Ishgardian 3 and their relationship with Halonic faith brainwyrms
DISCLAIMER/CW: This is deeply colored by my experience with Catholicism; one of my parents grew up Catholic and parts of that side of the family still are, but I was raised in a secular household and am now a pagan witch, go figure this has been your PSA
HAURCHEFANT
does what he must to be perceived as a good Halonic man. There is a small chapel at Dragonhead and he makes an appearance there every Sunday unless pressing matters prevent it. The ritual, the habit, is comforting to him, but he’s long since thought the Fury wasn’t listening, if She was there in the first place. But still, he tries to pray, especially for the protection of those he cares for. But he’s been hurt too much, and has seen too much of Her glorious War. He’s sick of it.
ESTINIEN
felt deeply connected to the Fury as the avatar of righteous destruction. She’s been there with him in his darkest hours, his only solace when the rage and grief are too much. Felt for years that even if he failed to avenge his family, She would ensure it was done.
The truth takes his feet out from under him. But his crisis of faith is undercut by the chaos of the death throes of the Dragonsong War: he hardly has time to process it, let alone grapple with its implications, before he’s possessed by Nidhogg. After coming back from the brink he’s left with more to think about than he can handle. This is one of the reasons he leaves Ishgard. He has So Much to process and he needs to be outside its sphere of influence to manage it. But he still prays to Her. Sometimes guiltily.
AYMERIC
has had a number done on him. Even with his parentage being only alleged for most of his life, possibly being the Archbishop’s son, born in and of sin, he was Devout in his young life to compensate. He needed to be. It was a defense mechanism.
When he was young he believed it. But as he grew, it became more and more performative, more and more the facade he put up to avoid yet another avenue of censure. Some days he still prays to Her like he used to, still feels sheltered by his faith. Some days he hates Her. How could She be said to destroy the wicked and shelter the needy when his people are starving and freezing to death? Her war takes and takes and takes and grants no succor. But still he attends mass. Like clockwork, nothing less than an attack on the city preventing him. He HAS to be seen there, HAS to be seen entering confessional even if the things he says while there aren’t, in his mind, truly sins. (Even if sometimes he relishes the act of sinning in itself, his own private, unspoken rebellion.) Even if he’s going through the motions, he persists in his performance. His reputation is ever on the edge of a knife and if it takes him playing at devotion to stay balanced, so be it.
When the truth comes out, part of him feels vindicated. Part of him feels grief. And part of him is enraged. He stops going to mass unless he actually feels called to attend (not often, but surprisingly, sometimes, standing in the back). He stops pretending. He holds his tongue, there’s no need to further damage his image when he’s already had an assassination attempt and more death threats than he cares to count, but his relationship with his faith becomes outwardly what it’s always been: deeply personal. He believes in the Fury, aye, and prays She watches over his loved ones, but he also, finally, lets himself be angry with Her. Lets himself feel the rage and indignation he’s choked down for decades. And, keep it close to the vest or not, he lets himself despise the church. What it was built on, what it puts its people through, how brainwashed and closed-minded and hateful so many of those it ensnares become. And he hopes for a better Ishgard, a better faith, and a better church, one that is more open, and loving, and kind. One befitting the age of peace he hopes to build. Even if all he can lay in his lifetime is just the first stone of the foundation of that peace, that better Ishgard, it would be enough.

Item a) lowborn recruit in the Temple Knights + Big Trauma at a young age = early reticence, bad attitude, overall Prickly
Item b) as soon as he’s like, figured shit out and started to relax all of a sudden he’s promoted to Knight Dragoon, Which means that he’s suddenly a member of the simultaneously most lauded (powerful) and reviled (bc it comes from Dragons) class of warrior in Ishgard. This only makes him put up a thicker wall, bc suddenly he has this potent cocktail of awe/loathing/pity attention from others.
Item c) THEN he gets heccn saddled with being the AZURE DRAGOON, he has the slaughterer of his people and his family’s feelings INSIDE HIS OWN HEAD, and no matter how much better adjusted he’d become, suddenly ALL of his emotional bandwidth is consumed at all times keeping Nidhogg at bay/ in check/ having to have a vise grip on his own mind to not lose himself to Nidhogg’s influence.
Small wonder the man’s curt, never shows up to social functions, and reticent, when he’s got all THAT to deal with! And then by the time he’s free of Nidhogg at last, he’s spent Years keeping his own feelings Carefully and Methodically quashed. He barely remembers HOW to process his own feelings, let alone do so in a healthy way or communicate about it.

