In the past year, I’ve been experiencing the effects of some pretty severe burnout. Moving at a different pace, not so much by choice but obligation. Outside the collective measure of productivity, even time feels like it starts to move differently. Being out of work is like being out of time. Around this time last year, I was closing an exhibition with @kreuzbergpavillon called A Prime Dystopia, a project that poked fun at the generic formula of startup marketing but also imagined Kreuzberg Pavillon, more seriously, like many other self-organized, independent creative spaces, as a product of potential economic displacement—not unlike what I experienced living in San Francisco, when, in 2012, the city began to offer financial incentives to lure companies like Twitter, whose office still looms over San Francisco’s contested Mid-Market area, away from Silicon Valley. To end this year, we open a new exhibition building on those themes, this time, however, with an focus on the opacity of the “dark store” model, a retailer that resembles a conventional supermarket but fulfills only online orders and is inaccessible to the public, and its contemporary relationship to self-organization, labor agency, and class consciousness. Spitfire Audio is proud to announce availability of HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS — a sample library comprising an extension of the sound palette of Berlin-based electronic music composer and performer Hainbach’s musically mind- blowing Landfill Totems concept album simultaneously released on SA Recordings, the London-based label owned by the British music technology company, allowing access to a truly unique world of one-of-a-kind, bespoke sounds expertly curated by Hainbach himself from long-forgotten, now-obsolete test equipment collected from nuclear research labs, grandfathers’ sheds, and scrap heaps, completely repurposed and given a new lease of life as instruments, meticulously recorded and processed further before being presented in Spitfire Audio’s award-winning, easy-to-use plug-in as many morphing and evolving sounds suited to techno and ambient music production, as well as cutting-edge film scoring — as of April 8… Berlin-based electronic music composer and performer Hainbach (a.k.a. Appropriately, the Landfill Totems project started life as a performance installation at Berlin’s PNDT — a new art gallery whose purpose is to provide a space for culture and creation, for presentation and appreciation of art in all its forms, expanding exponentially into a full album and accompanying sample library recorded at Patch Point, builders and sellers of unique instruments in Kreuzberg-Berlin — much more than a standard store on account of offering residencies to promote community and education through a free booking room filled with unique synthesizers for everyone to play. Hainbach himself puts it this way: “What I love about Patch Point is that it is a place for those interested in sound and music itself. You don’t go there to buy a box with 999 presets that will make you sound like the industry standard; you go there to find something that speaks to you. You pick up something that will start an intimate process of music creation, and it will sound like you, and only you.” Subsequently stacked into three monolithic towers resembling totem poles, each piece of equipment thereon was carefully chosen by Hainbach for its distinctive tone generation and modulation capabilities before being wired together much like a modular synthesiser. Says the electronic music composer and performer eventually lending his notable name and one-of-a-kind, bespoke sounds to Spitfire Audio’s HAINBACH - LANDFILL TOTEMS sample library: “Each tower of equipment took the form of a lifelike statue, and suddenly all these faces started appearing in the machines. They made massive sounds and unfamiliar noises and I thought, ‘I want these to be heard — to sing again.’”
As anyone observing those assembled anthropomorphic figures could conceivably concur, a deep appreciation and affection for the engineering technology of the past is apparent — totally unique machines assembled for one final swan song. Ultimately upcycled and redesigned as pillars and shrines, these totems act as a commentary on the environmental cost of progress; what was once the pinnacle of technology quickly becomes unviable and destined for the scrapheap — if not for the intervention of Hainbach, creating beauty from that which is thought to be obsolete. Carefully chosen to create this towering collection is medical, telecommunication, and scientific research equipment, vintage sound-testing devices, a Nuclear Instrumentation Modular, an outmoded medical signal generator, a mixer previously used by the Stasi — the state security service in former East Germany, and a Brüel & Kjaer 1613 bandpass filter creating the hi-hat, bass drum, and watery sounds.
