Side stage at Royal Nevada, Las Vegas, 1955 – by Loomis Dean.
Beyond the showgirls are fountains of “The Dancing Waters,” the first water show in Las Vegas, a distant forerunner of the Bellagio fountains. The system of pipes, motors, jets, and a light show, was created in West Germany for an Industrial Exhibition, then traveled the U.S. In Las Vegas it was the feature attraction at Royal Nevada in ’55-56. The live entertainment got second-billing to the fountain.
After Royal Nevada it went to the Desert Inn, and traveled So Cal. After another run in Las Vegas at Circus Circus in ’69, it became a permanent fixture at Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim CA.
Heavyweight Star to Make Nightly Shows Attractive. Review-Journal, 4/19/55; A. Mosby, United Press Hollywood. “Popular New Star Has No Sex Appeal.” Review-Journal, 5/4/55; C. Jepsen. “Dancing Waters.” OC Historical Roundup, 7/10/2010.

“Sailing stones” left tracks as they drifted across Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, California, 1952.

Tumblr media
LIFE’s 1952 story on the Racetrack Playa described this photo as being from a “ghost experiment,” guessing that an amateur scientist had tied up the rock to keep it from moving, but over time the rope had eventually rotted away.