WoL Question: How are they with kids?
Kyler doesn’t have much experience with kids & sometimes gets self-conscious around them, but he also has a protective streak a malm wide so it works out okay in the end. He has never pictured himself with a family an has a lot of family-based baggage (I wrote a ficlet about it once!), but if one of the husbands were to want it he’d certainly consider.
I think Aymeric and Haurchefant would be Very good with kids, very nurturing and protective. Estinien is secretly excellent with them, in the way of letting them get themselves into mild trouble/not coddling them so they learn how to problem solve and pick themselves up.
Estinien is secretly the dad who knows exactly what to say and how to react and the other three are like ?! And he’s like “what?” Like, he’s that dad who doesn’t react when his kid bites it so the kid picks themselves up and keeps on going
“See? They’re fine”
The other three: <sweats>
But then also when a kid hurts themselves and cries a lot, he’d talk to them like “does it hurt badly? No? It scared you? Okay, I know, buddy,” <holds them>

Excited by the prospect of attending an event where obfuscation of identity is the Whole Point & you can get away with things you normally wouldn’t

Haurchefant:
Has not had the chance to attend a masquerade before and is Extremely Excited
Has approximately two dozen ideas for outfits and has a terrible time choosing one
Loves that there’s inherently an upset in the social order, that anyone with a mask can participate
Estinien:
shocks his loves by being not only willing but interested?? In a social event?? Because it turns out that it’s not that he despises all socializing it’s the crushing weight of being known, of the role he’s meant to play and what he’s supposed to mean
Which means that not only does he go, he goes all out - using reagents to temporarily change the color of his hair, choosing a full-face mask and an outfit that exposes Zero of his skin
Completely anonymous, and because of that anonymity, completely Free
Kyler:
Is just happy to go to a party with all of them without having to worry about appearances or being seen with any or all of them
Also feels freed by wearing a mask, though he doesn’t go to the same extremes as Estinien
And now I will sit here consumed with costume designing lust for the rest of the day.

plays piano and sings, confident at performing piano but shyer about singing (unless part of a choir)
was musically trained via participation in Halonic choirs as well as private tutors thanks to the Borels

The Exarch’s Call Headcanons
So the explanation of the “call” accidentally yoinking the Scions is that Exarch essentially cast his proverbial net too wide, affecting the people whose fates were intertwined with the WoL’s, right?
Well, if Kyler’s married to Aymeric, Estinien, and Haurchefant I’d say their fates are pretty godsdamned intertwined.
Initial thought: what’s worse, pulling them into the First along with the Scions when they are so incredibly needed on the Source? Pulling just one of them? Or having them experience the Call... and having none of them go?
At first I thought it would be best to have one of them - Haurchefant - go bc it would be fun to have one of them get to experience the First, but so much of Shadowbringers thematically is about isolation, being a world apart.
So now I’ve landed on this:
It’s MSQ compliant up until Y’shtola and Urianger collapse. After that, Kyler contacts his husbands on linkpearl and asks that they all use their wedding bands - an immensely rare occurrence - because they need to Talk. He tells them about what’s going on, about the voice and the pain, how it’s different than the Echo, how his companions’ souls are missing and their bodies lying dormant. And while they’re talking about it, the call strikes him again.
At first the other three are powerless, watching, and then it strikes Haure. Estinien and Aymeric hardly have time to react before it strikes Aymeric. Then Estinien. Kyler manages to fight through the overwhelming experience to roar out, “No! Stay with me, you have to stay!”
And.....it passes.
All four of them are there. Kyler is terrified.
Estinien still rescues Kyler from Zenos (well, his body). He’s used to having his mind invaded, has practiced for years how to build up his walls and function in spite of interference. The other two less so. Lucia saves Aym and Haure’s lives when it strikes on the battlefield.
And then, as in MSQ, Kyler goes to the base of the Crystal Tower for the “device” left there. The Call is finally successful. And he leaves his husbands behind on the Source, safe from the Exarch’s interference, but also cut off.
When he finally arrives and can speak to the Exarch, his dialogue choice is,
“Do you know how much trouble you’ve caused?”

