There was nothing that the students of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry loved more than sleeping in on the weekends. The professors had grown accustomed to being greeted by less than a handful of students in the Great Hall for breakfast when there was no class to follow. However, Hogsmeade weekends were a different story.
On Hogsmeade weekends, the students were up and ready to go as soon as the first piece of toast appeared on the table. Everyone was much more joyful and lively, inside and outside of their dorms.
Y/n L/n was hardly the first one to wake up in the morning, no matter what the rest of the day entailed. She was perfectly content with having to rush if it meant she could stay in bed for a few extra minutes. Lily Evans, however, was not.
“If you don’t get out of that bed in the next three seconds–” Lily started, only to be cut off by a snorting Marlene.
“What? You’ll ground her?”
“Yeah mom, five more minutes,” Y/n’s voice was muffled by her pillow, which she had placed over her eyes at the first hint of sunlight.
“One,” Lily started.
“Are you actually giving me a count down right now?” she asked, unbothered.
“Two.”
“Oh come on Lils,” she raised her head from underneath the pillow.
“Three.”
“Okay, okay, I’m up,” she moaned, genuinely frightened at what Lily might do if she stayed in bed.
Lily smiled and clapped her hands together, ushering Y/n to her vanity and sitting her down. She wasn’t going to ask Lily what she was doing, but the look on her face showed that she so eagerly wanted her to.
“Why?” was all she had to say before Lily started her rant.
“You,” she emphasized, “have a date to get ready for.” Lily squealed, grabbing the girls hair and contemplating what she was going to do with it.
“No I do not.”
“You and Sirius are going to Hogsmeade by yourselves for the whole day. Sounds like a date to me,” Marlene chimed in, earning a harsh glare from Y/n through the mirror.
“He’d have to like me for it to be a date,” she spoke matter-of-factly. When she was met with two unamused looks, she asked, “You two actually think the Sirius Black likes me?”
“Yes,” neither of them stopped to contemplate.
“Oh, whatever. Alice is actually going on a date today. Why don’t you pester her?” she attempted to change the subject.
“They did. Now it’s your turn,” Alice spoke from her bed.
“It’s not a date,” she whined, nevertheless allowing Lily to start on her hair.
———————————————————————
“I’m telling you guys, it’s a date!” Sirius repeated for what felt like the one hundredth time that morning.
James raised a quizzical eyebrows at him. “Are you sure?”
“Yes!” Sirius threw his hands up in exasperation.
“Did she say it was a date?” Remus asked, walking up to stand beside James.
“Well, no,” Sirius started, “but it is, okay?”
“How do you know?” James asked, still not believing his friend.
“Prongs, we're going to Hogsmeade by ourselves for the whole day, what else could that mean?”
“You do that all the time, you git,” Remus chuckled walking towards the bathroom, seeming through with the conversation.
“Yeah, but this time felt different.”
Remus stopped dead in his tracks, turning around and smirking at the boy. “How so?”
James and Remus plopped themselves on the foot of Sirius’ bed.
“This oughta be good,” Peter spoke up from his bed across the room. Sirius glared at him, before looking down at his feet.
“I… well...she… you know, I don’t have to explain anything to you wankers,” Sirius gave up on thinking of a good reason.
“Now, if you three will excuse me, I have a date to get ready for.”
As he walked towards the bathroom door, he gave Peter a swift smack to the back of the head.
———————————————————————
As Y/n squeezed past yet another group of students, she wondered what the village looked like when there weren’t so many rambunctious teens running around.
She imagined it to be peaceful and quiet, with older witches and wizards stopping ever so often to greet each other. She figured that was why they always gave her and her fellow students such harsh glares.
She was pulled from her thoughts by a loud cough coming from beside her.
“Have you heard a word I’ve said?” Sirius asked, glaring playfully at the girl beside him.
“You were probably talking about yourself, so I doubt I missed anything,” she quipped.
Sirius chuckled softly, wrapping his arm around her shoulder.
“Well, you actually just agreed to go to Madam Pudifoot’s with me, so…” he stopped to pat her shoulder, “lead the way.”
“In your dreams, Black,” she rolled her eyes, hoping to Godric he was joking.
“Every night,” he winked, causing her to remove his arm and walk a couple of steps in front of him.
Sirius took that moment to take in everything around him. There were countless people in the village, yet she wanted to go with him. He smiled softly to himself. Not a date his ass. He felt a surge of courage, and decided to do something he had wanted to for a long time.
“Are you coming or not?” she startled him.
He looked at her and his smile only grew. He walked quickly to stand beside her and reached down to grab her hand. He pulled her forward towards The Three Broomsticks.
Y/n’s face flushed immediately. What felt like a shock of electricity flowed through her body. He had always been affectionate, but he had never held her hand. She was freaking out, but he didn’t seem to be thinking twice about it. When Sirius looked back towards her and tugged on her hand to make her walk faster, she decided that he must have meant nothing by it. After all, there was no way he could like her.
She smiled bashfully and fell into step next to the boy, talking normally as if her stomach wasn’t doing flips. Little did she know, Sirius felt the same way.
———————————————————————
The more Y/n thought about her day with Sirius, the more confused she got. They always had their own days together. Why did Sirius suddenly hold her hand like it was nothing. Maybe it was nothing; maybe she was overreacting. Either way, she couldn’t shake the feeling of unease when she thought about it meaning nothing to Sirius.
The pair got back to the castle way later than expected, having lost track of time. She had tried to avoid her dorm mates ever since she stepped back into the castle. She needed to take time to think about what had happened before explaining it to anyone else. What if it was a date? What if Sirius did like her?
That’s why she found herself laying on the couch in the Gryffindor common room at midnight, still thinking about Sirius.
When Sirius returned to the castle, he couldn’t wait to find the marauders to tell them every single detail of his day. He practically ran to their dorm and threw the door open.
“It was a date,” he smirked cockily, strutting over to his bed.
James’ head shot up. “No way!”
Sirius took his time pulling off his shirt, hoping to build the suspense.
“Yeah, guess I was right. What’s new?” he questioned, causing Remus to roll his eyes. Once he was fully changed, he plopped down on his bed, lifting his hands behind his head and glancing towards Remus with a face that screamed ‘I told you so.’
“What makes you so sure?” Remus raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, did she tell you,” Peter walked out of the bathroom, having been eavesdropping.
“No, but I held her hand,” Sirius smiled to himself, trying to hide his blush at the thought of his hand in yours.
“Oh wow, that sure seals the deal,” Peter sarcastically remarked. Sirius sent him a glare.
“Shut it, Wormtail.”
“He has a point, Pads,” James started, earning a surprised look from Sirius. “Don’t you guys hold hands all the time?”
“No, Prongs. We don’t.”
“Well you might as well. You’re always all over each other,” Remus grimaced. Sirius squinted his eyes at Remus, before huffing to himself.
“Whatever,” Sirius rolled his eyes, standing up from his position on his bed. “I don’t have to take this from you.”
“No, please don’t go,” Remus monotoned, clearly bored with Sirius’ antics. James laughed at Remus, then turned to Sirius who was looking him dead in the eyes.
James made a tight line with his lips, trying his hardest not to laugh. When Sirius narrowed his eyes at him, he couldbt hold it in any longer.
Sirius shook his head, muttering to himself “I have the worst friends,” and walked out the door.
He descended the staircase and trudged towards the couch. What if they were right? What if it wasn’t a date?
Lost in his thoughts, Sirius nearly yelped when he saw someone laying down on the couch he was about to sit on.
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t– Y/n?”
Y/n chuckled lightly, moving her legs out of the way so he could sit down. She patted the spot beside her, and Sirius plopped down, throwing an arm over her shoulder.
“What are you doing down here?” she looked up curiously at the boy.
“I could ask you the same thing,” he nidded his head at her to emphasize the word ‘you’.
Sirius moved his eyes from her face to her hair and started running his fingers through it. They settled into a comfortable silence, content with being beside each other.
However, Sirius couldn’t shake the odd feeling he was getting. They had done this very thing hundreds of times, but something felt different. He looked back towards her and noticed she was staring into the fireplace, lost in thought.
Scrunching his eyebrows together, he decided to ask her what was wrong.
“S’matter?” he shook her from her trance. Y/n glanced up at him and blushed, shaking her head.
“Known you long enough to tell when you’re lying, love,” he nudged her side with his. “Come on, what’s bothering you?”
“It’s silly,” she started, but was cut off by Sirius’ stern glance. She knew not to argue with him; he never had been very patient.
She looked down at her hands rested in her lap, fingers fiddling together. Sirius reached his hand up and lightly grabbed her chin, coaxing her to look at him. When their eyes met, he offered her a reassuring smile.
“Why did you hold my hand?” she blurted, eyes staying trained on the boy beside her.
Sirius was taken aback, eyes widening in shock. Had she not wanted him to? He drew his hand back.
Sirius heard her loud and clear the first time, but the only response he could muster was a soft “huh?”
She averted her eyes back towards her hands and repeated herself even quieter than before. She really wanted him to say it was because he liked her. She had been in love with Sirius for what felt like forever.
Sirius wanted to tell her it was because he had wanted to for years, but his head told him that was a bad idea. She probably didn’t like it, or him.
He started racking his brain for an excuse. His hands were cold? No, he distinctly remembered how sweaty they were when his hand grabbed her.
He didn’t want to lose her in the crowd? No, that wouldn’t work either. He had had his arm around her the whole time.
He was trying to make someone jealous? That could work, he thought. He tried to remember anyone he had seen at Hogsmeade that day, but had been too focused on Y/n to notice anyone else.
Marlene! He remembered her winking at him when she saw the couple’s hands linked together.
“I was just trying to make Marlene jealous,” he shrugged nonchalantly, pulling his arm that was around her shoulder back beside him.
He was too focused on keeping his cool demeanor to notice the disappointment on Y/n’s face.
“Oh,” was all she could respond to him with.
“Yep,” he folded his arms in front of him, hoping she couldn’t see through his act.
They sat in an uncharacteristically awkward silence for what felt like forever, before Y/n started to stand and head back to her room.
“Goodnight,” she uttered, not daring to look back at him, too afraid of how she might react.
“Night,” he watched her figure trudge up the stairs to her dorm. He couldn’t help the song of hurt he felt in his chest while watching her walk away from him.
Although Sirius was upset that things didn’t go the way he had planned, he was content with the lie he had come up with on the spot. He layed back on the couch and thought about what could have happened if she felt the same way.
As Y/n entered her dorm, she was glad to see that everyone was already asleep. That way nobody would be able to see her cry.
———————————————————————
The next day, Y/n woke up feeling a little bit better than she had the previous night. She had decided, despite her sadness, to be happy for Sirius. She knew Marlene had, at one point, had feelings for him, and she just wanted him to be happy. She had made the decision to try and help set the two up together.
She made sure to get to the Great Hall before Marlene. As she approached the table, Lily sent her a knowing smile, having probably been told by James about the ‘date’. Her smile turned into a look of confusion when Y/n sat down beside her in Marlene’s seat, and not in her usual seat beside Sirius. She tried her best to steer clear of Sirius’ worried glances.
Sirius tried not to seem hurt by it, but it was killing him. He didn’t mean to make her that uncomfortable, he just wanted to hold her hand. However, he knew Y/n. And his Y/n wouldn’t avoid him over something so silly. When Marlene sat beside him and she gave him a thumbs up, he became even more clueless.
The whole day seemed to go by the exact way breakfast had. Any time Sirius tried to talk to Y/n, she would try and involve Marlene in some way. It was really getting on Sirius’ nerves, but he tried to be polite. And Sirius’ way of being polite was flirting.
Y/n didn’t know how much longer she could take seeing Sirius and Marlene fawning over each other. On one hand, she wanted the pair to get together. On the other, she would be content with never seeing the two in the same room again.
She didn’t like the way jealousy made her feel.
She figured that it was only stopping the two from getting together. Y/n felt as if she was intruding on their soon to be relationship, so she decided to lay low until they started seeing each other.
———————————————————————
Sirius was absolutely miserable. He hadn’t hung out with Y/n for an entire week. He didn’t want to leave his bed. He was so angry with himself for messing up their friendship with his feelings.
“Get up, Pads,” James grumbled for the third time that morning.
“Uh uh,” Sirius pulled his pillow out from under his head and placed it over his face.
“Sirius, get up,” James trudged over, yanking the cover off of the boy.
“Don’t wanna,” Sirius whined.
“Well, that’s too bad,” James yanked his arm, trying to pull him out of the bed.
“Leave me here to die,” Sirius whined in his pillow.
“We’d love to, but you’d stink up the room,” Remus huffed, joining James beside Sirius’ bed.
“Look buddy, it’s not the end of the world. When Lily–”
“Lily doesn’t like you either,” Sirius droned.
“He’s got a point,” Peter chimed in.
James glared at them both, then continued.
“All I’m saying is the Sirius I know would get out of bed and go confront his girl.”
“Well when you find him, I’d love to talk to him,” Sirius’ voice was muffled by the pillow he had once again thrown over his face.
“I give up.”
Across the hall, the exact same scenario was playing out in the girls’ dorm.
“You need to get up,” Lily coaxed, stroking Y/n’s hair as she laid her head in Lily’s lap.
“I can’t see him yet Lily,” Y/n turned her head to look up at her. Lily has never seen a more pitiful look in her entire life. When Y/n jutted out her bottom and looked as though she was going to start crying again, Lily pulled her closer.
“Oh, Y/n” she cooed, trying her hardest to be supportive.
“Why doesn’t he like me?” she cried into her friend’s leg. All of her pent up emotions finally breaking out. Lily didn’t mind, she understood what her friend was going through. She only wished she could help more.
“Cause he’s a twat,” she spoke softly, causing Y/n to giggle.
“Yeah,” she sighed fondly.
“You are far too smitten for that boy,” Lily shook her head.
“I know,” she frowned.
They settled into a comfortable silence. When Y/n’s sobs turned into small sniffles, Lily smiled down at the girl.
“He does like you.”
Y/n wanted to believe her, but she couldn’t. She sat up across from Lily and rubbed her eyes.
“That’s enough about Sirius. I heard you and James–”
“No way,” Lily shook her head.
“Oh come on.”
———————————————————————
Y/n had just returned from a walk through the castle to clear her head when she heard whispering from behind the staircase. She tried to ignore it, but felt too compelled to eavesdrop when she realized who the voices belonged to.
“She’s setting us up?” Sirius grimaced. “Why would she do a thing like that?” When Marlene glared at him, he threw in a quick “No offense!”
“Yes, you tosser. That’s why she’s been avoiding you.” Marlene crosses her arms over her chest. “Do you need me to explain it to you for a fourth time?”
“I still don’t get it,” Sirius started, focusing on the wall behind Marlene’s head. Before he could finish, Marlene decided she had had enough.
“She’s in love with you, you git!”
Sirius’ eyes widened, finally understanding what Marlene meant.
“I don’t understand why, but she is. And you really hurt her feelings when you said you were trying to make me jealous.” she elaborated, shoving his shoulder with her palm.
Sirius’ mouth opened and closed several times before Marlene decided to leave him alone to his thoughts.
As she made her way up the stairs, she looked back at the helpless boy. “You love her too, don’t you?”
Sirius blushed and averted his eyes back towards his shoes. Marlene had never seen him so bashful.
“You’re both hopeless,” she rolled her eyes, continuing up the stairs and into her dorm.
After hearing everything Marlene had told him, Sirius figured he should sit down.
Y/n watched from across the room as Sirius sat with his head in his hands and contemplated whether or not to approach him. She was elated to find out Sirius felt the same way, but felt bad for listening in on a private conversation of his.
She was suddenly overcome with a feeling that had her marching right up to Sirius and tapping him on the shoulder.
Startled, he jumped up and instantly relaxed when he saw just who it was in front of him.
“Love, I need to tell you something. I– what are you doing?”
Y/n reached her arms up to wrap around his broad shoulders, fiddling with the hairs at the nape of his neck.
“I love you,” she whispered, looking directly into his eyes. Sirius’ face contorted in shock, but quickly relaxed as he realized that her lips were now on his.
He melted into the kiss. He softly placed his hands on her face and deepened the kiss. They both smiled into it, content to finally be in each other’s embrace. Sirius pulled away and placed his forehead on hers.
“I love you,” he whispered back, kissing her lightly on the nose. When she scrunched her nose and beamed up at him, he swore she had never looked more beautiful.
He picked her and and spun her around, peppering kisses all over her face, causing her to giggle. “I love you!” he yelled a lot louder than Y/n would have liked.
She was quick to shush him, placing a finger over his lips. He smirked and kissed it. “I’ve waited too long to say that, I will not hush.”
Y/n rolled her eyes, wrapping her arms around his waist and laying her head against his chest. Sirius rested his head on top of her’s and began to sway. The pair couldn’t tell how long they stayed like that. It could’ve been hours, or seconds. All that mattered was the fact that they were finally together. For real this time.
“I’m really sorry,” Sirius whispered into her hair. “I don’t like Marlene.”
“So I’ve heard,” Y/n looked up at him and smiled. “It’s okay, I overreacted.”
“I guess we both did,” Sirius chuckled.
“James told me you were miserable,” Y/n smirked.
“Pft, I was perfectly fine,” Sirius rolled his eyes dramatically, before leaning in towards her ear. “I’ve never felt worse in my entire life.” he slowly kissed the side of her head.
Y/n cooed at the boy, and pulled him in tighter, rubbing his back.
“So, about that date…”

~Master list-
Remus was exhausted. Another full moon a few days ago wore the boy down. His body ached and all he wanted to do was relax and stop moving and making his newest scars hurt more. Remus knew after a full moon as restless as the last one, there was only one thing that would make him feel better.
You.
