Once Upon a Workday: Encouraging Tales of Resilience by Elizabeth Pich and Jonathan Kunz
Thank you to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Humorous and heartwarming tales of resilience, self-care, and mental health from the popular webcomic @warandpeas.
Imagine a mix of Shel Silverstein and Dr. Seuss but writing about the everyday stresses of working adults. That gives you a pretty good idea of this book.
I love War and Peas, so I was excited to see this book. Each poem/story tells a humorous tale of a likely burnt out adult just trying to survive another day. For example, the first one entitled "A Job is a Job" begins: "Another day breaks, you pour out of bed. Not a minute awake and in creeps the dread." I can't think of anyone I know who hasn't experienced.
This books tells stories of the mundane and at times exhausting parts of life in a fun way, with whimsical illustrations attached.
My favorite poem was "Sincerely Yours" which was almost too relatable. It tells the story of someone trying to figure out how to sign a work email. It contains evocative lines such as: "There must be a line that perfectly sums it up. One that shows how I feel but not too much."
I think this is a perfect book to keep in a home office to remind yourself to keep strong while not forgetting to be a little silly.
5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

War and Peas has a bunch of comics around the Reaper character: https://warandpeas.com/tag/grim-reaper/
They’re well worth the read, as the Reaper does try to be serious about things, but of course, is detoured from it. It’s a nice way of getting comfortable with death, through the imagery of the comics and the stories they tell.
More often than not, you see the Grim Reaper sparing people, but he also indicates that exceptions can’t be made for friends.
It’s nice.
It’s usually wholesome.

War and Peas: Funny Comics for Dirty Lovers by Jonathan Kunz and Elizabeth Pich. Andrews McMeel, 2020. 9781524854072. 160pp. http://www.powells.com/book/-9781524854072?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Frequent characters in this collection include Death, Dog, two couples, a ghost, a robot, and a witch who likes to party. There are some swear words and adult content. One comic features a creepy clown and another, about a dog, has a photograph, which was a nice tribute.
My favorites are, of course, the few comic strips about books and reading. These are four panel comics at their best, which to me is just a little bit adult and nasty. But leave leave this collection where your teenagers can find it -- they'll think it's hilarious.

Our 30 Dark Comics With Twisted Endings You Probably Didn‘t See Coming (New Pics)
'War and Peas' is created by the artist duo Elizabeth Pich & Jonathan Kunz.
We started this webcomic in 2011 and are very happy that we could build a loyal and loving followership. Last year we managed to sign an international book deal with the publisher Andrews McMeel. That means that we found the same home as the Peanuts, Calvin & Hobbes and many of our fellow webcomic colleagues.
You can now preorder the book called “Funny Comics for Dirty Lovers.” And if you missed some of our older material, you can check out these 4 posts on Bored Panda here, here, here and here.