Simultaneously released alongside Hainbach’s musically mind-blowing Landfill Totems concept album on SA Recordings, Spitfire Audio’s sample library namesake sees those same machines completely repurposed and given a new lease of life in an unforeseen capacity as instruments, producing unpredictable sounds from another world — wide ranging from eerie morse code bleeps and comms signals to flickering bass pulses; deep drones and ominous pads to grainy textural rhythms; visceral clicks, industrial drum hits and loops; and electromagnetic noise to heavenly humanoid ‘voices’. Virtual instrument brilliance is guaranteed as everything is meticulously recorded and processed further as dystopian sounds presented in Spitfire Audio’s award-winning, easy-to-use plug-in providing access to truly one-of-a- kind, bespoke creations, impossible to recreate otherwise.

This is a thing that I wrote a long time ago.
It isn’t fanfiction. It’s just fiction. 
I will be posting here until I think of what to do with it.
FERNWEH
 When Becca decides to shake off those shackles and get the hell outta Dodge, she doesn’t have many regrets. She won’t miss those late nights folding baby clothes at her local All Baby Needs SuperStore. She won’t miss her distant parents or her uninspiring classes for her useless degree. The only person she will miss is Jack.
Jack is stuck in the post-university, pre-real job wasteland of delayed adolescence. He doesn’t know if he is a socialist, or an anarchist, or just reads too many books. He stacks vegetables, he haunts libraries and he chases girls. But now his best friend is leaving town, and he doesn’t know if he can handle being left behind.
A story about growing up, leaving home, staying behind, sad bastard music and the people who make everything bearable.
Chapter One: 
Becca
Truthfully, I can handle all of it. The cloying stench of mouldy socks and clove cigarettes. The scratchy, standard-issue woollen blanket that wasn’t quite enough to wade off the night-time chill. The oddly masculine snoring that would make any trucker proud. The clanking of pipes in the wall beside my bed that had me sat bolt upright on my first night, half convinced the ghost of Jacob Marley was coming for me, dragging the chains he’d forged in life. All of this didn’t bother me. Not really. But the weeping. I couldn’t handle the fucking weeping.
I’d been sharing a room in Berlin’s cheapest youth hostel for a week with Ilonka, from Hungary. Ilonka the weeper. And we aren’t talking about girlish sobs here, with intermittent hiccups. Oh no. Not Ilonka. Beautiful, heartbroken, weeping Ilonka. She didn’t do anything by half measures.
She’d told me her life story on the first night, over a Midori and lemonade in the bar downstairs. I was quickly coming to the realisation that this was how it was done. Nothing in Backpacker World got done without a bit of Dutch courage.
Ilonka’s story was that she’d come to Berlin to intern at one of those ridiculously trendy, ridiculously contemporary art galleries in Kreuzberg. Which made sense. With her extensive collection of very cute multi-coloured berets, long, lean legs encased habitually in skinny jeans, and her Franka Potente in Run Lola Run hair, she certainly looked the part. She made me feel inadequate every time she entered a room, and I was convinced that was at least half of what contemporary art was all about.
Which is why it was so disconcerting when halfway through her third Midori and lemonade, big fat tears began to slip down her perfect, Eastern European face, and into her drink, which she continued to sip through her straw, unperturbed. Then, without much warning, she keeled forward, and a high-pitched noise of distress began to rise from the back of her throat, not unlike that of an ambulance leaving the scene of an accident. The barman, cute and Irish though he may have been, gave us that ‘You’d better clear the fuck out’ look perfected by cute Irish bartenders the world over, and I bundled her upstairs before he summoned over the bouncer, who was significantly more intimidating.
Once I’d gotten her settled on her twin bed, she pulled herself together enough to relate to me the rest of the story. On her third week into her internship, she’d rung up her boyfriend, Kolos, back home in Budapest, and her best friend had answered the phone. Turns out they’d been screwing around behind her back for the last six months, and they had used Ilonka’s absence to move in together. Which you have to give points for, if only for the sheer brazen cowardice of it all. Were they going to keep up the charade until it came time to ask her to be the Maid of Honour at their wedding?
