Wait actually, Logan rookie agent and Alex veteran agent.

CW: Violence in gen. Think Mission Impossible

Logan goes on a mission for the first time and it goes so horribly wrong, he's benched and is demoted to desk duty. It's like "I almost killed my partner" bad. Then a few months goes by and he gets notice that he's finally been put out of his guilt and misery and he's going to go on a mission in a week's time. The problem though? He's going to get a new partner which is none other than Agent Alex Albon. Infamous for rising up to the top when nobody was expecting it, he's skilled in 3 different martial arts, a marksman and helped take down a notorious gang in his rookie year. So yea, no biggy. It's fine when they meet, Alex's funny but he's really, really sarcastic so sometimes Logan doesn't know if he's actually being serious or not and just awkwardly stammers out a laugh. Their dynamics is quite confusing to the other agents. Even so, Logan is not complaining at all. Anything to get him out of desk duty and truthfully, he doesn't really mind you know, working with Alex. Alex is nice. Really nice to look at to work with. When they do finally go on the mission, Logan assumed this would be an easy one. Just some plain ol' recon, still dangerous if you slip-up but not too life-threatening. And it was, that is until they saw something they shouldn't have seen and now their agency is getting threatened. But why should the agency care? They're called a secret impregnable fort for a reason, right? Wrong. The bad guys break into the agency guns blazing and overall 0/10 would not try again. There weren't any casualties, just a few minor injuries. The agency doesn't employ some of the most talented agents for no reason. Unless you count Logan getting shot in the arm and kidnapped a major injury. His kidnapper was a few inches shorter than him, had wispy blonde hair coming out of the black balaclava he was wearing and was pretty built. Had kind of a similar accent to Oscar but not. The agency tries to save him, keyword being tries because they did try, they just didn't see this unprecedented situation. Which was Alex moving to JOIN the bad guys??? Apparently he's a double agent which is great hahahaha, not like Logan had barred his soul to him or actually fallen for him or anything.... Yea, so the agency fails to save him because Alex takes out an honest to God syringe and plunges it into Logan's chest, embedding it deep into his body. Last thing Logan remembers before darkness overcomes him is a gunshot ringing but he can't find it himself to see who's hurt, he's ..just...so....tiiireddddd.........

"You're up"

Groaning, Logan rubs his head, trying to cease the throbbing headache he's currently experiencing.

"Would've woken up sooner if you didn't give me such a big dose. Trying to kill me Albon?"

Yea, so maybe Logan's a double agent too...whoopsie. He's just that good of an actor. [Cue my brainrot of actor Logan and driver Oscar or Alex, I'm not picky]

"Nah, I like your face too much to kill you Sarge"

"Right, if you two lovebirds don't mind, we've got work to do."

Logan takes notice of the man off to his left. He has one hand in his pocket and the other sweeping up his blond hair to the side, an exasperated look on his face.

"No wait, let's rewind back to when you literally shot me in the arm. What the fuck?"

"I needed to do it! People would've talked if you had only like one scratch"

"Oh and so you thought hmm a gunshot wound would be the next best choice?"

"Stop complaining man, our work isn't done yet. It's time we move on to phase 2."

The Nightshade Anti-AI Tutorial Sort Of For Those Who Asked

These instructions are for Windows users. I don't own a mac so I have no idea how it runs there.

1. Download the software package. It's hard to find via Google for some reason. You can find it here: https://nightshade.cs.uchicago.edu/whatis.html

Make sure you have at least 3 gigs of space on your hard drive (not that Nightshade takes up this much when done, but it will save you heartache later. Trust me.)

2. It will download an archived folder. Make a new folder on your system (call it whatever you want). Then (right-click the archived folder and choose "extract". When prompted, choose the folder you just made as the location to extract the stuff to. This takes a while.

3. Now look in that new folder. There should be a folder in there called "Nightshade". Look in there for an icon - the thing you double click on to launch the program. The icon is half a skull and a leaf.

4. NOW this program is a resource hog. Close all programs and reboot BEFORE trying to launch the program. If you open it and get a warning that the program "needs more resources", open the task manager. Look for any applications that are running behind the scenes - Bing is a big offender. Click on those and stop the process. Then try again.

5. The program will take some time to get ready. When open it will say "loading resources". Let this finish.

6. When it's done loading, look on the left side of the program. First, set the two sliders there all the way to the left. If the program runs smoothly like this, you can increase the poison level and the processing speed later.

7. On the top left there's a button to click to select the image you want to poison. You can select more than one, but start with a single image until you see how your computer handles it.

8. On the bottom left, click the button that will let you select where to save the file. Save it wherever you will be able to find it later.

9. On the top right, the program will select a keyword that it thinks describes the picture. If you don't think it's accurate, change it to a word that better describes the image - one word only!

10. Click the button to start the program - it's on the right, you can't miss it.

11. Let it run. This takes a long time. I'd suggest letting it run overnight - start it when you go to bed. The program will tell you if it was successful or not.

12. If the program failed, it will say so. No files will be created.

If the program succeeds it will say so. It will create 2 files. One is the poisoned image, the other is a text file. In the text file is a web address. When you post the image, post this address into the alt text for the image. The alt text is a feature that lets you put in a description of the image for visually impaired folks. Different social media has different ways to apply this.

And.....that's it!

It's not terribly streamlined yet, but in the future it will likely become a web feature or app, but for now, it's better than nothing.

