This is what Kevin said about how he came up with the idea to use Gone With The Wind in TVD:
All I remember is when we were in Atlanta, I was running by the Margaret Mitchell House one morning and I went into the museum. They had chronicled on the wall how Margaret Mitchell wrote the story of Scarlett O’Hara. It was all about Scarlett being a survivor and it was all about how Gone with the Wind was truly about the north and the south and how they blended together post-war, how they recovered, the reconstruction of the south, and commerce over tradition. And ultimately Scarlett fell somewhere in the middle.
She was rooted in her legacy and her history, but she was also a survivor and an opportunist, so she was a blend. You could see why she loved Ashley and why she loved Rhett. Each man represented something different. Rhett was the future, was opportunity. Then you look at Ashley, who was love and passion and legacy and tradition.
As I was walking through that museum, I went, “There’s Damon, there’s Stefan, and there’s Elena… no, that’s not Elena. That’s Katherine. This is Katherine’s story. This is 1864. This is when she bit them. This isn’t our current story; this is yesterday’s story.” There, I started realizing, we’ve got to go there. And I’m not the flashback/period person ever, and I’m like, “Julie, we have to tell the story of Katherine, we have to tell the story of where it all began. We have to back up and show in flashback how Stefan and Damon were turned, and then she’ll have to come back.”
I love the theme because it was perfect for Katherine. You can see where they are and expect her in some way, like their trip to Atlanta in 1x11. Damon and Elena bonded over Katherine... Damon being in love with her and Elena being her doppelganger. Elena switches in 1x14 to talk dead mothers with Anna, but Anna isn't Damon and she doesn't care about Elena.
I love Damon's room in 2x12 because they do intentional things like that. Damon is moving on from Katherine, but they give Elena this book that speaks to 1864 because she would've liked him then... and they mix the scene with her saying she expected silk sheets lol. A great theme for their story going forward because it is about survival, about perseverance. And whatever fans feel about the love triangle, both Delena and Stelena were meant to be epic romances based on Elena's own heart.

We are an organization founded not too long after our namesake died.  Just thirteen years after she died, Maria Mitchell’s family members, her friends, colleagues, and former students came together to create the Nantucket Maria Mitchell Association in 1902.  In 1903, we were formally incorporated.  That is pretty remarkable – and shows you the affect Maria Mitchell had on  people – her teaching, her friendship, her mentorship, her ability to inspire.
Everything began in the Mitchell House at 1 Vestal Street – all the departments – until we were given or acquired the buildings and sites that make up the MMA today.  The first curators were Maria Mitchell’s cousins and their daughters; the cousins having lived at 1 Vestal Street with their parents after Maria Mitchell’s family moved to the Pacific Bank where William Mitchell was cashier.  To Maria’s cousins, the House was still their home, but now a museum, and things they did were maybe a bit different than you would think for a historic house museum – and the times were different too.
Thus, items that once belonged to Maria Mitchell were also used by the fledgling organization.  Her Dollond telescope, with which she discovered her comet in 1847, and her Alvan Clark telescope –were used for moon evenings in the yard – and then next door at the Maria Mitchell Vestal Street Observatory.  In fact, the lenses in her Clark telescope were removed and used as the guide on the telescope in the MMO for many years.  It was by chance and poking around many years ago that a conservator found the Dollond telescope’s other eyepieces in a drawer of the 1922 Astronomical Study of the MMO.
Now, it was in cleaning out the MMO’s Seminar Room (ca. 1987) for its renovation project, to be funded with a gift from a descendant of William Mitchell, that we located these.  While I am embarrassed that no one seemed to notice them, I am relieved that they were unearthed!  These are the eyepieces to Maria’s Alvan Clark telescope.  A five-inch refractor which she was able to work with Clark on creating when she was given $500.00 by the “Women of America,” headed by Elizabeth Peabody, in 1858.  Obviously, these were used during the MMO moon nights a long time ago and then nicely put away – in a drawer.  Thankfully, someone had made a wooden holder for them, thus keeping them all together.  I suspect it was likely Alvin Paddock, the Coffin School principal who assisted our first astronomer, margaret Harwood, who made this “holder.”  He was once a carpenter and started at the Coffin School as a teacher of woodworking. While the collections in the MMO do not fall under the Mitchell Housie collections, I am glad that these items can be reunited with the telescope and find a better home for display and storage.

