 minutes was astonishing. He get’s extra hungry watching the movie but generally enjoys chatting to you about the food making process of each dish rather than paying attention to the plot. (You: Would you prepare food made by a rat? Him: Well I ate Solomon’s cooking once so even a rat’s cooking would be better than that)
v  He loves to ask which dish would you eat when restaurant scenes come up because he’s curious of your taste while watching the movie and sometimes he’ll stop paying attention the movie and instead just watch your reactions.
v  Generally speaking any movie suggestion he’s fine with as long as he gets to spend time with you and can binge on delicious movie snacks.
Belphie
v  The total opposite of Beel, Belphie is a total film snob and will harshly berate your movie choice and say ‘You really made me stay awake for this crap fest.’
v  He doesn’t mean to be mean (yes he does but he doesn’t like making you sad) he just has a very particular taste for movies and if he’s going to extend the effort to stay awake and pay attention he wants it to be worth his time.
v  He is actually the one in the house who does enjoy documentaries. What can he say some habits die hard and he’s still a total Earth nut even though he human-phobic.
v  Not to mention the gentle voice of David Attenbourough soothes him until he is just barely awake so when he finally drifts off he dreams of the wonderful parts of Earth and the miracles or nature.
v  He is a fan of Shakespeare movies particularly the rich dark one’s that are a bit more violent. The atmosphere surrounding them just fits and the plot is a classic so why watch a cheap knock-off of what he has dubbed perfect writing.
v  This man is an emo so of course he’s going to watch the slightly pretentious movies with poetry, his favourites are Dead Poets Society, The Crow and V for Vendetta.
v  On movie nights he is selfish! He insists that you watch his movie first then he immediately falls asleep after it ends. He feels no shame over this.
v  He hates twin themed movies, he thinks they’re cheap and over use the same gag of ‘Whoa they’re twins.’ (Sorry Mary-Kate and Ashley Belphie does not like you guys at all)
v  He watches brother themed movies with Beel and gets really soft because he loves his twin so much.
v  If you truly force him he will relent and watch your movie with you but he will make fun of it and bully you every second he is awake and the only way to silence him is to cuddle up close, let him lay his head on your chest or shoulder, massage his head or give him tons of kisses.
v  Generally speaking a bad movie buddy but a great cuddle buddy for movie nights.
Pairing: Oscar x Finnie!Reader
Timeframe: Season 2 - Season 3 (SPOILERS)
Summary: It’s hard what they have had to go through, but they’ve always had each other.
masterlist
A/N: lemme make one thing clear, siblings who have had to assume parental roles in their younger sibling’s life because of incompetent parents are nothing to glamourise or sensationalise. that shit is so hard and so unfair on everyone involved, because it robs so many kids of the luxury of getting to be a kid. no one deserves to have to grow up so fast. i am so touched by how this was represented this season. cheers xox
I couldn’t believe my eyes. Monse was packing a bag and really about to make a decision I could already tell she would live to regret. With Cesar and her broken up, and out last conversation being a tumultuous argument, it seemed she didn’t care about the people she was leaving behind.
“Are you really gonna keep ignoring me, Monse?”
My little sister turns to glare at me, only to turn back around and zip her bag up, before placing the strap over her shoulder. For the past few weeks, she said all but two words to me (”fuck you”), the rest of our communication were made up of me talking and her glaring holes through all the sides of my head.
“Dad?” Monse calls out, as she heads into our kitchen, with me following after her. Our dad was drinking a mug of coffee, when he turned up to see us standing on the opposite side of our kitchen island. “Can we go now? I’m starting to sense a negative presence in the room”
“Oh grow up,” I retorted, folding my arms as once again, Monse spoke of me indirectly, but glared at me in the most direct way possible.
“Actually sweetie,” my dad began, before awkwardly reaching for the car keys in his pocket, and handing them to me as he continued. “I’m gonna let Y/n drive you there.”
Monse may as well have thrown a full-blown tantrum with the way she scoffed aloud, crossed her arms and stormed off to where my dad’s car was parked. I predicted that perhaps Jamal’s dramatic tendencies were beginning to rub off on her.
The first few minutes of the car ride were silent. Monse had opted to listening to music as opposed to listening to me, but when her phone died, I quietly thanked the universe for giving me a chance to make amends with my sister.
“Monse?”
“What?” She answered harshly, turning her head to the view outside her window as opposed to looking at me.
“... I’m sorry, okay?” She shifted her posture so she was sitting taller, and glanced my way for a split second- sure sign that she was willing to listen to me, finally. I wasn’t one to be the first to say sorry, Spooky could tell you all about that. “You have a right to know who our mom is, and I shouldn’t have tried to stop you from finding out.”
Monse nodded, which was enough for me to feel lighter now that things were better between us. The next few minutes were silent against, but it was far more bearable this time around.
“She’s changed you know,” Monse whispers only just loud enough for me to hear. And just like that, my heart dropped. I was so afraid of her getting hurt, but it seemed like she was already setting herself up for that without even realising. “You could stay for dinner... See it for yourself.”
I sighed. I wanted to be honest with Monse. I wanted to tell her the brutal truth about what happened between our parents from the time we were born to the time she left us for good. But seeing how happy Monse was, packing her things and looking to spend time with the one person she’s yearned to know for so long. What kind of a person would I be to ruin that for her?
“Maybe another time, Mon.”
That’s all I needed to say for Monse to drop the topic. The fact that I didn’t respond in an outrage was enough for her, it seemed. Little did she know how hard it was to keep myself from yelling and bawling both at the same time.
Once we got to Julia’s house, I helped Monse with the one suitcase she had packed, while she carried the other backpack she brought with her. We didn’t even need to knock for the door to swing open, and for Julia to embrace Monse in a warm hug. Nice to know she was capable of showing affection to her daughter.
As they pulled apart from one another, I coughed quietly to fill the evidently awkward silence. When I looked up, I saw Julia gazing at me, tears brimming in her eyes. How I wished I had just sprinted to my dad’s car and drove off. I signed up for making amends with Monse, not reuniting with the woman who ruined my life.
“Y/n?” She place her hand over her mouth, and inhaled deeply. I stared at her, emotionless, because I knew getting angry or upset would make things worse between Monse and I. I didn’t need that. “You’ve grown up so beautifully.”
That was far different from how she treated me in the few years she stuck around. I wanted to slap her then and there.
“I’m gonna go say hi to the kids,” Monse said, as she wheeled her suitcase inside, right after taking her shoes off beside their coat rack. 2 seconds in and she was already changing her habits to fit in. I didn’t want to know what she’d be like when I pick her up in a month or so. I secretly hoped she would be begging to come home by then.
With Monse gone, Julia’s expression turned from joyful to regretful. I already had my fair share in life to know white tears when I saw them. For some reason, I stuck around long enough witness them fall again.
“Y/n... I am so sorry,” she wept. She had the audacity to cry in front of me, like she was the one who dealt with the brunt of her actions. I knew then that she hadn’t changed. Not enough for me to ever consider sticking around for dinner, so much as a conversation.
“Monse didn’t specify how long she’ll be staying, but she has my number and unlimited texts.” I wasn’t about to be vulnerable in front of this woman. I wasn’t about to give her the satisfaction of talking out what she did to her daughter. She didn’t deserve that. She never would. “She knows most of the important stuff she needs to know, but if anything comes up, just get her to call or text me.”
Julia nods silently, understanding that just because Monse wanted a relationship with her, didn’t mean she was any less dead to me than she was the last time she abandoned my family.
I was about to turn around and leave, but there was one thing I needed to get off my chest. Not for my sake. Not for Julia’s. But for Monse’s.
“She’s been looking forward to this for a really long time,” I began, looking over Julia’s shoulder and watching Monse run around the living room with Julia’s youngest kids. “Longer than you know... So I swear to God, Julia... If you hurt her the way you hurt me, I will make sure you live to regret it.”
The way she held her breath, as I coldly threatened her, was enough for me to be satisfied. I drove off without saying goodbye. Without even looking back to see if Julia was still standing on her front doorstep, but I knew she was. I wonder if she understood the irony in that.
With little to do, now that Monse was out of the house and my dad was getting ready to hit the road again, I decided to stop at Oscar’s on my way back home. For most of my life, he was the person I went to when I needed to vent to someone who got me.
And that was the thing that made me fall for him so quickly. He just... got me.
“You saw her?” He asked, as he fixed the both of us cups of coffee. Neither one of us were going to be sleeping anytime soon. Not with all the shit we had going on in our lives.
“Yeah,” I answered sadly, fiddling with the mug handle. Spooky took hold of my other hand; a thing he’d do anytime I started fidgeting with something. “She hasn’t changed... I wish Monse would see that.”
“You spent your whole life protecting her from Julia,” he reasoned. “She never had to know what she did to you guys... You didn’t want her to hurt the way you did growing up.”
I nodded. He was right, but that didn’t make the situation any less painful than it already was.
“I’m scared it’s gonna happen though,” I whispered, staring down at my mug as a way of keeping me from tearing up. “You should’ve seen how happy she was... How much trust she has that Julia’s actually changed.”
Oscar runs his hand over his mouth and down his chin, before gently squeezing my hand.
“She has to find out somehow,” he stated, looking at me apologetically because nothing he could say could change what would inevitably happen. “We can’t protect them from everything... no matter how badly we wanna.”
And we couldn’t. I couldn’t protect Monse from our mom. Oscar couldn’t protect Cesar the world of the Santos. But we really wanted to. We really really did.
***
It had been a good handful of months since Monse and I saw Julia last. Much like I predicted, she hadn’t changed. And unfortunately for Monse, this meant she had to find out the hard way that our mother was an awful person.
“You’re really not gonna go to the funeral?”
Monse and my dad were both dressed in their nicest black attire, whilst I was still wearing what I had gone to sleep in. I told them I wouldn’t step foot in Brentwood again, but it seemed that they only now understood how serious I was.
“Y/n,” my dad always spoke softly to the two of us, particularly when we were at a disagreement. “I really think you should come with us.”
I took a spoonful of cereal to my mouth and chewed loudly, before speaking again. This was my way of emphasising how little I cared for the matter at hand. Julia was dead to me a long time ago. I already did my grieving. She didn’t deserve so my respect, so I wasn’t about to pay that to her anytime soon.
“I’m not coming.” I looked at my dad and shook my head. He sighed, and took hold of the car keys, before grabbing his coat. Monse however wasn’t having any of it.
“I can’t believe you,” she said loudly, despite my dad’s attempts at calling her to go to the car. “Our mother is dead, Y/n. Don’t you think it’s important you go to her funeral?!”