Pulling you up to where he stood, he cupped your face and pushed a strand of hair behind your ear. “How are you feeling, my dear? Are you still enjoying yourself or would you rather we rest for a while?”

“I´m fine, Zhongli. I´m just not used to this kind of terrain.” Leaning into his touch, you gave him a genuine smile. “But I know I don´t have to worry with you around. I trust you know what you´re doing.”

“That I am. Yet, I am still very much elated hearing such high praise come from the one I treasure so dearly,” he chuckled fondly. “Very well then, shall we continue? I assure you, our destination is worth the arduous ascent.”

“In that regard, I trust you, too.”

You had been dating Zhongli for a few months now and you couldn´t wish for a more perfect boyfriend. He was kind, well-mannered and knowledgeable; a tried and true gentleman if you had ever met one. His every action exuded confidence without the bitter sting of arrogance, giving you the necessary security to feel comfortable in your new relationship.

Dating was a whole new world to you, so having a partner who was self-assured without being patronising eased your nerves endlessly. Additionally, Zhongli was very patient and never rushed you into anything, wanting to take things at your pace, something you were eternally grateful for.

As light graces and soft touches slowly turned into loving pecks to the back of your palm and then into fleeting kisses to your temple or the crown of your head, you slowly grew bolder in your own advances, allowing yourself to seek your boyfriend out for cuddles or giving him a kiss on the cheek. There was something, however, which turned your stomach upside down with anxiety.

Having never been in a relationship before, the ominous first kiss had yet to happen and it had plagued you for a while now. You had no idea what to do! What if you completely messed it up? The idea of your first kiss being an awkward disaster made your stomach sink as if you had swallowed a lump of coal. And even if Zhongli reassured you countless of times there was no need to rush and he was patiently waiting for you to grow comfortable with the thought, you couldn´t help but wonder if he was getting tired of having to accommodate for your indecisiveness.

Truth was, you wanted to kiss him, you really did! But the image of messing up due to your lack of experience swept every possible attempt to the side.

Mulling the issue over in your head, you barely noticed you´d arrived at the top of the mountain overlooking the valleys of Liyue. You weren´t high enough to be above the sea of clouds quite yet, but the scenes of rivers bending along the foot of hills and sunlight dipping between boulders and rocks was breathtaking in and of its own.

“Wow… It´s so beautiful,” you breathed, not daring to raise your voice of a whisper.

“That it is. There is nothing quite as stunning as the landscape Liyue is graciously presenting us with.” His voice was filled with pride and fondness as if he was talking about an old friend. Then, his tone notably softened. “Well, there is one exception.”

“More beautiful than this? What would that be?” Turning to face him, you found yourself already staring into intense amber, Zhongli´s gaze locked on you in a way that made your knees weak.

“It´s right here, in front of me.” Reaching out to hold your face between his slender fingers once again, his thumb strayed to trace along your cheek as he gifted you with the warmest of smiles. “Never in my life have I perceived a more wonderful sight, capable of moving both my heart and soul in ways I never could have imagined before. Had I not had the grandest of fortunes in meeting you, I would never have believed it to be possible. Yet, here you are, right before my very eyes.”

“Zhongli…” Looking to the side in hopes of lessening the burn in your cheeks, you tried to gather your bearings. “Seriously, you can´t just say things like that! How am I supposed to come up with an even slightly comparable answer?”

As his arms embraced you, you could feel his laughter vibrate through his chest. “My deepest apologies, dearest (Y/N). I suppose I simply couldn´t help myself. After all, the finest of masterpieces should never go uncommented.”

Burying your head further into his chest, your words came out muffled but Zhongli still picked up on them clear as day. “You´re doing this on purpose…”

“Perhaps,” he admitted, hints of normally suppressed mischief shining through. “Just know, my every word is as genuine as it is true.”

Peeking up at him, your gaze swept from the serene grace of his eyes down to the dip of his lips before quickly averting your eyes again when you caught yourself.

“Is everything alright, love?” Stepping back, Zhongli studied your expression and posture, then gently placed two fingers under your chin and turned your head back towards him when you didn´t shy away from his touch. The downtrodden glace in your eyes tangibly tugged at his heartstrings. “I couldn´t help but notice you were unusually quiet on our trip up here as well. Darling, you know you can confide in me whatever it is that is weighing on your mind. I never want you to feel like you have to hide your feelings from me.”

“It´s nothing really, just got caught up in a thought is all,” you mumbled. You knew you should probably tell him, he was your very understanding boyfriend after all. But… why were you hesitating? “Zhongli, I-”

The warmth of his fingers left your face as he clasped both your fidgeting hands between his own, giving them an reassuring squeeze backed by an equally comforting smile. Releasing the breath you didn´t know you were holding, you tried to calm your racing heart. As you closed your eyes you focused on the thought that there was nothing to be nervous about.

“I´ve just been thinking about how we´ve been dating for a while but still haven´t had our first kiss and I guess that´s kinda my fault,” your voice drifted off as the mountain winds almost swept away words, carrying them, however, directly to your boyfriend. Before he could start though, you already shushed his objections. “It´s not that I don´t want to, it´s the opposite really but… I also really don´t want to mess up. Guess I´m just scared.”