Usually when you talk about the failings of TVD’s writing it’s about inconsistencies in mythology, characterization, and the like, but I was always upset at how little they utilized their setting. Like a small town in the Deep South that still does Civil War reenactments? So much potential to show the nuanced tensions that would be present there. I just think it would’ve been cool to see the intersection between the human history of the town and the supernatural—aside from the brothers. (1/)
“ Usually when you talk about the failings of TVD’s writing it’s about inconsistencies in mythology, characterization, and the like, but I was always upset at how little they utilized their setting. Like a small town in the Deep South that still does Civil War reenactments? So much potential to show the nuanced tensions that would be present there. I just think it would’ve been cool to see the intersection between the human history of the town and the supernatural—aside from the brothers. Like obviously I would expect Julie Plec to do it justice, and I wouldn’t want her to attempt, but imagine how much better the show would be if it confronted the fraught human history along with the supernatural one. I would have loved to see Bonnie as the revolutionary leading black witches and warlocks to freedom or finding a network of Bennetts in hiding. Her ancestral magic actually being sacred and shown as that rather than an obstacle. A Bonnie spin-off like this would be so dope.”
Oh for sure. I don’t really talk about the setting because it all comes back to the fact that the show is anti-black and they purposefully whitewash the history of the town. Like KW’s idea for the Stefan/Katherine/Damon triangle best demonstrates that:
So barring the fact that they absolutely did not achieve this, it’s a typical romanticization of the Old South and the Civil War era which of course means a whitewashing of history i.e. a whitewashing of what Mystic Falls’ history would be. The script mentions slavery overtly once and they mention it by having Carol Lockwood sweep it under the rug;  the tomb vampires refer to Harper as “boy” and Grams brings up how she and Stefan marched together in the 50s but that’s as far as the human history goes. Or, rather, that’s as far as the real human history goes. In season 8, Matt and his father have these chis on their shoulders because the Donovans were lower-class white people who “built this town” (not the black people who were enslaved and let’s forget the fact that the land would’ve been stolen from Indigenous peoples) who were excluded from Founding Family celebrations, they give Matt a speech about how he always felt left out but not Bonnie whose ancestors were marginalized and oppressed historically and even magically considering that her line seems always to be fucked over on a personal level by Elena’s. And then of course the finale when Bonnie and all of her female ancestors saved a town that erased them, tried to (or did) kill them, or enslaved them.
If the show really went into the setting of the town, there’s no way Bonnie would even be friends with Elena and Caroline or there’s no way that Grams would stay quiet about her friendship with girls who participate in these traditions and see nothing wrong with them.
So I do agree that if we got a nuanced and realistic portrayal of this town in Virginia and we saw Bonnie’s ancestors as revolutionary witches that led slave rebellions with AFRICAN-based magic and not this Latin shit, it would’ve been dope af.

How to become a Georgia Peach
“What an adventure!” is what I thought when I started my 10 month internship in Georgia Atlanta. From that moment on it has been a rollercoaster of many new things that I was going to explore. For my previous school I was chosen to do an internship at Chateau Elan Winery and resort in Braselton.
Besides doing my internship 5 days a week I had 2 off days every week. This meant that I had some spare time and that I was able to explore the city and the surroundings of the beautiful south! So I will start with some information about Atlanta.
Atlanta is a very big city, it is the capital and the biggest city of Georgia. It has some of the most important tourist attractions such as the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum, The World of Coca-Cola an the Georgia Aquarium, which is the second biggest aquarium in the world.
They love sports in the South, and they have various sport clubs that you can support and you can also watch games in the Mercedes Benz stadium, Sun trust park or the State farm Arena.
Are you curious about what else you can do in Atlanta and the surroundings? I will tell you more in my next blog!

Thank you so much for this blog. It has become one of my favorite. Do you live in Hollywood?
Thank you so much for your kind message, that’s so nice of you to say!
Unfortunately no, I’ve never even been to Hollywood- I live in England. But I’d love to visit one day and go to all the historic Old Hollywood sites! I visited Atlanta a while ago and went to the Gone With the Wind museums and Margaret Mitchell’s house, but that’s the closest I’ve been to real Old Hollywood history!

