#LMK if you want any other mobility aids!

hello tumblr, i'm hoping to get some perspectives from people who use mobility aids or other visible tools for accessibility (eg. hearing aids, splints, earplugs, service/emotional support/etc animals, and anything else!). i'm writing a paper for my feminist disability studies class about how mobility aids and other access tools can serve the function of helping the user access spaces/resources, but also be used as a political tool or message. i identify as disabled myself, but i don't currently use many physical, visible tools to help my access, so I'm looking for input from those who do! some themes i'm thinking of focusing on:
normalization & fostering social familiarity and acceptance (feel free to talk about this in a positive sense, like you are glad to help normalize, or in a negative sense, like it feels like a burden)
self expression, fashion, and customization (this can include purely cosmetic adjustments as well as adding things to your access tools with an explicitly political purpose- eg stickers with political phrases or symbols)
feelings of unity/safety/support when you see other people using visible access tools
access tools as being an extension/part of the body
if you want to share your experiences/thoughts, reply to this post or dm me!
i was also looking for a specific post and i can't find it anywhere- does anyone remember a post by a younger cane user about someone coming up to them to ask them about using a cane because they thought they might need to use one but we're scared to do so?
thanks to anyone who helps in any way! feel free to reblog to spread this if you want!
edit: turning off reblogs now as i don't need anymore for my paper! anyone who contributed and wants to read it once i've finished pls lmk!

hi, i just ordered my first cane n wanted to ask some questions about how to. idk not be too self-conscious about it/handle people asking about it (esp older folks)?
ik the main thing is to just. ignore people but i struggle with not paying attention to ppl who wanna be weird/intrusive
congrats on your first cane!! i hope it’s helpful for you & you have as easy an adjustment as possible 💖 i’ve answered some similar asks in my cane user & faq tags so you might find some other relevant info there :)
there are a few things that were helpful for me when i was adjusting to new mobility aids & the ableism people often meet that with –
planning my response ahead of time. i’d often feel bad about myself for not defending myself or whatever when people asked invasive questions, but if i had a plan like “okay i’m gonna just be like ‘oh yeah i have knee problems, it’s been super helpful!’ & disengage as quickly as possible” then i didn’t feel bad about not directly addressing their ableism or whatever bc i’d already decided it wasn’t worth my time
surrounding myself with as many other mobility aid users as possible, on social media & in art & in the theory i read &, when i was able to, in person. knowing that other people are going through the same thing (& talking shit whenever possible) really helped me feel less alone
if academic writing is accessible to you, rosemarie garland-thompson’s staring: how we look is a great starting point for disability theory around this topic imo! there’s also a lot of community knowledge + theory around (hyper)visibilized disability, which has only grown more robust in the wake of ableist responses to wearing masks
in this kind of situation i firmly believe that whatever response best helps you survive in an ableist society is the right one. whether that’s cursing somebody out or pretending you didn’t hear them or pacifying them with as polite a response as possible depends on the circumstances & the people involved, & all of them have different risks. in my experience it gets easier over time to get a feel for weighing those decisions
self-care afterwards in whatever way(s) you prefer. my senior year of undergrad my go-to after an obscenely ableist class was taking my mobility scooter on a fast ride through the park next to campus, blasting an angry playlist; the best response for somebody else might be a bubble bath or getting high or gay sex or listening to a disability podcast or all of the above or something else entirely – whatever makes you feel like you have a right to exist.
i also started a (18+) bitter cripple discord server when i was overwhelmed by the ableism i was experiencing a few years ago, which @cane-you-dig-it & @autismnep now moderate, so if you or somebody reading this want to join that just shoot one of us a dm!
i hope some of that was helpful, i’m wishing you the absolute best of luck & feel free to lmk if you have any other questions! 🖤🖤

A/N:I have no IDEA how long this took for me finish because I’ve been teasing this series for a couple months with the only two teasers I mentioned of Hyunjin. Seems I have a lot of sub!Hyunjin enthusiasts because same y’all. 😩I promise to finish the Hyunjin before June ends and after that I’ll focus more on other members.