You’ve been dating for a little over a year now and knew all about Remus’ lycanthropy. You wanted to help him any way you could, offering to become an Animagus just to protect Remus, but Remus refused to allow you to do that, not wanting you to even get the chance to be hurt, much less by him. So instead you settled on middle ground. Whenever Remus needed it, full moon or not, you were always down for cuddles. It didn’t really seem much like middle ground considering the fact how much you both loved cuddling with each other and just being in each other’s arms. You’d always run your fingers through Remus’ fluffy hair, gently scrapping your nails against his scalp as he held you close to his chest. There was no doubt in his mind that it was his favorite part of the day.
He packed up all his books and papers in the library, his work long forgotten since you had been on his mind for the last 20 minutes. His friends knew the look in his eyes as they watched him gather his things, bidding them goodbye before he was gone. His first stop was the Gryffindor common room, assuming you were probably with Lily.
“Evans!” Remus called out to the red head as she started to make her way upstairs. Lily turned around, sharing a smile with her friend. “Is Y/N up there?”
Lily shook her head at his question. “No? She ran out almost an hour ago, looking for too giddy for her normal self so I figured she was looking for you, ready for your cuddles.” She giggled softly, remembering the way you skipped out of the common room. Her giggles ceased when she realized Remus was your destination. “What she didn’t go to you?”
Remus furrowed his brows and put his hands on his hips. “No, I haven’t seen her since last lessons.”
“Want me to help look for her?” Lily offered but Remus turned her down.
“It’s fine, I’m sure she just went for a walk.” Remus hid a whimper as Lily patted his shoulder in good luck before she finished her voyage upstairs. As soon as she was gone, Remus went up to his room and threw his things on his bed, pulling out the map his friend and he enchanted and started looking for your name. It didn’t take long before he found you, your name floating in the astronomy tower next to some kid name Jordan Adams. “Jordan Adams?” Remus whispered to himself as he tried to think of who this kid was and why his girlfriend was so ‘giddy’ to see him.
Remus didn’t know much about him, knowing he was a Gryffindor in the same year as you and him and vaguely remember you complaining about being partners with him last year on a project in Transformation. A project Adams used as an opportunity to repeatedly ask you out. Sure, this was before you and Remus were dating, but what were you doing with him now?
Remus didn’t waste anytime to head to the top of the tower, the pathway thankfully secluded before he reached the top. But then he saw the last thing he ever wanted to see.
You and this Adams kid lip locked, no space between you as his arm was thrown around your waist.
“Y/N?” Remus’ shattered voice caused you and Jordan to separate, your head snapping around to look at Remus. Jordan’s eyes went wide, wiping your smeared lipstick off his lips which only made Remus more upset. “What the hell is this? You’re cheating on me?” He blurted out, watching you stand up and head his way. He didn’t want to look at you, your calm expression making him sick to his stomach. With everything you and Remus went through he never thought you’d cheat on him.
“Remus, I love him.”
And just like that the anger disappeared from Remus’ body, replaced with a numbness as he stared at you. “W-what?”
“I love him.” You repeated, looking back at Jordan with a smile once only reserved for Remus. You loved him? You loved him? You were the only person Remus ever said those words too, and for you it was the same. But now you just said those words about a completely different boy. “We’re over Remus. I don’t want you anymore. Jordan’s my boyfriend now.” You batted your eyelashes at Remus as if you hadn’t just ripped out his heart and stomped it into the ground.
“I-I don’t understand. What happened- Why are you”
You let out a loud annoyed groan, rolling your eyes at Remus before grabbing Jordan’s hand. “Don’t let this be harder than it has to be. I just realized Jordan’s perfect for me. I mean isn’t he just dreamy?” You clutched onto his arm, fawning over the boy before turning his head to land a sloppy kiss on his mouth.
Remus had seen enough. He ran out of the tower, right out of the school and straight into the forbidden forest. His eyes were prodding with tears he finally let fall as he dropped to the ground, slamming his fist onto the forest floor and screaming out his pain. He’s been in physical pain before during and after a transformation, emotional too, like experiencing his parent’s reactions after he was infected, but in this moment all he could feel was the way he couldn’t breathe. His throat closed up as he sobbed in the woods, his walls breaking as the image of you pulling Adams’ face to yours played on repeat in his brain.
His heart was broken, and he couldn’t handle it.
A first year Hufflepuff saw Remus run into the woods, the cries of the much older boy catching his attention before he disappeared in the tree line. He was the one who told James, Sirius, and Peter where the fourth member of their friend group was. The boys took off immediately to find Remus, unsure of what happened in the last hour since they watched him leave the library.
Remus was no longer crying when his friends found him a while later, deep in the forest and propped up against a tree. His cheeks were wet, and all emotion was drained from his face when the boys stopped. “Moony? Moony, mate, are you okay?” James whispered softly as he and Sirius squatted on both sides of him, sharing concerned looks when Remus showed no sign of a response.
“Remus?” Sirius tried this time, putting a hand on the boy’s shoulder. Remus’ head slowly turned to look at him, his eyes bloodshot and looking as if he just realized he had company. Sirius hesitated momentarily before standing up, grabbing Remus’ arm and gently pulling him to his feet. “Let’s get you out of here.” He spoke in a quiet tone, worried the raise in voice wouldn’t be good. Remus allowed the three of them to bring him to his room, trying to pass the common room as quickly as possible to hide Remus’ condition from the rest of the school.
They placed him on his bed, Remus curled into his covers and brought his pillow against his chest, holding it much like he would hold you. The boys didn’t leave him, each of them climbing onto the bed, making sure not to disturb Remus’ position. “Are we going to talk about it?” Sirius asked, unsure how to directly address this. James, the only other person in their foursome with a girlfriend, knew what ever was going on with Remus was related to you. No one break downs like this unless it was over someone they love.
“Take your time, Moony. We’re here when you need to talk.” James said as he patted Remus’ arm, feeling the boy stiffen under his touch before a quiet sob went through his body and his eyes clasped shut.
“She cheated on me.”
They were sure they misheard him. There was no way you, who they knew love Remus more than anyone else, would cheat on him. “Remus-“
“I caught her kissing Jordan Adams! She said she loved him!” He cried out, wetting the pillow when he held it against his face. He wasn’t embarrassed to cry in front them, they were practically his brothers. He was embarrassed that he imagined a future with you, you who just broke his heart and only made Remus believe more that no one could ever love a monster like him.
Remus cried for more hours than he’d like to admit, his friends staying by his side until he ran out of tears. Lily stopped by earlier as well, confused as to why she just saw her best friend with someone who most definitely wasn’t her boyfriend.
They took shifts once dinner started, Peter watching over Remus while Sirius and James got something to eat, hurrying up in order to get back to Remus. The first thing they saw when they entered the great hall though was you, clinging onto Adam’s arm much like you had when you were in front of Remus. If they didn’t believe Remus earlier, they definitely would’ve now. They shot you a glare as they walked by, choosing to sit at the other side of the Gryffindor table. They spoke in hushed voices, refusing to look at you as Lily rushed to the table.
“We have a problem.” She told the two boys, sitting in the spot next to her boyfriend.
“Yeah, Miss liar over there.” Sirius grumbled, nudging his head in your direction before stabbing the food on his plate.
“Exactly.” She placed a box of chocolate on the table, picking out a piece and holding it up. “James, take a good sniff and tell me what you smell.”
James raised a brow at her, confused what she was getting at as Lily shot him a look and he complied, taking a deep sniff of the chocolate in her hand. “I can’t smell anything, your perfume’s too strong. Are you wearing the whole bottle?” He asked, taking another whiff and mentally enjoying the smell of Lily wearing the perfume he bought her at Hogsmeade.
“I’m not wearing any perfume today! That’s my point!” She exclaimed, only making James jump before both boys waited for her to explain. “When I smell this, all I can smell is your shampoo.” James flushed red as Lily put the candy back in the box, wiping the slightly melted chocolate of her hand and onto her napkin.
“What are you getting at Lils?” Sirius asked, shoveling another bite of his food into his mouth.
“I found this box on Y/N’s bed this afternoon. She only ate a few pieces before leaving.”
“So?” James scoffed, annoyed at the mention of you.
“So? How daft are you?!” Neither boy said anything, still very confused as to what Lily was trying to point out. She groaned, throwing her hands into the air. “It’s a love potion! Adams gave Y/N a love potion!”
Both boys’ face dropped, pieces of the puzzle slowly falling together. “She’s under a spell?” Lily nodded slowly. “She’s not really in love with him?”
“Are you kidding? Look at them.” They looked down the table, seeing you grabbing onto Adams’ arm and staring adorningly at him, but Adams wouldn’t look at you. Instead he was completely focused on his friends, you were just arm candy, but didn’t seem to mind. “Does that look like love?”
Sirius shook his head in disbelief, thinking about Remus sitting in their room believing you no longer loved him. “Should we tell Remus?”
“No. Not until the potion’s worn off.” Lily shook her head at them.
“How long will that be?”
“A day? At least.” She muttered, trying to recall what she learned in Slughorn’s class. “It’s already been over half that.”
James scowled. “Moony is going to kill Adams.”
“Not unless Y/N does first.”
“What if Adams gives her a second dose before the first wears off?” Lily reminded them as they fell silent. If Adams gave you a second dose before the first wears off then it’s at least another day before you return to your old self.
“What if we get her away from him?” Sirius suggested and went over plans in his head.
“You mean kidnap her?”
“What? No!” Sirius denied James view as James shrugged. “I mean, what if Lily distracts her until she’s back, that way Adams can’t get his grubby hands on her.”
“That could work.” James agreed, turning to Lily. “Could you do that?”
“I think I’m more than capable of getting my best friend to spend time in her room.” The task was easier said than done.
By school rules, you had to sleep in your own bed and Lily thanked every star in the sky that Adams hadn’t pulled something with you being spelled and made you return to your room. You went on for a while talking nonstop about Jordan. It was infuriating for Lily to listen to. She usually didn’t mind hearing about your love life, both of you love sharing with each other before going to sleep, but that was when you were talking about Remus, not some boy who decided to sneak you a love potion.
“Y/N!” Lily groaned, slapping her hand against her pillow and looking over at you in the dark. “Just go to sleep!”
“But we always-“
“Not tonight. Let’s just go to sleep.” She didn’t hear any response from you, sighing in content as she figured you listened to her. She let her eyes close, thankful for the silence as she fell asleep.
She barely got a few hours of sleep before hearing you whisper her name. “Lily?” she grunted, rolling onto her back and rubbing her eyes.
“What?”
“I need to see him.”
She sighed deeply and pulled the blanket tighter against herself. “You can see Adams in the morning. Go back to sleep.”
“No Lily. I need see Remus.” Her eyes snap wide, realizing how your words echoed with tears. She was out of her bed quickly and lighting the room, seeing you perched on your bed with tears in your eyes.
“The potion wore off?” She ask as you nodded, hanging your head low. “Adams must’ve messed up somehow…” She mumbled, letting out a breath of relief before launching herself onto your bed, wrapping her arms around your neck. “Oh, I’m so glad you’re back.”
You hugged her back tight, burying your head into her neck. “Lily I messed up!”
“Why’d you eat the chocolate?!” She yelled at you, separating and pushing the hair out of your tears.
“I thought they were from Remus! They smelt just like him, I thought-“ you stopped yourself, realizing how stupid you were. Lily scrambled out of your bed, jotting something down on a paper. She handed it to your owl and let him out of his cage.
“Take this to Remus.” She told the owl before he flew away.
“He isn’t going to want to see me.” You tried to tell her, but she didn’t listen as she pulled you off your bed and dragged you down to the common room. Remus woke up to the sound of your owl on the window catching his attention, his sniffling filling the room as he wiped his eyes. He furrowed his brows, looking over his still sleeping friends before shuffling out of bed and opening the window. Your owl dropped the message in his hand. His eyes darted over Lily’s vague words.
Common Room. Now.
He didn’t want to go, but if Lily was telling him to, he knew better than to ignore her. He tossed the paper on his bedside, glancing into the mirror to see the mess he looked like before shaking off the vision and heading downstairs.
“Lily?” He called out as he finished the steps, looking around the room before his eyes landed on you, your gaze casted onto the fire as you sat curled up in front of it. “Y/N.” You turned to look at him, looking just as distraught as he did.
“Rem.” You whispered, fresh tears falling down your face at the sight of him. You stood up, taking a step towards Remus as he tried and fail to hide how much he was hurting as he started back up the stairs. “Remus wait!”
“Why?” He spat, his eyes glaring into yours with a fire you’ve never seen before. “I don’t want to hear it. Whatever you have to say, go tell Adams.”
“I don’t love Adams! I don’t even like him!”
“Oh, really? Cause it sure didn’t look that way earlier when your tongue was down his throat!
“I love you!” You screamed at him, sure that every Gryffindor, even the sleeping ones, could hear you. Remus didn’t say anything, watching as you closed your eyes, falling onto the couch behind you. Your voice was softer now, so scared of losing Remus as you looked at him from across the room. “I love you Remus. I’ve always loved you. Adams left chocolate on my bed, I thought they were from you. I didn’t know there was a love potion in them.”
Remus bit his tongue, watching you hug yourself tight shaking your head as your tears hit the carpet. “Why should I believe anything you’re saying right now?”
You shrugged, feeling so defeated. “Because I do love you Remus. It was a love potion; you must believe that. I don’t love anyone but you.” Your voice cracked as Remus broke, slowly making his way over to the couch with you. He didn’t look at you as he sat down and you nodded, reaching over to cup his cheek to get him to look at you. His watery eyes met yours, his breath caught in his throat as your fingers danced over his skin. “For as long as you’ll have me, I’m yours. I promise.” Remus stayed quiet, leaning his forehead against yours.
It was a love potion. He thought. It wasn’t her. She still loves me. She always loved me.
You were about to pull away and grant Remus the space he probably wanted. You knew how upset you’d be if the shoe was on the other foot, but Remus didn’t let you pull away. His lips connected with yours, a kiss much different than the ones Adams stole from you. More tears streamed down your cheeks, wiped away as Remus brought a hand up.
“I believe you.” he whispered, brushing his thumb back and forth across your cheek. You smiled, licking your lips as you fell into his embrace, your body fitting against his perfectly. Remus sighed, letting out a shaky breath when he held you into him. “I love you.” he whispered into your ear, feeling you say it back as your breath tickled his neck. You were both exhausted, the sun not coming up for another or so as Remus laid down on the couch, you still in his embrace laying next to him as you let your hand move into his hair, playing with his curls.
“I’m gonna kill Adams.” You mumbled as Remus raised a brow, nodding his head.
“I’ll help.” You chuckled at him, feeling his laugh rumble in his chest as he pulled you closer to him. It didn’t take long before both you and Remus fell asleep together, your tears long gone. Lily found you an hour later have come down to check on you before seeing you and Remus finally cuddled together. She smiled, leaving you and your boyfriend to get some much-needed rest, vowing to never let you eat random chocolate you find on your bed again. Even if it does smell like your boyfriend.
A/N: Thoughts? 😊 Hope this was what you were hoping for Anon!

A Jily wedding | Wolfstar
Summary: Slices of life leading up to Jily’s wedding
Pairing: Sirius Black x Remus Lupin / James Potter x Lily Evans
Word count: 2589
-
James, Sirius and Peter sat at a table at the Leaky Cauldron, drinking beers and celebrating James' last days as an unmarried man.
''I can't believe you're getting married. Married!''
James rolled his eyes and finished the last of his beer. ''Shut up, Pads.''
''I mean, who would've thought you'd end up marrying Evans. All those years of trying and failing to get her on a date finally gave something.''
On the other side of the table, Peter snickered, remembering how desperate James had always been for her during their years at Hogwarts. Someone will without a fail mention it during their speech at the wedding. There were so many good stories about James Potter's grand flirting techniques - and failures -, it would be a shame to not share some with their guests.
''Moony, where are our beers?'' James called out to him.
''Coming!'' he replied from the bar, only now receiving the tall glasses. ''You're getting the next round,'' he told Peter when he sat down.
Sirius wrapped an arm around his shoulders and toasted to James - again.
''I don't get it. How can you be so calm about this? You're getting fucking married in twelve days, Prongs!''
The closer they were to their wedding day, the less nervous James was - unlike Lily who was a nervous wreck, planning everything with his mother. Sometimes, she'd ask his opinion on things like cake toppers or flowers, but James always told her the same thing: I don't care, do what you please. To some, it could pass like he was behaving like an ass, but he truly didn't care whether there were white or blue or yellow flowers on the table-centers. To him, all that mattered was that his beautiful fiancé would become his wife at the end of the ceremony. That Lily Evans would become Lily Potter. The rest...was just confetti.
.
''Is Petunia coming?''
Remus Lupin knew nothing about weddings, but, unlike the other marauders, he was helpful. He had come to the Potters' to help Lily with some last minute preparations like the final seating chart and making sure everything was in order for next week - and she couldn't be more thankful.
Lily looked down. ''No. She...she isn't,'' she replied, feeling her eyes welled with tears.
Remus pursed his lips into a thin line, now regretting asking. ''I'm sorry.''
''She made her choice a long time ago. I don't know why I ever thought for a second that she'd send a positive RSVP...''
''She's your sister. You're allowed to be upset.''
''I thought she could make an exception for one day, for my big day, and put her hatred against the wizarding world aside, but I guess not.''
Family was a difficult subject for Lily Evans. Mainly her relationship with her sister, Petunia. They used to be very close, but her witch abilities put a strain between and their relationship had kept deteriorating until they became completely distant.
Two years ago, Lily - alongside James - had attended Petunia and Vernon's wedding. Although they hadn't talked the whole night, Lily saw this as a step into rekindling their relationship, but Petunia had proven wrong when she didn't return the favor and checked the RSVP as 'no' for Lily's wedding.
''My parents cannot make it to my wedding either. It's so sad to think that on my big day I won't have any family there to see me walk down the aisle. I don't even have someone to give me away to James-'' She pushed her face in her hands, more upset than she let on.