Ilonka was a wreck. She’d keep it together all day, every day at work, but as soon as she got back into the room she would just lie on her bed, crying inconsolably for hours, until she eventually, mercifully, fell asleep. If she wasn’t weeping, she was sitting on the window sill, where she had pried the window open, and was smoking her favourite clove cigarettes in flagrant disregard of our dorm’s no smoking policy, and my (fabricated) assertions that I was an asthmatic. She’d hold her cigarette in one hand and her mobile phone in the other, and yell obscenities in Hungarian to whoever was on the other end, in between puffs. I don’t speak a lick of Hungarian, but you can always tell an obscenity, no matter the language. It’s about the force behind the delivery. The venom behind the words.
The hostel had been chosen for its location, just off the Ku'damm, not for its internal décor or sterling customer service record. Which is just as well, because I’d been in cancer wards with more cheer; the grey-speckled institutional style walls hinting at the building’s previous life as an insane asylum perhaps, or at the very least a reform school. My polite request to move to a different room had been met with a coolly raised eyebrow, and an unconvincing promise that they’d see what they could do.
It wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for my first foray into the world of international travel. But it certainly made for interesting anecdotes for my emails sent back home.
I’d say things were going much better for me outside of the hostel, but that was a matter of some debate.
A few months back, embittered by my slow slide from promising Journalism student to person-who-straightens-cans-of-baby-food-in-a-budget-department-store-for-a-living, I’d stayed up until four in the morning one night, researching methods of escaping the monotonous retail hell that my life had become.
My unlikely salvation was with a company that would pay for me to fly to Germany to work as an Au Pair for a year. They’d even put me up in Berlin for a month, so I could brush up on the language, before they dispatched me to the family they would pair me with. All of those weekend evenings spent wrangling my neighbour’s kids to bed when I was sixteen had suddenly come in handy, and I had signed on the dotted line.
Of course, when I say “brush up on the language”, I mean learn from scratch. Of course. German had never been an elective at high school. I’d learnt Italian, although that data had almost been completely rewritten in my mind, replaced with an intricate knowledge of song lyrics by a particular favourite band of mine, who specialised in what my friend Jack liked to call “Sad Bastard Music.”
The total sum of my German language proficiency before my departure had been restricted to numbers one through ten, hello, good bye, thank you, and handful of random phrases one picks up after a lifetime of watching World War Two dramas, none of which were suitable for polite company. My knowledge of German culture was mostly restricted to a general appreciation for Daniel Brühl’s face, and a vague recollection of having read Faust when I was fourteen.
It was not until I took a seat on the first day of classes, that I realised what a grave mistake I had made. There was no way I would be able to wrangle children, even relatively small, uncomplicated ones, in four weeks time, with absolutely zero grasp on the language. It was impossible. Unfathomable.
Our teacher was a jovial fellow called Hans-Peter. He had the kind of white bushy moustache and knitted jumpers which made him look rather like a benevolent tug-boat captain, and kind eyes that encouraged students to take risks where they might otherwise have kept silent. He was a good teacher. I could tell. But there was no way in hell he was going to make me semi-fluent within a month.
Every classroom in the language school was named after a particular river in Germany. Our classroom, Donau, which I later discovered was the German word for the Danube, was right at the top of three dizzyingly uneven flights of stairs, in a converted attic where every inch of wall space was dedicated to laminated charts depicting a different German verb, and its various forms. It also had a broken radiator, which Hans-Peter would kick good-naturedly every morning when it failed to break the chill, before instructing us to keep our gloves on.
That’s the first useful German phrase I learn.
“Handschuhe auf!“ Gloves on.
The second:
“Jacken auf!“ Jackets on.
I’d always had a natural talent for scholastic endeavours. Which is to say, I’d really crashed and burned at university when I’d gotten through twelve years of schooling without really trying too hard, to find I actually had no idea how to study. But I’d always managed to scrape by on natural ability. I had no natural ability when it came to German. I was a babe in the woods. And I definitely needed to study.
