Me, starting Bloodborne: Huh, so this is like a Gothic Horror Dark Souls? Cool.
Me now, eyes bloodshot, hunched over my computer screen like a goblin at 3AM, consuming every bit of insane cosmic lore I can: Mergo’s Lullaby has the same tempo as your walking speed so this clearly symbolizes that the Hunter is-

Poor baby Mergo. Do you know what I know? About how it all went so very wrong? Dear baby Mergo, I’ll tell you as we go. I’ll sing it all to you in song!
Death is for certain. And we will all die! So please tell me the reason that it is you cry?
And so I ask you join in this sad melody! Oh little Mergo won't you sing it with me!

Was listening to Bloodborne's soundtrack and I can't stop thinking of the horrifying genius in making Mergo's Wet Nurse's theme being a simple music box.

Idk if you've been asked this about bloodborne before, but do you have a favourite piece of music from the game?
the quieter ones like The Night Unfurls or Lullaby for Mergo have stuck with me the most over the years
But as far as boss music goes I really like Lady Maria, Rom, Gascoigne, The Celestial Emissaries, and the Living Failures' boss themes

E-EXCUSE ME?! (That drawing also made me think of how Ludwig's eyes were growing on his right shoulder too, so it could really be Moon's side effect but) EXCUSE ME! This theory sounds SUPER interesting?? So you think there were many Dolls mass-produced, and the one we meet in the Hunter's Dream is just one that "survived"? Or like what? Can you please elaborate, this sounds like a really unique take?
Oh you mentioned it on your reblog but yeah it is reminiscent of Ludwig! It's also really interesting how he's the only beast that obtain additional eyes... but instead of being in his head it create another head- ok anyway we'll talk about it another day let's go winter lanterns theory! XD
This time I will "try" to not divague too much on all the other theories & interpretations I know/have or we'll still be on it tomorrow 😂(sorry I failed)
Because if you ask me seriously what I think are the winter lanterns well I don't know 💀 I'm not sure at all what the hell are they, why they're here and how they came to life. I have/know tons of possible ideas. I guess for a fic I could choose but canonically I really don't know what they are for sure. (I won't be referencing the demake versions that is really cool btw or the comics ver because I haven't read it yet!)
So well I think everyone who played Bloodborne know what this abomina- I mean enemy is.
Tumblr media
They have a part of the doll body (form, clothes, wooden joints hands and fingers like the doll) they're made are made of messengers and have eyes (like mensis brain) and inflicted frenzy like the giant brain. + they have those horrible little jaws... and they sing this...
I'm unsure some say it's Mergo's lullaby other said it's the hunter dream music, some said it's neither... so if someone know... because really idk. It's beautiful yet disturbing. the voice is too deep and distorded.
(Did you know the doll was supposed to hum a lullaby in her sleep? When she nap there's black corner on the screen like there's a dialogue but there's nothing, it's the last thing remnant of this cut content. it's actually in ver 1.00 apparently)
They can be found in the nightmare frontier (3 of them I think), the nightmare of mensis (5?) and the fishing hamlet (2) in the hunter's nightmare (dlc). (Ok 10 of them, add the doll 11, add Maria 12, like the 12 hours of a clock. COINCIDENCES?!?! cough couch sorry yes it's probably the case but still hahah it's funny)
Ok so about the theory I was referencing here and referenced once in a while. I originally saw it on reddit but sadly I can't find the link anymore 😞
Basically, the original speculation said that the winter lanterns could have been created by Mensis (eventually healing church), to take care of Mergo, if I remember well. And then they become corrupted by the nightmare.
After thinking about this and other theories I read concerning the doll (that she could have been created by healing church originally and Gehrman recover the doll after/was given to him and then he made the clothes etc) and the extra knowledge I have on Japanese dolls (yes I made researches oh jp doll and it's even more interesting than the European victorian era one ahah) I could share the following ideas :
That maybe the winter lanterns were originally created by the church/mensis to help them + hunters in the nightmares. Because it was too dangerous to let humans go there for too long. But eventually, because no one cared properly for them, after a while, they become corrupted (or after Mensis did their ritual) and well become like this*. They would have been created after the original dolls because that had lot of potential or smt. They have clothes really similar to the doll but also the black church attire and without the dlc they are highly associated with the lecture building aka linked with church & mensis.
It's interesting to note 2 thing :
Their name come from the alkekengi plant (more explanation on reddit). they are called Hozuki in Japanese. (they even made little dolls with the grain hehe)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*So about the dolls in general. I believed the doll in Bloodborne is highly inspired by the mourning doll from victorian era (I explained here a little) but it's interesting to see how they traditionally view dolls in Japan (because the devs are Japanese). If you're familiar with the culture/legend in shintoism/buddhism, they believe that objects and especially the one we cherish the most, have a soul. So they think dolls have a soul and they have special ceremonies to dispose of them when they aren't needed anymore called "ningyo kuyo". A way to thank them to have been there during childhood and to free their spirit by purification (burning them in a ceremony with prayers etc). But why? Well if it's not done it's believed that the soul stay but would become an evil spirit. because they were abandoned and not taken care of anymore. there's Yoke who might come from here or another good exemple : branette/banette the Pokemon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they turned into nightmares monsters. The doll was actually treat with care and respected, was loved. Not the others. They probably didn't even have a face...
---
There's really tons of other speculations on them so have a few others here as well :
Some people think it's failed attempt to the doll creation and they were discarded/abandoned but it don't make sense to me, are at least not like this. it's also highly possible that's it's some kind of "echo" of the doll + messengers. the 2 thing that are supposed to be to always be safe and nice. Some think only the hunter/us could see them or see them like this. It's unclear.
Also I do headcanon in part that they could have been Maria very own nightmares (they do have horrifying similarities with the patients of the researches hall... and some they are always in the nightmares).
Tumblr media
The patients head (alone) cause frenzy as well. I feel like if the experiments had succeed (obtained additional eyes on the inside, for the patients), it would have been way too similar to a winter lantern. + they look similar to the doll and if we go on the headcanon that Maria used to wear smt really similar to the female black church attire during her time at the research hall well...they're based on her too. I imagined she could have been plague by nightmares of those but it's really headcanons territory.
Another theory I saw earlier while doing researches : they could have been human actually who transformed, past black church female doctors or hunters, but that don't explain the wood hands or why they transformed and all the other guys just died.
So yeah there's way too much thing it's always really interesting to know what people think
Next time I might share my more detailed headcanon concerning their creation + the doll hehe.