Remus' heart broke at the sight of a crying Lily, five days before her wedding. She didn't deserve this. She deserved a beautiful wedding with all of her loved ones in the attendance. A wedding filled with love and happiness.
He squeezed her forearm. ''You have me. I can be your family for one day.''
At Hogwarts, she and Remus had become best friends - much to James' jealousy. Their friendship wasn't to the marauders' level, but they were very close - thanks to being both prefects, and studying and potion partners.
If James were there, he'd add that they were both bookworms too.
Lily raised her head, the couple tears she had let slip now visible. ''You'd do that?''
Remus nodded. Yeah, he'd do that.
.
This morning, a letter had arrived from Madam Malkin announcing that their robes were finished being crafted and that the boys could come in and try them on in the afternoon.
The accent color of the wedding was a rich purple-y red color which somehow suited everyone. When Madam Malkin revealed the robes to the marauders, they were pleasantly surprised and excited to try them on.
Everyone's robes were different while being cohesive, just like their personalities. The base of the outfit was simple: white shirt and black trousers - except for Peter who was the ring bearer. James, as the groom, had a cloak, a vest - matching with his best man - and a bow tie. Instead of a bow tie, Sirius and Remus had matching ties. Remus also had suspenders instead of a vest because Lily prefered that for him - and, according to Sirius, he looked fine.
''How do I look?'' James asked, standing in front of the floor length mirror and perfecting the cloak over his shoulders.
''It looks nice. But, won't you get hot in this?'' Peter replied, slouched in one of the chairs, munching on some snacks and leaving crumbs on his nice dress shirt.
''Probably. I'm only wearing the cloak for the ceremony, though. Padfoot? Moony, what do you thi-'' James turned around and groaned, seeing the two kissing in the corner. ''Bloody hell, can you two not suck faces for ten minutes?''
At James' voice, Remus pulled away and looked down, sheepish. ''Sorry.'' His lips were slightly red and a piece of his hair was sticking up at the back.
Sirius, on the other hand, was unbothered and still staring at Remus as if he was some bone to munch on. ''If Evans hadn't put Moony in bloody suspenders and fit trousers, it wouldn't be an issue,'' he defended, taking a seat beside Peter. ''Have you seen his ass-''
''I don't want to hear it!'' James interrupted before Sirius could finish, raising his hands to cover his ears like a child.
Madam Malkin appeared in the fitting area. ''Everything alright here? I heard screaming.''
''All good, Madam Malkin,'' Remus replied politely with a small smile, hoping she hadn't noticed his burning cheeks.
Sirius looked smug and Peter was snickering in his seat, amused by the situation.
''If one of you tears or stain anything before the wedding, you'll be paying for the repairs,'' James warned them - Peter included.
.
One week before the wedding, James did the unthinkable and walked in on Lily trying on her dress. It wasn't intentional - he didn't even know she was home -, but Mrs. Potter had shooed him out of the room quickly, screaming that it was bad luck to see the bride in her dress before the wedding.
''I didn't even see the dress!'' he promised from the other side of the door. ''But, just so you know, I'd still marry you if you were wearing a pillow case.''
Lily had laughed. She was going to marry that idiot. ''And you better have a dress robes when I see you at the altar, Potter.''
.
''So...who's next?''
''Next what?'' Remus asked, confused.
''Who's the next marauder to tie the knot?''
''Well, Peter. But I suggest you take a seat because that's not happening for a long time. Have you seen him flirt with Dorcas? He can't even pick up that she isn't interested in boys!''
They both bursted laughing.
''It must be you, then.''
Remus choked on his tea, almost spittering it all on himself. ''You know Sirius and I can't get married, Evans.''
''Not now, obviously.''
''Even if we could, marriage isn't Sirius and I's deal. We love each other very much, but have no intention on getting married - ever.''
Although it could sound nice to call Sirius his husband, Sirius' view on marriage had been heavily tainted because of his family and blood purity obsession. In the Noble House of Black, you didn't marry out of love, but to keep the bloodline pure. Toujour pur.
A few years ago, his parents had even tried to force him into marrying his cousin, Narcissa. Sirius had found it morally disgusting and was very thankful when Narcissa married Lucius Malfoy.
''He might changed his mind for you.''
.
''How was your afternoon with Lily? Has she gone all bridezilla yet?'' Sirius asked when he heard the door of his and Remus' shared flat open and close.
Remus chuckled as he removed his boots. ''Surprisingly, no. She'd have all the reasons to, though. She received some last minute RSVPs and has nowhere to place them on the seating chart, the florists got the wrong colors for the arrangements and the Ceremony Official mixed up his dates and Lily and James' date isn't available anymore,'' he explained. ''If I were her, I'd be crying on the floor - but don't tell her that.''
Sirius laughed and went around the counter to greet Remus properly, abandoning the sandwich he was making himself. ''Your secret's safe with me, love.'' He kissed Remus who scrunched his nose, smelling a mix of exhaust and leather on his boyfriend.
''You've taken out the motorcycle?''
''Yeah. I went on a ride with Prongs. We came up with a genius idea to drive him to the altar on my motorcycle, but there's very small chances Lily will let us.''
''With reason.''
Much like Remus, Lily wasn't a fan of that motorcycle. Motorcycles itself were dangerous and had a high risk of fatalities, but Sirius' was huge and fast and could fly, which made it ten times more dangerous. Plus, James and Sirius were very reckless on that motorcycle and had once been chased by muggle authorities.
.
The ceremony went on smoothly - if you don't count Peter almost dropping the rings. James had shed a few tears when he saw Lily in her white dress and Lily didn't forget her vows, which she had been nervous about. Her memory wasn't the best under stress.
After saying 'I do', everyone had moved to the magically enlarged ball room for the reception. As expected, the place was beautiful. Rich purple-y red and white flower arrangements, chic drapes, floating lights and a massive cake.
Like expected, Sirius had filled his best man speech with embarrassing anecdotes of the couple - mainly on James' end. He did tease a bit Lily too - otherwise it wouldn't have been fair -, but he was harder on James, as expected. The guests had laughed and James was embarrassed, which was all Sirius wanted.
''You just wait for payback on your wedding day, Padfoot,'' James threatened as they shared a shoulder hug.
.
Lily might not have gone all bridezilla on her wedding planning, but she insisted on handing her guests a list of rules for the night. There weren't too many and they were simple and basic. No pranks. No gorging yourselves at the buffet table. No exhibitionism. No drunken speeches. No getting so wasted you can't walk. No white for the women attending.
Some were specifically hinted toward one or more people, but she figured that all their guests could use those rules.
Lily had joined Remus at a table as the guests danced to rest her sore feet. She had charmed her shoes before putting them on so they wouldn't hurt her feet from wearing them all night, but the charm must've worn out by now.
''Mrs. Potter,'' Remus greeted, nodding his head.
The redhead chuckled and took a sip of her champagne. ''That's me.''
''You look beautiful, Lily. Radiant.''
''I can't believe I'm married, Remus. Married! This is insane.'' She smiled and took another sip.
A few feet from them, Sirius' shirt was halfway unbuttoned and his tie was undone as he danced with James, a drink in his left hand. His hair was pulled into a messy half-up, too hot to let them down fully, and Remus watched with discouragement and endearment. They looked ridiculous.
''Seeing this makes me regret what I just willingly signed up for.''
Remus laughed. ''Worry not, we're in this together.''
''They look like idiots.''
They laughed and James held on to Sirius who's drink tilted and almost made a mess. Sirius brought it up to his lips and kept on dancing with his best friend.
''You think Sirius will make it till the end of the night? How many drinks has he had?''
At this moment, Sirius tripped on his own foot, making him vacillate and almost falling. More than he should've.
''I'll handle him,'' Remus assured.
.
When Remus decided it was enough, he pried Sirius from the room and led him to one of the couches in a secluded part of the ball room to - hopefully - sober up before going home.
Lily had offered them a sobering potion, but Remus had declined it, knowing Sirius would be annoyed and want to drink more after - which he really shouldn't if he doesn't want to get alcohol poisoning. It wasn't his first time dealing with a drunk Sirius - and he didn't really mind. He was easy enough to manage.
Sirius' head rested against the high armrest of the couch, sprawled like his bones had been replaced with jelly. Drunk and dazed, he reached out for his boyfriend and dragged him down with him, making Remus squeal in surprise.
Sirius took hold of his hand and brought it to his face and leaned into it as Remus sat on his lap.
''Where's your tie?'' Remus asked, not seeing the silky strip around his neck.
Sirius looked down and shrugged, only now noticing that it was in fact not there anymore. He shrugged, not caring much about the lost tie. It's not like he had planned to wear it again.
''You're very drunk.''
''And you're very pretty.'' Sirius wrapped his arms around Remus' neck and started kissing his jaw lovingly and drunkenly. ''I love you, Moony.''
In his last stage of drunkenness, Sirius Black was a needy and affectionate drunk - before blacking out, that is. Once he was past the goofing with James stage, he was the neediest person, wanting nothing else than to hug, cuddle and kiss everybody he knew - especially Remus.
He'd look around the room, searching for Remus just so he could wrap his arms around him and kiss his face and flirt with him. To love and be loved in return. It was all a drunk Sirius wanted - needed.
Remus tried to resist Sirius' kissing and pulled away, insisting on keeping his promise to Lily and following her wedding rules. He looked down at the raven haired wizard, seeing clearly how much of a mess he looked with pieces of hair were falling into his heavy eyes, a soft smile across his lips and the smooth skin of his chest on display from his half buttoned shirt.
''Shall we go home?'' Remus took a piece of Sirius' hair and twirled it around his fingers.
Sirius shook his head in protest, feeling the effects of alcohol dissipate a little. ''Wanna stay a little more,'' he said...only to change his mind less than a minute later, which made Remus laugh.
''Let's go say goodbye to the newlyweds, first.'' Remus helped him get up from the couch and walked back to the party area.

To The Top || A Marauders Band AU
Chapter Two: You Gotta Not
Read here on A03
So Lily Evans brought a big asset to the band?
Only if you consider Remus Lupin to be a big asset, which I do.
Did Lily introduce them?
In time.
What happened in the meantime?
Before Remus joined the band there was just James, Sirius, and Frank. They lived together in this house called Maxwells house. It belonged to these twins Fabian and Gideon and they opened it up to anyone who needed a home.
And what was Remus doing? What were you doing?
I was in Germany at the time, Remus was at university. But he had been friends with Lily since they were young and even though he was staying in a student accommodation he wasn't too far away for their friendship to change in any way.
//
Lily and Remus had spent New Year's Eve together. One of Remus' classmates held a party which they attended and stayed until the clock struck midnight. By the time they had made it back to his accommodation, it was three in the morning. They had both slept in Remus' bed without bothering to change their clothes or even take their make-up off, which then lead to one of the worst mornings in both of their lives.
It was eight in the morning when Remus's phone went off. He groaned when he saw his twin brother's name appear on the screen and held the phone to his ear.
"Hello?"
"Re, where are you?"
"What do you mean?" he paused. "Am I supposed to be somewhere?"
He could practically feel Rom rolling his eyes. "You and Lily both promised Mum that you'd help with the fate. Remember? The fate? The one that Mum has been stressing over for weeks?"
Shit.
"Ohhh yeah, yeah I completely remember god who do you take me for? Yeah me and Lils are on our way now, well be like five minutes tops I promise." and with that, he quickly hung up.
Shit Shit Shit Shit.
"Lily come on, we have to go," Remus said quickly as he shook his best friend awake.
Lily only groaned as she lifted her head off the pillow, she watched Remus rush around the room to grab the makeup wipes and cleaned off the smudged eyeliner he still had on.
Lily didn't wait for an explanation, she just got out of the bed and found her way towards the nearest hairbrush.  It wasn't until they were waiting for the bus that Lily had asked where they were going.
"My mum's thing, remember? We said we would help."
Lily didn't look like she remembered but she nodded anyway.
"How long do you think we'll be?"
Remus shrugged, "No idea. Why? Got somewhere to be?"
Lily rolled her eyes, "Got a hangover to cure is more like it."
They had gotten to the fate twenty minutes later and immediately regretted not faking a sickness to get out of it.
Hope Lupin was a powerhouse and an amazing mum, she was loving and caring, and gentle. But she was a single mum who had raised three boys and was in the middle of raising another, which made her incredibly scary when she was stressed.
"There you two are!" she exclaimed when she saw Remus and Lily making their way down the field where the fate was being held. "I was about to send Petunia off after you guys, honestly why are you so late?"
Remus panicked, "Headache," he said.
Hope placed her hands to her hips and raised an eyebrow, "Is headache code for a hangover?"
They both nodded.
Hope sighed, "There's coke, bananas, and water in that tent over there. Go and tip half of the water out of a bottle, fill the rest with coke, drink that, and eat a banana. I don't have time for this." she told them, quickly adding, "Its a hangover remedy," after seeing their confused faces.
"Where was this remedy all the other times we've been hungover?" Lily asked, acting offended.
Hope shrugged, "You never asked."
"Still could've been useful."
"How am I supposed to know that you're hungover if you never tell me!?" Hope exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air and turning her back on them in order to do other things.
"You're Mum!" Remus yelled back. "You know everything!"
"Two minutes! Get a move on!" was all that Hope yelled back.
As Hope had promised the flat coke and bananas had helped their hangovers but unfortunately didn't make them any more prepared for the long day ahead of them. Remus' parents had divorced three years ago when Lyall had admitted that he had fallen for someone else. Remus doubts that his parents have ever been in love. They had his older brother, Lycus when they were in their twenties and before they were married. They did get married not long after he was born and three years after that they had Romulus and Remus, the twins also weren't planned. Neither was Macca, Remus' younger brother who was only 2 years old at the time of the divorce.
His father's new girlfriend didn't last very long and got intimidated by the fact that he had four sons. Romulus has always said that he was certain that there was no girl, to begin with, they had never met her and their dad wasn't exactly someone who had luck when it came to romance. Romulus swears that he made her up to use as an excuse to get a divorce. Lycus believes him. Remus doesn't.
Hope and Lyall still remained close friends and the boys are allowed to stay with either one of them as much as they like, but they spend the majority of their time with Hope, or at least Lycus, Romulus, and Remus do. Macca, who is now five, spends Monday to Thursday with Hope and Friday to Sunday with Lyall in hopes that he will grow up to have a close relationship with both parents.
Remus had nothing against his father, he was a good dad and never failed to make Remus feel loved. But he wasn't yet out to his dad yet and wasn't sure if it would go well if he did come out to him. He likes to think that his dad would try to be supportive but still doesn't want anything to change between them. Not only that but he preferred his mum's cooking.
Lyall worked as a teacher for a primary school near where he lived and Hope owned her own florist in town but would always pop into the other shops there to see if they needed any help when she had the time, which is what led to her helping out with the local coffee shops fate in order to help raise money for cancer research. This wasn't the first time Hope had dragged her children out of their usual routines to stand in a field in the middle of winter and most certainly won't be the last. But they always came, Remus would never admit it but he quite enjoyed these things. Hope had always wanted to help with certain school and church events and Remus was proud to have a mum who was so loved in the community, even if she was scary when she got into her boss mode.
By the time Remus had finished their drinks and properly woke up, there was already a crowd of people going around each stall, Remus had seen Romulus surrounded by little kids. He called them over when he saw them.
"Remus! Lily! You two are captains get over here!"
"Oh bloody hell," Remus said under his breath, noticing the football that he had in his hands.
Sirius felt like his figures were going to fall off. It was January 1st, who set up an outdoor event on January 1st.
They had only just got there and he already wanted to desperately go home, he didn't dream his parents irrelevant and leave his whole family behind at the age of 22 just to play in the freezing cold, but James had insisted that this would be worth it and he seemed so excited for every gig Sirius could never say no.
It was during their first set that Sirius had seen her.
She had been all that James had talked about since their gig at the pub on Christmas eve, he could recite her description by memory.
Dark red hair that reached her chest.
Emerald green eyes.
Plus size
A smile that glows.
Exactly a head smaller than James.
Two piercings in her ear lobe and one in her cartilage.
A tattoo of a small tattoo of a wolf behind her ear.
And she was wearing white Doc Martens.
Yep, that was her. It had to be, she ticked every box (apart from the tattoo as she was too far away for Sirius to get a proper look. But she looked like a girl that would have one.)
Sirius' heart leaped. James was going to be so excited, all he could talk about throughout Christmas was how much he regretted not asking for her Instagram. He had to tell him.
He was going to tell him.
He had it all planned. He was going to give James that smile that only James got, the one that said "I know something you don't know," James always got so excited at good news.
Then he was going to ask James once more how Lily Evans looked, and James would go on a ramble, giving out as much information about this girl that he could remember. Then he would spin James around and point her out and knowing James he would probably scream. Sirius couldn't wait, he was a hopeless romantic after all.
As they went through each song he couldn't take his eyes off her, he had to make sure that he knew where she was when he told James. And he was going to tell him, he was certain of it.
That is, he was certain of it until he saw him.
Now that's a sight that he will never be able to get out of his head.
Short blond curly hair.
Tall.
Thin, yet still had a bit of muscle.
Crooked nose.
Amber eyes.
And a large scar going across his face, from his right eye down through his nose and ending just before his lips.
God his lips!
As they played on Sirius began to notice more and more about this mystery boy. He seemed to be friendly with Lily, they were playing football with a group of kids and it was obvious that he was pretending to not be good for their sake. There was another boy with them who had similar features. Must be a brother, Sirius thought.
The boy was dressed in a Queen t-shirt, a white one with a long-sleeved black shirt underneath, and his jeans were ripped. He wore eyeliner, his nails were painted black and he had multiple rings on his figures.
Sirius had never been more turned on until he saw him take a five-minute break to smoke a cigarette.
Sirius could never date a smoker. James was enough trouble, Sirius had lost count on how many times he had told him that he ought to quit but he never listens. Smoking kills everyone knows this so why did some people think that by some miracle they could be the exception.
