Did you know they are pregnant for 18 months .. that’s a long period! No wonder that the aren’t baby sharks all over :-) . Gansbaai, the Capital of the Great White Shark, in South Africa still has few great whites being frequent visitors in the bay. But unfortunately less than in the „good old days“. It was a 4.1m male with similar injuries to previous white sharks that washed up here. At the first sighting, we were the first ones to jump into wet suits and climb into the metal cage, the only thing separating us from the great white sharks roaming the waters just off the coast of Kleinbaai. The crew baited the sharks closer, and we took a deep breath, pushing ourselves under the water to see them beneath the ocean’s waves. Sharks hadn’t been spotted in the area in nearly a month, so today was our lucky day.

Great White Sharks are spectacular animals! This species is found along coastal surface waters of all of our major oceans. In South Africa the highest density of Carcharodon carcharias is found around Dyer Island, Gansbaai. The ever growing colony of Cape Fur Seals on Geyser Rock offers the Great Whites a great hunting area - which in turn affords scientists from all over the world an opportunity to study this species. Great Whites are a migratory species, individuals that visit the Gansbaai coastline regularly have been recorded in Mozambique and as far as Australia!