If you're still doing these can I ask top 5 songs from the Bloodborne OST?
absolutely you can!
the first hunter is on my "secret emotions" playlist for a reason. it's like, no matter how you feel about [redacted], you will be struck by a sense of regret and grief as you two fight to the death in this field of beautiful white flowers, the full moon looming meaningfully overhead, the hunter's dream burning to the ground in the distance,
lady maria of the astral clocktower. you ever search youtube for "lady maria fight no hud" and let the music and visuals wash over you and just marvel at how gotdamn cinematic it all is? y-yeah me neither. but seriously, it's such a fitting theme for her. the beginning is anxiety personified, heightening that feeling of "OH SHIT OH FUCK" you get from the cutscene and the transition into the boss fight where she's slowly advancing on you and you start to suspect you're about to get your ass handed to you. the bits with the choir are really powerful but also discordant and unsettling, especially with the sort of piercing wail you can hear over the top of it at parts. if you manage to time the fight so maria's phases/power ups sync up with the major turning points of the song it's just awesome in the original sense of the word. bone rattling and shiver inducing.
omen. i've seen the cinematic trailer/menu movie so many fucken times that if i put this song on i can pretty much just watch the cinematic behind my eyes. that moment when the hunter flicks open the saw cleaver and walks away with Purpose as the scene fades out? talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular,
ludwig the holy blade. i watch a lot of soulsborne speedruns and 9/10 times the streamer successfully blasts through the ludwig fight somebody in chat will be like "we didn't get to hear the music >(" and like. how can you argue with that. do the fight again but worse, streamer, 2:39 onward is the best part of the track!!
lullaby for mergo. what is it about music boxes that makes everything feel a hundred times more melancholy?? and this track is sad enough to begin with, associated with the loss of both child Great Ones (mergo) and human children (gascoigne's daughter(s), if you try and help them).