Sirius was about to give it all up then and there, make his eyes go back to following Lily around, or maybe even have his brain focus on what he was actually supposed to be going. But once the boy had put out his cigarette and rejoined the group of kids one of them had fallen over and hurt their knee. The boy crouched down to their level and talked to the boy until he laughed while Lily got a wet paper towel and a plaster.
Damit, Sirius thought. Why do guys with kids always have to be so damn attractive?
For the rest of their set, the only thing Sirius could see was him.
He had forgotten all about Lily Evans until they had finished. When they had gotten off the stage James had been bouncing up and down. His smile was the widest he had ever seen it.
"It's her," he said quickly.
"Whos her?" Frank asked, looking at the crowd confused.
"Her, her. That girl I met a the pub last week. She's here."
"Go talk to her then." And while you're at it get me her mate's number?
James began to pale, "I can't just go up and talk to her," he told them shaking his head. "What if she hates me?"
Frank raised an eyebrow, "Why would she hate you, I thought you hit it off?"
"We did!"
"So go talk to her!"
James looked at Lily and then back at Sirius and Frank. He had now started picking at his figure nails, slowly picking one off and throwing it onto the ground.
"What do I say?" He asked, desperately.
Frank seemed very confident. "Mate, you've just played for the entire day she surly noticed that it was you at one point. She's probably begging for you to go and talk to her."
James looked confused, "Then why hasn't she come up to me?" His eyes suddenly widened. "What if she really isn't interested? I mean I know I didn't ask for her Snapchat or anything but she didn't ask for mine either!" he said in one breath. Sirius was sure he may faint if he thought anymore.
Both James and Sirius looked at Frank who rolled his eyes. "She's the girl. You're supposed to be the one to ask her out and make the first move. Most girls are scared to ask out guys cause guys suck." He said it as if it was the most obvious thing ever. "Just take a deep breath, channel your confidence, and swipe her off her feet. You've got this."
James took a breath and nodded before making his way towards Lily who was having a conversation with a much taller boy. He looked a bit like Sirius' mystery boy but older, taller, and with darker hair and no scar. Maybe another brother.
Sirius and Frank both watched James approached Lily in silence. They watched him ask to talk to her, Sirius didn't miss the smile that appeared across her face. Unfortunately said smile began to slowly disappear once James began talking and before anyone could realize that this was indeed a bad idea, Lily had slapped James across the face and had begun to walk in the other direction.
James all but stomped back towards Sirius and Frank, his glasses had fallen to the tip of his nose and his face had gone nearly bright red, though Sirius couldn't tell if it was from anger or embarrassment.
He mumbled a "Let's go" and grabbed all of his belongings before making his way towards the van. All Sirius and Frank could do was stare at each other in disbelief.
"This is why we don't leave him alone unsupervised," Sirius mumbled.

A Two Week Trial Run
Casual sex wasn't something Lily Evans had. Ever.
She didn't judge those who chose to do so, but it just wasn't for her.
Or that’s what she had thought, anyway, because whoo, last night...
Last night had sure taught her to never say never, Lily mused, staring at the bloke beside her softly snoring in the mussed up bed.
He'd been funny and fit and charming when they'd met at the pub. Lily had appreciated the flirting; she'd had several drinks in her and had been feeling down and in a need of a pick-me-up.
And her girlfriends – Marlene especially – had egged her on until Lily had finally given in. Why the hell not? What did she have to lose?
So she'd left the pub with him, had some really good sex back at his place and fallen asleep.
It was only now in the harsh light of the morning and with her head pounding from the hangover that regret was starting to creep in.
Well, not regret exactly, Lily amended, watching the guy's face scrunch up in the most adorable way in his sleep.
More like a minor existential and/or identity crisis because Lily wasn't this person who got shit-faced and went home with a guy.
Except she’d proven herself wrong on all accounts last night.
Not only had she had a one night stand with a total stranger, she had also enjoyed every second of it – that she could remember at least.
These mental crises were not making Lily's head hurt any less so she pushed them aside.
Priorities: find her clothes, dress, find her handbag, dry-swallow a pain killer, sneak out, walk of shame.
Lily hadn't even got out of the bed when the door of the room suddenly banged open.
"Mate, you are not gonna believe – who the hell are you?"
Confused, Lily stared at the young man standing in the doorway wearing a band t-shirt and a disgruntled expression.
Briefly, Lily wondered if he had a hangover too because judging from that pale cast of his face and the hoarse voice he seemed to be doing just as poorly as Lily – if not worse.
The bang from the door being so rudely flung open had startled Lily's companion awake.
He was sitting up now, his black hair sticking up every which way as he groggily reached for his glasses from the bedside table.
"None of your damn business," Lily snapped, crossing her arms.
The man swung to glare at the yawning man next to Lily.
"What did or didn't you do to her, James? Being so cross first thing in the morning."
"Maybe she is cross because first thing in the morning because you decided to burst into the bloody room," James replied.
He slanted Lily a glance and offered a small, crooked smile.
"This is my flatmate, Sirius. He can be a bit of a prick so just feel free to ignore him."
“I wouldn’t recommend ignoring me,” Sirius immediately retorted. “Not until you hear me out.”
James sighed and flopped back, his head slapping against the pillow.
“What is it?”
“I got the results.”
“What?”
“The test I had to take, remember?” Sirius huffed. “I tested positive for the thing.”
James sat up again, his knuckles white where he clutched at the blanket.
“What? You what?”
Lily’s gaze flitted between the two men, the heavy feeling in her stomach having nothing to do with the nausea she’d been trying to ignore.
“What’s going on?” she asked, her voice faltering.
“Sirius has the virus,” was James’ grim answer.
“What?”
“I got orders to go into quarantine for at least two weeks,” Sirius continued. “And so should anyone who I may have exposed to the stupid thing so… Welcome to Chez Potter-Black, Miss None of your business.”
Beside her, James was cussing up a storm and pulling at his hair.
Lily crawled under the blanket.
Was this karma? she wondered. The universe agreeing that one night stands weren’t her thing and eagerly teaching her a lesson?
Whatever the reason behind the current mess of a situation, Lily didn’t like it one bit.
She pulled a pillow to cover her face. And screamed.
Tumblr media
Once the anger had gone, panic settled in.
James could understand it, he was feeling rather upset for the turn of the events himself and swamped with guilt at having dragged Lily to this mess. He probably shouldn’t have gone out to the pub last night, but he’d just been so sick of Sirius’ drama queen act and bitching that he’d had to get out.
And just because Sirius had been on the skiing trip in Austria with Remus recently didn’t have to mean anything. He certainly hadn’t been showing much of the symptoms the media kept talking about. The virus had felt like a distant thing; the test Sirius had been to little more than a formality to make sure everything was fine.
But now nothing was fine, James thought glumly, slumping against his headboard.
The only tiny glimmer of light in the current mess they’d found themselves in was that Lily was still here, and would remain here at his flat for the next two weeks.
It was a rotten thing to cling to, James was ready to admit that. But even so, he didn’t mind at all having her around.
He’d been so surprised that she had even agreed to come back to his place last night. He’d been halfway in love with her, cliché as that was, before they’d as much as crossed the threshold of his flat.
And those feelings hadn’t faded in the light of the day.
He sat, still in his bed and watched Lily as she paced his room. She made for a fascinating sight, and even with the pale, wan face and the mussed up hair she was so beautiful James’ heart ached. She was muttering to herself while she paced, and from the snatches James could hear, he understood she was comprising a to-do -list of some kind.
James was more of a spontaneous nature, so seeing someone come up with a plan so fast was super impressive.
Then, Lily stopped pacing and went to dig around in the handbag she’d had with her last night. She pulled out her phone and swore.
“Do you have a charger I can borrow? I need to ring a ton of people.”
“Of course.” James scrambled out of the bed. “And if it isn’t compatible with your phone you can use mine to ring as many people as you need.”
They found the charger, and soon enough Lily’s phone was charging.
The two of them sat back down on the bed, side by side, and looked out of the window to the grey London skies.
“I’m sorry,” James blurted out. “This isn’t how I thought this morning would go.”
“It’s okay,” Lily said. “I mean it’s not. It’s messed up. But I don’t think this is your fault.”
For a moment, they sat in silence.
James’ fingers itched to pull Lily close, but he didn’t want to presume or overstep. Just because they’d been together last night didn’t mean they were, well, together.
“So,” Lily said after a while, “out of curiosity, how did you think this morning would go?”
James swallowed. He buried his nervous fingers in his hair.
“Um. That, well… I was hoping to cook you a nice breakfast I guess. And get your number.”
James slanted Lily a glance and saw a wry smile twist her lips.
“A nice breakfast, huh? I suppose we can have that much at least. As soon as my stomach is settled and I sort this thing out a bit.”
“Sure, of course.” James met her eyes. “I promise I’ll do whatever I can so you’ll be as comfortable here as possible.”
Warmth flashed in her stormy green eyes. “Thank you.”
“Right.” James tugged at his hair. “I’m going to leave you to it. Give you some privacy so you can ring whomever. And get that breakfast started.”
James was already getting to his feet when Lily’s arms came around him.
He froze, his giddy heart leaping into his throat as he held her close for a much too short a moment.
But any moment with Lily in his arms was better than one without her, so he welcomed it, and the small glimmer of hope that sparked in his heart.
Tumblr media
Lily had called in sick to work. She’d got Marlene to bring over a bag with a bunch of clothes and other essentials. And she’d more or less settled in, awkward as it had been at first.
James had been wonderfully accommodating and had pretty much given his whole room for her to use. He wasn’t the issue.
Neither was his flatmate, Sirius. Despite their less than favourable first meeting, Lily was starting to slowly like Sirius, ridiculous as he was.  He didn’t appear to be all that sick, but he was milking it for all it was worth.
Having had a male best friend, many many years ago, Lily had personal experience with the whole man-flu thing. And it hadn’t taken Lily very long to realise that Sirius was all about the drama.
No, both blokes were kinda brilliant in their ways. The awkwardness of the first few days was mainly because of the minor identity crisis that still haunted Lily.
Besides, she just didn’t know how to feel about James, because, well… He seemed like a great guy but it was odd to have had shared such intimacy with someone she was only now starting to know.
And that’s why you don’t do one night stands, Lily chided herself while furiously kneading bread dough in James’ tiny kitchen.
The kitchen was barely bigger than a cupboard, but it had become a retreat for Lily. As long as she was in there, baking, the boys would leave her alone.
Much as Lily did love socialising with her friends, she was an introvert at heart.
And suddenly forced to share very limited living quarters with two strangers, one of which was ill and very extra and the other super fit and sweet and confusing and also utterly going stir-crazy though it was only their third day in, well…
Fun as the guys seemed, Lily needed some time for herself.
Baking had always been one of the ways she dealt with stress, and with two young men in the house, both in a possession of a bottomless stomach, it all worked out pretty well.
Lily had reached her inner zen and was just finishing shaping the loaf when the sound of James clearing his throat bought her back to reality.
“Sorry. I’m gonna squeeze past you,” he warned, then walked into the kitchen.
In the very confined space, it was impossible not to be aware of him. She had to bite her lip when he slipped past her, his arm brushing her back.
Her nerves were humming, instantly standing at attention. And much as Lily had chided herself about the one night stand in the past couple of days, it once again became painfully clear that her body had no regrets.
Thankfully, James appeared oblivious about the reaction his presence and proximity caused because he proceeded to open the fridge.
“Didn’t wanna bother you so I tried telling Sirius he could wait a while and I’d get him a coke later but… Well, you can imagine how that went down.”
“I’m half surprised I didn’t hear the resulting tirade,” Lily said, staring at her loaf of bread.
“Well, clearly you’re preoccupied.” James stood in front of the fridge for a while, and Lily could feel the weight of his gaze on her. “You don’t have to keep doing this, you know.”
“Doing what?” Surprised, she looked up and at him, though just a moment before she’d promised herself she wouldn’t. Ignoring him was safer.
“Baking. We can cook. Sirius is a pretty great cook when he isn’t busy playing the sickly frail little princess. And you’re our guest. And –”
“And nothing,” Lily cut in. “I know Sirius is milking it but he is sick, and letting a contagious person prepare food isn’t the best idea.”
“You’re right. Sorry. Still, it’s not fair to you. Let me help.”
“I appreciate the offer,” Lily said, her heart beating just a little faster. “But there’s only enough room for one chef in this kitchen.”
“Quite right,” James admitted with a chuckle. “I can all but feel the walls closing in on me.”
Lily smiled at her loaf. “Look, I promise I don’t mind. I enjoy baking and it relaxes me and I need relaxing in my life right now.”
“I hear that,” James said, with a rueful edge to his tone. “Every time I open the news it seems this virus is getting worse and worse.”
“Yeah.”
“Well, as long as you’re sure we’re not taking advantage,” James said, shifting from one foot to another.
“You are not,” Lily assured him. “And you are helping out a lot; you can’t really expect me to eat this all by myself.”
James cast a look around the kitchen. When he spoke, Lily could hear the smile in his voice. “Yeah, that might take you a while.”
“And then I’d burst and that wouldn’t be pretty,” Lily said. She gestured at brownies that were cooling on the counter. “Take one to Sirius, maybe it will shut him up for a moment.”
“You are amazing,” James told her, sending her heart into a wild flutter.
Then, he left the kitchen with the bottle of coke and two brownies he snatched from the pan as he passed.
His laughter, however, lingered. And when Lily finally slid her bread into the oven, she was still grinning like an idiot.
Tumblr media
The days dragged on slowly, even though the three of them had found various ways to entertain themselves in the small two-bedroom flat.
They’d had a video game tournament, which Sirius had naturally won. The surprise – to all of them, it seemed – was that Lily had come in second. After that, they had gone on to binge-watch every single episode of Queer Eye available on Netflix.
There had been many long conversations spanning a whole variety of topics.
And, of course, endless squabbles because that’s what happens when three differing temperaments, all of them in various states of ill-humour, were forced to share a confined space for an extended period of time.
There had been one spectacular evening of badly sung karaoke to songs found on Youtube. That had helped to balance nicely the countless hours they had spent playing Scrabble or Texas hold ‘em.
Lily had been filling their kitchen with all manners of baked goods and James had become a clean freak, tidying up the place and disinfecting surfaces several times a day.
And despite all these diverting pastimes James was still the one who was handling it the worst, which was a feat considering that this was his flat and unlike Lily, he hadn’t been stuck in an unfamiliar environment with two strangers.
But James was an active person. And an extroverted person. He loved going out. Without his regular morning jog, the stress was really building up.
He’d tried getting some move on with the help of the home work out videos that the internet was suddenly full of, but it just wasn’t the same.
Lily’s presence wasn’t exactly calming either. Although James loved to have her around, she seemed to possess the unique ability to render James instantly back to his fifteen-year-old self: jittery, stammering, and desperately wanting to appear cool in front of his crush, the initials of whom he kept doodling in the margins of his notes.
It was a state he hadn’t found himself in since those early days of his very first bout of puppy love. And while a part of him felt giddy about the unexpected return and what it might signify, the timing of it was decidedly unfortunate.
Oddly enough, the moments of the day he had come to appreciate the most, during which he had found most calm, were the ones in the late evenings that he would spend in Lily’s company.
He’d handed his room over to her use and had gentlemanly volunteered to take the couch in the living room. One evening, he’d come in to get a fresh shirt out of his wardrobe and had found Lily lying on the bed.
So as not to blush at the sight and the memories it evoked, he focused his attention on the device she was holding.
“Is that a tablet? Looks small.”
Lily glanced up and spared him a smile that immediately made his heartbeat pick up.
“No, it’s an e-reader.”
“Really? I haven’t seen one up close. Must be convenient.”
“It is. Reading relaxes me so it’s a good way to ensure I always have a whole library with me.”
Lily grinned at him, and by that point, James had wholly forgotten about his shirts and his wardrobe.
He sat down on the edge of the bed.
“What are you reading?” he asked, unable to contain his curiosity.
“Just started this murder mystery,” Lily said. “It’s been nice so far.”
“Sounds cool,” James said. Then, a little wistfully, he added: “Haven’t been able to read a book in ages myself.”
“Really?” Lily, who clearly must be an avid reader seemed almost scandalised by this. “How come?”
“I guess all the research papers in uni put me off from some of it. Mostly though it’s like I just can't concentrate enough to take in the information, you know?”
“Ahh, makes sense. Sitting still doesn’t seem to be your forte,” Lily commented, her eyes twinkling in a way that softened the teasing.
James let out a short laugh. “That’s too true.”
“Maybe you should give audiobooks a try,” Lily suggested.
Feeling bold, James took a leap. “Maybe you could try reading out loud.”
Lily blinked, but rather than outright sputter at the idea, she tilted her head in thought.
“Would you really like that?”
“Yeah I think that would be nice,” James said, the glimmer of hope in his heart gaining strength.
And that was how, every evening now, James and Lily would both be lying down on his bed while Lily read the murder mystery aloud to him.
It settled James, in a way few things in life did. He wasn’t sure if it was Lily’s nearness, the warmth of her voice or the engrossing story they were reading.
Most probably some combination of all of them.
All James knew was that he already was dreading their quarantine coming to an end, because as maddening as being stuck in the flat was for him, this new evening routine was something he would sorely miss.
But even more than that, he would miss the company of one Lily Evans.
Tumblr media
Time had become a strange, mystical creature. Though each day had felt like a slow crawl, the weeks had taken flight.
One morning, while sipping her tea, Lily was momentarily stunned as she realised twelve days had passed.
In just two more days, she could go home.
Sirius was still sick, but his symptoms had remained mild and he had improved in the past couple of days. By some miracle, neither James nor Lily had contracted the virus, as both of them still felt completely fine.
Perhaps all James’ maniacal cleaning during the long, slow days of their quarantine had paid off.
She was smiling into her cup of tea when a bleary-eyed James sat up on his makeshift bed on the sofa and ran his hand through his hair.