It’s been far too long since I’ve written and had any sort of inspo to write. Thanks to my dear mutual @nirvanawrites111 she gave me hella inspo with her amazing works!! I’m obsessed with her writing please go do me a favor and read her amazing stories/fics.
Also I tried to add the read more on mobile but I’m a dumbass and idk how to work tumble mobile sometimes lmao. So I apologize for anyone that will see this and doesn’t want to see it.
Tumblr media
As a result of unsuccessful relationships and partners being concerned about where she went or what she was doing, she became more secretive about her whereabouts. Even though she wanted to be honest and open with them, she hesitated on many occasions; if she were to be bold and unapologetic they would go insane and ask questions like, "Why did you choose this job out of all the others?", "Are you cheating on me?", etc.
Those tiresome scenarios were one of the reasons she was always the one that broke it off with them, and so she took it upon herself to take a break from her dating life to focus on herself.
She had a job that wasn't just any regular job.
OnlyFans? No
Camgirl? No.
A phone Sex worker? No.
Feet pics? No.
Used panties? No
For her working at night was ideal because her sleeping schedule only allowed her to be a night owl. Even before any partner appeared in her life she was still in the process of discovering a whole new part of herself that she wasn't aware existed, and here she was in a dungeon that she had been hired at over a year ago and was one of the few popular dommes among the clients.
"How are you feeling?", She stood next to the man sitting on the loveseat.
"I'm good, Mistress." He smiled at her.
"Would you like some water?" He nodded in response.
She walked towards the room next door and back to the playroom to hand him the bottle.
She crouched down to his level to face him as well to check in with him, "How are you feeling? Was it too much?", she asked curiously as to how she could improve. What she should've done is saved that question for the head domme but she didn't and took the risk.
"No. Not at all. It was perfect, I enjoyed every second of it."
He faced her smiling at him and held her hand realizing he shouldn't be doing that.
"I'm sorry...may I?" She smiled warmly at him not pulling her hands away from his grasp.
"I just wanted to say thank you."
While she had not broken skin or drawn blood, she still left a few red welts on him. She grabbed the first aid kit in the corner and treated his wounds, trying to be as gentle as possible.
"No need to thank me. You went out of your way to give it a shot when you could've easily backed out and I would've still respected your decision. BDSM isn't everyone's cup of tea and so we've learned to respect everyone's decision."
She applied a first-aid ointment to every single red mark on his back; he hissed at the lightest touch, "I'm sorry, I know it hurts I'm just trying to make sure these heal quickly and nicely."
"I know and I appreciate it."
"Done." She stood up and handed him his T-shirt. "Make sure to take a warm bath or shower after you get home and keep applying ointment on the marks afterward.
He smiled at her making his way toward the exit.
"Will do.",
She smiled at him and nodded, seeing him off.
That was one of the roughest BDSM scenes she had done in a while. She would like to take time to make sure her submissive didn't go into a sub-drop, but sadly she couldn't. If it were her, she would go out of her way to remain with every submissive for a bit longer. However, her boss had to remind her that they only came here for a service nothing more. Because of this, she couldn’t be there for more than ten to fifteen minutes with her clients after their sessions ended.
~~~~~
"See you tomorrow night!" Her boss told her as they both headed in different directions.
She silently walked for the next couple of four blocks by herself and finally got closer to her apartment. She walked up the stairs and opened the door to her place. The second she got in she took off her shoes left them at the entrance and hung her purse on the rack.
Exhausted and couldn't even begin to explain how she felt after handling four subs back to back today. It was not an ideal situation for her couldn't handle more than two subs a day because her anxiety and insecurities kept creeping back up on her.
She meditated, journaled, exercised, and even set days apart for self-care plus, she detoxed from her constant electronic use. She ate healthily and did her best to keep her homey environment clean and organized. However, regardless of what she did something inside her told her she couldn't keep doing this.
She craved something new and stable.
She loved domming but maybe because of all her ex-partner's insecurities of themselves as she hid her true identity was reflecting on herself.
Could it be that deep inside she was ashamed of her job and what she did?
Years ago when she discovered the person she truly was glowed with confidence. How could she even be a dominatrix if she wasn't sure of herself and her current job?
Oh no.
She was experiencing not only her anxieties but also a dom drop.