There's this fun little bug in the Chalice Dungeons with those bells. There's this tile with a big bell in the middle that, when hit, attracts all enemies in the adjacent rooms. You can also ring the bell if you play the music box within a certain distance from the bell--the music box that stuns Gascoigne and interrupts certain Ebrietas animations.
Along with that last point, I feel pretty certain this is not by design. However, I am also annoying, and like to consider the errors in a work of fiction as part of the construction of its thesis.
So let's say the music box not only affects Gascoigne, but also Ebrietas, canonically. Could the music box, which reminds Gascoigne of his separation from his family, ring true similarly for Ebrietas, who's found praying at what is ostensibly the grave of her lost child? The melody is the same as Mergo's Lullaby, indicating the melody itself is connected to mourning dead infants. What about the bells? Could their interaction suggest something about the bell's purpose? Or maybe a clue to the melody's origin? After all, these are bells in the Loran and Isz dungeons, which would mean if the tune and the bells are connected, then the melody would be ancient in Bloodborne's timeline.
Is anyone else asking this question except for me?

Points of interest about Old Hunter Henryk (some evident, some possible)
• There was a superstition amongst Old Hunters to wear double-wrapped belt around their right leg (no wonder since it is the leg Gehrman lost + all these wheelchair Old Hunters), but Henryk wears belts around both legs! Perhaps he just was extra careful back then.
Tumblr media
• His life was "tragically long" not because of being partnered with Gascoigne, but because of his own power! Excerpt from original Japanese script (here, by Last Protagonist ( x )) goes like this:
Tumblr media
Basically he is a very skilled Hunter who expected to die in one of those hunts but that never happened. Wonder what that makes of the Paleblood Hunter being able to kill him? Simplest explanation is something-something immortal-for-night Moon boost, but game play aside I think it works better if 'the only thing that was able to weaken him was a broken heart'.
• Younger one of Gascoigne's daughters mentions a 'granddad' next to Viola and Gascoigne, which very likely refers to Henryk as he is the closest male character connected to this family. He could've been Viola's dad, or at least this is just how he's perceived in this family.
• Funny since Henryk is a slavic name that means something like 'the most important person in the house'. I dunno if that was intentional, but would be interesting if he actually turned out to direct all errands and chores in the family xD
• Henryk has a mole on the right side of his nose.
• His set has high bolt resistance which makes one think of Loran, but it is actually even more obvious devs implied that relation, seeing how in beta his set JUST was Loran Hunter set ( x ) :
Tumblr media
• Henryk is brown and is connected to Loran, just like Afflicted Beggar (who turns into Abhorrent Beast that are exclusive for Loran dungeons). Makes sense they are similar since Loran was desert-coded place, however they also share exact same, pixel-to-pixel mole on their nose in data (datamined sliders are here ( x )). This detail being kept might be interesting, like an idea that they're blood related or something! (I struggle to blame this on laziness of creators in altering the model seeing many things are different between the two)
Tumblr media
• Yamamura has Throwing Knives in equipment that he never actually uses ( x ) , seeing how he was part of the League the knives likely are connected to Henryk. He trained him to throw them :(
Tumblr media
• Both of Henryk's summons are shared with Younger Madaras Twin. I guess he is an expert in working with feral men xD
• It is possible that both notes mentioning Rom as 'Byrgenwerth Spider' are his! One note like this is in Byrgenwerth, and it is weird there she is not mentioned by the name there, as students would know who she is! Both of his summons are Byrgenwerth-related, and summon places always have to do with the summoned character's context. Another note like this is in the nook after Tomb of Oedon which Gascoigne guards, which is also location you kill him at, which also leads to Oedon Chapel guarded by a Pthumerian man. Again, lost in translation but in original note says 'hides our invisible lord', not 'our lost master' so odds are it refers to Oedon. Or at the very least this one was written by someone there upon learning from Henryk. Basically Henryk might have been a very good spy for the League after all (better than Yamamura that did get caught :( )