“What time is it?”
Lily glanced at her phone. “It’s almost half-seven. I hope I didn’t wake you.”
“You did,” James said, putting his glasses on, “but it’s fine. I usually wake up much earlier than I have been this whole week.”
“Ah, right,” Lily said, remembering their conversation from several days back. “Well, soon enough you’ll be back jogging every morning.”
“I can’t wait,” James said fervently, earning another smile from Lily.
James got up from the sofa and stretched.
Lily unashamedly admired his physique while he bent to retrieve his trousers and pulled them on.
While James walked past her into the cupboard pretending to be the kitchen, Lily busied herself with her breakfast.
James emerged a moment later and sat down at the small table next to her, a cup of coffee in hand.
“You know what’s funny?” Lily asked, after a moment of quiet companionship.
Sirius wouldn’t wake up before 10 o'clock, so they always had mornings to themselves.
“What’s that?” James asked, his elbows propped on the table, biceps curling just below the sleeve of his t-shirt.
“I felt so awkward being here with you guys at first,” Lily confessed. “And now in less than two weeks I’m almost used to this.”
James was silent for a moment, one nervous finger tapping at his coffee mug, his jaw clenching.
Then, he swallowed and met her eyes.
“You know what else is funny?” he asked in a soft voice.
“What?” Lily managed, her own voice hushed by the storm she could see in his hazel eyes.
Anticipation crept up her spine and she leaned towards him. Her breath caught at the expression flitting across James’ face.
“I don’t want you to leave.”
Lily’s heart leapt and her stomach erupted with the butterflies. She’d barely even processed the words, when James continued, a definite blush colouring his cheeks.
“I mean,” he said with a slight stammer, “obviously you’re looking forward to going home and I want you to go home too and this whole thing has been just one big mess and I feel like we’ve done everything the wrong way around –”
Lily reached across the table and gently took James’ hand that had been restlessly drumming against the tabletop.
He fell silent and when their eyes met, his blush deepened.
James sighed, and run his other hand through his hair, messing it up even more.
It was a gesture that had become both familiar and endearing to Lily in these past twelve days, and her heart ached.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt this way about anyone,” James said at last, squeezing her hand.
“Well then, after I get home you’re gonna have to ring me and ask me out for a real date,” Lily said, unable to hold back the smile blooming on her lips.
She wasn’t sure either if she’d ever quite felt the way she did right at this moment, wrapped up in the tenderness of James’ obvious regard.
“Does that mean I’m getting your number after all?” James replied, grinning at her as the mood lightened.
“Yes.”
They smiled at each other.
And because it was ridiculous how much her heart could race from just holding hands, Lily couldn’t help adding: “If you fail to ring me, I will hunt you down. After all, I know where you live.”
James burst into laughter.
Lily had thought she couldn’t be happier than she was just then, watching James laugh. But she was proven wrong in the next moment when his thumb brushed across her knuckles.
Maybe they had done everything the wrong way around as James had said… But it had certainly worked out.
If this was just the beginning, she couldn’t wait to see what would come next.
Tumblr media
Two days later, early in the morning, they parted ways.
There were no tears, but they held each other for a long moment, both of them just as unwilling to let go. And the kiss Lily pulled James into in the doorway was lingering as well.
The memory of it still warmed her, as Lily got safely back to her flat.
The peace and quiet that greeted her were both welcoming and unsettling. After not being alone for so many days, being on her own felt strange.
But also good.
She kept busy for most of the day, making sure she was stocked up on food and that everything seemed clean and nice.
She might no longer be in quarantine, but the news of the virus seemed to get worse and scarier day after day, so she was in no hurry to get back out there.
That evening, Lily was happy – no, she was ecstatic – to be lying in her own bed at last.
It was smaller than the one she’d slept during her quarantine and her sheets didn’t carry James’ scent… But snuggled into a small mountain of pillows she was perfectly comfortable even as she frowned at the e-reader in her lap.
She couldn’t continue the book. The words kept getting stuck somewhere between her eyes and her restless brain. She couldn’t concentrate on the story when her mind was busy reminiscing the evening moments spent in James' company.
A smile tugged at her lips until the sound of her ringtone dragged her away from the memories.
Lily reached for her phone, the smile turning into a proper grin as she saw the name on the display.
“Hello?” she answered the phone.
“So I’d ask you out,” James’ voice drawled from the other end, “but it seems there’s a global pandemic out there.”
“That does sound like a small drawback,” Lily replied, falling right back into the easy banter, as if she’d never left.
“Raincheck on the date?” James said.
“Definitely. I’m not letting you off the hook so easily,” Lily said.
“Good. I’m very comfortable on the hook,” James said, earning a laugh from Lily. “But now to the real business.”
“Which is?”
“So the investigator was lured into the cellar, right? And then the door was bolted shut. Does he get out? How?”
Lily snuggled back into her pillows, her smile so wide her cheeks were starting to hurt.
“Well you’ll have to listen and find out,” she told him.
Then, she picked up the e-reader with her free hand and began to read out loud.

Never Lose You P2
the second (and final) part of my Jily fic, Never Lose You, totally inspired by Cornelia Street by Taylor! You can find Part 1 right here and read part 2 below, or the whole thing on ao3here
By the time they had climbed the three flights of stairs up to their apartment, Sirius dramatically pretending to gasp for air by the top, all the feelings had completely rushed back to her. Despite the time separated, and the awkwardness of their last conversation, she was quickly remembering why James was one of her favorite people in the world. She never could forget that smile, the way his lips were quirked permanently on the edge of laughter or a quick joke. Remembered how he and his friends had their own secret language and world, but made sure their other friends were never excluded. Always with a finger on her back, a wink shot her way.
Marlene and Lily went straight to the kitchen to gather beers and solo cups and some vodka for Alice. They worked as a team, efficient and quick, finding mismatched large mixing bowls to pour some slightly stale tortilla chips in with some salsa.
In the small living room, Alice had quickly put the boys to work, instructing them to scour the apartment for other seating options they could cram into the tiny living room to make a circle around the coffee table.
Sirius and Remus made quick work of Marlene’s room, grabbing her extra throw blankets and pillows from her bed to toss about the living room floor and give someone something to sit on. Sirius found ‘the armchair’ that Marlene had found in the alley across the street and threw all of the clothes and makeup piled on top of it onto Marlene's bed. He dragged it out into the living room before throwing himself into it sideways, tossing his legs over the arm of it.
Remus, too, tossed out the beanbag chair from Mar’s room and promptly launched himself onto it, claiming it for the night.
Lily and Mar loaded up the coffee table with their various drinks and snacks. Right as she was about to settle herself on the couch Marlene interrupted her actions, “Lily-love, could you grab a deck of playing cards from your room? Just in case we want to play Kings or something,” Marlene's smirk was met by a chorus of agreement from the boys, so Lily dragged herself into her room. Yanking off her heels as she walked down the hall, she immediately launched them into the corner of her room containing her closet without looking and planned to go right to her bedside table when a deep voice let out a “Bloody Hell Evans!”
Lily promptly shrieked and whipped around, hand over her heart, to spot James clutching one of her heels in the corner of her room, the other laying a foot to the left of him.
“Watch where you toss these things, Lily! They’ve got spikes!” James huffed indignantly, waving the heel of the shoe at her.
“In case you hadn’t noticed James,” Lily started, hands immediately finding on her hips, “this is my bloody room! I can throw my shoes wherever I bloody well please! What are you doing in here?” Lily tried to sound angry or annoyed but really it just sounded a bit breathless. Her heart was pounding way too fast and while she’d like to blame the fright he gave her, she figured it actually had much more to do with the boy in her room. And the bed separating them. The big bed.
James seemed to realize how incriminating it was for him to be just standing there, in her bedroom, where she kept her underthings, clutching her shoe. His hand immediately shot to his hair, a strong blush following it up his neck. “Alice told me to come look for a chair or cushion or erm something. I got a tad distracted by your erm photos and things,” he gestured to the wall of pictures Lily had covering the wall behind her bed. She noticed him looking particularly at one photo in the bottom left corner. A picture of them, all snuggled up laughing. In the photo, Lily was looking ahead towards the camera, eyes closed as she laughed raucously. James, on the other hand, had been staring right at her. Even in the picture, you could see the sparkle in his eyes.
“Oh of course.” Lily stepped closer to the photos, abandoning her search for the cards. “Makes me happy to see them all when I come back from work. Do you remember this one?” She pointed towards a photo in the dead center, “Right after the championship match before that wild party, right?” James laughed as he leaned closer.
She wouldn’t tell him but it was her favorite picture on the whole wall, showing Lily tightly pulled under James’ arm, smashed in between him and Sirius grinning wildly, red and gold facepaint covering her face while Marlene clung to Sirius’ back mid laugh, waving the championship trophy overhead.
“That was a great day. Remember when Sirius broke that table trying to do a cartwheel and almost landed in the fire?”
She could have spent the whole night there, reminiscing about their stupid mates and telling new stories as James pointed to picture after picture, asking the stories. She told him all about the photo of her and dad surrounded by alpacas, about the tiny little chubby baby, who she had to assure James that it was not her illegitimate child, but rather Petunia’s new baby boy. “Dudley Dursley, isn’t it horrific? I mean give the boy a chance!” He laughed so hard that he felt his face becoming red and his cheeks hurting as she explained the one of Marlene and her on a boat in Greece, where her skin was painfully bright red because the wind had blown away her floppy hat so she had to spend the rest of the boat ride painfully sunburnt.
She hadn’t even noticed that as they spoke and laughed they both moved from standing to sitting on opposite sides of the bed, facing the photos. And then slowly turned to now face each other. Still on opposite sides of the bed, but closer now, much closer. Close enough that she could smell him, feel the way his laugh vibrated. She felt electric being this close to him, and if she had thought it through she undoubtedly would have jumped up and moved further away, but she couldn’t do that when it felt so undeniably natural to be sitting here laughing with him.
He was in the middle of telling her about the time him and the boys had their own exploits in Greece, including waking up after a long night to find Sirius asleep on the balcony surrounded by 16 cats, when Alice burst into the room.
“Lily, did you get lost? What is taking so long-” Lily and James both shot off of the bed in different directions as Alice walked in and took in the scene before her.
“Okay then. See you guys out there.” Alice nodded calmly and walked right back out of the room.
“I guess we should-”
“Yeah, probably.” James had his hand back in his hair ruffling again and started to leave the room. Lily stared after him for a second before clearing her throat and digging through her bedside table for the card deck. Right as she was leaving, she noticed his jacket still around her. She shrugged out of it, folding it lightly but not quite ready to give it back to him. She left it on her bed.
When she reentered the living room, cards in hand, she saw that Peter had stolen her seat on the couch, leaving the only open space being on a pillow, on the ground, next to James.
He nodded at her awkwardly and took a large gulp from his cup as she lowered herself carefully onto the pillow next to him, careful to keep all of her limbs to her regulated area.
She reached out for a beer of her own and took a long drink. Marlene tried to catch Lily’s eye but when she only saw the underside of her cup instead, she quickly understood it would be a discussion for later instead.
“Okay! So! The game is Kings! If you’ve never played-”
“McKinnon, no!” Sirius interrupted, “I want to play never have I ever!”
“Sirius, you lose Never Have I Ever every single time. You’ve done everything. Shut up and listen,” James retorted, throwing a chip at Sirius who caught it and ate it.
“It’s because I’ll try anything once,” he said wolfishly, giving Alice an exaggerated wink.
As the night went on, the drinks and laughs continued to flow and Lily’s strict personal space slowly shifted as she traveled into the neutral territory between them. But then at some point, James had shifted so he was lying on his stomach, with just his elbows on the pillow and his head in his hands, and Lily had shifted slightly so she was lying sideways now along her pillow and really the easiest place for her feet to rest was on James’s back. And really, when he complained that they smelled and she was infiltrating his space with disgusting feet, the only thing that made any sense to do was to leap on top of his back- “Infiltrate your space? I’ll show you infiltrated!”- and then as she lied there on top of his back, full weight on him, she realized just how poorly of an idea this was. It would have been much worse if he had been facing up because then she’d have to stare at his face, but this was also worse because now she was left with her head practically in his hair and oh my god why does it smell so good? What 20 something year old boy has hair and body that somehow smells like peppermint and cinnamon and delicious? And as if the smell of him wasn’t enough, just from pressing along his back she could feel how hard his body had become. Strong and toned. Gone was any of the former squish teenagers had. This was the body of a man and dear god that was terrifying.
Right as she was contemplating the least awkward way to remove herself from his person Sirius FLEW on top of her as well, making both James and Lily groan, screaming “DOG-PILE”. Marlene quickly followed Sirius’ lead and soon Lily was completely and utterly trapped, smushed with her face lying straight in James’ delicious peppermint/cinnamon/something combo hair and having her person and front bits all smushed alongside his back. She wondered if he could feel her thundering heart against his back.
“Sirius, you oaf! Get off of me before I vomit all over you all!” Lily shrieked. James grunted in agreement.
Eventually, they all climbed off and Lily slowly was able to roll off of James, now lying alongside him, facing the sky while both her and James stretched out the kinks. “Well, that was fun,” James groaned turning his head to look at Lily, who was still staring at the ceiling.
Lily hummed in agreement, refusing to meet his eyes, knowing that they’d be warm and golden hazel and beautiful and be far too much for her to handle after being reminded what he smelled and felt like.
“Lily?” he questioned quietly, while all the others continued to refill their drinks and settle back in, still laughing at Sirius.
She gulped and turned her head to meet his eye, surprised at how close they still were, barely two inches between them. She could feel his warm breath on her face and the depth of emotion immediately took her breath away. Hazel eyes filled with warmth but not light, no they were quickly becoming pitch black and full of something else. Lust or passion, heat, something, but whatever it was, Lily was quite sure her eyes matched his.
She held his gaze evenly, completely tuning out all of the other voices around them, as they lied there, breathing heavily.
“Lily,” he whispered, voice laden with want and fear. The want part scared her the most and she tore her gaze away from his, to look back up at the ceiling. The ceiling that was now spinning. Oh god.
She took a deep breath and pulled herself so she was sitting up, James twisting around to do the same, looking at her like he was afraid of her. Like she was a delicate bird that would fly away at the first sign of movement.
“Lily,” he spoke again, cautiously. She looked at him for a moment, unable to make any words come out before jumping up. “Um, bathroom.” She explained to Mar when they all looked at her in alarm as she stood up. The girls nodded slowly like they understood something else was going on.
Lily stood there for a moment, taking in the room around her. Peter was now asleep in the corner of the couch, snoring lightly with his mouth open, while Remus seemed to be making a game of trying to throw pieces of chips into his open mouth. Sirius lazed still in his armchair, drink in hand, head hanging off the opposite side of the chair. And James, sweet, good James. Sitting there, watching her desperately.
She turned on her heel and walked in the opposite direction of the bathroom but instead to the small balcony off the kitchen. It was barely big enough to squeeze two little chairs but it was Marlene and Lily’s favorite part of the whole apartment. Coffee or wine on those little chairs were their favorite ways to pass any weekend.
Now, Lily walked out and leaned up against the railing, looking down at the street below.
“What are you doing, what are you doing, what are you doing?” she whispered fiercely to herself, running her hands across her face, before pulling at her hair, whipping it quickly into a ponytail.
She didn’t hear the sound of the door sliding open, but she heard it close, and instantly knew who it would be. Of course he would follow her out here. He always followed her, always knew. How could he still know her like that, after all this time?
“James,” she whispered.
“Hey, Lils.” He said it casually, with a kind of lightness that Lily envied. Clearly he was not as affected by her because she knew she couldn’t match that level of lowkey.
With a deep breath, she turned around to face him and found him leaning against the door, watching her. His posture was casual and calm, but she saw something else in his eyes entirely. Some forced guard hiding the emotions he usually left in plain sight.
“Why’d you come out here, James?” Despite any attempts at casualness, her voice came out as nothing less than desperate.
“Why did you, Lily?” He sounded like he was trying very hard to not shout the words at her.
“I don't know,” she looked down, “I don’t know anything anymore. The room was getting hot and uncomfortable, I just needed… air I guess”
“That’s exactly what you told me you needed that night.” he sounded less angry, more defeated. “You asked me to come get some air with you, that the party was getting too ‘hot, busy, and uncomfortable’ so I took you to the roof to look at the stars.” Now James was the one refusing to meet her eyes. Staring pointedly at something behind her left shoulder.
“I remember,” she whispered, “James, that night. I am so sorry.” the words were pouring out of her now, desperately trying to escape and explain what she’d been trying to figure out for the past five years.
“James, you meant so much to me. Mean so much to me. I was just… scared,” she explained pathetically, feeling vulnerable and weak. He searched her face with his eyes and she wrapped her arms around herself, trying to hold herself together.
“Scared of what, Lily? Me? You know I would never hurt you. You meant everything to me. And I thought we were finally in the same place, finally in a place where we could admit that, without the pressure and expectations of school and then you just, rejected me. Rejected me without an explanation or reason or a backward glance you just… left. You left me alone up there.” There was no anger left in his voice, just hurt and pain.
She couldn’t stand to see that pain in his eyes, knowing she had caused it. She took a step forward, reaching out an arm to his shoulder and then quickly bringing it back to her side without touching him.
“You meant everything to me too, James, you did! You still do! I just wasn’t ready. I could handle the pressure at school, but I couldn’t handle that in the world. We were just kids! I wanted you, of course I wanted you, but I didn’t think I could start something when we were just starting out on our own,” she was speaking fast, rushing to make him understand, “I was so scared, James. We were going to be starting new lives and I knew you deserved better than me but I couldn’t take it. I was being stupid. I was stupid and scared and I blamed it on you and I am so sorry James, I would take it all back if I could. I was so stupid” she reached out for him now, gripping one of his hands between both of hers.
“What about after?” he whispered urgently, still looking at her with such intensity. “Why did it take so long and a random run in at a bar to make you tell me this?”
