A real #frontendfriday rarity today - a Mercedes 220SE Cabriolet. The “Ponton” range, named for its “pontoon” style envelope body, was M-B’s mainstay in the 1950s and more than 440,000 were made - but just 3,290 of them were Cabrios (2,178 220S and 1,112 220SE). The Coupe and Cabriolet were the last additions to the Ponton line, which dated back to 1953, and easily the most luxuriant, even compared with the 220S/SE Sedans. They appeared in the late summer and fall of 1956 and continued a long tradition of very exclusive coupe/cabrio range toppers, taking over from the short-lived (and even rarer) W187 220 coupe and cabriolet - designs with prewar origins. The Pontons were a huge leap forward for the “volume” Mercedes, as with the W187 they gradually replaced the prewar designs that had been pressed back into service in the 1940s. Mercedes started with the low end of the range and gradually integrated the Ponton’s advanced technology into bigger and pricier models, allowing for lower production costs. Designed under Karl Wilfert and Fritz Nallinger and utilizing some of Béla Barényi’s radical safety ideas, the Pontons looked traditional but modern at the same time. They were cleverly conservative in disguising the fact that they were M-B’s first unibodies, designed with Barényi’s crumple zones. The first was the 4-cyl 180 (W120), followed in early 1954 by the 220a (W180) six. The W180 was essentially a stretched W120 with an upgraded interior and the 80hp M180 six, a tough and smooth OHC six in the finest Benz tradition (Unimogs used it for decades), power upgrades turned it into the 220S in 1956. The Coupe and Cabrio followed soon after, riding a 5” (13cm) shorter wheelbase. They were built at Sindelfingen instead of Stuttgart, and with considerable hand labor. Their interiors were wrapped in leather, wood, and carpet, and the cabriolet had beefy structural reinforcements under the floor. The addition of Bosch mechanical FI brought a new W designation (W128) and 20% more power, but the cars remained mostly the same into 1959. To tell the glorious story of the MERCEDES-BENZ brand, it is first necessary to understand who the men were responsible for its emergence. KARL (CARL) FRIEDRICH MICHAEL BENZ - Born on November 25, 1844, he is considered the creator of the first internal combustion vehicle in the city of Mannheim in Germany, where he held a small workshop. GOTTLIEB WILHELM DAIMLER - Born on March 17, 1834, he graduated as an engineer at the age of 25 at the Stuttgart Polytechnic.