Being in a foreign country where you don’t speak the language is a little like being a newborn lamb. You stumble a lot, and you’re vulnerable as hell, but everyone finds you pretty damn adorable anyway, for the most part. But for someone who has always been really good at things, it is the ultimate exercise in humility. Suddenly, you’re unable to do even the most simplest of things. Order a coffee. Ask for directions. Make an effusive apology to the angry looking guy you bump into on the train.
It had taken me five whole days to work up the necessary courage to approach even a McDonalds counter. I practiced the order in my head, as I waited in line.
“Ein Happy Meal, bitte.” One Happy Meal, please.
I didn’t think even I could fuck that up. I tried to anticipate what questions they would ask me, in which order. Would I like a toy? Would I like ketchup?
When they asked me if I wanted mayo or ketchup on my fries, the unexpected option made me answer in the affirmative, without specifying which I preferred, pissing off the harried-looking girl behind the counter in the process. I could feel my cheeks flush with embarrassment, and I backed away from the counter, waving my hands and butchering an apology in my pidgin German.
I never went back to that McDonalds.
Like a diamond in the rough, I found a T-Mobile payphone on my way back to the hostel and I fed about ten euro in change into the machine until it finally connected me to Jack’s mobile. It rang out, and went to voicemail, and instead of leaving a message, I hung up the receiver, and burst into angry, embarrassed tears. I didn’t get any change back, either.
Wiping my face clean with the sleeve of my coat, I hurried back to the hostel, before I could make an idiot of myself in some new way. Still hungry, I raided the vending machine in the lobby, and sat on my bed eating out-of-date chips until Ilonka had returned. She took one look at my tear-stained face and unsatisfying dinner and bundled me into my coat and took me out to an Irish Pub around the corner for a pint of Guinness and something called a Blarney Burger.
“It will not always be so,” she reminds me sagely, as she steals a chip from my plate. And for a little while there, Ilonka is my hero. When I grow up I want to be just like her. We sing Cranberries songs together, and make the acquaintance of some chipper blokes from County Clare who are, of course, enamoured with Ilonka’s ethereal Eastern European beauty, and keep us plied with enough black stuff that I quite forget about the dizzying regret that has been eating me away inside for days.
But later that night, the weeping starts again, and it chips away, slowly but steadily, at my newfound regard for her. I get up for class early the next morning, head still throbbing from the previous night’s excesses, and leave her a note on her bedside table.
“It will not always be so.”

Many people told me the same thing over and over: Berlin is colorless, dull and impersonal. I found many colors in the capital of Germany: in its parks, with their yellow, rust and red leaves. It certainly isn’t dull or characterless; for sure it is challenging, especially when it comes to the things that have been removed or destroyed, but that have left their mark anyway. In Berlin there’s a huge elephant in the room: the past of the city, looming somewhere over the roof of Check Point Charlie, moving from the two actors dressed up as soldiers and the row of souvenirs shops.
Sometimes, during my stay in Berlin I have felt the need to take a break, to do something lighthearted: for some it’s retail therapy, in my case food is the cure. That’s why between one neighborhood and the next I stopped along the way for many food – and coffee – breaks, which were anyway useful to get to know the city. My meals took place over the course of three days, but ideally I’d love to spend a full day eating up Berlin.
Breakfast: Meierei
After walking through the Wall Memorial at Bernauerstrasse, after seeing the photos depicting the desperation of the families divided by a block of bricks and concrete, one needs a distraction. At least I needed to stop thinking – if only for a while – about what it must have been like to walk past a watchtower everyday on your way to work or to school.
In just over twenty-minute we are in Prenzlauer Berg, a former working class area. Now the cobbled streets surrounding Kollwitzplatz are dotted with independent shops and small cafés. One of these drives me to its door: Meierei is a small coffee place with a handful of tables, where you sit down with complete strangers, smile and enjoy the atmosphere of this former dairy. You order at the bar, choosing an Americano or a chai tea, nibbling on a bretzel or a apple and raisin pie, all the way looking at Berliners on the sidewalk outside.