“I don't know, I assumed you moved on. I thought you might not want to see me, I was just scared and embarrassed that I ever pushed you away. But James, I am so happy I ran into you. I am so happy you came into that dive bar, whatever drew you there. It was inevitable and I am so sorry I ever did anything to stop it.” She reached one of her hands around the back of his head, fiddling with the hair at the nape of his neck, keeping his eyes level with hers. She felt her stomach flip as some of the guardedness leaked out, leaving behind so much emotion to show.
She knew whatever happened, whatever he said, she would never be the same. She couldn’t lose him again, she would never be able to go back to that bar. To look at his picture again. This would be the heartbreak time would never mend.
“Lily,” he brought the hand not holding hers up to wrap around her neck, thumb caressing her cheek. “If this is going to happen, you need to know that this is for good. I am not letting you walk away again.” He stared into her eyes honestly, looking for any hesitancy.
“There’s nowhere I’d want to go,” was all Lily could whisper before she pulled his head down and reached up to meet his lips in the middle.
They kissed softly for half a second before it turned hungry, passionate, strong, and utterly mind robbing. James was quick to switch their positions and hold her up against the door, pressing into her with all of his weight. She pulled him down harder, loving the feel of him against her, the smell of him, the feel of his hair in between her fingers.
He groaned her name out as she pulled at his hair, which she responded to by nipping lightly at his lower lip. He reached an arm around her lower back to pull her in closer, holding her up as he began to travel, down her neck. Kisses punishing and powerful and so James. With him working on her pulse points she was left to pull at his hair and whisper his name heatedly, about to yank his mouth back to hers by his hair-
“Well, well, well,” Sirius yanked the door to the balcony open, “what do we have here?”
James yanked his head away from hers to look at their intruder, but continued to hold her up against him as he shot the finger towards Sirius. Lily hid her red face in James’s shoulder as their friend laughed obnoxiously.
“Marlene, you’ll never guess who is ruining your balcony with their depraved sinfulness,” Sirius called over his shoulder, while James groaned, pushing his nose into Lily’s hair to hide.
“Guess we’ve run out of time,” Lily whispered into his ear.
“Nah, love,” James pulled away, grabbing his hands in hers and walking them backwards towards the balcony door Sirius had left open. “We’ve got forever.”
They walked back in to loud cheers and whistles from their friends, which quickly woke Peter up and he immediately began to cough up the few tortilla chip bits Remus had successfully thrown at him.
Lily felt embarrassed for half a second before looking up at the extremely fit bloke holding her hand. Suddenly she quite felt like cheering as well.

BACKSTORY
▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The day you got your Hogwarts letter, your parents lectured you hours on end about specific rules you had to respect. Of course, they'd repeat them every year, sometimes they'd add things, sometimes they'd remove one or two. But one rule - well, subject, that your mother repeated every year when your father couldn't hear, was about your soulmate. A subject that you didn't particularly enjoy, it was boresome, especially when you heard it every year on the 1st of September. Your mother said the exact same words every year.
'Now darling, you'll meet your soulmate sooner or later. Once you turn eighteen, you'll stop ageing until you find your soulmate. It's something that only happens to witches and wizards, no one knows how it happens, but it just does. Now, do you remember why it happens.'
She straightened your coat and raised an eyebrow at you. Patting your arms, removing all crinkles.
You sighing loudly and rolling your eyes, you answered.
'Yes.'
'Explain please, I know I say it every year but it's important you know.'
'When you find your soulmate, you start growing old, so the two of you shall grow old together.' you huffed.
She smiled brightly and nodded, pulling you into a tight embrace. That was an action that would happen every year. Although your mother forced you to repeat the same sentence, every, freaking, year, you simply ignored it, forgetting about it, of course until she reminded you.
You remembered it so vividly, the day you and Sirius were in the common room, running around like headless chickens, screaming loudly, and punching the air. Grabbing each other whilst cheering crazily. The day you and Sirius got a house, the day the letter came to confirm that you'd gotten the house. Kissing the letter and holding it above your head. At the end of this year, you were going to live in a house with your best friend of seven years. It was the best feeling in the whole world, it was pure joy and excitement.
When you were younger, you'd been friends with the Potters, which led to you and their son; James, to be close friends. At Hogwarts, you and James met three other boys; Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. Even though you were close to all of them, you, James and Sirius had a plan of living together. Of course, James ruined the plans, he'd fallen in love with a muggle-born called Lily Evans and asked her out. They told you that they were planning on moving in together and starting a family. Much to your disgust, you knew it was for the best, James had been crushing on her for years now, and on the bright side, you weren't going to have to clean up his mess. Sirius had refused to talk to James for almost a month until you told him to stop being a 'stinking, dramatic git' and that if he kept doing this you were going to live on your own. It worked perfectly and he apologised, wishing them both good luck.
The moment you opened the front door, Sirius wrapped an arm around you and pulled you closer, before murmuring into your ear 'home'. Once he let go of you, you saw a sparkle in his eye, you knew exactly what that meant. Sprinting up the stairs, you (knew) screamed that the largest room was definitely going to be yours.
These were the memories you cherished. Times you wish you could freeze and live in the moment forever, enduring the same emotion; happiness. You wish you could go back, lying on the grass by the black lake with your mates, James giving you kisses on your head and Sirius hugging so tightly that you couldn't breathe. Yes, you loved living with Sirius, but being in the castle with the rest was something you missed so dearly.
You woke up at 3 AM, it wasn't intentional, it happened almost every day, which annoyed the living heck out of you. Glancing at your calendar, you noticed what day it was, November 3rd, today, Sirius Orion Black turned twenty-two. You contemplated on giving your present to him now or waiting. Deciding to give it now, you grabbed the large rectangular box from under your bed and made your way to his room. Turning the knob and tiptoeing in, you snuck into the bed. Leaving the box on the fluffy carpet.
'Sirius, Sirius, wake up.' you whisper-shouted.
Sirius snored loudly and turned over, covering his steely grey eyes with his arm. You shook him a bit but he showed no interest in waking up.
'Go away.' he spat tiredly,
'No.'
'Leave.'
'Never.'
Groaning loudly, he sat up, took the nearest pillow and threw it at you and flopped back onto the mattress.
'Merlin, I was just gonna say happy birthday...' you muttered.
Sirius opened one eye, his smooth black hair covering half of his hair, you saw a smile grow on his face.
'Aw, sweetheart.'
'I'm not your child.'
'You act like one.'
You plopped down next to him and he draped an arm around you, boy oh boy would you're mother kill you if she saw this. Resting your head on his bare chest, you fell asleep whilst he played with your loose strands of hair.
You woke up feeling groggy, patting the side next to you where Sirius should've been, you noticed it was empty. Staggering down to the kitchen, you saw him, looking outside, his wand was tucked behind his ear and he was holding a steaming blue mug. You snaked your arms around his waist and whispered another happy birthday.
'Oh shoot! I forgot to give you the present last night, it's still on the floor of your bedroom. I'll go get it.' you exclaimed,
'Y/N, you didn't have to get me a present!' lied Sirius,
'My arse.'
He chuckled loudly.
'Whatever!'
Before Sirius could take another sip of his tea, you snatched his mug and sat on the counter.
'You're so annoying.' he pouted.
Ignoring his remark, you smirked at him.
'I have a question.'
'Proceed.'
'Did you fall from heaven?'
'Aw-'
'So did Satan.'
The man thrust his middle finger into the air and you giggled. You jogged upstairs and fetched the box from the room. You hid it behind your back and then placed it in his hands, undoing the ribbon and lifting off the lid, Sirius grinned brightly. In his hands was a pristine leather biking jacket.
'I love it!'
'I knew you would.'
Placing a soft kiss on the top of your head, you looked at Sirius. Your eyes widened and you gaped like a fish out of water.
'I SEE A WRINKLE!' you screamed,
'You're insane, that's not possible, I haven't found a soulmate.'
Grabbing a framed picture of you and Sirius at eighteen, you put it next to his face. Analyzing carefully the features, you stood mindfucked.
'You aged...'
Staring at each other, confused and awkward, moments like this never ever happened, you always super talkative around each other.
'Who?' you asked,
'I have absolutely no idea,' Sirius was being honest, the only girl/boy he'd really focused these past few years was you, 'let's see if you aged.'
'I bet not. I'm forever a lone wolf.' you chuckled, mimicking howls.
Repeating the actions you had done, he squinted his eyes before stumbling backwards.
'YOU AGED!'
And then it hit you;
Sirius Orion Black, your best friend/aristocratic beauty is and always was,
Your soulmate.

Sirius Black and the eleven times he fell in love with Marlene McKinnon // 6-10 of 11 // 1-5 11
6.
Sixth year was when he found her stepping in as a couple of older Slytherins were wailing on Regulus because Sirius had picked fights with them earlier that week—and it was common knowledge among those who messed with Sirius that one of the easiest ways to get to him was through his brother whether or not either boy admitted to it. She hexed them and when they were gone, Regulus yelled at her that the didn’t need her help—and in typical Marlene fashion, she didn’t stand for a moment of it and yelled right back at him to stop being an unappreciative twat.
Sirius noticed after that how Regulus would smile at her when they passed each other in the halls or from across the courtyard and although the brothers were not on speaking terms, Sirius knew then that his little brother had a crush on Marlene.
7.
During their seventh year was the second time he saw her cry.
Now when he said that he saw her cry, Sirius didn’t mean in the way she’d cried the first time he witnessed the strange anomaly on that crisp night by the lake. This time it was at Rosemerta’s pub and if he didn’t know her as well as he did, he might have mistaken the shimmering in her puffy eyes for something else. But he knew Marlene and he knew what it looked like when the heart was heavy. He just wasn’t familiar with the look on her.
He slid into the booth beside her quietly and waited until she noticed him, wiping her cheeks as she turned to him and then he waited for her to speak—waited longer than he would have liked, but he couldn’t bring himself to pry. Finally, she spoke, and her voice was as bold as ever but he could hear something small and broken in the way it carried.
“I thought things might be different this time,” she admitted.
She told him all about the boy she’d been dating—he had no idea she’d been dating anyone seriously in the first place. She didn’t do that, after all, for this reason exactly. She’d seen sister after sister and both of her brothers have their hearts broken time after time since she was young and Marlene had sworn early that she wouldn’t ever let that happen to her.
“But I’m stupid and I had to go and catch feelings.”
He placed a hand on top of hers. “That doesn’t mean you’re stupid, Marls. It means you care.”
“Fat lot of good that did me.” She shook her head and laughed up at the low beams above their heads. “Dorcas was right—I should have just stuck to girls.”
He laughed at that too. “What fun is it to pick?”
Marlene rolled her eyes. “Everyone has to pick sooner or later.”
“Says who?”
“Everyone—I mean, what’s the point of all this if you never find the right person?”
Her eyes burned in the candlelight when he caught her eye and for half of a second, Sirius forgot how to breathe. He hoped beyond hope that she couldn’t see into his thoughts and she couldn’t feel the way his heart wanted to reach out for her own to hold. Those feelings were for him and him alone.
“Maybe finding the right person isn’t about choosing. Maybe it’s about finding the someone who doesn’t make you choose and still loves you all the same.”
The girl couldn’t help but smile at that. “It’s a lovely thought, Black, but that’s a pipe dream if I’ve ever heard one. People like that don’t exist.”
A long second passed between them as his words weighed heavily on his tongue before at last he couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Well, I wouldn’t make you choose.” He wished he’d held his tongue.
Her eyes snapped up to his and like he’d been struck with a silent spell, he couldn’t look away from her even as she looked at him in the most peculiar way. She tilted her head, caramel hair spilling around her in soft waves. “You wouldn’t?”
“Of course not,” he said. “As long as you didn’t make me choose, I’d never ask you to give up half of yourself. Besides,” he grinned as he scooted towards her and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, “it would be a disservice to the world to keep all our raw sexuality restrained.”
She laughed in spite of herself and shoved him. “We wouldn’t make it a week, Black. I’d eat you alive.”
“Don’t threaten me with a good time, love.”
They remained like that for a few moments before their friends started trickling in through the door and the quiet booth filled with new voices and laughter and smiles and the two slid apart, his arms warm where he’d pressed along beside her. She felt lighter—like the holes that had been punched out by that boy whose name she’d forget in no time at all were hardly there at all.
8.
The day she became an aunt for the first time, he saw her light up in a way that took his breath away. She passed the photograph across the breakfast table after ripping into the letter like it held her last gulp of air and the gleeful laugh that tore from her throat released a swarm of butterflies in his stomach. He looked down at the beautiful woman in the photograph and picked out every way they looked alike while she rambled on about her new nephew.
“Kurt is a dumb name,” he finally remarked as he passed it back to her and shoveled a spoonful of porridge into his mouth—because surely the rumbling was just hunger.
She crossed her arms and glared at him. “What would you have named him, then? Scorpius?”
His nose scrunched in response. “God no, McKinnon. That’s a bloody horrid name. Something sensible—something like Jeff.”
With nothing more than a raised eyebrow, Marlene scoffed at him and bounded off to the next table to show off her newest family member. Sirius watched her go with half of a smirk but every time he blinked, he could see only her blinding smile burned into the back of his eyes like a ghost.
9.
On the sunny seventh of April, 1979, Sirius stood beside James Potter and watched Lily Evans walk towards them for the last time. Marlene stood beside her and smiled that blinding smile she saved for the few occasions such as this and by the time the day faded into a perfectly crisp evening, they stood beside James and Lily Potter as they shared their first kiss as husband and wife.
Sirius would deny with his dying breath that Marlene was telling the truth when she went around the party telling all their friends how he’d cried as James gave his vows (“If he’d just stuck to the script we wrote yesterday, it wouldn’t have been so sappy, okay!”) but when he turned to snap at her, he found she hadn’t faired much better as she carefully wiped away the smeared makeup from her wet eyes. James and Lily danced and laughed and smeared cake on each other’s faces, as Remus assured them was a muggle wedding tradition, and as the night faded into a sea of stars, the guest trickled away little by little.
Sirius and Marlene swayed alongside a handful of others and Sirius pressed his lips to her feather-soft hair, his eyes falling shut as her fingers tightened on his shirt and he decided that this was one of those moments he wanted never to end.
10.
When Sirius broke his leg playing muggle football, he did so without the knowledge that Marlene had went on to be a healer at St. Mungo’s. He was more than surprised that she hadn’t become an Auror like her father and most of her siblings had, like James had been trying to convince him to do for some time since they left Hogwarts.
It wasn’t that he didn’t believe she had the skills to do it, it was just that in all his years of knowing Marlene, he’d grown content in the knowledge that her skills lied with inflicting pain and not healing it. So when her face was the one he was greeted with after hobbling in with Remus’s help, it was a bit of a shock to say the least. Her hands were surprisingly soft as she manipulated the offset bone in his shin—but that didn’t stop him from groaning in pain.
His fingers curled against the bedsheet and he let out a string of curses that would have earned him a scolding from Lily if she’d heard the things he said.
“Fuck, McKinnon, if I’d known you were going to be the one healing me, I might have taken the broken leg instead.”
Her hands stalled and she lifted her head to glare at him. “If you don’t want my help, you’re welcome to walk away, Black. Though I’m not confident you’ll get very far.” This time, her grip was rougher as she jolted the bone into place and Sirius bit the pillow in his hands to keep from screaming out.
He cursed at her again and she smirked at him from the corner of her eye. “If you stop squirming so much, it wouldn’t hurt so badly.”
“If you weren’t so rough it wouldn’t hurt so badly, either.”
“And here I thought you liked it rough.”
Sirius gasped at her out-of-the blue suggestion. “Healer McKinnon, I am aghast. Here I am, a humbled injured man, and you have the mind to take advantage of me in my state?”
“What state is that? Insanity?”
He laughed. “You’ve got me there.”
Marlene just shook her head. “All these years and you still haven’t changed one bit.”
With more effort than he cared to admit to, Sirius pushed himself up to rest on his elbows and watch as she worked over him—her face always spoke levels beyond her words.
“I saw you four months ago, Marls.”
She didn’t meet his eye, but he could see the sad way hers turned down. “It feels so much longer,” she murmured.
It felt longer for him, too.
He knew what she was thinking about, the friends they’d lost—Mary MacDonald being among the worst, Amelia Bones’s brother and parents, even Caradoc Dearborn, whose big blue eyes brought back memories that felt like young summer days, had disappeared one day and still had yet to be found. There was so much loss and so much still left to lose—he couldn’t even think of the idea of one day losing her, too.
Sirius cleared the emotion from his throat. “How is Dorcas? Are the two of you still living together?”
This time, she did spare him a glance as her cheeks colored. “Dorcas is lovely as always,” she replied with a small, tight smile. “We’re still living together—but we’re not, eh, together anymore.”
His brows rose in surprise as it seemed his attempt to lighten the mood had flipped before his eyes. “Oh,” he mumbled, “I’m sorry. I didn’t know—”
The young woman just shook her head, giving a little laugh. “It’s better this way; we’re better as friends, anyhow.”
He couldn’t say one way or the other if he agreed, but he’d seen just how enamored the girls were with each other through the years at school and a small part of him had always thought they would end up together.
He cleared his throat again. “What happened?”
“With Dorcas?” She clarified—when he nodded, she shrugged her shoulders in a small response. “A lot happened, I suppose.”
She brushed down the apron on her skirt and turned away from him, appraising the vials of potions on the shelves behind them with a keen eye and quick hands. She found what she’d been looking for and returned to his side, moving to sit beside him on the bed this time.
“I guess the biggest part was that she wanted me to choose.”
She wanted her to choose—Sirius’s mind flashed back to a simpler time just over a year earlier when they were still in school and they spent their evenings drinking butterbeer with their friends in the perfect cozy pub. He knew exactly what she was referring to and by the look on her face, she knew that he remembered just as clearly as she did.