I placed my bowl down abruptly, making my dad walk back into the kitchen, because anytime Monse and I dropped what was in our hands, shit was about to go down.
“She’s been dead to me for a long time, Monse, I don’t owe that woman anything.”
I could feel my dad’s eyes widen, and I knew I was beginning to cross a line. Talking bad about Julia to my dad and Oscar before was one thing, but now that she was dead, and since this was Monse I was talking to, we were in uncharted territory.
“What about me, or her kids? You’re being so selfish, Y/n!” I ignored her and began putting my dishes away. It hurt hearing her say what she did, but I wasn’t in the mood to argue. Monse, however, apparently was. “You know you’re a lot more like her than you wanna believe.”
And I thought I was crossing a line.
“You better watch your mouth, Monse,” I growled, trying to keep myself from throwing something at my little sister. A spoon perhaps? You have no right to say that to me. Unlike her, I’ve looked out for you from the beginning.”
We moved away from the kitchen island, and were now standing opposite each other, with all but my dad in our way. He held both his hands out, almost as a precaution in case one of us threw a punch.
“Oh please,” she spat. My dad glanced over at me. Knowing where this was heading, he knew how personal this was becoming for me especially. “I never asked you to become my mother.”
I gasped quietly, only just loud enough for my dad and I to hear.
“Y/n-”
I shook my head. There was no coming from this, at least not today. No matter how softly my dad spoke to me or how hurt Monse was by everything that had happened, I couldn’t bring myself to pretend like things were okay. They weren’t. They hadn’t been for a while, even before we found out about Julia.
No longer able to stand in the same room as Monse, I walked out of the kitchen and out of the house, making sure not to tear up until I was positive that I was definitely on my own. This wouldn’t last for long though because, just as I did in any time of crisis or mental breakdown, I headed towards Spooky’s place.
And just as well, by the time I got there, I saw his father walking away from the house, a duffel bag in his clutched hand- the same he had when he arrived from prison. I waited around the corner until he left, before approaching Oscar.
I could tell that whatever argument they were having, it wasn’t one I needed to get involved in.
“Spooky?”
Once realising I had seen what happened, he shakes his head, runs his hand over his mount and sits on the steps of his front door. Making no sudden movements, I slowly sat beside him.
“Did he leave?”
He flares his nostrils and looks up at the streetlights before nodding.
Shifting closer to him, I placed on hand around his waist and rested my head on his shoulder, only after placing a small kiss on the bare skin.
“You not going to the funeral?”
I shook my head, before leaning into him. He takes his arm and wraps it around my frame, allowing me to lean into his chest. He was so good at showing me love, despite never receiving any from the people he needed it most from.
“How are you gonna tell Cesar?” I asked, looking up at him concerningly.
“... I don’t know,” he sighs.
“Why do we have to go through this?” I cried, placing my head in my hands. Oscar rubs my back gently all the while. “It sucks so much, you know? When Monse was staying at Brentwood she looked so happy... Why couldn’t we have had that growing up? Julia can give that to her white kids... but not to us.”
It was a rhetorical question of course. Spooky and I had our fair share of pain. We both knew how messed up things are for no apparent reason.
“You know she wrote her a letter?” Again, a rhetorical question. I knew for a fact that Monse told Spooky about it in a drunken haze. “Despite everything that happened, Monse still cared about her.”
“... How about you?”
My lips began to tremble, because I finally began to understand why I held so much anger towards Julia. Why, even when she showed some kindness to Monse, I still couldn’t look at her without feeling so much rage in my heart.
As I began to tear up again, Oscar held me until I started to recover. I hated how much power that woman still ad over me. That even when she projected all of her internalised insecurities onto me for a good chunk of my life, I was still distraught that she was gone. That we’d never be able to reconcile our relationship.
The sun began to set when I rested my head on Spooky’s shoulder, and stared out into the block we called home; thinking about our two siblings, of whom we had to look out for. Of the innocence we were robbed of. Of the childhood we never got to enjoy.
“Do you think they’re gonna be okay?” He asks, staring just as intently as I was into the streets.
“Yeah... They will.” And I really believed that.
“What about us?” This time he turns his to me and gazes into my eyes, emphasising how serious and intimate his question was. “Think we’ll make it?”
I couldn’t think of an answer that would accurately encapsulate my enthusiasm and confidence, so I took hold of his face and kissed him softly. And I could feel him smiling as I did so, pulling me closer to him with the strength of his arms.
Dimmed Lights (Pt.2)
-------------------------
It had been about a month since Remus' wedding, Roman was starting school soon.
Roman despised school.
Soulmates kissing in the halls, marks so bright it was almost blinding. Students asking him why he hadnt found his soulmates yet, asking why his markings were oh so dull.
But his least favorite thing about the school, was the school's favorite power couple.
Roman had known for a while that goth kids were going to end up taking over one day, but this just proved it.
Janus Belgrave was a year above Roman, he was tall and he had heterochromia and canines that were so sharp they might as well have been knives. He always seemed to know everything about a person by looking at them. He was always wearing a hat or a cape, regardless of dress code formality. He had a soul mark shaped like purple and black flowers down one side of his face.
Virgil Liddell was in the same grade as Roman. He was short and shy but he could probably drop kick someone if they made him feel even the slightest bit threatened. He had bright lilac eyes and darker purple hair. His soul mark was in the form of a two-headed snake that wrapped around his neck and collarbone.
The two of them always wore much more clothing than Roman would have deemed necessary, and would get very defensive when asked about it. But, goth kids were weird, so he wasnt going to judge.
Roman sat on his bed, staring at the rows and rows of clothing in his closet. He supposed it was a good thing he didnt have to try fitting himself in there to. After a long while Roman finally decided on a red hoodie with two white stripes in the middle as well as stripes down the sleeves, a pair of shorts, and black boots.
"Roman! Breakfast!" Roman's mother called from downstairs. Roman let out a sigh that wouldve been worthy of an oscar had the timing been convenient. He rushed down the stairs and stuffed his face quickly.
The bus ride wasnt much different than usual, Roman head his head pressed against the window, that way it was much harder to see any of his classmates soul marks.
It was stupid that they were able to find soul mates so young in his opinion, why didnt the marks just develop over time instead? Why couldnt they just be kids without having to worry about who their soulmates would be? But of course, Roman had decided that his lack of understanding for soul mate ages must have just been his jealousy talking. After all, how was a boy with no soul mate supposed to know anything about finding one.
He also supposed that having no friends didnt help that. After all, people with soul marks tended to avoid the Soulless like the plague, it was incredibly rare for someone to be born with no mark at all, and they didnt want to risk that spreading.
So Roman sat alone, every day, during class, lunch, breaks. And he pretended not to care, pretended he didnt notice the suspicious glances the others gave his tattoos, or the rumors or the laughing or anything else that the school tried to throw at him.
"Is this seat taken?" Roman looked away from the window. In front of him was a person with short pastel blue and purple hair, a white dress with a mint green belt and sleeve-straps, and white boots, as well as round glasses with clear frames.
"No, of course not," Roman said simply. The person sat down, fixing their hair slightly.
"I'm Hestia, she/her," Hestia smiled.
"Roman, he/him," Roman said, and then he noticed what seemed to be white lines etched across Hestia's skin.
Hestia seemed to have noticed the staring, because she pulled a jacket over the markings soon after.
"They arent soulmarks if that's what you're thinking, I dont have any, these are from something else," she said, looking away slightly.
"Oh- I didnt mean-" Roman rubbed the back of his neck slightly. Finally, he pulled down the side of his jacket and shirt to show off the tattoos. Hestia's eyes widened and she smiled slightly.
"Are they nicer here? The middle school was never very nice about it," Hestia said, Roman bit his lip slightly.
"Well, they arent rude necessarily, but of course you must know how it is for us," he said sadly.
"Yeah. . . It's so stupid, we can still have relationships, even if we dont have soulmarks, after all they're just for relationships that or more than ordinary friendship, it's not like having no markings means I cant make someone a cake or something," Hestia said bitterly, scratching at the lines on her arms.
"Yeah, and does it make sense to you that we have them from birth? Like why do children have to worry about suddenly glowing in the middle of the playground. It seems a bit contrived if you ask me," Roman said.
"Yeah! I know a person who found their soulmate when they were in sixth grade!" Hestia said. People on the bus were giving the two of them scandalized looks, but at this point Roman didnt really care. He finally had someone to talk to who was like him, who agreed with him and didnt think it was a brutal tragedy that he had no marks.
As the bus ride neared its end Roman and Hestia exchanged numbers, she was a freshman and he was a junior so they knew they were unlikely to have any classes together, but both had agreed that they would meet up after school when they could manage.
But now that he was off the bus, it was back to acting like a terrified gazelle in a jungle of stripes and spots.
Of course, Roman was used to that feeling.
What he wasnt used to was being shoved against a locker by a man a little less than a foot shorter than him, kissed, and then left standing confused in the middle of what seemed to be a very intense argument.
"See! I told you I can catch people off guard! I'm not that loud!" From the looks of it, Goth² was having a very intense debate, and Roman seemed to have found himself right in the center.
"I didnt say you couldnt at all, I just said you're not very good with subtlety," Janus replied, smirking. Virgil's face seemed to be going redder by the minute.
"Oh like you're so good at sneaking around with your- height!" Janus let out a laugh.
"Aaawww, is the chihuahua mad because the Great Dane's better at pranks?" Janus said, ruffling Virgil's hair.
Roman coughed slightly, he hadnt meant to do it, but it seemed to get the two boys attention very easily.
"Ah- yes, Virgil, mind explaining so the damsel you've distressed doesnt think hes ruined a relationship?" Janus said, Roman's face went scarlet.
"Sorry- yeah I couldve probably gone with something else but I'm not exactly a quick thinker ok!" Virgil said, pouting.
"O-oh its alright-" Roman said, trying to cover the rapid blush spreading across his face.
"How about this, to make it up to you, why dont you sit at lunch with us? You're always sitting alone and I highly doubt that its healthy for you," Janus said, smiling.
Roman froze like a deer in headlights, all he could think to do was nod and accept the slips of paper handed to him by the two boys.
"What. The fwuh. Just happened." Was all he could say when they left.
Jim’s Best Friend
Part Sixteen - Love F*cking Sucks
Tumblr media
Word Count: 2300
Author’s Note: I love this chapter, I’m not going to lie. A chance for Y/N to interact with Michael and Dwight and Pam a bit more. Update in two days, it’s my mum’s birthday tomorrow so I won’t have the time. And if you want tagged, let me know!
