It is kinda wild how many Doctor Who spin-offs have an episode with an evil clown.

The Sarah Jane Adventures have an evil clown 2-parter which references Steven King's IT; Sarah Jane canonically has coulrophobia, the K9 series has an episode where the villains are dressed as clowns (which also features? Wrestling, I think?, and Torchwood has an episode where they battle a carnival troupe who steal people's breath (feat. clown acrobats), which is probably the only time a clown performance has ever been referred to as breath-taking.

I'm beginning to suspect that the only reason Class wasn't renewed was because they spent their makeup budget on alien effects rather than creepy clown effects, like God intended.

i have deduced that k9 and nardole are the two main tv examples of a very specific archetype of dr who companion which i love:

on approximate equal footing with the doctor in terms of also being From Space, especially relative to the other companion

explicitly subordinate to the doctor in some way (dog or whatever nardole's job is) and always getting bossed around

under no impression that the doctor is any sort of uniquely special magic space guy, and therefore:

at any point 100% willing to call the doctor out on their bullshit

S2E3 - School Reunion

★★★☆☆

What in the CBeebies hell was this episode? I felt like I was watching an episode of M.I. High or something. It had it all - generic comprehensive school, radioactive cooking oil, super smart students working on coding and super secret stuff...Mind you, Anthony Head’s leery head teacher was a real strength of this otherwise childish plot.

That’s not to say it was a bad premise...but it really looked like it would’ve belonged in The Sarah Jane Adventures rather than the flagship Doctor Who series. Speaking of...Sarah Jane!!!!! Full disclosure, I have not watched many Classic Who episodes but I have read enough to know how important of a companion she was and the Doctor’s genuine happiness and being reunited is palpable.

There were otherwise some genuinely good moments in the show - Sarah Jane and Rose trying to one-up each other while the Doctor cluelessly tried to navigate dealing with the “missus and the ex”, Sarah Jane seeing the TARDIS for the first time, and Mickey realising he was the tin dog of the group.

And it explored, really an unspoken part of a companion’s journey with the Doctor - the end. How does one go on after you’ve seen the stars, witnessed indescribable sights and you’re left on Earth? For Sarah Jane, she had to deal with the monotony of human life, constantly waiting for the Doctor to come back for her, waiting for closure. And he didn’t. Instead, he regenerated over half a dozen times, she was relegated as a memory to the back of his mind and he never really talked about her again. It’s almost like pets - they’re a part of your life but for them you are their whole life.

Rose gets a reality check here - she’s not the only one...and she’s not that special. That has to be crushing.

i used to have this dark little au i’d toy around with sometimes. the basic setup went that near the end of the last great time war, the doctor stuffed all their companions in a pocket dimension, timelines and all. they all lived - they had all always lived in this happy little village where nothing ever went wrong, where they could be the people the doctor remembered outside the nightmare the time war turned reality into -

1. Austin experimented with giving people $1,000 a month.

People who received guaranteed basic income in one of Texas' largest cities reported reduced rates of housing insecurity. Austin was the first city in Texas to launch a taxpayer-funded guaranteed-income program when the Austin Guaranteed Income Pilot kicked off in May 2022. The program served 135 low-income families, each receiving $1,000 monthly.

2. Germany: Tens of thousands in Berlin protest far right

Around 150,000 people have attended a protest rally in the German capital, Berlin, against the far right and its ideology, the latest in a series of such demonstrations across Germany in recent weeks.

3. Sweden: Where it's taboo for dads to skip parental leave

It's been 50 years since Sweden introduced state-funded parental leave, designed for couples to share. The pioneering policy offers some surprising lessons for other countries.

4. Germany tests 4-day workweek amid labor shortage

While Germany, struggles to find enough workers, dozens of companies are starting an experiment that will see employees work a day less. In February, 45 companies and organizations in Germany will introduce a 4-day workweek for half a year.

5. K9 finds missing endangered 11-yr-old, gives her kisses

An 11-year-old girl, reported to be missing and endangered, is now safe after she was found by a sheriff’s K9 deputy in Wimauma, Florida. Her handler asked if the K9 could give the girl kisses as a reward to the K9 for locating the girl, and the heartwarming moment was captured on the deputy’s body camera.

6. Oregon Zoo releases seven critically endangered condors back to nature in California

Seven California condors were released into the wild in the U.S. state after the endangered animals were hatched and raised at Oregon Zoo.

7. EU will force cosmetic companies to pay to reduce microplastic pollution

Beauty companies will have to pay more to clean up micropollutants after EU negotiators struck a new deal to treat sewage.

Under draft rules that follow the “polluter pays principle”, companies that sell medicines and cosmetics will have to cover at least 80% of the extra costs needed to get rid of tiny pollutants that are dirtying urban wastewater.

i love cherry-picking only the parts i like from the sarah jane adventures post-canon content, to create the ending in my head that i think is best for the characters (gay luke, clyde & rani getting together BUT sky having a proper childhood & still living with sarah jane!)

#i just don't like sky's original planned ending! and maybe it would have just been the end of series cliffhanger #and she'd have been brought back next series #but she was a 12 year old girl who was just learning to enjoy life on earth and a family!#and i just love the found family that is sarah jane and sky & luke. like - sarah jane already lost k9 she doesn't need to lose anyone else!#also i DO like to indulge in the headcanon that in-universe sarah jane is still alive and well and enjoying life