“I was not aware you were agonising about this, love. I´m sorry for failing to realise a silly notion such as this was troubling you so.” This time it was him who made your rebuttal at the word ‘silly’ die on your tongue with a tender kiss to your temple. “Yes, it is silly, my dear. Maybe not to you but in the grand scheme of life, it very much is. Whether having experienced a lot of life is a blessing or a curse is an eternal question without definite answer, yet in this very moment, I can truthfully tell you, a first kiss is not monumental enough to change your life´s trajectory, much less my opinion of you. After all, that is what you were truly worried about, was it not?”

“I´m not sure if I like this ability of yours to read me like a book,” you huffed. ”But yeah, something like that.”

“I think it quite a useful skill,” Zhongli mused. “Rest assured, my love, I do not think any less of you whether you choose to be intimate with me in this way or not. Although I cannot deny, kissing you would give me great pleasure, I did vow to take this relationship at your pace and I have every intention of keeping my promise. Don´t rush for my sake, I treasure every moment with you regardless.”

In your mind, it should be illegal for someone to so effortlessly stirr each and every butterfly in your stomach just by being their honest self. Zhongli, on the other hand, seemed to see nothing wrong it, considering just how often he made use of it. “As I said, I want to do this and I think I´m ready, I just don´t know where to start.”

“You think or you know?”

“I know,” you said more firmly this time. “I want this, Zhongli.”

“Hmm, I quite like the sound of that.” His lips might have lifted into a barely-there smirk but his eyes held nothing but adoration as they connected with yours. “Then, as this is clearly something you and I both desire, would you want me to take the lead and guide you for now?”

“Yes, please,” you mumbled, starkly aware of the hand that moved to cup the back of your head.

“As you wish, dear.” Leaning closer, he gave you one last chance to pull away as his breath fanned over cheeks. When you didn´t and instead moved to close the gap on instinct alone, the last thing you saw before closing your eyes was molten gold, shining so warmly, it drove every doubt from even the last fibre of your being.

His lips felt so soft as they slowly pressed against yours and you automatically blanked when thinking about what to do next. Sensing how you tensed up underneath his palms, Zhongli pulled a hair's breadth away to mutter, “Don´t think too much about it, just do what feels right. Follow your heart, not your head.”

Allowing yourself the possibility of making a mistake was not something which came easily but your courage was instantly rewarded as you responded to Zhongli´s movements. Your hands developed a mind of their own as they braced themselves against his broad chest before one ventured to his nape.

As that bliss continued, there was a moment where your teeth clacked together but instead of hiding in shame, you couldn´t help but giggle as you rested your foreheads together. Your boyfriend´s chuckle filled the air as he held you close.

“So, how do you feel? Was it as petrifying as your mind made it out to be?”

“Not at all. It was wonderful,” you said, curling a strand of his hair around your finger mindlessly. “I don´t know what I was so afraid of, really. I'm with you after all.”

“Trying to fluster me, I take it? In that case, I shall gladly accept your praise,” he smiled. “But yes, there is no reason to feel threatened, yet, it seems a lot of people are. Society has engraved the idea of an ideal first kiss in the minds of young people, leaving no room for error and thereby also no room for the humanity of the moment. A first kiss is not special because it is a perfectly crafted, world-changing moment as theatres and operas make it out to be. Instead, it is special because this delicate expression of intimacy is shared between two lovers to show their affection for the other by choosing to be vulnerable in front of them. If their feelings for each other are true, this demonstration of trust will allow them to grow closer from then on out. That is the beauty of a first kiss.”

“I quite like that take on it,” you grinned. “Well, I look forward to growing alongside you then because my feelings are definitely genuine.”

“And so are mine.” Intertwining your hands, Zhongli placed a promising kiss to your knuckles. “I have known this ever since we first met but I am most fortunate to have the chance of going on this journey with you.”

One of our chief lab participants has tediously investigated this occurrence and found that it is a part of the Earth Hour movement, a global environmental campaign.

This year, the Lab is participating in the campaign as well.

So I looked through Strixhaven Commander earlier

Theres a lot of rad cards and weird things in that set. So much gets churned out, I wanted to bring up 10 cards worth pennies from C21 that are worth picking up for your binder.

These are NOT price speculations. These are cards I think play interestingly and are fun for the format.

Artifact decks LOVE cracking small artifacts open for different ones. There’s a kind of wheel and deal with them, using goblins or trading post to bust em open for something new. Audacious Reshapers is a great new card for the category, producing a new artifact with another left in the gy for recursion. Great for Ichor Wellsprings and the like to crunch em down for a random but likely more useful thing. And if it ain’t great crunch it down again!

The technique cycle is rad. I think white is the only one I hesitate on. Demonstrate is great and often well worth the extra copy. I feel using the word Interaction to describe removal is being a bit too broad. Removal does’t cover all of interaction, interaction can go beyond removal. I will creative technique a player who is behind and jumpstart their strat to keep from having to solo the stronger player. This card is a red Unexpected Results that can be discounted down to R and works well with Prosper and other cast from exile strats.

This is more interaction I think people should run. Ideally you use this if you can manipulate the top of your deck or have a high mv. You get more cards drawn in the game and you start chipping life totals faster. It comes out turn 2 and each turn after you draw 2 before you start playing things. I’m a big fan, plus you get insight on what your opponents are drawing.

This card is clunky at 5 and lots of things you’ll want to cast hurt your life total a good deal, AND its still (1)B. This card is not the most ideal. Its strong if you have life to spare like orzhov lifegain or life to waste like Greven Predator Captain. Not ideal, not perfect, but this card will enable something nutty in the future. Its gonna be bonkers when it happens.