WARNING: none.
May, 2007.
Being the office pariah was hard work.
Despite talking to Karen, the office was still divided, Jim wasn't talking to you, and now you had managed to ruin what little friendship you had with Kelly since you agreed to go to Phyllis' wedding with Ryan. In hindsight, it was a bad move, but you still decided to go through with it, and as the big day came a week later, Ryan picked you up at your apartment in a handsome suit, meeting you at the door with a smile and a rose in hand.
"Oh, wow... Ryan, you really shouldn't have." You smiled and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, accepting the flower that matched your pastel pink dress.
"Oh, it's nothing..." He shrugged, and with that he led you to the car, opening the passenger door for you. Once you were both settled in the car, Ryan took off towards Pam's apartment, per request. You hadn't wanted anything to be too serious between Ryan and you, so Pam suggested she carpool with you both. You had hastily agreed, and Pam hurried from her flat to the car in a gorgeous mauve dress, jumping in the backseat as Ryan tried his best not to glare.
"Thank you guys so much for the ride." Pam said as Ryan pulled out once more, this time for the Scranton Unitarian Church. You reached behind your seat and squeezed Pam's hand in greeting.
"So, correct me if I'm wrong... But did Phyllis steal our wedding stationery?" You asked, and Pam nodded fast, her eyes widening. When it all came down to it, you had planned more of Pam's wedding than Roy ever did, and the pair of you had began talking about it with nostalgia as the wedding you shared.
"You noticed it too! I thought I was going crazy." She chuckled a little, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "I thought it was a little too suspicious how involved Phyllis got towards the final stages of wedding planning... $10 says she copied something else."
"You can't really think Phyllis would do that..." Ryan interrupted, laughing nervously. You and Pam just looked him over.
"If you are so sure, bet on it. I'm with Pam on this one though..." You dared him, and Ryan sighed, giving you a little look before smiling and nodding, taking the bet.
--
By the time the reception rolled around, Ryan was out by about $70, paying Pam a tenner for every thing Phyllis stole from her wedding plans, with you as the unbiased judge. From the wedding band Scrantonicity, Kevin so lovingly on drums and lead vocals, to the flower arrangements and even the wedding dress, Phyllis had taken Pam's wedding and just changed the names on the invite. What began as something that had bummed Pam out soon turned into a fun game, the three of you making comments all night on the similarities. When Roy made his way over about halfway through the night, he remarked on the flowers, and the three of you couldn't stop laughing at the inside joke that had been formed.
The ceremony could have gone better, Michael trying his very best to steal the limelight, and Kelly had turned up in white to try and torment Ryan. You even heard through the grapevine that Jim had Dwight on the lookout for wedding crashers, and a part of you wished to have been a part of the joke. But he wasn't talking to you, not the other way around.
By hour two, Michael had been told to leave.
By hour three, Ryan and Kelly had gotten back together. It was not in any way surprising, and you were honestly glad, since Ryan turned out to be a terrible bore, and he wouldn't shut up about the work website you had talked about the week before. You were going to turn to Pam for intelligent conversation, but she had ended up disappearing with Roy.
By hour four, you had exhausted the singles market, and after spotting Phyllis' nephew Jordan headed your way, now with a soul patch and fedora, you decided it was a good idea to go have a cigarette, or four. You found your way to the church's garden area, and while a part of you wondered if smoking on hallowed ground was really appropriate, you spotted the preacher over the road with a cigar in hand, and decided to just say fuck it.
"I thought you quit that stuff." a voice spoke up as you took the first drag of the stick, and you turned to find Michael sitting on a bench beside a rather old man. When he had been kicked out of the party earlier, Dwight had refused to let him back inside, and you had honestly thought he would have just gone home.
"Old habits die hard... Kinda picked it back up again." You said casually, taking another hit. A part of you wanted to stub it out, you could see the disappointment in Michael's eyes, but you couldn't quite do it.
"Well, if you want to die of lung cancer, Y/N, I won't let you do it alone." Michael laughed, and walked over, taking the smoke from you and breathing in. He coughed excessively on the exhale, and you patted his back. "Jeez, I forgot how bad it tasted." You laughed at him, taking one last drag before stubbing it out on the picnic table. The pair of you sat down across from the old man, who looked more than a little confused.
"Who is-" you started to ask.
"I don't know, he doesn't talk sense. I've been listening to him for twenty minutes now." Michael butted in, and the pair of you fell silent for a while. You played with the cigarette box and lighter in your hands, Michael loosened his tie. You blew a fallen strand of hair away from your nose, Michael took off his blazer and draped it over your shoulders to battle the cold air. "So, word around the office is you kissed Jim." Michael finally spoke up, and you looked to him. He raised his hands in defence. "Hey, manager doesn't get involved with the gossip... But Dwight did tell me, also said something about a secret mission?"
"Managed to convince him that I was a deep cover spy with the CIA... Karen is a Russian agent..." You chuckled to yourself as your spoke.
"Is Jim the conflicted love interest?" Michael pressed, and you sighed.
In truth, you weren't exactly sure how you had been feeling the past few weeks. Since Oscar's welcome back, and that kiss with Jim, you had no clue where you stood with your best friend. You had barely spoken, and despite apologising he was still avoiding you. And even though you knew it was just a drunken mistake, that you didn't feel that way about him... Well, you didn't really know for sure.
He was Jim, the guy with the smile and the pranks and the laugh. He was the shoulder you had cried on, your partner in crime, your confidant. He was your HHD buddy, and your go-to guy for movie night. He was the one who gave your life that little extra colour, who made sure to keep a spare umbrella in his car in case of rain, with his straggly hair that needed a trim and his messy habits that led to you finding his car keys in the fridge one time. He helped you through Brian, through Patrick, through however many more guys and girls who broke your heart.
He was the friend who picked you up one warm Saturday morning at 10 am on the dot, despite his tendency to be late, and drove you to Scranton Cemetery. The guy who bought your mom's favourite flowers to place on her grave after seeing a photo in your apartment. The man who stood beside you and held your hand as you talked to her headstone, recounting stories of your childhood. You remembered he talked to her too, and told your mom what an incredible woman you had become, how proud she would have been to see you all grown up. And then, he drove you around town all day, letting you take him to the different parts of Scranton that reminded you of her. You ended up on your couch that night, an Alfredo's pizza and chinese takeout feast in front of you, while he picked out your favourite movie and let you fall asleep on his shoulder.
Jim was the only person in this world who made you feel like you were unconditionally, wholeheartedly, absolutely loved.
And suddenly, it pieced together in your head.
Pam and Patrick's words on Casino Night, Dwight's analysis, the looks the pair of you had got in the office when he first started. Teasing from Michael and the warehouse crews for years over something you completely denied, because you never believed you would be so cliché as to fall in love with your best friend.
"How long have you known I was in love with Jim?" You asked after minutes of silence, but before Michael could answer, Phyllis and Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, appeared from the reception hall, wedding guests in tow, to embark on their honeymoon. Phyllis stopped by the pair of you, looking between Michael and the old man.
"You found Uncle Al!" She said with a smile, hugging Michael quickly to thank him before Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration, whisked her away.
Amongst the crowd, you spotted Jim and Karen, and it felt like a dull pain that had been in your gut for years just intensified until you felt tears brimming. You rushed inside, aiming to grab your clutch and jacket from your assigned seat and leave, but on the way out you crashed into someone.
Dwight.
"Who did this to you?" He asked, surprising you as tears began to roll down your cheeks. Dwight wasn't the sort to notice tears, rather the mud on your shoes over emotions.
"I-" You tried to speak, but instead you sobbed, and Dwight pulled you into an awkwardly placed hug, letting you cry onto his shoulder. And even though you were 99% sure it was the same suit his grandfather died in, you were grateful for the comforting gesture. You stayed there a moment with him, only moving away once you heard the crowd coming back into the building for a few more hours of an open bar and semi-decent music.
"Do I need to hurt somebody, Agent DeMarco?" Dwight asked in all seriousness, and you let out a little laugh.
"Shit, Dwight..." You wondered if it was wrong to keep up the facade, but the idea made you smile wider. "Nothing to worry about, Agent. I'll see you at work?" Dwight nodded, and you glanced quickly around the room, hoping to see Pam and say goodbye.
Instead, Jim caught your eye. He took one look and his face fell from laughter to concern, and he mouthed a quick 'you ok?' across the room. You bit your lip, taking a few deep breaths before walking out, not wanting to give a reply. Not knowing what to say.
Once you were back in the cool night air, a cigarette between your lips and a shaky hand lighting it, you shrugged off Michael's blazer in place of your own jacket, sitting it on the picnic bench beside your boss, who had remained in the cold despite the party continuing.
"Share a cab?" You asked him, and he nodded, getting up and walking to the main road with you. Words weren't exchanged, two lonesome souls walking the pavement surrounded by an air of, what could only be described as, uncertainty. Michael waved down a cab, the pair of you getting in, and making the short journey home. As you pulled in to your apartment, Michael finally spoke up.
"That first day Jim came in, you two hit it off right away, and I just saw the look in your eye. Everytime he spoke, you were completely focused on him, on his eyes, on his smile. You tried so hard to make a good impression." Michael chuckled softly, and you looked over to him, you hand hesitant on opening the door. "And then he asked you out that day you were complaining about grocery shopping..."
"That wasn't a date." You quickly corrected him, stepping out of the car.
"Of course it was! And for whatever reason, you both decided it wouldn't work... Greatest mystery I've ever been witness to." Michael countered, leaving you speechless as the car drove away. You stood for a few minutes on the sidewalk until you got cold, then headed into your flat.
That night, you didn't sleep. Instead, you went through photo albums, through computer photo folders, through memories, an endless glass of wine by your side, trying to figure out exactly how you looked at Jim... This rumoured look you had for him, one you had never noticed before, was suddenly glaringly obvious. And you compared it too, with other photos you had with friends, with ex partners. You never looked at anyone like you looked at Jim.
And as it rolled on 5 am rolled in, the sun slowly rising outside, casting light into your bedroom window, and you were beyond drunk on the amount of alcohol consumed, you decided it was time to come to terms with the truth:
Love fucking sucks, and you were in love with Jim Halpert.
Oscar Diaz- Don’t Think, Just Feel
*Short & quick smut*
Leave a request!
~
“How’s your neck?” You ask softly as you kneel down in front of Oscar who sat on the couch, a bottle of brown liquor in his hand.
“It’s nothing I can’t handle. Don’t worry about me nena.” Oscar says, taking a swing of the strong smelling liquor.
