Futari wa Precure: Overview
What follows is my incomplete draft of the overview of FWPC that I attempted in summer of 2018 after finishing the first series. I eventually gave up on writing this in favor of continuing Max Heart and Splash Star, and when it came time to assess all of them collectively I decided to start from scratch, although you will find similar patterns of thought in both, because what I wanted to say didn’t really change. It ends abruptly when I couldn’t figure out where to go with it and didn’t want to revise what I already had, because it was consuming a lot of my time (sound familiar?). I have been sitting on this for over a year now, unsure of what to do, but I have finally decided to release it in this state, so you can get a look behind the scenes at my writing process.
Alright, it’s finally time. I’m going to look back over the entire FWPC series that I’ve just finished watching and evaluate it. What worked? What didn’t? What conventions were established that would be reused in future shows? Let’s dig in.
Main Characters
Tumblr media
Nagisa and Honoka are really great characters to follow. Nagisa in particular breaks the protagonist mold a lot. She doesn’t really want to be a superhero, she just wants to go to school and laugh with her friends and play lacrosse and eat She wants an average life, and that’s commendable. However, she never once hesitates to put herself on the front lines when danger rears its head. When it comes to protecting her friends and family, she’s a mama bear. The contrast between her protective and easygoing sides may seem jarring, but I think it helps make her a more admirable, realistic character. Honoka, meanwhile, is not your everygirl protagonist, but represents a common archetype of the smart, bookish girl. She’s not quiet but she’s not outgoing like Nagisa, either. She loves to see people learn new things and readily shares her knowledge and passion on various subjects. What sets her apart from the stereotype is that she can be assertive, especially when she’s upset, and this is demonstrated well during her fight with Nagisa in episode 8, and again after she scolds Kiriya for being rude in episode 18. Superficially, the pair seem like a tomboy and girly-girl duo but to describe them as such does no favors to either of them. Nagisa wants to wear more mature, feminine clothes but finds that they don’t often suit her. Honoka, similarly, is not quaint and demure. She speaks her mind freely and gets caught up in some of Nagisa’s silliness. Both of them are deeply compassionate, with Nagisa being more protective and Honoka more nurturing.
Side Characters
Tumblr media
Two of these girls would graduate to full Cure roles in subsequent seasons
Nagisa takes more of the show's focus and consequently so do her friends. Shiho and Rina appear much more frequently than Yuriko, and even Natsuko and Kyoko start popping up more often in the second half. I'd prefer a bit more balance, there were a bunch of named characters who only got one episode in the spotlight, and some didn't even get that. I'm thinking mainly of the lacrosse team captain Yumiko, who didn’t register with me when she was around and I didn’t even recognize her as the same character when she wasn’t in her lacrosse gear. (a brief aside, having two side characters with such similar names is very confusing). Ironically, despite being the most frequent recurring side characters, I remember the least about Shiho and Rina’s personalities. Shiho is memorable for her speech quirk of saying everything twice, but she and Rina only get one episode of focus and it’s a soft copy of episode 8, the big fight. What we get out of that one is that Shiho is very self-conscious and Rina can be a bit too hard on her teammates without meaning to. It’s something but it doesn’t really come through in most of their appearances before or after that episode. still, they’re fun to have around. Natsuko and Kyoko also always appear as a pair and are good with crafts, which aside from their cosplay episode, comes in handy during the class play and when they’re all making Ms. Yoshimi a quilt. The rest can be summarized quickly:
Kasiwada Mayu: Looks like Nagisa, likes art
Odajima Yuka: Good at everything, worried about her reputation
Taniguchi Seiko: Likes Kiriya, a little shy, can use the library
Morioka Yui: A bit outgoing, likes Fuji-P, can use the library
Fujimura Shougo: Good at soccer, nice
Kimata: Fuji-P’s friend. Open and shut.