Okay questions from the writers guide. # 11 Books and/or authors who influenced you the most? Which ones as a kid and adult? What is your favorite book and why? 21. Who is/are your favourite character(s) to write?22. Who is/are your favourite pairing(s) to write? 42. How do you feel about love triangles? 46. Do you reread your own stories?47. Best way to procrastinate? 49. Which character would you most want to be friends with, if they were real?
Oh thank god, I have written myself into a corner and I need a distraction while I figure this out.  And this is gonna get really long if I do this all in one post, so if you don’t mind, Nonnie, I’m gonna break this up into one question at a time.
11. Books and/or authors who influenced you the most? Which ones as a kid and adult? What is your favorite book and why?
Oh, gosh. Okay. So I’m just gonna list a bunch of stuff, first, and then dig into the rest of it in a bit.  Books that mattered a LOT to me:
The Blue Sword by Robin McKinley
Persuasion by Jane Austen
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
The World According to Garp by John Irving
A Room with a View by E.M. Forester
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Doce cuentos peregrinos by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf
As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner
View with a Grain of Sand by Wislawa Szymborska
Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor
Twelfth Night by Shakespeare
Enough Rope by Dorothy Parker
Everything and Nothing by Jorges Luis Borges
By the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery
Matilda by Roald Dahl
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien
CivilWarLand in Bad Decline by George Saunders
And, like, this is just me spitballing and not looking at my bookshelves, so I am CLEARLY leaving shit out. So.  Let’s break this into parts, shall we?
Books that influenced me as a kid would be: anything by Robin McKinley (although The Blue Sword was and is my favorite), everything L.M. Montgomery wrote (although I was particularly fond of the Emily series), and I adored the Little House books as a kid.  Like, Laura was my imaginary friend, and I am not even joking about that. HOWEVER, I now recognize that there are All Sorts of problems with those books– I’m currently working through Prairie Fires which is an examination of the writing of the Little House books, and it is FASCINATING. I highly recommend it.  I also adored everything Roald Dahl wrote, and that’s something that’s stayed with me.  Although I think my favorite of his works, now that I think about it more deeply, would be his short stories– The Marvelous Story of Henry Sugar is brilliant, and The Swan makes me sob.
And– this sounds so weird, but I’d include Gone with the Wind in this category?  I read it when I was ten (because I was a little shit and was determined to find the longest book possible and read ALL of it), and I’m from Atlanta, so it’s– kinda everywhere.  (My town has a GWtW museum on the square, and there’s a part that recreates the bit where Scarlet shoots the Yankee soldier in the stairwell with mannequins?  The South is an odd place.) Anyway, it’s the only time either of my parents ever talked to me about anything I wanted to read.  I remember when my dad bought me the book, he sat down with me and told me I could ALWAYS read anything I wanted– they’d never stop me from reading something. But it was important, he said, to remember that just because an idea is in a book doesn’t make it right, and that there were words in that book used to describe people of color, and ideas about race and people, that weren’t acceptable. Not in our house, not in school, not in public, not in private: not ever. And it was okay to read the book, and to find good things about the story, but it wasn’t okay to ignore the fact that there were ideas in it that were wrong, and it was important to ask questions about them.
And then he let me read the book, and figure it out myself.  I’m really grateful for that, honestly.  I think it showed me, early, that creative works– that culture– is complicated.  That people are complicated.  That curiosity and appreciation of things that are beautiful doesn’t give you a pass on problematic ideas that rest of the lessening of others.
And Dad followed through on the “you can read whatever you want” thing, too, by the way.  I wanted to write my junior research paper in Brit Lit on Victorian morality and the articulation of male homosexuality in Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Grey, and my teacher nearly flipped her shit.  She was a nice lady, but she was in her sixties, and this was 1999 in conservative, suburban Georgia.  She said she’d need a note from my parents if I were determined to do it, so I told my dad.  And he rolled his eyes so hard I’m surprised his retinas didn’t detach, and then wrote, “[My daughter] can read and research whatever she likes, and you can get over it,” on a sheet of paper and signed his name, and it was the BEST THING EVER.  He also thought it was hilarious when I got in trouble for reading Burrough’s Naked Lunch after graduation testing (apparently, that book is not “school appropriate”), although he doesn’t have a high opinion of Burroughs as a writer.  (Neither do I, nowadays.  I was going through a phase.)