Telling her boss; she was fine could've been a mistake because she was responsible for taking care of her dommes since half of them didn't have a partner to take care of them.
Fuck.
~~~~~
Two years Later:
Two years and a half of learning Korean were a big help during the entire process of her moving across the world. She wasn't fluent yet but could manage conversations with her neighbors, classmates, and strangers. And so here she was, sitting inside a cafe shop a couple of blocks from the Korean class she had just finished attending.
It seemed like only yesterday, she was experiencing the worst anxiety and burnout from only a year of working as a domme which was odd considering that she had never once felt like that before. But it made sense since she kept getting the gnawing feeling that she shouldn't have gotten into the dominatrix world way too early and so she took it upon herself to resign to take time for herself; and continue her future as domme by researching more information about the career, lifestyle, and possibly a new business.
The grueling work of research, language learning, space vacancy, furniture shop, etc made her take a step back and reconsider if she could do this all by herself. Thankfully, after taking a couple of weeks to continue her research she found herself posting on an exclusive adult site looking for dommes to work with her.
After returning calls and doing interviews she had successfully found four dommes who wanted to continue their careers in the kink community and so never once she thought, that she out of all people would be involved with any of Korea's music industry. Especially the ever so sexually frustrated men of Kpop that had an image and reputation to uphold in the industry, their companies, and not to forget their fans.

i love your masterlist of places to find refs, do you have any good recs for where to find mobility aid references/poses? especially with canes and forearm crutches? i struggle so much to find them and was wondering if you'd come across any good sites for it 💖
Hi! I didn't find any specifically for poses with mobility aids, but adorkastock has at least some and @teamwarchicken seems to have a lot (comparative to other sources). If you go into their archive and filter by tag, they have one for crutches:
Tumblr media
But it only has 6 images.
They don't have a tag for wheelchairs, but under the tag "sitting" there's a fair % of them. Definitely more than 6.
Tumblr media
You can just scroll and scroll on that tag.
There was nothing for canes. I tried a couple of their 'leaning on' or 'holding' tags but didn't see any.
Overall, it doesn't look like there's a good source for reference photos with mobility aids specifically. Even a general google image search for "mobility aid references/poses" doesn't yield many results.
It looks like the best is actually to search [mobility aid you're looking for] and then filter to photo on tumblr! For example, there's TONS of pictures of people posing with their canes. However, there are also a lot of caning k!nk posts, so I wouldn't recommend it if you want to avoid occasionally seeing someone's behind. (Tried cane user but the tag wasn't popular enough to filter by photo) The tag for "mobility aid" more generally is also really good (and doesn't leave any room for uh,,,other content) and there's a lot of cute ideas for mobility aid decorations and positivity posts, which is not great if you don't want to scroll as much for your pose reference but great if you also want to see those. (Side note: need to add some cool beaded cane-bracelets to my cane ^-^)
In light of the lack of good resources for this, I've made a sideblog called @mobility-reference for this. I just made it so it doesn't have anything on it yet, but I would like it to be collaborative due to myself not having much time (the Goncharov remake + college), so anyone who likes the idea, lmk if you want to be a member.

Something I need to keep in mind while writing Viktor
Tumblr media
I hope the way I worded my thoughts is okay.
Might add stuff later on
Basically this post in general.
Post
Post concerning Viktor's personality and how we headconed him as a workaholic
Post (Please read this one)
Etiquette: Interacting with people with disabilities
Video about disability and villains
"Viktor's isolation and lack of friends as a child was not due to him being 'too smart' or 'too focused on inventing', it was due to him being disabled." "Viktor truly wants to have friends, but as a child he was given serious barriers to entry. And as an adult, his introverted habits persist due in no small part to the fact that he was looked over so much when he was little, coupled with that he does not want to burden people with his chronic health issues."
I don't want infantilize him or Sherlock-ofy him.
If writing smut keep in mind this man won't be able to do parkour with you!
While I agree that Viktor is definitely a confident man, I think it's more because of his intellect and skill rather than his body. (This is one of the biggest reasons why I relate to him so fucking much). I don't think he's necessarily insecure about/only about his disability just in general physique.