Hasekura Kazuki: Overly assertive, womanizing. I think this is the first time I’ve actually used his name
Fairies
Tumblr media
Mepple started out as kind of a jerk, and the whole overly lovey-dovey with Mipple schtick got old really quick. Thankfully, except for Max Heart, I don’t remember any subsequent seasons featuring romance between the mascots (Y5GG opted for Pretty Cure-Mascot relationships instead) so they learned their lesson on that front. Anyway, despite his immaturity, Mepple, like his partner, had a heart in the right place and was willing to put his life on the line occasionally. Sometimes. One time. Anyway, by series’ end I didn’t find him especially annoying, and of course I was sad at the part where he went to sleep for a week forever. (no I am not letting that go) Mipple is the more endearing of the two but aside from occasional good advice to Honoka she

"...in her manga at that time, Natsuko Taniguchi wrote 'Because I can remember what it felt like to appreciate life, I don't want to be a disaster -- for my own sake.' Reading that really shocked me. I-I've never thought anything like that!! I... I don't love myself at all!! Once I started thinking about it, I realized I'd only ever told myself... 'You don't deserve to eat anything. So no eating for you.' or 'I don't want to do anything anymore! I don't want to try.' That was it. Because I couldn't love myself, no matter my thought process, I'd always treat myself and my accomplishments like they were crap. That was why I didn't know what I wanted to do, and why I'd ended up unable to think at all. And then I let go of everything else, like connecting with people through work, making friends, having fun with people [...] I want to love myself. I want to be able to understand my own feelings!! I wanted to understand my real desires, even if I was hiding stuff that was surprising or embarrassing. I wanted to know my true feelings. I should know them.

APRIL 2023 ROUNDUP!!
Hiiiiii, I’m still here just once again don’t have the time keep up with regularly posting here. But I will be readjusting my schedule in not too long so regular uploads will be back. Until then here is a very belated roundup!
After reading Konya Sukiyaki Da Yo and some other recent works I have been very smitten by Natsuko Taniguchi especially her depictions of different types of human connections. Konya Sukiyaki Janai Kedo is a very loose sequel to the above mentioned title and follows a pair of siblings temporarily living together. Both are at completely different stages of life and self-actualization. The older sister followed her highly successful mother’s footsteps and is working for PR for a major company, while her drifting younger brother is picking up and dropping hobbies as he tries to find his life’s calling. With all these expectations or lack thereof put upon them they each have to face an uncertain future, and clean up their pigsty of an apartment.  I’m also back on the Panpanya train. Since Denpa hasn’t licensed anything more and last time they did it took about 3 years for anything to appear I decided to buy their works one by one in Japanese. Starting with Doubutsu-Tachi which collects over a dozen one-shots both short and long. As usual I have a hard time picking a favorite because I found them all to be so solid so overall I can simply say I loved the theme of more animal/creature centric stories.
Back in April I also managed to randomly pick more than one “yuri-ish” (my favorite type of yuri) one shot compilation. To stick to my aim of highlighting scanlated works Kimi no Kureru Mazui Ame by Kaiko Fuyumushi is one I want to talk about. I think yuri is the perfect space to explore toxic, codependent, and confusing teenage connections which Fuyumushi did with every single story. Some supernatural, while some are more unsettling because of how grounded they are. Def one for people looking for less saccharine depictions of the friendships of teenage girls or more vaguely defined “yuri”.
And sorry for leaving the anon who asked hanging, of course I was interested in The Girl Who Can’t Get A Girlfriend by Mieri Hiranishi I just didn’t know when I’d get my hands on it. And I’m sooooo happy I did I love seeing Viz taking the initiative for a creator like this, getting a perspective on dating as a Japanese butch lesbian and stories of major heartbreak of course I’d be interested. There’s much more from April and there will be even more from May that I want to talk about HOPEFULLY I will be on time for that

The Tokyo 2021 Olympics Are in Trouble
The International Olympic Committee and the Japanese government believe that the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo are actually too massive to fail. However, failure is always an option. Covid-19 cases are on the rise in Japan, with fewer than 100 days before the scheduled onset. Anger regarding the Games is also on the rise in Japan, with the hashtag #CancelOlympics circulating on Twitter last week. According to a new survey, more than seven in ten Japanese citizens do not want the Olympics to take place this summer, with 39 percent choosing an immediate suspension and another 33 percent preferring further postponement.
Tumblr media
And certain political leaders seem to be vacillating. Toshihiro Nikai, Secretary-General of the governing Liberal Democratic Party, said on Japanese television, "If it becomes unlikely, it should be called off." What is the point of the Olympics if it is liable for the transmission of diseases?” The Japanese Communist Party's Akira Koike said the Tokyo 2020 Olympics will be "impossible." The need for the Olympics to be canceled is increasing.
Meanwhile, Tokyo Olympic supporters have been behaving like blinkered greyhounds following a mechanical bunny across the racetrack. President of the Tokyo Organizing Committee, Seiko Hashimoto, has insisted that the Games will take place. Hashimoto, who recently took over the job after previous president Yoshiro Mori was fired for overt misogyny, admitted "a lot of issues," but added, "As the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, we are not considering canceling the games." Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has maintained that, considering the increase in Covid-19 cases in Japan, there has been “no shift in the government stance to do anything to ensure a healthy and successful Olympics.” Sugahas repeated the International Olympic Committee's flimsy proclamation that the Tokyo Olympics was "a sign of optimism to the country" and "the illumination at the end of the tunnel."
Tumblr media
Here come the public health experts. Kazuki Shimizu, Devi Sridhar, Kiyosu Taniguchi, and Kenji Shibuya wrote in a scathing essay published in the scholarly journal The BMJ, “Plans to hold the Olympic and Paralympic games this summer must be reconsidered as a matter of urgency.” The entire human population understands the urgency of containing the pandemic and saving lives. Holding Tokyo 2020 for domestic political and economic reasons thus dismissing science and spiritual imperatives is incompatible with Japan's contribution to public health and human security.”
In Japan, fewer than 1% of the populace has been vaccinated, with just 0.4 percent receiving two doses of the vaccine. To make it worse, Japan's populace is generally wary of vaccines. According to a survey published in The Lancet, Japan has one of the lowest levels of vaccine trust in the world: fewer than 10% of those polled firmly accepted that vaccinations are secure.
Meanwhile, in the midst of a spike of cases in Japan, the government is pouring more funds into the Olympics—and the Games' expenses are now four times greater than their initial $7.3 billion estimate (that's almost $30 billion, a remarkable amount by Olympic standards, rivaled only by their Chinese neighbors). The Olympic Minister of Japan has openly recommended that Olympic competitors be checked on a regular basis during the Games. According to Japanese media sources, Olympic organizers have reserved about 300 hotel rooms for Olympians who test positive for coronavirus symptoms, at an expense of millions of dollars. All of this comes after the Japanese government sparked eyebrows by inconveniently suspending the state of emergency order just days before the Olympic Torch Relay began. The government then placed a month-long "quasi-emergency" order on Tokyo earlier this month, even as the torch relay continues to wind its way across the region.
“People in Japan understood that the lifting of the state of emergency came too fast, and the sight of the torch relay has disturbed many,” Satoko Itani, a professor at Kansai University, told The Country. “To add insult to injury, many Japanese medical personnel are also searching for the vaccination. Vaccination of the aged has just just began and is most certainly not be finished until the start of the Olympics. Hospitals in Japan are being overcome by the increasingly growing number of COVID patients.” Itani said, "It is impossible not to recognize that the attempt to contain the Covid-19 virus in Japan has been seriously compromised or sacrificed as a result of the Olympics." People often recognize that while there seem to be an infinite number of services accessible for organizing the Olympics, there are very little available to save people's lives and livelihoods in Japan.”
In certain ways, the Japanese people have come around to the viewpoint of anti-Olympics campaigners in Tokyo and around the world: the Games do not take place. Natsuko Sasaki, who was born and raised in Japan, told us, "It is significant that so many Japanese citizens have heard how the invincible Olympic machine functions." Sasaki, who now resides in France and is a part of the anti-Olympics party NON aux JO 2024 à Paris, added that the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics have not yet appeared on the general public's radar due to the predominance of coronavirus coverage in the French media, but that the current fiasco in Tokyo could change that.
What is clear is that perhaps the most zealous Olympic coverage boosters would hail the 2020 Games as a sign of optimism. Far from it; they have been a shrine of excess and waste in the sense of a pandemic where services are urgently required. If the condition in Tokyo stays the same or worsens, there will be a backlash against these Games, and the revolt will reverberate in Paris and Los Angeles, the locations of the next two Summer Games. Tokyo's determination to hold the Games even though it means exacerbating the pandemic increases the risks sharply for Olympic supporters and protesters alike.
