#OnlyOnOneNETnews: The Negros Chronicle celebrates its 50th Golden Anniversary [EXCLUSIVE]
(Prepared by Elinor Rabbit and Rhayniel Saldasal Calimpong / News and Science Correspondent of PBS Kids' News & Freelance News Writer, Reporter and Presenter of OneNETnews)
DUMAGUETE, NEGROS ORIENTAL -- One of the only longest-running weekly community provincial newspaper in Negros Oriental dubbed as The Negros Chronicle (TNC), celebrates its 50th Golden Anniversary. Founded in mid-June 1973, the ages of the Philippine Martial Law, only lasted for a year and a half of its 17-year rule, during the administrative presidency of the late Ferdinand Emmanuel Edralin Marcos Sr.
Tumblr media
To kick-off a golden anniversary celebration, Dumaguete Mayor named Felipe Antonio Ipe Remollo congratulates to TNC during a public dinner Monday night (June 12th, 2023) outside the Dumaguete Press Club (DPC) on Rizal Boulevard, Dumaguete, Negros Oriental - around few meters before Pantawan People's Park.
Following a frequency swap and a radio transfer of ownership to DYMD-FM 93.7mhz of Ultrasonic Broadcasting System Inc. (UBSi) aside their issues of propaganda, TNC's family is headed by Station Manager of DYEM-FM 96.7mhz's Bai Radio (formerly Energy FM, per current founder of independent music, talk and news FM radio station of Negros Broadcasting & Publishing Corporation or NBPC), former flagship president's founder of the DPC, and a newspaper editor & publisher named Ely P. Dejaresco.
Tumblr media
TNC's provincial newspaper company are all affiliated by the Philippine Press Institute and the National & Dumaguete Press Club.

We personally obtained an exclusive newspaper copy at 106 E.J. Blanco Drive, Brgy. Piapi, the said city and later relayed to the news stands of Hi-Top Newsmag & General Merchandise in Dr. V. Locsin Street. The newspaper tabloid costs PHP20 (around 40 cents U$D).
All of these years spent in the newspaper industry for print media are part of its historical journey like us. Numerous things have happened up to this point, both good and bad times. With a variety of fair and impartial viewpoints to the world of Negrosanon... Some pioneer of journalists, entrepreneurs and Dejaresco himself will continue making and delivering local and regional news to your traditional doorsteps in Negros Oriental that makes a bit sense of it all.
You can get a physical newspaper issue of its 50th Golden Anniversary of The Negros Chronicle. Get yours for a limited time in your nearest news stands all around the city while supplies last.
EDITOR's MESSAGE (via Rhayniel): Our generations never die in the Newspaper Industry by seeking all the truth. I am now a digital freelance person of technology to provide our own thing to do the same. From our management and staff of OneNETtv Channel and OneNETnews, Happy 50th Golden Anniversary, TNC!!!

Lyrically Speaking
I love music. I think the older I’ve become the more transparent this has become for me. It’s always been a part of my life, but I remember during my childhood, college through part of my 30s, TV was where I would mostly lose myself . It was an escape. Of course there are iconic televisions series for me during my childhood, in college, or back in time that stand out. Certainly shows like The Walton’s, Eight is Enough, Little House on the Prairie, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, The Facts of Life, Family Ties, Growing Pains, Highway to Heaven, Dallas, Dynasty, 90210, A Different World, Friends and Melrose Place all stand out. Funny enough, even though I watched plenty of shows after college/ my very early 20s (Melrose, 90210, Friends), none really stand out for me like this. Maybe Everybody Loves Raymond, only for the fact that the dynamic in the marriage between Ray and Debra, is reminiscent of the dynamic in my own marriage.
I digress. The point is, sure these shows can evoke a memory or a general feeling for me. But they are all happy, fun memories. Even if my childhood and youth was filled with abuse and neglect. This was my escape. I don’t really remember much of the abuse or neglect. I feel its effects, but remember? No. Why would I subject myself to watching something weekly or daily if I didn’t get some sort of pleasure from it? The best memories are the ones where a group of us would gather collectively so we could watch with the anticipation as a room full of banshees shrieked and swooned over how hot Jake or Dylan was. Or screamed at the TV for Ross just to tell Rachel how he felt about her already because we were all in love with him!!! Or wondering who the fuck shot JR, and why Krystal and Alexis had such huge shoulder pads and fought like trashy twits? (Yes, Dallas & Dynasty came way before, I know.)
But music is different isn’t it? It doesn’t always evoke happy memories. Maybe for someone who had an ideally happy past it would, but for me it does not. I think it’s apparent by now from the television shows listed, I’m not a millennial. As a Gen X’er born right in the middle our of generation (1972), I think it’s safe to say I’ve reached middle age. As much as it pains me to say, I’m not the person who remembers everything anymore. Although I didn’t have all my past memories with me from the beginning due to trauma in childhood, the ones I do (did) have, I was the type that would not forget. Mommy brain turned into Man brain. Sorry guys, but we’ve heard the excuse thousands of times. “I forgot.” We would think, “Sure you did.”, and we would fucking remember that time you didn’t remember something again. Til it happens to us. I say to myself with a sense of humor this must be my form of in-this life-karma being served in a big slice of humble pie. But I’m smart or considerate enough to write things down, and have learned the hard way to back them up to the cloud so I don’t miss important appointments should my calendar crash. In all this talk about forgetting, I forget where I was going in another digression. Music. Songs. Getting old, yes...
