Researchers say newly discovered archival records reveal an important connection between Ontario First Nations and Irish famine victims.
The Irish Potato Famine was a period of starvation and disease in Ireland, and one of the most traumatic events in modern Irish history. Year after year, the country's potato crop failed. By the time the worst was over, one million people had died of disease and starvation. Survivors were forced to emigrate. In the summer of 1847, Toronto gave refuge to 38,000 Irish famine victims — at a time when Toronto's population was only 20,000.
The part of this history that is virtually unknown is the contribution to the relief fund from Indigenous communities in Canada.
"At least 15 bands answered the call and requested that donations be deducted from their government annuities, added to the fund, and then sent to 'our suffering fellow subjects and Christian brethren in Ireland and Scotland,'' according to Mark McGowan's research. McGowan is a professor of history at the University of Toronto and has spent time going through the archival documents. [...]

Hazel McCallion
youtube
Hazel McCallion was born in 1921 in Port Daniel, Quebec. In 1978, McCallion was elected mayor of Mississauga. She served 12 consecutive terms, holding the position for 36 years and becoming the longest-serving mayor in the history of the city. McCallion became known as "Hurricane Hazel" for her strength and fearlessness. Early on in her tenure, she oversaw the safe evacuation of 250,000 people in response to a train derailment that leaked deadly chlorine gas. This was just one of her many achievements in office. During McCallion's time as mayor, the population of Mississauga nearly tripled and the city stayed out of debt for 33 years. She stepped down in 2014 at the age of 93.
Hazel McCallion died in 2023 at the age of 101.

I would like to share one of my short stories, "The Jar of A Legend", and its protagonist, Sántha Negrescu, in the following post here:
To keep it brief, here's an information about Sántha:
Born on November 11, 1954 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Sántha is the third generation of Romanian-Canadian Moroi vampire born to the Negrescu family.
He is considerably skinny and pale, with his waist size around 23-26 inches. He is 5’7″ (170 cm) and has a pair of pure blue eyes. He has a dark brown hair, thin lips with a pair of fangs appeared between them. His most distinct feature would be his striking eyebrows that give the impression of a fierce, young vampire master.
He’s quite agile, able to climb walls and rocky surfaces, and has a nocturnal vision. He can shapeshifts into animals like a bat or a wolf and has a pair of strong, sharp fangs.
Upon first meeting, Sántha appears awkward and stiff. He tends to be an introvert, often hides himself from the world, but is quite talkative around his family and closed friends. However, he’s quite observant of the world around him, a deep thinker who is inquisitive and always wonders about how the environment around him works. He can be uplifting, especially to his mother and grandparents. He’s self-governed, self-reliant and, although he has no ties to any allegiance, he loves his family.
He’s interested in true crime, video games (arcade being his favourite place), the colour black and red, and books with purple/archaic phrases.

Hundreds of people gathered in Mississauga, Ont., on Saturday in support of Palestinians, as the Israeli military prepares to launch a co-ordinated offensive in Gaza using air, ground and naval forces in response to a deadly attack by Hamas militants a week ago. [...]
Nehad Abu Helal, who grew up in the occupied West Bank, said he knows what it's like to live in the presence of the Israeli military.
"Life is miserable. I cannot describe it. I lived it, I seen it myself," Abu Helal said. "I'm against killing civilian people from either side.... But I'm against occupation. I want this occupation to end."
The rally was one of many taking place across North America and around the world this weekend in support of Palestinian people. Canada also saw a wave of pro-Palestinian protests after Israel formally declared war last Sunday following Hamas's surprise attack in Israel.
Saturday's protest took place as Palestinians struggled to flee from areas of Gaza targeted by Israeli airstrikes, while grappling with a growing shortage of food, water and medical supplies ahead of an expected ground offensive. [...]