“You can’t tell me not to worry. I’m going to worry when it comes to you.” You sigh, your eyes looking at every single one of his injuries,”I don’t like seeing you like this.”
“Look at me, it’s just a few scratches mami. The alcohol is helping take my mind off of it, so it feels like a paper cut. I promise.” Oscar lies with ease,”Now just come up here with me so we can kick it.” He says with a forced smile.
You know him to well to actually fall for his words, you can tell it hurts worse than he’s letting on, so you do the only thing you know that will actually help,”Then let me take your mind completely off of it so you won’t feel anything.” You say looking up to him with innocent eyes, gathering your hair up into a pony tail with the scrunchie that sat on your wrist.
Oscar doesn’t say anything and licks his lower lips, already knowing what you were getting at. You don’t waste time as you quickly pop open the button on his black cargo shorts and unzip them. You reach into his boxers and pull him free, sitting up higher on your knees,”Just relax papi, I’m going to do all the work.” You inform him, your small hand slowly beginning to stoke him. Oscar watching your every move like a predator waiting to pounce on its prey,”Just focus on how I’m making you feel.” You say, licking up his shaft, your tongue flat against him, doing it a few more times before holding him straight up since he was not fully erect. You wrap your lips around his tip, gently sucking.
“Fuck.” Oscar groans, his free hand wrapping around your ponytail. He takes another drink, setting the bottle on the end table when he’s done. You bring your head further down until your nose is pressed against his skin, choking around him and pulling off with a cough. You breath in some air before doing the same action again. This time not feeling the need to pull off and just pushing through it as you gag.
“Take your shirt off, quiero ver todo mami.” (I want to see everything)
You happily oblige and stop what you’re doing to sit back and peel off the tank top you had on, your breast instantly free since you didn’t wear a bra today. You decide to take it one step further and stand up to pull your shorts and lacy underwear of as well, letting them fall to your feet as you step out of them,”You wanna feel?” You ask him with a seductive smirk. Oscar nodding as leans back against the cushion. You take a few steps toward him and carefully position yourself right above his cock, a bit more difficult than normal since you couldn’t exactly grab onto his shoulders,”Here.” You giggle and press your chest to his face, Oscar instantly wrapping his mouth around your right nipple and letting his tongue swirl it. You let out a small moan at this, your hands aching to hold on to him but not being able too. You let him play with your breast for a few moments before reaching underneath your self and guiding him to your opening. You sink down onto him with ease, all of him completely inside of you in a matter of moments.
“That’s it mami.” Oscar moans out, his hands now holding your hips. You grip his forearms, bouncing up and down, your eyes squeezing shut in pleasure.
“Fuck Oscar.” You whine, his fingers digging into your skin as he try’s to thrust from underneath you,”Nuh uh. I’m suppose to be doing all the work.” You pant, Oscar stopping his actions as you move faster. He bites down on his lip, resting his head back on the couch as he enjoys the ride that is you.
It doesn’t take long for the tingling in the pit of your stomach to intensify, your thighs burning by this point,”I’m almost there baby.”
“Keep going. Just a little longer mami.” Oscar replies through gritted teeth. His hands moving down to your ass to knead it roughly.
You hold out for another minute or so, calling out his name as you find your release. Oscar not to far behind and spilling into you. Pretty sure your ass was now going to be bruised with how hard he was gripping it. As he comes to a still you lean forward and give him a messy kiss. You climb off of him, the both of you hissing as his member slides out of you.
“Maybe I’ll get hurt more often.” Oscar jokes as he puts himself away.
“You better not. I’m too out of shape to be on top.” You say as you pull on your shorts, your heart still racing,”So don’t get use to that. You know I only ride on special occasions.” You laugh shakily as you continue to get dressed,”Now let me go make you something to eat. You need to hurry up and get better so your ass can get off of this couch.” You tell him playfully, leaning over to give him another kiss,”I’m making enchiladas so tell Cesar to hurry and get home if he wants to eat with us.”
“Yes mam.” Oscar smirks, watching your backside as you head off into the kitchen. Thankful that he had you to take care of him and love him, knowing that he’d be more lost in his hectic life if he didn’t have you in it.
Twin Snowflakes pt21:Ice Breaker?
[Part 20 here! <-]
Snow, as far as the eye can see. Summer has had enough of snow. A terrible thing considering her move sets and living situation. The frozen rain gently fell down into a meadow of pure white, blanketing any beautiful flowers that could be right below the surface. Her body fell flat, landing stomach down. Cold, but not too cold; the usual case for her mind every time she ended up here. Why was she here? Her heater was definitely on before she laid down. Wool socks kept her toes nice and toasty, and windows were shut tight. She had triple checked. Perhaps this was an actual dream this time instead of an unpleasant visit from the worst guest ever. Summer didn’t want to deal with Shiva. She didn’t want to do anything really. Her body felt...tired. Eyelids were heavy and energy was spent. What was this?
The crunch of snow being crushed broke the silence of the meadow and obstructed Summer’s already limited view. Her head lifted up to see the last person she wanted to. Now she really hoped this wasn’t a dream. It would be dreadful for Shiva to take those away from her too.
The problematic entity laid down on her side. Her hand reached out to brush away a few strands of Summer’s hair to get a better look. “Tired?” Shiva asked, rubbing the girl’s cheek. “I’d be too, faking joy in my life. How long do you think you’ll last? You feel it right, time slipping past you? Days, hours, minutes, seconds; how much more time can you spend failing at everything? Aren’t you tired of it all?”
Summer didn’t respond. Summer couldn’t respond. All she could do was stare into Shiva’s alluring gaze and weep, motionless.
“Awww poor thing.” Shiva rolled Summer over on her back, then straddled her. Her left hand kept rubbing Summer’s pale cheek. Shiva looked down at the girl with a smile that while small, was still oozing with a smug attitude despite her calm voice. “Just close your eyes and surrender to me. What else can you do? You can’t beat me, out think me, or do anything that matters when it counts the most. Do you enjoy it, burdening everyone? How much longer will you hold Nick back?”
Summer’s lip began to quiver. The warmth of her tears was the only source of heat filling her. They began to run faster and faster down the side of her face, only to meet Shiva’s gentle hands rubbing them away. Those same hands drifted lower down and stopped on Summer’s eck. Shiva never squeezed or even entertained. Her demeanor felt almost infant like, the way she tilted her head as she examined everything Summer did. Or...what she didn’t do.
Above, the ice ceiling began melting away again, the meadow fading into dust along the way. Shiva was the last thing Summer saw before everything became an empty space of black. Then, she woke. Dried tear marks were strong on her face and something pinned her right hand from trying to rub them off. Summer looked at her bedside and was taken back by the sight of her brother sleeping with his head laying on the mattress and hand holding her own. “Nick?” Summer said softly, pulling her hand free gently. Nick had always been a light sleeper. Summer had barely done anything and yet Nick woke up.
The boy rubbed the sleep out of his eyes. “Hey sis. Did you sleep okay? You kept crying and trembling.”
“I was?” Summer rubbed her neck and rubbed her tear tracks away. “Sorry. I...guess I had a nightmare.” The sun barely hit her curtains so it must still be pretty early. “Were you here all night? Nick, you’re sick.”
“It’s not like you can catch a cold, miss immunity.”
Summer pouted. “That’s not what I meant and you know it. You’re not gonna get better sleeping on the ground. Worry about yourself first for once?” She said, dry and tired. Summer laid back down and faced away from her brother. She heard him stand up but didn’t hear him walk away. Her mattress sank down seconds later and his hand took hers again.
“Are you...mad at me? You were pretty upset a couple days ago about the Paladin match, and Valerie sure had some choice things to say to me. I know I can be…overbearing at times. I get that you probably want space, but can you at least tell me if there’s anything I did specifically.”
His voice sounded hurt and tired as well. Summer didn’t know Valerie and Nick were on shaking ground. Is that why Nick didn’t tell her he was sick? Summer turned around. “I’m not mad at you. Things have been really low lately is all. I’m sorry if it felt like I’ve directed any of it at you. Things should get better after the tournament. Veronica will probably leave, I’ll have nothing but school lined up, and Oscar will hopefully be back by then. Not the biggest fan of virtual sessions.”
“Yeah, I can see that. Listen if you want more free time then I won’t make you-”
“Performing at the tournament is just fine.” Summer smiled. “Like I would miss a chance to stun a crowd, all of Remnant in fact. Besides, I made an Acr promise to an orphan, remember? I couldn’t back out if I wanted to.”
“Yeah...that would be pretty bad:” Nick cringed at the thought of an entire orphanage being sad and lied to. That’s guilt that would follow someone forever. “Got any plans today? It might do us some good to practice at least once together before the tournament. Not that we really need it.”
“Please, if it isn’t our dual summoning then we’re set. We can’t do that today though. Veronica and I are...umm…” Summer wanted to tell Nick about their argument yesterday which led to Veronica all but forcing her to agree to a fight today and the use of stolen diamond dust, but it wouldn’t make much sense to. Endangering him with her risks was the main reason things escalated. “We’re...going around town and the woods to get things for my outfit.”
“The woods?”
“Yeah she wants to see me fight grimm and we’re gonna look for pure dust and stuff. So don’t worry if you get one of your little twin chills or whatever you call it.”
“I don’t call it anything. Twin chill is nice though. Well be careful. Expect a call if I feel it. Better safe than sorry. It would suck for me to be grabbing school papers while Shiva is rampaging through the woods.” Nick was getting a little stressed thinking about it. One minute he’s stapling papers then sees a massive glacier outside the school window. Not to discredit his sister, but that’s the kind of luck Nick typically had. Things go fine, and then they don’t.
“School papers?” Summer questioned. “Nick it’s not a school day.
“I know. I’m gonna stop by there this afternoon and get the work I missed.” A look of disbelief and judgement shot him right in his heart from Summer. “What!? Just because I’m sick doesn’t mean the homework disappeared. I’m simply going to get it and come back home to rest. Summer’s look did not waver. Nick turned a little red for the nonverbal call out. He stood up. “Leave me alone! I’m going back to bed and then I will do exactly as I said I would do.”
“You’re full of shit…” Summer said while doing a fake cough.
“Night, you little diva.” Nick walked out her room and grabbed the door to shut it.
Summer reached out for a second. “Wait a second.” She said, her voice more reserved. “Nick, y...you love me right? Like, spending time with me?”
Nicholas looked at his sister with a raised brow. “Of course I love you. You’re my baby sister. Not that you being that means I have to hang around you or anything. Why, someone dumb tell you otherwise?”