This is what happens when your dad is a political journalist who’s as big a book nerd as you are.
As an adult? Oh, man, I love me some post-modernism, and I’m stupidly fond of a good short story.  I’m a particular sucker for “boom” writing out of Latin America from the 1960s and 70s; like, give me ALL the magical realism.  La luz es como agua by Garcia Marquez might be the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever read in my life, and BOTH of my online nom de plumes (the one I created at seventeen and the one I use now) are both references to writers who use stream of consciousness. (SomeInstant comes from Borges y yo, porque “no sé cuál de los dos escribe esta página.”)  I’m also more than halfway in love with Virginia Woolf, and I think I can recite most of the first chapter to Mrs. Dalloway? Although To the Lighthouse is my favorite, outside of her journals.
As to my favorite book: there is no such thing. There is only my favorite right now, and now, and now, and now.  Although if I had to nail something to the wall, I’d maybe pick Wislawa Szymborska’s collection of poetry, View with a Grain of Sand, because there’s not an imperfect poem in that thing.  I go back to her again and again, whenever I need a rock to lean on.  She’s glorious.

Summer Staycation: How to have fun while staying at Tech for the Summer.
While taking classes and working over the Summer, you’ve got to get creative with how you find relaxation. The best thing about Atlanta is it’s amazing ability to support what I like to call: a staycation. You stay near home, while at the same time going on fun and having adventures you wouldn’t normally have on an ordinary day.
If you’ve got a little cash and some room for learning, the historic Centennial Olympic Park is quite literally only a five- minute walk south from North Ave apartments. Here is housed the World of Coke museum (because Atlanta is the hometown of both the drink and the company,) the Georgia Aquarium, and the Center for Civil and Human Rights. Sometimes, if you do your research and get your timing right, you can find times where admission is free, like in this picture from last Tuesday night after a free party at the CCHR.
Tumblr media
If you’re into museums, hop MARTA or drive up to Buckhead, where lives the Atlanta History Center, with its fantastic exhibits, expansive grounds, and of course, living history actors that will take you back to the Civil War on one side of the campus, and then take blazing with a jazz party in the 1930s on the other.
Natural features are abundant within a an hour drive of Tech as well. Stone Mountain is childhood favorite, one which I adamantly still think should be one of the wonders of the United States. Hike to the top (my favorite time is sunrise) or ride the train around the mountain, or go see the laser show at night. Kennesaw Mountain is also close, with many peaks to hike, and a surprise Civil War artillery nest at the top. Farther north, the mountains lie ripe for weekend trips, whether you’re into camping, or mountain biking or BarBQue; we’ve got it all up there.
If you’re a relaxation-by-shopping or a hands-on history kind of person, the city of Monroe (just an hour east of Atlanta) is one of the antiquing capitals of the southeast. As a history person, I’ve taken many a weekend trip to go scope out all the cool things they have set up on display in the middle of old 19th century factories.
Oakland cemetery is about a 15 minute drive south of campus (also very easily accessible by MARTA) and is the oldest graveyard in Atlanta, home to many famous people like Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones, and Maynard Jackson. It is a giant landspace right here in downtown and serves for a very peaceful walking spot, if you just need to get away from it all for a few hours.
Tumblr media
While bragging about Atlanta, I will say that the beach, and the beautiful and historic Savannah is also only about 4 hours away, yet again another ideal option for a weekend trip.
Atlanta also offers so many arts programs throughout the Summer, from free concerts in Piedmont Park, to art festivals by Krogg Street, to the many different shows that come to the Fox, you will have to run very far to avoid being entertained this Summer. The clip below is from the free Atlanta Symphony Orchestra concert in Piedmont Park last weekend.
Tumblr media
Tech sits right in the middle of all these perfect adventures just waiting to be embarked on, even while you’re stuck at school or at work while all your friends may be going on fancy trips abroad. What’s your favorite thing to explore within a day’s drive of Georgia Tech?
