Apparently, Margaret Keane passed away four days ago, and hardly anyone heard about it.
She was the OG painter of slightly creepy, big-eyed children whose work exploded in popularity during the 1960's. Her husband Walter originally tried to take credit for her art (and threatened her to keep her quiet), but she eventually divorced him, and the public learned the truth.
Her work--and her legacy--is part of our pop culture, and should never be forgotten.

(via Margaret Keane, Painter of Sad-Eyed Waifs, Dies at 94 - The New York Times)
Margaret Keane, the artist whose doleful, saucer-eyed waifs earned millions in an international kitsch craze a half-century ago, and who inspired an epic art fraud by a husband whose claims to have executed her work were demolished in a “paint-off” in court, died on Sunday at her home in Napa, Calif. She was 94.

Whenever I see someone ripping off a writer's work I think of the climax of the movie Big Eyes. Which was based on the real story of Walter Keane taking credit for paintings done by his wife, Margaret.
After he constantly abused and berated her, Margaret finally sued Walter for credit and copyright of all the paintings. Walter vehemently stated that he had painted them all. A judge demanded they both paint a big-eyed child, right there in court, in front of him and the jury.
Of course, Walter couldn't do it. Margaret did it easily.
This is what I'd love to happen to every hack "writer" who plagiarizes another.
The fake should sit in court with the writer she or he ripped off. They should be given a prompt and one hour to write. Right there, in front of the judge, lawyers, and jury. They wouldn't be allowed to use a laptop, a smartphone, not even a dictionary or thesaurus. Just a pad of paper and a pen.
A serious writer, a professional writer, could do it without batting an eye. And a hack, dependent on plagiarism or AI, would be proven to be a hack.
