La Malédiction des Roses de K.F. Breene

Magical Midlife Madness by K.F. Breene
Tumblr media
"A woman starting over. A new house with an unexpected twist. A cape wearing butler acting as the world's worst life coach."
What a fun and refreshing read this was! The first page had me hooked instantly, and I loved the main character. It was nice to follow a story where the characters aren't so young and naive, although I still love those too. But I'm 36 and feel like I'm steaming towards 40 at break-neck speeds, so Jessie was a little more relatable for me.
I did find the instances where we were swapped from Jessie's first-person POV to the other characters third-person POV a little jarring. It took me out of the story a bit in those moments where I had to adjust to it. And I sometimes had to re-read a few paragraphs. Perhaps I was just tired at times, but occasionally the topic seemed to change suddenly. If there was dialogue, I felt like I'd missed half of the conversation.
Overall though, this was a fun and ridiculous (in a good way!) book that was otherwise a very easy read. I completely recommend it!

Here is a full list of all the books I read in 2023 and links to the art I’ve made for them.
Just a few quick notes. I didn’t make art for everything I read. I also fell off the wagon a bit toward the end and went through an art block. Not sure if I’ll continue this project into 2024 but I might do some variation. We’ll see.

My goal was to read 90 books and I beat that by 5. I think I’m going to set my reading goal to just 80 this year. Just to give myself a little more freedom. I did read a lot of really short books just to get my number up and I’d rather just focus on reading whatever I want.
Shortest book read: Ice Planet Honeymoon: Raahosh and Liz by Ruby Dixon
Longest book read: Winter by Marissa Meyer
Current read started in 2023 but will finish in 2024: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

Let Me Be Your Hype Girl: Deliciously Dark Fairytales Series
Let me be perfectly clear, I would follow author K.F. Breene to the ends of every world that she creates in that beautiful, talented brain of hers. That being said, it’s an absolute crime that this series isn’t splashed on every social media site available. Well, Ms. Breene, allow me to be your hype girl. Raise your hand if, when you watched Beauty and the Beast, you were disappointed when the…

“The bloodsuckers got him first.” I rolled my eyes. “Bloodsuckers? Really? Every vampire TV show ever called—they want their catchphrases back.” “Vampires suck blood. Hence the term.” “Use a little originality. They screw like rock stars, too. So why don’t you call them rock-star screwers?” “Besides the clumsiness of that phrase, rock stars are mortal. They couldn’t possibly screw as well as vampires.”

Do you also read romance novels? If so, any recommendations? I'm reading K.F. Breene's A Kingdom of Ruin currently
oooh I'll have to take a look at that. Romance recently? Not truly, a lot of smut really. I just finished The Beast by Katee Robert. Before that my last good romance book I read was Love Hypothesis. That shit was so cute, I want more soft stuff rn 🤍

Books I Read in 2023
#80 - Sin & Chocolate, by K.F. Breene
DNF Review
DNF @ 54%.
I picked this up as a freebie romance by a new-to-me author, and this is a case of "you get what you pay for." I made it halfway through the book and the romance is nonexistent, the two leads have barely interacted and their relationship is currently stalker/creeped-out and angry woman, which I do not support as a valid basis for a romantic relationship in the future.
On top of that, the dialogue is constant and awful, and the staging of each scene isn't always clear. Nobody can get anything done in this story without arguing about it for pages first, and conversations that seem like they should probably be private are held in front of the person the conversation is about, with little to no indication they're trying to speak quietly. At multiple points, I said to myself, "Can the creepy stalker man hear you right now? I feel like he should be able to hear you in this scene, but you're talking about him like he isn't there, I guess you think he can't hear you."
Since this sort of thing happened frequently (though not always with conversations or arguments specifically about the male lead) it gave me the impression that all the characters are speaking at the top of their voice all the time, no matter where they are, like those rude people who talk on the phone on public transit loud enough that everyone can hear them and don't care that they might be disturbing anyone.
I don't want to read about these characters anymore, or slog through this slow story that doesn't look like it's actually going anywhere.