Summer couldn’t help but smile. “No, hearing you actually say it is just nice. Rest well.” Nick smiled back then closed the door. The smile Summer wore tried its best to stay, but left as quick as it came. Her swarming thoughts made her head feel heavy and cluttered until Summer found herself resting it in her hands as she attempted to rest a little more. Sleep never came back for her unfortunately, no matter how many minutes passed her by.
It felt like no time at all before Summer was out of her bed and getting dressed for the day. She decided to keep her hair down for now and was more concerned about if she was gonna be warm enough. Her standard black thermal leggings and old white over coat should do the trick, but Summer felt compelled to put her ear muffs around her neck and wear warmer socks with her already poofy white winter boots. Snow gloves were put in her coat for safe keeping. Testing diamond dust without Nick was more stressful than she thought it would be. At least the layers of close gave her a good excuse whenever she’d start sweating.
The fated knock on the door finally came and took ten years off of Summer’s life. “Y-Yes?” The door creaked open before being fully swung open with Veronica on the other side. An exceptionally beautiful soft brushed purple winter coat that had a belt around the waist and big black buttons to bundle the whole thing up. Her color of choice was complemented with grayish-white jeans that looked roomie; a weird choice for the girl. Then there were her gym shoes school? Her entire bottom half was casual in contrast from the coat.
Summer got a bit worried. Veronica dresses herself with purpose. Her wardrobe doesn’t sacrifice functionality for flare, yet is stylish nonetheless. This one felt disjointed however. “Ummm what’s with the shoes and jeans? I would’ve thought you’d look a little more...stunning?” Said Summer, choosing her words carefully. She must’ve succeeded because Veronica gave a rude look and nothing else. It was easy to tell that she was still tired from the way she rubbed her eyes. “Didn’t sleep well either?”
“I’m sore and the time difference hasn’t gone away yet. As for my clothes, why would I wear my good clothes when I’m going to the woods and things can get physical? I’d wear a different coat if I had one.” Veronica pulled out a scrunchy and put her lion’s mane of a hair into a ponytail tail.
The sleeves of the coat fell down and Summer became a little more anxious to see Ember Cilca on Veronica’s wrists.“ Oh right, of course she’ll dress comfy in a fight. And use a strong weapon. Why not use her own? Is punching me that exciting?” Her eyes looked down and noticed a small duffel bag outside the door. “What is she gonna do to me!?” Summer ‘casually’ walked over to her sword and put it on her hip. It made her feel a little safer. Then she grabbed a hidden vial of diamond dust. Safety was right back out the window.
“You’re only bringing the one?”
“If this goes terribly then I don’t need Shiva getting a double dose. One is more than enough.” Summer held it out. “Here. It’s probably better you have it for now.”
“On that, we can agree on.” Veronica took the vial and grabbed and used her tail to grab her bag. “Let’s get this over with already…” she stormed off immediately.
Summer thought it best to follow Veronica’s lead. The girl was clearly in a bad mood. “Dying in the woods by a girl crushing on my brother. Yeah, that’s on par with the rest of my life.”
xxxx
With two of noisiest people out of the house, it was pretty easy to tell something was amiss for Weiss. It’s almost eight in the morning and the sound of guitar or vocals hadn’t rattled her morning coffee. Yeah they had a sound room, but that never stopped Summer from playing a rift on the way to it. “It’s quiet, too quiet.” She took a sip from her mug then went to the garden. “Maybe Summer is training? Veronica could probably hear through the sound room.”
The closer Weiss got to the garden, the easier it was to hear that someone actually was there. Yang. She was upside doing push-ups in just a tank top and yellow pajama pants.
“Forty five...forty six...forty seven…forty- oh hey Weiss.”
“Hehehe, how are you not freezing? It’s barely warmed up yet.”
“Since when have I ever been bothered by a little cold air?” Yang let her balance slip to land right side up. “I’m hot every day all day.” She flipped her hair for dramatic effect.”
“Well Mrs. Hot stuff, have you seen Summer? Despite her reluctance to go to school, the girl is an early riser. Especially on the weekends. Is- hey, you got a little…” Weiss pointed on a few bruises on Yang’s right shoulder.
“Oh this? Veronica wanted to spar yesterday. Her mood wasn’t exactly friendly.” Yang sighed. Her body flopped on the soft grass near the tear area. “That girl, it feels like all we do these days is spar rather than trying to talk.”
“Gee, I wonder where she gets that from.” Weiss said with the most sarcastic tone in the world. “I guess I’m in no position to make fun. Summer is hard to communicate with too. Teenagers man.”
“Tell me about it! Were we this bad?”
“Yeah.” Weiss nodded, remembering everything and cringing. “Yeah… gods, we were a lot to deal with.”
“You maybe. I was pretty-”
“Hard headed and passionate? Uncompromising on everything? Loud as hell?”
Yang sat up. “Okay already! Point taken hehe. Oh if you’re looking for Summer, she’s out in town with Veronica.”
That wasn’t an answer Weiss thought she’d hear. “For what? Those two can’t breathe in front of each other without wanting to fight.”
“Well they don’t have a choice if Veronica wants to make a perfect outfit for her. Walking, running, sitting, posture, Veronica likes seeing all of that in order to make a quality design. Kid has a real gift.” Yang crossed her arms. “Too bad people don’t give her the time of day.”
“Oh. So the situation hasn’t gotten any better for her?” Weiss asked.
Yang shrugged. She began pacing around in circles. “Besides what happened here, there hasn’t been a school fight in a while or calls home. Grades are average but that’s to be expected. No drugs either, thankfully. Pretty sure that was a one off thing. Still, Veronica is clearly unhappy and not even Blake gets much out of here these days. We’d take her therapy but she’ll run off or flat out won’t go.” Yang let out another huge sigh, slouching over. “I’m worried. I just want her talking to somebody that will listen and care.
Weiss could relate to that. “Well, at least Nick chips away at that armor of hers.”
“True. That boy is magic. I don’t wanna have him doing it all by himself though. I’m positive he has his fair share of problems too. How is he?”
“All work and no play recently. You saw how sick he was yesterday right? If I could just take a little bit of his drive and replace it with Summer’s reasoning….”
“Ruuuuude! I’m reasonable!” Shouted the boy from the balcony. “Some would say I’m actually quite flexible.
Weiss scoffed, rolling her eyes playfully. “Those people don’t live with you! How are you feeling? Still have a fever?”
“A little one, but I think I’m alright. Well enough to go get my assignments from school? Please?” He said, giving puppy eyes that made Yang laugh and Weiss facepalm.
“Hahaha. Nick, I wish my horses worked half as hard as you do, but I think you might be giving your mother gray hair.”
“Oh he knows! I tell him all the time that one day he’ll notice my hair is gonna go from white, to silver over night because of him and his sister.”
He smiled. “And you’ll look just as beautiful.”
“Nice try, Jaune jr. Fine, you can get your work. However, you’re not walking. I’ll drive you there later and just like with training I’m gonna time you. I swear I don’t know where you get this drive from. Even I know when to take a break.”
“Not at his age.” Yang shot back. “Jaune and Ruby mellowed you out. Nick, your mother didn’t know what to do with herself sometimes. Especially when nobody was around. I’ve walked in on her reading a cookbook, in Menageran! I live there now and I barely know one dialect!”
“Blake didn’t teach them all?
“No point. There’s tons of different languages. Just ask Veronica. She knows two fluently and will gladly show it off. Did you by any chance hear the part of the conversation where your mother and I talked about her? If so, can you not mention it?”
“No worries, didn’t hear anything besides you wanting her to open up more. I don’t think you gotta worry about that too much.” Nick spoke with confidence, hitting his chest. “Veronica might not know it yet but I’m positive Eliza enjoys her company; and I’m trying my best to get Veronica to talk to Summer semi-friendly.”
Weiss was skeptical. “You’ve tried that before. Got a master plan you haven’t shared?”
He shook his head proudly. “Not at all! Hahaha!” Nick looked to the sky. Gentle snowflake flowed through a slow air current like a frozen river. “All I have is hope.”
xxxx
“This is utterly hopeless.” Was the only thing Veronica can say in despair as dozens of people stood in multiple lines to board airships. “Why is everyone up so early!? It’s been half an hour and we haven’t budged. The week day isn’t like this.”
“Of course it isn’t. People work.” Summer looked around to see familiar citizens going on and off ships with luggage; as well as complete strangers who haven’t adjusted to the cold of Atlas. “Many important people have already started showing up in advance for the tournament. They may not help like you will but coming so soon is a great excuse to explore the kingdom and gain influence. They might even drop by the schools and try recruiting if they can get away with it. Almanac is a place where-”
“I know, I know. It’s where society collides. It’s built down on Mantle as a way to expose youths like yourself to how the less fortunate live and inspire you to make the city better. Conversely, all the trips and equipment allows the kids in Mantle to have quality equipment and see Atlas up close; giving them a goal to work towards.”
“It also exposes the older people here to the citizens of Mantle. Creating situations where interactions between the two isn’t rare changes some people’s perspective, or at least makes them think twice about deciding on some affirmative action that hurts the people below. It’s a little harder to disregard the common man whenever their kids are friends with them and you know some.”
“Not really. They think twice because it isn’t smart to angry people who can get to your front door with ease.”
Summer felt her entire vibe get a little bleeker. “Way to make it pessimistic.”
“Hard not to be with a line like this!” Veronica shouted too loudly, drawing a few eyes their way. Not that she cared. “Ugh, isn’t there another means of getting down? Can’t you flex your last name and skip?”
“Weren’t you listening? A lot of high profile people are here. If I throw titles around then so will they. Then you have a bunch of rich people being snobby and being put into a bad light. That includes your family.” Summer witnessed Veronica’s agitated state get a little more restless. It was very strange. This wasn’t the “people agitate me” kind of mood Veronica showed off. No, she seemed torn up. Against her better judgment, Summer took the girl's hand in concern. “Hey are okay? You’re acting weird.”
Veronica looked at the girl's big blue eyes. It was scary how pretty those eyes were. Arc blue had its own appeal that was different then Nick’s chilling Schnee eyes. Veronica looked at her hand and pulled it away. “I’m just a little hungry and you know, lady stuff.” She lied about the second part. “Also don’t touch me without asking. You know I don’t let anybody touch me without asking.”
“Yeah between that and your semblance I can’t imagine you being much of a hugger.” Summer laughed nervously, wondering why she said that of all things. This line has single handedly forced the longest interactions they’ve had without a fight in an extremely long time. Summer was waiting for Veronica to decide on fighting here instead. They were running out of banter! “So umm...wanna eat and pray the line gets shorter when we get back?”