I can hear a song from my childhood and it can take me back. I can immediately say 6th grade, 1984. I can probably still remember all the words to the songs too. I may be able to recall some happy memory, a memory in my room, hearing something...
When I was a kid after I had outgrown Saturday morning cartoons, I remember that it had become the day I had to clean my room. I mean really clean it.  White glove inspection clean (seriously - my kids have it so easy) And I spent a lot of time in there. I remember having my moms old stereo in my room that was a record/LP player; a radio with an 8 track tape deck on it. This was before big boom boxes had made it to mainstream, but technology had already advanced to the cassette tape of the Walkman. But I remember listening every Saturday morning to Casey Kasem’s America’s Top 40. My favorite part of his show was The Long-Distance Dedication portion of his show where his listeners would write him poignant, heartfelt, or sweet letter about someone in their life or a hardship perhaps they themselves had been enduring. Casey would read these with such compassion where you felt like your soul was being touched through the airwaves by the velvet of his voice in the pain these people endured. And at the end of each letter they closed by asking him to play a certain song or would leave it to him. But they would send it out to someone. Maybe that’s where I learned to attach such memories, thoughts, and in times of sadness and need, turn to music. I don’t know. (You should listen to recordings of this online.)
Tumblr media
I don’t know how long I’ve been doing it, but I “think in song “. It’s the only way I know how to describe it. Gosh, I wish they were my own songs. I wish I had that ability; that talent. But no. What I mean is somewhere in my memory I have a jukebox - a storage drive so to speak of songs I don’t even realize I remember - or sometimes I even know. Sometimes a situation I have with someone, and it could be very obvious like being out with my girlfriends having a girls night with lots of laughter, wine and the song “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” will be the song I hear in my mind. It isn’t usually the song title. It’s usually lyrics that speak to me. I think I equate or attach some sort of word association to the situation or feeling I am experiencing. We had a lot of rain recently. I start singing or rather thinking The Eurythmics,
“Here comes the rain again,   falling on my head like a memory,    falling on my head like a new emotion...”
Or since I hit 39-40, I would say my theme song has been Landslide, written by Stevie Nicks and performed by Fleetwood Mac.
Oh, mirror in the sky what is love? Can the child within my heart rise above? Can I sail through the changin’ ocean tides? Can I handle the seasons of my life?
~These are questions I ask myself OFTEN.~
Well, I’ve been ‘fraid of changin’ ‘Cause I built my life around you But time makes you bolder Even children get older And I’m gettin’ older, too
Ah, take my love, take it down Oh climb a mountain and turn around And if you see my reflection in the snow covered hills Well, the landslide will bring it down
This morning Heart’s song, “Alone” came to me. I was thinking in this song. Just because of what’s been going on in my life lately.
Like I said in my “Sound of Silence” post, lyrics are so subjective. Music is an art form. Poetry is an art form. We take from it what we can relate in our own lives usually. Even though we may understand an artist may have meant X, our own interpretation can be different. That’s ok. They want to reach the masses. They want their work to resonate with you as much as it did them. We don’t have the same experiences, so why would our interpretations be the same?
If you feel color or think in song or taste experience, just let it happen. We evolve.
Now it’s time for me to turn on some music. I’ve really been enjoying Post Malone lately.

The 4 NFL teams with the most to panic about in Week 13
Tumblr media
Derek Carr doesn’t have a a win when the temperature drops below 40.
The stakes are getting higher as the playoffs approach. This week, the 49ers are tasked with trying to stop Lamar Jackson, while the Cowboys’ anti-analytics stance is costing them.
Things are starting to get real in the NFL. For the first time all season, teams can start clinching playoff berths. This week, it’s the Patriots, 49ers, and Saints. If they don’t lock down a spot this week, then it’s likely they will soon.
Other teams don’t have that kind of margin for error. A loss in any of the next four weeks could be the difference between making the postseason and getting an early vacation.
Even the best teams have something to worry about, though. The Patriots are 10-1, but they still haven’t figured out how to solve their offensive woes. The Texans, who are in the driver’s seat in the AFC South, have to play the Patriots — a team they’ve beaten just once in franchise history. The Saints needed a last-minute miracle to avoid another upset home loss to a lesser NFC South rival.
The Packers just got whupped by the 49ers. The 49ers have to face Lamar Jackson this week, and in turn, Jackson has to face that ferocious 49ers pass rush that just made Aaron Rodgers look like Mitchell Trubisky.
So yeah, there’s a lot of panic to go around the league. Here’s who we’re focusing on this week:
Derek Carr can’t handle cold weather (and December is coming)
The Raiders put their rebuild ahead of schedule with a surprising 6-4 start that had Jon Gruden staring at a playoff berth in just his second year in Oakland. And then, facing off against a Jets team that was 1-6 against opponents with more than two wins this season, that momentum collapsed in on itself like a dying star.
New York staged a three-ring circus atop the Raiders’ playoff aspirations in Week 12, notching its biggest blowout of the year in a 34-3 pantsing that saw Gruden effectively surrender late in the third quarter and leave the last 19 minutes of the game in the hands of sentient scarecrow Mike Glennon. That knocked Oakland off its perch as a playoff team and stuck it in the middle of a four-way tie for the AFC’s sixth and final postseason berth.
Getting back to the top of that heap won’t be easy. The Raiders’ remaining schedule features two teams with winning records (the Chiefs and Titans), and two more erstwhile contenders (the Jaguars and Chargers) who’ll be tough to dispatch. Just as importantly, two of Oakland’s final five games will take place in cold weather scenarios similar to the one it dealt with in north New Jersey in Week 12 — an environment where starting quarterback Derek Carr typically struggles.
