Woven is a story about Lesbian love, connection, and the meaning we weave in our own lives. Though the Kickstarter campaign has come to a close, our GoFundMe is still active! I am still trying to raise about $200 more to cover all my costs (for a total of $1000).
I can’t do this without you guys! So if you have anything to spare, or can help out by spreading the word, I would appreciate it more than you know! Even $1 gets me closer to my goal. If you rather donate through Paypal, CashApp, or Venmo, you can DM me as well 😊
Support indie authors and help get the best version of this story out into the world. 💜

I think a gay romance novel between a roman legionary and a germanic barbarian would fix me.
I would honestly write it myself, but I have the writing skills of a 4 grader on Wattpad.

Summer was here again. Summer, summer, summer. I loved and hated summers. Summers had a logic all their own and they always brought something out in me. Summer was supposed to be about freedom and youth and no school and possibilities and adventure and exploration. Summer was a book of hope. That's why I loved and hated summers. Because they made me want to believe.

Just Stu by Merlina Garance
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this in return for an honest review.
I’m going to preface this review by saying that I don’t usually read pure romance and when Merlina reached out, I was initially sceptical but after reading the blurb I decided to give it a go – and I am so glad I did!
John, 41 and recently divorced, decides he needs a change. He leaves his ex-wife, their joint friends, and his parents back in London and moves north to Leicester. He has a bucket list of things recommended to make him a better person and so far, they aren’t going very well. Despite that he is settling in well in his new home. A last-minute invitation from his neighbours Andy and Thalia to a birthday party proves to be the chance he needs. At the party John meets Stu and they hit off immediately. Stu invites him to join a tabletop RPG that his friends are playing and John settles into this new friend group, finding himself becoming more himself as time passes.
The book is split into two parts – it opens with John having done something very stupid and seeking solace from his sister who he hadn’t spoken to in six years, before jumping back a year and a half to when he first moved to Leicester. By the time we reach that fateful October you’ve nearly forgotten what is coming. The second part deals with what has to be done after The Mistake.
John and Stu are easily likeable characters – a little bit awkward, a little bit earnest, a little bit nerdy. Stu and John’s first meeting is a little bit clumsy but nearly endearingly so, then they realise they’ve been talking for hours. It reminded me fondly of one of my best friends (who funnily enough had a secret very much like Stu and is also into RPGs).
The building of the RPG was nicely done - enough detail that you get excited but not too much that someone without any knowledge would get lost. However, the RPG group – Cassie, Claire, Xena and Sandra – are all nice enough but not fleshed out sufficiently to remember much about. I couldn’t tell you anything about the characters they play – in contrast I remember every detail of John and Stu’s characters’ storyline. I liked the RPG parts of the story and I appreciate that by focusing more on the group we would lose some of the other parts of John and Stu’s friendship but for something that is so important to their growing affection, they fall a bit flat. Xena especially – I know nothing about her at all. The game takes place at Sandra’s house, so we see a lot of them in comparison to the others. And Claire is friends with Andy and Thalia so we hear a fair bit about her also. I can think of one other time Cassie is mentioned and I couldn’t even remember Xena’s name. There’s a balance to be struck between too much and too little information and unfortunately, the author doesn’t quite get it right.
The descriptions given to John going to watch Stu’s band play are so spot on – live music is a little bit like magic and it’s hard to put into words but Merlina Garance manages it!
“The bass line Stu is playing vibrates right through him, rattling his bones and stealing the breath from his lungs.”
“His body swaying to the rhythm the bass was giving, without any conscious input, blood buzzing in his fingertips.”
Speaking of Thalia, her trust and friendship with John is my favourite part of the novel entirely. There’s a lot of focus on Thalia & John’s friendship while still bringing Stu and John closer, which I really liked. I wasn’t expecting to like Thalia so much – it was Andy I had been expecting to see more of – but Andy fell into the background and very much became ‘Thalia’s partner’ rather than the other way around. I loved the slow way Thalia and John’s friendship grew. It wasn’t rushed and didn’t feel forced. Thalia needs time and John is so considerate about that. I liked the way we saw John’s thought processes to accommodate her especially in the beginning. After finding out this is book 2 I presume we find out more about Thalia in The Flourishing but it works so well without everything being dragged out on the page. John knows but we don’t have to. (Divorcees Club is a strong runner up for my favourite part but Scone does wiggle his way in there – Skon for the record.)
Slight spoilers here but even after the romance sorts itself out there are still secrets and character growth and friendship to be had. The rest of the book didn’t peter out just because John was now in a relationship. Nor did the novel take a quick dive into smut which has ruined several other romances I’ve read before. There is nothing wrong with sex scenes, I just feel that they shouldn’t be to the detriment of the story that is being told. The author here makes perfect use of a sex scene to show us something more about the characters and their relationship with themselves as well as the other person.
One thing I was disappointed about was that other than the one place in chapter ten John’s list of things to try to improve himself were never seen outside of chapter one. John does acknowledge that people think it’s “silly, this attempt to improve himself by checking items off a list as if he was going round the supermarket isles” and maybe that was what was trying to be said here – that John didn’t need that list, that he was perfectly capable of becoming a better, happier person all on his own. However I liked the little call back in chapter ten and would’ve liked it to pop up more often – maybe John accidentally ticks off more of the things because he is becoming a happier person not the other way around.
In conclusion this book gets a solid 4.5 stars from me and I am excited to go back and read The Flourishing!
