Day sixteen
There were five quarters Desmond kept in his wallet that he never spent, and no one knew the reason why he kept them. Finally, one day it was Ezio who asked him
"Fortello, what's with the unspent coins in your wallet?"
"Oh these?"
Desmond asked pulling his wallet out to fish out the quarters. He laid them out on the table before him and said
"Your smart Ezio, and good at solving puzzles. Look at them at try to tell me the reason."
His brother-in-law furrowed his brow looking at the five quarters. The first was unremarkable, bearing the year 1987 on the head of the coin. Though the other four caught his attention with the tail. There were two South Dakota coins and two New York coins. One bore the location of a historical event, the British surrender in 1777. The other was the state coin, he'd seen the state coins, Pertiucco collected all one hundred of them, both mints. The second South Dakota coin was Mount Rushmore. Ezio set the two sets together and looked at the 1987 coin again. Then it clicked.
The coins told a story, Desmond's story. He was born in 1987, in South Dakota then he moved to New York. It's why he had these coins in specific. Ezio looked at him and said
"These coins tell your story Desmond."
"Exactly, as well as provide me the way to tell it. As kids we did visit Mount Rushmore and it's how we learned to parkour, and Saratoga National Historical Park is actually in Conner's memories so it has extra meaning to me."
So to explain this story, I have five quarters in my wallet of the same significance. Though 1995, Massachusetts and Michigan. So it would go, Born 1995 in Massachusetts and moved to Michigan. Though I have been to the Pictured Rocks in Munising.

Presidents’ Day
Celebrated each year, on the third Monday in February, Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday to pay tribute to the presidents of the United States, including George Washington, the country’s first president, and Abraham Lincoln, who served during the Civil War. The holiday was originally established to honor Washington, but over time it has come to be a day to recognize all of the nation’s presidents. It is a day when many businesses and government offices are closed and people have the day off from work or school. Some people celebrate Presidents’ Day by participating in parades or other events, while others use it as a time to relax and spend time with family and friends.
History of Presidents’ Day
Presidents’ Day has its roots in the celebration of George Washington’s birthday, which has been observed as a national holiday in the United States since the late 18th century. Washington was born on February 22, 1732, and his birthday was first officially recognized as a national holiday by an act of Congress in 1879. The holiday was originally called “Washington’s Birthday,” and it was observed on February 22 each year.
In the 20th century, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which was designed to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers by moving several holidays to Mondays. As part of this act, the holiday honoring Washington was moved to the third Monday in February and was renamed “Presidents’ Day” to recognize not just Washington, but all of the presidents of the United States. The holiday has been observed on the third Monday in February since 1971.
Presidents’ Day is not only a time to honor US presidents, but also a time to reflect on the important role that they have played in shaping the nation’s history.
How to Celebrate Presidents’ Day
There are many ways to celebrate Presidents’ Day. Some people choose to honor the holiday by taking part in parades or other events that are held in honor of the presidents. Others use the day as an opportunity to learn more about the presidents and their contributions to the country. Here are a few ideas for celebrating Presidents’ Day:
Attend a Parade, or Visit a Presidential Museum or Library
Many cities and towns hold parades on Presidents’ Day to celebrate the presidents of the USA. Look for one in your area and join in the celebration. There are also many museums and libraries dedicated to the presidents of the United States.
Read a Book About a President
There are many books available about US presidents. Consider reading one of these to learn more about a particular president or the history of the presidency:
Washington: A Life by Ron Chernow. This Pulitzer Prize-winning biography provides an honest portrait of George Washington, the man who became the United States’ first president.
Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin. This book chronicles the life and presidency of Abraham Lincoln, focusing on his ability to lead and manage a diverse group of advisors and cabinet members.
John F. Kennedy: A Biography by Michael O’Brien. A comprehensive biography of JFK, examining the life and legacy of the 35th president, from his childhood and education to his assassination in 1963.
The Reagan Diaries edited by Douglas Brinkley. A collection of diary entries written by President Ronald Reagan during his two terms in office, this book provides a unique, behind-the-scenes look at the Reagan presidency.
Barack Obama: The Story by David Maraniss. Offering a detailed and nuanced portrait of Barack Obama, the 44th president of the United States, it covers Obama’s early life, political career, and presidency, and offers insight into the man and his leadership style.
Watch a Movie or Documentary
There are many films and documentaries about US presidents, but here’s a few to get you started:
Lincoln (2012) – A biographical drama that stars Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States. It focuses on Lincoln’s role in the abolition of slavery and the passage of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
Truman (1995) – Starring Gary Sinise as the 33rd president of the United States, Harry S. Truman, the film covers Truman’s life, career, and presidency, including his role in the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan and the Korean War.
JFK (1991) – A biographical drama starring Kevin Costner as President John F. Kennedy, this film examines the events leading up to Kennedy’s assassination and the investigations that followed.
Nixon (1995) – Stars Anthony Hopkins as President Richard Nixon. The film covers Nixon’s political career, the Watergate scandal and his eventual resignation from office.
The President (2019) – A documentary profiling President Barack Obama, covering his life, career, and presidency.
Participate in a Service Project
Presidents’ Day is a good time to think about ways to serve your community. Consider participating in a service project or volunteering your time to help others.

It was a face carved by retreating glaciers millennia ago, a profile in granite that inspired Native American legends, enchanted Daniel Webster and Nathaniel Hawthorne, and symbolized the rugged individualism of a state whose motto is live free or die. South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore was the work of humans. But New Hampshire’s OId Man of the Mountain, it was said, was the work of a higher authority. So when the Great Stone Face came crashing down in the darkness of May 3, 2003, the people of New Hampshire mourned. There was talk of somehow rebuilding it, talk that was soon silenced, for the Old Man of the Mountain could never die. In his physical absence, the Profile became more powerful. He lives on in the state’s license plates, in a mountainside memorial, on coffee mugs, in the imaginations of roadside roamers. He lives on, too, in the sign for the Profile Motel and Cottages in Lincoln, New Hampshire. I photographed this neon gem one misty evening in July 2021, and thought to myself, “Wouldn’t this be a neat thing to post on New Hampshire Day, whenever that happens?” Well, as designated by the folks at National Calendar Day, today, Sept. 7, is that day, and so here we are in New Hampshire, celebrating the state’s emblem since 1945. This motel sign pays homage to what Daniel Webster once called New Hampshire’s greatest sign. He wrote: “Up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men." There is a famous story called “The Devil and Daniel Webster,” but here in Franconia Notch, it was “God and Daniel Webster,” at least as the 19th-century statesman saw it. There are more signs to enjoy, of course. Places I’ve visited in this state include the salvaged sign for Yoken’s in Portsmouth. There’s the Twin Mountain Campground, with a sign that’s simplicity in cursive, or the cute Seven Dwarfs down the road. Proctor’s Lakehouse Cottages has a neon gem near another one, Weir Beach. You can salute the Lord Hampshire in Tilton, and dive into the pool at the Rye Motor Inn. In Belmont, an old Coke slogan welcomes you to the Lakes Region. I see a signpost up ahead, and it points toward New Hampshire. #retrologist (at New Hampshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiOZNJXLoQc/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It's October 27th. 🧸 On this day in 1858, the future 26th President of the United States, Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt, was born in Manhattan, New York City. He was a curious and bright child who was fascinated by zoology and rigorously engaged in a variety of physical activities, including camping and boxing. He excelled academically in school and graduated from Harvard in 1980.
Teddy began his political career by serving in the New York State Assembly from 1882 to 1884. His keen interest in the military led him to join the fight in the Spanish-American War. He became Lieutenant Colonel of the Rough Rider Regiment, and contributed greatly during the Battle of San Juan Hill. Now known as a national war hero, he was elected as Governor of New York in 1898. In March, 1901, Teddy became Vice President of the United States. In September of that year, with the assassination of President McKinley, Teddy became President. At only 43, he was the youngest man to serve in that position. In 1904, he was elected to serve as President once again.
During his presidency, Teddy had numerous achievements and successes. He mediated the Russo-Japanese War, which won him the Nobel Prize. He put the monopolizing power of large corporations and trusts into check, making him known as the "trust-buster." He began construction of the Panama Canal, which was completed five years after he left office. He extended federal protection to natural resources of land and wildlife, added enormous areas of national forests, reserved lands for public use, and promoted extensive irrigation projects in the agricultural sector.
Theodore Roosevelt is remembered today not only as a remarkable politician, but as a militant, a writer, an explorer, and an all-around colorful figure in general. He is celebrated for his accomplishments in installing modern welfare programs, and undertaking environmental conservation measures, as well as his dedication to anti-trust reform. He is also admired for his commitment to active diplomacy and military action. Teddy is included in the famous Mount Rushmore Memorial in South Dakota's Black Hills, along with Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

Fic Master List/Navigation
Hello! Thought I'd finally create a master list because why not?
A dump of all full fics, drabbles and prompts under the cut.