So @coachdelrio knows what he speaks of. Said Derek Carr does't like cold weather games. In games where temp is under 40 at kickoff.. here are his numbers: 0-4 152 Pass YPG 51% Comp pct TD-Int (3-4) 9 Total QBR Temps at Arrowhead will be in the 30's Sunday
— trey wingo (@wingoz) November 26, 2019
He’s going to have to shake off that ignominious history to both upset the Chiefs and return to the playoffs. He’s also got plenty to prove before anyone takes the Raiders’ AFC West title hopes seriously. Oakland only has one win this season over a team with a winning record (the Colts) and ranks outside the top 20 in both points scored and points allowed this fall. The franchise hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2002 postseason, and those numbers — and the loss to the Jets — suggest that drought won’t end in 2020.
Panic index: Oakland has restored Carr’s value as a reliable starter quarterback (weather be damned), revitalized 2018’s league-worst pass rush, and has already matched its preseason over/under line for wins. Gruden’s second season will be viewed as a step forward even if Sunday’s loss to the Jets was the beginning of a collapse.
Lamar Jackson is going to be insanely tough for the 49ers to contain
The 49ers are rolling right along, handling almost everything thrown at them this season. Their lone loss came in a near-tie against the Seahawks. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is getting a lot of attention, as he should, for coaching up a relatively young defense into being one of the most feared units in the NFL.
The 49ers should also feel good about besting Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, the first game in their historically difficult three-week stretch. Unfortunately for San Francisco, next up is a challenge that no defense wants to be tasked with right now: figure out a way to stop Lamar Jackson.
Even when the Ravens lost two games this season — falling to the Chiefs and Browns in September — it didn’t feel like the opposing defense had “solved” Jackson by any means. The best way to beat these Ravens is to meet them on an off day, and that’s not something you can plan for.
The games most relevant to the 49ers’ Week 13 matchup are their two wins over Kyler Murray and the Cardinals. The Cardinals also have a quarterback who can run, but they have a lot less talent around Murray, who isn’t on Jackson’s level yet, either.
Still, Murray played pretty well against the 49ers. In those two games, the rookie threw for 391 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 101 yards and another touchdown. He had the 49ers on the ropes, with the 3-7-1 Cardinals coming up just short both times.
For a glimpse of Jackson-like plays that can beat the 49ers:
Seeing stars @K1 puts us back in the lead! pic.twitter.com/ifYHifGs9z
— Arizona Cardinals ⋈ (@AZCardinals) November 17, 2019
Panic index: There will probably never be a moment where something “clicks” and we all suddenly know to beat Lamar Jackson. Eventually, teams will adapt to some degree, but for now, he’s an unstoppable whirlwind of big plays. He takes great defensive players and makes them look like absolute trash. Most recently, Aaron Donald and the Rams’ stout defensive front stood no chance of containing him on Monday Night Football this past week.
The 49ers are sitting at 10 wins, and don’t have too much to panic about overall, especially on defense. However, Jackson’s abilities are entirely aligned to beat aggressive defenses, and the 49ers may be the most aggressive in the league.
While the 49ers are giving up the second-fewest rushing yards in the league, they’re also middle of the pack when it comes to yard per carry allowed (4.7). The Cardinals’ average rushing offense was able to take advantage of it. That means the Ravens’ top-ranked (in every category) rushing offense definitely can.
Jared Goff went the entire month without throwing a TD pass
It has been a difficult last few weeks for the Los Angeles Rams’ fourth-year quarterback. In the last three games, he’s thrown zero touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s the only starting quarterback in the league to not score any touchdowns this month, and he ranks near the bottom of the NFL in completion percentage, interceptions, passer rating, and yards per attempt in November:
It's been a particularly rough November (Weeks 10-12) for Goff. With a minimum of 15 pass attempts in that span (33 qualifying QB's), he ranks: * Comp% - 61.46% (19th) * INT - 5 (30th) * Rating - 58.9 (29th) * AY/A - 4.20 (29th) He's the only QB with 0 touchdowns.
— Bate™ (@NoPlanB_) November 26, 2019
Take a look at Goff’s numbers month-to-month this season — November was easily his worst.
September (3-1 record): 64.2 completion percentage, 1,254 yards, 6 TD, 6 INT, 82.9 passer rating, 7.3 yards per attempt, 4 fumbles (3 lost)
October (2-2 record): 57.5 completion percentage, 1,113 yards, 5 TD, 1 INT, 91.7 passer rating, 7.9 yards per attempt, 2 fumbles (1 lost)
November (1-2 record): 61.5 completion percentage, 628 yards, 0 TD 5 INT, 58.9 passer rating, 6.5 yards per attempt, 4 fumbles (1 lost)
The Rams are 1-2 in the last three games while Goff has struggled most and are just coming off their worst loss yet: a 45-6 beating from the Ravens. The Rams are now 6-5 and play in the toughest division in the loaded NFC. With upcoming games against the Seahawks, Cowboys, and 49ers, the playoffs look like a long shot at this point. But even more worrisome is what’s happening to their franchise quarterback.
Panic index: It’s been three years since the Rams drafted Goff at No. 1 overall, and he’s improved each season — until now. While the QB did lead Los Angeles to a Super Bowl just last year, his regression this season is still concerning, even if not all Goff’s fault (cough, his OL, cough).