• Even more likely since him being 'quiet' and him being 'so strong he can't die in a battle already' are mentioned back-to-back as if they're connected. Throwing Knives are also sneaky. Basically not only he is strong, but he is sneaky and careful af. Maybe him and Gascoigne were such an effective duo because Gascoigne as the one bigger and more aggressive would draw all attention to himself - so Henryk could backstab anyone meanwhile.
• Music box treasured by Gascoigne and Viola plays Lullaby for Mergo. Seeing Henryk's implied roots to the pthumerians, maybe this box was his gift for them (for the wedding?), or at the very least he's likely the one knowing this melody from somewhere (and Gascoigne maybe just loved it).
• The sets of Executioners and Henryk's share the detail of this long row of buttons on the lower part:
Tumblr media
Might or might not be coinsidental, but seeing how Logarius is 99% a Pthumerian and not 'just very tall' it could be a shared drip from cultural background?
• Henryk drops the weakest form of Heir rune:
Tumblr media
(HUGE thanks to my bestie @val-of-the-north for compiling the runes and their location, you dumbass post the WHOLE reference on Tumblr before I evict you from this plane of reality it is so useful AAAAAAAAA)
Other placements are curious too; for one, 5 out of 7 Yahar'gul Hunters have brown skin too, which opens even more Loran questions imo. Pthumeru Ihyll is also the place associated with Queen Yharnam (and she shares boss theme with Logarius fsr).
Also this rune is the one that lets you gain Blood Echoes (that are dying wills, in more literal translation) from visceral attacks. Remember what I said about Oedon Chapel and stuff? Well, both of Oedon runes are associated with drawing Hunter's power from the blood, and although this Great One has no form, their true nature is said to be 'spilled blood'.
Tangent but I just want to say Henryk dropping this rune is an interesting detail, and even deeper dig into his 'background'. The context of the rune also implies inheriting wills of someone upon as much as just spilling their blood, not even necessarily killing them. Makes me think Henryk's mind is very full of sentiments and unfulfilled hopes of many others despite him being silent, he might as well have the ability to understand struggles of a person/beast once he seriously wounds them.
• It is possible that Djura lost an eye because of Henryk. Sliders don't reflect a missing eye, but Djura's set has his right eye covered and his slider has a scar across his face going through that eye, that looks like a cut wound. Henryk is known for his knives, besides they are both Old Hunters, besides Valtr's weapon is made by Powder Kegs so maybe they had an armed conflict (maybe Valtr's 'fault' was in it, too).
• Old Hunters favored two types of hats, his is 'cap' one like what Maria and Djura have. Djura's hat got tattered terribly (nonetheless became a style nowadays Hunters copy lol), but Maria had decorative feathers, just like him. Basically Henryk is the last one with this style of hat.

Tbh a slight thorn at the side of the idea that Rom likewise was a scholar in Byrgenwerth and Yurie too is the note in there calling Rom 'Byrgenwerth Spider'. It IS a bit odd to call her that if people in Byrgenwerth know who she is, right?
But I think one of the explanations could be that Henryk could have left this note! He helps to fight both the Shadows and Rom herself so he knows the place, but he would probably not know of an individual scholar and her fate. Besides another note about Byrgenwerth Spider is found in Oedon Chapel which is a location close to where you fight both Gascoigne and Henryk so who knows how the word spread. (This one's a bit lost in translation btw, in Japanese it is more evident that note in Oedon is someone complaining that because of Rom's concealment they can't hear Oedon anymore, or maybe can't communicate with an Amygdala nearby, even, as it says 'invisible/unmeetable lord' instead of 'lost master')
Doesn't help that presumed base of the League is IN the woods, they might have been spying! I also thought that since Music Box plays Mergo's Lullaby + Henryk is subtly hinted to have Loran ties, maybe this music box was his wedding gift to Gascoigne and Viola - but initially he saught Byrgenwerth in his own time to consult them about its mysterious origin as experts in dungeons and archeology and history.
But yeah yet again Henryk has hella potential without a single dialogue note (as always)