At the same time though I don't think every one-shot or smut I would write about him, should have a narrative about him being insecure about this. Like any person Viktor can be both confident and insecure depending on the day.
If you have any other ideas or tips on how to not misrepresent Viktor's character, it would be very helpful. As someone who is a able-bodied themselves, I would be very thankful to hear from disabled people and how they believe would be best to represent a disabled person in fiction: the things they find acceptable in fanfction works and things to avoid (something we able-bodied writers don't always consider).
Adding on a message from @higheverweave "Hey If you need some help from Disabillity culture perspective I can do what I can :) I mostly come from An ASD perspective But I was raised in Disabled spaces via social groups so Just lmk what you’re looking for. If I can’t answer a question directly there’s a ton of awesome folks with lived experience who talk about this stuff a lot. Main tips: • Mobility aids are counted as an extension of a persons body…. Touching a wheelchair or crutch or any medical aide without permission is like an extreme no-no. • Mostly our entire culture isn’t so much about everyone taking care of us but figuring out how to get access so we can take care of ourselves. Ex.) I have a mentor I greatly respect she’s very honest. She has Cerebral Palsy though so moving her body can be challenging. As she can’t predict what her hands will do when she is making something she has a device that she wears on her head that tracks her eye movements and she makes art uses the internet etc. using this device all still her work her thoughts her effort …. It’s just made accessible for her to enact/share. • Energy regulation is a huge thing. People with more Physical Needs and folks with Asd have a thing called spoons. It’s an odd little metaphor for burn out. But Viktor faces this on two fronts: 1) physical energy < this is going to be different for him and time in the story matters for this as well. If you watch closely you can see him lean on things…. He’s a little tired but not so tired he’s burnt out or depleted all his energy. 2) This dude I don’t know if he is 2E 2E is short for twice exceptional meaning having multiple learning accommodation needs (English second language and needing Accommodations for disability. Or on Viktor's case he is considered “gifted.” Or a “genius.” But that heavily relies on IQ which is bs because intelligence doesn’t have math it can’t be measured. IQ tests are very much a eugenics thing, so even those of us who count as gifted or geniuses know it’s a kind of BS label. There’s this price people pay in regards to twice exceptionality. The folks who are considered geniuses or smarter or whatever…. People don’t realize there’s an extreme downside to it….. if you have an idillic memory if you remember EVERYTHING you remember every insult everyone has said to you…. You remember every betrayal every fear every death every heartache intensely and it can be hard to let go. Luckily this also makes us want to try to understand others. Although most don’t understand us… The one group of people who knows how to calm us down …. Our peers with More support needs or IDD. They can see things without overthinking it and really center us back to ourselves. We need each other. A lot of that social isolation too Is also fear…. Disabled folks it used to be illegal for some of us to go out in public until 1974 re laws called Ugly laws we still get kicked out of public places sometimes if we don’t fit in or “make people uncomfortable.” So when we are trusting someone we are trusting them with the power they have over us. Automatically by default: I understand because I am autistic if somebody wanted to say i did something. I didn’t do and I denied it (They could use the idea of sanity against me to sway the argument in their favor.) To understand disability you have to understand Eugenics as a part of everyday culture. Meaning there are some people other people believe just take up space by existing… that to some leaders is a waste of money food and resources. So Their solution is how they perceive survival of the fittest. Covid is a good example when people wanted to end lockdown early there were people on the streets with signs saying sacrifice the weak. When asked about they said yeah sure it’s sad some people will die but they would die anyway so why should I sacrifice my freedom for it. People actually said this. So some of the isolation is a fear for safety as well. Hope this helps!🤍"

Hi! I don’t know if requests are open, but if not, please ignore this! Don’t overwork yourself please!
If it’s okay, can you do Viktor x reader who has iron deficiency? It was bad before I started taking iron pills, I would black out from time to time if I stood up too face from sitting or laying down and I wanted to know how he’d react to the reader blacking out and how’d he care for them!
Thank you, I hope you have a wonderful night 💛
*sweating nervously* this isn't normal? 😰 Oops. Y'all are out here unintentionally making me realize I need to be more firm with my doctor who told me it's just postural hypotension... I digress. Requests always open though. These are fun for writing warm ups 🍻
I cannot stress enough how caring Viktor is. No matter how far he is into a project, the minute you faint it is like the world stops.
