One thing I like about following contemporary soundtrack music is that sometimes you start a new movie/game, and you like the soundtrack, and even the parts of it that you don't like somehow sound very familiar... And then you realize you've been vibing to this person's music since you were like 12? This specific shoutout is for Kevin Manthei

Learned Mortality Episode 1-3 Music Post
Hey everyone! Just wanted to make a post sharing some of my insight into the songs used in Learned Mortality, episode 1-3.
I want to also talk abt the references to lyrics that I used, but in order to preserve theories, I'd rather do that later when the series has ended. Believe me, there's references to pretty much every song in the plot of the game in the actual way the game works- I've been planning this like a crazy ass spiders web.
Anyways, let's start with my most anticipated song- the TBC song, aka world.execute(me) aka I can see this with an animated anime ending playing in my head rent-free!!!
youtube
Where the Wild Things Are, perfect for a car chase.
youtube
House of Dreams, still proud of getting this stuck in Jared's head lmao.

Murphy has become my new best friend. The Lucky One is a banger!!
youtube
Shinzo sure came outta nowhere for me, but i love it as a song.
Also a big thing I wanna just plug Bliss n Eso, Milli & Celldweller for carrying this game imo.
Also a lot of ambient tracks come from the Darktide OST, Ghost Piano by Kevin Manthei, and ofc the Other Bound OST for providing a lot of wonderful backing tracks that I've made sure fit the theme of each area to a T. Excited to share more music from this campaign with you all, sharing music is my joy and running a TTRPG is the best way to do so imo.

Enjoy these songs, lemme know if there's anything you specifically want me to post that has showed up which I didn't post here~

Audio
I overlaid Somber and Hallway (this AFAIK unused alternate version) to see what it sounded like. (The volume for Somber is slightly lower so the deeper bass notes don't overpower Hallway.)

It still feels. Strange? that it took a literal 6 years for Villainous to be in the US, not including the (albeit appreciated) appearance during CN's literal anniversary, but honestly, I'm just glad that 2017 fans are just so relieved and happy that we finally got this.
It's taken cons, comics, interactive books, youtube extras of other cartoon villains, a cameo in a cn online video game, an actual mobile video game solely for the show, fans all across internationally, literal support from a few other countries before usa, the show hitting No1 in hbo max latam, a full blown crossover episode as well as being cameod in crossover nexus, a promotion with a candy manufacturer with official goodies, livestreams, halloween hbo max takeovers, official mascot costumes, and a HUGE internet background puzzle solving mystery that's still ongoing.
All for after 6 years, it finally comes to the usa officially on its own.
I really do fondly remember when these,
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the shorts themselves were all we had. It had even been a bit before alan ituriel had gone to cons and whatnot to publicly talk about the show and all that, I even remember the storyboarded live readings he did with fans.
All we had were these and fans' wild imaginations. Whether it was the Heroic au, or a western au, or a Neutral au, or a Jekyll & Hyde au, or a Swap!au, it all helped shaping the fanbase into what it is now.
Quite literally, none of this would have happened if not for the fans. All of what happened after the shorts, but especially It coming to the usa now, especially that.
It just feels serendipitous to see it finally happen, I cannot stress enough how satisfying it is. Congratulations again to Villainous, for surpassing the odds put against it! Mi lealtad se queda contigo!!!

I feel the need to inform everyone that in the official Invader Zim soundtrack, the music playing during Zim’s ruining of Operation Impending Doom is called “Zim’s Little Mistake”

MERRY PLATYPUS, EVERYONE! Here's more cool old Zim stuff I got to add to my dragon stash this year
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A picture disc from 2004; side A is the Invader Zim theme by Mark Tortorici and side B is the Planets Battle theme by our beloved Kevin Manthei
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A (scratched but still good) GIR "Okay, no more doggie today" notebook from 2005 with very pink paper
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Filler" notebook paper from 2004 with cracks/veins and Zim and GIR in the bottom corners. I slapped the label sticker from the packaging onto the front page for good old archiving
I'll be scanning both varieties of notebook paper in for y'all to use if you want! MERRY JINGLIE!!