Brettsey
Full fics on ao3
One shots
Slow Show: He thinks he can do this - be a friend, be her friend. It’s what she wants, he keeps reminding himself every time he has the urge to reach out and hold her hand or touch her arm.
Begin Again: She remembers what she told him after the ambo crash - that he was the one who was always there for her. That day, today, the days before and she thinks, the days after too. She doesn’t doubt it. (Slow Show companion piece)
We Opened Our Eyes and It’s Changing The View: Matt is used to letting things go but this one, this thing with Sylvie, he can’t seem to let go and just move on. He honestly doesn’t know if it’s can’t or won’t at this point - maybe it’s a mix of both
Wanting Was Enough, For Me, It Was Enough: What happens if he can’t be a firefighter anymore?  It’s the only thing he knows, the one constant in his life after everything he’s been through
But It’s No Concern When We’re Wounded Together: Sylvie is hanging out at the Patio bar looking around, smiling to herself. Overall it was a good day even if she basically got dumped that morning. Another one bites the dust, she thinks as she exhales heavily
Some Things Just Take Time, How Can You Be Sure If You Won't Try?: Matt’s been thinking about what Grainger told him over and over again. Like a bad song that’s been replaying itself in his head, he can’t erase it.
Take Away My Heartache In The Night Like A Thief: Matt can hear birds chirping in the background as consciousness starts to pull at him. It’s the most restful sleep he’s gotten in the last few months, even the bed feels more comfortable somehow. Was his bed always this cozy?
A Tear That Hangs Inside My Soul Forever: The first time Sylvie sees Matt since he moved to Oregon was at Stella and Kelly’s wedding. They tried to make the long distance thing work for as long as they could but they were both busy.
‘Cause All That You Are Is All That I'll Ever Need: He grins at the memory of them playing Heads Up that night and Sylvie mocking his flawless Australian accent. He spots the posters of national parks she had up on the walls and he knew the hula girl lamp was still on the dresser in her bedroom.
Hope You Know I Don’t Want Nobody Else: The last few months, things have been changing though. Matt suddenly finds himself in a better mood when it comes to observing holidays. He begins to look forward to them and it all started because of Sylvie Brett.
Trust My Love and Hear Me Say: He produces one of those 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzles Sylvie has seen sold in souvenir and hobby shops around town from behind his back.  On the cover of the box is Mount Rushmore.
We Keep This Love In A Photograph: Over the course of their years long relationship, from dating to marriage, Matt was able to take so many photos and capture a lot of fond memories but this one might just be his absolute favorite.
How Much Longer Then? (I'll Show You In): The first time it happened, Sylvie swears it was an accident. (AU)
It’s On The Edge of What We’re Grateful For: Thirty minutes later, she had a mild buzz and laughed loudly at a joke Matt made that she thought would not have been otherwise funny had they been sober. (AU)
And That's How It Works, That’s How You Get The Girl: Oh. It dawns on her that Matt may have a small crush on the PIC. (AU)
🎄Holiday one shots🎄
I'll Be Home For Christmas: Matt had a week of furlough approved and the Darden boys were spending the holidays with their aunt. It was the perfect plan. That is, until a huge snowstorm hit Chicago two days ago and refused to leave, cancelling all flights indefinitely
On The Twelfth Day of Christmas My True Love Sent to Me: On the first day of Christmas, Matt walks into his quarters to find a can of pears in syrup, a green bow slapped on top. He looks at it in confusion until he remembers that it’s part of the gift exchange - right, a partridge in a pear tree.
I Want Your Midnights (But I'll Be Cleaning Up Bottles With You on New Year's Day): She really didn’t want to have to play nice so she did the only thing she could think of. She tapped this guy next to her on the shoulder.
Multi chapter AUs
I’ll Keep An Eye On You, If You Keep One On Me: She looks around the kitchen. The two years of her life seem fit into only four boxes plus a carry on suitcase. How sad is that?
To That Brighter Day Where It All Begins: They’ve been growing closer over the past year but the timing had never been quite right.
But I Know The Heart Of Life is Good: He’s about to make the joke when all of a sudden, they hear the baby’s first cry and he breaks out into wide grin, gazing at Sylvie who only has eyes for the tiny human being in front of her.
Ours Are the Moments I Play in The Dark (Come Home To My Heart): It’s been almost four and a half years since Matt left for Oregon and a month since he’s been back bringing a little girl with him, who he introduced as his daughter, on his first day back on shift.
Love Turns The Whole Thing Around: A series of non-linear one shots set in the 'But I Know The Heart of Good' Universe that follow Matt, Sylvie and Elijah as they continue to grow together as a family.
Even Boulders Turn Into Sand: Sylvie’s been feeling out of sorts. It started about two weeks ago. She would feel constantly tired and sleepy even if she drank copious amounts of coffee.

HE DIED BROKE
HE DIED BROKE - https://keywestlou.com/he-died-broke/Several years ago, I visited Washington, DC as a tourist. Previously, only as a lawyer who never had the time to visit our national monuments. I was especially interested in the Lincoln Memorial. Lincoln majestically seated. It was the Jefferson Memorial that affected me the most, however. A bronze Thomas Jefferson standing 19 feet tall. Atop a large granite block. Impressive! Overwhelming! Jefferson's public career was outstanding. Few political leaders have achieved the successes he did. Abraham Lincoln referred to Jefferson as ".....the most distinguished politician in our history." Some of Jefferson's accomplishments included being a Founding Father of our Nation, the author of the Declaration of Independence, President of the United States, Vice President before, a spokesperson for democracy, a member of the Continental Congress, Governor of Virginia, Minister to France, first Secretary of State, the Louisiana purchase, opposition to slavery (though he owned over 200 slaves), signed the law banning the importation of slaves to the United States, founded the University of Virginia, spoke five languages, designed the mansion at his 5,000 acre plantation Monticello, and authorized the funding and construction of West Point. A special person. A special President. His image sits on Mount Rushmore. Unfortunately, Jefferson died broke. Not a penny available for his family. His beloved Monticello sold to pay debts. Jefferson was born to wealth. His was a wealthy slave owning family. Wealth back then could be measured by the number of slaves one owned. Slaves were property and had a value. Jefferson had everything going for him from an economic perspective. His problem was he could not manage money. There was not a time when he did not have cash flow problems. He had difficulty balancing his check book. He always spent more than he took in. At the time of his death, Jefferson owed more than $1 million in today's money. His final days before his death were not spent in fond remembrances of the past. He was sickly and bed ridden. He spent most of his waking hours going over his finances and debts. In the end, there was no estate to pass on to heirs. His estate, possessions and slaves were sold at public auctions. His daughter was forced to sell Monticello. His final services did not befit a man of his stature. By choice. Jefferson had directed that no one be invited. His wishes were honored. The services were simple and quiet. His remains were carried by servants, family and friends to his Monticello grave site. Jefferson was distrustful of banks his entire life. Living on the edge of economic disaster, he developed what can only be described as a hatred for banks. He viewed banks in a fashion similar to how they are looked upon today. Regarding banks, Jefferson wrote the following. His prophecy relatively correct: "If the American people ever allow banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around them will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless.....I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies." Jefferson's was a sad ending to a brilliant career. Though of his own making, he was poorly treated in his later years. The Upper Keys have installed AED's. Emergency cardiac arrest boxes. Key West should do so. I have a heart condition. I put my money where my mouth is. I wear a Medical Alert System. Hangs around my neck. I press a button and within minutes the world is around me to help. Ambulance, emergency assistance, fire engine and police. The System costs $54.95 a month. Only needed it once in the 3 years I have had it. Fell down the stairs, fractured 2 vertebras. Couldn't get up. Two in the morning. Glad I had it! I can afford it. Not everyone can. Everyone should have some sort of protection. The AED boxes are a partial assistance to the second biggest killer in the U.S. Heart attacks. Key West pisses a lot of money away. AED is not a waste of tax dollars. It is a protection available all. The Front page of today's KeysNews carries an excellent article concerning the AED's. The La Concha Hotel is almost 100 years old. Opened to the public this date in 1925. The formal grand opening took place January 22, 1926. What follows are excerpts from page 2 of the Executive Summary to the January 6 Committee Report. The page overall testimony by certain insurrectionists. These persons openly acknowledging they had betrayed their country. Remier: "And I'm sorry to the people of this country for threatening the democracy that makes this country so great." Pert: "I know the peaceful transition of power is to ensure the common good for our nation and that it is critical in protecting our country's security needs." Markofski: "My actions put me on the other side of the line from my brothers in the Army. The wrong side. Had I lived in the area, I would have been called upon to defend the Capitol and restore order.....My actions brough dishonor to my beloved U.S. Army National Guard." Witcher: "Every member - every male member of my family has served in the military, in the Marine Corps, and most have saw combat. And I cast a shadow and cast embarrassment upon my family name and that legacy." Today a big one for Syracuse. We play in a bowl game for the first time in years. Against Minnesota in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Two pm. Busy day for me. A haircut with Lori. Then rush home to catch the game. Enjoy your day!