After "in from the cold", how did your wol react to being body snatched?
<cracks knuckles> I have been WAITING (for no particular reason LOL) to talk about this
Kyler's immediate response was to be absolutely flooded with adrenaline. He fought as desperately as he's ever fought in his life to get back to camp Broken Glass.
Kyler already has a tendency to ignore the signals of his own body, so Fandaniel would absolutely have to help him - perhaps even tut-tutting him about taking such poor care of this vessel, here's hoping the Prince takes better care of the one he's in, hmm?
Once he arrives back in his own body he is in absolute shock and is dissociating spectacularly.
Side note that I simply Have Removed From Headcanon the BS Thancred says directly after; I was not satisfied with the pacing of the story there at ALL, they glossed over the immense trauma of this quest in a way that I think does none of the characters any credit whatsoever! The Scions at this point would be able to tell that Kyler is not okay and would give him time and space as possible and at least be sensitive in how they talk to him! Okay. Moving on.
Back at the Baldesion Annex that night, Thancred can just Tell. That something is Off. When Kyler, in the bath, won't answer him and won't open the door, he lets himself in, worried.
Kyler is sitting in a bath that is clearly too hot, scrubbing himself raw. Thancred has to physically stop him. Kyler has never handled unexpected physical contact well, and Thancred knows this, but unlike times past Kyler goes to resist but puts none of his strength behind it, because he falls apart too completely, clinging to Thancred's chest. He has to lift Kyler out of the too-hot water, wrap him up, and bring him to Urianger for healing, not wanting to expose Kyler's meltdown to either of the Twins or G'raha without Kyler's consent.
After he's healed, he carries him straight to G'raha's room and deposits him in Raha's arms, just saying, "Take care of him. Be gentle," softly and leaving the room. He considers taking him to Estinien...but he doesn’t know whether this whole thing has triggered the fuck out of him (or whether taking Kyler in that state to him would cause them both to spiral) so he chooses G’raha instead.
It takes until after Kyler defeats Zenos for him to talk about all this to anyone.

Adventurer Polycule Thoughts
Aymeric serves his term as the Speaker for the House of Lords and decides he’s going to then abdicate his position as Lord Commander as well, favoring a plan where Lord Commander is also an office with a finite term.
He recommends either Lucia or Handeloupe for the position, and speaks openly on how Lucia is in a prime position to do what is best for the city specifically because she is not Ishgardian by birth. Though she has always said that her only loyalty is to Aymeric, she accepts the nomination and wins in a landslide.
Handeloup, for his part, is excited to be her right hand man. Lucia has her misgivings and is a little nervous to have the position, but she too has found a home in Ishgard, and she is happy that Aymeric is finally doing something for himself.
He sets up his small staff with supplementary pay to carry them over until they can find other employment (except for his Steward: he gets a nice retirement fund). He closes up House Borel until such a time as he decides when (if) to return to it. He takes up the bow again.
He is beside himself with excitement to finally travel the world, and, as had been promised, to do it with Kyler.
Little does he know that he’s not the only one retiring, as it were.
Haurchefant is handing over management of Camp Dragonhead to Emmanellain. (Yes, and Honoroit.) They’ve been sharing the necessary duties for moons now, to the point that Emm has settled into the role nicely.
Little does Emm know that he’s doing all that’s needed, and has been for a while. Still, he waits a bit. After all, he wants Aymeric to feel as though he gets to have his adventure with their husband, something for just the two of them. He gives them some time. But not too much.
Haurchefant lays the foundation of his vision for what Dragonhead can be - for it to flourish under his brother’s care - and then he steps aside. Kyler tells Aymeric he has a surprise for him and that evening not only does Haurchefant join them, so does Estinien.
They have a proper camp out, food prepared over an open fire, wind through the trees, and laugh, and catch up. Aymeric tells the story of his and Kyler’s adventures. Estinien has never seen him so at ease. Except maybe once, after they were married.
They’re free, all four of them, from the stifling expectations of Ishgard. It will always be home, of course it will, and they’ll never be fully removed from it, will return to check up on their loved ones and campaign for further positive change.
But they are, at long last, their own masters. And the Scions have gained in them powerful allies because of it. Estinien is even around more - much more - now that the pressure is off. Sometimes he and Aymeric are attached at the hip: “like old times,” Haurchefant chuckles.
And G’raha, of course, joins them. He tries to walk the line between spending time with them and letting the husbands have Kyler to themselves until they tell him to stop worrying so much. That they’ll say so if they need time. Raha is grateful and flustered at once.
And Kyler? He wouldn’t have things any other way.

Aymeric only wears one blue crystal earring because he gave the other to Estinien back when they were first having a dalliance as Temple Knights. He gave it to him when he was promoted to Knights Dragoon.
Estinien doesn’t have pierced ears, and he also doesn’t want to be caught dead being that openly sentimental, so he had someone convert/reinforce the earring post so that it could be worn on a chain under his clothes/armor. He never takes it off.
(side thread: Mimi thinks this too! I couldn’t remember where I got this idea and it was definitely from her Starlight fic! She gives me her blessing to use it also and thinks it’s probably a common EstiMeric idea!)
Later, Aymeric thinks it would be nice - he would like it - if Kyler and Haurchefant had matching ones too. But he worries: would that bother Estinien? Cheapen his original gesture, do his younger self and his deep affection for his first real love a disservice?
He has to work up the courage to talk to Estinien about it, finds he is actually...very nervous.