After another pause, Marlene shrugged. “But it doesn’t matter now.” With a loud pop, she pulled the cork from the bottle in her hand and passed it over to him with a grin.
“Bottoms up, Black.”
He didn’t dare take a whiff of the potion inside. “This is exactly what I think it is, isn’t it?” At Marlene’s nod, he threw back the contents of the vial and groaned to keep himself from hurling.
“Why do you hate me, McKinnon?” he whined.
She laughed at him with that familiar tone he hadn’t heard in far too long and she smiled in that way that so few had ever seen. “Someone’s got to keep you in check.”

Pillow Talk: A Jily Oneshot
Summary: Lily Evans has a bad habit of dozing off in the Marauders’ dorm. At first, it’s accidental. But when a certain messy-haired Quidditch Captain finds her in the Common Room at an ungodly hour, he makes her an offer she can’t bring herself to refuse. Sharing a bed won’t be weird, because they’re just friends…right? [Read it on ao3 here!]
She hadn’t meant to do it.
The first time Lily Evans fell asleep in the Marauders’ dorm had been entirely by accident. She and Remus had been pouring over their Charms assignment into the early hours of the morning, and then suddenly she was being jostled awake as he tried to sneak out of bed.
“Sorry, Lily. I tried not to wake you,” he’d whispered sheepishly. She’d sat bolt upright, her hair sticking up in all directions, and squinted at him in the semi-darkness of the warm room
“What time is it?” she’d groaned.
“Somewhere ‘round 6am.”
“Merlin,” she’d grumbled, forcing the sleep from her eyes and grabbing her things as quietly as she could. “I didn’t mean to stay so late.”
“It’s alright, I think we both needed the sleep,” he said. Lily nodded a little in response and stood, picking her shoes up and sneaking to the door. “See you later.”
With half of a wave, she’d left, a small smile tugging at her mouth at the snores coming from behind James’ drapes.
The second time had also been an accident. Sirius had invited her up for a game of Exploding Snap and some smuggled-in firewhisky, and, as things often did when Sirius was involved, it had quickly gotten out of hand. This time, it was Sirius’ bed she’d fallen asleep in. She was wasted and exhausted, and he’d offered.
The next morning she’d awoken with a terrible headache and James smirking down at them from the foot of Sirius’ bed, toothbrush hanging crookedly from his mouth. Although Sirius grumbled sleepily in protest, she’d quickly disentangled herself from him and pushed past the smirking Quidditch Captain with as much faux-contempt as she could muster on so little sleep.
This time, however, Lily could not say she was entirely innocent.
She’d had a nightmare. The kind of nightmare that left her shaking and hot; flashes of green and too-real screams. Not wanting to wake her friends up, the redhead had gingerly crept from their room and down the stairs to the Common Room. Pulling her robe tighter, she plopped down onto the couch and opened the book sitting on the table—275 Practical Uses for Pepperup Potion: The Broke Witch’s Guide to Getting By—to peruse the table of contents. Perfect, this will put me right back to sleep.
“Alright, Evans?”
Jumping at the voice directly over her shoulder, Lily turned to glare half-heartedly at the dark-haired man reading over her shoulder. James Potter squinted at the text with a small frown.
“Why are you reading about potions at 3am?” he teased.
“I could ask you the same question,” she answered, continuing to peruse the book leisurely. James plopped down opposite her and raised an eyebrow. She sighed. “I had a nightmare.”
“Hate to break it to you, but Pepperup Potions don’t help with insomnia,” he quipped after a long moment.
“Maybe not, but did you know that it can ‘stand in for three meals a week without any provable side-effects?’” Lily grinned from over the top of the large book.
“Bullshit.”
“Excuse me,” she gasped, clutching the book to her chest in fake-indignation, “are you questioning The Broke Witch’s Guide to Getting By?”
“Even if you could—which you can’t—why would anyone drink Pepperup Potion instead of eating? It’s dreadful,” he said.
“Clearly, you just don’t have a refined palate,” she sniffed. A pillow soared through the air and hit her square in the face. Laughing, she chucked it back at him. He caught it with ease, the corners of his mouth upturned slightly at the sight of her. “Alright, alright, I take it back. I had no idea you were so sensitive about it.”
“I’ll have you know that I am renowned far and wide for my good taste,” he said, running a hand through his already tousled hair and propping his feet up on the table between them.
“Chugging firewhisky doesn’t make you a sommelier, James,” Lily laughed. He perked up a little at the use of his first name, his small smile growing into a crooked grin.
“Not with that attitude.”
After a moment of comfortable silence he stood, pushed his glasses up, and held a hand out to her. She frowned, looking up at him.
“Well, are you coming?” he asked. “You can’t stay up all night, and you certainly can’t sleep down here.”
“So forward, Potter.”
He rolled his eyes, but she didn’t miss the faint blush that crept up his neck and kissed the tops of his ears.
“I’ll sleep on the floor if it makes you feel better. Besides, it wouldn’t exactly be the first night you’ve spent in our dorm,” he said. Lily examined him for a long moment, and his hand had just begun to droop when she snapped the book shut and dropped it back onto the table. As she stood, her hand slid into his. His palms were calloused, she assumed from years of Quidditch—now is not the time to think of Potter and his broomstick—and she had to fight to ignore the electricity that pulsed from the warm skin of his hand into her fingertips. The contact was gone as soon as it arrived, and the redhead wasn’t sure if it was relief or disappointment that bloomed in the pit of her stomach.
“Right. C’mon then, Evans,” James breathed after a moment, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he swallowed hard. He turned and began towards the stairs. Green eyes stuck to the muscles of his back beneath his thin shirt for only a moment before she forced herself into motion, following him. It was innocent, and she knew it. And yet, there was something about following James Potter up to his room at an ungodly hour that made lightning crackle through Lily’s veins.
They reached the top and the brunet eased the door open gently, just enough for them to slip inside. He grabbed one of the pillows from his bed, and was about to drop it on the ground when she sent him a withering look. He cocked an eyebrow.
“I’m not making you sleep on the floor,” she whispered. Sirius’ snores stuttered and they both froze. When they restarted, she turned back to him.
“It’s fine,” he mouthed overenthusiastically.
Lily reached down and pulled the covers back, pointing meaningfully between him and the bed. He smirked crookedly and held his hands up in defeat, putting the pillow back in place next to its twin. Pulling her curls loose and letting her robe fall to the floor, she slid carefully between the red and gold sheets, their shoulders bumping as he joined her. It was a tight fit, for sure, but somehow it didn’t bother her to be so close to him. There was something very intimate about the situation; wrapped in a smell that was so distinctly him, the bare skin of their arms brushing slightly with every movement.
“G’night, Evans,” James murmured after a moment, his eyes already dropping shut. She swallowed hard and nodded, shifting slightly in an attempt to get comfortable. Just as she had begun to relax, an ungodly snort emanated from Sirius’ bed. At first, Lily jumped, startled by the loud noise. Then, her shoulders began to shake, and she had to cover her mouth to keep from laughing out loud. She turned to see James, staring wide-eyed up at the ceiling, the corner of his mouth quivering from effort to keep silent. They met eyes, and Lily knew it was over. James cracked, a sputtering laugh escaping from between his tightly-pressed lips. In horror, he smacked his hand over his mouth, which only made Lily want to laugh more. Desperately, she shoved her face in the crook of his shoulder, rolling onto her side. His hand moved to her back reflexively, as if to stop them from rolling off the bed while the earthquake of their shared laughter jostled them closer to the edge. It surprised Lily how natural this felt to her: the two of them pressed together in bed, his hand on her back. A strange feeling squirmed in her gut.
The shaking of her shoulders subsided and she realized just how close they were when she lifted her face and found herself only inches from his. Warm breath skimmed her cheek and she worried her lower lip between white teeth; he didn’t miss this action, judging by the way his eyes bounced down to her mouth briefly.
“Sorry,” she breathed. In the darkness, she saw one of his eyebrows quirk upwards.
“For what?”
She shrugged a little, propping up onto one elbow in attempt to put some distance between them. Somehow, it seemed to bring their faces closer. Lily hovered over him for what felt like an eternity, suddenly entranced with the curve of his dark lashes, the molten gold of his eyes. The faint red marks from where his glasses typically perched on his nose. It seemed odd to her that they were there at all, considering how often the offending spectacles slid and fidgeted up and down his nose, and yet there they were. She found their very existence intriguing and somehow charming.
Without thinking, she found her eyes drifting down to his mouth. It was then she realized he had said something.
“What?” she asked after a moment. He chuckled.
“I said, ‘the longer you look at me like that, the bigger my ego gets.’”
“Like what?” she frowned. In lieu of answering, James batted his eyelashes and puckered his lips cartoonishly before breaking into a wide grin. Lily rolled her eyes half-heartedly, grateful it was dark so he wouldn’t see the pink tinge in her cheeks, and swatted his arm.
“Shove off, Potter.”
“Excuse me, Evans, but you are the one in my bed,” he laughed, eyebrows raised in fake shock.
“You know, the Common Room couches are sounding more appealing by the minute,” she said, sitting up and moving to stand. He caught her arm and she stilled. Turning back, she was surprised to see that he’d sat up and was once again only inches away. Silently, he let go of her arm, his hand moving instead to tuck a dark curl behind her ear. Feeling like her heart was going to burst from her chest, Lily swallowed, but found herself leaning closer to him in spite of herself. They were only a breath away now, his hazel eyes half-lidded as he regarded her. Lily felt as if she were in a fog. Fingers itching to lace themselves in his raven hair, she moved to close the gap between them, their lips finally—
A loud snore shook them from their stupor and Lily pulled back, face hot.
“We should probably get some sleep,” James said after a moment. She nodded, sliding back down onto the pillow and under the covers.
“Good night, James,” she whispered, shaky fingers clutching the sheets. Her mind raced, trying to process what had just happened—rather, almost happened—and why a part of her was disappointed that it hadn’t.
Once Lily’s breathing evened out, and she found solace in sleep, James’ eyes drifted from the painted stars on the ceiling to the constellations of her freckles. It had never occurred to him that they continued across her shoulders. A part of him wondered if they continued down her stomach, if galaxies painted her spine all the way down. Forcing the image from his mind, he turned away from her, back to the starry ceiling that he’d found captivating as a child. Now, they seemed to pale in comparison to her. He sighed a little. Allowing himself to relax next to her, he relished the warmth that radiated from her arm. James Potter drifted off to sleep, where he dreamt of galaxies, and fields of lilies nestled at the feet of emerald-green forests. Before the blissful quiet of sleep overtook him, he murmured to the woman next to him, even though he knew she could no longer hear him.
“Night, love.”

Remus' POV:
" So, Remmy boy, when are you going to ask-"
" I'm not going to and you know why Sirius now drop it." I cut him off bluntly as I clenched my jaw from behind my book where I sat on my bed in our dorm. Sirius made it a daily occurrence to ask the same irritating question. 'Remus, when are you going to ask out Y/N Van Helsing?' She was a girl in our year, a Gryffindor too. Dare I say it I had had a crush on her since I first laid eyes on her, seven years ago. Beautiful, smart, funny, need I go on? The only problem was that I couldn't be with her. It just wouldn't work. I mean just take one look at her surname, Van Helsing. It screams trouble for me, notorious, infamous monster/beast hunters. Y/N didn't like telling people about her personal home life, the only things we knew that was certain fact was that she was a half-blood. That was it, she was a big mystery to most.
I was running slightly late to History of magic as I was stuck behind in Transfiguration talking to Professor McGonagall but when I got to Professor Binns' classroom I saw all of the students stood at the back of the room instead of in their seats. I made eye contact with James and Sirius and manoeuvred my way over to them (Peter was in Herbology) " Binns' putting us into pairs for some sort of joint project," James whispered to me. Binns arose from his desk with a rolled up piece of parchment, he unrolled it and began to read off the pairs.
" Black and Snape," groans erupted from both boys as the rest of the class snickered, Binns quickly hushed everyone and told Sirius and Snape to stop complaining and get to a desk before continuing, " Evans and Potter," this time there was the sounds of triumphant cheers coming from James and a very large groan from poor Lily. A few more people were paired up before I heard: " Lupin and Van Helsing." My head snapped up in shock and I noticed Y/N just walking over to an empty desk in silence. I followed behind her and placed my bag down sitting beside her. Neither of us spoke a word as the other people were being sorted into their pairs. I felt rather awkward but Y/N looked as if she wanted to say something. I was about to ask her something when Professor Binns called for our attention. " Okay class, the project I am going to be asking you to do is going to do is going to involve muggle relations with the magical world through time and their knowledge of our whereabouts. A good subject I would recommended you focusing on is the muggle awareness of beasts and monsters. You may begin now in lesson." Binns stopped talking and gestured for us to start working before going to sit at his desk. Y/N went into her bag to get something and I quickly glanced around the room and made eye contact with Sirius who smirked at me wiggling his eyebrows quickly but was then hit by Snape with his book to get his attention. I chuckled slightly under my breath.
" Something funny Lupin?" Y/N's voice asked curiously from beside me.
" N-nothing," I stuttered, she shrugged slightly and then opened up her book. Hastily, I opened mine up to a section on the History of Muggles in Magic. There was a whole page on famous muggles who had been against the magical world. Matthew Hopkins the Witchfinder General, Sebastian Michaelis a grand inquisitor then as my eyes wandered down the page I spotted their name. Van Helsing- an infamous family of hunters. They hunt those that come from the magical realm, that being beings and beasts alike. The are most known for their work with Vampires but also Werewolves and other magical creatures. A less known fact about the Van Helsing family is that they played a role in towns during the 1600's to execute the accused witches. All members of the Van Helsing have been muggles- I stopped reading and looked up at Y/N. She obviously wasn't a muggle, she was one of the best witches in our year. I knew these books hadn't been updated in a while though and I highly doubt they'd let her be singled out in a school book. This passage got me thinking, if the Van Helsing's were so against the magical community then how did they manage to get a half-blood daughter. I had been sat there thinking for so long I didn't notice Professor Binns had dismissed us. I felt someone nudge my shoulder slightly, I looked up quickly and looked around the room noticing Professor Binns had left and I saw Y/N smiling slightly suppressing a laugh. Embarrassedly, I smiled feeling my cheeks heating up.
" You know Remus, if you like we could go to the library later to do some actual writing on this?" Y/N smiled shyly, Merlin she had no idea how much I wanted her to be mine.
" Y-yeah sounds good," I stumbled over my words, she smiled and walked out the classroom. As soon as the door closed I heard people behind me burst into laughter. I would know those two irritating voices anywhere.
" Y-yeah sounds good," James mocked both guys approaching me.
" Shut up James," I huffed,
" Remus, I swear if I have to put up with your sulking and pining I'll do something about it myself." Sirius said with a completely serious face,
" Y-you wouldn't dare!"
" Try me." Sirius countered in a threatening tone, " you have a week before I intervene, make it count."
The week moved along far too quickly for my liking, I had grown closer to Y/N over the week and she was opening up a bit. Even though Y/N and I had finished our project a while ago we still continued to meet up in the library and sit in a secluded area away from the librarian so we could chat. The time was drawing closer to our curfew and the library would be closing up soon. I spotted Sirius sat on a table across the room staring at me. He tapped his wrist even though the idiot didn't own a watch." U-uh so Y/N, I was wondering if perhaps y-you'd like to join me next week for adateatHogsmeade." I stuttered but finished quickly. Y/N giggled slightly. " I'd love to Remus but-" I cut her off with a hurt groan, she laughed a again and continued, " but  we're not here next week Remus, we're going home. However when we come back I would love to." She then stood up gathering her things and leaned down to peck me on the cheek before walking off. I could hear Sirius bounding over to me, his hands grabbed onto my shoulders shaking me slightly.
" I can't believe you actually did it Moony! I'm proud of you!" Sirius squealed like a child at Christmas.
It had been a while since I had last seen Y/N and I couldn't wait to see her again. I looked around the Great Hall from where I was sat with the guys trying to spot Y/N on the Gryffindor table but I couldn't see her. Odd, where could she be? When we got back to the common room I still hadn't seen her at all.
The next morning I arrived fairly early to the Great Hall as I usually did. I watched as people filtered in and out but still no Y/N. Potions was my first lesson with Slughorn and I knew Y/N was in that lesson and she definitely wasn't the kind of person to skip a class. For the first five minutes of the lesson I was wrong but then the door opened and in walked Y/N sinking into her seat at the back. Her skin was a ghostly white colour and her tired state was worryingly apparent. I could tell she was avoiding my eye as I stared at her trying to get her attention. At the end of the lesson once we were dismissed I attempted to catch up with Y/N but she was too quick out the door. This went on for weeks and it was breaking me. I kept seeing her slowly getting worse. She wasn't eating properly and damaging herself in the process and I couldn't do anything. " Lily, could I ask a favour of you?" I asked Lily politely.
" Of course Remus, what is it?" Lily chirped.
" I'd like you to help me get up to the girls' dorms to see Y/N. She's avoiding me and is in a terrible state and I can't just sit back and do nothing!" I started ranting slightly brushing my hand through my hair. Lily looked up at me with a look of admiration on her face.
" You really love her don't you?" She asked quietly, I simply nodded, " of course I'll help Remus, she really hasn't been herself recently."
I made my way up to Y/N's dorm, cautiously I pushed open the door and saw four empty beds. In the fifth however I saw a shaking figure. Quietly, I approached her and sat down on the bed. Her head snapped up instantly, she relaxed slightly when she noticed it was me. " Remus you can't be up here. You need to go." I shook my head.
" Not until you tell me what's going on."
" There's nothing going on Remus."
" Do you really expect me to believe that? Let's narrow it down, why have you been ignoring me?"
" I have to Remus, he'll hurt you otherwise," Y/N sobbed.
" Who?"
" My father!"
" Why?"
" Because he doesn't want me dating a werewolf." Y/N muttered into her pillow.