That said, Sean McVay did wonders when he took over as head coach of the Rams. Goff threw just 5.3 yards per attempt and had five touchdowns to seven interceptions as a rookie under Jeff Fisher. Goff’s numbers skyrocketed the next two years under McVay. It’s possible that Goff’s problems won’t get fixed in December, but that doesn’t mean he’s permanently broken either. There’s still time to get him back on track, whether it’s this year or next.
The Cowboys refuse to use analytics
There’s nothing wrong with leaning on your football instincts as an NFL head coach. Even if the odds are stacked against you, sometimes it’s good to channel Han Solo and tell your assistant coach equivalent of C-3PO to pipe down with his talk of the odds.
Still, it doesn’t hurt to have all the information at your disposal when trying to make a decision. The Cowboys would rather fly blind.
During his weekly radio show appearance on 105.3 The Fan, head coach Jason Garrett said he doesn’t use in-game win probability stats to help him make decisions. That’s wild, considering Garrett is the NFL coach who most resembles a robot.
01101001 01110100 00100111 01110011 00100000 01100011 01101111 01101100 01100100 00101100 00100000 01100110 01100001 01101101 pic.twitter.com/J1QFE1MVup
— SB Nation (@SBNation) November 24, 2019
A day later, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he was fine with Garrett sticking his fingers in his ears.
“You’re dealing with averages, you’re dealing with almost theory,” Jones said. “And you’re certainly dealing with a result but it doesn’t take into account really the kinds of times when you’ve gone against every odds and made it work. I’ve had my biggest success when I’m sure analytics would have said make the other decision the other way.”
That’s fine, but the Cowboys may have had a better chance to win in Week 12 if Garrett had some analytics on his side. With just over six minutes left in the game, the Patriots had a 13-6 lead over the Cowboys, but Garrett opted for a 29-yard field goal instead of trying to convert a fourth-and-7 situation inside the red zone.
Would Garrett have made the same decision if he knew the field goal actually dropped the Cowboys probability of winning, even though it was successful? You’d certainly hope so.
Panic index: The Ravens have embraced analytics as much as any team in the NFL, and it’s working out really well for them. Statistics favor aggressiveness and no team has converted more fourth downs than Baltimore in 2019. Meanwhile, the Cowboys have been successful on just one fourth down all year and have lost four games by four points or fewer.
Garrett’s been the subject of plenty of criticism in recent years and his refusal to join the 21st century is another reason Dallas hasn’t been able to turn its ample talent into a trip to the Super Bowl.

‘Fargo’ Uses Pop Songs Better Than Any Show On Video
FX / Warner Bros..
As prestige TV proceeds to ape the conventions of theatre, a growing number of TV shows have stepped up their match once it comes to a device near and dear to my own heart — with pop music. Many of the Very Best and most talked-about displays on television do this very well: The Americans, Big Little Lies, Better Call Saul, Mr. Robot, Legion,Halt & Catch Fire. But there is one series that really does it a bit better than the rest, FX’s Fargo.
Filmmakers and showrunners utilize pop songs. The most basic objective is to immediately set a time interval — Duran Duran for its ’80s, CCR for those ’60s, Donna Summer for the ’70s, Nirvana for its ’90s, and so forth. Considerate artistswill really incorporate the audio as either a Greek chorus signaling themes that are significant or simply as a window to the lives of the characters. Or they’ll revel in the possibilities which arise when you choose a part of activity and mix it with a tune, which can elevate an otherwise flat sequence to the dizzying heights of a dance number.
Fargo, notably in its second season, has escalated in using tunes as storytelling devices, in addition to finding ways to create musical sequences that looked and sounded unbelievable on-screen. Throughout the show’ forthcoming season, I’ll be writing weekly columns dedicated to the way Fargo employs music in each episode, exploring the ways that tunes deepen (or perhaps detract from) the storyline. (I’ll also inquire into the obscure tracks which will inevitably pop up on the soundtrack, for people without ready access to Shazam.) Before that, here are five good moments from the first two seasons.
Season 1, Episode 2: Eden Ahbez, “Full Moon” Scene: Mr. Numbers and Mr. Wrench get rid of a body in an ice-covered lake.
Fargo did not really hit its stride for a series that cinematic scenes to pop music in distinctive ways until its next season. However, this incident from early in season one shows Fargo‘s flair for digging up obscure tunes and doing something subversive together. Ahbez is a cult figure who achieved his greatest triumph in 1948 when his song “Nature Boy” has been conducted by Nat King Cole, who flipped it into a No. 1 hit. “Nature Boy” was reflective of Ahbez’s proto-hippie life — he wore his hair long and grew up a Jesus beard to choose his normal garb of sandals and white robes. (Ahbez was also living beneath the “L” at the Hollywood sign all over the time which “Nature Boy” became a hit.) On his own, Ahbez recorded profoundly strange, ethereal music including his starry-eyed, spoken-word vocals, as typified by the strangely hypnotic “Full Moon.”
On paper, “Paper Moon” shouldn’t go with a spectacle where a guy his killed by two hit men. But much like the Billy Batts sequence in Goodfellas, which uses Donovan’s similarly hippie-dippy “Atlantis” while Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci celebration Frank Marino’s head in, the mix of violence and serene audio functions in a yin-yang sort of manner, conveying the pathology of people that commit horrible acts with cool efficiency.
Season 1, Episode 9: “Green Tambourine” by the Lemon Pipers
Scene: Super-criminal Lorne Malvo, posing as a dentist at Kansas City, hosts a party at his home.
“Green Tambourine,” a likably trashy bubblegum oldie which went to No. 1 in 1967 and has been the only real hit by ersatz-psych group the Lemon Pipers, could typically be an unusual choice to score a celebration scene that happens in 2007. But it’s perfectly suited for Fargo, that informs stories which take space during hyper-specific periods of time which also somehow appear to exist slightly out of time.
Lorne Malvo, particularly, seems like he could be a commodity of every year between 1989 and 1961. It is a part of the character’s life, “there really are no rules” influence on the entire world around him, represented in a small way by reviving the outdated “Green Tambourine” at a scene which takes place 40 years following the song’s original cultural instant. For Malvo, “Green Tambourine” represents normalcy and mediocrity — it’s his way of appearing like a regular individual while slyly commenting on how boring he thinks ordinary folks are.
Season 2, Episode 1: “Children Of The Sun” with Billy Thorpe
Scene: Rye Gerhardt pushes to face a quote in a diner.
In an interview with The A.V. Club, Fargo music supervisor Marguerite Phillips explained that the series’s creator Noah Hawley “wanted me to research prog rock and Krautrock” as a musical motif for the next season. Though I prefer to believe that it’s also regarding the pervasiveness of AOR this could be related to the year’s sci-fi overtones. (As a native midwesterner born in 1977, a number of my earliest memories have been scored by pomp-rock riffs and ridiculously wiggy keyboard solos.)
Apparently, Billy Thorpe’s anthemic “Children Of The Sun” was among those very few songs ever written to the script of the second-season premiere. While mostly forgotten now, Thorpe did exist around the periphery of FM radio from the late night ’70s, that gave him sufficient exposure for the Australian rocker’s 1979 concept listing Kids Of The Sun to hit the top 40 in the album chart. In addition to subtly foreshadowing the preponderance of UFOs at Fargo‘s sophomore year, “Children Of The Sun” seems like the sort of song you’d hear in the radio late at night whilst riding shotgun on a lonely street road near the edge of Minnesota and North Dakota in 1979.
Season 2, Episode 7: Lisa Hannigan, “Danny Boy”
Scene: Bear Gerhardt implements his niece, Simone
The biggest hurdle for Fargo the TV series has been overcoming comparisons to Fargo the film. A show that was confident would have worked to play down the Coens’ influence. However, Fargo has rather embraced not only its cinematic supply material but the entire Coen brothers oeuvre, though in a manner that’s more reminiscent of an inventive remix than a slavish cover. In the next season, this interpreted musically by having modern artists perform versions of classic tunes related to Coen brothers movies, such as Blitzen Trapper’s shoot the normal “I’m A Man Of Constant Sorrow” (out of O Brother Where Art Thou) and White Denim’s redux of Kenny Rogers and The First Edition’s “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Is In)” (in The Big Lebowski).
In the case of “Danny Boy,” which initially uttered the remarkable shoot-out series from Miller’s Crossing, the Irish singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan was called on to execute a distinctively lovely rendition for arguably the most funniest scene at either season of Fargo. For a callback to the Coens, “Danny Boy” stands alone as a memorable audio queue on Fargo. It might, in fact, even top Miller’s Crossing, where the use of “Danny Boy” enrolls as marginally jokey. But on Fargo, the song’s sentimental depiction of familial love and the death of generations gets the death of Simone doubly awful.
Season 2, Episode 10: Black Sabbath, “War Pigs”
Scene: Everything goes to hell in Sioux Falls.
Here we’ve got a tune that strikes on every one of the bases for tune usage that is good. It’s a strong personality option for Hanzee — that I could easily imagine him listening to Paranoid non-stop whilst serving several tours in Vietnam. It comments on the activity. It will help to set the time and place — nothing epitomized evil in communities at the ’70s and ’80s including Black Sabbath, whose music and iconography served as shorthand for the mania from Satan worshippers that are mostly non-existentent.
But place of the and re-watch the sequence another 37 times. There’s something to be said for having a song because it seems incredible when juxtaposed against terrifying action that’s unfolding on a split screen. Much like the Scorsese-esque “Locomotive Breath” chain in the next season’s seventh episode, “War Pigs” gets over on sheer cinematic audacity. It looks cool since it looks freaking cool.

GOP senator says tax cuts must be followed by 'structural changes to Social Security and Medicare'

"I analyze this very differently than most," Rubio said. "Many argue that you can't cut taxes because it will drive up the deficit. But we have to do two things. We have to generate economic growth which generates revenue, while reducing spending. That will mean instituting structural changes to Social Security and Medicare for the future." He suggested reducing benefits and raising the retirement age for future retirees, so people can prepare for the changes. "Tax reform is the economic component of this equation," Rubio said. "When more people are working, there are more taxpayers and more revenue, but that alone won't be enough. You are still going to have a debt problem in the absence of spending cuts."
The broadly unpopular tax bill — rushed through with almost no debate or expert testimony and zero Democratic input — would have wide-ranging and uncertain effects on all Americans. As AARP noted, the legislation already includes $25 million in automatic Medicare cuts for next year alone, along with $111 million in other cuts to federal programs, and it would either raise taxes or keep them the same for 6.3 million Americans 65 or older in 2019 and 10.8 million by 2027. President Trump, who is pushing the legislation hard, promised during the campaign he would not change Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security. You can watch Rubio's invertivew at Politico. For months before The Washington Postblew her cover story on Monday, Jaime Phillips, using a variety of aliases, had been networking with reporters in Washington, D.C., and New York City, trying to strike up friendships and sometimes surreptitiously videotaping conversations, The Washington Post detailed on Wednesday. Phillips appears to work for Project Veritas, which uses selectively edited secret video to target media organizations and liberal groups. The Post busted her trying to pass of a fake story about an affair with GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore, with the evident aim of discrediting the women who have accused Moore of sexual misconduct.
After announcing in a GoFundMe campaign that she was leaving Georgia to help take down the "liberal MSM" in New York, Phillips deleted her conservative social media history (her Twitter handle for a while was "Jaime❤PresidentTrump"), the Post says, and began populating her accounts with posts in favor of gun control and critical of President Trump, photos of John F. Kennedy, and quotes about love making America great. In July, she began showing up at farewell parties for Washington Post staffers and meet-ups with journalists or progressive activists, while renting a room from a Democratic operative. The Postshared text messages showing her five-week attempt to befriend a reporter, including sympathy tweets over a family tragedy.
Project Veritas founder James O'Keefe declined to comment on Phillips' mingling with journalists, telling the Post, "I can't give up the identity of my sources, no more than you can disclose the identity of your anonymous sources." It's not clear what "sources" he was talking about. You can read about Phillips' undercover activities at The Washington Post, and get a taste of her social media makeover in the video below. Stephen Colbert returned to the air Wednesday after a weeklong break, and he'd noticed the changing media landscape. "I am one of the few men still allowed on television," he joked on The Late Show, pointing to NBC's firing of morning anchor Matt Lauer. "According to the chairman of NBC News, Lauer was fired due to 'inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace,'" he said, "not to be confused with appropriate sexual behavior in the workplace, because that does not exist." Colbert went through some of the salacious details of Lauer's alleged misconduct, including a tidbit from a colleague involving a sex toy and a note. "It's bad enough he gave her a sex toy, but he also gave her instructions?" he asked. "He found a way to mansplain sexual harassment."
President Trump, of course, weighed in on Twitter, saying the heads of NBC should be fired, too, "for putting out so much Fake News." Colbert couldn't take it. "Listen up, you don't get to comment," he said. "That is the pot calling the kettle at 3 a.m. and asking what she's wearing. Plus, remember the whole Billy Bush/bus thing?"
In fact, Trump is casting doubt now that it really is him bragging about grabbing women's genitalia on the Access Hollywood bus, so Colbert played the tape. "You know, when you listen to it again, it can't be him, because anybody who said that wouldn't get elected president of the United States," he said. The fact that Trump admitted he said it and apologized only made Colbert more suspicious.
Colbert also hit some happier news, the engagement of Britain's Prince Harry to American actress Meghan Markel. But he found a Trump angle there, too: "England, a word of warning. We had a cool, biracial leader for a while, too. And I can tell you, you need to savor it. Because the next princess is gonna suck." Watch below. Peter Weber

Director Ridley Scott says that once he heard the accusations of sexual misconduct made against Kevin Spacey, he knew he would have to replace the actor in his new movie,All the Money in the World.
It meant having to get Christopher Plummer on board to replace Spacey and co-stars Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg to agree to re-shoot their scenes, but it worked out, Scott told Entertainment Weekly, and he still plans on hitting the original release date of Dec. 22. "There's no time for pondering," he said. "Sometimes you've got to lay down the law. You have to!" Williams agreed with Scott's decision to replace Spacey with Plummer, saying the move sends "a message to predators — you can't get away with this anymore. Something will be done."
The scenes were redone during Thanksgiving week, reportedly at a cost of $10 million (the original budget is believed to have been around $40 million). The movie is based on the 1973 kidnapping of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty's grandson, with first Spacey, and now Plummer, playing Getty. Scott said he wasn't worried about getting all of the scenes shot again in such a short amount of time and never even dreamt of postponing the release until 2018, because he moves "like lightning." What was most important to him was not letting "one person's action affect the good work of all these other people. It's that simple." Catherine Garcia
1:23 a.m. ET
Jimmy Fallon kicked off Wednesday's Tonight Show with a pointed jab at the elephant in the room, the firing that morning of his own network's morning news star, Matt Lauer, over sexual misconduct. Well, technically Fallon began with a setup about how NBC had just rung in the holiday seasons by lighting the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Plaza. "Also getting lit tonight? The HR rep over at NBC," he deadpanned. "If you're wondering where in the world is Matt Lauer, he's probably at a bar with Charlie Rose." Rose, of course, was the top male at Lauer's CBS rival morning show before he was fired over sexual misconduct.
Fallon has a reputation for pulling punches, but the other late-night Jimmy, Jimmy Kimmel, was a little more expansive with the Lauer jokes. "This morning my wife looked at her phone and said, 'Oh my god, Matt Lauer' — which, of course, I assumed he was dead. I guess this is better, I don't know," he said. "What happens now? I mean, does he have to do an emotional interview with himself?" He also wondered if maybe fellow Today anchor Kathie Lee Gifford should stop slapping Hoda Kobt's butt on "spanky Tuesdays" — which, he proved, is a real thing.
