Tim: But what if i don't want to be the savior of the broken, the beaten and the damned, dad?
Bruce: I have literally never taken you into the city to see a marching band, Tim.

Jason: *Puttin up cookies in a cookie jar* Oh no. *Sarcastically* The last cookie can't fit. *Holdin up the cookie with the spatula* What a tragedy. *Picks it up with their hand* Whatever shall I do? *Eats the cookie*
Alfred: *Watchin him eat the cookie* What a tragedy alright.
Jason: *Singin* Tragedy, don't mean too much to me.

We talk a lot about how much the climate surrounding gender and sexuality has shifted since mcr first came onto the scene, but i think one thing that goes underdiscussed is how drastically different the attitude towards mental health is

just some thoughts about mcr and costumes/characters bc I was talking about how much I love the theatrical aspects of the band a while ago: I still do! I’m someone who was drawn to mcr bc of their glam influences, and the theatricality and visual nature of the band is something I love about them. but what’s really cool about this tour is that gerard can put on a costume and play a character if he wants to, but he doesn’t have to. yes I love that they’re a theatrical creative band but that has always been grounded in the music: the glam rock influences and lyrical storytelling. costumes and visuals are a fun extra that can be a really cool way of self expression (I know gerard has talked about using his onstage persona to express his gender identity) but it’s absolutely not crucial. the band’s happiness is the most important thing and I hope gerard never feels pressured to perform in character if it’s at all forced or restrictive. they have nothing to prove. blood-soaked suit or olive green t-shirt, I’m so just happy to see them onstage and having fun

Our set and lighting designer, AJ, it’s. His! BBirthday Today! And last night, we played the song we’re about to play next for the very first time, and we had never seen the lights for it and,  when they came on I was like WHAT THE FFUCK!! No pressure though! We’re outside, it’s gonna be different, we’re not in an arena. But- but it went off, it was like a party indoors, it was really awesome. But thank you AJ, and happy birthday my friend. Let’s TRY to party. OUT SIDE.

i have a lot of thoughts i'd like to document about mcr's auckland show, but here's just some of the things gerard said that hit me particularly hard.
first off, of course, we have the quote of the whole night, which i'll try not to dwell on too much.
"In the face of extermination, say fuck you."
there have been many posts about this. despite it not being included in the live stream, this video swept the dashboard. there is a pride flag front and centre in the audience. gerard is barely visible but all we needed was his voice. within hours it had inspired countless textposts and art pieces. i know i'm not the only one who cried. it is exactly what i needed to hear during this time of trans rights being rolled back all over the world. then came this video where you can see gerard. they walk right to the front centre stage, legs planted strongly in their skirt and tights, face set with intent, and he spits out those words for the whole world to hear.
now this next one i have not seen any posts about, but it struck a chord with me anyways. before planetary go they speak to the audience:
"You all look wonderful. You do. I see you when the lights are bright on us. I see you. Don't worry, I see you. There's some wonderful costumes. If they're costumes. Are they costumes?" The audience yells back with a resounding "No!" source video
every night my chemical romance performs, they look out to a crowd of visibly queer people staring right back at them. my mcr show was the first time i saw my trans best friend able to walk into the men's bathroom with his head held high. recently there has been a huge onslaught of anti-transgender laws across the world. i'm sure we've all seen posts pointing out that gerard's cheerleader dress they wore in Nashville would now be illegal. the new tennessee bill bans "male or female impersonators who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest." many people have claimed the bill is 'only' about drag performers, as if that would make it okay, but we know that is not true. right-wingers have proven time and time again they view trans women as nothing more than "female impersonators". they treat transgender bodies as nothing but a fetish, or a prurient interest. they argue against gender-affirming medical care on the same phone they use to watch transgender porn. they believe transgender identity and queerness is a costume. it is something we can take on and off. something they can ban and eradicate from their country. but it's not a fucking costume. it's who we are.
which leads me to the encore. this was the only show during their tour with a planned one-song encore (excluding festivals), and that song was their most famous of all time, welcome to the black parade. the band walks back on stage and the only thing gerard says is
"Be who the fuck you are." video
an incredibly important statement that has always been a core part of my chemical romance's message. but with everything that's been going on, with frank saying one of his favourite thing about these tours is "g being able to just be himself", with gerard's gnc outfits making headlines, i feel like that was the perfect sentence to close the show

