Wild daisies at my doorstep.
These wild daisies were growing in a field right behind our house. Look closely for bugs of all kinds. I thought I would give Affinity Photo a try for a while as my post-processing software with a little extra selective sharpening using Topaz Sharpen AI.

Night Sky at Litchfield Lake
The night sky from our friend’s cottage at Lake Litchfied, QC. I’m always amazed at the colors the camera picks up from the different stars, especially in the milky way.
Two photos were used for this image, one of the stars, and the other of the trees light painted with an LED headlamp.

Bright rainbow from my front porch.
A very fine misty rain was falling and my guess is that the wind was causing the ripples. The dark clouds in the distance really made the colors pop. The small white clouds I found added that extra bit of interest.

Morning Fog – Annapolis Royal, NS
There was fog on the Annapolis Royal Marsh when I went for walk with a friend around the French Basin Trail in Annapolis Royal, NS.
A female Wood Duck happened by and added just a bit of interest to something that would have been an otherwise dull picture.

Spiderweb – Annapolis Royal, NS
I came across a spiderweb bejeweled with dew drops, while out on a morning walk with a friend around the French Basin Trail in Annapolis Royal, NS.
You don’t get a chance to use the word bejeweled too often, so might as well 😊 .

Riot of Windblown Yellow
A riot of yellow windblown flowers.
I sat right at the edge of a large clump of these bright yellow flowers. My lens was maybe 20cm from the closest blooms. The slightest wind would cause them to blur; and when it really blew, they would just whip around in front of me.

Weeny in the Corn
My wife carved this most excellent Hallowe’en pumpkin and I thought it deserved to be preserved for posterity.
I took Weeny O Pumpkin out into the corn fields behind our house. I gathered some burnt bits of wood from when they cleared the field a few years back and built her an altar to sit on. An off-camera flash with a white umbrella was used to light her from the side. The mouth and eyes were, quite naturally, lit with her own good candle which we had used when she was on our porch greeting all the trick or treating little ghouls and goblins that visited us.
The final shot is a composite of sky, light painted corn stalks and Weeny herself.

Chutes de Plaisance - Plaisance, QC
Part of the Chutes de Plaisance (Plaisance Waterfalls), Plaisance, QC.
With it’s 63m of elevation, this is one of the biggest waterfall in the region. They are easily accessed from a parking lot and an easy 1 km hike. It being late spring, the amount of water going over these falls was still very high.

White Trillium – 2022
A large drift of White Trillium.
This large drift of White Trillium grows across a busy two-lane blacktop from the Jessup's Falls Conservation Area. For some reason they are much more numerous outside the conservation area than within it. Maybe because they are on private property, they don’t get trampled on like the ones in the conservation area do. I got on my hands and knees to get down low enough to shoot along the ground to try and compress the perspective and cause the flowers further back to crowd the scene.

In the fall, the bumblebees all converge on the huge sunchoke “bush” that grows in our backyard.
The crazy swirly background was accomplished in camera using the bokeh filter below.
Tumblr media
Simply cut out of thin cardboard, the small holes act in the same way as the single hole in a regular bokeh filter would except that the multiple variously shaped bokeh it produces all overlap. The larger hole at the bottom provides a bokeh free area to shoot through. It is held in place by a cheap Cokin filter holder knockoff. Adjusting the filter up and down and rotating the filter holder gives some control over the position and amount of swirliness achieved.
Poste-processed with Affinity Photo v2, with the bumblebee and some of the flowers sharpened using Topaz Sharpen AI.

Portage-du-Fort, 2022
Looking out across an arm of the Ottawa River to Île Limerick from the municipal dock.
There are no fortifications in Portage-du-Fort in the MRC de Pontiac, the closest ones having been upstream at Fort-Coulonge. No one knows for sure where the name is actually from.

Winter Stream – Alfred, ON - 2021
Another shot of my favorite little stream (more here , here and here).
I took this one back in 2021 and never posted it for some reason. I just love how the new ice just kind of hugs the banks and of course those swirly ice patterns where to die for. You can see more of these ice patterns here and here.

Flooded - Chutes de Plaisance - Plaisance, QC
The fast-moving waters of the flooding rapids upstream from the Chutes de Plaisance (Plaisance Waterfalls), Plaisance, QC.
I took multiple images at a small aperture and long exposure. The images were averaged in-camera to enhance the blur effect. It’s almost like using a dark ND filter except that it somehow manages to introduce a “squiggle” in the fast moving water as the motion is not continuous since it is broken up between each frame.