“Will it?” Veronica deadpanned. The lack of eye contact told her all she needed to know. This line was only gonna get worse. “Ugh. Fuck it, new plan. I’m not waiting any longer to get a ride.”
“I told you, using your title is a bad idea.”
“I’m not going to, genius. Follow me.” Veronica ditched the line and started heading back more towards the outer rim of Atlas, right where buildings and watch posts were stationed. “Let’s play a game.”
“That’s never a good sentence.” Summer instinctively moved a little slower. She was not about to get sucker punched. “What kind of game?” She was already regretting asking. It was gonna be crazy.
Veronica finally stopped moving and turned around. “A race to Mantle. The fun way.” She pointed to the edge.
Summer looked out and saw the chains extend down. One of them had a good enough angle to point them in the direction where the woods are. Right at the edge of the old slums in fact. “You’re nuts…”
“Don’t play that card!” Veronica pointed at her. “I know all about you snowboarding on these things!”
Boom! Caught red handed. No way Summer could deny that. “I promised Winter I wouldn’t needlessly endanger myself.” That was a solid excuse.
“Aren’t we literally going to the woods to mess with dangerous dust you stole?” And that was a solid answer. “You’re not gonna talk me out of this. I debate and public speak on national levels. You have a school club.”
“I’m not even in the debate club.”
“Exactly. Now stop arguing. We’re wasting time.”
As usual, Summer could only fall into whatever crazy thing would happen next. But she wasn’t giving up that easily. Veronica wouldn’t dare be too rude in public. “What’s stopping me from walking away right now? I could get on an airship and make it to the forest before you get down the chains.”
An amused chuckle came from Veronica. “Hehehe, it’s funny how wrong you are sometimes. I said race to Mantle, and I never said I was gonna use the chains.” Before Summer had a chance to even think about what she just said, Veronica fell through the ground.
It was so sudden that Summer was thankful she didn’t blink. “Veronica!?” She gasped. Now there wasn't a choice at all! “That’s so...I can’t believe..aaah! Why is she like this!?” Summer shouted to nobody. Her feet raced to the edge, then jumped. The rush of cold early morning air was more than enough for her to create a snowboard of ice that planted her right on the chains. “Can’t things be normal for once?” A path of glyphs shot down the chain. The use of her semblance with the little control over diamond dust she had made for a potent combination. Summer was blazing down the chain! The links between each one were terrifying though. A late hop could shatter the board and send her flying. “Don’t fuck up don’t fuck up don’t fuck up don’t fuck up, and juuuump!” Little hops was all it took for her to soar down wards for seconds before landing. “Doing a trick or two would be pretty amazing if this wasn’t so dangerous and a race.” Summer looked around the air. “Where is she anyways?” Her gaze finally spotted the girl. Veronica was actually beneath her. The girl’s back faced the ground while her hands rested in her pockets, eyes closed blissfully. “Veronica?” Summer said. She got noanswer. Veronica continued to fall effortlessly. As if she was unconscious. Summer shouted again. “Veronica! You alright over there?” Still no answer. Now Summer was worried. “HEY!? VEE VEE!”
Not even her despised nickname gave Veronica a reaction. Summer could feel her heart start to race. “She can’t actually be unconscious right!?” Reasoning with herself wasn’t working. If by some chance Veronica was knocked out...Summer didn’t want to think about it. There was no time to think. Without another second to waste, Summer jumped off the chain and began falling towards her long term acquaintance. She brandished Myrtenaster and angled three glyphs to bounce off of to reach Veronica. Summer extended her hand in fear of the girl’s safety. “Veronica!!!!”
“Huh?” Veronica opened her eyes to see a blur of white and blue hurling towards her. “What in the-” She wasn’t the only one surprised. Summer’s eyes bugged out. The girl was completely caught off guard, crashing into Veronica and sending them spiraling through the air. Fortunately, Veronica was quick to grab Summer by the sleeve and pull her into a tight embrace for the girl’s own safety. “Summer!? What the hell!? Why did you jump!?”
“Why were your eyes closed!?!?! I thought you had passed out or something. I was screaming your name!!” Summer yelled with tears in her eyes from the fear.
“Summer I can’t hear shit when wind is roaring through my ears! I was relaxing!”
“RELAXING!? YOU ARE FREE FALLING!!!!” Summer screamed. No doubt Veronica heard that.
“IT IS A LONG FALL, SUMMER! IT IS LITERAL HANG TIME!” Veronica yelled back. She finally noticed the tears coming from Summer. At first she thought it was because of the wind but they kept coming. “Are you crying right now!?”
“YES, DUMBASS! I THOUGHT YOU WERE FALLING TO YOUR DEATH!!!”
Veronica’s heart felt like it stopped for a moment. She had no response for that. Never in her wildest dreams did she expect Summer, anyone, to freak out over something like that. It was a little haunting. If she didn’t feel like a jerk before, Veronica definitely was feeling that way now, just a little. She looked over her shoulder to see Mantle buildings and ground coming in hot. Her arms fastened tightly around Summer’s upper and lower back. “Wrap your arms and legs around me, tightly!”
Summer did as she was told and felt Veronica’s hand press against the back of her head. What should’ve been several seconds before a splat became extended free falling. Summer went from seeing the sky, buildings, the pavement, and then minerals. Crushed sediments and pavement that were firmly placed within the dirt. Summer was experiencing seeing underground for the first time. “Woah…. you can do this all the time!? You see €€this all the time!? How deep are we?
“You are quite literally being impressed by things you can see with a shovel. Now flex your stomach and try not to get the wind knocked out of you.”
Once again, Summer listened and gave a pat on the back for confirmation. A weird feeling ran over her body. As if going down an elevator, then €€boom! That feeling became ten times worse. It was like a rollercoaster on the highest drop. But instead of going down, their bodies were being forced up. The world of minerals was left behind for streets once again. Their momentum kept going up until they came to a midair stop. Summer instinctively made a platform at their feet before they fell again.
Veronica finally let go and pulled Summer off of her body. “Well that’s one way to stop. I’ll admit, clever thinking.”
“What was your plan?”
“I would five back into the ground and back up. Each time would get less air then the last before eventually I would be like several inches from the ground, or I’d land on a roof on the way down. Simple stuff.” Veronica brushed off her outfit in an attempt to get the wrinkles out. The puffy eyes looked from Summer made her let out an auditable little laugh in disbelief. “Tsk, I cannot believe you actually cried.” She teased.
Summer squinted at Veronica before folding both arms and turning her head away dramatically. “I don’t see what’s so funny. Not in the slightest.”
“That’s because you have no sense of humor.”
“What’s humorous about a death like that? It’s terrible.”
Veronica shrugged casually. “Eh, there’s worse ways to go. But ummm thanks for checking, and stuff…” Veronica jumped off the glyph and onto a roof before Summer got any mushy ideas from a thank you. “The race is null in void. Move your butt. We have ground together since we made an emergency landing.”
“We’re skipping the fact you just showed me a little gratitude?” Summer teased. She couldn’t help it. The glare shot at her for it though reminded Summer that teasing a person she had to fight soon wasn’t a great plan. Unlike Valerie, Summer wasn’t gonna get any buffs or debuffs from it. “Hehehe….I’ll start moving my butt.”
“A wise decision.”
“Alright, we’re here.” Weiss said, parking her car into the mostly empty school parking lot. “Nick, you have fifteen minutes to get what you need. Anymore and I’m coming in to drag you out myself.”
He laughed. “Can you at least send the gigas in? If you’re gonna be extra then go all the way.” He hopped out the car and ran inside.”
“Don’t tempt me!” Weiss shouted. She was not above embarrassing him like that. Not in the slightest.
Nick jogged his way down the halls. Benefit of the weekend, no crowded halls. Just him, the occasional faculty, and the sports team. Basketball, soccer, the usual suspects. However, the sight of favorite blue haired girl in an Atlesian military uniform and the kingdom’s flag had caught his attention. Seeing Eliza with her twin tails undone and in one regular ponytail was always so shocking to him. “Yo, Eliza!” He waved.
She looked at him briefly before doing a double take. “Nick? Aren’t you supposed to be in bed resting?”
If he had a nickel…. Nick walked up to her in disbelief. “Is everyone my mom today?” He joked. “I am fine. Just grabbing my assignments. Anyways, color guard practice today? Cool. Didn’t realize I wasn’t the only one doing double duty for the tournament; though I guess I’m technically doing triple.” The weight of that hit him a little. How’d he manage that!?
“Yeah, just for the opening ceremony. I’m the lead when it comes to the flags so hehe, all eyes on me.” It was hard not to hide her nerves about the whole thing. “In terms of weight, it’s not too different from my spear. The routine is almost solid.”
Nick could tell she said that more for her benefit than his. It was funny. Eliza wasn’t one to waver most of the time. Then again, this was her first time doing this and second time competing in this tournament. “Hey, you survived cameras on you before. You fought me last year without choking.”
“Yeah, and lost miserably.” Eliza would never forget that day. “Thanks for the reminder.” She said sarcastically.
“Shut up, you got third on your first major tournament. You couldn’t ask for a better debut against veterans like myself and Val. Oh, thanks for sticking around Vee by the way.”
“Don’t mention it. I did it more for me than you anyways.”
“Ouch. You’re so cruel to your work husband.”
Eliza’s face turned a little red. She pointed her finger at him and sparked it with magical electricity. “Never say that again.”
“Hahaha! I’m just teasing. I still appreciate the help. Anyways, I gotta go get my stuff and bail before my mom makes due on a not so empty threat. Bye!” He ran off past her towards his classrooms.”
“Council room” Eliza said, making Nick stop halfway down the hall. “All your work...I put it in the council room for you.” Even from a distance she could see Nick’s eyes light up. Did it really not take much to make this boy happy?
“Awww Eliza-” she pointed at him again with Fire this time. Nick thought it best to quit while he was ahead and continued walking. Although, he made a little mental note for later. “Hmmm, I wonder if Eliza would be good at candle training. Fire is fire after all. Magic or dust wise.” Nick continued pondering the idea. Magic has always been cool to Nick. The fact he actually knew a person could do it was especially cool. If he could trade being the heir for being the first person with magic in centuries, he might not think twice about it. Nick couldn’t help but fantasize about a life with lower expectations and no heavy title. “Vee is right. I should really talk to my uncle about this. Well, after the tournament, or maybe do it beforehand then soften the blow by winning gold? That would be good.” He turned a corner, failing to check for on comers. “Look at me, talking as if I don’t have to face-” Nick ran head onto Valerie hard and stumbled back.