" How does he-"
" He could smell a werewolf from a mile away Remus. This is why I hadn't tried to talk to you before. Considering we had a project I thought I'd try and risk it, see if he noticed. He did and was harsher than I first thought he'd be." Y/N continued to cry quietly.
" W-wait, you knew? A-all along?"
" Remus, I'm a Van Helsing I knew from the moment I saw you."
" And you still-" she cut me off saying,
" I've seen worse creatures than you Remus, trust me. My father won't stop hurting me for what I am. I never really get time to myself except from when I'm at Hogwarts." She said dryly. We stayed silent for a while. I was letting this new found information sink in.
" Come with me then." I said confidently.
" What are you talking about Remus?"
" Come and stay with me and my family. They won't mind I'm certain of it."
" I can't Remus, my father would come," Y/N sighed.
" Let him," I challenged, " my father works for the ministry, he has friends in different departments I'm sure we can help you! Please just do it, I love you too much to just let you be hurt." I accidently let slip. I felt my cheeks heat up from my declaration. Y/N slowly sat up looking me straight in the eyes.
" You mean it?"
" Of course." With that we both leaned into one another and shared a sweet kiss,
" I love you too." After that we never looked back.

Diamonds Are A Boy’s Best Friend Chapter 21
When I walked in the house, after being gone for hours, I wasn’t surprised to hear my father call out requesting for my presence in the dining room.  Sighing and hoping that I could keep the soup and crackers down, I complied.  He and Lily were finishing their dinner in, and I leaned against the door frame waiting for him to goad me.
“You look oddly rested.”  He was chewing with his mouth open and I wanted to vomit for a different reason than whatever bug I was afflicted with.  “Odd, considering you spent the entire day in a room with Isaac.”
I sighed loud and dramatically.  “Here we go again.”  I glared at him, ignoring Lily entirely.  “I look rested, because I am rested.”  Shaking my head and keeping my eyes locked on his.  “Not everything I do is sexual, Father.”
He was smirking and studying me.  “Considering your self created extra ‘lessons’, you would have to understand my assumptions are well founded.”  I rolled my eyes.  Of course she’d told him all about that.  “If not sex, then what were you doing in that room, Liz?”
I crossed my arms over my chest, my purse still in my hand with the medication the doctor prescribed inside.  “You tell me, you know everything.”
“Not sex.  You’ve been sick.”  His grin grew, and he took a last bite of his food and ate with relish.  “A doctor visited, which Ike rushed out for while his pet maid kept you under careful watch.”  He truly did know everything.  “Did you take a test today, darling daughter?”
“Again, you know everything, you tell me.”  I was bored with this entire game. With him.  With Lily.  “If I took a test, let’s just say I’m very certain the outcome isn’t what you’re hoping for.”
My father nodded like he was humoring me.  “You’re quite certain about that, Elizabeth?”  I watched him, looking for signs of why he’d be picking this particular hill to take his stand on.  “Are you so clever in your fucking around with random men that you KNOW for sure that the test is gonna come out the way you think?”
I felt a chill run through me.  “A brat or two-”  I shook my head.  “Stacking the deck, that seems to be your way.”  He was studying me as I thought about how he could have done it, how he could have made certain that the pill wouldn’t work.  “You horrible-” My eyes landed on Lily.  “How dare you.”
“Now, now.”  My father again.  “Lily’s making sure that my plan works flawlessly.”  I shook my head at the utter betrayal.  “I told you to remember who you belonged to, Liz.”
“Perhaps I should call my bubbe?”  I felt the thrill of a well placed shot when he stopped talking.  “Sy, right, Lily?”  And a second one as he glared at her.  “I’m sure the operator will have no problems patching me through.”  Before I stalked away, I let the ice I felt flowing through my veins come through in my parting shot.  “Never, for one instant, imagine that I wouldn’t call him up and tell him about your little threat, FATHER.  And neither of you-”  I took a deep breath.  “Ever assume that I’ll share another sliver of information about me, Ike, or what I do behind closed doors with him.”
I’d hoped, after a long warm bath and tucking myself into my locked room, that I’d feel like dealing with the truth of my current predicament.  Somehow, and I was willing to suspect Lily had a hand in it, he’d replaced the pill with something else.  Something ineffective.  Something to push Ike and I more firmly together.
I replayed conversations with Lily and I shook my head.  Didn’t she pound the idea that I could give Ike the children Vera couldn’t.  Hadn’t she tried to make it a selling point?  And stupid me, during a moment while we were shopping admitted that I had a way to make sure it didn’t happen to me until I wanted it to. All she would have had to do was find them, and they weren’t hidden, why would I hide my own things in my own room?  Once again, I’d been out-gamed by two expert level players.
I was probably pregnant with Ike’s baby.  Not probably, definitely.  I’d smugly allowed him to-  I couldn’t think about that now.  I had to decide what to do now.
Drifting off to sleep, I wondered what he was doing, and prayed it wasn’t Vera.
I woke up and ran for the bathroom, sad but resigned to the fact that I wasn’t going to get to keep the soup after all.  It was morning, and I had rested, but this-  I flushed the toilet and stood up shakily.  This was for the birds.  Brushing my teeth, rinsing my mouth out, I got ready for the day.  Hair up, makeup minimal, and one of my signature black dresses and shoes, and down the stairs I went.  I hoped that the kitchen was stocked with something soothing for my stomach, since the doctor wasn’t certain the medication would work for what truly ailed me.
“Liz,” it was Lily’s voice, but I ignored her and kept moving.  “Come on, you can’t ignore me forever.”
Well, let’s find out, I thought and kept walking.  She caught up easily, damn her longer legs and the fact that she hadn’t just vacated her stomach into the toilet.  I sighed, but kept my progress.  Maybe soda crackers, since the ones Ike’s kitchen had served were saltines.
“You have to understand,” she was saying, but I kept my eyes ahead, a goal in mind.  “He won’t kill you, Liz, but I’m fair game.”  Why’d you marry him, I wanted to ask, but didn’t.  “Having Ike’s baby isn’t torture, but what he would do to me-”
I’d had enough, she was right, I couldn’t ignore her forever, but I could try to make her understand that I didn’t care about her fate.  “And who chose to do something that had the possibility of this horrible fate that could befall you?”  She was shocked when I stopped so she ended up in front of me.  “You knew who and what he was, Lily.  You chose to marry him.  You chose to go along for the ride.”  She was staring at me like she hadn’t expected me to speak, or to tell the truth to her face.  “You did what you did, knowing full well what the consequences were if you were caught, so don’t tell me that giving me up on a platter was for anything other than saving your ass and throwing mine down a well.”
I brushed past her and finally made it to the kitchen.  I asked one of the women if there were any soda crackers and they found a tin, sighing gratefully, I took it and turned to leave.  Lily was standing in my way.
“Someone’s blackmailing him.”  I waited, not caring but seeing she thought I would.  Why would I give a rat’s ass about someone extorting my father.  “Not him, HIM.”  Stevie?  “There was proof, he was supposed to destroy it, and now-”
“And now, what?”  I opened the tin and took out one of the bland crackers, biting into it, I chewed carefully and swallowed.  “What do you want me to do?”
“Call Sy.”  She whispered, and I glanced behind us to see that the women had flicked on the radio so they couldn’t hear us.  Or could pretend they didn’t.  “Call him and tell him what Ben said to you.”  I waited to see why she refused to tell him about her own issues and wondered why he hadn’t come before, as she’d told me she thought he would.  “I tried.  He doesn’t care.  About me, anyway.”
“How would him coming to my rescue help you?”  I took another bite, happy that so far the bland, tasteless thing stayed down.
“You’ve never seen Ben around Sy, he doesn’t make waves, he’s careful.”  I wanted more information, even if I did want to meet my grandfather.  “Please?”
“I’ll think about it.”  I walked back upstairs with my tin, not inviting her to join me because those days were long gone.
When I ventured back downstairs, happy to have found that soda crackers seemed to be the answer, I found my father practically crowing about something.  I nearly went back up, but he saw me when he came out into the hallway.
“Liz,” he gestured for me to come to him and I was close to screaming at him.  “Come here, I won’t bite.”
“What do you want?”  I asked, taking the seat he’d offered me when I was sick on my stomach.
He sat in his pseudo throne and I waited.  This lord on high act was getting old.  “Isaac had to make a trip to visit the State’s Attorney.”  I felt myself pale.  “Oh, come now, Liz, why would you worry?”
“I can’t imagine that visiting the State’s Attorney is never a sign of happiness and prosperity, Father.”  My hands were tightly clasped, and I waited, even though I had a million questions.
“Probably not,” he nodded.  “I mean, can you imagine if word got out that Ike Evans, the King of the Miramar was called in by the authorities?”  He was so damn gleeful that I wanted to toss one of the crystal ashtrays at his head.  “You might want to check on him, who knows how frayed his nerves are.”
I sighed and stood.  “Is that all?”  He nodded.  “Good, I need to go see if the kitchen has more soda crackers.”
“Your mother swore by seltzer water.  She said the bubbles calmed it.”  An oddly helpful suggestion.  “She couldn’t stand the sight or smell of food for months when she-”  He stopped, and offered a different smile, the same one he had upstairs while looking at our family photo.  “If they’re out of crackers, tell them to restock.”  I nodded and left, thinking my father had such strange shifts in his mood that it was like living in a pendulum clock.
Vera called while I was in my room resting.  I heard a soft knock and then Lily quietly told me I had a call.  “Hello?”  I put down the book I’d been falling into, smiling at my roses and hoping that it was Ike.
“Liz,” I shut my eyes and took a beat.  “I was hoping you’d join me for dinner.  Ike’s so busy, I thought we could have a girls’ night.”
“I wish I could, Vera,” I took a deep breath.  “I’ve been under the weather, though, and I’d hate to give it to you.  Or Lauren.”
“Oh.”  She sounded disappointed, and I could hear what sounded like turning pages on her end.  “I’m sorry you’re not feeling well.  Another time?”
“Of course,” I opened my eyes and Ike’s roses looked like a scarlet letter.  “I’ll tell you when this bug is gone.”  Around nine months from now, I thought, feeling my nerves fray.  “Have a good evening, Vera.”
“You too, goodbye.”
I hung up the phone and settled back into my pillow.  Ike was busy.  Vera was lonely.  Lily was frightened.  I couldn’t handle another bit of stress.
The next afternoon, when I ventured downstairs on my new routine second trip, my father called me into the den again.
“Elizabeth, I’m going to have to ask you to spend the evening at the Miramar.”  I opened my mouth to argue, but he stopped me.  “I’m having a get together, and I think the noise would keep you from resting.”  I didn’t believe him, not caring about my rest anyway.  “Pack an overnight bag, and I’ll have Al take you and stay at the hotel to make sure you’re comfortable.”
“Fine.”  I didn’t feel like arguing and it gave me a reason to see Ike.  “I’ll go pack my bag.”
“And, sweetheart?”  I glanced back at him.  “Have a nice, restful, quiet night.”  It would have sounded like well wishes from another father, but out of his mouth, it sounded vaguely threatening.
“I’s like to check in, please," I sighed to the front desk agent.  As he was gathering my key and I was signing the paperwork, I heard a voice call out my name that I wasn’t expecting.
“Miss Diamond,” I turned and saw Meg Bannock smiling and walking toward me.  “Are you a frequent guest here?”  Curiosity killed the cat, I wanted to warn, but instead I smiled back.
“Hello again, Miss Bannock.”  I took the key from the worker, and turned, handing it off to Al.  “Could you take my bag up, please?  I'll follow in a moment.”  He nodded and shot a look at Meg.  “No, I’ve only stayed here one other time.”  A memorable time, that probably played a huge role in my current predicament.  “Another meeting with Ike?”
She nodded, “yes, business, it never ends.”  I wondered if she actually worked, or did anything other than counted piles of money.  “Call me ‘Meg’, though, I insist.”  Great, I would have to offer her the same courtesy.
“Liz.”  It was Ike’s voice that offered it, not mine.  “I thought you’d left, Meg.”  She was smiling at him like she owned him, and a glance at his cheek told me why.
“Oh, you have a little,” and she reached over and wiped her brand from his dimple.  “Sorry about that.  I was on my way out when I caught sight of Liz.”
His eyes were back on me, clearly wondering why I was checking in.  “My father’s having a party and he felt that I should come here so I wouldn’t be disturbed.”
“Disturbed?”  Meg Bannock, font of wonder.  “Why would a party disturb you?”
“Liz hasn’t been feeling well,” Ike again, answering as though he owned me.  “I’m sure Ben wanted to make sure she could rest.”
“I’m sorry to hear that,” she was staring at me with what I had to assume was faked concern.  “Don’t let us keep you, Liz.”  And I was dismissed.
“Yes, well, I’ll go make sure Al didn’t toss my bag onto the balcony.”  And without a goodbye for him or her, I made my way to the bank of elevators and entered the first one that opened.
Al was waiting inside my room, the door propped open a crack for me to enter.  “Thank you for bringing my case up.”  He nodded, and gave me a half smile.  “Could you do me another favor?”  I handed him cash from my purse.  “I need soda crackers, NOT saltines, and seltzer water, please?”  He looked at the money and shook his head.  Tucking it back into my hands, he moved for the door.
“The boss told me to take care of you, Miss Diamond, that’s what I’ll do.”  I hoped that meant he was off to get my crackers and water.
When a knock came a few moments later, I assumed he was back.  I opened it and found Ike, looking like he had an explanation locked and loaded.  “Come in, Ike.”  I was already tired of this day and it wasn’t even two o’clock.  I walked ahead of him and was thankful he wasn’t reaching for me.  He was learning.
“Liz,” I was about to take a seat in the chair, but he stopped me.  “Shouldn't you lie down?”  I huffed out a laugh.  “You look exhausted, sweetheart.”
“I am,” I admitted, and kicking off my shoes, I pulled down the blankets and crawled in.  “Let’s hear it.”  He smiled.
“You don’t sound as angry as you looked downstairs.”
“I’m not,” I rolled my head on the pillow to get comfortable.  “I’m sure there’s an innocent explanation for why her lipstick was on your cheek.  And since it wasn’t on your mouth, I’m reserving judgement.”  His smile grew.  “Although, if she ever dismisses me again as though I’m beneath her-” his eyes widened.  “I’ll have to remind her of what family I came from.”  A warning, through and through.
He shook his head and sat in the chair I had been planning on taking.  I watched as he took off his shoes then stood up and took off his jacket to lay it across the back.  Then he loosened his tie, and crawled into bed behind me.  His arms went around me like he was made to hold me, and he sighed into my hair.
“She came to tell me that she wasn’t willing to invest.”  I nodded.  “The lipstick came from her goodbye, it wasn’t even full lips on cheek, I swear.”  I knew that, I’d seen it, but I let him go on.  “Meg is used to everyone being beneath her, Liz, I don’t even think she notices that she does it.”  My hands were covering his under my breasts.  “I won’t stop you, though, if you bite back.”  I smiled.
“She wouldn’t give you the money for Ben?”  I felt him shake his head.  “How much do you need?”
“At least $100,000,” I thought about his options.  “Don’t worry, Liz.”  Easier said than done.  “Stress isn’t good for you, or the-”
“No,” I stopped him.  “We are NOT assuming anything, Ike.”  Even if I was sure he was right.  “Until the test confirms it, I am simply ill.”  I felt him chuckle.  “It’s not funny.”
“You’re stubborn.”  He kissed my temple.  “I love that.”
“I’m sure you won’t in a few years.”  My fingers were drawing patterns on the skin of his hands.  “She called me.”  He didn’t ask who, or grow stiff, he just listened.  “I hate the thought of hurting her.”
“I know,” his breath was tickling my hair.  “I don’t like it either, but I won’t keep faking a life when I can have the real thing, Liz.”
“Ben said that you were called in-”  Another sigh.  “Is it bad?”
“It could be worse.”  He offered, not exactly soothing.  “They drug a limestone quarry I own.”  I waited, knowing that a search that turned up nothing didn’t warrant a trip to the authorities.  “They found-”
“A few of my father’s art projects?”  A clever way of describing it, but it seemed that my father was proud of his reputation, so why bother hiding my knowledge of it.  He nodded.  “Why assume that you had anything to do with it?  It would be stupid to dispose of anything somewhere you own.”
“The art projects,” I could hear his smile in the way he took up my code.  “They’re former associates of Ben.  Partners.”  Damn.  “I don’t think that they think I had anything more to do with it than giving him access to the dump site.”
“They want you to turn.”  He tucked my head under his chin and rubbed my arms with his hands.  “What a mess.”
“Yes, it is.”  We heard a knock and Ike went to answer it when I told him about Al’s errand.
“I got soda crackers and I got seltzer water.”  I smiled at the goon my father had saddled me with.  “Since you appear to be well guarded,” he shot Ike a look that I didn’t want to contemplate.  “I’m heading to the Atlantis.  If you need me, call the bar.”
He waited for me to nod my agreement, then walked toward the door.“Thank you,” I called as he walked out.  “That wasn’t nearly as awkward as I thought it would be.”
Ike laughed as he brought the tin of crackers and the bottle of water to my bedside table.  “Sadly, I can’t guard your body all afternoon.”  I shook my head.  He found me a glass and brought it to join my meal for the evening.  “I’ll try to check on you before I-”
“Go home?”  I smiled sadly at the reminder that he’d be in the penthouse with Vera while I slept down here alone.  “It’s fine.”
“No, it isn’t.”  He sat down on the edge of the bed, and took my hand.  “It isn’t, but it will be, Liz.  I promise.”  Then giving me a breathtaking kiss, he moved to the chair and put back on his shoes, straightened his tie, and put his jacket over his shirt.  Drinking in my fully clothed form in bed, he shook his head.  “I really don’t want to leave you.”
“Which makes it marginally easier to let you go,” I smiled at him.  Watching him leave, I waited until the door closed to let the smile drop and my sadness from his departure roll over me.
