EP Review: Silkroad Ensemble - Phoenix Rising

Recorded live but with crowd noise stripped away to create the aural illusion of a studio EP, Phoenix Rising marks the Silkroad Ensemble’s first release since Rhiannon Giddens took over artistic directorship from Yo-Yo Ma.

Ma, however, was on stage with his cello at Tanglewood July 28, 2022, when Silkroad played Colin Jacobsen’s stellar arrangement of Peter Gabriel’s “Biko,” with Giddens and Mazz Swift on vocals. This track - which both stays true to and expands Gabriel’s song - closes the EP.

Giddens opens Phoenix Rising with an angst-ridden reading of “O Death,” one that finds her giving her singular voice a real workout - she hits a note that quite literally turned Sound Bites’ head - over a backdrop of percussion and strings. This is EP’s highlight and also one of Giddens’ most intense performances in any setting.

Esoterica reigns in the middle, first on Rabindranath Tagore's “Ekla Cholo Re,” which translates from Bengali to walk alone and then with the loose-of-form classical instrumental “Ho-Oh,” composed by Kaoru Watanab. These are pieces that need to be experienced in person - or at least on video - for full impact of the performance. But Silkroad is supposed to challenge and open minds and Phoenix Rising certainly does that.

Netflix Announces New Pokémon Concierge Episodes 'Are Now in Production'

Netflix announced on its official Twitter account on Tuesday that new episodes of Pokémon Concierge, the latest stop-motion animated series for the Pokémon franchise, are "now in production."

The series debuted with four episodes on Netflix on December 28. Netflix describes the series:

This delightful stop-motion animation tells the story of a concierge named Haru, who works at a resort just for Pokémon, and the guests who come to visit.

The series' Japanese cast includes:

Non as Haru

Ai Fairouz as Arisa

Eita Okuno as Taira

Yoshiko Takemura as Watanabe

Karen Fukuhara voices the protagonist Haru in the series' English dub. Mariya Takeuchi performs the series' theme song "Have a Good Time Here."

The stop-motion production company dwarf studios (Rilakkuma and Kaoru) animated the episodes thus far. Iku Ogawa directed the show, and Harumi Doki wrote the scripts. Tadahiro Uesugi is credited for concept art and character designs.