Lunch: Renger-Patzsch
We are in Schöneberg, a residential area in southwest Berlin. It is amazing how each corner of this city is imbued with history: it feels like every single cobblestone has something to tell about its past. It’s in a square close-by that Kennedy gave the famous speech where he described himself as ein Berliner. Besides, the Schöneberg City Hall hosted the city council of West Berlin, in opposition to the Rotes Rathaus, the red town hall of the Soviet sector.
Renger-Patzsch is the ideal destination for lunch in Schöneberg. Understatement is the key world here: the décor is minimal, with worn out wooden floors, simple tables and sturdy chairs. The place is named after the famous photographer whose works are hanging on the whitewashed walls. From the glorious past of the 20’s, to the devastation of the World War and the Cold War, and finally the rebuilding that took place starting from the 90’s.
The Panoramacafé is not cheap and its hot chocolate is just ok, but the strongest point is its location with a 360 degree view on the city and its landmarks: the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag building, the Cathedral and the Fernsehturm.
Dinner: Henne
Kreuzberg is probably the most varied neighborhood from a cultural and ethnical point of view: a melting pot where students, punks and immigrants live side by side. It brings back to my mind some memories of London in the 90’s: a bit run-down, but still charming. The past peeks out from the narrow alleys, as if trying to remind walkers-by that this was one of the most troubled areas in the years following World War II. Kreuzberg was the neighborhood of the Mietkasernen, the council flats built in the 1800’s to house workers and their families. In the 80’s it became a sort of no-man’s land sandwiched between West and East. That’s when the riots against the police started: the authorities wanted to send away the inhabitants of the neighborhood apartments – most of which were actually squats – that were to be rebuilt or renovated. Kreuzberg became a battlefield, and its pubs became the meeting points of the local workers and the Besetzer living in the squats.
One of the oldest places is Henne, an ancient Kneipe um die Ecke, a sort of inn at the corner of a street. The place has probably undergone very few changes since it opened in 1908. Sure enough, the rickety tables and the worn-out wooden floor are probably as old as the green, thick curtains that keep out the cold and prevent passers-by from peeking inside. A couple of ancient chandeliers cast a dim light on the set of antlers standing guard over the doors. The menu is quite limited, with two starters – potato or cabbage salad – whereas the only main course is a half chicken, deep-fried. As to desserts, one can choose a chocolate tart or a vanilla cake. The check is just above ten euros for a simple meal and a step back in time.

In the middle of the day there wasn't much to see or do, so we took a train back to Alexanderplatz and walked around towards the Hackesche Höfe, once Europe's biggest retail complex, with 8 courtyards  Seventy years ago, the Potsdamer Platz area was the busiest traffic zone in Europe with the first traffic lights here installed in 1924. In 1961, the Berlin Wall divided it in two. Twenty years ago it was a wasteland, seen in Wim Winders' Wings of Desire and used as the staging ground for Roger Water's 1990 live concert of The Wall. Then it became Europe's biggest construction zone, with a phenomenal dredging project required to stabilise the marshy ground that Berlin lies upon. Thoughts on street art and gentrification.
According to some, street art plays a large role in the first stages of gentrification. Those who are schooled in urban planning will have sophisticated explanations of how cities grow and shift, evolve and devolve. For the layperson like myself, gentrification is often described as having a formula. Artists and artisans move into a neighbourhood where the rental is cheap and/or plenty of industrial spaces are available for workshops. The surfaces of that neighbourhood experience an injection of creativity: mural pieces and street art, spilling over and out of art studios. Then come the (hipster) coffee shops, and once an area is suitably trendy, the retailers arrive followed by developers and more corporate elements.