His friend dropped a bunch of hockey sticks. Some of which hammering her toes. “Ow!” She screamed, her team hearing from several feet away. “Hey watch where you’re- Nick?”
“Hey Val…” He said nasally. The impact had him rubbing his nose gently as it turned red. “Tackling you must be a nightmare. You're like a wall of tanks.” His strange analogy was ignored entirely. He looked up at Valerie and saw nothing but shock and irritation as she pulled him close, real close.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were sick? I’m the one who told you to get rest? I didn’t know it was bad enough for you to be bed ridden.”
“I uhh well you see…” Focusing was hard enough from the crash. The literal inch between them made Nick feel unprepared. Though her face was upset, he still found beauty in it. Especially with the hint of care he saw her turquoise eyes. “You said you wanted space. So I thought I wouldn’t bother you.” He finally said, hesitantly. Valerie didn’t seem too happy with his response.
“Idiot.” Valerie said, “If it’s about your health then blow up my phone for all care!” She huffed. Valerie’s cheeks turned a little red. “Are we clear?” Nick didn’t respond back. His eyes avoided her gaze and he seemed uncomfortable. “Nick? You alright?”
He looked towards her, a little nervous. “Can I make it up to you? Since you were worried and all?”
“What are you-”
“Not as a date if that’s what you’re afraid of.” Nick reassured, “Clearly I upset you so let me fix it by taking you to your favorite dine in restaurant? These last couple days I…missed you okay?” He could feel his face turning red. Platonic or not, this sounded like a confession. And yet Valerie hadn’t let go of him yet. It might’ve been his imagination, but he could’ve sworn she had gotten redder.
Valerie could feel herself being apart mentally. Nick wasn’t one to lie, but enduring was what he did best. How often did he think about her while he was sick? Did she make his fever worse? Was not telling him more painful for him than it was her? Valerie didn’t know. Making sense of any of it wasn’t important. “Nick I-” her voice was cut off by the murmurs of the halls. Athletes and onlookers passed by with their whispers and giggles. They had once again made a spectacle out of nothing. Another thing for idiots to gossip about and spread their lies. Valerie couldn’t stand it. Her blood began to boil. It never failed. Nick had made life, her life, a little more about him and less about her. Valerie finally let go of him, pushing him away. “No, sorry.” She said, clearly irritated. “I still want my space; and we both know how you are. Date or not, you just can’t help yourself but pull out the red carpet act like if I need you when I don’t. It’s pretty…” Nick didn’t let her finish. He turned his back to her. It was only then Valerie realized just how much she was mouthing off. “Wait that came out wrong.” She double backed, “I…”
“You don’t get to do that.” Nick finally bit back, “Telling me I should’ve called and that you care, only to push me away at your convenience. Now you’re berating me? What is with you lately!?” His voice echoed through the hall. It was only then he paid attention to his peers who quickly moved along the moment he tried meeting their gaze. Suddenly, something clicked. “Are you...embarrassed by me?” He said, mid revelation.
“You’re causing a scene, Nick.” She muffled, unusually reserved. “Listen, I just think the tournament takes priority is all.” Valerie lies, unknowingly letting her pride get the better of her. “I’m not embarrassed by you, honest.”
“So why do you brush me off every time people are around huh? I’m not a mind reader. Just come out with it.” He got no answer. Just silence while Valerie’s eyes looked for people who might still be watching. Now he was really annoyed, and he wasn’t even sure if it was because of Valerie or himself for getting worked up in the first place. “You know what? Forget it. Have it your way. I’m too ill to argue.” He said dismissively. Nick walked away from the argument to get what he came for. He was on a time limit anyway.
Valerie watched her friend turn the corner, hurt by her words. Or maybe the lack of them. Valerie turned around to go back to practice and stopped after only one step, stunned by the sight of her mother carrying extra sports gear.
Nora let out an exhausted sigh then smiled, “Oh boy. Here I thought your biggest worry today would be run down knee pads.” She laughed awkwardly at her own ice breaker. “Wanna talk about it later.”
Valerie got closer. She took the gear from her mother and went towards the gym. “There’s nothing to talk about.”
Nora let Valerie get away. There will be time for questions later. Nora put her hands on her hips and shook her head. “Teenagers.”
Neither twin was having the best mood right now. Summer could feel her heart beating out of her chest the deeper into the woods she went. Ever since the free fall, Veronica had gone silent. Any attempt at conversion was ignored. She just kept walking deeper and deeper until everything started to look the same to Summer. Thankfully no grimm had appeared, but if they kept walking aimlessly like this… “I think this far enough, Veronica.” Summer said. Veronica actually listened and stopped before turning around.
“Yeah, this’ll do nicely.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the diamond dust while dropping her bag. “I say it’s about time we get this over with. Catch.” She tossed the vial of dust, underhanded.
Summer nearly panicked as she caught it midair. “What are you-don’t do that! This stuff is dangerous!” If her nerves weren’t shot before, they were now.
“The dangerous part is yet to come.” Veronica engaged Ember Celica and brought her fists up. She would’ve liked to remove the jacket, but a piece of her mind told her it was far wiser to keep the extra layer of warmth and protection. “Well?”
“Yeah, what are you waiting for?”Said the alluring lethal voice inside of Summer’s head, sending chills up her spine. This wasn’t the cold’s doing. No, this was fear. Pure unkempt adrenaline that made her stomach twisted into knots and body shiver. “She’s asking for it, so let her have it. Better her than fear sweet Nicholas, right?”
Summer couldn’t stop shaking in place. This wasn't the plan. Not like this so much could go wrong. Was she really to fight Shiva again? Did Veronica stand a chance? Just how much stronger would Shiva’s grip be by doing this. If they failed, if she wasn’t strong enough then…that might be it. This wasn’t just her own life at stake either. Summer already thought Veronica might’ve died today. If it was by her own hands…
Bile threatened to come up and out of throat. Summer couldn’t even see straight anymore. The trees spun around her and her balance felt off. The whole world seemed to crush her under her own weight and tears-
“Lesson learned.” Called out Veronica, bringing reality back to Summer. She hadn’t realized it through her panic attack, but Veronica had gotten remarkably close to her, looking right into her soul and placing a hand to rub Summer’s pale cheek. Summer was so overwhelmed she began stammering. “W-What a...are y-you-”
“This terrifying fear that’s crippling you; the absolute anxiety of knowing how potentially dangerous it would be to pull a stunt like this? Maybe remember it the next time you wanna drag Nick into one of your reckless training, kay?” Veronica took the Diamond Dust away from Summer and returned it to her pocket. “Okay, now for the real reason we’re here. We need things for your outfit and so on.”
Summer watched Veronica nonchalantly lift her bag and walk off again. She couldn’t be it. This entire was a set up. A guilt trip into thinking more about Nick’s safety, and it worked. The humiliation of it all. What’s worse was Summer felt...like she deserved it? Did Nick ever feel this, this fear? How many times did she want to train her control and he went along with it? Why did he go along with it!? Her body felt weak, exhausted. Summer stumbled back against a tree, sliding down until she sat in the snow on the verge of breaking down. “Stop.” She said, weak and afraid. “I need a minute, so please stop.”
Veronica looked back to see the state Summer was in. No longer was she fighting back tears. Summer openly wept as she hugged her knees tightly to try and stop the shaking. She wasn’t the only one feeling guilty.
“Damnit Veronica! I didn’t think it would scare her this bad or make her cry!”Veronica walked back to the fragile girl and sat next to her quietly. This was a complete disaster. Emotional vulnerability was never a thing Veronica was good at doing or dealing with. She took a chance and used her tail to wipe Summer’s wet face, gaining her attention. “I ummm, wasn’t trying to...a panic attack was not in my plans. You looked a little frantic at first but then you spiraled in the blink of an eye. I’m…” Veronica looked away, her ears folded in shame. “I fucked up. My bad. Nick told me to take it easy on you and here I am being worse than usual.”
Summer sniffled. She wasn’t exactly sure how to respond to being comforted. Especially by Veronica of all people. Still, it felt nice. Different from others. That’s for sure. “I’m sorry.”
That was out of left field. “What?” Said Veronica, turning back around. “Umm I don’t think you know how apologies work. I mean I barely do, but this isn’t right.”
“I said some things I didn’t mean about you yesterday. I was angry at myself and directed it to you. I may not know what bothers you but I know you probably have shit in your life going on too.”
“Yeah well...we’re famous. Problems come with the territory, and puberty.”
“Eh, can’t relate. High regen and pain tolerance. I don’t get cramps, or get sick. The only upside to getting blasted with dust no scientist can identify.”
“I probably shouldn’t envy you but maaaan, little jealous. Not gonna lie.”
The girls shared a small chuckle for what it was worth. Summer sniffled again and rubbed her eyes. “Ya know, we don’t really...talk, do we? Not since we were five. I’m sure there’s a lot of things we could learn.”
Veronica couldn’t suppress her unwilling groan. Bonding was not on her agenda. However, Veronica couldn’t help but think about Nick’s words and her promise to him. “Let’s make a truce? We have to spend time together. There’s no getting around it.”
“I’m painfully aware…” Summer moaned. “What’s the truce?”
Veronica stood up and reached for Summer’s hand, lifting her up as well. “I will do my damnedest to be less confrontational if you do as well. Also if you are willing to explain this whole Shiva business to me, then… I’ll explain my faunus business. I suppose.” Her tail instinctively wrapped around her waist for security. She could tell by Summer’s expression that she was definitely intrigued. It was warranted. Veronica didn’t speak much about it on purpose. Now she was offering it on a silver platter. “Well?” She said anxiously”
Summer retook Veronica’s hand and shook it. “Alright, truce.”
The sunlight peeked through the white curtains of the window. Your eyes fluttered open softly glancing to the soft orange colors of the sunrise. Waking up in this bliss made you smile. It was like for a short moment you were living in your own fantasy, the one that you weren’t brave enough to say out loud but deep down you always wanted. You admired the view for a little more until the sounds of movement in your small kitchen caught your attention.
Softly shifting your body to the left, you saw the number one reason for all your fantasies these days. You propped your head on top of your hand, having a better look at Oscar and the way he moved his body to the sides and his head bumped softly up and down listening to a rap song that was low enough only for him to listen. He didn’t want to wake you up.
He was shirtless wearing only grey sweatpants that rested right on top of his hips. You could see his lower back dimples and you could picture how his bones formed a V would look from the front.