Essentially a Epic Experiment in blue, Talrand decks get access to whats usually an izzet brand. Its easy to see only casting one card as a downside but really this card digs for a lot of spells then allows you to use one now and keep the rest for later. Great when your spells have delicate timings. Also less likely to be counterspelled than Epic Experiment is.

Paradox Zone is huge. The first turn you play it the card makes a 2/2 then next turn a 4/4. What makes this card stand out to me is its dual counter nature. The card itself doubles counters, then the tokens it produces have power represented in counters. That is NUTS with any proliferate. If you drop this and get a 2/2, then next turn Proliferate, you will double 3 counters into 6 and make a 6/6 then tick up your 2/2 into a 3/3. Proliferate makes this card pop off and it can be played the turn after you drop Atraxa. With how much counter based keyword tech there is its easy to juice these too. This card can make some wild tokens very quickly.

Reinterpret has quickly become my favorite counterspell. You can literally get a turn ahead of your opponent with it. The card you cast doesn’t need to share a typing, it just needs to be equal or less mana. This card is ideal for helping spellslinger set up key pieces before popping off, and it can be discounted to UR letting you counter with one blue mana.

We’d mentioned cracking artifacts earlier. Grinder is a 7/4 menace so you can swing big to deal damage. Its also got mountaincycling so you can discard it to pull a shockland with intent to recur this later. Most importantly you can crack it for a wheel. I find wheeling in monoR artificer to be HUGE. And as a creature you can easily slot it into reanimator builds or sacrifice builds. Its a multipurpose card that refills your hand!

Im shocked by how little I see this card. This is a card that ends games. This is a card I ended a game with tonight. Spellslinger is an archetype that’s perceived as being creature light, and I think that’s false. Talrand, Murmuring Mystic, Alandra, Unlikely Alliance, Shark Typhoon, Metallurgic Summons, Manaform Hellkite, Zaffai, there’s so many ways to spawn tokens off casts its nuts. Getting the damage buff is already good, getting to copy spells is great, getting to freecast is insane. That’s two magecraft triggers per spell. Tonight I exiled Magma Opus and Ignite the Future giving my dudes +12/+0. And the freecast triggers all your Talrand and Metallurgic Summons again! I prefer this over Mizzix Mastery. MM takes forever to resolve and doesnt move the game along unless you win with storm. Victory buffs your dudes, motivates play through combat, and can lead to a nutty level of casting. Also look at that pest. He’s goin so FAST.

Its simple. (2)U, copy a dude. Usually your opponent will stop playing dudes, but there’s a few cases where they’ll be unable to. Primal Surge, Genesis Wave, Sudden Disappearance, Living Death, Rise of the Dark Realms, and the best part is you don’t steal it, the threat level is lower and the game can continue. Theoretical Duplication is a great warding card, one that joins in on a crazy turn rather than stops it. I run it in my Riku hugs so I can copy the spell to get 2 dudes for each 1 you get. It is a potent and underrated pick at just 3 mana.

9:35 pm.

After a few days of straight planning, they finally had everything planned and ready to go. Seonghwa especially had everything sorted. Everything was placed where it needed to be. The way into the 5th floor was mapped out, and all they needed was to actually be on the road and get going.

Each one of the boys had their things ready to go; Jongho was to be stationed on top of one of the buildings, Wooyoung was to greet the man in charge, San and Mingi were there to make sure Wooyoung wouldn't get hurt, Yeosang would be in the van, making sure there were clear ways for them to get out, Yunho is driving the getaway car and Seonghwa would actually be grabbing the implant from it's stand.

Hongjoong made sure he would be nowhere near the site. He couldn't be seen out in public.

They all had their artillery set and ready to go, all suited up in their holotech undersuits (developed courtesy of Yunho - experimental, very dangerous) and whatever else they wanted to wear for this operation. The skin tight suits were perfect to keep them safe as they were near indestructible - keyword, near.

Each of them had been ready to get going and were sitting in their black van, waiting on the second-in-command to get there. It was silent besides San and Wooyoung whispering amongst themselves. Wooyoung, of course, was sitting in his lap. They must've been muttering about Wooyoung's partner, as when Seonghwa came out, Wooyoung was blushing and very audibly said an "I can't wait to see him after this."

Once everyone noticed the man standing there, looking between each of them silently, they all got into their designated spots. No words were exchanged between anyone as they mentally prepared for how intense this job would be. Seonghwa was the last one to get into the van, finally sighing before putting head against the passenger seat headrest.

"Let's get a move on." He murmured to Yunho, letting his eyes shut.

10:42 pm.

Seonghwa didn't open his eyes until the car came to a halt, and his holo acted as sunglasses, reflecting the shining ball of gas back out. The drive wasn't long, but they were getting ready. "Time to go, then." He said to himself, readying himself to go to the back of the truck and start the brief.

The brief was - well, brief.

It was enough to set everyone in motion to make it run as smoothly as possible, and each stealth member had to make sure Seonghwa could get in and out of the vents without being seen.

Everyone had made their way to their positions after the little meeting. Everything had to go perfectly to acquire this little piece of machinery.

At 11:00 pm, they'll make their moves. At this point, Seonghwa was fitted in his suit, and using the forged ID cards to get in, he nodded to that same receptionist who was macking on Wooyoung when they first planted the weapons. He made his way all the way up to the fourth floor, only to then take the stairs up to the roof, which was only three flights up. Through there, he would go through the HV/AC system and down into the ceiling. The workers usually take a break around 11:10, so getting in and out would be so simple when he can be alone; easy to grab the implant, put it in his bag, and get out of there.

He got the okay from Jongho, who was looking through his scope on a neighbouring building to start going down, so that's exactly what he did. He started lowering himself through the unit after connecting the rope to a side roof anchor.

10:59 pm.

'Now or never, Hwa.'

Recipe: Pumpkin Corn Bread

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 cup medium grind yellow cornmeal

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 tsp baking soda

2 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

1 cup canned unsweetened pumpkin puree

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled, plus 1 tablespoon butter for the skillet

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (approx. 205 C). Place a 9-inch cast-iron skillet in the oven to warm. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Add eggs, buttermilk, pumpkin puree, and 3 tablespoons melted butter. Gently combine ingredients. Carefully remove skillet from oven and add remaining butter to coat. Pour batter into skillet and return it to the oven. Bake 25-35 minutes. Let cool before serving.

fourteen: behind the scenes

this story can be said a character study of Fang Rui and his relationships (tbh when is it not lol).

in truth, in the earliest draft, there's only one relationship that's become the focus, but as it typically happens, the character and the story tend to take a life of its own. but ultimately what brings it to completion is the Secret Santa prompt. as per en's request, the two characters chosen to become the main focus in their relationship with Fang Rui are Ye Xiu and Yu Wenzhou, with two more from the Chinese Glory team. so special mention to en (empatbelas) since they’re the reason this story gets completed.

Huang Shaotian: in comparison to the other three, there's no obvious interaction in the novel that suggests that they are closer than the typical familiarity between top gods of the League. it doesn't help that Huang Shaotian (and Fang Rui himself) is friendly with everyone. Huang Shaotian among the first to comment in Fang Rui's weibo post, then Fang Rui joins Happy's bullying of Huang Shaotian during the pre-match handshakes in the playoffs. until the prequel 'Summer of Blue Rain' that is.

not only Fang Rui shows up in Blue Rain, he also calls Huang Shaotian, Shaotian. again, considering how naturally friendly they are, it might not be enough as an evidence of their closeness. however, it's important to note that both spend time together in Blue Rain, and considering how tight-knit Blue Rain is and how social the two are, it's not impossible that they are more than merely colleagues and rivals, but friends that chat and hangout together outside of games.

Zhou Zekai: in the novel, there's only one notable interaction outside of games between the two, which is when they encountered each other after Samsara-Happy first regular match of Season 10. then there's a mention of a familiarity that's typical between pro players that debut together during the finals, but it doesn't suggest Fang Rui is as close to Zhou Zekai as Wu Yuce or even Zhou Guangyi, though it's interesting to point out that he called the latter Old Zhou, likely because he called Zhou Zekai, Little Zhou. however, then there's the prequel.

there's a pattern in the prequels: For the Glory and the Expectations of the Mediocre. all the stories tends to revolve around first meetings: Ye Xiu-Su siblings. Ye Xiu-Han Wenqing. Ye Xiu-Wu Xuefeng. Sun Zheping-Zhang Jiale. Yu Wenzhou-Huang Shaotian-Wang Jiexi. Wang Jiexi-Fang Shiqian. Yu Wenzhou-Huang Shaotian-Zhang Xinjie-Xiao Shiqin. Zhou Zekai-Fang Minhua. and based on the characters that become the focus, they are all play important roles for each other: partners, rivals, tacticians. they are equals.

and in the latest prequel, in what supposed to be Zhou Zekai and Samsara focus, suddenly a wild Fang Rui appeared. and he's not a mere cameo, unlike his previous appearance. he actually has an actual interaction, genuine exchange. and for people who's quiet and introverted like Zhou Zekai, they tend to stick close to people they're familiar with when they're getting into new place aka the League. Fang Rui might be the first friend he made outside Samsara, and quite possibly, his partner and/or rival in the future (or BB just plain adore FR, which is... fair, me too).

Yu Wenzhou: before the prequel, it's less likely for Fang Rui to be close to Yu Wenzhou, in comparison to Huang Shaotian. although there's a notable interaction in the playoffs when Lu Hanwen attempted to play dirty, the keyword here is 'attempted', making Fang Rui rolled on the ground laughing as he gestured wildly towards Blue Rain team. the one being shown having a reaction towards him is Yu Wenzhou (though this also points out how good of a relationship he has with his old team that he dares to openly tease them right in the middle of the match, it's the playoffs too).

then there's the prequel, while Fang Rui appears to mainly summon Huang Shaotian for his new silver weapon, he stays behind and calls Yu Wenzhou, Wenzhou. Unlike Huang Shaotian, Yu Wenzhou is more reserved and not to mention he's Swoksaar successor and future captain, even young as they were, I don't think any ordinary newbie (as per timeline suggests that the Challengers League conclude around the same time of S3, Fang Rui should only have less than a year in the training camp) would have that kind of familiarity with Yu Wenzhou. i come to believe, as reflected in this story, that in actuality Fang Rui is closer to Yu Wenzhou than Huang Shaotian.

Ye Xiu: and lastly, putting the most important relationship and the one that started everything. as i fall in love with Fang Rui, i recall vividly all his scenes and his interactions with others. his dynamics with Ye Xiu particularly caught my eye. Wei Chen is the first who can keep up with his trash talk in Happy, but ultimately after they officially enter the Glory Pro Alliance, it's Fang Rui. Su Mucheng is undeniably his best partner, but Fang Rui is Ye Xiu's partner in trash talk and in close range offensive. there are plenty of instances of these two working together in dealing damage in close range (i can give the receipt, if anyone wants it). these are some of my favorite interactions:

"Nice snipe." Fang Rui's Boundless Sea said in the public chat. "I can't stay rusty forever :)" Ye Xiu replied with a smiley face. -Chapter 1163

"Clearly explain? You didn't explain at all!" Fang Rui said. "I saw that he was looking at them himself!" Ye Xiu said. "What use is looking at them himself! Are the rules that easy to digest? You need to properly teach him how to exploit the loopholes in the rules." "You shut your mouth, is exploiting loopholes and whatnot something that a respectable pro player should do?" "But there will always be a few sneaky players that do this. To defeat their sneaky tricks, you first have to understand how they'll be sneaky!" said Fang Rui. -Chapter 1164

"The ones who should be strictly criticized are the two players who went up next. Two players, and you couldn't take down the opponent's one player? Especially the third player, the great general anchoring the group arena, Fang Rui! The team didn't spend so much money to get you over here just so you could be a useless dim sum! You couldn't even take care of a Wang Jiexi?" Ye Xiu berated him. The tone of that "couldn't even take care of a Wang Jiexi" was deafening! Ever since Wang Jiexi had entered the Alliance, the reporters had never heard this kind of sentence before. "Yeah yeah yeah." To the side, Fang Rui confessed, ashamed, "I messed up, I couldn't focus my spirits to play well. Someone like Wang Jiexi, I should at least be able to fight ten of him." "That's a bit much!" Ye Xiu said. "Eight?" Fang Rui said. "Mm." Ye Xiu nodded. -Chapter 1195

“What do you mean? We purposefully gave you a shot at him, y’know?” In the chat, Fang Rui replied to Wei Chen. “Look at what wonderful people we are, giving you a chance to show off in front of your disciple. Where’s your gratitude?” Ye Xiu added. “Fine, thank you, you dumbasses,” Wei Chen retorted. -Chapter 1415

At such a crucial moment of time, Happy’s team members were still relentlessly trash talking Wei Chen, reminding him that it wouldn’t look good if his junior to defeated him. “You’re twice his age!” Ye Xiu reminded. “More than,” Fang Rui corrected. “If you get cut down so easily then that would be quite the embarrassment,” Ye Xiu said. “Indeed.” This time, Wei Chen didn’t reply. Naturally, this wasn’t because he was alright with being mocked like this, but it was because he couldn’t spare any effort into arguing with these two -Chapter 1416

“If you were my opponent, I definitely wouldn’t have fallen for that,” Fang Rui said honestly to Ye Xiu. “Nah, you definitely would have,” Ye Xiu replied back honestly. “Definitely wouldn’t have.” “Definitely would have.” -Chapter 1525

“How’s it going there? If you’re still holding on, type 1,” Fang Rui messaged. “11111111111,” Ye Xiu typed a line of 1s, showing that he was doing great. “Wow, amazing! What are we even here for?” Fang Rui replied. He was actually very shocked. -Chapter 1618

those interactions never fail to bring a smile to my face. their exchange is easy, comfortable. while at the same time when they do it during games, neither loses their focus. there also are times when they use it to cover their real intentions or use it as a mental attack, making their opponents second guess. then, i thought of the teams they left behind.

i cannot imagine Excellent Era with Liu Hao and Wind Howl with Tang Hao responding positively to their trash talk or their overall playful, not so serious exchange, not realizing it’s also their way to lighten the team’s mood. i imagine how lonely it has been, how difficult and uncomfortable it might be, and yet here they are in Happy. another person, their teammate who can actually give as good as they get, without getting offended or losing focus in game. it’s like finding someone who can get your jokes. if i’m that happy in that situation, i bet Ye Xiu and Fang Rui are too.

and i want to particularly highlight these two interactions:

"Good joke. On the other hand, look at how sincere I am," Fang Rui said to Ye Xiu after leaving the stage, and was met with a kick. -Chapter 1139

"You useless dim sum! Are you looking for death! Hurry up and kneel!" Ye Xiu hit Fang Rui on the head. "My mistake, my mistake!" Fang Rui was weeping and crying. The others didn't know whether to be angry or amused. This communication issue was really a big problem! -Chapter 1208

my memories might be faulty, but i really, really cannot recall Ye Xiu being as physical with others as he has been with Fang Rui (besides Su Mucheng, but like that’s only once too, i think cmiiw). that’s display of another level of comfort right there

this also brings me to the other dimension of trash talk (and dirty playstyle).

Fang Rui had completely ruined the tense atmosphere in the stadium. The peak-level match had suddenly turned into an in-game 1v1 in the Glory Arena. -Chapter 1605

Fang Rui received a warm welcome from Happy’s fans. As they cheered, he strutted around as if Happy wasn’t the team falling behind right now. He walked onto the stage, waving his hands towards the crowd as if he had won. It was only until the referee rushed over and berated him did he go into the player booth dejectedly. The crowd laughed. The tense atmosphere from Zhang Jiale’s 1v2 had lightened considerably. [...] The public chat had been very calm previously, but Fang Rui’s presence changed that. “How mighty! 1v2!” Fang Rui gave praise towards Zhang Jiale. “It’s not over yet!” Zhang Jiale replied. “It pretty much is,” Fang Rui said. [...] You could say it was dirty, but that explosive burst of qi was very heroic. You could say that it was tyrannical, but hiding behind a wall and gathering qi was very dirty… In any case, Happy had won this round. It was a clean victory, chasing back the advantage that Zhang Jiale had gained. If Fang Rui’s previous interactions with the crowd had eased the crowd’s tension, then his dominating performance this round was a tranquilizer to Happy’s fans. -Chapter 1491

these excerpts can be said to be the best examples of how much a mood maker (or destroyer) Fang Rui can be. he can only pull this off if he is perceptive, he’s sensitive towards people’s moods and knows how to influence them. so it’s not a stretch to say that Fang Rui is a master at people’s psychology. and interestingly, this exchange sounds a bit familiar…

"Our captain is mighty." "If you've got the time to spout useless words, why don't you use it on moving your character instead?" The praise that he had typed into the public chat was only met with Ye Xiu's disdain. [...] Liu Hao would never forget the icy contempt that Ye Xiu showed towards his well-meaning compliment. To Liu Hao, calling out a beautiful play by a teammate was a way of boosting the morale of the team, but Ye Xiu maintained that his praise was too excessive. -Chapter 1279-1280

why is there such a difference in response from Ye Xiu? is it because of it’s directed towards an opponent instead of teammates, as it can be disruptive? Ye Xiu’s explanation in that very same match is that Liu Hao is always unable to put one hundred percent of his attention into the match. there are far too many other things he’s concerned about. is that all, or is there something else?

my first and main guess, is that Ye Xiu has a higher and better regard for Fang Rui. this started from their first official interaction in the novel.

"In the end, it's the experienced players who are harder to deal with!" When Ye Xiu saw Fang Rui's decision, he couldn't help but sigh in his heart. [...] In the end, it's the experienced players who are harder to deal with! Fang Rui came up with the same evaluation. -Chapter 1110

what’s also interesting in this chapter is that this shows their thoughts, and their thoughts are strikingly similar. this also might be BB sowing the seeds early of how Fang Rui would have fit in Happy under Ye Xiu easily.

“He’s not wasting the foundation that Mo Fan lay down for him. What a reliable guy!” Ye Xiu sighed. -Chapter 1447

Reliable, such an assessment coming from Ye Xiu should be a huge compliment. after all, this is the man who believes that Glory isn’t a single-player game.

“You gonna be okay?” Ye Xiu grinned as he asked Fang Rui. For the other Happy players who didn’t know that Fang Rui wasn’t himself right now, it didn’t sound like anything was wrong. The team had four senior members. Apart from Su Mucheng, the other three weren’t exactly the most serious people. It was common for them to talk trash about each other. But Fang Rui knew that these seemingly normal joking words had real meaning today. “Even if I’m not, I’ve got to go. The team really can’t do without me,” Fang Rui said proudly. The others on Happy didn’t find anything wrong, but Ye Xiu could hear what Fang Rui was implying: Yes, we don’t have any other choice. No matter how things are, I have to go. Ye Xiu didn’t say anything more. He wasn’t completely clear how Fang Rui’s condition was, but he knew that Fang Rui was a responsible player. He wasn’t going to play if he didn’t think he could win. It could only mean that he could still fight. He didn’t want to go before probably because he only wanted to fight if it was necessary, and right now was the time. -Chapter 1655

Responsible.

THIS. this might be what sets Fang Rui apart from Liu Hao the most: he’s a responsible player. he always sees the big picture, he thinks of the ultimate goal: victory, and he never forgets he needs a team to achieve that. his trash talk and his playful demeanor onstage and offstage, his silence when he’s not feeling the best, his voluntary choice to step up when needed… are all in consideration of victory, and being as perceptive (and former vice captain) as he is, he knows how important morale is. Liu Hao can preach as much as he wants that he wants to boost the team’s morale, but Ye Xiu isn’t buying it, he knows Liu Hao’s doing it for himself, not for the team, not really as he’s always concerned about other things irrelevant to the game, to victory.

it’s no wonder that Ye Xiu finds it easy to trust Fang Rui despite having less time to build a rapport with, especially compared with the rest of Happy who has been building the team with him from scratch, and even when he’s not exactly close to Fang Rui. i say this with confidence because it’s noted that Ye Xiu needed to open a new chat window to pull Fang Rui to Happy, which means their only contact is limited to around official matches or All-Stars.

Ye Xiu’s trust and reliance in Fang Rui shows up many times throughout the novel, but it’s notably obvious in during the playoffs.

“I would’ve been fine even without your help,” Fang Rui suddenly said. “Huh?” Steamed Bun replied. “Not you, Steamed Bun,” Ye Xiu typed a reply as fast as he could. Though he knew that Fang Rui was talking to him, but if they let Steamed Bun misunderstand, then things would go downhill very fast. “We’re counting on you, Steamed Bun,” Fang Rui also broke out into cold sweat, hurriedly pitching in and making sure that Steamed Bun was focused and happy. [...] Ye Xiu and Fang Rui’s hearts calmed. Ye Xiu is trusting the handling of Steamed Bun, the most difficult to understand player in Happy, the greatest wildcard and variable in the game, to Fang Rui.

then there’s the playoffs against Tyranny.