MCR quotes for anyone who needs them:
"Kids would say they were going to kill themselves then they heard our music... it's our mission"
- Mikey Way.
...
"Reasons why mcr is good for you
juradsleigh:
Feeling like a rad vampire? Listen to bullets
Feeling angry? Listen to 3 cheers
Feeling sad? Listen to black parade
Feeling colourful and happy? Listen to danger days
Feeling like breaking up your band? Listen to death never stop you"
...
"This is for every kid out there... That dyed their hair a fucked up colour and can't get a job. They got a tattoo on their neck like Frank, and can't get a job. That does this because they fuckin' love this. This song is for every kid in the audience- even if you don't have fucked up hair or tattoos-every kid on stage, this song's about us, this song's about you, it's called The Kids From Yesterday."
- Gerard Way.
...
"Stop covering your children's eyes.
Everything is fucked up and pretending it's not won't make it any better. I'm tired of people praying for a change when it's up to them to get off their asses and make a change."
- Frank Iero.
...
"I spent most of my time in the back of the class, just drawing. My goal was to not get noticed in school, because spent so long not being noticed anyway or being treated as if I were invisible that I started to like it.
I've learned that it's actually not very lonely... It's like, you have less friends but the friends you have count more. I met a lot of people that weren't outsiders, or they were very popular, and they have a lot of friends but I don't know if they're the kinds of friends you would call up at 3 am to help you out or talk about being depressed."
- Gerard Way.
...
"Promise me, when MCR's gone, you'll do what it takes to survive. You're strong enough to do it without us."
- Gerard Way.
...
"All your quirks and all your problems, even your depressions, and your failures that's.. that's what makes you, you."
- Gerard Way.
...
"If you or someone you know is severely depressed you need to fucking talk to someone! Your mom, someone in school, I don't give a fuck! Because suicide is fucking bullshit."
- Gerard Way.
...
"Being happy doesn't mean that everything is perfect. It means that you've decided to look beyond the imperfections."
- Gerard Way.
...
"Nothing is worth hurting yourself over, nothing is worth taking your life over"
- Gerard Way.
...
"If we never play another show again, just keep yourself alive."
- Gerard Way.
...
"We're outsiders, we're the kids who didn't get dates for the prom, we're the kids who were confused, who didn't fit in with the cliques, who weren't part of the in-crowd.
Growing up can be a very frightening and confusing time, and I think people look at us and see it's okay to be different. They see that there is a way other than what they're being offered. That you can stand out, that you can be creative, that you can be yourself."
- Gerard Way.
...
"gerard-hey:
I love MCR so much it's like they have a song for every situation. Feeling sad? Listen to The Lights Behind Your Eyes. Feeling frustrated? Listen to I'm Not Okay. Feeling Energetic? Listen to Na Na Na. Feeling like you wanna kick some ass? Listen to Destroya.
Feeling rebellious? Listen to Teenagers. Feel like you wanna break up your band? Listen to Fake Your Death."
...
"The difference we want to make is, number one, to let these kids know that they're not alone, that they're actually not that messed up, and that they can do whatever they want they can express themselves in any way they want without being persecuted or called a faggot or some kind of racist thing. Really just get people to get over their stuff so they can live."
- Gerard Way.
...
"Whatever happens to you, no matter what, l'm always fucking there for you... Don't forget that. I don't give a shit if your boyfriend dumps you. If your girlfriend dumps you. If you're working a shitty job or can't get through school. If you can't get through a fucking Harry Potter book, there's nothing worth dying over. There's nothing worth taking your life over. I will always fucking be there."
- Gerard Way.
...
"If you come to an MCR show, you're probably a little fucked up, and that's okay because we're just as fucked up as you. It's us against the world. And it's great because there's thousands of us in one place."
- Gerard Way.
...
"Someone doesn't like you? Fuck it.
Having a bad day? Fuck it. Didn't get that job, or that grade, or that promotion you wanted? Fuck it. Fighting with your lover? Fuck it. Feel fat today? Fuck it. Losing control of everything and everyone? Fuck it.
What matters now won't matter soon; the truly important thing is that you are alive, and that you have the capacity to do absolutely anything with this beautiful, crazy coincidence of being on this earth. Just stick your middle fingers in the air and think, 'Damn, I have it good."
- Gerard Way.
...
"You're going to come across a lot of shitty bands, and a lot of shitty people. And if anyone of those people call your names because of what you look like, or bedause they don't accept you for who you are. I want you to look right at that mother fucker, stick up your middle finger and scream
"FUCK YOU!!"
- Gerard Way.
...
"Real revenge is making something of yourself."
- Gerard Way.

imagine if you were a mechanic and one day some no-name aristocrat is like "hey... i heard you're like... pretty tight-lipped, right?" and you're like "sure, I need money to pay for my space taxi off of this rock" so you do tune-ups for this aristocrat's kinda mid revolutionary group and you flirt with them a little so they'll ignore the fact you're charging them 300% up the ass until one day a space gas furry shows up at your door and changes your life, worldview, and relationship to politics and maybe you got a romance thing going on but you never clarify it and you wind up in a revolutionary cell with them and who is also here but your mid aristocrat but you're like "hey, just one more step on the road to getting out of here :/" and then the space gas furry buys you a spaceship so you can leave but you kinda wanna see where this space gas furry relationship goes until one day the space gas furry explodes themselves at a funeral to kill a CIA director and then its just you, your other buddies, and your mid aristocrat for five years until the mid aristocrat starts quoting some MCR lyrics at you over the phone while blushing like a closeted fifteen year old and you're like 30 now but it kinda hits anyway and then you decide that because of the space gas furry you're a better person and therefore have to overthrow the government and then the government threatens to blow up the sun and your mid aristocrat accuses you of wanting to blow yourself up to be a martyr and how romantic they thought it would be to live without the threat of an explosion tearing you apart and then you get onto a little bullet spaceship and one of several thousand space gods asks you straight up what you feel the most guilty about and you say "can't worry about that now, I have to stop this explosion" like you couldn't stop that explosion then so that maybe you can go back to that mid aristocrat and your name is Kalvin Brnine and you're canonically the most awkward person alive

Live Design: What was your inspiration for the look of this tour?
AJ Pen [MCR return tour lighting and set designer]: The look of the tour was inspired directly by the artist… twice! My Chemical Romance’s management sent me an image—a tableau from a dance piece in some small black box theatre—and I created a brief animation of a set piece with some lighting looks inspired by this image. We scheduled a meeting with Gerard Way, the band's singer and author of the Dark Horse Comics “Umbrella Academy” series. Gerard immediately saw potential in the kernel of the design and together we fleshed out a scene that depicted souls on earth climbing up to an angel that would hang above and behind the band. Just as TAIT began to engineer the touring set pieces, we received word that there would be a new design direction and we needed to get cracking on something more… dystopian.