“Ma’, I can feel your eyes all up my ass,” Oscar’s accent made your skin tingle. He said that without looking back as he kept cutting something on the counter.
You chuckled, “I mean…” your head tilted admiring his attributes, “It is a good ass.”
The muscles of his back flexed as he chuckled. You were attracted to every inch of this body but you had to admit, his back was one of your favorite spots to kiss. Oscar had become a constant visitor almost every night in the past couple months.
As you continued to watch him cook you reminisced of the times he used to say he wanted to be a professional chef. In High School you guys had so much dreams to fulfill. You also thought about all the encounters you had with him over the past months and how many of them ended up with him cooking something, either that be breakfast or sometimes dinner.
You’ve spent most of your late nights and early mornings with Oscar but all of it hiding from everyone, from Santos, from your family and from the neighborhood. When this first happened you told him you wanted to keep it a secret from everyone. If you told everyone you were dating Oscar, it would bring so many questions and you didn’t want to deal with the answers.
Months ago you were mad at him for throwing his brother out of the house. Until he told you the reasons and why Cuchillos the shot caller made him but that didn’t make it right. You wanted him to come to reason and have his brother back but he wouldn’t have it. His loyalty to Cuchillos and the Santos went above everything and everyone, even his own blood and deep down it scared you. Since that argument talking about gang business was banned from conversations, just because every time either one talked about it, it ended up in a fight.
Instead of focusing on his lifestyle and where his loyalties lied, you focused on him and on how he made you feel. Oscar turned his body around, your eyes roaming his naked chest. As your eyes went down, they spotted your kitchen towel hanging from his pant line, just like a professional chef. You chuckled softly looking at the vibrant pink lemons print on the towel.
He glanced down, seeing what you saw and arched an eyebrow, “Muy chistosa.”
“I haven’t said a word…” you sat, his eyes going down to your chest. Following his glance you remembered you were completely naked from the night prior. “Cochino.”
Oscar shrugged proudly, sitting down next to you on the edge of the bed. “Try this,” he had a cracker and some type of food on top of it on his hand and he fed it to you. Without asking you opened and ate it. He watched you close your eyes at the deliciousness of his cooking. “¿Rico?”
Instantly you nodded in complete agreement, “Tuna?”
“Yep,” he sucked his thumb, “plus some spices and shallots”
“It’s good,” you licked your lip, leaning forward. “Gourmet.”
Gently he caressed your chin, leaning in and kissing your lips. There was intimacy in that morning kiss. “Buenos días, preciosa.” His soft morning kiss made you smile.
“Morning,” you placed another quick kiss on his lips before standing up.
He grabbed the cigarette from his earlobe and placed it on his mouth. You smirked grabbing the lighter from your nightstand and flicking it. The flame busted and you lit his cigarette. You watched him inhale from the cigarette as he locked eyes with yours. Oscar let out the cloud of smoke, you took a deep breath in.
“¿Quieres?” He arched his eyebrow taking another drag in.
You waited for him to finish the drag and just when he was going to exhale the smoke, leaning forward inhaling it in. “I gotta hit the shower,” you stood up from the bed.
His eyes were piercing on your ass, teasingly you slapped your gluts walking down. “Are you going to sit there all sonso (dumb) or join me?” you turned to look at him all seductive, “Biatch.”
Oscar flashed a devilish smirk standing up and pulling the bright towel off his sweatpants and getting rid of his clothes as he followed your steps into the shower. He watched you through the shower glass, hot water running through your body. Turning around your eyes met with his lust filled eyes. Smirking, you ran your fingers through your wet hair, watching him get inside. He took a last long drag before throwing the rest of his cigarette in the hand wash.
You chuckled, “You better pick that shit up after we are done.”
The shower was small making your body be close to his. Your body temperature began to get warmer the longer he admired your nakedness. His hand touched your waist, gripping tightly, “You know I love it when you’re so fucking bossy?” Oscar’s voice was deep and seductive.
Wrapping your hands around his neck, you pushed him into a wet and full of passion kiss. He returned the kiss with the same intensity. You took a pause and watched him breathe heavily, “I know.”
/ / /
Walking out of the bathroom with a robe on, you rolled your wet hair into a towel and placed it on top of your head. You reached the kitchen counter and ate another of the gourmet crackers with tuna that Oscar had made.
He walked out with a towel wrapped low around his hips. “Gotchu,” Oscar whispered, hugging you from the back, pressing his body onto you and your body pressed against the counter. You grabbed one of the crackers and fed it to him. “Fuck, I’m good.” He praised himself.
“Show off,” you turned.
Oscar chuckled for a bit as he chewed to his creation. He seemed so happy. There were so many thoughts in the back of your mind as you gazed at him. There was so much history between you and Oscar. So much had happened in the last six years of being apart.
“You good, ma’?” he took a step back but your bodies were still close to each other.
“Mhm,” you nodded brushing the thoughts away.
You were standing between his both strong arms. He clenched his jaw with a small smirk on his lip, “So… Tonight. Got any plans?”
“Aside from doing more of this,” you kissed his lips, “when I come back from the school dance. Nope, nada, mi amor.”
He smirked, leaning for another kiss. “School dance? The Annual Valentine's dance?”
Nodding you grabbed another cracker, “Yep. “ You mumbled as you chewed, “Coach Ronald is making me be his co-chaperone.”
“Wanna ditch it and go to the beach?” He asked.
Your head dropped backwards, “I wish but I am the newbie so I gotta do it. If not those viejitas won’t let me be.”
Oscar clenched his jaw, “Are they giving you a hard time?”
“Not really,” you told him, “they’re just old and bitter.”
He nodded softly, “How about tomorrow? Any plans mama?”
You squinted looking at his face and trying to figure out what he was thinking. “Are you trying to get me on a Valentine’s date?”
Licking his lower lip, he shrugged, “Guilty. Just trying to spend some quality time with my girl. That’s all.”
You couldn’t help but chuckle, wrapping both arms around his neck and kissing his lips. “We can do something tomorrow. Meet and get out of Freeridge for a couple hours.”
“I’ll pick you up here,” he said.
“You know that can’t happen,” you told him, “too many eyes.”
Oscar sighed harshly glancing to the side, “I’m tired of hiding, Y/N.”
His words pierced into you like sharp knives. “I-,” you sighed, looking into his eyes, “we’ve already talked about this, Oscar. My family and your family can’t know we are together and neither is the neighborhood.”
“Are you ashamed of me?” He spat, his eyes starting to get clouded with anger.
“What?” you looked him in the eye, not believing he’s asking you that.
He backed away and stood tall in front of you with both arms crossed onto his chest. “Dime, are you ashamed of me and who I am?”
You took a step forward trying to reach his arm but he backed away. “Oscar I am not ashamed of you. How can you even say that?”
“How can’t I? It’s been months, Y/N and we are still with this hiding shit. I’m tired of it. I want to be with you inside these walls and outside of them. I want you to be with my family, hell - I even want to be with your family but you won’t let me. You don’t let me in.”
“I don’t let you in?” you cocked an eyebrow.
Oscar shook his head, taking a couple steps in forward. “No estoy aquí,” he gently touched your head. “And I don’t know if I’m actually here,” he then touched your heart, “at least not like it was before.”
Oscar’s words left you speechless as he got dressed and walked away. Oscar was hurt, you could see it in the way his eyebrows were furrowed and his body was so tense. You could hear it in his voice.
/ / /
Millions of mixed up feelings also traveled around your mind as well as Oscar words. You cared about him so much and daily he was the only person you could think about but it wasn’t that simple. His life, his gang, everything could change in one snap and you didn’t know if you could deal with all of that. You felt safe with him but you weren’t sure about everything else that came with his life.
“Sis?” Jasmine pulled you away from your thoughts. You were in the school gym watching all the teenagers dancing and having a great time.
“Yeah?” you took a sip of the punch, wishing it was spiked.
Jasmine squinted, noticing there was something wrong with you. “Everything okay?”
“Si,” you took another mouthful, still scanning through the crowd carelessly, “just trying to make sure no one sticks it in tonight.”
“Bullshit,” she spat standing in front of you, “there’s something wrong.”
You glared at her and said with sass, “Jasmine - I am okay, go back to your friends.”
“Is it about Oscar? Are you guys fighting?”
When she mentioned him you stood straight and took a deep breath in. Her eyes were showing you how much she cared and that she wanted to help. “Why should I be fighting with Oscar? Haven’t seen the man in weeks.”
“Now that’s some bullshit,” Jasmine said with cockiness, “I know you guys are boning.”
You cocked an eyebrow trying to fake she was in the wrong. “I’m not with Oscar.”
Jasmine raised her phone showing a picture of you two kissing on your bed. “Like I said, bullshit.” Quickly you tried to grab the phone but she was fast and pulled it backwards. “Let’s try this again, what’s wrong?”
Sighing, you shook your head, “We got into a fight this morning.”
“About?”
“He says I’m not letting him in…” you looked around.
Jasmine shrugged, “I mean - he ain’t wrong.”
You glared at her, “Jasmine you don’t know shit about my situation with Oscar.”
“It's true, I don’t know shit because you won’t tell me shit but what I know is that you two dated in high school. Then you left and broke his poor cholo heart.”
You sucked your teeth glancing away for a second before regaining your focus on Jas.
“You got him sneaking in like a freaking teenager! Always leaving his car at his house and sneaking through the back. It’s been months,” Jasmine told you.
“And here I thought I was fooling you.”
Jasmine smiled proudly, “No. You know who you need to stop trying to fool?”
“Who?” you looked at her eyes.
She caressed your chin, “Yourself. Tell him how you really feel and fuck everyone else.”
“What about his affiliations?” you asked.
“I don’t know much about relationships or Spooky but I know this, he would never put you in danger. He scares the hell out of everyone but that guy? He is a ride or die and he loves you, mana.”
“You’ve been peeping through my window a lot haven’t you?”
She shrugged smiling like the mischief she is, “Got a couple videos if you want them.”
“Walk away,” you pointed to the crowd and she quickly ran to her friends.
As much as you wanted to be in the right about the whole situation your teenage sister was right. Oscar would never put you in danger and he would always protect you. Grabbing your cell phone out of your purse, you found his name in your contact list.
Taking a deep breath you wrote “Perdón por todo lo que dije hoy. Can we please talk?” You contemplated the words on the screen for a moment and felt how your heartbeat rose. Oscar was a man with a strong character and high pride, you honestly did not know if he’d reply or just ignore the text. You wished to God for him to reply, you wanted to see him and tell him how you really felt.