"Of course, President Trump weighed in on this, as presidents do," Kimmel said drily. "And I'll tell you, if anyone knows about inappropriate behavior in the workplace at NBC, it's Donald J. Trump. I mean, is he aware that he's him?" Of course, Lauer wasn't Wednesday's only big media termination. Kimmel's joke about Garrison Keillor fondling an NPR tote bag fell flat, but he persisted: "Can you imagine being fired from Minnesota Public Radio? It's like having your library card revoked." Peter Weber

On Wednesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that President Trump has asked Conway, his counselor, to become the opioids czar. She will "coordinate and lead the effort from the White House" to solve the problem of opioid overdoses, which killed tens of thousands of Americans in 2016, Sessions said. He also said that state and local police departments will receive $12 million in grants and the Drug Enforcement Agency will open a field office in Louisville, Kentucky, to target opioid use in Appalachia.
Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) was in charge of a commission that handed in its final report this month with more than 60 recommendations on how to stop the opioid crisis. Conway attended many of the panel's meetings, BuzzFeed News reports, and she has also worked with other members of the administration to put together Trump's response to the epidemic. Right now, White House budget director Mick Mulvaney is the victor in the "boss fight" at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, after winning the first round of a legal fight with rival CFPB acting director Leandra English, Trevor Noah said on Wednesday's Daily Show. President Trump appointed Mulvaney to the job despite — or more likely because — Mulvaney says the CFBP, which has refunded billions of dollars to consumers from shady financial institutions, is too hard on banks, among more pointed criticism.
"They took money from banks and gave it back to the people?" Noah asked in mock outrage. "That's not how money works. Everyone knows it's: money goes into the banks, and then things happen, and then yachts." Still, "according to the Trump administration, the real victims are the banks themselves," he added, showcasing their argument, then laughing at it. "Financial institutions devastated? Trampling on capitalism? Have you seen capitalism lately? If you scroll through capitalism's Instagram feed, life is looking pretty good."
Look, by all measures, "Wall Street is already living large while so much of America is still struggling," Noah said. "And castrating the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will only make it worse. This is one of those times when I wish that there was a political hero, someone who would stand up and say, 'I'm not going to let Wall Street get away with murder!'" He played that clip, and if you think it was Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, well, watch below. Peter Weber

During an interview with a now-shuttered golf magazine, President Trump told a reporter there is "nothing in the world like first-rate pussy," the former journalist, Michael Corcoran, told The Daily Beast.
Trump made the comment after he spotted a "young socialite" eating dinner at his Florida club Mar-a-Lago, Corcoran said. Corcoran was assigned to write a profile on Trump for News Corp.'s Maximum Golf magazine in 2000, and he followed Trump around for a few days. He said he used the quote in the ending of his profile, but the magazine's editor-in-chief removed the obscenity and replaced it with "talent." Corcoran's editor, Joe Bagmann, backed up this account, telling The Daily Beast he was "asked to change the last word of the story from 'pussy.' When I refused, my top editor changed the quote."
Trump seems to have a fondness for the word, having been caught on tape bragging to former Access Hollywood host Billy Bush about groping women, being able to "grab 'em by the pussy" because he was famous, among other recorded uses. The White House did not respond to The Daily Beast's request for comment. Catherine Garcia

KRD Special Feature: Feels Good at 27-The Future of Aliw Broadcasting Corporation on it's 27th Year.
Tumblr media
May 12, 2018 marked the 27th Year of Aliw Broadcasting Corporation since it was founded in 1991 by the late Antonio Cabangon-Chua and acquired DWIZ 882 which was then known as "Sunshine City" under Philippine Broadcasting Corporation of the Elizalde’s Manila Broadcasting Company. Originally housed at the Dominga Building 2 in Makati (which now houses ALC Media subsidiaries View Magazine, Action & Fitness, Cook Magazine, Business Mirror broadsheet, Pilipino Mirror tabloid, and the legendary Philippines Graphic weekly magazine).
Upon acquisition of DWIZ, it flipped its format to News and Public Service through a 25,000 watt transmission, until it went on full-power via a 50,000-watt broadcast years later. In 1994, Home Radio Network was launched beginning with DYQC-FM 106.7 Cebu although DWCD-FM 97.9 still takes place until 1998 when the National Telecommunications Commission rejected its license renewal for Crusaders Broadcasting System as stated in a Supreme Court ruling/decision. In 1997, Aliw thru its subsidiary Insular Broadcasting Systems, Inc. (previously known as a broadcast entity throughout the 70's) acquired DWCD 97.9 and changed it's call letters to DWQZ-FM (which is a variation of its AM callsign but the meaning of the last two call letters is QuartZ), and began test broadcasts.
In 2000, DWIZ and Aliw Broadcasting Corp moved its headquarters from Dominga Building 2 to its newly-built Citystate Center building in Pasig City (also houses the corporate office and main branch of Citystate Savings Bank, an ALC sister company, as well as other ALC entities Fortune Care and Eastern Security & Investigation Agency). That same year DWQZ was christened as 97dot9 Home Radio. It started as an automated music station. In  2006 to 2009, Lanie Chan or known as "Jackie" became the main voice over of the station it also became as "The Number 1 Easy Listening Music Station" and applied it to provincial stations in Cebu, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Naga, Legazpi and General Santos. Years later, it launched a weekly programming block dubbed as 'Home Radio Variety Hits Sunday (VHS)', lifted from its daily 'Lunchout' program airs a variety of songs from the 70's to the early 2000's. (That wasn't the case of a weekly programming block when in the mid 2000's, it began its Sunday night special called 'Home Radio Presents'.)
By September 2009, Home Radio added the female jocks ending the automated era of Home Radio and formulating the 'Less talk-More Music' norm in all FM stations, beginning with their pre-recorded speils and eventually in December of the same year, they went live (it even have male jocks few years later).