He would be beating himself up for not stopping his work sooner or not noticing - or worse, he noticed and thought it wasn't a big deal until a full faint happened.
The first time any fainting happened, Viktor would drop his cane and fall too his knees, taking your face in his hands and gentley trying to wake you up as he quietly panicked. You slowly come back to waking, still unable to move as you hear him frantically muttering your name.
After a while he would almost automatically predict when a fainting spell would come on and would likely implement some kind of device to catch you either as an independent invention or an extension of his mobility aid. 10/10 could see him extend his cane, extension automatically activating, without missing a beat.
He is a little smug about his timing with a little brow wiggle. "Do you need a hand?" Proto-robot arm catching you just in time.
I've mentioned this before but Viktor is no stranger to hospitals. He would take you where you need to go off you were conscious. However, I could see a very panicked Viktor working in the lab, he hears a thump behind him and he isn't sure what it is a first. The flames of his welding torch die and he shoves his goggles up into his hair onlyto turn around to see his s/o on the floor. He grabs for his cane and launches himself up, face still caked in sweat and grease. "Y/n!" He explains as he falls to your side. But he can't lift you. He can't carry you anywhere himself. So he yells for Jayce, and silently begs for any force out in the universe to make sure Jayce hears him as he desperately does not want to leave your side.
Viktor would be so relieved after your tests came back and you were put on supplements but would 10000% have everything ready should you faint again. He really put others needs above his own, which he constantly downplays.
Oops, my hand slipped and I made it sad. Sorry! Lmk if you want more caring Viktor. 💕🍻

since you're an ambulatory wheelchair user and have used different mobility aids, would it be alright to ask the ones you currently use and in what situations you use them for your AS, such as walking in a large multifloored building
the current answer is that i’m Super Homebound lol but i used to be more mobile so i will mostly answer based on that! i’ve used a cane, axillary crutches, Smart Crutches (a brand of forearm crutches), a forearm rollator (the Gemino 30), and a mobility scooter (Pride GoGo Sport 3-wheel) for long periods of time and a standard rollator, manual transfer wheelchair, powerchair, and 4-wheel mobility scooter for shorter periods such as pre-pandemic vacations and conferences.
some stuff will differ depending on your particular pain, symptoms, etc! a big thing is in the past year and a half i’ve developed a lot more hand, wrist, elbow, and arm muscle pain, which makes using any non-motorized aids a very day-to-day or even moment-to-moment decision depending on what hurts. other than that my main AS-specific tip is stretch. stretch a lot. i have an additional sacroiliac cushion on my mobility scooter & take breaks every so often to stand and stretch my back/trunk, and while seated i stretch my neck really frequently.
for your large multifloored building example, i’d currently take my mobility scooter & would’ve taken my forearm rollator before i had that. for these i’m making the assumption that i’m being driven by someone i know or taking public transportation; if i’m taking a lyft/uber i would usually opt for smart crutches or a cane unless i would be walking too much for those at the destination because sometimes the car/trunk won’t fit my forearm rollator or disassembled scooter, and it’s a lot harder for me to lift those on my own now.
around the apartment - usually a cane, recently my smart crutches sometimes as i’ve been having more balance issues
doctor’s office - usually a cane, sometimes smart crutches
around a building (for example, i’ve been dropped off from a car and don’t have to travel between buildings) - forearm rollator
going to a store where i’ll be shopping for a relatively longer time or buying many items, going between multiple buildings, etc - mobility scooter
going to a store just to grab a couple things - forearm rollator
for somewhere with one or two stairs, i’ll take my forearm rollator and lift it or have someone lift it for me; more stairs than that, smart crutches
somewhere involving a line or a lot of standing - forearm rollator or mobility scooter so i can sit
gravel - forearm crutches
grass - anything but the rollator
steep hills - mobility scooter (note that uphill will drain the battery much faster)
i hope that helps! there are other potentially relevant posts in my “mobility aids” and “faq” tags, & feel free to lmk if there’s anything else / specific that you want to know :)