Some imagine this process to be a positive evolution. They say that buildings require investment to keep from falling into disrepair and that the city doesn’t want to be sitting with dilapidated building stock. An argument for gentrification says that if an area upgrades its buildings, if there is a growing interest in an area, if there is increased economic activity and better service delivery in that area, surely this would benefit the local community.
Here’s the crux, the locals don’t usually get to stay. When gentrification pushes out people who can no longer afford the rising rates and rentals or when newly priced properties are sold to developers without legislation, evicting tenants who have lived in those properties for most of their lives or uprooting family businesses that have been part of an area’s heritage for years, gentrification is no longer a process of upliftment for all. Of course this happens all over the world where market forces are left to their own devices, but when it happens in a South African city like Cape Town, it has the double blow of perpetuating an already unjust apartheid spatial layout.
Anti-gentrification voices have claimed that street artists effectively act as agents for rich property developers – a statement that might seem heavy-handed. Is it possible to imagine an injection of creativity in an area (and by that I also mean creative collaboration and education) without the casting aside of heritage and those who already live there? Within the realms of possibility, of course this must be achievable but what are some of the things that need to be in place to ensure locals stay and reap the benefits?
Other major cities around the world have areas where rent regulations are in place. Simply put: rental prices have a ceiling i.e. you cannot charge above a fixed rental amount for a certain type of unit. The percentage that rentals increase per year is also capped. In South Africa, new legislation (The Rental Housing Amendment Act) will open the way for rent regulation but this has yet to come into effect. Perhaps we aren’t applying the necessary pressure or educating ourselves properly on how this could work and manifest.
A restorative process, is for the state to develop as much affordable housing as possible in an area that is gentrifying so that if worse comes to worst and people are evicted, at least they have options to stay in the neighbourhood where they have jobs, where their children attend school and where they are part of a community.
Since the state is constitutionally required to reverse our legacy of spatial injustice, when will we see the City of Cape Town deliver substantially on inner city affordable and inclusionary housing? When will we see proper legislation that provides incentives and/or requirements for private developers to include a percentage of affordable housing in their developments?  In Cape Town, local government says it has plans for social housing developments at six different locations in Salt River and Woodstock, but we all need to get behind this drive to ensure it happens. We also need to get people thinking creatively and changing perceptions of what affordable housing looks like and how it works, educating ourselves along the way. What is inclusionary housing? What is mixed income housing? What is cross subsidization? What is a social housing institution (SHI) and how does it manage such housing?
Working to solve our housing crisis is to the benefit and social health of everyone who lives here. According to Cape Town urban planners, the city can and should densify; mixed neighbourhoods are healthy neighbourhoods; we must prevent urban sprawl; we must reverse spatial injustice; and we must give those on the city’s outskirts affordable inner city living options.
Another route, and this is admittedly a longer shot, is to appeal to the better sides of property developers. No one should be buying property without knowing the full story of those in residence. If evicting people is inevitable to the development (which, hopefully, is already sensitively planned with regards to what it will bring to the neighbourhood) developers should be thinking long and hard about what they are planning to do to accommodate those people, or to put it simply, how they are planning to avoid ruining their lives. Naming and shaming/callout culture is also one option as bad reputation is bad for business. Realistically though, this would need legislation.
If neighbourhoods are improved (exactly what ‘improvement’ looks like is up for debate), it should be for those who live there and plan to stay living there. Giving colour and creativity to an area shouldn’t necessarily result in a certain type of development, there should be other potential outcomes and futures. 
But what about in the interim between our current situation and this imagined future we need to create?  Woodstock is already well into the throes of gentrification, with stories of the pain of eviction. What about artists and their positionality during a time when the rumblings of gentrification are now being felt in the adjacent Salt River?  Does one simply abstain from creating work in this area in the event one is an ‘agent’ for property developers? Would all artists agree to not work in the area? From my limited personal experience, it seems as though many street artists are the sorts of people that don’t need to be sensitised; collaborating with communities with regards to what people would like in their public spaces, is something that these artists do regularly. Asking the local community what they would like is one thing, abstinence is another. And if one wants to be clearcut about it, if it is a matter of personal morality, then erasing one’s own existing work in a gentrifying area, ala Blu, is something that should be considered.