In 2010, 10 Years after Home Radio was founded, It launched its station in Dagupan reaching listeners to Northern and Central portions of Luzon. It would become DWIZ 89.3 Dagupan three years later in 2013.
2014 marked the changes of Aliw Broadcasting Corp. as they signed a three year memorandum of agreement with Radio Philippines Network's Radyo Ronda Network for the expanded radio coverage nationwide on Jan. 3, 2014.
A month later on February 28, 2014, Home Radio Network ended it's easy listening music run after 14 years of its launch citing its low ratings following the launch of Easy Rock in 2009. By March 17, 2014, Home Radio reformatted as a masa station with the slogan "Natural!" thus becoming the first iteration of Home Radio Natural.
Lannie Chan who was the main voice of Home Radio Network, was replaced by Bryan Quitoriano who also became station manager, thus all of its jocks were retained with their new names based on tropical fruits.
With Home Radio Natural, it faced competition among masa stations: Bombo Radyo's Star FM, RMN's iFM, ABS-CBN's My Only Radio, GMA's Barangay FM, MBC's Love Radio and Yes! The Best, UBSI’s Energy FM and Win Radio of Manny Luzon’s One Radio Management.
By Summer 2014, Home Radio name was retired and made "Natural" the primary brand by July 2014. In August 2014, it flipped formats from Hot AC/Top 40 to full-fledged Top 40 station. The language of the station is English/Taglish  following the launch of the short-lived 'The RnB Show' of Duncan Ramos and Jimmy Bondoc.
By November 2014, Natural was reverted to Home Radio but the format is still the same with the nomenclature of the frequency occupied on all stations thus all of its jocks were dismissed.
In Summer 2015, Home Radio changed its sound and its tagline "Be You" and the Slogan "The Home of the Millennials". It was managed by former 99.5 RT jock Miguel Anzuares By the end of 2015, "Natural!" slogan was dropped and changed its slogan "The Music of Now" Braggy Braganza (who was the voice over of PTV 4, DWIZ and Home Radio and formerly of Campus Radio 97.1, DZSR Sports Radio (now Radyo Pilipinas 2) and MMDA Traffic Radio) takes over as station manager replacing Anzuares.
On March 11, 2016, Antonio Cabangon-Chua succumbs at 81. Following his death, Ms. Josephine Reyes took over the reins as President of the network, but a year later, D. Edgard Cabangon and D. Adrian Cabangon took control as Chairman/President and Vice President/General Manager, respectively.
Also in 2016, DWIZ relaunched its newly upgraded 50,000-watt transmitter in Obando, Bulacan with its 300 foot tower providing improved signal reception in the Greater Luzon Area, decomissioning the old antenna used for 25 years prior to its switch to its new antenna.
In August 2016, Home Radio Davao was relaunched with a music and news programming as 98.7 Home Radio News FM Davao. Cebu and Legazpi Stations had an attempt to its Davao station but failed in 2017.
On June 30, 2017 at 9am, Home Radio Network ended its CHR programming in order to target to a broader audience. The following day, it reinstated its easy listening programming with a playlist of the 70s, 80s, 90s and a handful of 2000s easy listening songs. With the change to easy listening format, It also changed its slogan "It Feels Good to be Home" and a jingle sung by former TV5 News Journalist Chi Bocobo/Ces Datu. Braganza was retained as station manager and became the voice of Home Radio Network.
In 2018, Aliw launched its nationwide simulcast of DWIZ program "Karambola" via DWIZ Palawan and Dagupan and Provincial Home Radio Stations except Manila thru DWIZ Manila anchored by seasoned commentators plus blogger RJ 'Thinking Pinoy' Nieto (this wasn't the first DWIZ program to go on a nationwide reach. back in 2016, DWIZ launched a weekly late-night musical & commentary program 'Pusong Pinoy' hosted by renowned singer-songwriter Ka Freddie Aguilar and Direk Chris Libroho, airs live on Sundays on the said station with replays on Wednesdays in all Home Radio provincial stations, DWIZ Dagupan & Palawan. It even followed suit with 'Pangga Ruth Abao Live!' airing early on a delayed basis in select Home Radio provincial stations, RPN-Radyo Ronda AM stations in Mindanao and via DWIZ Palawan, hours before the Live airing in Manila.)
If there is a future for Aliw Broadcasting Corp. Depending on the decision of the management It should have:
1.) The Aliw-RPN Merger after the ALC Group gets the remaining minority Government share of RPN (Aliw will be the surviving entity) 2.) RPN Radyo Ronda under Aliw will now have its Manila Flagship as Radyo Ronda 882 Manila 3.) Home Radio Network will be all easy-listening music station in all provincial stations once again since its return in 2017. 4.) DWIZ Dagupan and Palawan reverts to 893 Home Radio Dagupan and 943 Home Radio Palawan 5.) Radyo Ronda and Home Radio Networks will have a unified programming compared to today's programming. (Karambola might end up in Radyo Ronda instead of Home Radio) 6.) Home Radio will expand its operations to Baguio, Bacolod, Boracay, Laoag, Tuguegarao, Lucena, Iligan, Zamboanga to continue its reach with 979 Home Radio. 7.) Home Radio must be heard on Cignal Digital TV.
Happy 27th year to Aliw Broadcasting Corporation!
(NOTE: The contributor of this post is Carl Veluz, a good friend of the EIC/Publisher of KRD .)