Back on the battlefield, Happy had regrouped under Ye Xiu’s orders. They clearly didn’t want to continue fighting with Tyranny here. They wanted to reset the battle and fight in a different place. before finally Fang Rui is sent out of the game, until the very end Ye Xiu tried to save him, even when Fang Rui himself told the team to leave him. In that scene, Ye Xiu is even shown to be visibly distressed, which says a lot.

"Du Ming's in really good condition today. Be careful," Ye Xiu said to Fang Rui. "In better condition than me?" Fang Rui scoffed. "Haha," Ye Xiu laughed. "What's 'haha' supposed to mean!" Fang Rui could feel the disdain from Ye Xiu's laugh. "You're getting paid the most out of all of us. Please," Ye Xiu said. -Chapter 1605

the please tacked on really shakes me to the core, i can imagine it's more so for Fang Rui. that proud and stubborn Ye Xiu, needs to resort to something close to begging in desperation. i may be reading into things, but another interesting point in this scene is how Ye Xiu is not hiding his disdain. Ye Xiu is really careful in revealing his emotions, particularly negative ones. and yet here he is, doing so. for me, it’s like the mask is off, the guard is lowered, in that single moment.

“But… No matter what the map is, have you thought about not letting Fang Rui go onstage?” Chen Guo said. Ye Xiu fell silent. -Chapter 1635

Just two of them were left. Su Mucheng stood behind Ye Xiu, watching him reclassify the recordings, articles, images, etc. from before and save them. “How do you feel?” Su Mucheng suddenly asked. “How do I feel? You mean about Fang Rui?” Ye Xiu said, without turning his head. -Chapter 1636

By then, Ye Xiu had returned to Happy’s area. He also had to decide on the next person Happy was to send up. But this was not an easy decision. the first to the last scenes are Ye Xiu not denying Fang Rui’s strength and importance to the team. it also shows Ye Xiu’s tendency to look to and for Fang Rui. i want to remind you of the scene when Ye Xiu was checking on everyone’s state before the playoffs, and kept wondering of Fang Rui’s whereabouts until Su Mucheng told him that he went to bed early. Don’t also forget this infamous scene:

Ye Xiu is the first to notice the abnormality of Fang Rui and the first to make a move to check on Fang Rui. he's also the one who doesn't buy Fang Rui's act.

this trust and understanding go both ways.

It’s Su Mucheng and Fang Rui who are the first to react and help Ye Xiu to support his tired fingers to lift up the trophy, and Fang Rui himself is unlikely to have fully recovered by then too.

whoops it grows into such a long analysis into Fang Rui and Ye Xiu’s relationship. i’d also point out that Ye Xiu’s trust and reliance on Fang Rui is not baseless, besides the legendary play that heralds Fang Rui’s return to godhood. it’s been pointed out that Happy’s excellent record is due to Fang Rui as much as Ye Xiu’s. (not core player my ass. sorry my beloved dimsum, but we’re gonna agree to disagree)

Fang Rui growing accustomed to his new playstyle was an indispensable contribution to Happy's recent strong performance. After being thrown off by Ye Xiu's unspecialized Lord Grim, the various members of the Alliance now faced another playstyle that they couldn't immediately understand, that caused them just as much difficulty as Lord Grim. -Chapter 1225

this, alongside the brief mention that player(s) from abroad seems to disdain these kinds of dirty tricks from Wei Chen, makes a strong argument that if Ye Xiu has his pick in the national team roster, he will certainly have Fang Rui.

meanwhile, it is merely my speculation that Fang Rui is the one replacing Han Wenqing. however, i feel it’s not without basis. the numbering on the national team, for one. then there’s the distribution of class and ability. I’ve read some analysis, and many are leaning towards Fang Rui as one of the candidates. more so if Wei Chen’s comment of dirty playing is being disdained is true and not mere exaggeration, Fang Rui’s not being the first choice is much higher and for Ye Xiu, who needs to work miracles as the Team Leader in the short time, for him choosing Fang Rui is a no brainer: a player that is unpredictable and unfamiliar to opponents, and a teammate whom he trusts and relies on, with whom he can pick for both individual and team competition.

i kinda have to add the last one because the younger members of the national team are not very known for their teamwork. and Fang Rui, both as a player and as Qi Master, is incredibly versatile. he has high adaptability. case in point: him fitting in the grassroots, online game background Happy with surprising ease. for this reason Happy is nigh invincible in online games and robbing BOSSes compared to other pro players. this shows that that online game style is not easy for pro players with a formal training background, and yet here Fang Rui who debuted in the Fifth Year easily fitting in like he’s been with Happy from day one.

that’s why i headcanon Fang Rui as a diplomat’s son, who is used to moving to different countries, learning different languages and cultures. it’s also why he’s so perceptive when it comes to people and language (read: loopholes). in the national team, he will be the unofficial vice captain to Yu Wenzhou and right hand to Ye Xiu. while they have single rooms during training, they will have roommates during the actual competition abroad, which i think will make more sense, in the case of anything going wrong (lateness, forgetfulness, you name it). so it’s likely for Ye Xiu and Fang Rui to room together. yeah, i definitely have some ideas for the World Invitationals, writing them is another matter.