Such actions may or may not slow the processes of gentrification down, but would they really be an effective longterm deterrent for development? Would gentrification go ahead regardless, considering the prime location of Salt River and how ‘the gentrification wave’ so to speak, has a life of its own?
In essence, does cutting off the branch of a tree (if that were even possible) solve a problem that is in actuality at its root - in this case the root being how our property market is structured and unregulated?
An alternative is to show up and join the conversation by using one’s work to help create a different vision. Movements need mass consciousness, and who better to provide the necessary traction for those movements than those who decorate public space?  
When it comes to the processes of gentrification, if street/public artists have agency, they might be able to use that agency to help popularise what is needed to remedy spatial injustice. That goes for the public at large - one can be anti-gentrification but that won’t stop gentrification. One can be idealistic and say that an area should remain untouched, but one’s words won’t hold gentrification back unless one is simultaneously finding positive movements to get behind that counter the process or mitigate its effects. 
The choice is up to the artist as to how political they want their work to become, but we need to see the issue at its source and not blame street art for a problem that needs to be tackled at its root.

Drawing from her Finnish heritage, von Löw showcases her roots in the menu. On offer, you’ll find a large variety of Finnish treats, like delicious Korvapuusti—cinnamon rolls with cardamom and a lot of butter. It’s a minimal setup, but ideal since the “cafe” part gets taken down every night when the bar opens and gets built again every morning. Ketori uses their own roasted beans for espresso drinks and a variety of local roasters for their pour-overs. In addition to the beverage options, there are also homemade vegan pastries that should not be missed.

  Five Elephant
Five Elephant is one of the most well-known roasteries in Berlin. They’ve already made their mark in the city with their Mitte and Kreuzberg cafes, but their latest opening is in one of Berlin’s most iconic locations, Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe for short). The luxury mall, originally built in 1907, was mostly destroyed in World War II and had to be rebuilt. It was brought back to its former glory and has since become a landmark of West Berlin. The top two floors are dedicated to food, and it’s here that the newest Five Elephant has opened.
This new cafe, designed by Sunst Studio, showcases a handmade Terrazzo marble bar equipped with slick Modbar espresso and La Marzocco machines. The coffee roast options change according to the season. Unlike previous Five Elephant locations, there will be other drinks on offer, such as wine, beer, and even coffee cocktails. Their ever-popular cheesecake will also be available at Five Elephant KaDeWe along with a few other sweets.

Cafe Canna is one of the more interesting newcomers to Berlin’s coffee scene—and a bit of a departure. The cafe is the first in Berlin to serve CBD-infused drinks and treats. While cannabis is still not “legal” in the sense that it’s not available to everyone, as of 2017, medical cannabis has been legalized. The law shows a change in the public and legal perception of cannabis and how it may be legalized one day in Germany. For the meantime, CBD containing no more than 0.2% THC can be sold openly. Opened in August of 2019, Cafe Canna is headed by Berlin native Nico Schack who wants to spread the health benefits of the plant. CBD and CBD coffee was a big trend in America already so I thought the Berliner should get the experience as well.” Many menu items at Cafe Canna have either hemp or CBD, or CBD oil can also be added to anything. The cafe’s açai bowls are topped with hemp seeds and there are also homemade raw “Happy Balls” that contain CBD. Coffee drinks are made with CBD-infused beans shipped from the Netherlands and all other drinks can also be made with CBD oil. There’s also hemp beer and soda available alongside CBD oils of various percentages that can also be purchased.
While the food or drinks aren’t meant to make you high, there may be a mild, calming effect which is what Schack is aiming for. Most patrons who come in without much knowledge of the plant are looking for the pain-relieving or calming properties. It’s the right place to learn about CBD and try it before committing to a big purchase.