Hi! Just wanted to add a little something to your "MH will die" theory 😏 If you go to Kevin Manthei (official Villainous soundtrack creator) ig account, he has there a track titled "Miss Heed Lament" that he states is going to be used in future episodes. I'm not saing much, but it sounds like her soul is being DRAGGED to hell ;-; So yea, would say your theory might be more or less accurate 😅
(Miss Heed will Die Theory)
Do you mean this song? I love this it sounds super scary. 😂

“HERE! We build HERE!”
“Entering Earth’s Atmosphere” - Kevin Mannhei
Note that the aired version of this song was actually slightly faster. This would have been the track played at normal speed, to keep in mind for way this edit lines up instead.

In case you missed it I POSTED A FULL GROUND KEITH AND MISS CITRUS VIDEO A WEEK AGO! You should watch it! There's cool people in it like Arin Hanson and Bonnie Gordon and it's got music from Invader Zim's Kevin Manthei! I worked really hard on it and it'd be great if a lot of people saw it (wink wink)! https://youtu.be/oYw_1ibADf8

Hot Take: Giving Spider-Man a purely orchestral score is antithetical to his character.
Be honest, would Peter Parker or Miles Morales listen to Tchaikovsky or Prokofiev? If they made music, would it sound like a professional hollywood score? Probably not. Peter also couldn't possibly make his Raimi Spider-Man costume on his salary, but that's a whole other discussion.
I'm not saying that Danny Elfman's or Michael Giacchino's music for the Spider-Man movies are bad. They're incredibly talented composers whose work on the Spider-Man movies are iconic and memorable. I'm merely pointing out that orchestra doesn't fit Spider-Man's palette the same way it would fit the Avengers or Batman. Classical music as we know it is regarded as upper-class and high culture, and Spider-Man is neither. Spider-Man WANTS to be those things, but he's constantly working with what he has in spite of money and jobs and a social life.
I think the musical character of Spider-Man lends itself much better to indie or underground music. You can see what I mean if you listen to Kevin Manthei's score for the Ultimate Spider-Man game. Especially the open world themes for the game have a wicked cool garage band vibe to it. It fits with the younger version of Peter by making him stand out from other heroes as fresh and independent. If Peter were in a band, I could absolutely see him playing the synths on these pieces.
(I'm also willing to hear arguments for Peter getting into Math Rock)
Years later, Daniel Pemberton would employ hip hop techniques, most notably sampling, to inform Mile's character. This works even better than the previous example considering how the theme of "remixing" is integral to both Miles and the Spider-Verse movies.
Orchestra is still employed throughout Spider-Verse, but notice how Peter Parker's Spider-Man theme is ALL orchestra (The Amazing Spider-Man) just like in previous Spider-Man movies. As an audience, this is what we've come to expect from Spidey. That same orchestral score is used at the end of the film as a sample in Miles's theme (Spider-Man Loves You). Miles is literally remixing Spider-Man to fit how he operates! Now we understand that Spider-Man isn't one thing but is capable of being several. Spider-Man is punk rock, Spider-Man is Jazz, Spider-Man is hip-hop, and much more!
I hope Spider-Verse gets people to rethink superhero themes in general. There will always be a place for orchestra, but sometimes all you need is a jazz group or very out-there sets of instruments. Whatever fits the character will do just great!

The song “Pia Mikinolia” by Keali’i Reichel reminds me a LOT of “Aloha” from Creature of Kapu Cave.
At first, I didn't hear it due to the vocals, but after listening longer I think the melody is somewhat similar. It's definitely something I'm adding to my Nancy Drew-esque playlist – Admin I
I'd take a hefty guess that Kevin Manthei would have dug around the Hawaiian music catalogue for inspiration. And whether the similarities are intentional or not, both songs slap in a relaxed steel-guitar kind of way. Plus I think the song having "Pua" in the title is a nice accidental nod to the game 😜 – Admin C
Please let us know if there are other pieces of music that remind you of music from the games! This was previously seen with a piece from DDI.
YouTube links for the two pieces are below:
